Speaker 1 (00:00):
Is your strike team assembled?
Speaker 2 (00:03):
My team's ready.
Speaker 3 (00:04):
I don't have a command crew for the shuttle.
Speaker 4 (00:06):
Count in from News Talk eleven ten and ninety nine
three w BT.
Speaker 5 (00:11):
I understand how you feel this time.
Speaker 6 (00:14):
It's personal.
Speaker 4 (00:15):
This is Good Morning Beatty with Bo Thompson and Beth Troutby.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Why I Love but Frauden our mine?
Speaker 7 (00:23):
All right, this city, this city morning, Wait on moestay.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Now, see we're filtrating your brain in various ways because
this is an interesting song. Like I started playing this
song recently because we were talking about the Hornets one
day and Hornet's history. Like I think it's when they
came out those new uniforms that were Bobcats throwbacks, you mean, the.
Speaker 5 (01:16):
Ones that are modeled after the Bird of Paradise flower,
which was apparently named by Queen Charlotte.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
But I was looking for this song they used to
play at the at the Arena, and I was asking
Bernie what it was, and we finally tracked it down
and it took a while, and so here it is.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
So this is not one.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
That I could just go if you if this had
happened a year ago, it would have I would have
had to go down a rabbit hole to find this
for you, I.
Speaker 5 (01:40):
Wouldn't have known this. I only know this song because
of you. Like Bernie has probably infiltrated my brain more
than any of.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yousic Bernie's leaving right for you in Beth's head.
Speaker 5 (01:53):
And when I told the guys this wording that this
was my song, Bernie did a little happy dade.
Speaker 6 (01:57):
Oh my gosh, that's just incredible.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Please read it act for us, Bernie.
Speaker 6 (02:00):
Why don't like I didn't like dance?
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Oh yeah, I heard there was a happy day.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
But am I right? They don't play this anymore?
Speaker 6 (02:07):
No, no, they have since they've made it more for
the for the young'ins. Now, yes, this is more like
when Wimbows. This is the lead singer Falloup Boy. It's
Patrick style.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
But it's great, y'all. We've got so much to celebrate
this city. Their city is the killer life and raised here.
Speaker 6 (02:24):
I love it. When LaMelo came in, it changed changed
it up with bit.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
You're going to play a song anyway, so might as
well just like double down and get it out of
the way with the song that.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
You knew it would find its way into the show.
Big day around the radio station. Here tonight is the
thirty second annual Hancock's Bikes for Kids, and so it's
a day of extra hours for us, but in the
best possible way. We have a great time. We love
to see all of you. It's a great calls and
we get John Hancock tonight, we get Boomer tonight, we
get two people are going to talk to coming up
(02:53):
in our segment at six twenty, because they are the
driving forces today behind Kids First. That's Brent and Ailey
Sanders and of course husband and daughter of Sharon Standers
who founded Kids First all those years ago. So we'll
check in with them make sure everything's ready to go tonight.
The weather has cooperated like it's not so great out
(03:13):
there right now, but all told, based on what we were
talking about two or three days ago with Ray Stagic,
the weather's not as bad as we thought it would
be this morning, and the worst of it is going
to be earlier in the day versus tonight while we're
here collecting bike, so it's all sort of lining up.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
It's going to be cold, but we've done that before.
Speaker 8 (03:31):
Oh yeah, it's supposed to be cold because it feels
like Christmas that way, Yes, in our city that we
love and can we pause and celebrate for a moment
Bill Napier's success.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
We all just stopped in our tracks when we heard
you say that, whose name, by the way, is Billy Napier.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, but it's a Bill Napier on this show. Very excited.
Are you now going to be a James Madison football fan?
Speaker 5 (03:52):
Well, I didn't know that I needed to be a
James Madison but football fan, but yes, because you know,
Bill is the coach that I know solid.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
You had him going to Alabama at one point, I.
Speaker 5 (04:03):
Did think that he was going to be the replacement
for Nick Saban.
Speaker 6 (04:06):
You're close. He's in Virginia.
Speaker 9 (04:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
If you're new to the show, I'll find time at
some point today to give you some context on this
because it's one of the great moments of the show.
Speaker 5 (04:14):
It might be one of my favorite moments. Because I
thought I was really going to be like, yeah, I
think that he's a solid shoe in for replacing Nick Saban,
And you guys looked at me like who what?
Speaker 3 (04:24):
I think you had combined every sports documentary you have
watched at that point and somehow came up with Bill
Napier as being the replacement.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
You said it so matter of factuvely like like like
as if you were on like a sports pundit show
and we all.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Big names were talking about what about Bill Napier?
Speaker 6 (04:38):
You were very confident, you know what about Bill nape.
Speaker 5 (04:42):
You guys had one of your classic just stare at
me and not say a thing moments.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Let me rephrase that. It was one of the greatest
Beth moments in the history of the.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
Show and no moments in Beth.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Sports gonna double down on Beth. That's it, right, But
how fun.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
It's like be doing politics if I just came in. Guys,
what about Bill Napier being a congressman from districts?
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Okay, okay, speaking of that, speaking of that, like Bill
Napier running for Congress, y'all, the sham Wow guy is
running for Congress and my pillow guy is running for governor.
So we have like some infomercial stars, you know, running
for public office.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
The sham Wow guys, the ShamWow is a checkered past.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
He does, say the least but a few things. But guys,
with the with the Epstein files still being in the
news headlines, I think we're finding out that a lot
of people are a checkered past.
Speaker 10 (05:30):
Right.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
Oh, I don't know if y'all know this.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Find out.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
I don't know if y'all know this, but the guy
who used to host The Celebrity Apprentice is the president.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Six thirteen on WBT.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Like I mentioned, we'll check in with Brent and Haley
from Kids First, who are going to be there with
us tonight. That's coming up in just a few minutes.
Much more to get to Congress and Mark Harris with
us on the show today. Tell us something good on
the show today. John Hancock News Quiz. It's a Friday
morning here in the Tyboid Studio and in the traffic
studio is the one and only Boomer Van Canna, the greatest,
(06:05):
the legendary.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
We're all doing it now, but we're gonna start doing
it for himself. Where's my intro?
Speaker 11 (06:14):
Oh my gosh, Hey, Beth, your boy going to James Madison.
Speaker 6 (06:19):
They're known as the Dukes.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Oh out of Harrisburg, Virginia.
Speaker 11 (06:23):
That's beautiful countries, have beautiful campus, great place.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
I've driven past that campus several times. It's really kind
of a.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Have you ever Have you ever worked in television? No,
but I watch a lot of them.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Have you been doing a sid game not I drove
by with.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
I hear James Madison was the fourth president of the
United States.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
I don't know about that, but.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
This is good.
Speaker 12 (06:59):
Bring beat Alabama is one of those programs that immediately,
I don't care how good you have it, what what
team you're coaching, whether they won a national championship, the
Alabama coaching job makes every single coach in the country say, hmm,
I wonder what's happening there?
Speaker 5 (07:18):
Yeah, what about Bill Napier? Could he be could he
come isner? Wasn't he the Florida guy that had the
T bow and that whole that whole really cool run.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yeah, but it was Urban Meyer. Urban kind of imploded.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Who was he coach?
Speaker 2 (07:51):
Coach?
Speaker 1 (07:53):
How about Boomer Vancanon? Where's Dick Crumb when you need them?
Speaker 5 (08:00):
Y'all so much.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
So today it is my great pleasure to formally introduce
the new head coach of the Florida Gators, Billy Napier.
Billy Napier, I supposed about Trotwin's Bill Napier.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
We're pals. I just I just call him Bill.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
You brought him up and I knew he was a
Florida coach, but he's so non a script. I wasn't
sure that he still was, so I looked up his record.
He's eleven and fourteen and two years so obviously top
candidate for the Alabama job.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
He would assume, not the script.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
I wasn't answering because I think I.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Think he's still there.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
Here's my favorite message James sent us. Send us an
email at GMVT show at WBT dot com. He said,
y'all are messing with her. Perhaps not a candidate for
the head coach job, but kind of impressed that she
knew the name and got the school right.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Because you watched the documentary or so for there, probably
because she's from googled. Urbin Meyer was a little more
central in that the under the radar career of Billy.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
Maybe that's how I know his name, But they kind
of look alike Bill Napier. We're pals. I just call
him Bill.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
You know burn bowls. Oh my goodness.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
That was in year two of our show, the famous
Bill Napier incidents.
Speaker 5 (09:23):
I think that's when we all just bonded and became
best friends.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
But you know, occasionally a reference gets dropped and people
who are new to the show may not know what
it is. So I like to let you all know
where this stuff comes from, because it's not just out
of thin air.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Well, whenever I heard his name, if you were listening
at the very first sports cast of the show today,
he said Bill Napier's name, and I think I might
have exploded.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
The whole room stopped.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
It was the equivalent of whenever any of us hear
dead air, Yeah, wait, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Bill Napier?
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Like the Bill Napier he got a new coaching job.
Speaker 5 (09:55):
I'm so proud.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
So if you don't remember that from your number two,
welcome to the show. He welcome, and welcome to Friday,
December fifth, big day around here. It is Hancock's Bikes
for Kids Night. That means five o'clock this afternoon. We
will be joined by so many of you that hopefully
we'll be bringing a new bike that we will donate
to kids First of the Carolinas, and hopefully it'll be
(10:17):
many kids in the Charlotte area getting a new bike
for Christmas. I want to welcome to the WBT hotline
two of the people that are the driving forces behind
Kids First of the Carolinas, Brent and Hailey Sanders back
with us. Brent, of course, a husband of Sharon Sanders,
and Haley, daughter of Sharon, who founded this passed away
a few years ago, but her legacy lives on and
(10:39):
we are ready for tonight.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Hey Bo and Beth, how are you hi?
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Good morning? We're doing great. How are you doing? I
know that you must be so excited about another spectacular night.
Speaker 13 (10:49):
Well I'll tell you and both Thanks for all the
great comments and kind words. But this is the whole community,
you guys, the station, all of your listeners, Hancock and
Bill at Frido, lay on and on, and it's just
amazing that we've been doing this thirty two years together.
I feel like that the bike drive has kind of
(11:10):
become symbolic and it it really gets the holiday season
rolling into high gear. See what I did there, We're
rolling into high gear but with bikes. But it's just
an amazing kind of catalyst to this great holiday season
in December, and then it really kicks off our kids
(11:30):
first giving season and activities. Our store is open as
of a couple of weeks ago, again same place. It's
eighty three twenty eight Paila Matthews Road and Mullen Creek Parkway.
We actually have two stores because we're going to make
sure we can store all the bikes. And I'll just
make one quick comment that this year has been very
(11:51):
challenging for our community a lot many reasons, but the
suspension of the snap benefits, the government shut down, the
many you know, the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of
families that we're serving this year has grown and the
needs have grown, and Josh there it's going to be
so exciting for these children to have their first bike
(12:13):
or maybe their first new bike. That's a that's a
that's a once in a lifetime event. And then they're
asking for a lot of things that that are a
little uncommon bear essentrals this year. And Hayley, you may
want to share what we're hearing from a lot of
these families.
Speaker 14 (12:29):
Yeah, totally. Hey, hey bowing best, Thanks thanks for having
us on. I look forward to this time of year
to get to talk to y'all. And of course you're
amazing listeners every time. And so yeah, it's it's been
a it's been a different year. And I feel like
we say this every year, but we're seeing a lot
(12:49):
of essentials needed necessities were we've actually seen a lot
of children asking for bedding and socks and.
Speaker 9 (12:58):
Just a code this year.
Speaker 14 (13:00):
Just gosh, it's cold out. You know, getting a new
coat would be awesome at Christmas. And that's what we're
seeing this year, and that's the need. And if anybody
has a coat, or you know, some socks or maybe
some sheets that aren't open and you want to donate
it to a kid, feel free to drop it at
the store, because it's the need this year, and it's
(13:21):
because all of you we can meet those needs.
Speaker 15 (13:23):
Men.
Speaker 4 (13:24):
Well, I'm glad you talked about the other needs because
we talk so much about the bike drive and rightfully so.
But you all continue this work well into the Christmas
week and beyond that even and so for us it
sort of is the starting point. You all have been
working hard already. But tonight is a big night for
(13:44):
collecting bikes. It's a big night for awareness too, and
so that's why and we will we'll follow up with
you after the bike drive and make sure you guys
have what you need and see what more that you need.
But this is, you know, tonight is kind of the
tenth pole night, but it lasts throughout the season, and
I'm glad you mentioned the multiple locations. We should also
remind people that if they want to drop a bike
(14:04):
off at Watson Insurance in Belmont, that's three to two
East Cataba Street in Belmont. If you drop a bike
off there, they will deliver the bikes to us. This
is thanks to a garage door doctor. So there are
a lot of different ways that people can donate. And
again back to the other donations like monetary donations, people
(14:25):
can write a check to Kids First of the Carolinas too,
right deb Brent.
Speaker 13 (14:29):
Yeah, and this is really cool. This year we have
a newly redesigned website. We want to make it really
efficient for people to learn about us. It tells a
great story of the bike drive and the history of
the charity and the community and all the great supporters.
Speaker 9 (14:43):
But Hayley, you may want to talk about that a
little bit.
Speaker 13 (14:45):
We've created ways to donate right on the website very easily,
in addition to an Amazon program.
Speaker 4 (14:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 14 (14:54):
Absolutely, Like you said, Dad, we want to make it
as easy as possible for everyone else to get involved
with kids first. So we updated the website. It's looked
an awesome and Christmas y and we're really excited and
there's a help you can get Involved page, and you
can send a check to our po box. You can
send it right through online. You can also go on
(15:17):
Amazon and purchase a Barbie if you'd like. That'd be awesome.
So you know, there's many ways you can get involved,
and we'd love to just have everybody included with us
this holiday season to make a kid smile.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
Five o'clock we'll start our broadcast here. I look forward
to seeing both of you, and oh my gosh, it's
like Haley said, it's we get to talk. I wish
it wasn't just in December. We need to change that.
But I always look forward to December because we get
to catch up and find out what's been going on.
And so Hancock of course will be with us, Boomer
will be with us out there, all of our WBT staff.
(15:49):
The forecast update for tonight is much better than we
first anticipated. Brent and Haley, we've done cold before, we've
done it all before.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
So we've done snow, rain, cold.
Speaker 13 (16:00):
But that that's great news.
Speaker 9 (16:01):
Bok, that's great.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Anything else that we need to know before.
Speaker 13 (16:05):
Then, just thank you and thank your listeners. I think
we're all locked and loaded. Thirty two years, we're about
to get.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
This thing down absolutely well. Thank you, Brent, Thanks Haley
for calling in too awesome.
Speaker 14 (16:16):
Thank you and bus.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
You guys are amazing and WBT listeners are amazing because
we know what you're gonna do tonight before we even
see it happen. Yeah, lots of bikes here at one
Julian Price Place on this Friday, December fifth. This is
Good Morning Beat with both Hudson and Beth Troutman.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
Shaken, Breakdown, take Down.
Speaker 10 (16:35):
Everybody wants into the crowded line, break down, take Down,
Sheep you bust.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
We always I find a find a reason to play
this song little Bob Zieger for you on a Friday morning.
Mark Harrison, WBT News Director, joining US Operation Safe Season. Yeah,
and this has been first week on the job for
the new police Chief Patterson. She is certainly, you know,
making quick work of things around the Queen City now
(17:06):
that she's in that position.
Speaker 11 (17:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
She called a press conference yesterday to say the public.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Can expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement,
particularly here in the center city.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Short version of that, You're going to see a whole
lot of cops uptown for the rest of the month,
particularly in the evenings when people are uptown. I mean,
you don't go shopping uptown. There's no belks, there's you know,
there are no stores up there, but there's a lot
of entertainment venues uptown. So they're going to have the
highway patrol there, sheriff's deputies extra CMPD officers because and
(17:37):
this was interesting too, Patterson admitted something that CMPD under
Johnny Jennings would not admit, and that is that there
is a crime problem uptown. In fact, a month ago,
a spokesperson for CMPD said, oh, Uptown is absolutely safe. Well,
yesterday Estella Patterson said, no, crime in the center city's
up fifteen percent and we're going to do something about it.
Speaker 5 (18:00):
Yeah, that was a I think that was astounding for
a lot of people to hear because people had been
hearing the statistics that city wide crime was down twenty
percent according to reporting, but up fifteen in the Uptown area.
And you know, I was really impressed with her press
conference yesterday when when she was talking about how she
wants families and visitor visitors and businesses to feel really
(18:21):
confident in Uptown and a place that they can gather
safely and that you're going to see more officers, that
you're going to feel safer, and that people who come
uptown to commit crimes. And I thought this was a
good SoundBite on her behalf coming uptown to commit crimes
will be held accountable.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
In fact, this was one of her bites on feeling safe.
I want them to feel safe.
Speaker 10 (18:43):
I want them to feel that they can walk their dogs,
they can go to the mall, they can do the
things that make this city great.
Speaker 5 (18:49):
But there is that perception that maybe it's not so safe.
Speaker 10 (18:51):
To do that.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
Yeah, and you know what was interesting yesterday also there
they had representatives from the Highway Patrol, the district attorney,
the federal prosecutor was there, the mayor, some city council members.
It was really a political show of force to say, yeah,
we're serious about crime here.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
Well, and you have a weekend, you have tomorrow night
specifically coming up here where the ACC Football Championship is
at Bank of America Stadium, So you're going to have
some people coming into uptown that may not necessarily spend
a lot of time there. And then in a few
weeks you're going to have New Year's Eve festivities. And
we know how that has gone in recent years, and
so you have some opportunities for people maybe, I mean,
(19:31):
you never get a second chance to make a first impression,
but if you're going to see, okay, how are things
in uptown versus the last time I was here, you know,
this is an opportunity for the new police chief to
sort of perhaps give the public a taste of where
she's going to take things. So some opportunities coming up
to make those impressions, I guess.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Mark, Yeah, I think you're right about that.
Speaker 6 (19:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
And what's interesting about this, I think there's been a
lot of back room political pressure on the cops to
do something. Charlotte Center City Partners, you know, they're the
cheerleaders for uptown. They came out a month or so
back and said people don't feel safe uptown. Well, when
you've got your uptown cheerleaders saying that, that does put
pressure on the elected leaders. And something you mentioned, Betoo,
(20:13):
which is interesting. They did tout the fact that, yes,
citywide crime is down twenty percent for the whole year.
What they're not talking about, though, is the third quarter
where we did some calculations. The third quarter violent crime
city wides up five percent, and they're just kind of
not talking about that. But you have to give Patterson credit.
She's coming out and saying, yeah, we've got a problem uptown,
(20:35):
we'll address it. Brett was at the press conference and asked, well,
what about other parts of town and how long will
you keep this going? She said, look, we'll keep this
going as long as we can. And the operation, she said,
is designed that if there's hotspots and other parts of
town that pop up, will go there. And you know,
we should also say that the backdrop here is the
Arena Zarutska murder, back on the light rail in August,
(20:58):
and to the point where it's talking about where people
are comparing what uptown is like since the last time
they were there. There are a lot of people they
are going to say, Okay, the light rail, the whole scene.
A lot of people haven't been uptown since that happened,
and so that's also a measuring stick for a lot
of people. I think I think you're right. I think
all of that publicity around the light rail murder has
(21:20):
kind of spooked a lot of people about going uptown.
I know I've talked to some people who go, no,
I don't want to go up there because they just
have that.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
Fear, especially those folks who were going, who had plans
to go uptown at any given point for an event
and planned on parking somewhere more affordable and taking the
light rail in, and now they're having and so many
people have had second thoughts about that.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
Well, and I'll tell you another problem, or the parking
decks uptown. I know that recently some family members and
I went to dinner uptown, and I mean there were
some creepy guys hanging around the parking deck. And she
sort of addressed that yesterday. She said, Look, we are
going after quality of life crimes, people who hang out panhandling.
She specifically said they were going after panhandlers. That will
(22:03):
make people feel safer too, because when you've got some
guy hitting you up for money in a dark parking deck,
that doesn't make you feel very safe either.
Speaker 5 (22:11):
Well, and no one has any money in those parking decks,
because if you park there for an hour, you take
twenty six dollars.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
That's the truth.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
Don't get me started on getting to that kiosk and
realizing I was two dollars short.
Speaker 5 (22:23):
Huh.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
I think the last time I had dinner uptown, we
spent thirty bucks in a parking.
Speaker 5 (22:28):
Yeah, we went to the auto show a couple of
weeks ago and it was twenty six dollars.
Speaker 4 (22:31):
So basically you went and parked and then went to McDonald's.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Thank you, Mark, Yes, sir, If I get another three muskets, heres,
I'm gonna kill myself.
Speaker 5 (22:41):
What's wrong with three musketeers? What's wrong with three muskets?
Speaker 9 (22:44):
Heres?
Speaker 1 (22:44):
Watch three Musketeers?
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Yeah, it's just nugat. Oh, just nugat, just nugat.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
It's top three for.
Speaker 5 (22:50):
Me, Top three, top three.
Speaker 14 (22:52):
Oh god, your great.
Speaker 5 (22:54):
I could do like a whole bowl of n.
Speaker 4 (23:01):
So, Steve, are you still stuck on episode two? Or
if you watched them all?
Speaker 1 (23:07):
You finished it?
Speaker 5 (23:08):
What do you think of that end?
Speaker 4 (23:11):
Think of that ending of the end? That's not really
the end, the end, that's not the end. It's the
end of part one?
Speaker 6 (23:16):
How about that?
Speaker 4 (23:17):
Right in we're talking about Stranger Things and four episodes
into part one of three for season five, but we've
been talking about it for me.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
I'm I'm on season one, episode three. Don't ruin anything
after that.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
But Steve finally watched You're up to date? Shall we say?
Speaker 6 (23:33):
Correct?
Speaker 5 (23:34):
Did you cry? At the end, I did did they
ruin it?
Speaker 11 (23:37):
Like?
Speaker 3 (23:37):
Did it take away that they it did? Oh, he's
mad at you? Okay, So it was an aggressive head nod.
Speaker 4 (23:43):
I bring up stranger things because of course it is
the crown jewel right now of Netflix. But Netflix is
about to get even bigger, if that's possible, if this
deal goes through. Because Deadline reporting overnight and a couple
of other reputable entities, Netflix has emerged victorious in what
(24:03):
appears to be the highest and so far the winning
bid for Warner Brothers Discovery, and so they're basically entering
into an exclusive negotiating period here, and the outcome stands
to reason that it's it's going to end with Netflix.
Paramount was aggressively trying to counter an offer here, but
apparently Netflix has emerged at the head of the pack here.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
Yeah, they've offered what amounts to basically twenty eight dollars
a share for Warner Brothers Discovery, and this would make them,
as bo was alluding to, the most powerful production company
really in the world. And I felt like something was
going on with these two companies because recently and I've
been on Netflix probably more than normal, because I was
(24:47):
watching The Stranger Things, the final season, the first four episodes,
and also I have now become obsessed with The Big Sea,
which just came out on It was a Showtime show
like a decade ago, but I never watched it because
I never had Showtime and it just came to Netflix
and I've been watching it. But that's an aside. There
have been so there have been a handful of HBO
original shows that are suddenly appearing on Netflix, like The
(25:11):
Staircases Out Insecure, How to Make It in America, Dune.
I saw Love and Death all on Netflix, and these
were HBO created series. So I started wondering if something
was on the on the on the in the like
in the background.
Speaker 4 (25:27):
Well, and listen to what you just said. Not only
did you talk about HBO shows, You've mentioned show Touch,
Showtime show, like all these different We talk about how
much of a mishmash the streaming world is now, but
in the end, in the end, they all seem to
come to Netflix. Because same thing with now. Netflix was
partly you know, commissioned the documentary. But the very famous
(25:49):
Last Dance Jordan ten part ESPN thirty for thirty is
now on Netflix. A lot of these things finally end
up at Netflix.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
You remember when, I mean, obviously all of us were.
We're old enough to remember when Netflix was a mail
service for DVDs and you had to go online and
you put movies in your queue and you got so
excited when the movies arrived in your mailbox.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
Look at them. They're trying to take on Blockbuster.
Speaker 5 (26:12):
Yes, and if you've there was a there used to
be a podcast that was called like Industry Wars or
Business Wars, and they did a three part series on
the Blockbuster versus Netflix. And Netflix could have sold, like
Blockbuster could have acquired Netflix for something ridiculous like fifteen
million dollars I mean some I can't remember the exact number.
(26:33):
And then the Blockbuster CEO decided instead to invest all
of his money and all of the company's money in
brick and mortar. And Netflix didn't sell, and it turned
out to be this great, great thing, obviously for Netflix,
not a great thing for Blockbuster. But when Netflix first
became a streaming service, don't you remember all of us
(26:54):
thinking like, there's nothing to watch on there, there's nothing
to see. They've got the only thing that people would
go to the reruns of the office. That was basically
what people went to Netflix for. And now Netflix has
created so many brilliant documentary series, so many interesting original
series that they have just put money, a lot of
(27:14):
their money into. And now if they acquire HBO two
and acquire that catalog and the power of that company
as well, I don't know that anybody's ever going to
be able to take on Netflix.
Speaker 4 (27:24):
It's just this revolving cycle of things when you think
about it, because we complained that. You know, when we
were growing up, you just got cable and you got everything,
and then streaming has you know, everything splintered, and now
in the end, maybe Netflix is just going to own
everything and it's all going to be in one place again.
It's going to take a while, but maybe that's where
(27:45):
this is all going. Well, we have one channel, it's
called Netflix.
Speaker 3 (27:49):
How terrible though to to five dollars a month.
Speaker 5 (27:53):
We're going to be paying seventy five dollars a month
for that. But that would squash out any any competing
competition from production companies, and I think that was I
think that's been part of the hardest part of seeing
such a huge, iconic company like Warner Brothers suddenly being
gobbled up, and we saw the sky Dance Paramount merger
and then suddenly Paramount for a while seemed to be
(28:15):
a front runner in what could be this merger as well.
But we're going to have so few production companies and
really creating the content that influences and inspires a generation
of people.
Speaker 6 (28:29):
Yeah, true that.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Yeah, I mean it's it's kind of depressing when.
Speaker 5 (28:33):
Right, because you don't end up because think about how
pop culture. We talk about pop culture from our youth
a lot on this show. I mean, think about how
shows like The Jefferson's and Mama's Family and and It's
a Cosby show. Well, all of that influenced us as
young people.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Well you may wonder, Okay, so HBO, Yeah, HBO is important.
But we're talking about Warner Brothers HBO, and you're talking
about DC Comics, and you're talking about Harry Potter, you're
talking about for old schoolers, Hannah Barbera and all these
old Warner Brothers library things. I mean, it really brings
so much under one roof when you talk about these companies.
And again, when you're thinking about most of these companies,
(29:15):
they are already a version, a collected version of other
companies that join together because you can't compete anymore with
the resources to make things if you don't pull those
resources with all of these well known entities. I mean,
that's pretty much what it is. If you have a
streaming service in twenty twenty five, you have to be
able to say, hey, we have this that you can't
(29:35):
get anywhere else. That's what you mentioned the office that
originally was on Netflix. Then the launching point or one
of them for NBC's Peacock was they took the office
and they put it only there. You can only see
the Olympics in their full form there if you don't.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
SNL is only there.
Speaker 4 (29:53):
And they've been able to build Peacock because of those properties.
But if you don't have exclusivity, then you're kind of
out there, just kind of flailing in the wind. Well.
Speaker 5 (30:01):
And what's so weird is the the I used to
work at the Warner Brothers studio, the Warner Brothers lot,
which is an iconic lot in Burbank.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
I've been there.
Speaker 6 (30:08):
I've been there.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
Was a good morning.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
I saw the poll. She rode a bike, in't you.
Speaker 5 (30:14):
This is a true story I did.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
On my first day, I took a picture of it
that senatory.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
But there's a giant water tower with the Warner Brothers logo,
and now is it going to say Netflix on it?
Speaker 1 (30:26):
There's President Bartlett. He's a nicer bike.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
I did ride my bike right into a pole Guys Day.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
One on that note, good Morning Bet soon to be
on Netflix. I mean it's probably true eventually, I think so.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
So anyway, our number one in the can. Three more
to come here on good Morning Bet. Shit on a NERD.
Speaker 6 (30:53):
Cheerios you.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
I want to just follow my mouse from Me's talk
eleven Tree, doublet.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
This isn't we have a four who has Andre and dry?
Speaker 4 (31:04):
This is good morning Beat with boats hubs in a
bed Trout but thank you, am high school man. Friday
morning in the Tyboid Studio, December fifth, Hancocks Bikes for
Kids Bike Night, five o'clock. This afternoon we'll be on
(31:27):
the air yours truly, Beth Troutman Brett Winterble to kick
things off and throughout the evening you'll hear from everybody
on staff here.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
And I got five o'clock.
Speaker 4 (31:36):
Yeah, so hear it from Jim's okie at five oh one.
Speaker 3 (31:39):
It's just the way our night planned out and there's
just a lot going on. But I want to be
there at the beginning because that's that's when it all begins,
at the beginning, as.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
Opposed to the end, which is the conclusion, when it
stops at the market close, the end of the market clothes.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
You guys, remember that one year, like we're like doing
the sign off, like there was a car wreck.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
Yes, that was my first one. That was my first.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
Like there's loud noises, we're getting ready to go off
the air.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
Yeah, yeah, I'll never forget that.
Speaker 4 (32:07):
As it started raining, there was an accident and it
involved one of the trucks from WBTV here, and so
all of us like in the final seconds of the show,
we're doing the thank yous, and then all of a
sudden you hear a very audible crash, and then all
of us basically just kind of left and ran down there,
ran down the hill, and everybody ended up being okay,
and we're and it was it was actually a night
(32:30):
very much like this morning is where you've got rain
coming down and it's kind of hard to see and
and so uh yeah, that was uh just goes to
show you we've been doing this for so long. There's
there's a story for every year, and that one was
not a great way to end, but a good way
to end, and that that it ended up being okay.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
Everybody was okay.
Speaker 4 (32:47):
We we were finishing up the broadcast and everybody, of
course Field that feared the worst. But you know we'
we'll have people out here tonight to help direct traffic
and get you in and get you out of one
Julian Price play. But we are very excited about this.
It's something that we still have our connection to John
Hancock with Hancock willby in studio later on this morning.
(33:09):
Dan Mkowski from the Charlotte Knights is going to be
in studio later on with us. There are a couple
of other cameos that may be made today that I
have I have word about.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
So word up, word up.
Speaker 5 (33:22):
You got a surprise all of us.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Big surprise yesterday for one Carolina Panther. This is the
time of year when they announced the nominees for the
Walter Payton Man of the Year in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
Every team has a nominee.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
You can remember in years past where Greg Olsen was
the nominee, but this year Carolina Panthers, Austin Corbett is
the nominee, and I didn't know this. Austin Corbett is
a big Metallica fan, so listen to how they told
him yesterday at a team meeting.
Speaker 16 (33:52):
Hey, Austin, Austin, it's James and Robert here from Metallica. Austen,
we know that you are a leader in the locker
room as well as in your community. And aside from
everything you're doing for all within my hands, you've also
done so much for service members, youth, high school football programs,
(34:15):
and families with children who have life altering disabilities, which
is why we're excited to tell you you are the
Carolina Panthers twenty twenty five NFL Walter Payton.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
Manity Year nominee.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
How about that get the lead singer of Metallica telling
you that you're up for this award.
Speaker 5 (34:38):
The Panthers are getting really good at this. They are
getting really good at surprising their team and I think
having these fun team building moments because a few weeks ago,
when the guy did the yea, Michael Key Keeg and
Michael Key surprised them in the locker room after the
grunt and push or whatever it was.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
They know people, they know people. Of course Batallica played here,
so they probably have a relationship.
Speaker 6 (34:58):
Oh Golton ber Grunt and push.
Speaker 5 (35:00):
Yeah, what is it called them?
Speaker 6 (35:03):
Grunt and push? You know that thing the kids do?
Speaker 3 (35:08):
Oh yeah, grunt and push. Bill Napier first show that.
Speaker 6 (35:15):
I still want to let that go by. We glossed
over that one.
Speaker 1 (35:20):
Has a Bill Napier said at the end of the market.
Close time it all together.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
Now anyway, Austin Corbett, Yeah, way to go, Austin.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
He's a great guy. He's a great interview first of all,
which is a key in journalism, but great guy obviously
as well. And he's had three years of just non
related injuries that just happened and just keeps coming back
and playing. So it's it's cool to see that because
he has to deal with these, like you know, season
ending recoveries and injuries, and he's just a big part
(35:53):
of uh kind of the culture, I guess, especially when
you deal with the offensive line. It's such a tight
knit group. So that's cool. And the Metallica thing, it
was great.
Speaker 5 (36:01):
Do you think that that helps. I don't know who
votes on this, who ends up picking who the Man
of the Year actually becomes, but does does this help
that it gets a little story going behind the fact
that he was nominated.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
Does it hurt?
Speaker 5 (36:13):
Doesn't hurt?
Speaker 15 (36:13):
It does?
Speaker 3 (36:14):
Vote for that, Jim, I don't even know.
Speaker 6 (36:16):
I'm not sure.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
It's like it's all thirty two teams have one nominee,
Eli and Peyton Man.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
Well, hang on, Thomas.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
Davis has won it. Mirk Olson has been a final.
Speaker 4 (36:25):
I think fans have a because I don't you remember
the campaign for a Twitter campaign for Greg Olsen several
years back where they were talking about vote, vote vote.
I think there's an element of the fan vote here too.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
For that's cool too, because again, a story like this
one makes the fact that he was nominated potentially go
viroller get more attention. It might get him more votes.
He could end up being the Man of the Year.
Speaker 4 (36:48):
And of course they make the announcement at the NFL
Honors ceremony, which is the night before the Super Bowl.
So it's going to be a while before we find
out who wins. But I don't know when they start
narrowing down on the field. But at any rate, every
team has a nominee and Austin Corbett is the latest.
And like Zoke said, you know, he's he's a guy
(37:09):
who has had some injury issues over the years, but
he's one of the especially in a season like this
where you're making a run, those locker room guys are
so important and.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
Good to see it happen to a good guy.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
Yes, I talked to him probably about a month ago
and did a pregame interview with him, and I said,
just having come back, because he's further into his career,
I go, did you just have a great appreciation of
just being in the NFL, like just existing and having
a career And he said, yeah. He went out for
like two three minutes about just talking about just his
appreciation of having, you know, even having to deal with
(37:43):
the injuries, just having the ability to be a part
of something like the NFL and to play because it's
such a dream come true to come to that point.
And the fact that he and his family are so
involved in the community obviously just adds to all that well.
Speaker 5 (37:54):
And that's I mean, really if you think about that too,
the remarkable amount of insight that that shows you that
he has, because so many people can't appreciate where they
are in the moment. You know, so many people are
consistently looking forward to this.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
Wherever you are, you want me that next wrong, whatever
that ladder is, and life is so sad. President want
you want to be it twice right.
Speaker 5 (38:16):
But the moment is life is so so much better
if you can appreciate where you are in the moment
that you're in it, because that means that you're present.
You're not looking at the past and with regret, you're
not looking to the future with anticipation or anxiety. Instead,
you're appreciating where you are. So that tells you something
about who he is as a.
Speaker 4 (38:34):
Man of the Year man, a Man of the Year,
Walter Peyton man, Walter Payton, a Man of the Year nominee,
Austin Corbett. So we'll keep an eye on that as
we get into the latter part of the season and
into the postseason.
Speaker 2 (38:47):
This is Good Morning BET.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
Seven US Talk eleven ten, nine to nine three WBT
on this Friday morning, boen Beth here in time to
welcome to the WBT hotline. US Congressman Mark Harris. And
that's a that's a lofty title, US Congressman. I always
say that when I talk to him, but today he's
got an additional one.
Speaker 5 (39:10):
Oh my gosh, Congressman Harris, you texted us a picture
of the most beautiful little boy. Congratulations on your eleventh grandchild.
Am I right about that?
Speaker 9 (39:25):
That's correct. Our eleventh grand baby was born at three
thirty this morning, so we're pretty pumped.
Speaker 5 (39:32):
Can you tell us his name?
Speaker 9 (39:34):
His name is James Washington Harris.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
Oh so great.
Speaker 9 (39:38):
He was born this morning at three thirty and yesterday
was his due date. And boy they did well too.
My son said they headed to the hospital at two
thirty nine, or parked at two thirty nine, and the
baby was born at three thirty, so that was pretty
good timing.
Speaker 15 (39:55):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (39:55):
So from now on, I'm going to say not only
a US congressman, but eleven times grand father.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Well, you know, you know what?
Speaker 5 (40:02):
You know how the President or the White House posted
the picture the other day of President Trump in front
of the White House and it said Daddy's home. So
we're going to with you. We're just going to say
grand Daddy's home. No, no, no, no, We're going to
say poppies home.
Speaker 1 (40:17):
We're gonna say eleven time poppies home.
Speaker 5 (40:20):
Eleven time poppies.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
That's impressive.
Speaker 4 (40:22):
Eleven So congratulations wanted to start out with that great
news and and really the most important thing of all
in your world and and to think about this morning,
but we have politics and political headlines to get to.
First thing I want to ask you is you have
been very much of a watchdog on crime in your
district this year. Of course, Arena's Law was signed a
(40:45):
few weeks ago, a lot of people we were just
talking to Mark Garrison about, you know, people's willingness to
go back into Uptown after the crime spree that we've
seen in recent months. Now we have a new police chief,
Police Stella Patterson, who took office officially this week and
has just started this Operation Safe Season into Uptown Charlotte,
(41:08):
and it really it begins today and for this foreseeable
future coming up, just an added contingent of law enforcement
presence in the Uptown area. You have been, like I said,
very involved. And of course they had that hearing a
couple months ago with the congressional hearing about what happened
(41:28):
in the wake of the Arena Zarutska murder. What are
your thoughts on what's happening here on a local level
that you.
Speaker 9 (41:34):
See well, Listen, first of all, Kudo's the chief Patterson.
I appreciate the commitment that she has made to increasing
the presence, to sharing the information that she shared. You know,
our big thing has been that when we sent the
letter to the governor asking for the National Guard again,
(41:54):
it was about bringing support because of Paternal Order of
Police had pointed out that we were short so many
policemen two hundred and seventy some policeman short that they
felt like was necessary to adequately police and protect the citizens.
And we had seen that spike in crime uptown in
that particular area. So again I have great hopes. You know,
(42:19):
one of the things that I think she had been
noted for was her ability to recruit cops, and I
had done a strong recruitment campaign when she went over
to Raleigh, and that being the big need that we have. Look,
how we get it done is not as important to
me as getting it done and giving the citizens of
(42:40):
Charlotte so that we can go uptown, so that we
can all the surrounding areas that I represent, so that
people can feel safe when they come into Charlotte. You know,
all the events that you mentioned are coming up this
weekend and the following weekends here in December and so
I'm encouraged by what we're hearing and the attempts and
(43:02):
that she's taking. I think this is a great start
for her and all.
Speaker 5 (43:06):
Of the work that you're doing there. You posted on
X a few days ago. I wanted to make sure
that we highlighted this so that you could talk about it.
You posted, I am fighting to stop universities from discriminating
against home schoolers. No student should be treated as a
second class applicant. You have a new bill that you're supporting.
Speaker 9 (43:28):
Yeah, we dropped the bill this week that we're very
very thankful for, and that's Homeschool Graduation Recognition Act. And
primarily what that does best is it makes it really illegal,
if you will, so that no student should ever face
discrimination during the college admissions process simply because they're homeschooled.
(43:52):
There are universities that are still treating homeschoolers like second
class applicants, requiring them to come up with the documentation
additional testing and listen, from my perspective, when a homeschooler
has completed all of their work, they go through the
college application process and uh they take an SAT and
(44:12):
submit it, or an ACT and submit it, and that
and the school looks at those scores, they ought to
they ought to accept that person based on everything that
they see there, not have them do additional things. And
we're we're finding and it was brought to my attention
that that we have some universities basically like the University
(44:33):
of Phoenix has never accepted a homeschool student's high school diploma.
They have a requirement that all homeschool graduates have to
take the GED. Well that's just not that's not right.
So there's three million homeschoolers across the country. I think
it's important that they be treated fairly uh in the
college application process like everybody else, and not being given
(44:57):
extra layers of hoops to jump through in order to
be accepted. So we're excited about introducing this bill this
week and we'll be looking to build co sponsors and
hopefully move it across the finish line.
Speaker 5 (45:11):
You just alluded to it that you heard some personal stories.
Do you want to expand on that. What it was
that made you want to focus on this issue. Was
it constituents concerns coming to you. Was it a personal
experience that you had with a friend or a family
member that really inspired this legislation?
Speaker 9 (45:28):
Well, we're really inspired. It was when homeschoolers in general
came to us and made us aware of what was happening.
There's Pimco Tech in New Jersey is, for instance, a
school that required that if a student's home state doesn't
have state approved homeschooling agency, then they've got to provide
(45:50):
proof of passing again a high school equivalency test a GED.
And then we also saw where there was a University
of Maloy University that requires home schoolers have to have
a letter from the local school district officials confirming that
student has received an education that they identify as quote
substantially equivalent to instruction given to students graduating from their
(46:14):
local high school. So again, these were just barriers that
were unnecessary. Again, home school students, just like public school
students or private school or Christian school students, ought to
be able to get their education, and then their applications
to college ought to stand right alongside the same.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
This is good Morning.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
Btight on WBT going Beck here in the Tyboid studio
on your Friday, December fifth six. Story breaking yesterday, shortly
after we were off the ERA, Northern Virginia man arrested
and accused of placing two pipe bombs outside the Democratic
National Committe and Republican National Committee headquarters on the eve
(47:03):
of the Capitol Riots on January sixth of twenty twenty one.
This according to federal authorities announced yesterday. Deputy FBI Director
Dan Bongino on Fox last night.
Speaker 17 (47:15):
This investigation's just begun. We are pretty comfortable. We have
our guy, I think is again. Legal process starts to
service and information facts start to come out. The public's
going to be very comfortable with the investigation that was
conducted under Director Patel and his leadership.
Speaker 1 (47:32):
He's been great on this, but I don't want to listen.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
I was paid in the.
Speaker 17 (47:37):
Past, Sean, for my opinions, that's clear, and one day
I'll be back in that space.
Speaker 1 (47:41):
But that's not what I'm paid for now.
Speaker 17 (47:43):
I'm paid to be your deputy director, and we base
investigations on facts.
Speaker 4 (47:47):
Bngino talking to Sean Hannity last night. Now, the news
conference was held yesterday. Attorney General Pam Bondi identified the
suspect as Brian Cole Junior, a thirty year old from Woodbridge, Virginia,
located just out of DC. He was charged with the
use of an explosive device. Of course, you had Cash Mattel,
the FBI director, at that news conference yesterday as well.
(48:09):
Congressman Mark Harris continues with us, I know you were
watching this yesterday, you have thoughts.
Speaker 9 (48:16):
Well, first of all, I'm very very grateful for the
work that we see the FBI and really all of
the investigators that were involved in this yesterday. The fact
that they were able to bring this person in charge
him is just amazing a case that in many people's
(48:37):
minds had kind of gone cold. I think that, you know,
five years it's been going on, and here when you
think that in these first eight months of Cash Betel's
leadership at the FBI, Deputy Director Bonzino, who you were
just playing the clip there from him, I just I
was very very encouraged that they were able to take
(48:59):
the information. And then the big takeaway was there was
really no new tip, there was nothing. They just basically
took the information and it was intents, intents, police work
and detective work that they were able to do this.
And I'm very grateful.
Speaker 5 (49:16):
One of the reasons we have many reasons why we
love having you as a weekly guest on our show,
but we love getting inside information from you about what's
going on in Washington. Maybe some of the conversations you
get to have that we don't get to have. But
Axios had a story earlier this week and it says,
and maybe you can give us some insight because maybe
you've talked with some of these people, But it says
(49:37):
members of the House of Representatives are quitting Congress at
a record rate, with Republican retirements and resignations outpacing Democrats
by nearly two to one in the first eleven months
of the year. Have you had any conversations with some
of these folks who have decided to resign or decided
not to run again, And is there any indication of
(49:58):
what it is that is is creating this large number
of retirements.
Speaker 9 (50:04):
Well, let me be clear, first of all, anytime you
read an article, there's usually more to the story, and
a lot of these are not just retiring. A lot
of these are running for other offices. I mean the
number includes those that are running for governor. I know
you've got Ralph Norman, a colleague of mine, running for
(50:25):
governor in South Carolina. You've got Andy Biggs, another colleague
of mine, running for governor in Arizona. You've got Tom Tiffany,
a colleague of mine, running for a governor in Wisconsin.
You've got Chip Roy, a friend and colleague that's running
for attorney general down in Texas. So you do have
a number of those that are not coming back, that
are actually running for a different office this time, and
(50:47):
so that's always important to factor that in the number.
A number of folks have basically just made the decision
they've been there long enough. You know, we talk about
term limits all the time, and we talked about what's
the magic number. Is it three terms, four terms? Is
it ten years, which would be five terms? Should that
be the limit? Anybody should serve? Some of these folks
(51:10):
are just deciding, hey, I've been here long enough, I've
done what i can do, and I'm stepping away. So sure,
there's always two or three that want to make a
lot of noise on their way out or say I'm irritated,
I'm frustrated. There's always going to be highs and lows
in this job. There are going to be moments of frustration.
And in fact, I was speaking in an event this
(51:31):
past Monday in Charlotte before I got on the flight
to leave and Ted Cruz was also there. And one
of the things that Senator Cruz as we were chatting,
he was asking me how my first year was going
and what it was like for me, and I said,
you know, I am enjoying it. I felt like I'm
where I'm supposed to be, doing what I'm supposed to
be doing. And he said, well, look, he said, there
(51:52):
are going to be highs and lows in this role.
But he said, if you ever do get discouraged, just
stop and remember what was the compless this year in
this Congress so far, and the one big beautiful bill.
There were so many conservative victories, things that we ran on,
things that we've been fighting for that he said, probably
more was in that bill than a number of years
(52:15):
that you could have served or that I've even served
in Washington and what we've been able to accomplish. So
that was an encouraging word. There was so much in
there that we really haven't completely unpacked it in our
messaging as we go forward. So I'm not retiring. In fact,
I'm headed to Raleigh today to file for reelection, and
(52:35):
so that's kind of where I sense things are right now.
Speaker 5 (52:39):
Well, congratulations on filing that's a big day.
Speaker 9 (52:42):
Thank you. It is being fighting time and I'll get
to see grand baby.
Speaker 4 (52:46):
At the same time, I was about to say we
were about to do our weekly segment tell me something
good or I'm sorry, but you actually started it a
little bit early because who's gonna tap being an eleven
time grandparents?
Speaker 9 (52:58):
Right, Hey, Poppy is going to be in the house here,
you go over to.
Speaker 4 (53:04):
It all right, Well, so justice once, I won't be
as official as I usually am with any elected official.
Instead of saying what I normally say, I'm want to say,
thanks Poppy, great conversation.
Speaker 9 (53:17):
Enjoyed being with you all. Have a great weekend, and
we'll look forward to talking next Friday.
Speaker 1 (53:21):
Yes, sir, that's Poppy joining us here on Good Morning BT.
Speaker 5 (53:25):
We're probably the only show in America who calls us
sitting in Congressman Poppy.
Speaker 6 (53:29):

to be in Thanksgivings to come a.

We're already getting text messages bo Thompson and I love it.
People wanting to make sure that good news is spread
over the fifty thousand watts because there are even though
we get some negative headlines, there are really beautiful things
happening in families, in neighborhoods and communities everywhere. Christian texted
and said, hey, Bo and Beth, this is Christian. I'm
(55:11):
not sure why I'm texting you guys so frequently. I'd
just like to listen to you guys on WBT. In fact,
I love WBT and I listen every day. Anyway, I
have some good news that I would like to share
with you. My first niece, Harlowe, was born last Thursday,
on Thanksgiving Day.
Speaker 6 (55:28):
That's great.
Speaker 5 (55:28):
Wow, I got that name, Harlow. What a fabulous name.
Speaker 4 (55:32):
Every every birthday from now on you get turkey and football.
Speaker 1 (55:36):
Yeah, what a way to live and babies.
Speaker 5 (55:38):
Well, Thanksgiving falls on different Thursdays, but but so sometimes
her Harlowe's birthday will fall on Thanksgiving Day. But more on,
Cassidy Hooper, I want to.
Speaker 1 (55:49):
I want to make sure I hate myself.
Speaker 4 (55:52):
Yeah right past, I know, and I'm trying to be
cute and I got a little too cute.
Speaker 5 (55:58):

Speaker 4 (56:00):
Well, some birthdays like it's gonna be like leap here,
like every few birthdays she a Thanksgiving birthday, right, Let's
on to Christmas, please, our.
Speaker 5 (56:08):
Favorite listener, Cassidy Hooper said, good morning, it's Cassidy. I
just wanted to let everyone know that the gold Standard
Chorus and the Queen Charlotte Chorus have a concert tomorrow
at two pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The price is
twenty five dollars at the door, twenty bucks online at
the Queen Charlotte's website, which is www dot. I know,
(56:29):

Standard Courus tomorrow two pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Speaker 5 (56:47):
Justin texted, I'm celebrating going out tonight with my wife
for her early birthday dinner. Gonna try a new Italian restaurant.
You know what, Justin, I love little things like that.
I went out this to dinner with five of my friends.
We've known each other since we were twelve years old.
We had dinner last night to celebrate the holidays together
and what a delight that was just to get together,
(57:07):
no phones on the table, we all just sat and
laughed and talked and ate fantastic food. So justin I'm
feeling it. Happy birthday or early birthday to your wife.
Tammy says, Hey, Bo and Beth, my daughter flew home
from California for Thanksgiving and has been here all week.
It has been so wonderful to spend special time with her,
(57:28):
and I think things like that. Saying things like that
out loud remind us all that we need to stop
pay attention to the good things happening in our lives,
Hug the people who matter, Hug the people around us,
and focus on them.
Speaker 2 (57:42):
Time.
Speaker 4 (57:44):
Let's go to Jay online number one. Jay is holding
seven oh four, five, seven oh eleven ten. Jay tell
us something good?
Speaker 3 (57:51):
How are you love it.
Speaker 5 (57:52):
When you call us Jay?
Speaker 15 (57:54):
Good morning, Bets and Bo, thanks for taking my call.
Love This segment every Friday really starts my day. I
want to tell you a very quick story about a
guy named Jean. So, my mom and dad have been
very active in serving the homeless community in Charlotte for
the last several years, and about ten years ago they
met a gentleman named Jean. Jean immigrated to the United
States from Haiti back in the eighties. And he's had
(58:17):
a long and winding road with ups and downs. But
about ten years ago he was homeless, and my mom
and dad became friends with him and helped him to
establish stable housing, stable employment. He's now got a nice
little apartment with a steady job, and Gene has been
spending Thanksgiving and Christmas with our family over the last
(58:39):
decade and it's been such a blessing just to share
his wisdom, share his humor, and for my children to
grow up seeing just this spirit of giving, this spirit
of love. And last Thursday on Thanksgiving, as Jean left
the Thanksgiving dinner, he handed each of us a card,
my family, my mom and dad, and my sister's family
a card and was a Thanksgiving But inside each of
(59:00):
those cards was one hundred dollars bill. And I just
know that that one hundred dollars bill times three was
a very big percentage of teens take home pay. And
it just speaks to me about just the spirit of love,
the spirit of generosity, and it's really what Thanksgivings all about.
Speaker 5 (59:16):
So wanted to share that this morning, Jay, that I
am so so glad and so grateful that you called
to tell us that story, because what you just did
was maybe remind people to connect with someone, to reach
out and to help those who are less fortunate, and
that you just never know what you're doing for another
(59:37):
human being and how much it opens their hearts. Oh
my gosh, Jay, that's the best story I have heard
all week.
Speaker 15 (59:44):
Well, I'm glad I could share it. I hope you
both have a wonderful.
Speaker 1 (59:47):
Day you too, Jay, Thank you, Jay, Thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (59:50):
A great Thanksgiving story and a good reminder that Thanksgiving
is not always on the same day. Tell us something
good to buy cars for kids who remind you to
donate before the end of the year.
Speaker 1 (01:00:04):
It's one of my favorite parts of the week.
Speaker 4 (01:00:08):
When I gotta say, I gotta say it wasn't Good
Day News Talk eleven ten, nine to nine to three WBT.
You're giving me the thumbs up something else.
Speaker 5 (01:00:19):
Well, we have something really really good coming up, Yes,
and I I just I have to put it there
because it's been a really good week. It's been a
really good week.
Speaker 2 (01:00:31):

Then?
Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
This is Good Morning Bet with Bo Thompson and Beth Trout.
Speaker 6 (01:00:53):

Speaker 4 (01:01:00):

December fifth, coming to you live from the historic Ty
Boyd Studio at one Julian Price Place. Let me say
that again, one Julian Price Place, because that is where
tonight the thirty second annual Hancock's Bikes for Kids will
(01:01:21):
get underway at five pm. Bring a bike, bring a truckload,
Bring however many you can get.
Speaker 3 (01:01:28):
Bring a truck. Yeah, I drop a truck off for
a kid.
Speaker 1 (01:01:31):
Bring an eighteen wheeler?
Speaker 3 (01:01:33):
What kid would want that?
Speaker 6 (01:01:34):
That's a heck of a bike there.
Speaker 4 (01:01:36):
And I say, bring an eighteen wheeler. I know that's
going to happen tonight. That's part of how it works
every time, and maybe more than one. Doctor Revin Miller,
that's exactly right. Doctor Evan will be in the house
and we'll have just an incredible scene here tonight at
one Julian Price Place. The legacy that doctor Miller has
(01:01:57):
created with Hancock and all of those participate in this tonight.
We we just can't thank you enough. And five pm
tonight is when it all starts. We'll have Dan Rakowski
from the Charlotte Knights in studio a bit later, and
we have some other surprises of people that may be
cycling through that I have cycling.
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
Don't act like you didn't do that on purpose. Look
at that proud face. You are so pleased with you.
Speaker 5 (01:02:21):
I feel like that deserves a humble.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
That was a good morning, bet What did.
Speaker 3 (01:02:28):
It be great if they all came in. I'm like
Dan Rokowski comes in on bicycle.
Speaker 6 (01:02:32):
I'm rolling through them bicycles for children?
Speaker 3 (01:02:34):
What are you cycling through?
Speaker 1 (01:02:37):
Well, we hope. So tonight five o'clock it starts.
Speaker 4 (01:02:40):
We'll be doing the broadcast, Bethel, and it'll be on
the air with me and Brett Winterbole starting at five.
Speaker 1 (01:02:45):
Zolk will be in the house.
Speaker 3 (01:02:46):
W BT's Jim Zokie at five o'h five.
Speaker 1 (01:02:49):
Who are we kidding?
Speaker 3 (01:02:49):
Five oh one? We happen to be uh loaded up tonight,
so I'll be there till about twenty.
Speaker 6 (01:02:55):
What you did there, Jim getting loaded Jim loaded up.
Speaker 3 (01:02:58):
Yeah, I'm just cycling through.
Speaker 4 (01:03:02):
So we do tell me something good at seven fifty.
We usually do it on Fridays. I'm here to tell
you seven o five on Monday. Seven five on Monday,
I highly recommend that you be near a speaker that
is blasting WBT because set.
Speaker 5 (01:03:24):
Your alarm, set your calendar, set your phone reminders.
Speaker 1 (01:03:28):
I can tell you this.
Speaker 4 (01:03:28):
I've been working here twenty nine years collectively, i have
never made a bigger announcement that I'm going to make
on Monday at seven o five as it relates to
this radio station. Been around for one hundred and three years,
We've seen some big things. The one hundredth anniversary back in.
Speaker 11 (01:03:47):
Back in.
Speaker 4 (01:03:49):
The theater a few years ago, that scene, I'll never forget.
That was a big moment. And you know the Carolina
Panthers the day we found out they were going to
be on WBT as the flagship station back in nineteen
ninety five. We can think of a lot of things. Zoe,
you've been around here for a long time. Beth you
are you've been with this almost four years.
Speaker 3 (01:04:06):
Wow, and you're one hundred and three.
Speaker 1 (01:04:08):
I've basically Wow, it's a big deal waited to flight.
My balloon over here is an incredible bath.
Speaker 4 (01:04:19):
What was it like here back in twenty twenty two?
So twenty twenty two was a big year for the station.
Twenty twenty two, the station turned one hundred and many
of you there were there to celebrate with us.
Speaker 5 (01:04:33):
And I came in. I came in, and Jim Zochi
and his Hall of Fame speech made a point to
point this out that I came in at ninety nine
years in fifty one weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:04:42):
She's been there for ninety nine minutes working with us
at that point.
Speaker 1 (01:04:45):
Yeah, and he managed to work that into his Hall
of Fame speech.
Speaker 3 (01:04:48):
Yes, yeah, I didn't go along and that sorry about them.
Speaker 4 (01:04:50):
No, but he shouted out Beth Troutman and her her
long and enduring career.
Speaker 3 (01:04:54):
Here, I remember Bath when she started last week.
Speaker 6 (01:04:59):
You knew someone for a week, Beth, and they include
you in their hall of fame.
Speaker 5 (01:05:02):
Well, Jim and I go way back.
Speaker 6 (01:05:03):
We go back to it.
Speaker 5 (01:05:04):
That's right, we go back to like two thousand and five.
Speaker 3 (01:05:07):
I proved the theory I'm not as smartest.
Speaker 4 (01:05:09):
Fifth grade Monday at seven o five, one of the
biggest announcements in the history of this station is going
to be made on this show. And so I'm going
to tell you something good on Monday as just as
much as Friday.
Speaker 5 (01:05:20):
We're all going to celebrate together. It's going to be
I mean, it has been a big week here and
we get to share it with all of you. Can
you make monies please on Monday? Oh, I should make
cookies just to celebrate the big announcement.
Speaker 6 (01:05:33):
It'll be great.
Speaker 5 (01:05:34):
And can I tell you something else really good, not
to deter from the big announcement, which again, set your calendars,
set your clocks, set your phone reminders, set your calendar,
your calendars on your phone so that you listen at
seven oh five on Monday, because again this is the
biggest of big announcements. But I do want to say
something else that's really good, as I love our listeners
so much. We've been our text line has been blowing
(01:05:54):
up about the fact that Thanksgiving comes at different times
every year. People are asking us to let us know
that Thanksgiving always is the fourth Thursday in November, regardless
of the date. So the young lady whose birthday was
last Thursday will always be on November twenty seventh, but
may not always be on Thursday, but thinks.
Speaker 4 (01:06:13):
I don't know what you're talking about. I have no
recollection of that.
Speaker 3 (01:06:16):
I just want you to know.
Speaker 4 (01:06:17):
Our programmed director just texted me and said, what was
it like back here in twenty twenty two?
Speaker 3 (01:06:21):
And he did a lapping Santa Claus?
Speaker 1 (01:06:23):
What was it like in twenty twenty two?
Speaker 3 (01:06:26):
Is that actually Mike as a Santa Claus?
Speaker 5 (01:06:27):
That is nic as a Santa Claus? Yes, guys, it
was different.
Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
The program director liked one of my jokes I've had
like ten thousand. That's the first one that ever got
a refore.
Speaker 5 (01:06:38):
Do you know what it was like? There was a
lot of testosterone in this room before in twenty twenty two,
I brought the estrogen.
Speaker 6 (01:06:45):
It's also did those partitions in the room they were?
Speaker 5 (01:06:48):
Yeah, there were there were There were clear separators in
the room that got taken away when I arrived. I
guess you were trying to get your own space bo
before Ike for the cootiet here.
Speaker 4 (01:06:57):
You gotta know who am I kidding when I talk
about how long I've been here and how long Zochie's
been here, Like I don't remember anything before twenty twenty two,
Like I don't know.
Speaker 5 (01:07:09):
Thanks, that's something good.
Speaker 3 (01:07:11):
Thanks thanks to those that was sweeping no longer.
Speaker 4 (01:07:14):
I'm just kidding, I don't remember last segment.
Speaker 3 (01:07:17):
To be quite honest with you, Gravy Cole, he was
a good one.
Speaker 4 (01:07:21):
So coming up Monday at seven o five, right here
on WBT, our general manager, our program director. I'm quite
sure we'll hear from both during the show on Monday.
Speaker 1 (01:07:29):
This is a big deal.
Speaker 5 (01:07:31):
Oh my gosh, it's so big, it's so exciting. I
cannot wait to share this with all of you.
Speaker 4 (01:07:37):
And they're both listening right now saying please end the
segment and don't let the cat out of the bag.
I'm not Monday seven o five. That might put it
on LinkedIn last man, that's where it's going to be,
right here on WBT.
Speaker 1 (01:07:48):
Right now. Traffic check Boomer von Cannon. Be a big
hug from Beth. That's Monday.
Speaker 3 (01:07:52):
Oh oh yeah, Oh it's Monday, Monday hugg Day.
Speaker 5 (01:07:55):
It's going to be a group hug guys on Monday.
Speaker 1 (01:07:58):
Beth Troutman hugs all of Charlotte.
Speaker 5 (01:08:01):
I would totally do that.
Speaker 3 (01:08:02):
I think we fund it a long time, but would
be a good fundraiser.
Speaker 5 (01:08:04):
Yeah, just hold as sign.
Speaker 6 (01:08:08):
At COVID again someone's about to be sick and then.
Speaker 3 (01:08:12):
We're just bruined. Like every It was like such a
beautiful sorry.
Speaker 5 (01:08:17):
Good morning, Hey Nancy.
Speaker 14 (01:08:20):
Enjoy your show.
Speaker 2 (01:08:21):
Thank you love the show.
Speaker 13 (01:08:22):
Long time listen over a decade.
Speaker 1 (01:08:25):
Consider you guys for a family.
Speaker 5 (01:08:27):
Oh, he says, you're very kind.
Speaker 13 (01:08:30):
There you go.
Speaker 4 (01:08:32):
This is good morning beat, Good morning, you just talk

Speaker 6 (01:09:03):
Last week?
Speaker 5 (01:09:04):
We were all off my Friday Thanksgiving.
Speaker 3 (01:09:06):
We could rememb if I just took it off. If
that was a company morning Jim, you guys still came
in though, right? Did Joe work thanks week?
Speaker 1 (01:09:15):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (01:09:15):
We walked out the whole day all here. I remember
remember Thanksgiving is not always on the same day.
Speaker 1 (01:09:23):
Trying to drive. That was on a Thursday.
Speaker 3 (01:09:25):
So what's One of my kids, in his early teens,
asked me when is New Year's Like it was like
this time in your when when is New Year's Day?
And I said, I think it's on a Thursday this year.
He goes, no, like what date? I go, Oh, you're January. First,
you're looking like right, right, right, of course it was serious.
Oh that's why I realized teenagers. Teenagers are people too.
Speaker 4 (01:09:46):
It's like the Ali g think about Christmas where he's
talking about, well, Jesus was born on the actual Christmas day.
Speaker 3 (01:09:57):
Odds, lou Garrett got Lou Garrett.
Speaker 6 (01:10:01):
Of all people.
Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
Soon, well, we.
Speaker 4 (01:10:06):
Are covering all the bases today, speaking of not bases,
but oceans.
Speaker 5 (01:10:12):
Speaking of k by the ocean, another second ruin. Guys,
listen to this. In the largest ever study of personalities,
researchers revealed that the secret to success starts with one
surprising word, plastics, packaging.
Speaker 1 (01:10:33):
Those are two of my best answers, ritual.
Speaker 3 (01:10:36):
I don't have a third one. Those are the two
best answers.
Speaker 5 (01:10:38):
Well, here's the answer in the actual study. So how
do you find the secret to your version of success?
It starts with the surprising word oceans serious one serious.
But but there is a a a addendum to this.
(01:11:00):
Ocean is actually an acronym, each letter standing for a
different trait from the five factor model of personalities, also
known as the Big five.
Speaker 4 (01:11:12):
You guys, realize, she just works, but it's another acronym.
She just worked acronym and addendum into it like one phrase, I.
Speaker 3 (01:11:20):
Feel like I met one of our symposiums.
Speaker 5 (01:11:23):
So here we go. The acronym ocean. If you want
to find success, A remember the word ocean, But I
also have to remember what it stands for should be.
So here's what you need to remember. Ocean OH is
for openness, openness to experience. How open are you to
(01:11:47):
trying new things? If you're open, you're going to find
success more easily. The C word conscientiousness. How structured, organized,
and committed are you to your work? BO and I
are felling at at e E extraversion? How you get energy,
(01:12:08):
whether from being alone with your thoughts, which is introversion,
or being with others extraversion?
Speaker 6 (01:12:14):
What's felling? That's said you're felling failing? What you said
you're felling at.
Speaker 5 (01:12:21):
E oh, we're failing failing.
Speaker 1 (01:12:25):
I'm hear it on the radio talking over the billy
ocean A.
Speaker 5 (01:12:30):
A stands for agreeableness. How you deal with others, whether
you strive for harmony or tend to voice your opinions
even if different from others. Your agreeableness will lead to success.
And finally, the end neuroticism. None of the above or
emotional stability, how strongly you tend to how strongly you
(01:12:51):
tend to focus on negative emotions, neuroticism ocean guys. It's
important to note that these two exist on a spectrum,
meaning you will likely lean toward one end of the
spectrum then the other. But you, as you can imagine,
personality is complex and the study of personalities isn't an
exact science. But if you focus on the positive end
(01:13:14):
of the ocean acronym, you will find success.
Speaker 3 (01:13:19):
I need to recut that scene from City Slickers now
tailed timer, what's life all about? It's all about one thing?
Speaker 5 (01:13:25):
What's that?
Speaker 4 (01:13:27):
Oceans?
Speaker 5 (01:13:29):
What is the line? What is it all about?
Speaker 3 (01:13:30):
Wendy, Because that's what you have to find out?
Speaker 1 (01:13:32):
What is what is it all about?
Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
You have to find out.
Speaker 5 (01:13:35):
That's why you have to listen to this show. We
give you the answer. Life is all about Ocean.
Speaker 1 (01:13:41):
Monday. That will tell you the answer that question.
Speaker 5 (01:13:44):
Oh, a gigantic ocean as the ocean a story as
big as there not a fishtail. Yes, but if you
spend time near the ocean, that's appointment listening you you
probably are better at the ocean acronym.
Speaker 4 (01:13:59):
No hyperbole anywhere in this by the way, No, like
we probably haven't made it big enough.
Speaker 5 (01:14:04):
No ocean and ocean of announcements.
Speaker 3 (01:14:07):
A bigger than episode four of Stranger Things.
Speaker 4 (01:14:10):
I think this is on par with the final episode
of Stranger Things.
Speaker 3 (01:14:15):
What is this our studying conclusion on Monday to this program?
Speaker 5 (01:14:18):
Guys, this could be as big as the New Heart
finale where he woke up and it was all a dream.
Speaker 1 (01:14:23):
Don't say that it's not a dream.
Speaker 5 (01:14:25):
No, no, but it was a big finale or when
or when the who shot Dallas or whoever Dallas j R?
Speaker 3 (01:14:35):
Oh my god, you know shot the whole studio.
Speaker 5 (01:14:39):
Well, and then that she woke up and Pam or
Pam Ellen or Sue Ellen or whatever her name was,
she dreaming full time.
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
That's what it's all about, that one thing, all right?
Speaker 5 (01:14:51):
Do you guys hate it when I bring you information
that might might be useful but doesn't end up?
Speaker 1 (01:14:55):
Really, when have you ever done that?
Speaker 3 (01:15:01):
That's the end? The negative was again negative puism.
Speaker 5 (01:15:10):
How strongly you tend toward negative emotions?
Speaker 3 (01:15:13):
You're the you put the end an ocean.
Speaker 4 (01:15:17):
When we come back, this guy who's calling out Beth,
she'll do it again, he'll do it again because it's
the Friday News Quiz.
Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Who won last.
Speaker 3 (01:15:25):
Week time champ because we had Jeff actingson that's right.
We had Jeff last time.
Speaker 1 (01:15:31):
That's right. So now I have some interesting questions?
Speaker 3 (01:15:34):
Did all sports questions last time?
Speaker 1 (01:15:36):
Friday News Quiz coming up?
Speaker 4 (01:15:38):
John Hancock our final hour today, a couple of special
guests during that final hour, and of course tonight is
Hancock's Bikes for Kids thirty second annual right here at
one Julian Price Place.
Speaker 5 (01:15:49):
I have to give props to our listeners where props
is due. And I don't know how we did not
come up with this joke, but Alice Cooper Billy said, Wow,
that's deep like the ocean.
Speaker 3 (01:16:02):
Oh good one.
Speaker 6 (01:16:06):
Yeah, no, wonder we didn't come up with it. It
took a second to lay too.
Speaker 3 (01:16:10):
He built it up so big and I was gonna,
I mean solid, but it was pretty.
Speaker 1 (01:16:17):
Solid like I think you and Billy both looked bad on.
Speaker 6 (01:16:22):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (01:16:22):
Wow, that's the that's the game show host taking shots
before the content.
Speaker 2 (01:16:28):
Good morning Dat, this is good morning Beaty.
Speaker 1 (01:16:34):
You know what that means. Friday News Quiz time.
Speaker 4 (01:16:37):
Yes, there and back in his rightful spot after Jeff Atkinson,
the ablely filled in for a few weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:16:42):
It's Mark Garrison, Yes.
Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
Sir, ready to go on.
Speaker 1 (01:16:45):
Our first question here has a little intro.
Speaker 9 (01:16:49):
I was taking you bail all about a Saturday night.
Speaker 1 (01:16:53):
Today is National Bathtub Party Day. What Yeah, you know.
Speaker 11 (01:17:01):
What.
Speaker 1 (01:17:02):
You are encouraged to linger in the tub instead of
taking a shower. That's what it says. So what percentage
of Americans prefer a bath over a shower? Thirteen percent,
seventeen percent or twenty two percent.
Speaker 6 (01:17:19):
We go with seventeen percent.
Speaker 1 (01:17:21):
I'm with Bernie seventeen twenty two.
Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
I think it's unpopular to say thirteen.
Speaker 5 (01:17:25):
I'm going to say thirteen as well.
Speaker 1 (01:17:27):
And the thirteen correct thirteen percent die.
Speaker 6 (01:17:31):
Boomers Womer was there.
Speaker 3 (01:17:33):
Oh look I'm right about the jurneys washed off my body,
Boomer said.
Speaker 6 (01:17:36):
Thirteener said thirteen.
Speaker 1 (01:17:37):
Yeah, give me a group hug in the tub. Yeah,
it is bathtub party tub time machine. Come on, that's soper.
You're just glad to see. Let's see here which country
Which country bathes and showers the least? Italy, Paraguay or China.
Speaker 6 (01:18:02):
Italy, England, the Italy.
Speaker 1 (01:18:05):
They have bad teeth Steve.
Speaker 6 (01:18:07):
I'll say, Steve, if you're telling, how do you feel
about tomatoes and catchum.
Speaker 1 (01:18:12):
Paraguay?
Speaker 3 (01:18:13):
Italy?
Speaker 1 (01:18:14):
I'll go with Italy.
Speaker 5 (01:18:15):
I'll go with China.
Speaker 6 (01:18:17):
China.
Speaker 1 (01:18:19):
More than half of Chinese only bathe or shower weekly a.
Speaker 3 (01:18:26):
Weekly.
Speaker 4 (01:18:30):
I'm still recovering from an earlier moment.
Speaker 1 (01:18:34):
New police chief of Stella Patterson to be sworn in today.
True or false. It's the second time she's been sworn
in for the job. True or false. I think that's true.
Speaker 4 (01:18:45):
Yeah, I think it's true.
Speaker 5 (01:18:46):
Well, that's true too.
Speaker 3 (01:18:48):
I'm about go falls for the points.
Speaker 1 (01:18:50):
It's true. She was privately sworn in on Monday. Would
say public swearing.
Speaker 4 (01:18:57):
If I got the false, I think that happens more
off then we realized, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:19:01):
Yeah, that's right now. The chief's husband, Lances, we've been reporting,
got a check from the city because he sued the
fire department, claiming he was discriminated against. How much did
Lance put in his pocket?
Speaker 3 (01:19:13):
In his pants?
Speaker 9 (01:19:14):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:19:14):
How much did Lance put in his pants?
Speaker 14 (01:19:16):
I like that?
Speaker 1 (01:19:20):
Ninety seventy five thousand or forty thousand? How much did
he put in his pants?
Speaker 3 (01:19:27):
Where is he happy to see him? Nine ninety nine?
Everyone knows it's ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:19:33):
Nine, and you're all it was forty. The rest was
given to his attorneys forty. I forgot the factor that oh,
Mark and me for I didn't write the check because
you're being Mark. Let's see what do we have here?
(01:19:54):
Tru or false. Air Bus had to perform an emergency
software up raide this week on its big jets because
of hackers. True or false False False, Yeah, I don't
think it was hackers.
Speaker 6 (01:20:09):
They did, but the reason is false.
Speaker 1 (01:20:10):
False to drink a bunch of faulties because of both,
got that one right there. False because of the sun
interfering with the jets guidance systems. Interesting, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (01:20:23):
We've had some really bad solar flares as of late.
Speaker 2 (01:20:26):
Guys, Uh huh.
Speaker 4 (01:20:28):
Just so you know, Brad Panovich over here for sharing
the astrologist Beth Soli flares.
Speaker 1 (01:20:33):
That's such a smart girl. A new state law went
into effect this week here in the tar Heel State
that restricts what substance that some people use to get
drunk some cough syrups, embalming fluid or energy drinks with
th HC.
Speaker 6 (01:20:55):
I'll go with the energy drink embalming fluid. That's a
I want to go with one with that scissor.
Speaker 1 (01:21:02):
He just wants to say it. Yeah, I'm going to
go see.
Speaker 5 (01:21:05):
I'm actually going with embalming fluid.
Speaker 6 (01:21:07):
Oh, because it is?
Speaker 1 (01:21:09):
Is that everybody? It's embalming fluid? Who I want to
drink that stuff? Is what I want to know.
Speaker 3 (01:21:15):
I'll kill you.
Speaker 5 (01:21:16):
When I've read that, I thought, what I.
Speaker 3 (01:21:19):
Know, it's em bobbing flocke.
Speaker 1 (01:21:20):
It'll kill you, It'll embalm me.
Speaker 3 (01:21:22):
You see that out of this.
Speaker 1 (01:21:26):
Well, we talked about it yesterday. I Roy Koopa filed
to run for the Senate this week. All right, calm down, Burg,
It's not that funny. How much is the filing fee
to run for the US Senate in North Carolina? How
much is the filing fee or run for senate? Is
it three thy two hundred and fifteen, two thousand, six
(01:21:46):
hundred and fifty or one thousand, seven hundred and forty.
Speaker 3 (01:21:49):
Wow, I'm not going to read all that very interesting
twenty six fifty.
Speaker 5 (01:21:54):
Yeah, I think it's I think it's two thousand, six
hundred and fifty. I think it's a percentage of the salary.
Speaker 6 (01:21:59):
I'll go with C just to be did.
Speaker 3 (01:22:01):
I'll say whatever the three thousand, two hundred and one,
I'm gonna go with A just to be different.
Speaker 1 (01:22:05):
Well, sugar Bath is right. It is a percentage of
the salary and it's one thousand seven and forty. Wait,
I thought that's what was that?
Speaker 4 (01:22:12):
Not A?
Speaker 3 (01:22:13):
I was, Oh darn, that was a three thousand one.
Speaker 1 (01:22:17):
He didn't go in order, So now we learn he
doesn't know his ABC's uh in Wilmington. Something interesting from
the Sheriff's office. The Sheriff's office in Wilmington is selling
what to raise money to help families and need Boston
Butts lunch in the county jail are a discount on
(01:22:37):
concealed carry classes.
Speaker 6 (01:22:39):
I need Nick Craig on this one.
Speaker 3 (01:22:40):
I hope it's lunch at the county jail.
Speaker 6 (01:22:43):
That would be a great when we go with concealed
carry classes, I'll go to concealed. Yeah, concealed.
Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
I'm gonna go with Boston Boston butts.
Speaker 1 (01:22:51):
Clearly butts. It's birth of Boston Butts.
Speaker 6 (01:22:54):
Oh yeah, I thought you just want to say butts.
Speaker 3 (01:22:58):
That's actually why they say that.
Speaker 4 (01:23:03):
Lets it's not even close. Like you can stop it
now if you want to.
Speaker 1 (01:23:06):
I was gonna say, do we have a.
Speaker 13 (01:23:12):
Wow?
Speaker 1 (01:23:13):
Nobody finally won it?
Speaker 6 (01:23:14):
Oh, it has been a minute bath, it has it
has been.
Speaker 1 (01:23:18):
She's so just smart. Girl has been a bit. What
is the margin?
Speaker 4 (01:23:21):
What's the margin there, Steve?
Speaker 1 (01:23:23):
Uh, she's right now.
Speaker 3 (01:23:24):
She's got Bernie by two, she's got me and Jim
by three.
Speaker 6 (01:23:28):
She's gonna came in second place.
Speaker 1 (01:23:30):
It's over, so happy National Bathtub Party Day.
Speaker 5 (01:23:34):
Ben to go have a party.
Speaker 3 (01:23:35):
It's Bethtub Party, best party.
Speaker 5 (01:23:38):
Party, Bethtub Party, except I don't like baths or tubs, yeah,
or hot parties.
Speaker 6 (01:23:45):
Wait here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:23:48):
I was taking the bath from Talk eleven and ninety
nine three double Deep.
Speaker 9 (01:24:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:24:00):
The energy in this place is just amazing, pure energy.
Speaker 2 (01:24:03):
This is good Morning Beatsy with Bo Thompson and Beth
Trout with.
Speaker 5 (01:24:08):
What I'm talking about is the pulse of the collection.
Speaker 6 (01:24:10):
Come a little percussion.
Speaker 3 (01:24:22):
World, we see.
Speaker 5 (01:24:46):
God.
Speaker 4 (01:24:53):
Well, it's not really Christmas and the holiday season on
this radio station to me, at least until we Aretha Franklin.
The first time John Hancock is in the studio after Thanksgiving.
Speaker 1 (01:25:09):
Which is always on the twenty tours.
Speaker 6 (01:25:10):
I understand.
Speaker 1 (01:25:13):
I'm never going to live that down.
Speaker 5 (01:25:16):
Well, played, John Hancock, thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:25:19):
This is how I find out how long people have
been listening. Well, welcome to Charlotte's most beloved on the
big well of the biggest day of the year when
it comes to helping kids in this community. It's Hancock's
Bikes for Kids. Tonight starts at five o'clock, thirty second annual.
John Hancock has arrived and he's not the only one. Well,
I was gonna say, how do we kick this off
(01:25:41):
every year?
Speaker 11 (01:25:42):
For I've been retired for six years and we did
this for gosh, I don't know ten years before that.
So it's a tradition to start the bike, drive off
and talk to the Charlotte Knights.
Speaker 4 (01:25:57):
Dan Rakowski with the Charlotte Knights. This is another part
of today's tradition that this has to happen before the
next thing can happen.
Speaker 1 (01:26:04):
The Charlotte Knights.
Speaker 4 (01:26:05):
Doug and Dan are here with the first bikes officially
for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (01:26:10):
Well, first of all, good to see everybody.
Speaker 6 (01:26:12):
Absolutely holidays.
Speaker 18 (01:26:14):
It is a tradition. We're now at twelve years that
we've doing. I had it up John that we moved
uptown Charlotte. We decided to do kick off your bike
drive and we bring in thirty one bikes, and so
we're going to start it today and bring them on in.
Speaker 11 (01:26:27):
Yeah, well that's what I say. It's kind of become
the kickoff of the bike drive. They'll be here technically
before most of us.
Speaker 18 (01:26:37):
Well, you know, it's something that we started. It will
be I guess, totaling up over three hundred and fifty
bikes over the course of the term. And you know,
I just thought it's just a really a special time
you mentioned it. I think back of when I was
listening on the radio and you were talking about this
bike drive and we're in Charlotte and we're getting this
new ballpark, and I said, I want to I want
(01:26:57):
to be a part of this.
Speaker 6 (01:26:58):
And we did it.
Speaker 18 (01:26:59):
We went out, we bought thirty one because we wanted
to be the thirty first most successful professional baseball team
in the country.
Speaker 1 (01:27:05):
That's always the coolest line because it's true.
Speaker 18 (01:27:08):
Well, we tried to and you know, work at it,
and that's how we got the thirty one bikes. That
was the number.
Speaker 6 (01:27:13):
And we've done it every year.
Speaker 4 (01:27:14):
Yeah, and you're right in the middle of what has
become just a huge Charlotte tradition as well.
Speaker 3 (01:27:20):
The Light the Nights.
Speaker 4 (01:27:23):
Tell us about everything that's going on, because every time
I look at the pictures, I talked to my buddy Matt,
the boys over there. You've added something to it, but
you've got Light the Nights going on right now for
the holiday season.
Speaker 18 (01:27:33):
We started right before Thanksgiving, had a super weekend right
after what is it the November twenty fourth? Is that Thanksgiving?
Speaker 1 (01:27:39):
Don't ask me.
Speaker 18 (01:27:41):
I was listening as well, yes, thank you, and then
going off and I was going to bring a bike
in and ride a bike in. I think you said
that at the eight o'clock.
Speaker 5 (01:27:49):
Yeah, you're going to be cycling through, but they were all.
Speaker 18 (01:27:51):
Boxed up at the ballpark so I couldn't bring the bike.
But yes, we started Light the Nights. We started this
is really early on during COVID when nobody was going
anywhere doing anything, and it's turned into now you're six
and three years where we put the skating rink on
the field, tube slide on the field last week and
we had over ten thousand people come through. Just really
been spectacular, and we just keep adding to it. Now
(01:28:13):
we're getting a little landlocked, so there's not a lot
of things that we can do. But yeah, we tear
up our baseball field every year and put skating rink
down and it's just been incredible. And we saw our
first responders we were out there. We walked them about
one thousand on the other night free of charge to
thank them for their service. And just a lot of
fun to watch it. You need to come down very They.
Speaker 11 (01:28:34):
Show the Elf movie with food and all sorts of
stuff on December the seventeenth. That's just one of the
one of the elements that you've added to the repergeoire.
Speaker 18 (01:28:43):
Yeah, we just keep adding stuff, you know, but we've
got you know, we've got youth hockey. We play in
the morning. We had six college hockey games. I said,
I wish I was a football field. We had Alabama
play Georgia, Auburn, NC State. You know, there's and these
are just club hockey games, Appstate and Charlotte. We had
three thousand people show up for club hockey. It's just
(01:29:06):
incredible the feel of being out outside.
Speaker 19 (01:29:10):
And you know, the one off if you seen some
of the aerial shots that they've done where you they
look down on the field and you see all of
this this big slide and the skating rink and it's
it's in the lights, and I it's fantastic.
Speaker 5 (01:29:23):
It makes it feel like the holidays. That what you
all do with light the nights and the bike drive,
that's when you know that it starts feeling like Christmas
in the Queen City.
Speaker 18 (01:29:32):
You're exactly right, And so you know, my little plug
is make sure you support this. John has been doing
this for years and it's so nice to come out
there and see people just pulling their cars up and
dropping bikes off, whether it's one or five. And I
know you've got some groups of guys that each year
come out and really support it and bring a whole
bunch of bikes.
Speaker 1 (01:29:50):
But you know, it's the backbone of this thing.
Speaker 11 (01:29:53):
And then we couldn't do it without the guys that
bring the big truck and the family that gets the
neighborhood together and one and so forth.
Speaker 1 (01:30:01):
But the backbone of this.
Speaker 11 (01:30:02):
Thing is still the guy who are the family or
the people or the lady who drives with one or two.
I mean, that's really where we get more than half
of our bikes. So don't don't let the big truck overshadow.
Speaker 1 (01:30:18):
Your little truck.
Speaker 4 (01:30:19):
Yeah, every one of these bikes is going to go
to a kid in the area that wouldn't get one otherwise.
And John always makes a point to say, and I
think it can't be said enough. You know, we would
appreciate used bikes, but that's not the point here used
by You want a kid to have a brand new bike,
because that's the experience that every kid deserves to have.
Speaker 11 (01:30:40):
Yeah, these I've explained it before, and some people buy
it and some people don't. But I want new bikes
because these kids have most of them have never had
anything new in their life. They get hand me down shoes,
they get hand me down clothes, they get hand me
down everything. I want them don't cut the tags off
the bike, So I want them to get a brand
(01:31:01):
new bike with the tags still.
Speaker 6 (01:31:03):
Hanging on them.
Speaker 11 (01:31:06):
Just a little thing that we've been able to do
now for thirty some odd years. And there are organizations
out there who refurbish bikes and do the same thing
we do and make sure kids are taken care of,
and I salute them as much as anybody in town.
But it's just a little phobia of mine.
Speaker 1 (01:31:30):
I want these.
Speaker 11 (01:31:31):
I want our kids to get brand new bikes.
Speaker 4 (01:31:34):
Well, so it's officially begun. Hancock's here on a Friday
morning night's coo does. Dan Rakowski is in the house
with the first thirty one bikes to add to the
totals tonight, I love you so much. And Light the
Nights is going on through January fourth, so this is
great time to be in the Charlotte area. Come by
and see us tonight at one Julian Price Place. Make
(01:31:56):
sure you go see the Charlotte Knights at the ballparks
time over the holiday season.
Speaker 1 (01:32:01):
And you know, that's what it's all about.
Speaker 5 (01:32:03):
And can I just say, we just got a text
message from one of our listeners who took a picture
of a big truck with a trailer behind it that
has like five or six bikes on it, and he texted,
it looks like somebody's on their way.
Speaker 6 (01:32:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:32:14):
No, Well, we always get surprises, and then we always
get our you know, the people that have been doing
big things.
Speaker 6 (01:32:20):
For us for years.
Speaker 4 (01:32:21):
I just love it.
Speaker 5 (01:32:22):
This is one of my favorite nights to broadcast on
WBT because you get to see so many listeners. But
I love watching the families come through and watching kids
get so excited about giving to other kids.
Speaker 1 (01:32:34):
We started.
Speaker 4 (01:32:34):
We started the broadcast on the on the radio station
several years back.
Speaker 1 (01:32:39):
And the reason is.
Speaker 4 (01:32:42):
John's not hosting tonight because John. This frees John up
to go be John and to walk up to cars
and greet people and say hello. And so when you
come out, our whole team will be here. And I
you know, you never know who's going to walk up.
Scott Avid walked up last year just for doing our show.
And he walks up and brought a bike. A Yes,
the Avitt Brothers. You know, Boomer von Cannon is there.
(01:33:03):
That's the biggest name of all. Everybody wants to know
where Boomer is. But five o'clock tonight we'll kick it
off on the air. We'll broadcast the whole thing through
nine o'clock. Hancock will be here, Santa everybody, so dan
On behalf of all of us. Thank you for the
partnership we have with the Charlotte Knights for so many years,
and thanks for you know, properly starting us off every year.
Speaker 18 (01:33:24):
Thanks so much, we appreciate it.
Speaker 11 (01:33:25):
And thank you for the kick butt calendar. These calendars
are great. He brought his calendars and that they're man,
they're super.
Speaker 6 (01:33:32):
Yes, that's the time of giving.
Speaker 18 (01:33:33):
So I'm giving you a calendar.
Speaker 6 (01:33:34):
Yeah, oh, I love this.
Speaker 4 (01:33:36):
Thanksgiving Day is Thursday November twenty six for twenty six,
it's on the twenty sixth of November next year.
Speaker 5 (01:33:45):
Circle that in highlight, so it won't be Harlowe's birthday.
Speaker 4 (01:33:49):
See see, Dan, not only did you listen to the show,
You're bringing me tools to correct things.
Speaker 3 (01:33:54):
Next, guy, I just keep giving.
Speaker 5 (01:33:56):
You are a giver, give, you are a giver. We
love it when you stop.
Speaker 4 (01:34:00):
Well, Doug, Dan, Homer, the folks, Matt, of everybody we
know over at the Charlotte Nights. We appreciate you guys
so much.
Speaker 18 (01:34:06):
Thank you, guys, really appreciate it. Happy Holidays to everyone,
Merry Christmas to you, Christmas.
Speaker 4 (01:34:10):
We love you.
Speaker 2 (01:34:11):
This is Good Morning Beatty with Bo Thompson and Beth
troud Man.
Speaker 6 (01:34:16):
And now when Sid.
Speaker 10 (01:34:19):
Sees his train, there'll be some homemade chipmunk jerkey for
his name, and every hungry.
Speaker 5 (01:34:31):
Child is gonna spy.
Speaker 4 (01:34:43):
See it's all about traditions here rushing on boy, really,
Miss Handcock, Don't I make you feel at home for
the holidays when you stop by here?
Speaker 1 (01:34:55):
Huh?
Speaker 4 (01:34:55):
Don't I make you feel like at home for the
holidays when you stop by here.
Speaker 11 (01:34:58):
Yeah, well, I mean I I remember playing all of
that stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:35:01):
See I bring it back for you because to me,
I mean, that was part of my There's so many
things you used to play on your show that like
I had to hear them before. It was really the
holiday season for me. And now we've checked off two
boxes today today.
Speaker 11 (01:35:16):
Well, that's what happens when you come by and never leave.
I remember the last week I was on the air.
I'll never forget this lady who called up and said, John,
how could we miss you if you won't go away?
Speaker 1 (01:35:31):
Oh? No, it's always great to see you.
Speaker 4 (01:35:33):
And today there's sort of an energy pulsing through the
station on this day because you know, right down the
hall at WBTV Channel three, Jamie Boll and the guys
at the TV station, they help us out tonight he'll
be out there. He is one of the hardest working
guys every year taking bikes out of cars and trucks,
and we always appreciate that.
Speaker 11 (01:35:53):
Greg Simpson shot a really nice piece I have it
up on my Facebook page, but a really nice piece
that aired yesterday during their seven o'clock newscast. I think
it may have aired elsewhere as well, but just talking
to me and and pictures of the event in the
years past, and anyway, Greg Good does a great job
(01:36:15):
every year with some sort of feature, and he did
it last night. So the one that he did that's
posted on my Facebook page is superb.
Speaker 5 (01:36:25):
What's it like to be you on this day?
Speaker 1 (01:36:31):
Well, I don't know right now.
Speaker 11 (01:36:32):
I'm thankful because I think, I believe it or not,
we dodged a bullet because for the last three days
I thought we were going to be standing in a
driving rainstorm for the full because I was looking at
at things that were saying, you know, the rain will
probably start about four and end about ten, and I thought, oh, perfect.
(01:36:52):
But now it appears that all.
Speaker 1 (01:36:53):
This weather is going to blow out.
Speaker 3 (01:36:55):
Yeah, and it's going to be cold, but.
Speaker 6 (01:36:58):
We've we always have expected that.
Speaker 4 (01:37:01):
Yeah, it's going to be forty two as we start
tonight according to my latest forecast that I've got here,
and we're gonna go till eight pm, so it's going
to be around forty thirty nine forty degrees. So, as
I've been saying all week, cold, yes, wintry, yes, We've
seen everything over the years, and this is actually better
than some of the scenarios we've seen. We've done it
(01:37:22):
in the pouring rain before and that's not going to
be the case tonight. So at any rate, if you
are thinking, man, it's cold, I don't want to go out,
come out. You don't have to get out of your car.
We'll we'll come to your car. There's there's drive up service.
We'll take the bikes and you know, say hello, Hancock,
come shake your hand. I might even or Beth might
even come stick a microphone in your face.
Speaker 5 (01:37:43):
But live on the air with us.
Speaker 4 (01:37:46):
We have a good time, and then the mica will
be alive. I always make a point to say hello, you're.
Speaker 5 (01:37:53):
On the radio right, just to make sure they don't,
you know, let any bad words slip, because you.
Speaker 4 (01:37:58):
Never know you walk up these days, you know, people
can you know, we all carry these smartphones and they
can do all these things, but they can't blast out
over fifty thousand watts. So I always make sure that
you know. But then if you want, and I can
tell by the look on their face, sometimes they say
here's the bike, good night, and then I move on
to the next person. And then sometimes we have some
really cool conversations. That's part of the live broadcast feel
(01:38:22):
of tonight that makes it makes it fun.
Speaker 3 (01:38:24):
I don't want to be on the f and radio.
Speaker 4 (01:38:29):
Back to you, Beth, and the whole team will be
out here tonight. We'll be kicking it off with Winter
Bull and Hancock at five o'clock and by that I
mean myself and Beth Troutman, and then we'll have Vince
and Pete and Jensen and everybody. So TJ will be
out here tonight and we'll be able to close it
out with Hancock. And we talked earlier in the show.
(01:38:51):
I didn't tell you this, John, but earlier in the
show we talked to Brent and Hailey Sanders and they're
ready to go for tonight too.
Speaker 6 (01:39:00):
Yeah, well they always are.
Speaker 11 (01:39:03):
They picked up Sharon's legacy and uh and ran with it,
and they work their tails off. There's a retail store
they get, they get somebody will donate a storefront to
them every year, and this one happens to be the
same one they had last year at the McMullan Creek Market.
And if you'll go to their website kids first at
(01:39:25):
the Carolinas dot com, you'll find the hours in the
days they're open Tuesday through Saturday or something like that,
and there Sunday hours, but you can drop bikes off there,
toys off their donations. Make you checks out to kids first.
You know, we bikes were focused on bikes, but they
have lots of needs and lots of kids and lots
(01:39:48):
of people to take care of. So if you can't
make it tonight, make it a point to drop by
their store at McMullen Creek Market and and support the
cause in general.
Speaker 5 (01:39:59):
Yeah, they said that they need things like bed sheets,
especially for kids' beds. They need things like coats, so
extra like winter clothes, gloves, things like that for folks
who maybe don't have the funds to give bikes.
Speaker 11 (01:40:13):
They're back in the corner, just to the right of
that Walmart grocery store and not far from Burlington Coat Factory,
back where the original Wolfman Pizza used to be and
where Hembas used to be. That's where they are, McMullen
Creek Market, back in the corner, and.
Speaker 4 (01:40:32):
We'll give you all this information again before we leave.
You can also go to Kids First of the Carolinas
dot org for more information on the pop up locations
for kids First, this is good morning, Beaty Big Weekend

Speaker 2 (01:41:45):

your hand, but I won't know your name.
Speaker 4 (01:41:57):
The joke in your language, don't come now the same
times when I'm down it.
Speaker 2 (01:42:05):

Speaker 1 (01:42:21):

Speaker 11 (01:44:04):
Big Weekend presented by Watson Insurance Agency, protecting what's important
since nineteen thirty four.
Speaker 5 (01:44:11):
We had a fun little conversation off the air momentarily
just a moment ago, and I looked at John and
I said, you ever just walk in here and look
at us and think how did she get this job?
And he said, without missing a beat, he said, no,
it's just you being you.
Speaker 1 (01:44:28):
It's true.
Speaker 11 (01:44:29):
And then the other part is you know, a minimum wage,
you got what you are, You get what you get,
You get what you get, you get what you get.
Speaker 6 (01:44:38):
It was between you and a Saint Bernard exactly.
Speaker 5 (01:44:42):
And I'll wear that little thing of bourbon around my
neck if you need me to. Hey, the bucket a
bourbon and that bear I think so the rescue was
both drowel. So it was kind of you all looked
at me like I was crazy.
Speaker 3 (01:45:00):
By the way.
Speaker 4 (01:45:00):
We were talking about wbtv's involvement tonight, Jamie Ball and
our friends down there, and we've had so many friends
over the years, al Conklin, you know, still dates back
there a long time. You may remember Natalie Dick who
was a reporter there for many, many years, great reporter.
She reached out to me this week and said, Hey,
do you think that you could get this as part
(01:45:21):
of the big weekend mentions? And I said, yes, absolutely,
that's kind of the It's just like a catch all
for everything that you might be wanting to do this weekend.
So Suffolk Punch and Grievous Angels have announced the Holiday
Jam fundraiser coming up on December seventh. It's going to

this holiday jam going on this weekend. On the seventh,
from two to seven pm. One hundred percent of the
proceeds go to a Second Harvest.
Speaker 6 (01:46:21):
So there you go.
Speaker 1 (01:46:23):
There's a lot of.
Speaker 11 (01:46:24):
Great causes going on around Christmas. It's not a competition,
it's a it's a do do one of them do
something for I mean, you know, yes, I would love
to see you drive through tonight, but there's a thousand
causes out there that are helping people that need help
at Christmas.
Speaker 6 (01:46:42):
Get involved with something that's good.
Speaker 5 (01:46:45):
Those are great words, and we do hope that that
you will get involved tonight and come see us and
and and donate a bike to a kid. We've talked
about this. We haven't talked about it so much this year, John,
but I know that in the past what it means
for a young person to get a bicycle. It's that
first taste of freedom, that first taste of feeling like
you can do something on your own, and it's your
(01:47:07):
first means of transportation. So many of us have wonderful
memories of our very first bicycle.
Speaker 11 (01:47:12):
Well we've actually in the asked a few years our
bike's still pertinent with technology and all of that other stuff,
And then answer is absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:47:22):
Yeah, and it is.
Speaker 2 (01:47:24):
It is sure.
Speaker 1 (01:47:24):
It's the first.
Speaker 11 (01:47:25):
It's the first time that you can jump on something
two wheels. And as I kiddingly like to say and
get away from Mom, I mean.
Speaker 5 (01:47:35):
We we spent our entire youth on our bikes.
Speaker 1 (01:47:39):
I can I can tell you how it sounded for me.
Speaker 4 (01:47:41):
Yeah, because I used to take my tape recorder and
my duct tape and I attached it to the handlebars
and I started riding and I played this m HM
heading down the street, gotta go pick up John Cooper.
When I was a kid, I thought they were saying,
(01:48:02):
we're going on control. They were saying on the TV show,
We're going on patrol. But I said, we're going on control.
And I got on my bike, my blue Shwin with
the banana seat and played this song going down the Street,
and all of Charlotte says, well, of course you did.
Speaker 11 (01:48:19):
And I remember we used to take clothes pins and
take the Mickey Mantle rookie cards and put them into spokes.
Speaker 4 (01:48:28):
When I was a kid, if we ran out of
baseball cards, we just use a garbage pail kids cards.
Speaker 1 (01:48:32):
Oh remember those?
Speaker 2 (01:48:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:48:33):
Of course, all right, it with beanie babies.
Speaker 4 (01:48:37):
But yeah, I didn't work near flying right, Yeah, I said,
when we ran out of baseball cards, didn't buy the
garbage pail Kids First. Sharon Sanders, Okay, everybody's starting to
gather around. Talk to me about what's going through your
mind tonight as you've watched this.
Speaker 20 (01:48:58):
Overwhelming appreciative helping a lot of kids.
Speaker 4 (01:49:04):
Start into The director, the founder of Kids First, she's
the one, she's, you know, the brainchild behind all this.
Speaker 1 (01:49:09):
But you have so many people here tonight that have
made this possible. Talk about that.
Speaker 6 (01:49:15):
Talk about the.
Speaker 20 (01:49:16):
Volunteers, j and Sanna and Debbie and Jeff and Ed
and Scott and Sandy all. We have a group of
volunteers that we put together this year like an executive committee,
that have worked their tails off. Eighteen people that have
come together to make this event happen. They've all done something.
Speaker 1 (01:49:35):
We just got the number tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:49:37):
I always make a point on our broadcast right before
the Bike Drive each year to play some Sharon Sanders
audio because I always want people to remember her spirit
and her essence and her you know, the reason this
is all going on is because they had an idea
all those years ago and they joined forces with John.
And by Sharon, I mean Wendy Toinetty was her part
(01:50:00):
her way back in the day when they had the
Shelter Medical Clinic and they came to John with a
you know, they had an issue. They were trying to
get these kids taken care of. And then it turned
in after all these years into kids first of the Carolinas,
and now we do the bike Drive on Friday nights.
And we were talking off the air here. The event
itself has evolved over the years, as anything does. But
(01:50:24):
when we have Brent and Haley tonight, Brent is her
husband and Haley is Sharon's daughter. They've taken the mantle
for this and carried it on and done a fantastic job.
But you know, the further we get away from it,
John and her passing away Sharon several years ago.
Speaker 1 (01:50:40):
People don't know that voice anymore what it sounds like.
Speaker 4 (01:50:43):
And I always make a point to play it on
this day because I know she's watching down on all
of us and is so happy that her lifelong mission
is being carried on. Well, we haven't mentioned dead Billick today,
but she.
Speaker 1 (01:50:57):
Did right there. Did you hear her?
Speaker 4 (01:50:59):
She meant ed And just so you know, we had
ed n yesterday for a segment to talk about everything
he's doing tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:51:06):
So you're exactly right.
Speaker 11 (01:51:07):
This is really the Ed Billick Bike Drive because I
show up now, it's the Status and WT and Mike Schaeffer,
our program director, and LaToya and all the people that
are involved with Urban.
Speaker 6 (01:51:21):
One and so on and so forth.
Speaker 11 (01:51:22):
I mean, they do all the legwork in the arranging
and this, that and the other, and there's a lot
of people, Watson Insurance and Garage Door Doctor. I told
the story last time about Garage Door Doctor is actually
under new ownership from when I was here doing commercials
for them. But after they sold, Garage Door Doctor said no, no,
(01:51:44):
we're still in. We want to And I met him
last year and he's just the nicest guy in the world. Oh, Yeah,
he was lovely, and so it's just there's just a
lot of consistency. We'll run into a lot of people
tonight that have been doing this. For our limbo driver Steve.
He also goes by the name is Steph and he'll
(01:52:06):
drive through tonight and he's been doing this for probably
thirty years himself.
Speaker 4 (01:52:11):
I have it on good authority that the Boyd family
will be represented tonight.
Speaker 1 (01:52:16):
I e ty Boid.
Speaker 4 (01:52:18):
I've been trading messages with Robert, with Robert Boyd yes
and I think we're going to maybe see a cameo
by him. So that's a cool thing that the Boyd
family's involved in this with all the years in the
station and so yeah, a lot of people will be
back here at one Julian Price Place tonight for a
great cost.
Speaker 6 (01:52:36):
Yeah, it'd be fun.
Speaker 11 (01:52:37):
And like I say, we got a break on the weather.
I don't think we're going to be standing in rain.
Is it going to be cold, yes, but I don't
think that we're going to be standing in four hours
of rain.
Speaker 3 (01:52:47):
And that's what I thought three days ago.
Speaker 5 (01:52:49):
Put on all the layers and we're going to have
ourselves the ball.
Speaker 11 (01:52:52):
So I was kidding with Rachel. I think it is
at a WBTV the other day, I walked into the
weather Center and I said, you know, you guys could
work a little bit harder for us on this Friday
night thing, because this four hours of rain is not
necessarily a conducive. And then all of a sudden the
rain cleared out. So I need to go find her
again and say good job, tell her.
Speaker 4 (01:53:12):
Thank you, thank you before we say goodbye real quick.
One more thing to add to a big weekend.
Speaker 5 (01:53:24):
Yeah, if you're looking for something fun to do this weekend,
we have a Carolina Ascent match tomorrow. First kick is
at two o'clock, and if you are in the giving mood,
you can bring a new toy with you to the
game for the Novan Toy Drive. I will be there.
Who knows, I might even sing the national anthem. You
just don't know, but come anyway for have you done
(01:53:45):
that there? I have twice now, multiple times. Yes, I
have twice now over the PA. So it's all it's
been fun. I found out just a couple of minutes
before and I just say, and singing the national anthem
is me?
Speaker 6 (01:53:56):
And do you sing it?
Speaker 1 (01:53:56):
Acapulco Acpolco?
Speaker 6 (01:53:58):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (01:54:00):
Quick, got like twenty seconds. Hancock, I'll give you the
last word before the bike drive tonight.
