Speaker 1 (00:03):
All right, it's eight twenty one on WBT on this
Monday morning, and what a great Friday night it was
here at one Julian Price Place. I don't have to
tell most of you that because I know so many
people listening to WBT. We're here and drop bikes off,
and many of you got out of the car and
came and said hello. And the weather ended up. I mean,
it was cold, but far from the worst weather we've
(00:25):
ever had for this gathering for Hancock's Bikes for Kids,
These thirty second annual Hancocks Bikes for Kids, another one
in the books. And I'm going to let him tell
us what the latest latest number that he's heard, because
this always sort of evolves a little bit from Friday
night into Monday, and it will as we get closer
to Christmas. But Charlotte's most beloved John Hancock is with
(00:47):
us on this Monday morning. Good morning, John, Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Exciting day.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
It is an exciting day.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, exciting for well, you know what next year I
get to do. The bike drive was fifty was an
extra walks, So I think that's I think that's kind
of good fun. We're as far as I know, we're
hovering around eight hundred, but the store Kids First Store
will get more as time goes on. And it is
just we saw so many new faces, and I guess
(01:18):
that's what.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
I walked away from Friday night thinking about the fact
that we had a lot of people that said, this
is the first year I've participated, and I just think
that's I just think that's outstanding.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
So we also have Brent and Hailey Sanders from Kids
First of the Carolina's on the phone line with us.
I wanted to get all three of you all with
us together because you know, not everybody could be with
us at the end of the broadcast the other night.
But you know, Brent, first of all, good morning to
both of you. Thanks for being here.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
Hey, both, thank you. Thank We're excited. It's but it's
been quite the weekend. I'll echo what John said. It
was just amazing Friday night back drive with seeing people
that were new, seeing people that have been coming for
thirty years, and just to let everyone everyone know Hayden,
you know, our son, Hayley's brother. He had fifteen volunteers
(02:11):
and twenty some girl and boy scouts at the store
and we got right at eight hundred bikes in the
store of the two stores Friday night, and then by
Saturday morning, about eight hours later, we had already deployed
three hundred and thirty bikes out into the community. Wow,
(02:33):
with more to go between now and you know the
twenty fourth. So so bikes have already found a home.
It's amazing. And I'll just say one other thing for
all the listeners that may not have heard the story.
You know, in nineteen eighty nine, when a local organization
misappropriated a bunch of gifts that Sharon had gotten from
the hospital, she started Kids First and said, you know,
(02:56):
that's never going to happen again. We're going to make
sure every family every gets their wishes, their needs. So
we have a list of families and Haley's the keeper
of the list, but we know exactly what they need,
what the mom needs, what the parents need, and so
any additional help you can give us between now and
the end of the end of the year our website
Kids First of the Carolina dot org. Every ten dollars donation,
(03:19):
every fifteen dollars donation helps us supply those actual needs
for those children. So that's what we're doing now. And
the by drive is just a major catalyst to do
all that.
Speaker 5 (03:30):
Well, Hailey, you were there. I was actually really impressed.
Speaker 6 (03:32):
Haley.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
You had like a heated jacket on you were so
prepared for for Friday night.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Go back get Beth.
Speaker 5 (03:39):
She stole it from you, bro Car.
Speaker 6 (03:41):
He pulled it out to show me how cool it
was best and I gotta say, I was like, that's
so cool, give it to me.
Speaker 5 (03:48):
Well, you guys came prepared with these gigantic smiles on
your faces, and we were, like you said, so thrilled
to see so many faces, old faces, new faces. People
bringing in their bikes. But Haley, you just heard your
dad talking about the fact that there are needs that
still need to be met. What are some of the
things people can still donate along with bringing a bike
(04:09):
to your location?
Speaker 6 (04:11):
Absolutely, I mean this is a huge year. This is
stacking up to be like the one coming out of
COVID with the need that we're seeing. So looking at
the list, what we're seeing a lot this year, Like
I mentioned, you know last week, we're seeing a lot
of coats, We're seeing socks. Shoes are huge this year,
you know, just basic necessities. We've seen a lot of
(04:33):
people asking for toilet trees, non perishable foods, just those
things that you you walk by in your kitchen every
day and don't even think about that extra can of
soup would be so helpful to another family this year.
And so that's what we're seeing. And if you're if
you're looking to donate or thinking about anything, like my
dad said, come see us at Kids First of the
(04:54):
Carolinas dot org. You can check out our social media,
our Instagram, our Facebook, and you can come see us
at the store. We would I love to see anybody
coming in and welcome you with open arms and show
you our whole organization and we were ready to make
the needs met and we just need.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Your help to do it well.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Like I said Friday night, I had the honor of
knowing Sharon when she was alive and spent many years
going to this event with her. And I remember that
that big sweat shoot sweatsuit she'd wear and walking around
and calling the shots. And I still feel like she's
there in spirit, but she'd be so proud of what
you all are doing, carrying on the torch here and
and watching down all of us. I mentioned on Friday night,
(05:33):
it took like a whole segment to do all the
thank you is one name failed to mention, who is
someone who goes back to the Sharon era, was Robin Diamond,
who brought by sandwiches for everybody. And that's you know,
people come by and make sure that we're okay as
we're out there in the cold trying to keep that
broadcast going and John is going from car to car.
But John, we got about a minute left.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
You know.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
It's it's I just love the fact that we can
keep this tradition going all these years later, and so
many people love see you on Friday night, and I
know that your heart is full on this Monday morning.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Yeah it is. You mentioned the names Brad and Robin
Tolbert are the couple up in Denver, those old neighborhood
gets together and last year they brought us seventy five
bikes and this year they brought us one hundred. So
I wanted to make sure mention them as well. Go
to Kids First of the Carolinas dot com dot org
(06:25):
and you'll be able to find out where their retail
store is, which is bott Welling Creek Market. And the
hours and the needs and the bike drive is over,
but the need for Kids first really has just begun.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Well, we will keep the word out and we'll talk
to you between now and then. Of course, John Hancock,
thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Thank you. I'll see you on Friday.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
Yes, Sir Brenton Haley, Merry Christmas to you. We'll talk
to you soon and thanks and great to always see
you on Friday night.
Speaker 5 (06:54):
Merry Christmas, Mary Christmas.
Speaker 6 (06:56):
Thank you all.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
And we should also mention a huge thanks to Ed Billick,
spearheads this thing on Friday night, and also LaToya Brody
who's our promotions director who just did a tremendous job
organizing all of the support staff, and Aj and Byron
and I could go on and on, and of course
Marshall Landis and Mike Schaeffer, our program director and general
(07:18):
manager who make sure that this thing still goes on
each year. Hancocks Bikes for Kids the thirty second annual,
over eight hundred bikes going to kids in the area
and as they were saying, already in the hands of
some of the kids
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Yeah, we have a spectacular family here in this building,
and a spectacular radio family, and all of you out
there
