Olisipo nunca foi capital para o Império Romano, mas Felicitas Ivlia Olisipo tinha muitos dos monumentos de uma rica cidade romana: termas, teatro, hipódromo e até muito provavelmente, nas imediações de Alfama, um anfiteatro semelhante ao coliseu de Roma (com gladiadores e tudo) se bem que à escala de uma cidade situado nos confins do império…Muitos deste monumentos ficaram esquecidos por mais de um milénio, até serem abruptamente revelados pelo terramoto de 1755 e pelas obras de reconstrução.
Mas nem sismos, incêndios ou voragens imobiliárias trouxeram de novo à luz do dia o monumento mais importante de todos: o centro do poder e do negócio, do culto e a da vida cívica de qualquer cidade do império.
