Entre 1850 e 1920 estrearam-se em Lisboa cerca de 250 peças de teatro musical, um género popular que inclui “revistas”, operetas, zarzuelas e outro tipo de “variedades”. Com o tempo, criaram-se empresários do ramo, vedetas, êxitos musicais e bordões, reconhecíveis por toda a gente, assim como as personagens tipificadas em palco: o político, o bêbado, a sopeira, mas também a varina, o galego ou o saloio.
