Como seria de esperar de uma cidade que foi disputada por vários poderes, Lisboa não deixou de contar com várias fortificações para a sua defesa ao longo da História. A primeira das muralhas foi durante muito tempo conhecida por cerca moura. A segunda surgiu no momento de afirmação do primeiro rei, D. Dinis e consagrou Lisboa, cada vez mais, como cabeça do reinado. O terceiro sistema defensivo da cidade é também o mais extenso e o mais bem documentado, mas não necessariamente o mais bem protegido.
