As obras para uma cave num restaurante, em 1953, puseram a descoberto uma escadaria monumental, mas foi a construção da estação de Metro do Rossio que viria a revelar, uns anos mais tarde, o que restava do maior hospital de Lisboa. O mítico edifício, começado a construir no século XV, recebia os doentes no Banco das Urinas e depois distribuía-os por diferentes alas: homens, mulheres, alienados, sifilíticos, etc.
