In Amsterdam-Oost bundelden twee oud-vechtsportkampioenen hun krachten om te praten over hun sport in de media. Marloes Coenen (42) was de eerste vrouwelijke MMA (mixed martial arts)-kampioen uit Nederland en veroverde later een titel bij onder andere Strikeforce; Bonjasky won als kickbokser meermalen de prestigieuze K-1.
Toch leverde dat destijds niet direct volop media-aandacht op. Vechtsport is nooit een mainstream sport geweest en een discussiepunt is of dat ooit gaat gebeuren. Coenen is tegenwoordig een energieke analist bij discovery+/Eurosport en geeft duiding bij UFC-evenementen. Bonjasky op zijn beurt schrijft columns voor deze site en maakt een maandelijkse podcast, terwijl hij ook voor Videoland analyses geeft bij Glory-evenementen.
Op die manier proberen zij de sport waarvan ze zo houden aan de man te brengen in Nederland. Het levert een uur lang allerlei discussies op. Is Rico Verhoeven de reden dat vechtsport in populariteit is toegenomen? Kan vechtsport ooit een rol spelen in het Sportjournaal van de NOS als het niet om Verhoeven of Badr Hari gaat? Of zijn we tevreden met streamingsdiensten Videoland en Viaplay die inzetten op vechtsport, op discovery+/Eurosport dat de UFC uitzendt, de kranten die erover schrijven en sociale media waarop de sport populair is? En moeten de MMA en het kickboksen zelf ook in de spiegel kijken in hoe de sporten te vermarkten zijn?
