Speaker 1 (00:01):
We know you're busy, bills to pay, mouths to feed,
and the man needs another favor. So, just in case
you missed what happened, I'm a fan today, we got
your back, and even if you did hear it live.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
You probably need to hear it again.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Here you go all in one place and in just
one hour, the best of the best from today on
ninety three to five and one oh seven five the Fan.
This is instant replay this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm a fan Morning Show.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
He shot me this text. Uh if I have my
date right here, Joe writes, I'm looking at my text
right now. On September third, Joe writes, here to me,
Colts race out to a five and one start with
four home games. Talk of the NFL. You heard it
here first from Joe Wright's words to actions on Sunday Afternoon,

(00:53):
God's ears unbelievable. Joe writes, what did you know then
that we have seen?

Speaker 4 (00:57):
Now?

Speaker 5 (00:59):
Well, that was Wednesday of week one and Kevin I
was feeling bullish about the Colts, primarily because of Daniel Jones,
and I just felt like the way he was going
to come in and take command of this offense. And
then I think, really, the perfect marriage with Shane Stikeen.
I mean, Shane is an elite play caller, and now
that he's got a quarterback in there that you know,

(01:19):
just has the experience that Jones has and all the
stuff that Daniel's doing pre snap, changing the play, changing
the protection, and then post snap in terms of getting
to his second, third, fourth progressions. I mean, you've seen
the offensive efficiency in the Colts. They're leading the NFL
and scoring, and so I had a good feeling about
our Colts and glad that that came to Fruition. And

(01:41):
you know you're sitting here coming off the buy at
eight and two, you were in first place.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
Now you're a half game back.

Speaker 5 (01:47):
You know of Denver and New England of their wins,
but you've put yourself now in mid November, in prime
position to make a really good run the rest of
the regular season and most importantly get into January. So
it is definitively an exciting time for Colts fans in Indianapolis.

Speaker 6 (02:04):
Joe, as a former offensive lineman, what is it like
to see your buddies are your new buddies now? The
new regime block for a guy Jonathan Taylor when you
know he can go to the house on any given play.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Oh, I mean, he's unbelievable. I mean, I think he's
the MVP of the NFL.

Speaker 5 (02:21):
And what Taylor, He's always been a progressive and what
I mean by that he gets better as the game
goes on, with his twentieth carry, his twenty fifth carry
in the third and the fourth quarter. And you've seen
that's kind of been the program. Right throw early to score,
spread him out, get a one to two score lead,
you pound him in the second half, and all of
a sudden, that defense gets a little bit tired, their

(02:42):
run fits get a little bit off in that five
to six, seven yard run in the first half becomes
the fifty to sixty seventy And nothing was better punctuated
than that eighty three yard run in Berlin to win
the game.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
And then the way they move the ball.

Speaker 5 (02:56):
Down in overtime when Atlanta knew we were running it,
everybody Olympic Stadium knew they were running it, and the
millions watching knew they were running it, and they couldn't
stop it. To be able to lean on that running game,
especially when you get into playoff football and you don't
know what the conditions are going to be you know,
we would always say, you get into January, you got
to pack your defense, you got to pack your running game.

(03:17):
And the Colts definitively have that going for him. So
that's awful exciting Joe.

Speaker 6 (03:22):
One quick follow up to that running Berlin After the game,
JT walks in, still fully clold from the game, trying
to get out of there really quickly and get back
to the States. But one of the questions he was
asked was what happened on that run for the record
breaker and taking the lead over edgend James or the
franchise leader and rushing touchdowns. And he's not arrogant, but
he casually said, what do you mean and all of

(03:44):
us were like.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
What do you mean?

Speaker 6 (03:46):
You just he just put off a run where you
ran into a wall and then you went around it
for you know, the long s touch down in the
franchise's history from a running standpoint, So that to me
was kind of funny to kind of underscore how differently
we view him versus how you've used himself, because to him,
it's another day in the office, and it's just fascinating
that that guy, knowing the franchise here and the players

(04:08):
who will play here, the running backs who'll played here,
and he might be the best who have who among
that group, which is fascinating.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
Yeah, and he is great and he expects greatness. And
what I thought really cool is, you know, Edrin James
was over there in Berlin and you know, just spreading
all the Colts love and it was awesome to be
there with you know, all the fans from Germany and
Austria and Switzerland and all around, and they were all
excited and they love the Colts. And now with two
wins in the last three years over there in Germany,

(04:36):
you can see that country. There's a ton of Colts
fans there. But I thought it was neat kind of
that passing the tours, that Edgrin was there, you know,
and I know that, you know, he is a good
mentor for JT. And so I thought that was really
really neat.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Did you do some beer drinking or some beer pouring
over there or both?

Speaker 5 (04:53):
Well, we were beer pouring, you know, the Colts were Dallas,
Edgrin and myself. We were in a bar and the
Colts said, hey, thirty minutes beers on us.

Speaker 4 (05:01):
So we were pouring beers. But TB.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
I was getting into trouble because I kind of my
first time behind a tap on the other side right
pouring the beer, and I kept getting too much phone
in the big jogging me that would have tickn me
and tossed me aside.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
He kept going no, no, no, nine, nine.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
Nine, and he was just he kept reshowing me how
to pour the beer to get the perfect poor they
know what they're doing over there in deutsch Schland.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Some struggles in the Stein atmosphere there. For Joe writes,
he's with us here on the playlist, look ours hotline.
We had a listener reach out to us Joe, And
by the way, we had another one say hey, please
pass along conflident to Joe and his radio analysts worked
bything between him and Matt Taylor is really good and
I love his insight. Another one wanted to reference this
reaction to the Jonathan Taylor touchdown, Mark, could you play this?

Speaker 1 (05:49):
There's a record pracker for Jonathan Taylor and it puts
the call to top twenty two to seventeen.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
Hello, all time record. Now the wo who someone's asking here?
If that is a reference to Homer Simpson was just
purely Joe, right, So was that a little Homer in you.

Speaker 5 (06:10):
Yeah, I'm not a big Simpsons guy, so that was
just me. You know, when moments like that, defining moments
and you're on the radio, you know, Matt is so
good and you don't want to speak over Matt and
let him do his thing. But also I felt like
in the moment there needed to be some sort of reaction.
So that was the first one that came to me.
But boy, that was awful, exciting, and it was it
was fun to be over there and call that game

(06:31):
with Matt and you look at now. I mean, I'll
be in Kansas City coming up on Sunday. I mean,
that's the game of the week. And I think what's
most exciting to me, Fellas, is that the Colts are
gonna be they put themselves in were these last seven games.
There's gonna be several quote games of the week where
the whole NFL is going to be watching them, and

(06:52):
it's fun to see us back in the mix.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
It's fun to see us.

Speaker 5 (06:55):
Have the team that is very capable of going on
a deep playoff run in January. And it's gonna be
a tremendous test Sunday because Kansas City. I mean, they're
not down and out, but they're down. And if there
ever was a must win game for the Chiefs, it's
gonna be Sunday at one o'clock and Arrowhead and the
Colts are gonna get their very best, which I think
is great because it's gonna be you know, they're the

(07:17):
champs and they played in what seven straight AFC championship
games and you've got to go to their stadium, So man,
what a tremendous opportunity. And for the Colts, I mean,
it's awful exciting that you get to go out there
and again they've struggled a little bit, but they're still
the standard in the AFC and you're gonna play them
in a game that they're very desperate for, So you're
gonna get their best shot. The Colts are gonna give

(07:38):
them their best shot. And it's gonna be a fun
one coming up here in six days.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
If I remember correctly, the Chiefs were pretty bad when
you guys went to Arrowhead back when you were playing
Could I get the top maybe three road environments Joe
Wright's played in in his NFL career.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
Yeah, the Chiefs were bad, but that's an awesome stadium.
You pull up, it's got such a collegiate atmosphe I mean,
everybody's tailgating, the whole thing smells like barbecue. I always
was a big fan of outdoor stadiums with real grass
because to me, that just felt like football. So I
would say my top three were probably Kansas City, Denver,
which is the same, and then even though we had

(08:17):
no success there when I played, and it's continued on
this year, but Pittsburgh. Those were my three favorite stadiums
to play in because you always had.

Speaker 4 (08:25):
Just an awesome environment.

Speaker 5 (08:27):
And yeah, Kansas City and Denver we had some success in,
but not Pittsburgh. But yeah, it'll be a fun one
coming up on Sunday. And I think for the Colts again,
everything to me is about it's the next.

Speaker 4 (08:37):
Game and what's most important.

Speaker 5 (08:39):
But the previous ten you've put yourself in a position
to contend for the top spot in the AFC, and.

Speaker 4 (08:47):
That's really all you can ask for. Now.

Speaker 5 (08:49):
It's about continuing to get better these next seven games.
And I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on the
trade for Sauce Gardener. I know you guys have talked
about a bunch on your show, but just watching him
in person, seeing his length, seeing his size and athleticism,
you get a healthy ward back in the secondary with Gardner,
Kenny Moore, who's an elite nickel and buying them and

(09:09):
Cross and I really think you have a very good
argument that you have the best secondary unit now in
the NFL. And when you go and play in these
games against some of these good quarterbacks and a lot
of good receivers, now you have second and third and
fourth options when you can cover guys, and I just
think that's really really important for the Colts coming down
the stretch there. I'm excited to watch that secondary someday

(09:31):
kind of all playing together healthy for the first time
and seeing what they can do on the back end.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Kind Of on that point, Joe and last one, and
we certainly appreciate your time on this Monday morning. The
ward addition with Sauce obviously comparing that to the deforce
Buckner subtraction for however long it's going to be. How
do you kind of view that right now, which you've
theoretically upgraded significantly in the secondary, but at the same

(09:56):
time you potentially have lost your best defensive player for
at least a month.

Speaker 5 (10:01):
Yeah, and that's a tough loss. I mean, he's out
at least three more weeks. And you saw, you know,
some of the success Atlanta had running the football against Buckner,
and he's so good not only in the run game,
in the pass game and just his leadership. So you know,
I always say that the pass rushing the secondary work.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
Hand in hand.

Speaker 5 (10:16):
Right, If you can cover well on the back end,
you know, that gives more time for those pass rushers
to get there, and the more he can heat them
up early on, then you're able to get the quarterback
to force the ball out of his hand quickly. So
that's gonna be a big loss for Buckner, but you
need guys to step up, you know. I think Anabarre
has done well in there.

Speaker 4 (10:32):
I think, you know, JT.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
Toulimolio, I think he's shown some flashes now getting some
playing time, especially as a pass rusher on the interior,
you know, rushing on those guards in the center, maybe
on third down, and so excited to watch some of
those young guys blossom. And we're going to need that
development because obviously that's a big loss without Buckner in there.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
Solidify in the middle.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
This from George to my boys run in a lacrosse
tournament at Grand Park. We kept popping into Matt and
Joe and the call in Germany. Great insight. As my
fourth grader said, it was almost like we're watching it
on TV. I would say that is quite the compliment.
Speaking of fourth grade, Joe, is there our Lady Mount
Carmel undefeated season that just wrapped up? I'd be remiss
if I didn't give a little shout out to Raider Nation.

Speaker 5 (11:14):
Yeah, well, thank you. Yeah, the Raiders got it done.
We had a tough championship game, but we got it done.
So four straight city championships for the boys. So it
was it was a lot of fun. And now we
can dial in one hundred percent of the Colts here
these last couple months.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
But it's fun. You can feel the.

Speaker 5 (11:31):
Buzz Kevin in Indianapolis on Mondays and people are walking
around and they're talking about the Colts, and you know,
you and I both know well, I mean, we were
both working for the organization. The last time we hosted
a playoff game was twenty fifteen, which is kind of
crazy to think about, but so it's fun to kind
of envision that for the future. We got a long
way to go, and there's there's seven more games to play,

(11:54):
but it's setting up to be a fun January here
with Colts football in Indianapolis, and I know Colts Nation
and we are we are hungry for some playoff wins.
So let's go out and let's get it done.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
Let's starting right tackle and that last home a playoff
game was Indeed, Joe writ's a little different off oak
Ridge Road one hundred and forty sixth. He is the great,
Joe Writes, he's with us here and he'll be on
the call coming up Sunday at Arrowhead. Joe as always Sarah,
thank you right.

Speaker 5 (12:19):
Thanks Ballas have a great Monday afternoon.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
It's the best of the best from today's broadcast lineup. Instead,
replay continues in a moment on ninety three five and
one oh seven five the Fan. This is instant replay
today Bonquerian Company.

Speaker 7 (12:45):
Derek Schultz filming in for my good friend Jake Querry
as he is away on vacation overseas. A guy that
seemingly is is never a way, especially during crossover season
like this football and men's basketball converging. Is a man
that needs no introduction. He's the longtime voice of the
Who's on both ends. His name's Don Fisher and he
joins us on the Java House Peel and Poor Guest
line Java House dot com Mun's code Jake twenty five

(13:07):
for twenty five percent off your purchase.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
Fish is great to talk with you.

Speaker 4 (13:11):
How are you?

Speaker 2 (13:12):
I'm good, Derek. How about yourself?

Speaker 3 (13:14):
I'm doing great, kind of like riding a bike.

Speaker 7 (13:16):
It's nice to fill in here every couple of months
or so and just to I don't know, prove to
myself that I can still do it. It's also a
great check on my ego as well to get to
be back on the sports radio again. But let's talk football.
Let's start there. You know, a bit of a lethargic
first half on Saturday, but we saw the Hoosiers really
turn it on there in the second half and run
away thirty one to seven win. I mean safe to

(13:36):
say the program's in a good place when we can
kind of nitpick a twenty four point win over Wisconsin, right.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
No question about that.

Speaker 8 (13:43):
Obviously, Indiana did not play wellhome the first half. I
think the turning point was at a time when Signetti
went in the locker room, and instead of raging use
of bloody blue, he basically went in and said, look, guys,
we didn't look very good in the first He says,
just go out and have fun, have fun, enjoy yourselves,

(14:05):
and go out and play football like you know you
can play. And they came out in the second half
and they racked up twenty one points, two hundred and
twenty nine yards of offense. They held the other team, Wisconsin,
to just twenty three yards in the second half, and look,
they win the ball game going away, no question about that.
And you're going to have a game like that every

(14:25):
now and then where you just don't have the same energy.
I think a big part of that is because they've
had a significant number of injuries. Fortunately none of them
are not as many as some teams have had, and
certainly not as many season ending injuries as some have had.
But they're a beat up football team right now, and
they've played some very tough competition. And I will tell

(14:47):
you one thing. If Wisconsin didn't do anything else on Saturday,
they did hit you. And it was interesting in that
context alone.

Speaker 7 (14:55):
Yeah, and I'm glad that you said that about the
fact about the energy, like you're not always going to
have that. And I know that this success, a lot
of this just overall value football is very new to
the fan base, right Don, But I think we're seeing Indiana. Yeah,
really here go through normal football things this year, as
opposed to last year where they were sort of blowing
everybody away. Like winning at Kinnick is hard, winning a

(15:15):
happy Valley is hard. Sometimes you're gonna come out flat
when there's a noon start on a Saturday at home.
Like that's real, just kind of normal football stuff that
even great teams go through.

Speaker 2 (15:28):
Yeah, it just makes Indiana look like the average good team.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
Yeah, you're right about that.

Speaker 8 (15:35):
And that's and that's saying something different than we've ever
said before, if you.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Know what I mean, No, no question.

Speaker 7 (15:41):
Don Fisher, the voice of value football and basketball, joins
us on the Java House Peel and poor guest line.
Four more touchdowns and a sparkling twenty two of twenty
four stat line for Fernana Mendoza and he seems as
shirt of a New York City invite at this point.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
But how big of a deal is it?

Speaker 4 (15:55):
Don?

Speaker 3 (15:56):
For the program?

Speaker 7 (15:56):
You know, we talk about the team's success, right, but
to have an individual like this that you can push
out there, really for the first time since Anthony Thompson
back in eighty seven.

Speaker 8 (16:06):
That's exactly right. I was just going to say the
same thing. This would be the first time we've had
anybody even in the conversation.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Since then.

Speaker 8 (16:15):
And I always thought that Antoine Randol should have been
in that conversation, even though and I think there was
a little bit of that back when Antoine played, but
not nearly as much as I thought he deserved that.
Being said, to have somebody in that role again is
really enlightening in the sense of what Indiana football has
been able to do here in the last couple of years.

(16:36):
And I thought Curtis Rourke last year was phenomenal. I
thought he was the best decision maker I'd ever seen
on a football field from an Indiana perspective. And he
did not disappoint me in anything that he did last year,
and he played through an injury, it was incredibly tough.
And then you got Curtis Rourke who comes along and

(16:57):
he tops him. I mean, he's now broken Curtis record
of thirty touchdown passes in a season, or is record
of twenty nine that Rourke held and now he's got
thirty and we still got a game and maybe more
than one or two games in the postseason, So it's
going to be very interesting to see how that all
plays out. But the most important thing right now is

(17:17):
that he's Indiana's quarterback and he is available for the
rest of the season, and knock on wood, of course,
we're hoping there's no injuries involved there.

Speaker 7 (17:26):
It's wild just because he's been here for like six
months and it feels like it just something about him
and the way that he talks about the team and
you know, he'll do the postgame interviews or whatever else.
It just feels like he's been here forever, like he
just gets it. And you know, here's a kid that
he's it. You grew up in Miami, right and then
he goes to cal and he just kind of air
drops in. I mean, this is the new era that

(17:46):
we're in where guys just air drop in, but not
always do. Those guys sort of acclimate themselves right away
to their surroundings. And there's just very much like a
one of us feel with Mendoz I feel like, and
it reverber around the locker room as well.

Speaker 8 (18:02):
That is absolutely true, and this kid's a great leader.
He talks, He talks constantly to his teammates about how
good they are. He just does and he says all
the right stuff, and I don't think it's fake in
any way, shape or form.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
He really believes it.

Speaker 8 (18:19):
And what tells you the most is that Kurt Signetti
has said the exact same things He's talking about this
young man, what he is like in the locker room,
how he gets along with his teammates, how he encourages everybody,
and it's all after he doesn't even talk about himself
in their regard, other than the fact that he says,
I just got to get better this, this, and this.

(18:40):
But he's just a terrific young man. There's just a
question about it. His brother, Alberto, I think, is a
different personality, so to speak, but just the same kind
of person which tells you a lot about the parenting
of these guys.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
And I just think.

Speaker 8 (18:56):
Indiana is really well represented by Fernandoman and will be
as well at the high school ceremonies because I think
he'll be invited for sure.

Speaker 7 (19:06):
Someone else I wanted to talk about too is is
Omar Cooper Junior, and he had another touchdown catch on Saturday,
but I kind of wanted to go back to that.
And I know you talked about this with Jake as
well done, but the Penn State winner in the back
of the end zone and just sort of his career arc,
if you will, or his character arc in a way,
because here's an Indianapolis kid that pledged AU when let's

(19:27):
face it, things were not good, right, and he still
gave his pledged Indiana. He's stuck through a coaching change,
something that seems to be extremely rare for guys in
this era, and then he makes perhaps the biggest play
in IU football history last week. You know, as much
as Mendoza is maybe like the new age kind of
blueprint for players, I look at Cooper as sort of
the old school way, right, you kind of grow and

(19:50):
stick around and develop, and we've seen him just get
better and better each year. But man, am I right
in saying he's become a legitimate frontline, big ten receiver.
Not just the most memorable play arguably in Indiana history,
but a guy that they can really rely on.

Speaker 8 (20:06):
There is no question about that. He was that guy
last year too. He really he had his breakout year
last season, no question about that. And he's just built
on it throughout this season, and the play that he
made against Penn State will go down in history as
one of the greatest ever. I've heard guys on the
national scene talk about that catch and how he got

(20:26):
his eyes down to see where the out of bounds
line was and get that ball into the ends or
you know, to get the touchdown call, to get his
leg down to do what he did.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
Just a phenomenal.

Speaker 8 (20:38):
Play and that's going to be one of the greatest
of all time, no matter who, what team you're talking about,
or what catch has been made. With the importance of
it at the time that it happened, all of that
plays into it as well, So no question, and Omar
is a great young man. He's a great guy to
talk to, cares all about his football team rather than himself,

(21:01):
and still knows that he's got a long way to
go as far as improvement is concerned. I say a
long way to go in the sense of maybe where
he wants to be in his future. But I'm talking
about he has just grown and grown as a football.

Speaker 2 (21:14):
Player at IU.

Speaker 8 (21:15):
And again it's another kid from Lawrence North High School
that has shown that he is the real deal, And
there's no doubt Lawrence North has had some really good
players come out of there from a football standpoint, and
basketball as well. But I think he's just another example
of the kind of kid that you've won your football team.

Speaker 7 (21:34):
The great Don Fisher joins us on the Java House
Peel and poor guest Line here on Quering Company. Thanks
so much for joining us Java House dot com mu's
code Jake twenty five for twenty five percent off your purchase.
Let's shift over to basketball too, who's yours undefeated? They're
a little bit of a closer shave last night than
the first couple of games. But you know, Fish, I'm
not telling you anything that you don't already know. Fans
way winning over everything, right, So watchability is not everything.

(21:58):
But this style that d Devrees is brought in a
little bit different than what we've seen of late. Is
it a nice change of pace to you know, the
pack line defense and sort of the older old school
offensive or defensive concepts that we've seen in the postcreen era.
To see something that you know, winning or losing, I
think we can definitively say I use going to be

(22:18):
really fun to watch.

Speaker 8 (22:21):
That is absolutely the case, you know how good they're
going to be in the Big Ten. We'll find that out.
The future will tell. But here's what we do know.
This team plays together. They play as hard as anybody
we've seen it. Indiana play hard in the last eight
to ten years. They have three point shooting, which they
didn't show yesterday was primarily the reason they couldn't get

(22:43):
going like they had liked, like they have been in
all three games preceding it, and the games and exhibition
and down in Puerto Rico as well. I mean, the
three point shot has become such a major factor in
college basketball, and this team's got multiple three points shooters
on this ball club. It just didn't hit them in
this particular contest. Prior to that, they were hitting over

(23:05):
fifty percent of their three point shots most in all
the games except for the first one. So it's a
team that I think has been well constructed. I think
that's the one thing that you got to give Darren
Greeves tremendous credit for is that he went out and
constructed this roster based on who he could get to
come to Indiana, and he's got the right guys, because

(23:28):
you don't coalesce a basketball team with thirteen new faces
on it and be this good this early in the season.
I think this is the more remarkable jobs of building
a roster that I've seen in a long time, certainly
in Indiana in years, and I'm excited about it. I
think this team is going to compete with everybody that

(23:49):
they play. Yesterday I think was a little bit of
an aberration, but the team that they played in Carnate,
they're the basketball team they're expected to win their conference,
and likewise that was the case for Milwaukee within the
Horizon League, so they've played some competition here. Of course,
they beat a Marquette team that everybody thought they'd really
struggle with, especially with their pressure defense, and they hung

(24:12):
in there, got the job done, and then built on
the on the second half performance and actually blew away
Marquette in the those final ten to fifteen minutes of
the ballgame.

Speaker 2 (24:21):
So this is a.

Speaker 8 (24:22):
Team that's going to be fun to watch this year,
and I think they're going to be a lot better
than a lot of people thought they would be.

Speaker 7 (24:28):
Yeah, And a lot of the reason for that is,
you know, you've seen the play of guys like Wilkerson
in degrees and you know, I think they've gotten there.
They're just too I mean, hell, Wilkerson is shooting fifty
two percent or something from three, and it feels like
in the games that I've watched this he's shot like
ninety percent. Like it just feels like every time he
lets it go, it's going to go in. But Sam
Alexis is a guy that strikes me. You know, he

(24:49):
brings the winning pedigree coming from Florida, and you know,
you talk about this team being well constructed, could he
be sort of an X factor of sorts for them
as well. I don't want to be corny and say
like glue and all of that, because I think he's
better than just some like, you know, role player. I
think he's going to play a prominent role for IU
this year, just in what we've seen through the first
four games. But he's a guy that he's really jumped

(25:10):
out to me with how he's played through these first
handful of games.

Speaker 2 (25:14):
Well, he jumped out to me and San Juan.

Speaker 8 (25:16):
I went to Puerto Rico with the team, as most
people know, I went there just to see what this
team was going to look like and see how they
you know, coalesced together as a team, so to speak.
I was blown away by Alexis down there and he
came off the bench and all of those ballgames, continues
to do so here in the early part of the season.
But he comes off the bench every single time with energy.

(25:38):
He goes out there and does his role, so to speak,
because he's he's really an undersized post player, but he
plays like a guy that six' ten because he. Can
he's so, athletic he's, quick and he does all the
right things underneath the, basket and he just plays as
hard as anybody on the court in his. Position SO
i just think he is exempt in the sense of

(26:01):
what he's been able to accomplish to this. Point i'm
assuming that he's probably going to continue to come off
the bench at least for the time. Being BUT i
just love what he brings to the table every time
he comes out. There it seems to give this team
a spark because he can get up and down the
floor and do all the things that a normal post
player generally doesn't. DO i, mean he runs the floor

(26:23):
really well and all those kinds of Things Reed bailey does.
Too bailey's probably more adept at running down the floor
and doing it with a basketball in his hand than Sam,
Is but The lexus does bring something different to the,
table AND i really like What i've seen from him thus.

Speaker 7 (26:37):
Far Las Senor fish AND i apologize if you've covered this,
already BECAUSE i think a lot OF iu fans have
circled the Date december, sixth with The Big ten football championship,
likely and then of course The louisville.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
Game would you.

Speaker 7 (26:52):
Double dip and do the double you, know kind of
like the four hundred and the five hundred in? Racing
would you do both games that? Day or would you
just allocate yourself to football and let somebody else handle.

Speaker 8 (27:04):
Basketball i'm contemplating doing both at this, point But i'm
not sure that's going to.

Speaker 2 (27:10):
Happen it all kind of depends. Too you. Know i've
already had my cold for.

Speaker 8 (27:14):
The, year so HOPEFULLY i don't get another one of,
those because it leasily lasts on me about a, month
it seems. Like BUT i feel really good right. Now
the voice feels really good right. NOW i did two
ball games this past. Weekend granted it wasn't back to
back like it would be for that particular. Contest The
louisville game is going to be a challenge for this

(27:35):
C indiana ball. Club you saw what they did Against
kentucky and there's no doubt they're really. Good So i'm
hoping to be able to do. Both but that may
be something that comes down to the wire in regard
to WHETHER i do both or. Not we'll just have
to wait and see. It it's kind of how you,
feel you know WHAT i?

Speaker 7 (27:49):
Mean, yeah, Absolutely but what a cool, opportunity. Huh do
a big time game In india Against louisville and then
A big ten football championship, game which would be quite
the night for The, hoosiers no doubt about. That are
you coming off the buying Football men's hoops next in
Action thursday against Linden. Wood you to Hear Don fischer
on that call as you can with men's basketball and
football games as you had for decades and. Decades fast

(28:11):
sakes so much great catching up and thanks so much
for coming on the.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
Show thanks for having, Me, derek glad to have you
back for a. While there you.

Speaker 3 (28:17):
Go that's our Friend Don.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
Fisher it's the best of the best from today's broadcast. Lineup,
instead replay continues in a moment on ninety three to
five and one oh seven five the. Fan this is
instead replay earlier this afternoon on the ride WITH.

Speaker 2 (28:40):
Jmv he is.

Speaker 9 (28:43):
The, voice whether we're talking about into a microphone headset
or into his own. Phone The pacers For PACERS. Tv
christini joins us live from the toilet tonight the side
of The pacers and The. Pistons later on this, Evening
chris joins. Us, Now, Hello, chris how you DOING?

Speaker 10 (29:00):
GMV i Know i'm in your favorite, state so oh.

Speaker 9 (29:04):
Yeah how's the toilet treating you?

Speaker 2 (29:06):
Today it's, sunny is it?

Speaker 9 (29:09):
REALLY i didn't know the sun came out into. Toilet
everything was like rust and bo and yellow armpit.

Speaker 2 (29:15):
Smudges, no it's the cool area where we stay.

Speaker 10 (29:19):
Here we're not far away from Little Caesars. Arena went
to shoot around earlier, today little, chili but bright, sunshine
pretty clear skies here In detroit.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
Today there you.

Speaker 3 (29:29):
Go, well it's very cloudy and it's not even.

Speaker 9 (29:34):
UNCERTAIN i don't want to say, uncertainty because the things
have been certain in a while that The spacer team
struggle to really keep anything going and certainly to win.
Games we'll start right here with the possibility Of Bennic
matherin being back later on.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
TONIGHT i would think that's a strong.

Speaker 10 (29:54):
Possibility, uh you, know we'll know officially before the, game
but everything was trending in the right direction For ben
to come. Back he had two really good games in
the two that he's, played thirty six and twenty, six
and The pacers would desperately need his productivity and his
scoring right. Now if you look back at The toronto

(30:15):
game On saturday, Night Pascal siakam And Andrew DEMHART i
thought were both. Terrific they combined for the fifty plus,
points shot better than fifty percent from the, field AND
i think the two of them were combined nine to
fifteen from, Three but the.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
Rest of the team not so. Good so you, know
it's a.

Speaker 10 (30:32):
Heavy burden on those two guys right, now especially With
obi topping out and And Aaron nesmith's going to be
out for some. Time Getting Benedict mathern back to night
will be big for this.

Speaker 9 (30:43):
Team Is Kristen, airey voice of The Pacers PACERS, tv
by the, way excellent job on the phone the other,
night having been there and done, that certainly not in
front of that big of an.

Speaker 2 (30:55):
AUDIENCE i know exactly what you dealt. With, yeah it
was one of those. Situations we're were.

Speaker 10 (31:00):
Sitting there was a third quarter and maybe into the,
fourth and all of a, sudden everything went dead on
from A tv, Perspective, now my iPad was still, working
the stat monitor was still. WORKING i looked down At
Eddie johnson And Kevin ray With. Phoenix they were just
down from, us and they lost everything. Too and so
it was the power grid backed by THE tv trucks

(31:24):
that somebody opened door that they weren't supposed to, open
and it absolutely killed.

Speaker 2 (31:28):
Everything so our producer.

Speaker 10 (31:33):
Gave me a call on my phone and he, said
here's the number for you to dial Into, atlanta and
SO i just blindly put this number into my.

Speaker 2 (31:42):
Phone and THEN.

Speaker 10 (31:43):
Jj was talking to our producer and our director.

Speaker 2 (31:47):
And they just said, Go.

Speaker 4 (31:50):
SO i.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
WENT i wasn't.

Speaker 10 (31:52):
SURE i wasn't sure what anybody could. SEE i wasn't,
sure you, know if we were truly on the. Air
BUT i tried to be as descriptive as. Possible, unfortunately
things were not going very well at that point for the.
Pacers Devin booker was sort of taken, over AND i
just did a little bit OF i guess radio play
by play into my phone that was on, Television SO

(32:17):
i had not done one of those john in thirty.
YEARS i Remember Ralph reef AND i were In. MILWAUKEE
i guess it would have been about twenty five years.
Ago we were In milwaukee and they messed up our
phone line and our equipment wouldn't work or, whatever and
so we had to find another phone, line and we

(32:40):
basically passed a handset back and forth AS i would
call the play by play and then handed To ralph
for some. Commentary then he'd give me the phone BACK
i would.

Speaker 2 (32:50):
Do play by.

Speaker 10 (32:50):
Play so it sort of reminded me of those.

Speaker 9 (32:53):
DAYS i once upon a time in nineteen ninety, THREE
i was a senior At Indiana state AND i was
with the baseball team AT, lsu AND i had to
do play by play from a payphone on MY mci
calling card during the entirety of a game BECAUSE i
couldn't get the equipment to.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
Work.

Speaker 10 (33:12):
Hey one of my favorite stories WAS i was At
university Of Indanapolis Indiana, central and it was probably forty years.
Ago we're playing AT iupui in the. Gym Bob lovell
as the athletic director in the basketball. Coach they don't
have my phone line in. Courtside SO i had to
go up By bob's office and alligator clip to his

(33:33):
phone in his. Office and there is a window. THERE
i don't know if it's still. THERE i literally called
the game through a window AND i would put the
crowd mic up against as close to the window as
possible to see IF i could get any sound out of.
It and that's WHERE i that's WHERE i ultimately did the.

Speaker 9 (33:52):
Game technical, Issue, yeah technical issues, happen and it doesn't
really matter what era of technology were. IN i, mean,
HELL i KNOW i had three and a half hours
with no phones for the all Requests saturday night On saturday,
night SO i know exactly what you're talking.

Speaker 2 (34:05):
About. Yeah, Yeah so you just have to deal with.
It you just, roll you.

Speaker 9 (34:10):
Do The pacers are trying to deal with it right.
Now And i'll make a. Comparison so they're playing a
team In detroit that's eleven and. Two detroit has gone
through a similar level of losing in the not so distant.
Past And i'm talking about all these Guys, Cunningham, Durham.
Thompson these guys have all dealt with what The pacers

(34:32):
are going through right, now and certainly at eleven and
two at this, moment they look better for.

Speaker 2 (34:37):
It, yeah no. QUESTION i mean this was two years.

Speaker 10 (34:41):
Ago so in twenty, three twenty, four when The pacers
were going to The Eastern conference. Finals two years, ago
it was a season Where detroit lost twenty eight in a.
Row at one point they were three and thirty. Six
and again it was With duran And ivy And cunningham
And stewart and all these. Guys, now you, Know i'm

(35:02):
hopeful that we're not looking at something like that right
now for The, pacers but it shows you that things can,
happen and when injuries, happen it can really compromise. You
if you go back to twenty nineteen When toronto Beat
Golden state to win the. Title the next, Year Klay
thompson either TOURS acl or his Achilles steph played like

(35:25):
five games and it was as we got INTO covid
And Golden state went fifteen and fifty and that was
a year removed from going to THE Nba. Finals so
it tells you that injuries play a huge. ROLE i
think The pacers felt, good you, know even With Tyrese haliburton,
out they thought going into the, year, okay we still

(35:46):
got the bulk of our. Team the problem is now
the bulk of the team is injured and guys that
you're dealing. With but you have to figure out a
way out of. IT i see this group working hard every.
DAY i Thought Pascal siokham's comments after the game On saturday,
night we're very good from a leadership.

Speaker 2 (36:05):
Perspective So Rick carlisle said It john before the.

Speaker 10 (36:10):
Game he, said THE nba is humbling and as good
as you can have, it As indiana had it back In,
june a half away from winning a. Title it's not
going so well right. Now but you've just got to
keep fighting and see what can. Happen AND i told
you this we talked off there the other. DAY i
knew when the schedule came out with seven of the

(36:32):
first twelve on the road and seven against The Western
conference that even with a healthy, team it was going
to be tough to be around five. Hundred but with
all the injuries that they've, had it's just made it even.

Speaker 9 (36:44):
Worse the one thing And kristinarry joins Us on And
Andy moore aim on a. Group plotline that concerns me
is what you can see in the obvious finger pointing
and bickering that has been going on with the team
that you never felt else it's ever been like that.
Before and this is all with this this losing, streak

(37:05):
with the, disappointment it can all lead down this. Path
that is something that everybody's going to have to get
a hold of here relatively.

Speaker 10 (37:14):
Soon, WELL i, think you, know there's always, frustration AND i,
think you, know looking at this group and watching them
at shoot around, TODAY i mean there's they're still all.
In they're trying to figure it. Out they're trying to
figure out how do we get out of this? Situation
and quite, honestly guys have to be. Better if you
look At detroit the last two games they played Without

(37:34):
cunningham And, durham And thompson's been out and the ivy's
out And Tobias harris was, out but they have found
a way to win. Games so you just you just
gotta you just got to fight through. It some guys
have to play, Better there's no question about. THAT i
think Getting Benedict mathern back will be a huge boost
of this team because it gives them some offense to

(37:58):
help them hard and siakam that they've sorely been lacking
here over the last couple of.

Speaker 9 (38:03):
Weeks all, Right So pistons And pacers coming up later on,
tonight and, obviously, yeah there's a team in need of
any positivity and they return To matherin if that's what
ends up being, solidified there's some at least positivity right.
THERE i think what is most disappointing to, Me and
maybe we already knew, This, chris you, know maybe then you,

(38:25):
know size it up and get. Better but a couple
of guys that have played significant supporting roles in the
past that have not translated when they're being counted. Upon
and they're both from the same draft, class and That's
walker and That shepherd that has just been disappointing with
the production we've seen from them when their team needs.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
It, well especially.

Speaker 10 (38:48):
EARLY i Thought jira shot the ball really really well.
Early he had a twenty point game in a seventeen
point game and had a. STRETCHER i think he was
eight of sixteen from three point. Shot but for whatever,
reason that has gone away over the last five or six.
Games And Ben shepherd, Too hopefully with math and back
that takes a little bit of pressure off those two
guys and they can play a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
Loose AND i think.

Speaker 10 (39:11):
That's got to BE i Think Pascal siakam said that
On Saturday. Night guys just got to be a little
bit more. Loose now they've they've they've.

Speaker 2 (39:17):
Played a little too, tight and.

Speaker 10 (39:19):
That can happen when things go, Bad so those will
be things to. WATCH i also think it's it's too
bad That Johnny furfey and AND q And Quintin jackson
have been out Because jackson was a big reason The
pacers won their only game Against Golden, state And Johnny
furfey HAD i, thought a really good summer and was

(39:41):
trending to be a rotational player early in the, season
but he's been out with an ankle. Injury so, yeah
all of those things have just piled on and created,
those you, know not so good opportunities right, now.

Speaker 9 (39:55):
All, right shout out to technology. Tonight shall you stay
in place For Chris denari on the road In detroit
coming up later ont and on The PACERS. Tv The
voice of The Pacers Chris kndede to join us on
The Andy Moore Automatic Group, hotline hopefully here. Soon beginning
tonight things get a little bit. BETTER i know how
brutal that can.

Speaker 2 (40:16):
Be hang in all, Right THANKS.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
