Speaker 1 (00:01):
We know you're busy, bills to pay, mouths to feed,
and the man.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Eats another favor. So just in case you missed what happened,
I'm a fan today. We got your back and even
if you did hear it live, you probably need to
hear it again.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Here you go, all in one place and in just
one hour, the best of the best from today on
ninety three to five and one oh seven five the Fan.
This is instant replay this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
I'm a fan Morning show.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
The head coach. He is Rick Carlile, coach. Good morning
to you.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
How are you okay?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Last night?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
The effort to get back in and I thought it
was one of your better bench performances of the season.
What do you see from some of those individuals and
just in general, you guys getting it to a point
where you know you obviously had a shot to force
in overtime.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Yeah, the second half was way better than the first half. Yeah,
we gotta do better job at closing quarters. We had
a we had worked hard to get the lead back
at the end of the first and then had a
couple of miscues that put us down I think three points,
and just you know, the ability to play from in
front is always important in NBA games. Second quarter was

(01:13):
our bad quarter. We lost by thirteen, and so that
got us, you know, a sixteen point deficit, and then
you know, coming out of halftime, we just said, we said, look,
let's let's go out there and win the first five
minutes and then and then go from there and and
get ourselves back into this thing. And the guys fought hard.

(01:37):
We had we had a lot of good performances off
the bench, as you mentioned, and gave ourselves a chance,
but a disappointing ending. And then you know, at nine
seconds left, I mean, Ben misses, the Ben gets a
good look in the corner of the shot misses, and
Pascal goes up for the rebound and gets thrown to

(01:58):
the floor, and then there is a miss a miss.
Well there's a there's a no call of a foul
that should have been called. And so that was that
was disappointing too. But in stretches like this, you know,
a lot of things don't go your way and you
just gotta you gotta stay positive and you gotta keep slugging.

Speaker 5 (02:18):
Rick to that point when you know you're going to
get a two minute report that you might not like,
what's your reaction to just that part of it.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Yeah, we have a we have a ratings system that
comes out every day for every time there's a game,
and you know that's that's an opportunity to reflect your
your feelings about things and give uh you know, give
give the feedback. And so look, it's disappointing, but you know,

(02:51):
the referees they're not trying to miss calls. You know,
it's just a it's a men not machines proposition, a
very difficult job. Thousands of events that happened over forty
eight minutes with the clock, you know, ticking, and you know,
you got a hope that you've you've stacked enough good

(03:12):
plays to be able to absorb a situation like that.
But you know, last night that was that was not
the case. I I knew about it after the game.
I didn't go into it with the media because you know, uh, yeah,
right now, we can't just be into sour grapes. You know,
we've got to we've got to find ways to get

(03:33):
to get better each day.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
To that point, Rick, looking at the night that Jars
Walker had, it was a very positive night for him overall.
What did you like about how he pick and shows
his spots on both sides of the floor.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
Yeah, one of his better games for sure, and shows
what he's capable of. And uh, you know we need him.
I mean, this is uh, this is a great opportunity
for him. I mean we've we've kind of labored that
whole on this show many times and last night was
terrific and he was a big reason we got back

(04:06):
in the game.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Rick Carlisle with the Sarrogon Pacers North of the Border
coming up tomorrow, it'll be the Toronto Raptors who've been very,
very good to start this season. And Rick is with
us year on the payloss Slickers hot line. You started
Andrew nemmart on Kate Cunningham last night, Coach, and I
know you talked about with us in the off season
just how much you put on Andrew's plate. And part
of it is, frankly, I don't know how many other
options you have, but how do you kind of balance

(04:28):
Andrew's defensive responsibilities right now with getting another ball handler
at times on the floor with him to help him
out offensively in all the responsibilities that you probably need
him to handle.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Well, last night, there was really no choice I mean, yeah,
we have all the numbers of all the guys that
have guarded Cunningham and it's not even close. We had
to have Andrew guarding him, and so you know, he
did a tremendous job. And if you really watch the
fourth quarter and all the things that were going on
on and off the ball, I mean, it was just

(05:04):
it was a miraculous the way he was navigating over
screens and everything else. And Cunningham still scored a few
baskets and a couple of times he got switches and scored.
But some nights there just simply is no choice. We
may be able to alleviate, you know, the matchup situation,

(05:25):
maybe for short stretches during the game. I think Walker
guarded him a little bit last night, but you know,
counting him right now is you know, he's one of
the top players in the world and you've got to
have your best guy on him as best as often
as you can.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
You said post game last night that it's a hard
league right now to score in. Is that with how
the game has been like officiated early in the season,
what you're seeing defensively, I was kind of curious if
you had any more on that right now.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
Well we're hav control scoring. So and look, I mean
right now with with our challenges, uh, you know from
a personnel staying, injuries and all that, we just got
to be really on point. I mean, our defense has
got to be tuned to its best, its best version.

(06:19):
We've got to be square and not getting our hands
involved otherwise the other team marches to the bonus. And
then you know, we we've got to avoid miscues on offense.
You know, first half last night we had some really
good opportunities and there were a couple of times we
we threw the ball away and transition when when we

(06:41):
had some space and had some numbers and just just
just made a play that wasn't quite there. And so
you know, these things pile up quickly, and you know,
a couple a couple of the wrong plays at the
wrong time can take can take you out of a

(07:02):
very strong position. And so but those are those are
avoidable things. We'll keep looking at him and keep looking
at ways to uh to get better with it.

Speaker 6 (07:11):
Rick.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
We saw an update from halla Burton share via his
social media with him dunking using his right leg right
achilles dad. He obviously rupshured in Game seven of the Finals.
Your thoughts on the progress he's making through his recovery.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
He's doing great, He's great.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
I mean he was.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
He posted a thing dunk in a month ago two
I think that was off of two feet. I didn't
see the one yesterday. But it's all it's all very
very positive stuff, and it's, uh, it's a it's amazing,
you know, the way guys can recover these days with
some of the medical and rehab advances, et cetera, et cetera.

(07:50):
And he's in there bust in his butt every single day,
you know. So it's it's great to see. And uh,
you know, we'll look forward to having him back next year.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Pacers again in Toronto coming up tomorrow night. Then they'll
be at home. We get the tree lighting game on Friday.
It'll be Washington in Chicago coming up this weekend. Coach
in general, with Pascal this season and obviously the tyres
laws I would assume is impacting this how much more
just doubling or attention? Are you seeing around how teams
are defending Pascal Siakam Touns.

Speaker 4 (08:22):
I mean, you know, he's he's getting double team. In
the post, there was a play. He cut the ball
in the elbow last night and put it on the
floor and then there were two or three guys swarming
and it turned into a jump ball or something. And yeah,
it's it's uh, you know, we we've really gotta be
on point with our spacing to give him room to operate.

(08:46):
And and this is this is one of the things
that is important right now. We we gotta we've got
to play with the correct tempo for us by playing faster.
You know, we can, we can play in more space,
et cetera, but we can't. We can't do that at
the expense of unnecessary and controllable turnovers, you know. And

(09:12):
so in the case of Andrew and Pascal, I mean,
these are our two top guys right now, and they're
getting a lot of attention. I mean, you saw last
night Sark Thompson is all over all over Andrew and yeah,
really I thought to a point of excess. Referee didn't

(09:35):
agree with me, but it was it was over the
top with physicality, and so you know, we've got to
try to protect those guys.

Speaker 3 (09:44):
Coach will end of this and obviously happy Thanksgiving to
you and the family. You know, annually the pacers are
super out in the community this time of year. We
saw Aaron E. Smith I think took over for hosting
the the dinner you guys do there in the lobby.
I know Lloyd Pierce has got his Coat drive coming
up next week for you. The latest on Driving Dish.
We've talked about the food insecurities around Marin County and

(10:05):
even it's expanded outside of that here over the last
year or so. What's new is Driving.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
Dish Well, I've mentioned that, you know, last summer we
got an amazing amount of support from ownership. They put
ten million into the program to assure that it goes
on for a long time. It has expanded outside Indianapolis.
We've raised more money each year, and we've streamlined the

(10:33):
program so it's at its most efficient version ever and
we're very proud of it. And you know, this time
of year is when it's really important because Indiana does
not have a food shortage, but the people that need
food suffer because the logistics are challenging, and so driving

(10:56):
Dish facilitates the logistics thatpt bring food to people that
need it. So we're very happy about that and we
hope people take advantage of it.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Do you have a must have a must go to
on the plate of Rick Carlisle for Thanksgiving?

Speaker 7 (11:11):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (11:12):
Pretty much basic stuff. Just only request they have is
that's pumpkin pie is chilled? No?

Speaker 3 (11:20):
Chilled pumpkin pie? Are you a whipped cream action?

Speaker 8 (11:24):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (11:24):
Sure? Why not?

Speaker 2 (11:26):
Why not?

Speaker 3 (11:27):
That's usually the reaction right on thanks again?

Speaker 4 (11:28):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Why not?

Speaker 3 (11:29):
You know, at that point you might as well throw
that on top. Pacers up in Toronto coming up tomorrow
and again home games this weekend with Washington and Chicago. Coach,
safe travels and appreciate the time. Happy Thanksgiving.

Speaker 4 (11:40):
Okay, Likewise, I was taking it's the.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Best of the best from today's broadcast lineup instead. Replay
continues in a moment on ninety three five and one
oh seven five the Fan.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
This is instant today on Quarian Company, former Pittsburgh still
at former cult also and the Pride of Fort Wayne
High School Paul Harding High School. As a matter of fact,
Trey estis joining us on the program. Trey, how are you?

Speaker 8 (12:17):
And that Jake?

Speaker 6 (12:18):
I appreciate you shoutting out my Harding High School, my fellawahawks.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
You know I'm curious of this. Are you in the
Harding High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Speaker 6 (12:28):
Uh So something unique about my high school. It doesn't
exist the way it was when I was around. They
closed it and opened it up and made it into
some kind of charter school associate college. Still has the
name Harding, but with that came they're purging of all
things athletics. So to answer your question, there is no

(12:50):
Harding call of it. I mean, no, I'm not a
part of it. But I am an Indiana High School
Hall of Famer in football, So I'll take that.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Now. That impressive, by the way, I mean, honestly, you
know the I'm looking right here on the Wikipedia page
of Paul Harding High School and it lists four prominent alumni.
You are listed first, by the way, both you know, alphabetically,
and in the heart of all of those from Harding.
Would you like to guess the other three?

Speaker 6 (13:18):
Craig Riley, Jim Masters.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
Craig Riley is not that's the former produced center, right. Yeah, Okay,
he is not listed. That's not to say he can
go there, and he's not saying he's not prominent. He's not. Listen,
Jim Master is correct. Nineteen eighty mister, I'm sorry, seventy seven,
mister basketball. I think that's right, seventy six or seventy seven, right, yeah, no,
when he was at nineteen eighty, mister basketball. Sorry, okay,

(13:43):
you got two others Rotsmith, Yes, sail In Lineman, you
got it nice. Ringing up, ringing up? All right. I
want to begin with this and the time that you
were in the NFL. Did you have teams that went
through and what is the NFL player perspective of The

(14:05):
Colts are not in a situation tray where it's panic time.
They've lost two of three after a fabulous start. They
are still in very good position, but it's starting to
get real here in terms of their schedule. How much
do players feel that when media is talking about it
and fans what about players?

Speaker 6 (14:24):
Well, whenever you get to this part of the year,
there's always a sense of urgency, especially when you're starting
out so well like the coach have done, and they've
lost to granted, I mean they lost to us, and
then they lost to a very good defense in Kansas City,
so it wasn't like they lost to lesser competition. Although
I would argue the Pittsburgh Steelers weren't as talented as

(14:48):
a Colts and we got got through that game because
of all the turnovers, and I think the coach pretty
much lost that game. But to answer your question, I
think the players do feel we understand this is when
a lot of times, also you have these players incentives
coming in, whether they be individual or team related, they
start to rear their head now because you understand, I

(15:10):
have this many catches, this many yards, this many sacks.
Also I get a bonus for making it to the playoffs.
I get a bonus for winning so many amount of games.
A lot of this stuff is in people's contracts, a
lot of the players contracts, and so all that combined
does add a sense of urgency and a lot more
pressure as you get down to these last six to
seven games of the season.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
You know, and when you have guys, can that be
a disruption? Trey. I'm not saying with this cold S group,
just generically speaking in the NFL or as a professional athlete,
when you have guys on your roster, your team that
you know have individualized incentives heading in towards the end
of the year, and maybe you even say to yourself, yeah,
but to accommodate that gets away from the style we

(15:52):
need to do or whatever else does that ever come
into play in terms of like a friction.

Speaker 6 (15:58):
No, no, And usually don't players know we're not gonna
switch up our entire offensive scheme or do unless I
remember a couple of years ago, Hines Ward, when I
was playing, I said, a couple of years ago, so
like ten fifteen years ago, he had to get one
more catch or like ninety more yards to get to

(16:20):
a thousand yards to hit his bonus. And everybody actually
wants a guy like Heines Warner's team to give as
much money you can't. Everybody does, for that fact, want
you to be able to get your money, but not
at the expense of scheme, not the expense of doing
something out of the ordinary if the opportunity presents itself.
For Hines, we did like a little screen pads out
to the side to pick up the extra yard a catch.

(16:41):
I can't remember exactly what it was, and towards the
end of the game, when the game had been pretty
much decided. So you see teams do that, but not
at the expense of the team.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Now, Eddie just asked me this question. I don't think
he's trying to knock on lineman. But as soon as
you started talking, Eddie Garrison turns off to Mica and
looks at me and goes, what intead of would like?
What bonuses would alignment get? What would it be? Number
of snaps? Is that what it would be? The fewest
number of sacks allowed?

Speaker 6 (17:08):
No, because the sacks things are so subjective. What's attributed
to you as a sack may your coach or your
stack guy might not attribute to you. The quarterback goes
on to the ball forever and he gets sacked, even
though it's your guy, it may not be attributed to you.
So it's hard to really quantify that what's your fault
and what's my else's fuck? But you do get some

(17:28):
guys who get a sentence for percentage of snaps played.
Obviously you get in roster or in game roster bonuses
for every game that you're available, But for alignment and
centers are few and far in between. We only get
the percentage of snaps one and maybe like if your
team makes the playoffs, or your team rushes for so
many yards, or you're in the top ten rushing as

(17:51):
a unit, so some of those are involved, but is
not a lot.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
Number of wristwatches and or pieces of jewelry that you
received from quarterbacks over the court of your career.

Speaker 6 (18:03):
Jewelry or wristwatches.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
There's always that, right, There's always these guys like did
you hear like Earl Campbell got rolelexes for I remember
of his offensive line all that kind of crap.

Speaker 6 (18:13):
No jewelry that not that I recall. We did. Big
Ben would buy us suits and jackets, stuff that you
can actually wear over time, and it's out of style now,
but I still have my overcoat that he got us
Alan Fanica at the Hall of Fame guard I don't
know if you guys remember him, played for US, played
with the Jets, played for the Arizona Cardinals. He got

(18:33):
us mac laptops when they first came out, which was
pretty cool. And then got us this, uh do you
remember Tebow? Are you the old recording thing? He got
us one of those when they first came out.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
That was like the initial installment of like, yeah, you
could like rewind your television.

Speaker 6 (18:50):
It was like groundbreaking, right right, It was groundbreaking, it
was yeah, And so he got us it was a
whole separate device he had to hook up to your TV.
Really aging myself right now. Dang TiVo. But yeah, we
got cool little Nick Knackson gifts for Christmas. We got
some Tiffany stemware glassward from the Rooney's one time, So

(19:10):
no jewelry first a, but other stuff that was pretty valuable.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
I thought you said, do you remember t Bow And
I was thinking, Yeah, that's the mania that we all
want to just go back and erase, you know what
I mean, like rewinding eraser. Yeah, Trey, what is your
thought on Trey Essex? Is my guest Java House Peel
and poor guest Line, the Colts themselves and Daniel Jones.
You know you have watched this game. When I say
this game, I mean the NFL from a far more

(19:35):
you know, intellectual eye than myself of knowing kind of
in the trenches, maybe even being able to tell when
a quarterback is uncomfortable or I'm regressing. I'll say, for
lack of a better phrase, what has been your overall
assessment of the quarterbacking play of Daniel Jones. Let's say,
in the last handful of games versus the beginning or
first month of the year.

Speaker 6 (19:58):
If JT isn't running the ball well, he struggles when
the vault when that game is on his back and
he has to be the one to dictect thing, dictate
things offensively, he struggles. If the defense takes away his
first look. He can scramble, he can extend plays, and
often he will find some guys, but naturally going through

(20:19):
progressions and making plays and throws on time, he struggles.
And so I think we expose that two weeks ago,
and I think Kansas City took some of the framework
that we use defensively and applied it to their game.
You got to stop Jackson if you stop him at
Liminster office tremendously. And I don't know if Daniel Jones

(20:40):
is the quarterback that's capable overcoming a lack of a
run game.

Speaker 2 (20:44):
Did you see that at the beginning of the year
or has it only been almost of late where, for example,
the team he used to play for, the Pittsburgh Steelers,
the pressure that they put on him. Did that expose
Jones a little bit or open up a blueprint? Or
is that simply pitch Burg finally finding out defensively who
they are.

Speaker 6 (21:03):
Pittsburgh is doctor Jenell, mister higher and they were Whoever,
the good version of one of those is mister high
that's a good person. They were that versus the coach,
but they've been doctor Jenko every other week. So they
just happened to have a good game and the right
game plan. The fluster Daniel Jones, they did some things.
The number one thing that I mentioned before, they stopped Jat.
They stopped Jonathan Tayloring. Once you do that, you really

(21:27):
apreciate your successes as a defense. And that's not just
against Dangy Jones. That's against anybody. You stopped the run game,
but especially a team like any that's so dependent on
their running game. In that offense line, Daniel Jones has
done a great job of distributing ball. He's made Alex
Peers into a legit I think number one, number two
receiver doing that d ball well. I think he's doing

(21:48):
a lot of great things in that offense. But the
year you're seeing that defensive start to pick up on
the fact that if you get him off his first read, he's.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Going to struggle.

Speaker 6 (22:00):
If you put the game on his back, he's going
to struggle with Pittsburgh's did that tremendously and Kansas City
has success doing that as well. He didn't turn the
ball over versus Kansas City. At least he didn't have
a fumble to the affidian do any interceptions correct, but
they stopped what John Tello had eighteen carries for forty
five yards, and Daniel Jones wasn't really able to be

(22:21):
efficient in that pass game. Kansas City is a really
good defense, top five rushing defense, top eight or top
four scoring defense, top eight overall. So I mean they
did a really good job and I think that is
the blueprint moving forward. I don't think Daniel Jones is
a game breaker. He's a game manager. He does it well,
and I think Stiching has done a good job of

(22:42):
put him him in very for two of the situations
as far as where to go with the ball and
scheming guys open. Do you think those teams aren't working tray?

Speaker 2 (22:49):
Are those things that you're pointing out? You know? Are
these things do you think that have just recently been
exposed and discovered? Or are these things that you think
most in the NFL knew about Daniel Jones and it's
just now starting to show itself.

Speaker 6 (23:03):
I think this is what they know about him. I
think the NFL has figured Daniel Jones out. I think
I do think he's a talented quarterback and he's a
safe option for the Coast, especially when you look at
what Anthony Richard was for them, being the inconsistent quarterback,
inconsistent thrower and turn the ball over the way he did.

(23:24):
But Daniel Jones is not a secret. I mean, he's
been the league for now five six years. He has
developed some habits that are going to be hard to
break at this point in his career, even with what
Shane Steigen has been able to do to kind of exposed,
not exposed, but highlight his strengths, and I think he's
done a great job with that. But he is who

(23:47):
he is.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
At Tray Day seventy nine, that's tr Ai Trade Day
seventy nine, also the snap count show, Trey Essex joining
us on the program, Trey in conclusion and this one,
I'm to put myself out on a limb here because
i have a feeling that I'm going to ask a
question that I'm gonna immediately slap myself and go, yeah, dude,
how did you not know this? Who exactly was Paul harding? Dude,

(24:13):
I don't know who Paul hart is. I didn't know
at first. I was like, wait a minute, is he
like a governor that I didn't know about, or like
the pride of Fort Wayne? Is there? I remember one
time I asked somebody. I'm like, yeah, a buddy of
mine went to JMU. I go, now, who is James Madison?
He's like the president. I'm like, oh my gosh, of course,
how did I not think that? So so there's not
an obvious answer on who Paul Harding is. We're gonna
guess that he was like a school board member, right, I.

Speaker 6 (24:35):
Guess dude, I've never actually thought about that.

Speaker 8 (24:39):
That is.

Speaker 6 (24:39):
I got to look that up. And this is shame
that I've never even pose that question to myself.

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Well, come to the world of my neurotic insomnia tree.
These are the things that came me awake at night.

Speaker 6 (24:53):
I'm looking it up. He is some kind of well,
that's not our poet.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
There's an author. Yeah, I looked it up. There's some
author that wrote a book in twenty ten. I'm like, go,
that's not it, right, definitely not. No, Yeah, all right,
that's your assignment until we talk to you next time.
Find out who Paul Harding is.

Speaker 6 (25:06):
I'll have it for you.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
I probably all right, appreciate it. Trey Essex's joining us
on the program.

Speaker 1 (25:11):
It's the best of the best from today's broadcast lineup. Instead,
replay continues in a moment on ninety three to five
and one oh seven five the Fan. This is instant
replay earlier this afternoon on the Ride with JMV.

Speaker 7 (25:35):
Multi Sport all the Way on the Andy Moore Automotive
Group Hotline. Greg Rakeshaw, the pride of Lanesville, Indiana, Hallelujah
to the multi sport athlete.

Speaker 8 (25:46):
Well, thank you, John, I was one. I think you
were as you were one as well as.

Speaker 7 (25:49):
The green that was a half assed multi sport athlete.
I was there multi sport indeed. Now the David Bell stuff,
he was one of my favorites all the time around here, Greg,
you really was. He was fun to watch no matter
what he was doing.

Speaker 8 (26:07):
And for the greatness of David Bell as an athlete
winning a state championship in two different sports. Maybe the
thing that's most memorable about David to me is the
fact that with the class in which that he handled
Jack Kaiser winning mister Football when so many people around
here were losing their heads about it, and I said listen,
David the hell of a player. Jack Kaiser is too.

(26:29):
The thing you should be most upset about the fact
is that George car Loptis wasn't even a finalist. That
all three of those guys made the National Football League,
so I know David's career did not go as anticipated
or hoped. Again, you touched on the reasons from an
injury standpoint behind that, but the fact that all three
of those guys had great college careers are able to
make their living playing professional football shows that class was

(26:51):
pretty special in terms of high school football. Back in
the fall of twenty eighteen, Greg.

Speaker 7 (26:55):
I asked this question a little bit earlier. Do we
like it's a Friday night bucket encounter?

Speaker 8 (27:03):
I mean, there's college football takes over this entire weekend,
not really from a Thursday stamp on from a Friday
and Saturday standpoint. The thing with both of them having
the bye week this past week, I would been kind
of like, hey, why don't we just play the game
on Saturday and give those two teams Thanksgiving weekend off?
But that's not the way it's going to go, just
because you're not going to have that buy on a
regular basis. You don't get out of the habit of

(27:25):
from a coblish football fans standpoint, letting people know that
Thanksgiving weekend is rivalry weekend in the Big Ten. But
I guess, I guess what I would say is this, John.
You know, there was kind of some knee jerk reaction
when that game was moved to Friday night.

Speaker 4 (27:39):
We're going to the high school football.

Speaker 8 (27:41):
Well, there's literally not a window that it's not going
to be opposite one of the high school state finals
at Lucas Oil. So on a Friday night, the more
the merrier, let's go.

Speaker 7 (27:49):
I am definitely a knee jerker when it comes to reaction.
You know that to be true, Greg, He's understanding on
the Andy Moore Automatic Group Hotline. I'll double back to
the Bucket game in a second, but let's get the
high school football stuff. Friday, you get Meryllville New Pal
five A. We'll start there because that's a late game.
But certainly Newpal has had just an absolute dominant pass.

(28:13):
Does that maintain through this championship game Friday night?

Speaker 8 (28:16):
The good news for Newpal is I think having seen
to gets them prepared for Merrillville. You know, Maryville plays
a very good five A schedule because the Newland Conference
has Crown Point which is six A and a good team,
Lake Central and Portage which are six A and not
as good at the six A level, but a lot
of the top teams in five A they play in
the northern half of the draw. New pal schedule sometimes

(28:40):
isn't that strong, but they're so good, I'm not sure
it's thinking matters. The one thing that Newpal can accomplish
that has not been accomplished before, and part of this
is having a classification of thirty two or thirty three teams.
One third of the schools are ranked. Newpal wins this
game as Friday they're expected to, they would be the
first team team to beat nothing but ranked competition on

(29:03):
their way to state championship. Plainfield, Cathedral, East Central, Wilmington
South and Meryllville are all in the top ten. No
team has accomplished that. Newpal has that chance when they
are playing for that on Friday night, and John the other.

Speaker 4 (29:18):
Staff that I will throw at you.

Speaker 8 (29:20):
If Newpal wins this game, it would be the fifth
state championship for Kyle Ralph with his team being unbeaten.
The other two guys that have pulled off that feet
are Dick Dellahan and Bud Wright. Man, I think that
kind of sells you all you know about what Kyle
Ralph has done in a little more than a decade.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
As the head coach at New Palwa.

Speaker 7 (29:37):
Well, and that speaks to something else Where's my Dick
Dellahan call. I don't think Di's called in the show
the last two weeks. He has called in Greg the
month of November twice and both times, as you would
well know, absolutely tremendous. So I'm thinking member one, yeah,
but thinking maybe we've smarked Dick Dellahan call a little

(29:59):
bit later on today hopefully.

Speaker 8 (30:01):
Well he might be back down in Florida by this
point in time.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
I'm not sure.

Speaker 8 (30:05):
Maybe that's why he has it called in a couple
of weeks, but I will I mean, I've got several
Dick Dellahan stories. There's this radio partner for several years
from the fans on Friday Night. But here's the one
I will tell you. Remember he just do this big
production to kind of get the sales staff all fired
up for the upcoming season, right, and we would take
the sales staff off site do something cool et cetera.
We tried to find different speakers for him every year,

(30:26):
and one year it was Nick Dellahan, and literally every
member of our sales set, this is in my pd
days of the fan got up and like shook his
hand and gave him a hug after the end of
the speech. So not only could he make football players
run through a wall, he can make our sales staff
do the exact same.

Speaker 7 (30:44):
One of the greatest dudes of all time. And yeah,
I really on a daylight today, you know this to
be true. The app is much greater than the two
signals here anyway, So hopefully he's listening Florida though, it
would be all good, all right, So Lures Greg. They
ended up derailing the Miles McLachlin train. We saw that

(31:05):
last week. Meantime, Cascade and Gibson Southern had just an
absolute Saturday night classic environment. These two teams meet up
in three A at three o'clock Friday.

Speaker 8 (31:17):
Yeah, I mean Lures again, the Slayers of Knox and
again Lures just like you know they modern day maybe
do a lesser degree.

Speaker 2 (31:25):
Ends ringing.

Speaker 8 (31:25):
Who's playing the two A final teams that benefit from
playing large school competition. You know you can throw the
records out because you know how good of schools are
going to play on a regular basis. Cascade almost in
a one year fashion is kind of the new pow route.
And what I mean by that is this cas Gate
did not play the greatest schedule this year. They're part

(31:46):
of a new league of Amona and Athletic conference that
really had Southmont. It was a solid team. You know
had we both that's good every year. None of those
teams came close to touch to touch in Cascade. Their
best two games the seas in the first two games
of the season, which were against Monrovia and Danville.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
The Danville game.

Speaker 8 (32:04):
Was competitive and it was also a harbinger of what
maybe that Gibson Southern game was going to look like
because Danville played both of those teams the first two
weeks of the season. Cascade loves to run the wing tea.
They love to run place quickly, and I think having
played Gibson Southern that will help prepare them for lures.
There will be more athletic but Gibson Something was pretty
dog one good. I think that three to a game,

(32:26):
like a lot of the games this weekend.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
John is almost a toss up, Greg.

Speaker 7 (32:30):
You know the first thing I think about when I
hear or see the word Cascade when that would be what, well,
now it would be an ADM artist, but that starts
with the K, but no Cascade and its sheeting action.
Remember the sheeting action of the dish Washington. I never
understood what sheeting action is, and maybe this Cascade football

(32:50):
team could take over that particular term.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
They got some sheeting action going on there.

Speaker 8 (32:56):
Would you like me to explain to you as to
why their same as Cascade? What that was the name
of the police. It has nothing to do with Cascade
shooting action.

Speaker 4 (33:06):
I shoot you not.

Speaker 8 (33:07):
This is exactly how it played out. So they wanted
to have the names of the towns that were formerly
their own high schools. Yeah, when they merged, I want
to say, back around sixty three or sixty four. So Clayton, Amo,
Stylesville makeup Cascade CS hence the name of the Cascade

(33:28):
to debts.

Speaker 2 (33:28):
That's beautiful right there.

Speaker 7 (33:29):
Greg Graystraw with the ultimate Cascade knowledge on the Andymore
Automotive Group plotline, South Putt and Pioneer familiar territory for Pioneer.

Speaker 2 (33:38):
Greg.

Speaker 8 (33:39):
Correct, it's been a few years again since the heydays
of Jack Kaiser and just after that. But Adam Barry
can really coach and again Pioneer, they expect to make
deep runs in the tournament. South Putnham has been knocking
on the door and they have been kind of held
up by some parochial powers. First it was Lutheran, they
were in Lutheran Sectional for a couple of years in
one eight. Then last year going down to Providence and

(34:00):
you know Providence was thought to be you know, kind
of cannon fodder from North Judson San Pierre, turned out
to know they were the state champs that South Putnham
ran into down New Albany last year. South Puttenham has
been building for this moment for quite some time. They
have the second leading rusher in the state John who
is only twenty three hundred yards back of Miles McLoughlin

(34:21):
if she tries to pass him. In terms of coming
up in Friday's game again John, I think that's a
toss up type of game. But I know Chuck Soerels
team at South Putnham is really really good. But because
they're playing Pioneer, I think that's going to be an
outstanding one. A game to kick things off Friday eleven am.

Speaker 7 (34:39):
All right, Saturday two A and Dan Duran and Brownstown
Central at eleven am. How about four A Dwanger and
Ron Colley. This has been from somebody that knows and
loves the folks that Ron Colley just one hell of
a run for the Royals.

Speaker 2 (34:55):
Has it not been this season? Correct?

Speaker 8 (34:58):
When Ron Colli and Dwinger played in week number one,
this was a new game on the schedule. For years,
Ron Collie and south Ford had kicked off the season
against each other. That game goes away ron Kyllie plays
one of their Catholic brethren in the North. When that
game finished three to nothing, John, I'm not sure many
folks thought, you know what, maybe we'll see this game
in the state championship begin ron Kyler was beaten by

(35:20):
Shatard in week number three, thirty three to eleven Schatard
had frankly shown no signs of weakening. Maybe the fact
that ron Collie handled East Central in week number nine
should have tipped us off that, Hey, maybe there's something
special that Sam Otley is putting together down at Ron Collie.

(35:41):
And here they are for the first time in five
years playing for a four A championship, but again the
unique nature of that game being so close and so
competitive in week number one. Stop if you've read this before, John,
I think this is going to be a really competitive
state championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 7 (35:56):
While about six a the Oscar of Fron who seems
like an all time great dude. I did not know
until Dan Osborne told me that his grandson. That's outstanding,
Dan and Sarah's grandson. Westfield and Browns Westfield being there,
especially after that play versus Carmel is pretty interesting too.

Speaker 2 (36:16):
What a great six a matchup.

Speaker 8 (36:18):
Absolutely, and it was a pretty good matchup last year.
The state champion games a really good match up in
week six. And I think Westfield is a better team
than they were in Week six because they were so
young at the offensive skill position. You know, they're playing
now the younger brother of last year starting quarterback in
the Melvine kid that's a sophomore, but Aiden Grabowski is

(36:38):
still getting snaps as a senior. And frankly, what Josh
Miracle and Westfield is doing offensively is our most a
carbon copy of what Brownsburg did last year. Between Stevens
and Frye rotating at the quarterback position. There's a lot
of talent on this Westfield team and a lot of
young men with last names you might know, like Ballard

(37:00):
and June that all have ties to the Indianapolis Colts
and Justin Snowstun Kayden is just a freshman and he
is really good at the tight end position. Brownsburg is
just so stink and solid. There's not a weakness on
that team one to twenty two and on special teams either.
Nothing flashy. They just go out and get it done.

(37:22):
So here the refrains, John, I expect this to be
a really competitive state championship game, and I am lucky
enough to have the call of both the five A
and six A game from the video side on the
IHSAA Champions Network coming up on Friday and Saturday night.

Speaker 7 (37:38):
Well done, my brother too, and just hold off for
the next month and the Jammie takeover will be back Wednesday.
This year is New Year's Eve.

Speaker 8 (37:46):
When Fernando Mendoza wins the Heisman. I am calling you
on Saturday night, December the thirteenth, and just wherever you
are asking you to play Fernando from Abba the way
you did for me on Set night.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
So thank you very much for that. Yeah, brother, appreciate
you man. Have a great week see aboud it.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
