Speaker 1 (00:00):
A lot to get to this week.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
First, we're gonna bring in Bart and talk about the
Jets partying ways with Steve Wilkes a defensive coordinator position
and elevating Chris Harris to takeover play calling duties. Then
we're gonna look at the big picture with Brian Baldinger,
and finally previewing Jets Saints this weekend in Superdome.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
We meet anybody in the world, and I think we're
gonna win.
Speaker 4 (00:23):
Next Sundays wonder Dan, wait, put your Steve belts on
and getting ready for the ride?
Speaker 1 (00:41):
All right, Bart? Your reactions? On Monday morning, Aaron Glenn.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Told reporters that he was relieving Steve Wilkes from defensive
coordinator duties and he's elevating Chris Harris to the play
caller for the defense.
Speaker 5 (00:54):
I mean, I feel like maybe this is an opportunity
to see what Chris Harris can bring to the table.
I mean, he's a former player, played on some good defenses,
have some opinions you look at. You know, played the
same position as Aaron Glynn, and maybe they're more aligned
philosophically about how they like to go about attacking defenses.
(01:16):
Gives them a short period of time, but it gives
him a period of time to see if he can
change something, especially if he's able to come up with
some good defenses. When you talk about what the opponents
are going to be, you're going to have the saintss
playing better than anybody that's you know, beat two of
the best teams in their division.
Speaker 6 (01:32):
You know, that's just hoping to win the division.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
And then you have the Bills in the in the
Patriots teams that are fighting for the divisional title and
seeding for the playoffs. So I mean, you know, it's
an opportunity and you have to take advantage of him
whenever you get them.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
All right, So, Harris, if you are in that defensive
medium room as a player, what do you want to
hear from him?
Speaker 5 (01:57):
I mean, I want to hear the Hey, I'm gonna
put everybody's in a position to their strengths, to what
they do well. I'm not going to I'm not askually
to be superman. I'm just actually to do your job
and I'm going to make sure that it's very clear
what your job is and I expect you to perform
at a high level because that's why you're brought here.
And if you're not performing at a high level, then
we have to find somebody that can't.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
The good thing about this situation too, is that Aaron Glenn,
of course former defensive coordinator with Detroit Lions, so he
see that he's gonna be helping him out with the
game planning during the week. But he made it clear
that hey, Harris is calling the plays and he did
it in the preseason.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Puts a lot of pressure on Aeron right to come
up with the game plan. It's more on this plate.
I mean, I'm sure he felt comfortable with giving everything
to Steve Wilkes because it allowed him to be a
head coach of the team and not just the coach
of a unit. You know, you see some coaches that
decide to do it. You see Ty Bowles, We see
(02:59):
it really often on the offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 6 (03:01):
But that is tough.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
We watched Obrich struggle with that last year and you know,
time management being able to do certain things. But he
felt that was the best thing in the right decision.
So you know, we have to take him at his
word because at the end of the day, this goes
on his personal record, not anybody else's.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Before we get the ball.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Your thoughts on this coming matchup against the Saints.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
There's a couple of parallels here.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
You got rookie quarterbacks on each side, Tyler Shuck over
there with the Saints, twenty six years old rookie, and
then on the opposite side for the Jets, of course,
Brady Cook, undrafted free agent making his start in the
National Football Leager, his first start last week with the Jets,
becoming the first UDFA rookie to start for this franchise
(03:45):
since nineteen seventy three. And then first year head coaches
and Callen Moore and a.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
Of course, it's going to be a interesting matchup because
of all the things that you mentioned, whether the coaches,
the parallels between the teams and where they seemingly are.
You know, the Saints are coming off beating two of
the top teams in their division, and you know, we
thought that maybe they were going to tank for the
(04:10):
number one pick or being a running for the number
one pick. But if they keep at this pace, they
have an opportunity to maybe win seven games, and what
accomplishment that would be for Kellen Moore.
Speaker 6 (04:21):
The Jets have to understand that, you know, playing on
the road in that dome.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
Even when the Giants were coming off of playing well,
they went down to New Orleans and lost as well.
That that is a clear home fill advantage. Playing that
dome with a crowd, noise and stuff can be deafening.
You got a really good fan base, you know they're
going to have to make sure you know that they
have to understand they have to match the intensity because
(04:47):
I feel like, you know, the Saints feel good about themselves.
They won two games in a row, feeling like they
can be this can be the beginning of something that
can lead into next year. And Chris Olive is playing
better than anybody football right now. I really am impressed
with what he's done the last couple of weeks. And
even in that Panthers game, he put on the clinic
all the big plays that you know, you put on
(05:08):
the sheets of plays when me to look.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
On, Yeah, you know they're going to try to get
him the ball down yeah, and then he still was
able to succeed.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
Yeah, and a lot of those well cover zeros and
he still found ways and Shuck was right on point
and knowing where to go with the football.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
What do you think of Cook?
Speaker 2 (05:23):
This is two final ones what do you think of
Cook in his first start after getting reps with the Ones,
he started six for six.
Speaker 6 (05:31):
Well, I thought he was fine. I thought I thought
of some good throws.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
I mean, you talk about the touchdown pass I and
I Mitchell, You know that was a cover zero great
play design by motioning Isaiah Williams into the backfield, which
made them trying to rock and roll the corners and
the safeties down and when they released two to the
open side, that communication both went on breeze didn't communicate,
And that's what that's what the shifts and motion is
(05:54):
all about, to cause indecision and also force communication pre
snap and post snap.
Speaker 7 (06:01):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
You know what I really enjoyed that Mitchell and John
MATCHI Isaiah Williams. They combined for sixteen catches and all
New Orleans your favorite spot to go?
Speaker 1 (06:11):
And are you? Are you a ben a guy? Are
you like the Hurricanes?
Speaker 6 (06:15):
What do you do?
Speaker 5 (06:16):
I'm cool with Bennet's. But I think they got a
place called Mothers or something. When you go get the
Poe Boys, I think that's a famous spot that you
can go down there and get some good soul.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
Fool.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
You know New Yorkers, they show out in full force.
They're gonna be down in New Orleans this week.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Of course, you see what it looks like outside here
part of time, man, of course don't of course you
better not come back with no bees. I know you
had a crazy night coming back with Baldy Knick.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
The Official Jets Podcast is presented by Kendra Scott, the

where team spirit meets personal style. Baldi didn't wait to
hear from you, So we're start early this week. We're
(07:02):
taping Monday morning. You just got back from Kansas City.
How was the snow there, buddy?
Speaker 8 (07:08):
It was light, it was real light, but it was
very cold, very cold.
Speaker 7 (07:12):
I mean it was probably nine degrees that kickoff, But
you know, the sun came out and I don't think
it affected the players or the fans. I thought, you know,
the Chargers went in there and took care of business.
And so obviously the loss of Mahomes is it's not
just the loss of the Chiefs. It's a loss for
the whole league. When you have players like that that
go down.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Yeah, plenty.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
To get to regarding the Jets, this is the official
Jets podcast, but the Jets are remember the National Football League?
Speaker 1 (07:38):
What did you mean? What do you make of the
day yesterday?
Speaker 2 (07:42):
You were there in Kansas City when you see Mahomes
go down. That guy's a legend. He's going to the
Hall of Fame. He's done unprecedented things. And then you
see him on the turf, and then obviously we get
designation later that it sounds like he's going to be
out for a long time.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Huh.
Speaker 7 (08:00):
Well, when I saw him, well, I saw him needed
so much help to get up to move around. Then
they had a video of him, you know, on our
cameras going into the locker room. I mean, I knew
he was hurt, but honestly, ea, it looked like just
a routine tackle, the way Mahomes has been tackled for.
Speaker 8 (08:18):
The last eight years. It didn't look it didn't look terrible.
Speaker 7 (08:23):
But then to find out, you know, the torn a
cl it's it's you know, it's it's devastating. We need
we need great quarterbacks in this league for it to
be a great league, and he's been the best, you know,
since he got into this business. So it's it's a
big loss for Kansas City. They're out of the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (08:38):
But you know, like people are saying, you know, Tom
Brady tore his a cl you know, in the first
quarter of a first game one year, and he came
back and put together a legendary career. So that's that's
what we're all expecting from Mahomes, although you know it
might not be until maybe the middle of next season
before we see him again.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Yeah, it's something else.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
And then the league December games, you're always watching what
happens as far as injuries are concerned. And then the
Packers suffer a big one as well because Michael Parsons
goes down.
Speaker 7 (09:11):
He's the best defensive player and he's the most unique
player in the league. He had already forced a fumble
at RJ. Harvey's, you know, mits on a third and
one play and stop he's just there's they don't have
any replacement, nobody does, Uh, the Packers.
Speaker 8 (09:27):
That's a big loss.
Speaker 7 (09:28):
It was a loss to Denver, you know, that set
him back. But at the same time, that was their
chest beast where they could really get after quarterbacks, and
it's just it's devastating. It's devastating the Green Bad its
devastating for Micah was a non contact injury on grass.
You just don't expect anything like that, just changing direction,
(09:48):
and uh, you know, it just goes to show you how,
you know, how fleeting all this can be for any
given player at any given time.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Yeah, it's a great point because the Jets eventually want
to be playing meaningful games in December and anywhere. And
you know, it's a great reminder of listen, Oftentimes it's
not necessarily the most talented teams that win down the stretch.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
It's the teams that are the healthiest.
Speaker 7 (10:12):
No question, no question about it. And if you just
look at Denver, you know who won that game. I
mean the quarterback runs all the time, scrambles all the time,
hasn't been you know, hadn't been nicked at all. They
lost their left guard this year, and other than that,
they're almost completely healthy. And so you know, it's one
of the reasons why they've won eleven in a row
(10:33):
is they have stayed healthy throughout the year and they've
gotten reinforcement backt They missed Sirtan for a little while,
but they've got depth at that position. Now he's back
playing great football. But you know, it might be the
healthiest teams that are standing might be the teams that
you know, keep moving on right now as we go
through December and get ready for the postseason.
Speaker 8 (10:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Unfortunately, the Jets are in totally different situation. Obviously three
and eleven going down to Jacksonville and they face a
Jaguars team that was really hum and offensively. I want
to start on the other side of the ball. Brady
Cook gets to start his first one in the National
Football League, benefited from that week of practice with the Ones,
becoming the first undrafted quarterback, rookie quarterback for the Jets
(11:18):
to start of games.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
That's nineteen seventy three. What did he make of his performance?
Speaker 7 (11:23):
I thought he was pretty good, be honest with you.
I mean the touchdown drive on the second drive. Obviously
they went three and out, they missed the fourth and one.
They come back to next drive, they go eight play,
sixty five yards, he throws a touchdown pass Davey Mitchell.
I mean that was great quarterback play. I thought the
two interceptions, the last two interceptions one de Lazard in
(11:45):
the end zone and one to Smith. I don't know
what the receivers are doing. I don't know what Brady're
supposed to do. He's throwing into a spot hoping that
the receivers are going to be there.
Speaker 8 (11:54):
Maybe that's just lack of timing, lack of trust, lack
of practice a long time.
Speaker 7 (11:59):
But I thought he got the ball out of his
hands pretty good. You know, the blitzes and how they
sacked him a couple of times, you know, I mean
that's just protection issues up front, and uh, you know,
and seeing that. But I thought he saw the field well.
I thought his arm looked good.
Speaker 8 (12:16):
You know.
Speaker 7 (12:16):
I thought there was a lot of good things to
take away from what Brady Cook did in that game.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Ball he did.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
You think one of his most impressive throws that I'm
gonna be quite specific here, but you talked about how
much you enjoyed that first scoring drive was that third
down where he's rolling out to his right and he
finds Isaiah Williams for a big chuck Gayner.
Speaker 8 (12:34):
Yeah, it was good play. It was good play.
Speaker 7 (12:37):
I thought that, you know, on the I think it
was design rollout and then you know, Isaiah sat down
right there. You know beyond the sticks that I thought
that the throw was right where it needed to be.
It was a two receiver route and Isaiah did what
he was supposed to do on the play.
Speaker 8 (12:52):
He continues to impress in a lot of different ways.
Speaker 7 (12:55):
But I thought that was a you know, it was
a big chunk play that they needed in that spot,
that drive alive.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Baldy Brady said after the game that that was a
play that worked at during practice. Of course, the touchdown
to Ed and I Mitchell, what do you make of
how decisive he was there. It wasn't like there is
no hesitation. He knew where he was gonna go and
he let it rip.
Speaker 7 (13:17):
He did let it rip, and you know, you look,
Ad made a great catch because it was a little
bit high and a touch behind him. But he didn't
have no fear of throwing that ball. You know, they're
down fourteen nothing right there.
Speaker 8 (13:27):
They need something to happen, and you know that's what
you have to do though in the red zone. You
can't hesitate. You got to be decisive.
Speaker 7 (13:34):
You got to see it and then you just gotta
let it rip, like you said, And I thought he
did all those things on that you know, It's just
a slant route from the left side, and I thought
the offense line did a good job of protecting him.
He had some he had some good vision to the route.
Sometimes you don't always see it, and I thought he
thought and he paid it off, and it was probably
(13:55):
you know, it was one of the highlights of the
day in the game where you know, obviously he got
away from him, but offensively, I thought finishing that drive,
I thought that was really important.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Isaiah Davis gets on the board there in the second
half with the touchdown himself.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Was the Jets final points of the game.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
Really blocked well and h he showed his explosion on
that touchdown.
Speaker 7 (14:17):
It was his first rushing touchdown of the season. EA,
it's twenty four yards. Like a lot of teams, it
was if you count Andrew Beck as a as a
tight end on that play, it's really you know, you've
got Rutger and you've got Jelonnie Woods and you've got
you've got Beck and and really they blocked it perfectly.
It's a great combo block with Membo and Rutger, you know,
(14:39):
to seal the end and to get to the linebacker.
And Isaiah Davis, he read it on the move and
then you saw the bursts you know, to really finish it.
You know that the line did their job to get
him into the secondary and then to beat the safety
to the end zone. It did show a good burst.
He was leading rusher in the game on on his
nine carries, got those first rushing touchdown twenty four yard run.
(15:02):
You know, it was really well done at the point
of attack. And then just the overall explosion that that
Isaiah showed.
Speaker 8 (15:10):
That was pretty impressive.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Baldy Jets a continuing to operate without Garrett Wilson. As
we know, we talked about Mitchell a little bit. It
seemed like him and Brady had very good chemistry from
the onset and then where you also encourage that hey match,
he got into it as well. And then how about
Isaiah Williams. We talked about him a little bit already
(15:32):
as far as that early pass catch. But this guy's
a weapon. I mean, we're seeing it from special teams.
But I like what the Jets are continuing trying to
do with him offensively.
Speaker 7 (15:44):
I agree, you know, I mean, he's probably you know
a bit just because of his size, he might be
a little limited in the passing game. But regardless he
finds the opening, you know, whether you give it to
him on a handoff or you know, you find him
on a third down throw. He's impressed. Obviously, his return
game both bunts and kickoffs is amongst the league's best,
if not the league's best right now. So I think
(16:05):
they found a player there. I had n I Mitchell.
I mean the route he ran ea for I think
it was a twenty two yard comeback. The route he
ran and the timing that he had with Cook that
was that was a great route. That's a great route
because Newsom Newsom is a good corner to turn him
(16:25):
completely around and come back to the ball that was.
He's he's very fluid. He really he's a good route runner.
And I remember that year that he came out. I
would talked to our our draft expert at NFL Network,
Daniel Jeremiah yesterday, and he had a d Mitchell as
(16:48):
his fourth best receiver in that draft. And you know,
the way the way that he moves at his size, like,
I think he can really be a pretty special player.
Speaker 8 (16:59):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (16:59):
He looked excited to be out there, regardless of the record,
to score the whole thing. He looked excited, and he
looked like he's really enjoying this opportunity to kind of
showcase some of his skills right now.
Speaker 2 (17:12):
Man, that's awfully exciting, and it's tough because you're looking
for silver linings here on this December day where it's
freezing outside and the Jets lost by double digits, But
there really are if you'll look beyond the scoreboard here,
especially offensively, you got that foundation set from left to right.
What did you make of the Josh Meyers extension heading
(17:35):
into the offseason, because you know now that I mean,
we'll have to see what happens with Simpson, but from
left to right, I mean you could have everybody in tech.
Speaker 7 (17:47):
Yeah, I continnew it was important. It really is important.
A lot of teams, a lot of good teams have
had that this year. You know, Denver has been pretty
healthy left the right across the board, left guard went down,
but I thought, you know, obviously Josh Myers a tipman
had a competition to start the season, and Josh wanted
with the injury to Ali Vera Tucker tipman went the
(18:09):
right guard and they've kind of solidified themselves in there.
But Josh has played good I mean, you know, the
one thing that you could see now in addition to
the play up front is I think they had one
penalty the whole day. You know, I think Membu had
a little false start. But other than that, you know,
that was a real issue early this year, and and
(18:31):
and and really Aaron Glenn said that we're going to
clean this up. And they have cleaned it up now,
Like the penalties are few, holding calls, free, stap penalties,
Like they've gotten that stuff cleaned up. That's an improvement,
that's something you can build upon because that's how you
have to play the game.
Speaker 8 (18:50):
Jacksonville played a game like that.
Speaker 7 (18:51):
Their motion shifts very clean, very and you saw the
result with a hot quarterback. But you know, I thought
we're seeing that offensively, I sold just one penalty on
the offense. Maybe I missed one EA, but there wasn't
many and so it was a pretty clean operation all day.
Speaker 2 (19:08):
We say it every week, Baldy, but little margin for
error for this team right now that's been decimated by injuries.
You go back to Isaiah Williams, he takes that punt
return to the house. He would have been the first
Jet in franchise history of three punt returns for scores,
albeit for a penalty that comes back on Threy Brown.
They were doubling the gunner there, unfortunately, So the Jets
(19:32):
have a touchdown taken off the board. You mentioned that
fourth down early in the game where ag.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
Decided to go forth.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Jets don't get it short field and you're down by
a couple scores. Again, So right now, the past couple
of weeks, the Jets have just been chasing. And again,
you know, it's tough offensively because you probably got a
feel right now a lot of pressure that when you're
running into a team with Jet like Jacksonville or a
(19:58):
team like Miami who's in a groove offensively, you gotta
feel offensively like you gotta score every time or you're
gonna fall behind a ball.
Speaker 7 (20:07):
Well, I'm sure that that was. You know, down seven nothing,
it's fourth and one. It's an influenced play. It's a
hit or miss. Everybody runs a fly suite. It's just
it's a hit or misplay. You know you're not blocking
Drayvon Walker on the play, and you know if he
gets sucked in by the motion and the movement, maybe
you run.
Speaker 8 (20:27):
Right by him.
Speaker 7 (20:27):
I mean I've seen the Rams run that in the
Super Bowl on fourth down, and it was the most
important play in their final drive to go win that
Super Bowl.
Speaker 8 (20:35):
Look, I don't disagree with the call fourth and one
right there.
Speaker 7 (20:40):
If you're in a playoff hunt and you're down seven
nothing and your team is really good, maybe you punt
that away and play field position.
Speaker 8 (20:47):
But you know the Jets should go for that. I'd
just like to see him maybe try a different way.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
All right, Listen, the Jets have a ton to correct
as far as mistakes on the defensive side of the ball,
But can we take a second here as far as
the secondary is concerned.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Big picture, let's look at the landscape, Baldy.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
This is a team that started Brandon Stevens on the
outside with Sauce Gardner and the opener Michael Carter. The
second was playing nickel, and then you had Andre Cisco
and Tony Adams. Since then, you've traded Sauce Gardener, Michael Carter,
(21:28):
You've had Andre Cisco be placed on into reserve.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Yesterday against the Jacks.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
While I'm dating myself, I'll just say against the Jaguars,
you lost Tony Adams in game to groin injury.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
You lost Isaiah Oliver in game to a.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Knee injury, so you were playing with Malachi Moore and
Dean Clark.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
There at the safety position.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Yep, you traded for Jarvis Brownlee, who was the guy
was stepping in for Michael Carter, the second Brownie's on
injuryers right now, so you are playing Jordan Clark there
at the nickel position, at the linebacker position. I don't
even go up a little bit, but my focus is
a little bit more on the secondary right now. Listen,
(22:14):
these guys are not making excuses. This is the National
Football League everybody deals with. I'm gonna say it. As
far as the personnel changes for this secondary, it's been
a lot.
Speaker 8 (22:26):
Yeah, it is. I mean, it's all that for anybody.
Speaker 7 (22:29):
I mean, in some ways, it almost looks like a
preseason game with some of the guys that are out there.
You got to really go through your roster to kind
of find out, you know who some of the guys are.
Figgers is playing, you know corner right. You know Brian
Thomas Junior, you know he's the elite player.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
And that's a great pointball because as Thomas is on
injury reserve too, he was another young guy.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
You were getting a great look at who.
Speaker 7 (22:52):
And he he was. He was looking good and promising too,
you know. And so hey, look, I mean it, they
just got the injury bug. I played on a team
one year in Indianapolis. We had nine guys break their legs.
Nine broken legs, you know, just everybody was in the
training room. It just it just happens some years. And
so they've they've gotten the injury bug. The good thing is,
(23:13):
whether they like some of these guys or not, you're
getting a look at it. The pass rush isn't good
enough to overcompensate for all the losses and all the
because so much of secondary isn't just talent, it's playing together.
It's communication. It's just knowing how to play with each other.
I've talked to so many pros in this league where
(23:34):
you know, a real veteran on the back end of
your defense can cover for a blown assignment.
Speaker 8 (23:39):
They see it. They just don't.
Speaker 7 (23:41):
They don't have that sort of experience together to be
able to do anything like that. And so look, I
mean Travis etn you know, I mean, he beat the
underneath coverage, you know, for three touchdowns, and Quincy gets
caught in a man coverage and he runs by him.
I mean, that stuff's gonna happen. But that's part of
part of the issue right now. With so many new
(24:02):
guys back there, you know you're gonna get those type
of results.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Pauldy, I'm really high on Malchai Moore.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Though he had ton tackles against the Dolphins and nine
tackles against the Jaguars, Stevens made a great play as
far as that force.
Speaker 7 (24:15):
I thought he was gonna score. Yeah, I pumble recovery.
I thought he was off and running.
Speaker 2 (24:19):
Talk to me about more. Because he's been just a
consistent force back there.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Man.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
I love the way he plays, his physicality and the
speed and he just gets after people.
Speaker 7 (24:31):
And like all safeties, he's very interchangeable. All good safeties
right now. You know he can play at the line
of scrimmage. He can play, you know, in the center field.
You know he can play in the deep path. You
know he they made he made a play yesterday. He
was the free safety where I think it was Jacoby
Myers on a quick slant and uh, man, if if
(24:52):
he doesn't come up there and make that tackle like
he does, and he opened field Jacoby's gonna take it
to the house, and he was very sure. You know,
that's there's a lot of space there that you've got
to close quickly. You got to see it quickly. And
I thought his eyes were really good than his tackling
in the open field was good. There's a lot there's
a lot of good things happening out there. Obviously the
(25:13):
Jets have not taken the ball away. But to see
that deflection by Brandon Stevens knocking that ball out and
they get his eyes on and get his hands on
it right away like that, that was that was also
pretty impressive. But it week in, week out, right now,
he's been a standout on the back end of this defense.
Speaker 1 (25:32):
Yeah, he really has.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
All right, let's take a break and then we're gonna
preview Jets Saints at the Superdome.
Speaker 3 (25:38):

Speaker 1 (25:56):
What do you make of this weekend's matchup?
Speaker 2 (25:58):
Between the Jets and the Saints are going to have
two rookie quarterbacks likely gone up against each other, because
we don't know yet this Monday morning, but I would
assume Brady Cook still under center for the Jets, and
then Tyler Shuck has been doing some impressive things there
down to normal.
Speaker 8 (26:15):
Really impressive. I've watched all his games.
Speaker 7 (26:16):
I haven't watched yesterday's victory, but you know the win
the week before against Stampa. I mean, first of all,
he's big, you know, he's I met him in training
camp this year.
Speaker 8 (26:28):
He's six four, six five, but he can.
Speaker 7 (26:30):
Really run, he can really extend plays, just much like
what you saw from Trevor yesterday. He's not his big
as Trevor, but he's he has that type of features
to him. But he throws the ball very well. And
Kellymore is a good designer of offense. He got a
bunch of young backs. They got a rookie left tackle,
you know, they got a young right tackle right now.
(26:51):
But they're they're moving the football. They're really moving the football,
and they're playing the game of confidence. They could have
easily beaten the Dolphins three weeks ago. They lost by
a field goal. At the end of that game. But
you know, they've won two in a row. Right now,
I think Shuck has played four and he's improved in
every game he's played. It doesn't make many mistakes right now,
but I believe that he's going to be a guy
(27:14):
that they could build around. He lost the battle in
preseason with him in Spencer Rattler, But honestly, when I
saw him in training camp, I thought he would be
the starter, just because beside his movement, how he saw
the field. You know, he's a twenty five year old rookie.
He's got a ton of college experience and it shows
when he's out there on the field right now.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
So that's interesting because I know Jets fans.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
Of course, they're looking towards April and the draft because
the Jets have a lot of capital. We've talked about
that a lot, and we will continue to talk about
that once we get to the offseason. But the Saints
right now, you're saying, hey, maybe internally they think they
have their guy because you look at them during that
top ten positioning. I've not looked at the draft order
(28:00):
this morning. We just got back from Jacksonville late last night.
First person I'm talking to you too right now. Other
than my family is Brian Baldinger.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
But Baldi. Uh.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
So you look at the Saints and they're a set
here late in the year. Do you think they think
they have their guy now?
Speaker 8 (28:19):
I really do. I believe it now.
Speaker 7 (28:21):
I haven't talked to Kelly Moore, you know about him
since the season started. I know he was very high
on him when I talked to Kellen in the preseason
at training camp. But I'd be shocked, honestly, the way
he's playing that they would spend a high first round
pick on a quarterback.
Speaker 8 (28:38):
I just would be.
Speaker 7 (28:40):
I think he's everything that you're looking for right now.
I think he's proving it on a young, very young
team across the board, and I think he's proving that
he's that he could be the future. Maybe some people
don't don't believe it, but they're not watching. I've watched
every one of his games over the last three weeks,
and he's improved each week. And I think he has
(29:03):
all the requisite size and athletic ability that you're looking
for at that position. I don't think the Saints are
gonna be in a position. I don't think. I don't
think they're gonna go regardless what quarterbacks are there. Yeah,
I don't think that that's gonna be their their their folks.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Yeah, and that's gonna have impact on the Jets potentially
obviously when.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
We get to April. So, uh, what's a trademark of
a Kellen Moore offense?
Speaker 2 (29:27):
Because what we've seen the last few weeks Miami and
Jacksonville and then you go even back to Atlanta. Uh,
some of these teams have been getting after the Jets
in the run game.
Speaker 1 (29:39):
But you mentioned at On.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Yesterday, the running back was really effective out of the
backfield in as far as pass catching et on.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
He's so explosive.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
So how do you think Moore is gonna try to
attack the Jets defense?
Speaker 7 (29:56):
Well, I mean going back to is you know, winning
the Super Ball with the Eagles last year. I mean,
he's gonna feature the run and he is in New Orleans.
I mean, they're gonna find ways to run the football,
very creative in the run game. A lot of young
guys that people kneel, guys that people don't really know
much about. The fullbacks are gonna get carries. A lot
of different receivers will get carries. You know, you'll see
(30:17):
a lave with some fly sweeps. But regardless uh that
that's gonna be the foundation they're gonna it's not gonna
be just shotgun and uh and drop back. They're gonna
be under centered.
Speaker 8 (30:29):
They're gonna be play action passes UH to take their
shots down the field. UH. But it's a it.
Speaker 7 (30:36):
It is a very specific it's a very West Coast
principal offense where the ball gets out quick, a lot
of quick throws, just reading triangles. UH, coverage dictates where
the ball goes, and he's asking his quarterback to make
very quick reads in progressions, and Chuck has proven that
(30:56):
he's capable of doing that, you know, within two seconds
of getting the ball.
Speaker 8 (31:01):
I think pre snap.
Speaker 7 (31:02):
Reads and indicators with motions that are gonna indicate you
know what what the coverage might be, and then the
quarterback wants the ball snap to nowhere to go with
the ball?
Speaker 8 (31:12):
Baldi.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
Does bris Hall reach the thousand for the first time
in his career this weekend in New Orleans?
Speaker 1 (31:18):
He's in the low nine hundreds right now.
Speaker 8 (31:22):
Say it again.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Does Brice Hall reach a thousand for the first time
in his career this weekend in New Orleans. I gotta
get the official telly for you, Baldy, but I think
he's like it about nine oh two or nine oh
three right now.
Speaker 8 (31:36):
Uh, this is a pretty good run defense. Okay, they
they play a three to four.
Speaker 7 (31:42):
Uh, You've got Chase Young and Cam Jordan right now,
stand up outside linebackers, probably the biggest set of outside
linebackers in the league. And then they just you know,
they just got a bunch of big dogs inside.
Speaker 8 (31:54):
They're gonna challenge, they'll challenge bries.
Speaker 2 (31:57):
So Breese is right at one hundred, Baldy, and you
got to Mario Davis there as well, to all mainstay.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
Man, he's had an incredible.
Speaker 8 (32:05):
Career, unbelievable, unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (32:07):
He still leaves him and tackles, I mean every single year,
and he looks agels like he just enjoys playing. Obviously
you know him from the Jets and his time here,
but I mean he still knows how to find the
football and they protect him really well to go make
those tackles.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
If Cook is the guy, what do you want to
see from him at the dump?
Speaker 7 (32:28):
I thought Brady played better than I thought I would
see him. I'm not the interceptions like I said, I
don't think two of them are his fault. I just
want to see growth, you know, I mean, Tyler Shuck
got a chance to play. I think four weeks ago
was his first game, and he's improved every week. You
just want to see improvement. You know, the touchdown throw
(32:48):
to ad Mitchell was really good. Yeah, his movement was
pretty good. Like I'd like to see him continue on
that arc. You know, if he threw one touchdown pass
last week, let's see him throw two in the dome
this week.
Speaker 8 (33:02):
You know, he uh, he played in the SEC. Now
now I saw him in the hula ball. I wasn't
impressed overly because of his size. I didn't think he
had the type of size looking for. But you know,
we also know that that's not the only indicator of
what a quarterback is going to be. I like my
quarterbacks bigger. But he played in the SEC and he played.
(33:22):
You know, he was thrown.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
Past this to Luther Burden, who was the star for
Chicago yesterday. Member was his right tackle. Like he's used
to seeing guys that are NFL players, and so he
went down to LSU and played. You know, he's he's
played games in the Dome before, Like, I think this
is not going to be too big. It's gonna be proud.
Noises Osi a factor. It's a holiday season. The Saints
(33:45):
have won a couple of games. They're playing the spoiler
right now. I played down there at Christmas Eve when
they had nothing to play for and the place was
backed and it was rocket. Yeah, they're gonna go in
there to the party and to see if they can get
a third straight win. And and so I'm I'm feeling
like they feel very confident about this. This would be
a great opportunity to go in there and and stop
(34:05):
the uh, you know, stop the holiday partying that the
Saints are having right now.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Yeah, and then maybe the Jets can have a couple
of hurricanes on a way out Hubaldy.
Speaker 8 (34:14):
Yeah. Yeah, stop at O'Brien's. You get your stuff on
the road.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Hey brother, Uh, Monday is a big film room day
for you, so we appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (34:24):
Take uh real quickly.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Just give people some insight of what your day looks like.
Because you got back from Kansas City at what time?
Speaker 7 (34:34):
And then well I got back from Kansas City at
two in the morning and there was eight inches of
snow in my driveway, so I had to shovel my driveway.
Speaker 8 (34:40):
Just to get my car in the driveway.
Speaker 7 (34:42):
So I went to bed at three, and I got
up at six, and I was here at seven watching
your game, and so I'm gonna try to get through.
I tried to watch every game its entirety, uh, between
Monday and Tuesday. So I hope they get to six
six more games here today and then I'll do the
rest tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
All right, brother, Well we're gonna have you join bart
Scott next week.
Speaker 8 (35:06):
Okay, you got an e A.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Thanks buddy,
