Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Sidetracks, the podcast brought to you by Keys
weekly newspapers. I'm Gwen Filosa. I'm digital editor at the
weekly down here in Key West Florida. My guest today
is Todd Newton. He is the host of The Price
Is Right. The live show tour that is on its
way to the Coffee Butler amphitheater in Key West. Uh
(00:22):
We talked recently and here's the interview, Todd Newton. Thanks
for joining
the podcast today. Um You're on your way to Key
West for a live. The Price is Right. Show. Tell
us all about this.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Gwen, we cannot get there quickly enough. I, I tell
you as, you know, uh Key West has a special
place in my heart, but the price is right live
stage show. We are in our 23rd year uh, of
touring North America. Uh, and that is all thanks to
wonderful audiences like the folks there in Key West.
(00:56):
Um, but this tour is the biggest and by far
the best we've ever done. And we're just thrilled to
be bringing a, a part of America's favorite game show
down to the Keys and giving folks the chance to
win these fabulous prizes playing the games that they love
from television.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Now, I grew up with the price is right. We
all watched it. I, I liked TV, when there were
fewer choices but we would watch Bob Barker. And even
as a little kid I've always been really good at
this game. Todd. I've never bought an appliance for real.
I live like a college kid, but I'm good at it.
But tell me why the price is right. Why does it,
(01:36):
what makes it so appealing to everybody?
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Well, that's a great question and I, I think it's a,
it's a two part answer. Number one. It's exactly what
you said. It, it is such a piece of Americana quit.
I mean, we all grew up watching this show and,
and no matter what city we're in, we always have
people coming up saying, you know, I remember staying home
sick from school and, you know, eating a bowl of
(02:01):
soup to,
to feel better and then that music would come on
and it just kind of got your blood flowing a
little bit. So it's always been there. It's like a
favorite pair of old blue jeans that just always fits
no matter what phase of life you're in. You know,
I grew up watching it with my grandmother and I
watched it in college and watched it with my Children
(02:22):
when they were younger. So
it's just something we passed down. I say the price
is right is right. Up there with apple pie and baseball.
Of course, I'm a little partial
Speaker 1 (02:32):
but the price is right. What's it like to host it?
And again, just if there's someone that's totally, well, there
might be people who have never heard of it. It's
this amazing show where you come on and you, you
tell me how it works.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Well, it's, it, it just real quick. The second part
of my answer to your previous question, I think it's
because it's several different games in one. That's why people
love it. It's more than just trivia question and answer.
It's plink o and cliffhangers and the Big Wheel and
the Showcase and Golden Road and it's in the bag
and all of these games that we all practice for unknowingly,
(03:08):
you know, just going grocery shopping, you're practicing for, for
your ST
Yeah, you're doing your homework, you're doing your homework. But
for me as host, you know, it, it's such a
privilege because I was, uh I'm very, very proud to
say that I was mentored by Bob Barker. He's the
one that taught me how to be a game show host.
And uh he's the one that put me in the
(03:28):
position over two decades ago. So II I have great
pride in, in every single performance. And the one thing
Mr Burt taught me was to play the game through
the eyes of the contestants. You know, I'm, I'm very
fortunate Gwen in the sense that I get to play
plink
every night. I get to spin the wheel every night. But,
but for the contestant, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
(03:51):
It's kind of like when you have kids all of
a sudden, Christmas is really cool and fun again. And, uh,
you know, birthdays are exciting again when you see it
through their eyes. So that's how I host the show.
But the, the games are real, the price
prices are real. Yes, you can win fabulous prizes. And
the great thing about the show is that everyone, every
contestant is chosen completely at random. So everyone that comes
(04:16):
to see us at the amphitheater will have the very
same shot of getting on stage. So that's, that's really special.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Oh, that's how it works. If you, if you come
to the show, you, you may get called up.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Correct? Yeah, you, you grab your ticket and you either
register in advance. You know, they usually send out an
email to all the ticket holders. You just click on
it and you're registered or you can just scan a
QR code the night of the show at the theater
and all of our contestants are chosen completely at random.
It doesn't matter where you drove in from, it doesn't
(04:48):
matter where you're sitting.
Um, you all have an equal shot and we call
more people down to contestants row than they're able to
do on television because we're a longer show. Uh, we
have no commercial breaks. And we just, uh, you know, listen,
especially at that amphitheater. We could, you know, underneath the
stars right by the water. We could stay there
all night. Nobody's gonna tell us to leave.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
It's an, it's an amazing event that, that the live
tour does come down all the way down to Key West,
Florida and that you, you have long, uh, long term
ties and a connection to Key West. Tell me about that.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Well, I look, my father was a, a major league
baseball umpire, so he trained in Clearwater. And uh you know,
we used to take our excursions as, as a child,
as kids. My brother and I down to Key West,
I took my first steps uh as a baby on
the beaches of Key West. Uh I, I, we went
there throughout my entire childhood and into my twenties. Uh
(05:50):
I started going alone and having the kind of fun
a young man can have in his twenties in Key West.
And
uh I've just been going there multiple times a year.
I mean, 1012 times a year II, I had an
apartment in the historic district uh throughout my thirties. And
then when I got married had Children of my own,
we would make Key West our, our destination every time
(06:12):
we left home. And uh and during the pandemic, I,
I spent most of the uh of the lockdown there
in the Keys and
I can't think of a better place to have done it. And, uh,
now I, I have a home on the west coast
and back on the, in the Keys as well. So,
we've got a lot of friends, a lot of familiar faces,
a lot of family coming to that show and it's
gonna be a homecoming for me and it's the second
(06:35):
to the last show of the tour. So for me
that's gonna be the grand finale. I can't think of
a better place to wrap it up and, or a
better place to have the next day off which we do.
So I'm excited about.
I love
Speaker 1 (06:47):
that you have this, it's, it's part of your personal history,
part of your faith.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
I mean, look gwen, you know, as well as, as
anyone that once the keys enters your soul, it never leaves.
And I can't think of any place I would have
rather have spent, you know, this huge chunk of my
life than enjoying those sunsets and, and just the people
and the sense of community and the pride of the island.
(07:11):
It's just,
it's something I take with me no matter where we
are in the United States. It's a, it's a spirit,
it's a, it's a mood, it's, it's just uh an
energy and, you know, people notice it and people are
envious of it and I've turned a lot of our
crew members on to Key West. And so this is
definitely the show we've all been itching to get to. That's,
that
Speaker 1 (07:31):
is so great to hear. And yes, you summed it
up perfectly. II, I love when
I've been here 12 years, which is still pretty new for,
for Key West, you know, locals and natives. But when
people visit and they're able to grasp that. Oh, my gosh.
This is about island life. Family fun. Like, enjoy your life. Yes,
we're a party town. This is a great place to
(07:52):
party and come and do whatever you want. But you
captured it where there is a spirit here that is
its own
Speaker 2 (08:00):
without question. I mean, I've, I've met hundreds, if not
thousands of people who cannot wait to get to Key West,
whether it's again or for the very first time. But
I've yet to meet anyone who said I can't wait
to get off this island. I can't wait to get
out of here. Not, not something, not something you ever hear.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Exactly. And I, I, and it's just a unique place.
I live in,
in New Orleans for a long time. And then he
moved here and been very fortunate with the fun places
and it's Key West is a place you can walk
down the street and say, you know, good morning to
someone or hello. And that's, that means so much to
me that it, it's a place that eye contact isn't,
you know, dangerous or weird.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Well, and it's, it's the kind of place at least
for me that when I wake up every morning, I'm just,
I'm already smiling and my coffee tastes better. The food
tastes better. Handshakes seem a little firmer and more meaningful.
A hug really means something there. Uh Conversation is true
and authentic.
(09:03):
Um words have meaning there. It's just, it, it's the
kind of place that just brings out the best in
all of us. It brings out a side of everyone
that we all have. It's in there somewhere but in
other places it's just not as easy to reveal and expose,
but in the keys, it was, it was designed
for that. And you know, whether someone is, is religious or,
(09:25):
or not, I mean, if you don't, if you don't
feel something special when you're in the keys, then uh
then you need to, you need to look a little
harder within yourself because that's, that's where you're gonna find it.
Speaker 1 (09:36):
I like it. I like it. Uh Todd when it comes,
are there any tips that you, you know that you
know of for the prices? Right? Because to me, it
really takes some skill in kind of everyday living and
knowing what things cost or knowing what um It's not
just a guessing game. Like let's be honest, I'm not
when it comes to like a dishwasher, I'm like, whoa,
(09:58):
I don't know. It could be like that could be
too grand.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
I think the uh I think the preparation is unconscious.
You know, I, I think it's, it's the kind of
thing that we're burning on our brains without realizing that
the sizzle is happening. You know, whether, you know, when
we just, when we run to the store to grab
milk or run to the store to grab uh something,
you know, to prepare for dinner that night, you're looking
(10:22):
at prices up and down the shelves and it's registering
somewhere in there. So when we bring out an item
for someone to bid on,
there's going to be at least a little bit of,
of background knowledge there. So, so my suggestion is watch,
watch the show in preparation to coming to see us
and just see how the games work because the majority
(10:46):
of the games are split right down the middle with
luck and chance and skill. You know, and, and we
want people to win these
games. What a lot of people I think don't understand
is these games are not designed to trick you or
to trip you up in any way. I mean, we
want to see you win. You know, I'm not, I'm
not buying these cars or paying for these trips out
(11:07):
of my own pocket. So I, I want you to
win and, and I want you to walk away happy
and I want to make this memory with you and
I want you to have something to tell people. We
love it when
we meet people at the shows whose mother or grandmother
or grandfather had been on. The price is right with
Bob Barker 25 years ago. I love, love hearing those
stories and I, I love looking out into the audience
(11:30):
and seeing three generations of families out there just really
enjoying this together. So
maybe watch the show for a, you know, you've got
a couple of weeks till we get there, watch the show,
see how the games work and then when you get
up on stage, leave all your inhibitions out there in the,
in the lawn area. And, uh, just be ready to
have a good time. It's a once in a lifetime experience.
(11:50):
So let's, let's grab it together.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
And there is, um, uh, a love of watching the,
the Bob Barker shows and there's a, a local bar
in town and they play the, it's always on, I
guess it's on, I don't know what channel it's on,
but the Game Show Network History or something.
And my friend is very young. We walked in and
he's just like, oh, and after like five minutes he
was transfixed and rooting for these people in the denim
(12:15):
pantsuits and the women with the huge hair, he's rooting
and like, it's like, I don't know how much these
mints cost, but I know it's, and it was just
cool to see. We actually loved it and it, I even,
I walked in and I was like, I don't know
if I need to see and we were both just
like sitting there wrapped, like watching.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Well, you know, it's funny you say that because uh
Mr Barker used to always say that the key to
the success and the longevity of the price is, right.
Uh Number one, you, you have to have great contestants
which we always do at the live show. And number two,
if they're watching on TV, you get
(12:53):
how to get the folks at home, yelling back at
their television in the first minute or two. You know, so,
and you notice he come, you know, he used to
come right out and bring out the first item up
for bid. And then instantly you're saying, you know, $400
or higher, lower or if you're really, really savvy to
the price is right. You're saying $1 if you think
everyone else is overbid. So if, if you've ever yelled
(13:16):
back at your television, watching the price is right. You
definitely wanna come see us because uh it's time to
put those skills to use for you.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
And I do have to say what I love about
watching it because I grew up with the these shows. Obviously, I,
I love that there's presenters of the prizes like when
it's a bedroom set, it's like there's so there's a
nice lady there going look at this. I that's important
to me that there's a personal touch of, of um
I'm half joking, but no, but when I see them.
(13:44):
I'm like, have we, we're missing out on this, on
certain other games where there's someone that guides us like a,
like a flight attendant.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Exactly. Right. Exactly. That's a great way of putting it.
And I, I think that, um, you know, people relate
to everyone that they see on the show, you know,
especially during the, the Bob era. I mean, it, it
happens today with Drew and Rachel and George Gray and
the whole group. But, but especially with the Bob era,
(14:13):
I mean, you, you, you mentioned the name Rod Roddy
and everybody knows who Rod Roddy was. You know, the
probably the greatest game show announcer in history with the
Sparkly Jackets. And
there was Diane and Janice and Holly and you can,
and you know, these just like Bar uh Mr Barker himself,
you know, these people were in our living rooms for
(14:34):
decades and we enjoyed them from the comfort of our
own couches and they just, they were so nonthreatening and
so relatable and uh I, I think that, you know,
to circle back around to what you and I were
talking about at the beginning.
I think that's what endears the show to so many
people for so long and, and the fact that it's
(14:56):
going to be right there in your backyard, you know, that's,
that's been the key to this show that we're all
so grateful to work on, you know, for, for me.
I mean, I've been here since the beginning to, to,
to be able to do anything in the entertainment industry
for over two decades is such a gift in Amer
in a miracle. And,
um, I'm just so grateful to people to come and
see us and hire a babysitter and pay to park
(15:18):
and buy a ticket and give us all that energy,
you know, rooting for people that they don't even know
on that stage. I mean, that's not only does that
encompass what is so special about the price is right,
but it's, it's kind of that, that Key West vibe too,
you know, just cheering people on hoping that the moment
is magical for them.
Speaker 1 (15:37):
Well, we're all excited in Key West for the price
is right. The, the live version coming down here to
the coffee butler, amphitheater, Todd Newton. Thank you for hosting
uh this, this, this live tour, so, so amazingly and
thanks for taking the time today. Gwen,
Speaker 2 (15:54):
such a pleasure to talk to you. We'll see you
all
Speaker 1 (15:56):
