Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back. It's the Keys weekly sports. Wrap your number
one Monroe County prep sports podcast in the world. I'm
Sean mcdonald. I'm here with Tracy mcdonald and we're gonna
bring you everything going on from Key Largo to Key
West and everything in between. What's going on, Tracy? I,

Speaker 2 (00:20):
I'm just shocked
we're number one in the world now. I feel like
we've really made a name for ourselves.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Well, we are, I think it's safe to say we
are the only Monroe County prep sports podcast in the world.
So we are the number

Speaker 2 (00:34):
one. We're also last in the world. Is that what you're,
let's not focus

Speaker 1 (00:37):
on that? We focus on the positive, let's focus on
the positive,
a lot of positive stuff this week. You say, I
know that it's a big week here in Monroe County
for boys basketball. It's a big rivalry week. Um On
Wednesday of this week, marathon is at home, playing against
Key West High school and basketball and Friday is the

(00:59):
battle of the Keys boys basketball style marathon
versus Coral Shores at Marathon boys basketball. What are some
of your memories, Tracy from those basketball games from Coral
Shores Marathon from Key West to Marathon. Key West. Coral Shores. WW, what,
what rings in your mind when we talk

Speaker 2 (01:19):
about that? All right, this might get the, the 10
or seven however many listeners we have riled up a
little bit.
Call us Homers, but obviously our son played on, on
Marathon's basketball team a few years ago. And some of
the biggest things I remember were going to the Coral
Shore Gym and I believe we put up like 100
points on them. It was awesome. Um There were dunks,
it was amazing. Um But props to Coral Shores, the

(01:41):
thing I remember most about that is um they had
Dr Prosek the is a veterinarian,

Speaker 1 (01:47):
not sure.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
Robbie Pro's dad. Um He went to um great uh
football player, basketball player, big guy for Coral Shores. His
uh his dad, Dr Pros had paid for everybody to
get into the event for free. So I'm like, woohoo,
I don't even have to pay. So that was a
big thing for me. I remember that. I know that
you saved your

Speaker 1 (02:04):
$5 has

Speaker 2 (02:05):
nothing to do with sports. But,
you know, we had a great showing there, put a
lot of points on Crow Shores. Now. They're, you know,
they're back doing it to us now. That's how the
things go. I, I remember marathon beating Key West in
Key West. That was huge.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Um You almost got thrown out of that game. Remember

Speaker 2 (02:20):
that? Wasn't me. That was, um,

Speaker 1 (02:22):
that was, remember they threatened to throw you out of
the game if you didn't stop yelling
in the, in the person's ear, I think, or something. Oh,
I thought you

Speaker 2 (02:30):
were supposed to yell at a

Speaker 1 (02:31):
game. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Well, we were yelling for, well, you know what,

Speaker 1 (02:34):
maybe your yelling was key to marathon winning. Yep. I

Speaker 2 (02:37):
think my yelling was key to marathon's wins. So that
should be, have an asterisk in the record books. But
that was one of my favorite things to, um, to
see in key sports. And, you know, I do like
to
see every, you'll see guys like playing in the, the
junior leagues. You'll see guys playing down there in, um,
is it Douglas gym? And then with the pal, the
Police Athletic League and you'll see them and they're like

(02:57):
knee high and they're adorable and they're wearing all their
drip and they've got their sweat bands and the one
legged tights and then you blink your eyes and they're
62 and dunking and they're
men and they're, you know, they're just phenomenal athletes and
it's great to see them from four years old and
then they're, you know, 1415, 18 to see that whole
cycle is, is a beautiful thing in this small community.

(03:18):
So those are some of my better memories. How about you?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
But the worst part is, is now we're old enough
to see those players. Kids do the same thing. I
don't even want to talk about that.
Um My favorite thing is, I don't know, I was
really excited about Key West going up to Crow Shores
this year and getting the big win in basketball. It
was the first time in two years that Crow Shores
was not going to be the, the kings of the county,

(03:43):
as we like to say,
uh beating marathon and beating Key West, which they've done
in basketball for the last two years. It was the
first time Key West beat Coral Shores in the last
four games. So I thought that was a big win
for Key West puts Key West basketball uh at the
top of the charts where it spent so many years

(04:03):
in Monroe County. And, and I thought that was a
big

Speaker 2 (04:05):
one if Marathon wins his home game they're playing this
week though. Um We've got like, you know, not really
any defined king.
That's true. We've got a battle for the king. This
is like some historical drama we've got,

Speaker 1 (04:18):
if marathon could shock the world. And I know this
podcast is probably coming out on Thursday. We're recording this
right before marathon plays Key West.
If marathon could beat Key West shock the world beat
Coral Shores, shock the world, then there could be a
running for King of the Keys. There's gonna be an
asterisk for 2023 2024. If that happens

Speaker 2 (04:40):
right now, it's not undisputed. That's for Sure.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
No, no.
And then we're, to be honest, uh, uh, is, I'm
still hoping that Key West High School and Coral Shores
can make up the home game at Key West that
they did not play.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Sure. That would, that would help, that would help settle things.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
I think the weekly should just sponsor maybe a one
night tournament of all three teams and they could play
double elimination and we just figure it out. That's a
great idea. We need to get the
other people at Keys weekly to put that

Speaker 2 (05:15):
together. Not me though. I don't want any part of that.
I just want to watch, I don't want any responsibilities
except writing about it afterward and watching it because

Speaker 1 (05:21):
that would be fun. Then we could talk about it too.
So we are actual work. Our plates would be full
when it comes to all of that. Yeah,

Speaker 2 (05:27):
we're the think tank that brought this idea up. It's
a great idea. So now we're, our role is pretty
much done. Someone else needs to pick.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Well, let's talk about real basketball. And what happened last
week and there was a lot, we're still talking about
rivalry boys. Let's talk about rivalry week girls. It's going
on tonight. Um, Key West is coming up to marathon,
but last week marathon went to Key West. And what
a barn burner it was. How did you

Speaker 2 (05:52):
go into overtime?

Speaker 1 (05:54):
6967
marathon with the win late and it was a very,
very pressure packed game. Um
Elena Eubank puts up 21 for Marathon, Daisy Williams and
Marty Kilbourne of 17 each in the victory and that's

Speaker 2 (06:16):
big for girls basketball. They don't tend to score quite
as many as the boys. So when you're scoring 21 1717,
that's a lot of points for girls' basketball. They, they
meant it that night. You know, Key West wanted to
win Marathon, wanted to win. They gave each other one
heck of a game.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Marathon boys last week they split the week winning once
against Jeb 70 to 55. Janel Garcia scored 19 for
the Fins. Carlos Escaz had 11 8th grader Jack Chapman
put in 10
on January 19th. They lost to Monsignor pace 67. 42.
It was close into the fourth quarter and then it

(06:51):
all fell apart. Xavier Grant had the hot hand for
marathon scoring 12. Sophomore day, Sean Holmes had 11 points.
Junior Laon and freshman Josh Koehler had six each in
the loss. Marathon plays its final home game on Friday
against Coal Shores. How does Marathon high school have an
eighth grader playing Tracy

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Marathon. High school has 2/8 graders playing what
marathon high schools? Grades six through 12 and they're the
smallest high school. And you know what? Um I know
Carl Shortz is struggling with some injuries. We haven't talked
to Dexter in a few weeks, but I imagine, you know,
this late in the season, they're, they're struggling too. Those
guys can go to their JV bench and dig deep.
We don't have AJ V. Well, our JV is also

(07:30):
playing varsity half the time. So when we dig deep,
we're digging down to the, the middle school and we
happen to have a couple of very talented eighths
graders who, you know, they, they step up and they're
doing great and it just, it bodes well for the
future marathon that they're getting these reps in now with
the offensive system and they get the scheme and, and
they're really catching on. I think it's gonna be amazing

(07:50):
in the next couple

Speaker 1 (07:51):
of years. I heard that those eighth graders that are
playing varsity, they're also playing on the, on the middle
school team at marathon. Is that correct? The

Speaker 2 (07:58):
undefeated thus far
middle school team?

Speaker 1 (08:01):
I also heard that the middle school head basketball coach
is incredibly talented. Did you hear that

Speaker 2 (08:06):
too? I heard that he's actually pretty overrated quite

Speaker 1 (08:09):
a blow. Well, I'm the middle school basketball coach. So
now I am offended that

Speaker 2 (08:14):
we offend people on

Speaker 1 (08:15):
the show. The Lady Keynes, Coral Shore High School lost
to ransom Everglades on January 1637 to 18,
that ended a six game win streak. But don't worry,
the win streak started over two days later against Riviera Prep,
getting the great win by forfeit, giving them the 10th

(08:35):
win of the season.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Something else happened with Coral Shores this week

Speaker 1 (08:39):
big happened and you're talking about girls basketball, not scoring.
And you said that, but Coral Shores just had what
senior Brooke

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Man Dozy, she scored her 1/1000 career point

Speaker 1 (08:54):
1000 points, 1000 points. Basketball. That doesn't happen, that does
not happen too often. Um Maybe, perhaps in the, in
the last uh 10 years I could remember boy scoring
1000 points in high school. One would be uh Monty,
what was his name?
Lamar?

(09:16):
And then the other one being Jamal Quaal scored 1000
at marathon. Nelson Roja scored 1000 at marathon. And this
is over the last 1213 years. Lamont Woods, Lamon Osborne.
You're right. Lamont Osborne at Key West High School was
1000 point score. So really, it doesn't happen that often.
So props to Brooke Man Dozy and

Speaker 2 (09:37):
she's, she just got it by being so consistent. She
didn't have a huge rips of like 50
points that you see in the NBA. She was consistent
and she worked hard for many years and she added
them up the hard way and it's, you know, her
talent is, is wonderful. She's a great team player and every,
every coach, whether it's her dad or not, the coaches
have great things to say about her and she's, she's

(09:59):
just a wonderful person all around and we wish her
the best, maybe not in the marathon Carol SHS game
in that game. We wish everybody the best, everyone gets
the same.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
I don't know what you're talking about now, the Hurricanes,
I got you. The girl, the girls basketball at Coral Shores.
They're not playing any more regular season games at home
this year. Um, but they might have another home game
when they get to the district playoff. They're getting ready
to get to their district playoff to see if they
make it to the FHSA A state playoffs.

(10:33):
Crows Shaw's boys lost a pair last week, a close
one at home against Palmer Isaac Holmes scored 16. Isaac
Rivera put in 13. Donovan theory added six in the
4943 loss, which would be their final regular season home game.
They lost on the road to Westwood Christian 5876 and
the Hurricanes will be in marathon on Friday, January 26

(10:57):
at seven for the battle of the Keys boys basketball
style getting ready for that. So everybody come on out
seven o'clock. Um,
the Conks down in Key West big showing at the
Atocha Island basketball tournament. We covered that last week in detail.
Go back if you want to hear it. The Conks,

(11:19):
which is the story this year for them, unfortunately, scheduled
to play three games last week, but issues with their
opponents scheduling shaved that down to just one. So last
week they're supposed to have three, they played one. We
touched base with Dexter, touched base with Key West high
school admin
and basically what was going on is that there, the
other schools in Miami, one of them was just double

(11:41):
booked where they booked two schools at the same time.
On their end, another school had uh an admitted, the
head coach wasn't gonna be able to come down to
Key West for the game, so he didn't feel comfortable
sending his team without him. So it's just been
bad news as far as uh the Key West five,
you know, five people on a basketball team. I just
gave them that the Key West five. I'm proud of that,

(12:04):
super proud of that. So let's do that one more time.
So it's been a tough year for the Key West
five as far as getting basketball games. What do you think, Tracy? I,
I

Speaker 2 (12:13):
feel like maybe five have actually been canceled so we
don't really
go with that. So it

Speaker 1 (12:17):
could be both, both things could be the five basketball
players or, or the five games that have been canceled.
How about if more get canceled? What are we gonna do? Well,
there is

Speaker 2 (12:26):
the sixth man award in basketball so we can

Speaker 1 (12:28):
change it. I'm confused again. So Key West High School,
they ended up playing one game. They traveled to Somerset
Silver Palms. I'm gonna tell you right now that team's
legit
marathon went up there and played, uh Coach Murphy told
me all about them. They got, it's like a real
basketball team. They got like 68 dudes 67 dudes. They got,
they got a team, they got marathons,

Speaker 2 (12:48):
got eighth graders and,

Speaker 1 (12:50):
but this is about Key West. Key West went and
they only lost to the Stallions by three points. James
Osborne scored 14 with six rebounds. Tremaine Scott and Cameron
Roberts had 12 apiece for the Conks in the, in
the 5855 loss.
Key West High schools up on the road last night.
You know, we're recording this on Wednesday game on uh the,
it's coming out on Thursday. Key West is in Marathon

(13:14):
on Wednesday and they will not return to Bobby Menendez
gymnasium until the regular season closer on Friday against B
A Boyd Anderson. So let's break this down. Um
Bobby Menendez gym in Key West who's Bobby Menendez. He

(13:35):
is a,

Speaker 2 (13:36):
he's a long standing principal down there who, who really,
you know, the Conks love him. He's a great guy.
I remember maybe, maybe 15 years ago, right when he retired,
they had this wonderful cheer. I just remember Mr
Menendez and I saw them. I could picture the motions.
I don't remember any more of the cheer, but I
thought that is amazing if you can retire and the
entire cheer squad makes a cheer up with your name

(13:59):
in it. Then you know what? You're, you're something

Speaker 1 (14:02):
that was great. Now, I'll give you my story. Bobby
Menendez was a student at Key West High School,
um, early seventies. He was a great football player, I
think he was a linebacker. He earned a scholarship to
Florida State. He was a great player at Florida State.
He comes back to Key West High School and he
teaches and he coaches football in the Key West high

(14:22):
glory days, the speedy neal days, you know, the going
to the state championship days, you know, the, the days
when the stadium was full and, and coach Menendez was
one of the coaches on staff. He became
uh principal at Key West High School. He was beloved there.
And then he actually moved up to the district level
for years. And then there's a great story. I'm gonna

(14:45):
get the year wrong. I'm gonna say it's about 1996.
Key West High School has an opening for a coach
and they bring in a gentleman from New England, he
was from New England and he ran the wing T
and I can't remember his name. It was not him.
He was there for seven games and the new coach

(15:07):
and the team was zero and seven. And one of
those things, I guess he just decided during the season
to leave the program. It got too much. Oh, and seven,
the Conch fans and rightfully so were going crazy. They
could not stand it.
The coach left
coach Menendez from the administrative building comes in, takes the

(15:30):
team over,
restores the conk pride, brings them back to their old ways.
They start the season. Oh, and seven. They finish the
season three and oh.
And he continued in administration. He retired and, uh, upon
him retiring from Monroe County. That was right around the
same time that Key West High School got the new

(15:51):
gym and they named it Bobby Menendez gymnasium. Well deserved
everyone in Monroe County who worked with him. Loved him.
A great guy. I, I can't begin to say how
much I respect him. I think he is still living in, uh,
what county? Volusia County?
That's where he went with Peg Smith to work. Now

(16:11):
we're getting in the weeds with old names. I'm rambling.
Let's go back to sports, but that's why it's called
di at his gym. Now, we talked about the boys.
How about the Lady Conks? We did talk about them
taking on neighboring rival marathon going into overtime, but ultimately
losing at home. The Conk Lady Conks traveled to Naples

(16:32):
and took on Baron Collier.
The Conks unfortunately lost 5630

Speaker 2 (16:38):
two. They're, they're looking for a win and I think
tonight is when they're, they're hoping to get it. So
come to marathon. Those Lady Conks are like they're going
for it because just lost by two in overtime last week.
So this is, this is their best opportunity to get
in the win column this year and, you know, marathon
certainly doesn't want to lose to Key West. Key West
doesn't want to lose the marathon so, too bad, you know,
you can't get a time machine because I bet that's

(16:59):
gonna be a great game.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
You're right. And, you know, that's the beauty of this
whole thing because really in a lot of ways sometimes,
you know, as marathon girls basketball, they might be in
a district with Miami Country Day who has like one
of the top girls basketball teams in the country. You
don't have much hope advancing some years. Key West probably
doesn't have much hope advancing into the State Series. But

(17:21):
it doesn't
matter because as long as Key West gets the win
against Marathon, that makes their season.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
That's all anybody's gonna remember that. That's it. Nobody cares
how far you, oh. But did you beat Marathon? Did
you beat Four Shores? Did you beat Key West? That's
what matters in the, in the thicket of all. And that, that's,
that's what makes it cool that these teams play one
another and they have good sportsmanship and good rivalries. And it's,
it's a great thing for the whole community to come
out and watch.
You wanna go wrestling next.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
I don't have anything written down about wrestling. So I
hope you're prepared to break

Speaker 2 (17:50):
it down. All right. Well, the wrestler, the girls wrestlers
did a great job last week. Um, four of them are,
they are placing at these tournaments and things like that.
I think they only took maybe five. So the girls
are doing great. Um, they've got the Colby Singletary Invitational
coming up for the gentleman who's

Speaker 1 (18:06):
Colby Singletary. Tell the fans exactly who Colby,

Speaker 2 (18:09):
how would I know who Colby Singletary is? This is
like an away tournament but
stores in Key West are both going to be going there.
So we'll cover that for sure. And then districts will
be at Coral Shores this year. So that'll be nice.
Key West won't have to travel very far because, you know, that's,
that's a heck of a, of a season for Chess
menace having to hit the road and some of these
tournaments are so far away, it's a little bit easier
if you're at Coral Shores. So wrestling is going strong.

(18:31):
They go later into February than, than some of the
other sports. But, um, there's a sport that only Key
West has currently
and it's, it's a big news,

Speaker 1 (18:43):
big news news, I don't understand,

Speaker 2 (18:46):
are going to the state,

Speaker 1 (18:47):
what states? States

Speaker 2 (18:49):
they're, they're playing for a state title and girls competitive cheerleading.
They went to regionals in one of the biggest categories. Um,
you know, so they have all these different categories. If
you've ever watched some of these shows or you watch
the movie, bring it on, they'll have like, 100 hours.
I've never seen that

Speaker 1 (19:04):
movie. What's it about?

Speaker 2 (19:05):
Oh, my goodness. If you've never seen that movie you're
really missing out, you get
the whole world of competitive cheerleading and, and the ins
and outs and, but, you know, should we watch

Speaker 1 (19:13):
it tonight? No,

Speaker 2 (19:14):
we gotta watch the game anyway. It's, um, it's a
lot like, you know, I don't think people say, oh,
cheerleading is not a sport. You hear that a lot?
But I've coached cheerleader who says that there. I'm not
going to name names of the rude people that say it.
But there are people who are probably listening and feel
that way. My late father felt that way. But I'll
tell you
those girls are athletes. You know, I believe, um I've
seen shirts that say athletes lift weights, we lift athletes

(19:38):
and it's like a cheerleader shirt because they're lifting girls
in the air and they're not just lifting the weight,
they're balancing it and then the weight is twisting on
its own and flipping it. It's crazy but I digress. Um,
so key was high. They compete in the small non
tumbling category, which is a small
group. I, I don't know the exact number but it's,
it's not 30 you know, it might be like 1516
and they're not doing um gymnastics. So, you know, you

(20:00):
would think, oh, maybe that's not, that's not as good
or it's, you know, not as sporty. But if you're
not doing tumbling sequences, that means you're dancing and stunting
the entire 2.5 minutes. So it's almost as if, um
you know, you're going as hard as you can dancing, sprinting, pushing, throwing,
doing it all synchronized with everybody else on your team

(20:22):
with moving parts and human beings and limbs flying everywhere
for 2.5 minutes. It's exhausting. It takes like days and
days and hours all this time. It's so much. And
this year Key West managed to get a high enough
score that they're going to. States. That's the first time
in a couple of years. It's a big deal. So, um,
why would you cover that? They can get a state?

Speaker 1 (20:42):
They're competing for an FHSA, a state championship.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
That's, they, they made it. It's just like, you know,
you'll say a wrestler is going to States, it's a
big deal. Um, football goes to States. It's a huge deal.
Competitive cheer going to States, awesome job. Very excited for
these girls and, you know, well deserved well earned and,
you know, we didn't cover them much because a lot
of times it'll just be, you know, in a gym
and there are parents there only and it's ok. We

(21:07):
have the cheering competition and it's just the two teams
against one another. You know, they don't tend to
as many fans, they don't tend to get as many athletes,
but certainly if you've ever seen them perform or if
you've ever watched a halftime show, it's, it's a great show,
but those girls are athletes, they make it look effortless.
It's not, that's

Speaker 1 (21:23):
fantastic. So, we're gonna be following their progress. Hopefully, they
could bring home their first state championship and competitive cheerleading,
the first state championship in Monroe County and would be
for Key West High School as far as competitive cheering goes. So,
just to make congratulate, congratulations to them.
How about girl athletes? Also? Girls, weightlifting is winding down.

(21:45):
Everything's coming together for all three of the Monroe County
schools because all three of them have weightlifting. You know,
do you think we're gonna have the state championship this
year in girls weightlifting, a state

Speaker 2 (21:58):
champ? I know we're gonna have medalists. I know we're
gonna bring home more medals this year than last year.
I don't know who, you know, I, I don't know,
but I feel as if in the next couple of years. Absolutely.
There will be a state champion or two but this year, I,
I know these girls are working so hard. There's, they're
gonna be medalists more than, than just one last year.
Michael Ross brought a medal home. I feel like there
are gonna be quite a few from multiple schools. So that's,

(22:20):
they're having districts this week. I would say in every
single weight category, most of the schools will advance at
least one athlete. Some of the schools are going to
advance multiple athletes in, in the same weight weight category
and then, then regionals will kind of weed out a
few more and then we'll find out who's going to
make that trip to States. So that's exciting. That's winding
down and, and that's gonna be big news in the

(22:41):
coming weeks. So if you look

Speaker 1 (22:42):
at your weekly. If you hopefully really do what you're
supposed to do.
Get your keys weekly, read it, get your keys weekly
sports rep, read it, then turn on the podcast and
then you have your keys weekly sports rep open and
you're looking at the pictures as we talk about them.
You don't wanna do that. Maybe if, yeah, your pictures

(23:03):
this week in the weekly is marathon Justice Lee. Setting
a big school record, 100 and £85 in the clean
and jerk. You're gonna see that happen. Thanks to Barry Gockel,
our photographer at the weekly
um setting a school record. Justice Lee, we've talked about
her all year long. She's doing it, she's making it
and she's only a sophomore. Um You're gonna see a

(23:25):
picture of Ella Dunn and Justice Lee. They look to
be two strong competitors for states this year. Tracy touched
on that Coral Shores. Rachel Rouch took a double win
at a Keys Wide meet on January 17th,
£105 clean and jerk lift. Tell us a little bit
about

Speaker 2 (23:44):
Rachel Rachel is a great athlete. She's really coming into
her own weightlifting. She did competitive diving at Coral Shores
that so that tells you you're strong. You're not just,
you know, it's not a belly flop contest. You're holding
your body in some crazy positions and, and you know,
making sure that, you know, you make a tiny little
splash and you have to have a lot of muscle
to do that. So, Rachel's a great athlete and she's
going to go far. I'm really hoping she makes it

(24:06):
to States and comes home with a medal, but she's
one of, one of Coral Shore's best prospects and
she's just, you know, really, such a nice young lady
and really deserving of this. I know she's a hard

Speaker 1 (24:16):
worker, the girls up and down the keys killing it, weightlifting.
We're wishing them the best at districts and we wanna
see some medals this year. Lots of them. Speaking of
winning
all of the Monroe County soccer teams, they're all winning,
just like Charlie Sheen talked about

Speaker 2 (24:35):
winning. Someone can't win this

Speaker 1 (24:37):
week. What are you talking about? Do we have rivalry week?
Key West improved his regular season record to 84 and
two and that would be the Key West boys.
The Conks haven't lost a match since December 7th. We
touched on that in our last, in our last podcast

Speaker 2 (24:54):
and their performance on them, a home, a home quarter
final birth. So they're gonna start their districts at home
and that'll be, you know, tomorrow. So they're gonna be
playing at home and the boys for districts. Now. What
about districts now? Ok. Season's over

Speaker 1 (25:09):
really seasons. What happen?

Speaker 2 (25:10):
It all starts over now, we're moving into districts so
I

Speaker 1 (25:13):
need to read the weekly more.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
Yes, she's not just the pictures you thought that? So
the boys at Key West are playing against South Miami
and that's at

Speaker 1 (25:23):
home. Wait a second. I gotta wrap my head around
this Key West high school boys are in the district.
So

Speaker 2 (25:29):
let's, let's say this. They started the year out. 050
and five.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
Barely alive.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
Bad for, for. But I believe in them because those,
I remember them last season. They, you know, when they
came up the marathon, I was getting some of their
headshots and taking pictures of them and talking to them.
They were like a scrappy group and they really worked
hard and they're excited. They have a new coach, coach
Farar and he really is behind them and he couldn't
say enough. And he's, he's legit and he turned them
around and, and now they went from, oh and five to,

(25:58):
you know, not losing since mid December. They got a
home court, home field advantage, home pitch if you will
against South Miami.

Speaker 1 (26:06):
So they're in the district tournament quarterfinals. If they be,
if they win the district or they become runner up,
they will advance to the playoffs. Yes.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
So they have to, they have to take down South
Miami and Key West is the higher seed and, you know, it's,
you know, crazy things can happen in soccer. So, um,
whatever winner there is gonna go play Mast Academy, I believe. Um,
Mast is one of the higher rank teams pretty good,
big school. And then the winner of that semifinal round
would then go into the championships against, most likely Gulliver.

(26:33):
I mean, unless they all break out with the flu
or they all get in trouble or something. Gulliver is
a strong team. So,

Speaker 1 (26:38):
I heard Pele's son plays on Gulliver. Is

Speaker 2 (26:40):
that, is that true?
I don't believe any of them. So I go, wow. Ok. So,
Paley's

Speaker 1 (26:47):
son's probably 60 or 50.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
He's probably still good at soccer. I mean, just passed away. Yeah,
I mean, he's too soon to talk about this. No,
not his son. His son's great. Does he even have
a son? I

Speaker 1 (26:58):
don't know. I made it up. This is the podcast
of making stuff up. All right. Let's move on. What
do we have? We are number one in the World
County prep Sports podcast. What do we have going on
as far as marathon? What are they doing? Marathon boys.

Speaker 2 (27:14):
Boys are playing at South Homestead this week in the summer.

Speaker 1 (27:17):
South Homestead.

Speaker 2 (27:18):
So, if you will. So they're going to play soho
after that, um, quarterfinal match. Whoever wins that one moves
on to Palmer won't, won't,

Speaker 1 (27:27):
why do you make that noise because Palmer

Speaker 2 (27:29):
stacked
pack, but I won't get into that. Palmer

Speaker 1 (27:32):
is excellent. They go and win state championships in soccer
almost every year and it's very difficult to be in
a district with them knowing that you're gonna have to
face that year.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
Yeah. It's almost like, oh, come on,

Speaker 1 (27:41):
man. Well, they're that private school. They're a beautiful private school.
They probably have kids from all across the world and
they got the peacocks. They do have the peacocks. If

Speaker 2 (27:48):
you've never been to, to Palmer, you go to their track,
you go to you on to their campus. It's amazing.
It's beautiful.
There's peacocks everywhere. Like they're so, they're so fancy. They
have peacocks. I think we have like a couple of
seagulls up here. We have Iguanas. We do, we have
beautiful Iguanas. They have peacocks for crying out loud. So
marathon

Speaker 1 (28:04):
people are talking about coming out a marathon. And can
you believe they have Iguanas there? Maybe it's

Speaker 2 (28:09):
unbelievable. They're from like New York or something. But marathon
is gonna play Soho in the quarterfinals, in the same district.
We have um, the other,
the other, um, Somerset Silver Palm will be playing Coral
Shores this week. So whoever wins the marathon soho game
moves on to play Palmer, whoever wins the, the Silver Palms,
Coral Shores boys game will move on to play Keys

(28:30):
Gate and then so the Keys Gate, Palmer. And you know,
that's the after that will be the championship. So, you know,
marathon boys and Coral Shores boys both have an opportunity
to move

Speaker 1 (28:42):
on. Do they have an opportunity to play each other again?

Speaker 2 (28:44):
They do. They absolutely do. So, they both lose.
Um, no, if they both, if they both lose, they're
both out, if they both win, each of them will
have to play another high ranked team. Palmer and Keys Gate.
If they manage to beat Goliath in the Palmer and
Keys Gates teams, then they would play one another for
the district championship. So it's pretty unlikely scenario that they
both get that far. I feel like in the brackets

(29:06):
if you were to bet on that, you know, you,
you'd have a high, high stakes win there. You get
some money.

Speaker 1 (29:11):
There would be a big payday if you won that
one there.

Speaker 2 (29:13):
Sure would. But, you know, let's hope for that. Let's
hope it's marathon versus Coral Shores in the District farm.

Speaker 1 (29:18):
I just found out on my, my phone, it says
Florida now has sports betting. I get that all the

Speaker 2 (29:23):
time. Why am I betting that too? My algorithm can
you bet on that? No, probably. But I, that'd be
very unethical.

Speaker 1 (29:29):
I see that message all the time. Why? I don't
even bet. Why am I seeing that message? I

Speaker 2 (29:33):
hope maybe because we do this podcast and we talk,

Speaker 1 (29:35):
maybe because they're like, they're the number one podcast. They
probably have a lot of money to bet they

Speaker 2 (29:41):
want us to talk about and we did. All right.
So that's the,

Speaker 1 (29:44):
so let's talk about the girls, talk

Speaker 2 (29:46):
about the girls
tonight as we record and then, you know, by tomorrow
when this comes out, it will be old news, I guess. So,

Speaker 1 (29:52):
we're talking about Wednesday night, yesterday night, last night. Yeah,
we

Speaker 2 (29:55):
have the third meeting of Coral Shores and Marathon Girls,
Battle

Speaker 1 (30:00):
of the Keys girls soccer style Battle of the

Speaker 2 (30:02):
ladies. Battle of the ladies. They're up at Coral Shores
tonight and they are, you know, they're trying to get
out of the quarter finals and into the semis. So,
so they're

Speaker 1 (30:11):
in the district tournament too to see if they can
the playoffs. 100% if you win, you survive if you
lose soccer season's

Speaker 2 (30:19):
over. That's right. You move on to spring sports. So somebody, somebody, um,
in Monroe County will 100% make it to the district semifinals.
It's going to be Marathon or Coral Shores, one of
them is going to make it to the semis and
they'll play on January 26th against who, who Palmer and
then there's a championship game. So, I mean, there, that's

(30:40):
gonna be rough.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
You never know,

Speaker 2 (30:41):
you never know. It could be good. So, you know, unfortunately,
we don't have the hope for like Marathon and Coral
Shores playing each other for that district championship. That's not
gonna happen

Speaker 1 (30:50):
because somebody's getting eliminated. It

Speaker 2 (30:52):
doesn't matter if they tie, then they're going to shoot out.
So it's gonna be over. Um, then we have Key West,
Key West and Mass. They have a weird district where
there's only four teams that are competing this year. So
Key West and Mass, they sort of both have a buy, um,
just because it's small districting
and they are playing in the quarterfinals against each other
and then they'll move on to the championships and the

(31:13):
championships will be the winner of the Saint Brendan Gulliver game.
Talk about good soccer. Holy cow. I, I feel sorry
for Marathon Carl Shores having to face Palmer, but Gulliver
and Saint Brendan are just as bad. So, um, key West,
if they win their semifinal match, so again, they don't
have a quarterfinal semis. If they win that, then they're

(31:33):
going to move on to the,
to the championship against the winner of the Gulliver Saint
Brendan game. And then, you know what he, they, they
have the ability to do that. And if they're playing
their best soccer, they could pull off a win, they
could do it two in a row. They'd be, you know,
district champs

Speaker 1 (31:49):
coach wise says if you're not believing you're not achieving,
I

Speaker 2 (31:52):
believe in that they're doing a great job.

Speaker 1 (31:54):
You know, who I believe in, I believe in the Keys,
weekly sports rap podcast and print editions. Athlete of the week.
We

Speaker 2 (32:03):
have a good one this week.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
This athlete of the week is Elena Eubank junior at
marathon
coach Garvey, head basketball coach. She's a leader in every way.
She has been playing Lady Finn's varsity basketball since she
was in middle school now. As a junior, she's moved
into that leadership role. She is a team leader. She

(32:25):
helps explain to the team what they're doing right or wrong.
She consistently leads marathon in scoring. She helped to win,
she helped the Fins to the big win against Key
West High School in overtime with a 21 point production.
I'm gonna tell you right, right now, from what I've
seen over the past year, she's a great athlete
and she is a great team leader and I'm really

(32:48):
happy for her. And anytime marathon which is a high
school of roughly 400 kids can beat Key West, which
is a high school of roughly 1400 kids and anything
your players are doing something. Right. Congratulations to her. And Tracy,
what do you think? I

Speaker 2 (33:03):
can't say enough things about Elena. She's a fun, fun kid.
She makes me laugh. Um, I coached her in track.
I really try to get her to play soccer. But she,
you know,
she's probably one of the better soccer players. If she
went out this year, she'd be one of the top
players in the team because she's just such an athlete
in everything she does and, you know, she just wants
to be good at everything and if she's not the
best right away, she's so stubborn and hard working that

(33:26):
she's gonna stay late. And, you know, I had her
high jumping for me and hurtling, which those are, those
are some things where if you don't get it right
in the first half hour or so, you should probably
kind of quit and give up for the next day
because I mean, you're gonna be hitting the
hurdles, you're gonna be landing on the bar. She didn't care. She,
she's like, nope, I'm gonna get it and she would
just keep on going until she did and somehow she
will herself to clear the bar. She will herself to

(33:48):
get over the hurdles and she is an amazing athlete.
She won marathons athlete of the year last year. As
a sophomore, she's a phenomenal athlete and she is just
an asset to every team. She's on a nice person. Um,
she can be silly. She can be great. She's gonna
go to school someday somewhere. They're gonna be lucky to
have this girl but not for two more years.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
Well, congratulations to her and thank you guys for listening
to the Keys Weekly Sports Rap podcast. It's a lot
of fun for Tracy and I to bring this to you,
everybody take a look at your Keys Weekly. As soon
as you get it, we get ours on Thursday. I'm
