Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back, everyone to the Keys Weekly Sports r your
number one place to go for Florida Keys, prep, sports news, rumors, rumors.
I think we're gonna get the rumors in perhaps rumors.
Innuendo gossip is not the I is what we're gonna
be going on in the room. So this will be
the perfect Florida Keys podcast. So embarrassing.

(00:22):
Actually, this is your number one place for Florida Keys,
prep sports news history and just the facts, not rumors.
Sometimes you have rumors, you, we're not checked. This is
a mostly factual podcast is what you're saying. Well, you
know what, it's conjecture. If there's something that's not a fact,

(00:45):
it's probably coming from me
if there's a, you know, I could estimate sometimes, you know, um,
maybe both some things out of proportion. I don't know.
But if that's happening it's because

Speaker 2 (01:00):
you're
so excited and happy. Talk about your favorite subject. Florida Keys,

Speaker 1 (01:05):
prep sports. If Tracy's saying it, it's absolutely true. If
I'm saying it, it's, uh, maybe,

Speaker 2 (01:11):
probably, probably, probably based

Speaker 1 (01:13):
on

Speaker 2 (01:13):
fact,

Speaker 1 (01:13):
there's gonna be some truth.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yes, I can't believe it's not fact.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Ok. Now, actually, hello. I'm Sean mcdonald. I'm here with
Tracy mcdonald and we are the Florida Keys Sports rap podcast.
Hopefully you guys are checking out your Florida.
Um What is the newspaper called?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
This? It's called Keys Weekly.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
What?

Speaker 2 (01:34):
That's, that's the name

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Keys Weekly. So hopefully you guys are checking out your
Keys Weekly today and you're looking at the sports app.
Tracy does all the work there. I do nothing. I
don't even know why my picture is there but check
the newspaper, check all the stories and we're gonna get
down to it. We're gonna give you the inside scoop.
We're gonna give you something that's not in the paper.
And guess what? We're starting first with lacrosse.

(01:57):
Tell me about lacrosse. We had districts, districts

Speaker 2 (02:00):
occurred. There were only two lacrosse. Well, there are four
lacrosse teams in the Keys.
Um, two at Corl Shores Boys and girls and two
at Key West High Boys and girls. The, um, all
four teams this year seemed to be, um, I thought
they would be rebuilding all of them, but Key West
High Boys went on quite a run. They did a
great job and, um, last year they had a rough season.

(02:24):
Lots of kids out with injury this year, they came
back strong. I thought they were gonna make a deep broad.
I mean, maybe be district champs, girls had a chance
there all at Key West. But, you know, they
a, a less likely chance. I would say they really are.
Definitely a young inexperienced team and both Carl Shore's teams are,
you know, they, they're hit or miss with their rosters

(02:44):
as far as experience goes. But like I said, they're
always scrappy boys and girls. Both, those are two scrappy teams. So,
you know, it was, it was a nice, a nice, um,
way for the season to kind of wrap up. It
looked like everybody had the opportunity to go far,
you know, unfortunately there are no more lacrosse teams in
playoff contention in the teams.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
So all of lacrosse is over,

Speaker 2 (03:06):
it's over

Speaker 1 (03:07):
and, you know, the sort of a little bit of
history Coral choice has had lacrosse at least for 15
years at the, at the. Yeah. Coral choice has had
lacrosse for a very long time. Key West just got
it maybe five or six years ago.
Marathon. I don't know if we're ever gonna get lacrosse. Yeah.
I mean, for those of you guys who don't know, um,

(03:29):
we have roughly 400 kids in the high school and
I was just talking to athletic director, Lance Martin about this.
We have to be very careful about the amount of
sports we offer. Like we can't. Right now. Currently we
have track in the sprint.
Uh, we have baseball going on in the
spring.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Tennis, tennis takes five whole athletes out of the equation.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
We have tennis. So for us to add a different sport,
you know, we're gonna be dividing those kids even more.
So fortunately in Key West high school, cool shorts has lacrosse.
They had, uh, fantastic years, but their year is over.
It

Speaker 2 (04:04):
is. And that's unfortunate. But like I said, all the,
all the teams seem to do pretty well and kind
of like in the postseason is,
it's an exciting time. Even though kind of disappointing way
to end, we'd hope to have at least one district
champ summer here in the Keys. But this is the
time of year we start to hear about the players
who they stood out for their team, they stood out
for the coaches and they might be taking their talents

(04:24):
to the next level. I do have some insider info,
at least one Key West, um, gentleman will be going
on to play the next level, but I wanna wait
a little while on that. We

Speaker 1 (04:33):
don't wanna steal Key West high school thunder.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I don't, I want them to announce the proper way
and I'm sure they'll have more than one, but it
is exciting because I know these, these boys and girls
that work really hard, it's not an easy sport, not
that any of them are. But, um, to see that
college is like, hey, that tiny little school on that
little island, you know, they have some gems there for
us to, to bring in and the athletes at our,
our big giant college institution. So it's an exciting time

(04:57):
of year for lacrosse, even though the seasons are officially I,

Speaker 1 (05:00):
so for this next part we're gonna talk about. Not
only did you report on it? Not only did you
write a story on it? You also worked the concession stand.
We're gonna, we're moving it over to track. Um, last
week at marathon seven South Florida teams descended. They all Locusts.

(05:21):
They did. It was like, perfect. You hopefully made their
own money.
Everybody showed up to marathon. There was the middle keys
track invitational. All the Monroe County High Schools were there. Um,
Westminster Academy was there, correct? Westminster Academy in Broward County.
Um

(05:43):
Palmer was there, was there.
You think I should know this stuff?

Speaker 2 (05:56):
You know, I didn't, this is terrible. There was at
least one Somerset there. I didn't, not the one that
couldn't come because of the eclipse. Yeah, they couldn't come
because the eclipse. But, um,

Speaker 1 (06:08):
what are you talking about? Wait a second. What I
told you

Speaker 2 (06:11):
this last week that one of the Somersets had to
cancel their softball game with Coral Shores. And then that
team didn't even come to track me because they were
worried about the EIP

Speaker 1 (06:19):
totally clipped to the heart of the track. So we
had the track meet. There was all these teams here.
You were working.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
I see myself the concessions and the keys teams. I
did not really concern myself with other teams.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
That's a
good philosophy. Let's break it down. Key West actually took
first place overall in the boys event. 100 and 96
points marathon was fourth.
Um with 86

Speaker 2 (06:47):
you know what's crazy about
that marathon only had one first place winner. He won
two events but they only, he only, they only had
one first place winner and picked up that many points,
which is quite a bit

Speaker 1 (06:57):
impressive. Coral Shores was fifth with 59.5. Now, the Lady
Conks were second place overall. The track meet scoring 100
and 72 points
in

Speaker 2 (07:09):
those field events. They're very, you know, they, they have
their individual coaches and that sort of thing. They're fancy
there and that's nice.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
So when you talk about field events, high jump, long jump,
pole vault,

Speaker 2 (07:19):
long jump, long jump. No, because that, that's an athlete.
Athlete was long jump. I'm talking about pole vault. I'm
talking about usually triple jump. Yes, high jump, anything that require, uh, hurdling,
anything that requires a bit of fear. A lot of,
a lot of training,
that's where those fancy schools kind of, you know, get
us because our, our coaches will have to coach five

(07:39):
or six different events and be a jack of all trades.
Whereas I know that some coaches or some schools just
have a, a coach dedicated to one event. Probably we
don't have a luxury of that in the keys. We
have to be, we have to be versed in everything
because we're so isolated.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Well, marathon Coral Shores were 4th and 5th respectively earning
94 and 25 points for their teams.
Um Key West boys really dominated Shane. Lavalle was first
in javelin and second in the 200.
Um an all time record at Key West High school
in the javelin was set by Lavalle. I
think

Speaker 2 (08:13):
it was the number two all time record. His

Speaker 1 (08:15):
2nd, 2nd
all time.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
That's it. Rick mckenzie helps us with some of those
stats and he, he keeps track of that for us.
So Prop Rick takes pictures and does a good job
and he just, you know, does it out of the
goodness of his heart. Um I do have the marathon
archives compiled so I can give this out toward the
end of the season and I'm gonna work on coral
shorts as well.
We do have these all time records for key S

(08:38):
which is so cool at those.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
It is um marathon boys had two first place finishes
in the home meet, both from Jay Marshall, the speedster
of the Florida Keys. He won the 100 the 200
m to maintain his status as fastest prep athlete in
the Keys.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
He's the fastest. No, I I would definitely say, hey, Jay,
let's uh we'll do like a five K. I think
it could probably beat him anything over three miles. But boy,
that kid's fast.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
So, what were your overall takeaways? I mean, it had
to be nice having the track me at marathon what
were your overall takeaways on it?

Speaker 2 (09:12):
I
thought it was, it was wonderful just to have all
the athletes in one spot. They, they're gonna be here
again and, um, all together,
half of them will be together at Q but that every, every, maybe,
you know, a couple of weeks or so, it seems
like all the, the keys teams meet up in the
US or Coral Shores or your marathon. And it's nice
when they can all, you know, compete against each other

(09:34):
because they know each other. It's, it's friendly. There's no
like fights breaking out on the track. No one has
to break anything

Speaker 1 (09:41):
up or something. No

Speaker 2 (09:42):
pantsy box. Yeah, everybody's nice. Thank good is because of
javelin and discus. It's kind of

Speaker 1 (09:48):
let's talk

Speaker 2 (09:49):
Idris, let's

Speaker 1 (09:50):
talk tennis.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Ok.
But there were records broken at that track

Speaker 1 (09:55):
as I talk about Shane LA.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
That
was second for the all time calls. Um Daisy Daisy
Williams broke the high jump record. Her and Justice Lee
broke the girl's, um,
girls javelin record. No girls shop, but it was Nicole
Marion's girls shop up record that she broke. So she
owns all three of the throwing records as well as
all the lifting events. And so, yeah.

(10:19):
Yeah. So the girls did a good job breaking records
j super fast. But there's a lot more in the
paper you can read about your school and you know,
your favorite athletes and who did what? But go on,
let's move on.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
I'm

Speaker 2 (10:29):
just,

Speaker 1 (10:29):
I mean, we're gonna talk about tennis, but they're breaking records.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
That's a

Speaker 1 (10:31):
big deal. I'm really eager to get to what you
did for homework. I'm really excited to share that with
the listeners. The color code. He's got you. Yes, absolutely. So,
let's talk a little bit about tennis. Tennis had districts
last week and then, like, you know, this is where
you're gonna get the inside scoop.
We, I, I think this is safe to say is

(10:52):
our kids, our kids like playing tennis.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Sure. It's a fun game. It's, it's great cardiovascular activity.
You can do it for life. Um, it's fun. It's
another one of those positive camaraderie sports love it.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
It's a fantastic sport. It is.
Our kids enjoy it and they go out and they
play in their spare time and some

Speaker 2 (11:11):
of them

Speaker 1 (11:11):
are

Speaker 2 (11:11):
pretty

Speaker 1 (11:11):
good at it and we have some great matches. Marathon
Key West, you

Speaker 2 (11:15):
know, marathon second match pretty cool. Two in six years now.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
But it's a whole new ball game when we get
to districts.
The truth of the matter is, is like when our
guys from the Keys get to districts, they're playing against kids.
The fancy schools who not only that but with fancy
tennis

Speaker 2 (11:35):
play fancy and they have that coaching that one on
one coaching that I was talking about for pole vault
and high jump in the fancy events. They have that
definitely with
tennis,

Speaker 1 (11:45):
um, marathon played against, well, the boys played against a gentleman,
I think from Palmer and who was ranked in the
top 50 tennis players in the world for
his age.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
I heard 73

Speaker 1 (11:57):
I heard 50

Speaker 2 (11:58):
you know what, that doesn't even impress me,

Speaker 1 (12:02):
but I heard 5050 it impresses me. So what you're
dealing with is you're dealing, you're dealing with, with, with really,
really good tennis players. You know, when you talk about ransom.
Um, I had heard before in the past that they
don't even practice together as a team because they all
have their individual, individual coaches. So it doesn't even sound fun. No,

(12:22):
it doesn't. But it's a whole different world in tennis.
Our kids went to districts and I don't think anyone
moved on. Correct.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
No one moved on. But, um, I don't know, you
know what? I don't have QS results yet.
So they're not, they're not really in our grouping and
I'll have that out for the paper. I mean, I mean,
this is, you know, it's Wednesday that just happened Monday.
And so I do know that Carl Shos, um, their
number one doubles team with Conie Burger and a house
did win their first, their first match which took them

(12:51):
to the second day
and I believe they be calmer. They be one fancy school,
but then fancy pants, number two came along and they,
I believe ran something

Speaker 1 (13:00):
fancy
pants. Number two.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
But congrats to Aidan, Emma Kong. They did a great
job and they won against, you know, a really solid
team and, you know, it just wasn't, they just aren't quite,
I don't know, they can dedicate their lives to maybe
these kids just eat sleep, breathe tennis. I
don't,

Speaker 1 (13:18):
well, it's, it's only like that too is they just
have so many options to play in the off season.
There's probably tournaments every weekend. There's private coaching

Speaker 2 (13:26):
and these guys are our kids up here down there
at all. Through the keys are doing different sports. More
than one.
You know, they're, they're doing multiple events, they're doing a
lot of things.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
So, but congratulations on the two players successful season,

Speaker 2 (13:39):
there might have been a Key West player or two to,
to slide through. I'm not sure, but I, I don't
believe they did.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah.
So, congratulations to all, all the coaches doing a great job. Now,
if you guys are reading the paper right now, there
is a little thing about the podcast. It's a little foreshadowing,
it's telling you what's going on.
And Tracy was really excited to do some homework for
the podcast and you have the batting averages for the district.

(14:11):
Is that what we have? What are, what are we
talking about?

Speaker 2 (14:12):
We've got more than that. We've got the district leaders. Now,
you hear about our kids that are good. Oh, Campbell boy,
did this. He's wonderful. Or, or, hey, wow. Um, you know,
Felix had a great, you know, eating here but we
hear these things, but how do they compare to the
rest of their districts? So, I did some homework to
see who stood out in baseball and
softball in their districts. So, what would you like me

(14:35):
to start with? I do not have Corals Shortz. Girl,
they don't have any stats. Let's

Speaker 1 (14:39):
start at the top. Baseball. Ok.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
So for Coral Schwartz baseball we have, um, senior Zeke Meyers,
we know he's a head of an ale. We know, um,
you know, he's good at a lot of stuff, but
he is number three in the district right now within
batting average and his batting average is 406. Very impressive, impressive. So, um,
awesome job Zeke, um, junior AJ Patti, you know, he's
like the Charlie hustle, you know, the,

(15:02):
they had a coach g in football, that's the kind
of athlete you want, you want him on your team,
not against you. So AJ is number two in stolen bases,
quick kid, you know, very, um, athletic aggressive. He's number nine, he,
I'm sorry, number two in stolen bases with nine. So
he's stealing bases. Look at, you got the cops coming.
No bad.

(15:24):
Ok. Um, and then came, boy is number three in
wins with, as a pitcher. He has, um, he's three
in the district for wins in their district with three. Also,
he gets, you know, I'm always intrigued by this statistic.
He leads his team in being beat.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
I knew you were gonna say being hit by a pitch.
I knew it. I almost said it. So he's been
hit by pitches the most times for
yes,

Speaker 2 (15:52):
he's been hit by a pitch five times.

Speaker 1 (15:54):
Why do you love that so much?

Speaker 2 (15:55):
I don't, I feel like honestly, either you're mouthy or,
um which I was when I played, I always thought,
you know, like

Speaker 1 (16:03):
I thought you would like it because you feel as
if he's sacrificing, that's

Speaker 2 (16:07):
the other half. Like either you're mouthy and you talk
a little bit of trash, which, you know, I don't
mind that as long as it's all good fun and
usually they have like good Zingers and so those are
kind of people along with because they're fun or you're
willing to put it all on the line, like you'll
get
like

Speaker 1 (16:22):
a lot of players see the pitch coming and get
out of the way.

Speaker 2 (16:25):
These are kids. You have to pretend to get out
of the way at least.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
But then there's that, see the pitch coming.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
They wanted that op which some people, the percent you're
gonna hear about. Some people lead, they're willing to sacrifice themselves.
So either way when kids get hit by a pitch
a lot, I tend to like those kids.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
So the

Speaker 2 (16:44):
five

Speaker 1 (16:44):
times that's the show is

Speaker 2 (16:47):
leaders. You don't, you don't leave the keys in that

Speaker 1 (16:50):
I can't wait to hear. I,

Speaker 2 (16:52):
I
don't think Campbell's mouth because he, we watched him play.
He's a very dignified player. He's, he's all business. He's
a great kid. I can, you know, he just, he
exudes like music in class. So, um, then we have,
let's go to Key West, Key West softball first. And
they have so many, I have so much writing in,

(17:13):
we'll do baseball first.
They have a lot too.

Speaker 1 (17:16):
So they are people leading the district for Key West
High School. Yes.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
So we've got Anthony Lari who's had a heck of
a year. He is doing great. His, er, a is
number two in their district. That's, um, 1.75. It's pretty good. Er,
a and as far as strikeouts go, he leads the
district with 62
which makes it even crazier that Jacob Burnham also Key

(17:40):
West pitcher, he's number two in that district with 57 strikeouts.
So perhaps you can explain about Coach Enriquez's pitching routine

Speaker 1 (17:48):
how he does that correct me if I'm wrong, he
usually goes with four pitchers and they call, I think
he calls it a piggyback system and usually he'll have
two pitchers pitch in one game and then two pitchers
pitch the next game and then
the pitchers are also rotating between who starts the game
and who finishes. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
And I'll say this, um, Lara and Burnham both have
some complete games, which is probably where they're picking up
and they're still striking him out at the end when
they should be gassed. So to be number one and
two in strikeouts is, is pretty phenomenal. Um, Jacob's number two,
I'm sorry, number three in, er, a with two point
out and then he has, he's number three in his district.
Bena is with wins. Um, he's got four wins this season.

(18:29):
Um, also now my favorite, maybe not, um, statistic, Jose
Coron has five hit by pitch tallies, so he's tied
over there with Campbell. So, you know, Jose has been
hit by a pitch five times and then Nelson, he's actually,
um he's been hit five times as well. His on
base percentage is like 514. So he's obviously, Nelson is

(18:52):
one of those hustlers that will do what it takes.
He's walked like
11 times. He's very selective. He's, he's great to have
at the play. He's at the plate more than half
the time he's getting on base one way or another

Speaker 1 (19:04):
when
you think about hit by pitch and, and you look
at the stats, I'm sure when you look at the stats, there's,
there's players who've been hit by pitches a lot and
then there's players that never get hit by, they

Speaker 2 (19:15):
bail

Speaker 1 (19:15):
out. You have to be willing and it's a great thing.
So

Speaker 2 (19:19):
I know it's great to get him the ball.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
Sort of a lot

Speaker 2 (19:23):
of

Speaker 1 (19:24):
those are the Key West high school baseball district leaders,
key West high school softball.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
So a
lot, Niles, she's a senior. She has a lot of
stats that she needs to district in. She's number one
in home runs, girls home run

Speaker 1 (19:40):
four in one game.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
It was a week, three in one game four in
the week. Got a couple more

Speaker 1 (19:45):
truth.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
You don't listen to him. So she's got six home runs.
She's leading the district right now. She's number one in
stolen bases with seven. She's number two in quite a
few things. She's number two in slugging. So she's getting
those extra bases, you know, because she's, you know, she's
getting doubles and triples and things and those home runs.
So she's got 809 slugging in RB. I, she's got
10 RBIs. She's crossed the plate and runs number two

(20:09):
there 13 times. So
she's number two in all those areas and then also
number two in on base percentage with 464.

Speaker 1 (20:18):
Wow, that those are really some impressive
numbers.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
They are. So next we have for key s high,
we have Alexa Candela junior. She's number three in slugging
with 439.
Alexander Rodriguez, another senior is number three and still on basis,
she's still on five this season. And then we have
our pitchers, Chloe Gildea and Brianna Breer both have some,
some stats in their car. So Chloe is a senior

(20:41):
and she's number two in, er, a with 262. She's
number three in strikeouts with 23 and she's number two
in wins with three and then Brianna is just a freshman. So, um,
you know,
we have, they got some, yeah, they're, they're not, they're
top head who is seniors but they do have quite
a few talented freshmen and underclassmen. So Brianna has, she's

(21:03):
number two in, er, a with 279 and she's number
two in strikeouts with 44 this season. So, Key West
softball is really, they've got a lot of leaders there,
especially Scarlet Miles Boy. Is she amazing?

Speaker 1 (21:17):
Well, this is fascinating when you think about the,
the district tournament is coming. So Key West softball, they
will be playing against all those girls in that district
and they have quite a number of leaders. So I
say it definitely, um, lends itself to a good district run.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
It
looks good for Key West girls in districts. Um, then
we have,
let's do marathon softball, marathon softball. Allison Garcia is a
senior and she has, um, she's number one in wins
with eight, so she's got eight wins. She's number three
in strikeouts with 92 and she's number one and no

(21:56):
hitters with two.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
Wow, that's really impressive. She's probably ranked in the state too.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Um, yes, she is. But there are, um, there's quite
a few, we're not, we're not, we're not going that deep.
So then, um, I did take some other stats there
where there are four hitters for marathon who are hitting
over 400. So we've got, um, Sarah Robinson is leading them.
That's a freshman. Um, Elena U Bank is second, Madeline Thornton, third,

(22:29):
and Allison Garcia fourth. But they're all over four
100.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
I mean, it's sort of AAA Secret.
But marathon girls softball is having a great year
this year.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
They are, they're, they're having, they're having one a and
they're playing, they, they played some wonky teams, they got
some fake teams but they're, they're winning against some real
teams.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
I mean, marathon high school girls softball is the only
program in the keys to win a state championship if

Speaker 2 (22:53):
that's true a while ago,

Speaker 1 (22:54):
right? 1984.
But they won a state championship in slow pitch that
same year, that same calendar year, they also won a
state championship in volleyball. So this goes

Speaker 2 (23:05):
to say that probably some of the same girls on
that volleyball team. Yeah, I see the thing in the

Speaker 1 (23:11):
coach, Chuck Bayliss was the coach.

Speaker 2 (23:13):
Yes. Now, what does that tell you about playing more
than one sport? It's a good thing. I agree. I mean, there, there's,
but I'm saying

Speaker 1 (23:22):
that

Speaker 2 (23:24):
marathon baseball, interesting, Gavin Leal and Gabe Leal
Twins in case you didn't know. And if you ever
try to follow this with the game tracker, all that stuff,
it's like g Leal and you're like, which one is it?
Catch you one of them. So it's kind of difficult, um,
especially when they have a batting helmet on because they
look very, very similar. So, um, Gavin is number one

(23:44):
in batting average with a 444 and he's number one
in on base percentage with 667. So Gavin is a, um,
I believe he had a season ending
injury. Correct.

Speaker 1 (23:55):
Um, yes, he's injured. We're hoping it's not for the season,
but it looks like it might be. It's a hip injury.
So he's been lost from the team for a couple
of weeks at this point when
he left

Speaker 2 (24:06):
and he's got enough games under there that he counted
for the stats. Yes. So Gavin's in lead there, Gabriel,
his brother is number two in batting average with a 426.
He's number two in wins, pitching with four.
Um He's number one in RB I, he's got 26
months back at it and then Gabe has something interesting.

(24:26):
He's number one in fielding for the district. He's like
the last man standing with 1000. Knock on wood. Come on,
Gabe

Speaker 1 (24:34):
go no errors. Like father, like son, I tell this
story all the time. I know his, his father is
the athletic terrain
at our school and um, Lewis Lee and he played
baseball at Key West High school. His junior year, they
won the 1998 state championship and Le Lee's fielding posses
percentage that year was 1.000.

(24:57):
So

Speaker 2 (24:58):
he's no, no pressure, Gabe. Um then let's see, we've
got Dylan Zeal. He's um, you know, Marathon's ace. He's
number two in RB, I, which is funny because he
used to talk about how he's not a good hitter.
He morphed into a good hitter. I say it's because
he played golf,
play golf. He did have a baseball, swinging goal, terrible
swinging golf. I mean, he played well, but his swing

(25:19):
wasn't pretty. He got there in an ugly manner and
now I got these reps. So now, boy, he's hitting
so baseball players, if your batting average is in a slump,
join the golf team,

Speaker 1 (25:29):
I say, join the football team, but that's a whole
different
story.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
Depends if you, maybe Dylan, yes, maybe some of the
other guys. I don't know. So Dylan, number two in RB,
I is with 20 he is the only guy right
now to throw a no hitter where he had that,
you know, perfect game through forward. So a no hitter,
he's got one,
his, er, a is number one with 0.61. That's crazy. Um, strikeouts.

(25:51):
He's leading with 74. He's got the, he's number one
in wins where Gabe was number two. so we've got
one in two wins in the district here. So Dylan
has five wins under his belt.
And let's see. Yep, that's, that's, I won't say let's
do for his stats, but that's quite a few. Then
we have Mason Thornton, he's number three in RBIs with
19 and number two in runs. So he's crossed the

(26:14):
plate 21 times. Um, Jack Chapman, eighth grader, eighth grader. Yeah,
he leads the district in runs. So he scored 27 times. Wow.

Speaker 1 (26:23):
And, and he's batting,
um, towards the back end of the line up. So
he's not getting as many at bats. That's very impressive.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
He's not, but his on base percentage is number two
in the district with 608608. He does not lead in
the stat that sometimes gets kids on base, which will help.
But um he, he's just very selective. He's a smart
kid
and he's doing a good job getting on base 0.608.
Number two for the district. Um

(26:51):
Mason Thornton and Leo Mendez hit by a pitch by
pitch five times

Speaker 1 (27:01):
on their names.

Speaker 2 (27:03):
I don't know, I know that he's been playing a
lot with injuries
here and so he, he's been up to five times. So,

Speaker 1 (27:16):
so that's it for the district stats. Tracy did a
fantastic job on that. You hit a home run there
or you got

Speaker 2 (27:22):
hit.
I got hit by A P on there. I did
the color coding of these for the team and I
got on
base

Speaker 1 (27:28):
so I appreciate it. Now, everybody's favorite time of this.
The most important part of the podcast athlete of the week.
The athlete of the week this week is who, Tracy.
I thought I did that to you. I didn't print
it up. You didn't print it up. I forgot.
Yeah, I think of the week this week, Tracy is,

Speaker 2 (27:48):
it's Caitlyn

Speaker 1 (27:49):
Palo. All right. Congratulations.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
Right. Now. You don't want to know what she does, or?

Speaker 1 (27:53):
No. I just want to say congratulations first. And then
I want you to tell me exactly why the editorial
staff at the Keys Weekly picked her for

Speaker 2 (28:01):
athlete of

Speaker 1 (28:01):
the

Speaker 2 (28:01):
week. Wonderful. Well, um, Caitlin is a girls lacrosse player
at Key West High School. Her coach had wonderful things
to say, I guess. Um, you know, Klin had stats
here and there. She scores a lot, but she scored
a whole heck of a lot against Coral Shores, which
was their, their district
quarter final match. She scored at least five goals in
that game and they didn't win by a ton. So

(28:23):
she really helped boost them. Um, she hustled a lot.
She fought for the ball. She, you know, she had
ground balls, she won draw control. She's wonderful. She's all
over the field, um, in the next game, the following,
you know, the following game they did lose in the semifinals,
but Caitlin willed to win, you know, she, she didn't
just lay down and let it happen. She did everything
she could to prevent that loss and keep the

(28:46):
comps in the running. And unfortunately it wasn't quite enough. But,
you know, she is a great lacrosse player. She's only
a junior and, you know, she kind of stepped up
this year. So, you know, we didn't see a whole
lot in the beginning. But I guess she was like,
you know, she kind of shined through like she was like,
I don't wanna say a dime in the rough, she
was never rough, but in the end when it all

(29:07):
kind of shook out, she really stood above and beyond.
So congrats to her, hopefully she carries it into a
solid season next year and,
you know, I get that back

Speaker 1 (29:29):
to you and you know what I just now, um,
thank you guys for listening to the Keys Weekly Sports rap.
I hope you guys have a great week. See you
next week.
