Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back, everyone to the Keys Weekly Sports, rap podcast.
Your number one information center for all things, keys prep sports. So,
I'm Sean mcdonald. I'm here with Tracy mcdonald. How are
you doing this week? Tracy? I'm great.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
It's been a busy week.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Why has it been so busy?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
There's a
lot going on. I mean, we're, we're late with this.
We are, you know, chasing our tails. It's crazy. There's
a lot of sports going on. It's districts here, districts there,
regional championships here. Um, what, what do we have? Conference finals?
We got a lot going on at
school.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
It's sort of, it's almost the end of the year.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Crazy time of year.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Spring. I, I feel like we've been saying for the
last month, spring sports are wrapping up. Spring sports are
wrapping up and they, they slowly are, and we're gonna
go over that today. The spring sports probably are the
most staggered finishes of all three. Don't you think

Speaker 2 (00:50):
they go? I mean, they can go to June actually,
but they probably will, but I guess it could,

Speaker 1 (00:55):
it could, the baseball, baseball goes far. I don't know
if it can go to June but it can go late, late,
late in today, you know. Ok.
So let's get down to it. Let's start off with
girls softball. Ok. How do you, how do you feel
about that? Do you feel like that's a good place
to start?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
That's a great place to start because there are only
two teams left

Speaker 1 (01:15):
and then there were two

Speaker 2 (01:16):
and then there were two. So we've got Key West
still in the hunt for, um, they, they do want
to defend their district title, but they've got a string
of injuries, you know, just again and again, you know, they,
they were getting healthy and then just something else happened.
So they're having a lot of, of bad luck there.
So they're, they're due for some good luck I'm hoping
and they, they just have a lot of young athletes

(01:39):
out there playing and they're, they're getting better. The younger
ones are. And then, so it's, it's win, win. Either
these younger girls are going to kind of like, step
in and, and pick up the slack where it's needed
while the other, the older more experienced players are out
or the, you know, are they gonna get better and
the older players are gonna come back either way. I
feel like Key West is gonna do well on, I
believe it's
second. They played for the district championship.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah. Well, we could break down last week. They were
able to beat Palmer Trinity 14 to 3 in Miami.
They also played, uh, what was it? Two against Miami Christian. Yeah,
Miami Christian, one of the oldest private schools in Miami.
They end up losing, um, 10 to 3 in the

(02:21):
second game.
Um,
and they lost 6 to 3 in the first.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
They lost both games.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Um, now they also have districts coming up. Right.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
They don't have to do a quarter final. They don't
have to do a semi final. They go right to
the big dance right to districts. So

Speaker 1 (02:40):
they go right to the district champion. They're playing

Speaker 2 (02:42):
for championship

Speaker 1 (02:44):
and that's gonna be May 2nd.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
That's what it,

Speaker 1 (02:46):
what it may 2nd. They're gonna play for the district championship. Now,
um, either way they will still move on because the
district runner up moves on. That is the case. So
if they're playing for the

Speaker 2 (02:59):
championship and

Speaker 1 (03:04):
it's, but it's all good. Now, in other news, uh,
I can give you an update because this podcast is late.
Marathon was able to beat Gulliver in the first round
of the district tournament.
So marathon just entered the tournament and

Speaker 2 (03:19):
they go
to, or is that last game of the year?

Speaker 1 (03:24):
I don't know. I was told this morning that it
was the first round of the tournament and they played
Florida Christian in a couple days, uh, in the semi finals.
So that's Girls softball podcast. We did talk about that.

(03:48):
I don't know. I like to make things up. So
now that we've been talking about for you. You're checking
me now, live on the air. You're checking me
to,
it's to ta
now one of the things that we've been talking about
for a long time is boys weightlifting. Let's give a

(04:10):
final wrap up. States. Three people from the keys went
to the FHSA A state championships and weightlifting. Chase Laird
qualified in the 1 £19 category. He was third in
the region.
He is a junior and he ended up finishing 19th

(04:31):
overall in the state. His teammate at Marathon Tanner Ross,
he qualified at the 1 £99 at regional.
He was able to do better at states by £20
than he did in regionals and he was in ninth place.
Um Tanner is also a junior who's looking forward to
coming back. Coral Shore is AJ Johnson qualified in both

(04:53):
the Olympic and traditional events at 219. The senior strongman
earned his tickets to state. He was second at regionals
in the Olympic and third in traditional, he improved his
performance in both events and placed eighth in the Olympic
lifts cracking the top 10. So he was two spotss
away from a medal. Um

Speaker 2 (05:11):
I mean, top 10, the strongest athlete and I mean that,
that's
crazy. You're a young man. Um A G is a senior,
I believe. Um, other two are not. So, you know,
if it tends to be the older you are as
a gentleman for sure. You know, you have a better chance. So,
for at least three to even make the state finals,
they are like the strongest guys at their weight class
in the entire state in one a and so they're

(05:32):
doing great and they, they lose some big weights and then,
and then Taylor, he didn't qualify in traditional, which I
really believe is where he would be stronger because he's
got a pretty good bench and he's, I know he's
working hard. So it's chase for next year and a
couple of the guys. So hopefully, um, a few more
go next year and we just keep this program going
to us to have, they plan
on having, I,

Speaker 1 (05:52):
I don't know, to be honest with you, I

Speaker 2 (05:55):
think

Speaker 1 (05:55):
they

Speaker 2 (05:55):
do pretty
well too because they've got some strong ale down there that,
that might be able to, to make the, uh, state
championships too.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Well, I just, I think it's fascinating that all these
guys go into states and, you know, if you're in
119 or all of the weight classes, when you get
to the state level,
our, our keys kids are seeing some incredibly strong guys
and it's giving them the motivation to work harder. You know,
it's one thing, it's one thing to be good in
your district. But then when you go up to the

(06:24):
state level and you see, like, I think the guy
in Tanner's weight class set a record in, in cleans
at 385. So when you see that, it really inspires
the kids down here to work out more.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
I mean, that's, that's insane,

Speaker 1 (06:38):
insane in the membrane.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
I mean, that's kind of, that's like you have to
get super human strength like when the cars on your
baby and you have to lift it off and I
feel like I don't know

Speaker 1 (06:46):
if you know, this is great. I just had, I
just had an epiphany about

Speaker 2 (06:49):
super human

Speaker 1 (06:50):
strength, about all these guys weightlifting. You know, if all
these guys weightlifting and they get big and strong, like
really big, maybe they could become professional wrestlers and maybe,
and just,
maybe just, maybe they could wrestle at coastal Championship wrestling
and then they could come back to Marathon and they
could wrestle in another event. Did you know that May 3rd?

(07:11):
We're having professional wrestling at Marathon High School to benefit
the football team. The doors open at seven o'clock CC
wrestling fl.com. You can get your tickets. It's $20 for
general admission
and it's 60 for front row. There's a couple, I
heard there's a couple front row seats left. If

Speaker 2 (07:27):
we did one of those fundraisers where you stop talking
about wrestling. If we raise the money
might make more money,

Speaker 1 (07:32):
I could not do that. So, hey, everybody, seriously, the
events coming out next. Well, this Friday coming up, May 3rd.
Marathon High school, everybody be there back to sports. Ok.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
You know, I did check you on the

Speaker 1 (07:45):
softball. I was right. Of course, I believe you go ahead.
The last,

Speaker 2 (07:55):
the last game to do. I do remember this part.
20th was the last day for, like, figuring out who
was going to humans. But there were still some game
scheduled for after
that

Speaker 1 (08:04):
when the tour,

Speaker 2 (08:05):
their first game is gonna be the 29
against Me Academy Bay with who they should be. They
should destroy that. Like, I mean, come on, Coach Martin,
destroy the stingray or stinger or whatever they are. I
don't know what they are. Is it a fake it?
And we want that, we need,

Speaker 1 (08:27):
we do need the hardware

Speaker 2 (08:29):
at high

Speaker 1 (08:29):
school. I thought, um,
yeah, they do. I thought this was, was pretty interesting.
Your story on tennis and reading. No, honestly, like reading
about tennis and we sort of talked about it last week.
You know, we didn't have any district championships but there
were some, uh, highlights. So, like we talked about yesterday
about the difference between tennis on the mainland and tennis

(08:52):
down here. Tennis down here is, is kids that like
playing tennis and they play and they have pretty good,
they get pretty good, like an old school tennis team.
And then when you get up, especially at the level
that we're at the small school level with the private schools,
you get kids who are dedicated to the. Yes. Yes,

(09:12):
they have to go to high school too and they
play on their tennis team. So someone has to be
fo so, so our kids get this great opportunity when
they go to districts to play against some incredibly great
tennis players, uh including marathon's Adrian old D
who got the unlucky, I guess draw of playing against

(09:37):
Brennan Chow from true North Classical Academy last year. He
was the Miami Herald's tennis player of the year.
He's ranked nationally and is committed to play collegiately for
the Air Force Academy.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
He, you know, his family also has like chow tennis
and we did some, we did some research on this guy.
We were scouting him out. Yeah, they have like a
tennis academy. He's a real deal. He's like multigenerational, awesome
tennis athlete and Adrian got to play
him.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
And how about the big news, Adrian scored a point?

Speaker 2 (10:07):
He did
so go
Adrian.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
So I thought that, I thought that was really cool.
And

Speaker 2 (10:11):
we did have one

Speaker 1 (10:12):
pair. Yeah, number one doubles team actually advanced to day
two after beating Palmer in Trinity

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Palmer. They didn't like that and took them down.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
They did not like

Speaker 2 (10:27):
that. The only, the only athletes in tennis to move
on to day two. But congrats to them.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
It's really awesome, man. It's really great that they get
that opportunity. Um,
are you ready to talk about baseball? Sure.
Baseball,

Speaker 2 (10:44):
baseball is your thing.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
It's
been a big, big week for baseball.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
How about that cover if you already have the Keys
weekly at this point because we already have that cover
was awesome. Was it guns blazing? And they have the
guys like, you know, it was a great cover. So
good job Javier
graphic design.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Let's break down the fourth wall,
you know, and we talked about like obviously those pictures
they come from the media day where the weekly shows
up at the school and the coaches work with the
Weekly and those kids are dressed in uniforms and we
take all these, we take all these cool pictures and
that allows us. So thank you to the schools that
participate in Media Day.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
Sure. There, there's that and there's a picture of Tiago
Rivera too who um, I know they got that on
the CE D day and the kids, they warmed up
and they, they got excited and they started being like
silly and I just thought it would be so great
if we could use this
because some of these pictures are great and very gockel
does a good job. There's people, all I doubt that
take these phenomenal pictures and I look at them and
I think, oh, I hope this kid has a breakout

(11:44):
game

Speaker 1 (11:44):
or I hope we just use the
picture.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
Yes, because I, I look at the picture, I'm like
we have to use this and you know, the, the
weekly staff does a really good job of getting those
pictures in sometimes though there, there's a great picture. We
can't use it, but

Speaker 1 (11:56):
we
got to, I mean, not to, not to overuse this
term but like, I feel like the Weekly is doing
big things when you look at that, when you look
at that keys, weekly sports rap.
Yes, I dare say cinematic,

Speaker 2 (12:09):
it is
blown up into a poster. I'm sure Carl Schwarz and
do the same at their school and they have one
of their athletes or a group of them on the cover. Like,
what a great thing to have. It's like being on
a
We Box.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
It's so much more than just like, hey, there's a little,
there's a little thing in the newspaper that says my name. Yeah.
All right. Let's get back down to it. All right.
So baseball Coral shows last week, they split the week
they had a big win, April 16th, followed by
loss on the 19th against Somerset Silver Palms. A big
9 to 1 victory. 13 hits Donovan theory. Zeke Meyers,

(12:43):
three of those hits doing big things now. Absolutely. Carl
Shores baseball next up the Hurricanes going up to Shana, Madonna.
Good thing that we're playing football. Shamaa Madonna's number one
team in the nation. Carl Shore has lost that 17
to 5 playing strong. Um All the runs for Shaman
and Madonna come in inning seven.

(13:05):
Um So tough loss for Coral Shores. Yeah,

Speaker 2 (13:08):
they
were up the whole game and then just in the
seventh inning, that was it. That was, that's a heartbreaker
right there. Yeah, we're gonna win this and then

Speaker 1 (13:15):
seventh inning stretch gone bad for sure. Key West had
the big opportunity.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
You know what? There were two more, there were two more.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
What do you mean that they were in the paper?
Are you giving me something? Not in the paper

Speaker 2 (13:27):
with

Speaker 1 (13:27):
this? Ok. So this is a spoiler alert. Almost

Speaker 2 (13:31):
a
fake. But that was,
they lost that 13 to 7 and they also play
La Salle and they beat them pretty handily 80. So
they're gonna be moving into districts coming up

Speaker 1 (13:44):
here this week, coming up

Speaker 2 (13:46):
and they don't, I don't know if they have the
skiing done yet.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
They do. Ok.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
So you have that.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
I
have that. I have that and it's actually true.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
Cool. All right. And then, so sh do

Speaker 1 (13:55):
you

Speaker 2 (13:55):
want to wait,

Speaker 1 (13:55):
wait until, until we break down marathon because they're, they're
in the same district. Um Key West had the big
opportunity of playing at Fiu on April 18th
against Westminster Christian school. Ironically, the team they're tied with
for most state championships. Um Key West loses the game
6 to 4. They were able to, to keep up
with them on hits. But um Westminster was able to

(14:16):
squeak it out.

Speaker 2 (14:18):
It's like when the hits fall, sometimes it's luck versus
no luck. Like you got a man on base and
someone hits a double.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
It's all about when the hits come.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
It is,

Speaker 1 (14:26):
uh the following night, Key West was back in the
friendly confines of Rex. We field against seven A South
Dade Buccaneers. A, a little personal story last Friday. Um
at about 145 I was at Publix and lo and behold,
as I go into the deli, there is the baseball
team from South Dade.

(14:47):
They were some big kids. They were, I talked to
each other. It's kind of, yeah, I, I was talking
to the coach. They were big. I was like, wow,
and I saw them and they were wearing their South date. So, oh,
you guys are going to Key West tonight, huh? Getting
ready for the game. And they were excited and I was,
I was very impressed after seeing, I mean, I obviously

(15:07):
it's not all in the size of man. They had
some big, they had some big hit Key West ends
up getting the win 4 to 1.
So, needless to say, overall, I was really impressed with
the Key West win over South Date. And, you know, honestly,
they've done a great job this year and they are
definitely looking forward to districts.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
They
are now, their, their record is not fantastic, but that
is because they play the greatest teams in the state.
They play the, the best competition they can in hopes of,
you know, then they get to districts and they're like, yawn.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
Well, the record might not be great, but their strength
of schedule is they played some of the top teams
in the country this year and then see if they
will be able to defend their district
title.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
I'm, I'm hoping for a double district title from Key
West in baseball and softball. That is, that's my hopes
and
yeah, we'll see if they can pull through

Speaker 1 (15:56):
marathon last week. Had a big week, a win streak
increased to five. Thanks to a trio of winds. They
were able to beat Somerset South Homestead 15 to 1
on April 15th.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
That's, that's
not real school,

Speaker 1 (16:08):
Somerset, South Homestead and Fate School,
Miami High School, they were able to go to one
of the oldest high schools in Miami, a big high school,
Miami high play on campus and get a big win
3 to 0. Uh, Dylan Zeal's another incredible start pitched
four innings before handing it off to Gabe Leal. They
had six strikeouts, no walks and three hits for the win.

(16:28):
So big win against Miami High. Then they had the
most important game of the week, their conference playoff. They
were able to beat Ransom Everglades to advance to their
baseball conference championship. And since we're late, I could report
that it is the first baseball conference championship for the

(16:49):
Marathon Dolphins and coach Joey Gonzalez, they were able to
get a big win last night, beat

Speaker 2 (16:54):
the Bulldogs.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
They certainly beat,
beat the Bulldogs and they got their first conference championship.
So

Speaker 2 (17:00):
I hear Mason Thornton got hit by a pitch twice.
That was the first thing that, that was reported to
me from their manager.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
We talked about that last week. So they got the
conference championship. Now, this week on Tuesday, they will have
a home game against Somerset Silver Palms in the first
round of the district tournament. So good luck and hopefully
marathon baseball can get their first district win since
1979. 0, the first one. So good luck to them. And, uh,

(17:32):
what we talked about Coral Shores Postseason, their district tournament
is the same as Marathon right now. Um,
the cross is a play game with Somerset South Homestead.
If they win that, they don't count your chickens for their,
when they, when, as you say, when they win that
they will play against Keys Gate, that would be a

(17:54):
good game. And then the winner of that game will
be played in the district championship against the winner of
the marathon Somerset Silver Palms game. So there's a possibility
for a battle of the Keys for the baseball district championship.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
Oh,
that would be great. That was a heck of a
game last time they played. That would be amazing.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
So you, you promise you,

Speaker 2 (18:16):
I'm here to deliver. I'm like the man. That was
a bad. So, um, the ma

Speaker 1 (18:22):
always does sometimes like that just like,

Speaker 2 (18:26):
ok, so, um, Key West and Coral Shores are FHSA,
a district 16, 2, a marathons. One A, so the
two A, um,
championships for their district happened already on the 24th marathon.
Has to wait until May 1st. So we have got
some big news. Qs. High boys track are now the
defending and current district champions, boys track. Yep, two times

(18:50):
and girls. Yes, girls track. Last year was, they were
district champions this year. They, the runner up and, um,
we've got quite a few district champs. Um, We've got,
let's see, Kaylee Mattis Caps is the discus champ.
Uh from Qs high Claire Boysen was first in shot put,
Audrey Smith was first in javelin. Um Clerk Alexander was

(19:12):
first in triple jump. Um Nick, um I can't say
his first name, so Nick Davis was first in pole wall,
obviously and he's, he's right there at just about 15
ft and he's got the school record. I know he
wants to go even higher. So, you know, good job
to him and he's coming off a big injury um to,
that's big and then Jean Louis is the shot put

(19:34):
district champ for Key West. And Noah Mercer got first
in dis uh discus. We do have quite a few other, um,
you know, second places, third places, that sort of thing
here and there. Um Cool Shores didn't have any district
champs for the girls. Uh But they did have one boy,
uh the district champion Xavier Johnson in the 1, 10
high hurdles and he just goes, it's like smooth way.

(19:56):
He goes over those hurdles. It's a,
you know, some kids, like, they hit them and they're
falling and you're, if you're a mom, you're like covering
your eyes, you're terrified. He's smooth. He's awesome. He's fast
and he is the 110 hyper district champion. So, um,
quite a few athletes I believe, I think, um, maybe 17,
they're a bunch of moving on and that'll be in
next week's paper. How many of these guys are moving on,

(20:18):
going to regionals? And a couple of them might get
like in that large spot. But the top four,
the top four in districts move on all. Cuba's highest
relay teams are moving on. I believe Coral Schwarz has
one league team to move on. But you'll see all
about that in the paper. A lot of district champions.
That's
exciting

Speaker 1 (20:36):
news. So, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
Marathon has yet to

Speaker 1 (20:39):
go camp out in your front yard Thursday morning. If
you live in marathon. Yes. And wait for the,
to be delivered. If you're outside of marathon, go get
your paper as soon as you can. So you can see,
be waiting at the, you know, the news will get

(21:00):
so definitely out for that ticket in 1982. What's your
favorite song? Put you on the spot?
Mm.
Oh,

Speaker 2 (21:26):
we go to the track. That's it. No, they're moving
on to regionals and we're waiting for marathons districts. We
do have quite a few favorites to get first. But
I don't want to jinx them. So you, what do
you have in front of
you?

Speaker 1 (21:38):
I have the most important part of the keys of
the week. Who should it be? The editorial group who
picks
this week's athlete of the week is Gabe Leal. Junior
Marathon baseball. He's having one of the best offensive seasons
I've ever seen at marathon high school. He consistently barrels

(22:00):
the bat heart and finds ways to produce when it matters.
Most head coach Joey Gonzalez says about this week's keys
weekly athlete of the week, Gabe Leal, he has been
on top of the leader board all year long. He's pitching,
he's hitting, he's garnering attention from college scouts and he
strikes fear into
the hearts of the opponents. He's hitting a blistering 431

(22:24):
this year and he's also like father, like son, we
went over last week. He has a 1.000 fielding percentage
which means he hasn't made an error all year and
he is playing catcher. He's top in the district in RBIs,
third batting average and number two and wins as a pitcher,
he pitches and catches.

Speaker 2 (22:44):
I saw him first base this year too. Does this?
This kid can do everything

Speaker 1 (22:48):
because when he isn't driving in runs or covering the plate,
he's on the mound, delivering the heat to the batters
all around. Great baseball player. Awesome kid doing a great
job doing big things. He is this week's athlete of
the week. So congrats, congrats to Marathon win the conference championship.

(23:10):
Good luck to Marathon defending their district championship. Good luck
