S1 (00:30):
Hi guys. Welcome to our episode of Living Life A
life for you. I am your host, Doctor Veronica Garcia,
and I am joined by a very special person to
my heart because I had the beautiful opportunity of collaborating,
working a lot with her. Uh, Miss Cathy Bannister. Hi, Cathy.
S2 (00:42):
Hey. How are you? I'm so glad to be working
with you.
S1 (00:45):
I'm so happy to have you in the podcast. Welcome
to the podcast.
S2 (00:48):
Thank you. Thank you.
S1 (00:49):
Um, how are you doing?
S2 (00:50):
I'm doing good. I'm doing good.
S1 (00:51):
Yeah. Cathy, you've had a beautiful, long standing relationship with
Life University. So let's start with what your role is
currently and how long you've been alive.
S2 (01:00):
I'm the director of the postgraduate education, which is continuing education. Um,
we do all the sees. The doctors need to renew
their licenses on a yearly basis or bi yearly basis. Um,
I've been doing this for 22 years. I've been in
postgrad for 22 years, so I've been here seeing a
lot of changes over the 22 years. Uh, really great
(01:21):
changes on campus. It's been it's been a great experience.
S1 (01:24):
I love that. And I mean, to be here for
22 years and still go. It has to I hope
that it has to have been a beautiful experience.
S2 (01:31):
And it has.
S1 (01:32):
Been. It's been a I love life university. I've been
involved with university for about 14 years now, on and off,
which is really weird to me for me to say.
S2 (01:39):
But time flies when you're having fun.
S1 (01:43):
Kathy, um, you mentioned continuing education, so let's backtrack. A
lot of times when people don't realize when we graduate,
we take in our boards, we pass them, we apply
for our state licenses. We finally got the piece of
paper that says that we're legally Okay to practice, but
then we also have to maintain it. So tell me
a little bit about what continuing education is.
S2 (02:04):
Well, what the postgrad department does is we apply to
the different state boards for CE credits for different seminars
that are being being presented. And the thing is, the
different boards have different regulations, they have different requirements, they
have different times that you have to have the applications in.
There's different prices for each one. California outrageous $116 per
(02:29):
hour just to apply to California. So a lot of
a lot of people are staying away from applying for
California right now. So we what our department does is
we have to know the changing regulations. We have to
know if they decide they're going to be non-committal, or
they're going from 60 days to 90 days, or changing
their prices from 69 to 129. So we keep up
(02:52):
with all of that. We also put together the life
vision extravaganza, which, um, before it went off campus, was
a tremendous event on campus that took up 13 rooms
on campus, and it was a tremendous amount of people helping. Luckily,
moving it off campus takes a lot of the pressure
off everybody who's working. We still are working really hard,
(03:14):
but we're not putting in 15, 16 hour days and
running like crazy, which, you know, since you have done
it with me.
S1 (03:24):
Um, but like fashion extravaganza, it's such a, an easy
and just beautiful experience because we're surrounded by a lot
of people that I may have graduated with or like, like, uh,
passed by on the hallways when I was in school,
and I was seeing them in practice and checking in
with them, kind of like a homecoming experience. It's really,
really nice. But more importantly, to be able to just
(03:45):
walk into the different rooms. Get all of your CE credits.
S2 (03:49):
In one weekend.
S1 (03:49):
In one weekend. It truly is such a relief.
S2 (03:55):
Like you have such a great price for that. I mean,
over the years it's slowly worked out, but there's more
expenses for us, of course. So. But still, it's the
cheapest place where you can get 2320 five hours of
of CE credit, because usually even the cheapest is $20
a credit. So even if you get it online, it's
still going to cost you more than than coming in,
having all these people around you and feeling the energy
(04:18):
that that you get when you attend this event.
S1 (04:20):
And in addition to to.
S2 (04:23):
The networking.
S1 (04:24):
The. Yeah, in addition to the networking, in addition to
the classes, there's also more events that you guys put
together as well. Like you have different events with the
vendors but also.
S2 (04:32):
Thirsty Thursday.
S1 (04:33):
On Thursday.
S2 (04:34):
Yeah, we have Thirsty Thursday where there's no d'oeuvres and
everybody gets a couple free drinks. And in the vending area.
So you get to go and walk around the vendors
and talk to them instead of your brief few like
half hour break when everybody's trying to talk to them
at the same time and then running back to class,
this gives you more time and it's a more relaxed atmosphere.
And then last year we did the ball on Friday.
(04:55):
That was awesome. Um, this year, of course, there's not
going to be a gala. But then Saturday we have
the event back on campus, which is with our rugby team,
rugby team, team. And then they have the big fireworks
and the beer gardens and lifespan played last year. So yeah.
So it's more than just the sea.
S1 (05:14):
Yeah.
S2 (05:14):
To get people together.
S1 (05:16):
It truly is a homecoming that warms.
S2 (05:18):
Well that's what this actually started out as when I
started here years ago. This big event was our homecoming
and it was called homecoming every year. And it was
until when Doctor Reichman came in that it changed to
to Lyceum, and then it changed to falsify before. And
now it's live. So I've seen a lot of names,
but it's still really a homecoming after all these years.
S1 (05:38):
Amazing. And you can get so all right. We have
different classes regarding different topics, like anything and everything from
ethics and boundaries and, um, coding documentation.
S2 (05:50):
Well, certain things like that are are required for Florida regulations.
They have to have two hours of risk management that
are ethics. Two hours of risk management. That's medical errors
one general risk management, six hours of documentation and two
hours of Florida law. And that's what they have to
get every two years. Georgia you have to get your
four hours of risk management in one Georgia law every year. Right.
(06:12):
And in both Florida and Georgia only and in a
lot of states, you can only get so many hours online.
They limit it. In the state of Georgia, you can
only get ten hours. And and in Florida, you you
and you can only do it if you do all
your online one year. You have to do everything, um,
live the next year. Yeah. So so those are the
kind of things we have to we keep, we try
(06:32):
to keep up with and stuff. And so when we
have alumni calling us going, can you help me with this?
I need to know what do I need to do
or do in the event they come up and said,
I what what am I regulations? What what do I
have to have? That's why.
S1 (06:45):
And you know, you guys bring out the whole knowledge.
S3 (06:48):
Yeah.
S4 (06:50):
Yeah I love that candy.
S1 (06:52):
Um. Tell me. So you mentioned that this year will
have the Thirsty Thursday. We're going to have the, um,
the rugby game at night. But we did have a
date change this year. Right. Because we have now it's September.
S2 (07:05):
It's September instead of October. Yeah. Because we've always done
it during the break for our students. And so the
teachers and students can come, but they're doing renovations down
at the Galleria.
S1 (07:16):
Gotcha.
S2 (07:16):
And when we were looking for a place to have
it in those dates, we couldn't find anywhere for those dates.
And the only dates we could get were those September dates. Yes. So.
S4 (07:25):
So it's a little bit earlier.
S1 (07:27):
But I think it's really awesome because it also is
right hand in hand with Chiropractic's birthday. It is on
Founders Day, September 18th, and it's something that's like, oh,
we I get to spend Founders Day with so many
like minded individuals.
S5 (07:42):
Is really cool. Yeah.
S2 (07:43):
And every year we've been averaging about 1600 doctors that
come every year.
S1 (07:47):
And what's the price range right now?
S2 (07:50):
Uh, Right now it's one seven, it's 149 until July 1st,
and then it goes up to 179. Okay. Unless you're
faculty and staff, faculty and staff get a discount. And
I know they had sent it out once, but if
you need that discount code, just call the post-grad office
and we'll get it to you.
S1 (08:05):
Thank you. That's amazing. Okay. I'm so excited.
S5 (08:08):
Again.
S1 (08:09):
Um, tell me there's other there's other opportunities. Like a
post-grad does so much.
S5 (08:14):
We.
S1 (08:15):
Just love. So let's talk about the other piece, um,
of the other continuing education that you guys do.
S2 (08:20):
Well, we, we do seminars on campus, which are ones
that we do. We do. Uh ccep. The Certified Chiropractic Extremity.
We've been doing that all 22 years. I've been here.
And that's a seven module thing that it's the students
love it and they can do, um, six of them.
There's the seven mods as a student, which is a
discounted price. They only have to do one as a
doctor when they get certified in it. That's amazing. So
(08:43):
and then we have Doctor Ebel who who does a
pediatric one. That's when we sponsor. That's done off campus
twice a year and on on back here in Georgia
twice a year.
S1 (08:53):
This is the PDX.
S2 (08:54):
It's yeah, it's the pediatric experience. And Tony is amazing. Yeah. Anyway. Yeah.
And so and we have sponsored him and they usually
do their second one on campus during live. So they're
always with us as part of that that group too.
So he'll teach and then he'll go and he'll teach
it in his own class at that same week. And
then they're always at the same hotel with us or
(09:15):
on campus with us.
S1 (09:16):
And we have I know that in the past we've
had like an online platform to.
S5 (09:22):
To we still do. Okay.
S1 (09:23):
So tell me a little bit about that online.
S2 (09:24):
That is like the Edu and or you can go
to our website and it says online see. And it's,
it's two and four hour classes. They're broken up into
two hour classes and two hour increments. Because like you
said you know the attention span. You can do two
hours and be good. You can go in, you sign up,
it's $20 an hour. Um, when you go to the website,
(09:45):
you would just pick what state you're in and it
would list all the seminars that are approved for your state,
so you can pick from that list according to your
state and easy. Yeah, if the only thing would be
if you have multiple license, would would be to check
on both states to see which ones will carry over
to both states. And that way you're not doing double duty.
S1 (10:03):
And double.
S5 (10:04):
Payment. Yeah. Or double.
S2 (10:05):
Payment. Right. This way it's the same seminar. Will will
be good for sees in both states. That's that's one
of the biggest things that doctors don't understand is that
we don't apply to every state board because of fees
and and that kind of stuff. So if anybody's ever
going to go to a seminar, please check on the
website to make sure it's approved in your state. Even
(10:27):
though you might like the seminar, you might go to
it thinking you're getting CE credit and not because it
hasn't been applied to. And most states, you can't go
back and apply after it's passed.
S5 (10:35):
Okay.
S2 (10:36):
You know well very few will will.
S5 (10:39):
Allow that will allow that backtracking. Right. A lot of doctors,
a lot of people, a lot of. Right.
S2 (10:43):
And so and that's just the biggest one of the
biggest problems I've seen with it and with us. We
have what's approved, what's pending. And if you're ever, ever
in doubt, just call the office and we'll be more
than happy to help you with anything that that you need.
S4 (10:58):
I love.
S1 (10:59):
That. And if there's anybody that's interested in giving a
class or see us at Life University or at LV,
what's the process for them?
S5 (11:07):
Well, that's.
S2 (11:08):
Usually called a sponsorship. Um, well, at LV is different. LV. Um,
our doctors are either doing it for free. They're giving
their time, or they're being paid just a minimum amount
for traveling and staying in a hotel. Um, or they're
or some of our faculty are being paid or it's
(11:28):
we have, um, sponsors and the sponsors are allowed to
have speakers. Um, of course, we have to approve the
program they're going to teach, but the they're the ones
that pay for their speakers and, and for, for, you know,
for them to come and speak here. So it's it's
kind of a 50 over 50, you know. That's why
(11:49):
sometimes you might see the same speaker the same, you know,
for a couple of years. It's because that's what the
company is putting out. You know, we do try to
ask them for different titles and different information, but things
like documentation with Doctor Sam Collins, it's documentation.
S5 (12:05):
Yeah.
S2 (12:06):
Georgia law is Georgia law. You know, Florida law is
Florida law, you know, so you can only spruce that
up so much.
S1 (12:14):
But we've had over the years really extraordinary speakers like
just glued to your seat, glued to the to to
the present, to the presenter and just absorbing all this information.
So we've had besides those that are just yeah, you
have to check these boxes. Things that change. You have
to know the thing that changed. Like besides those, there's
(12:35):
also the extremely fun ones. Not saying that those are
not fun.
S4 (12:38):
Guys, but.
S2 (12:40):
And we've had some extraordinary ones.
S5 (12:41):
Over.
S2 (12:42):
The last few years.
S5 (12:43):
Yes.
S1 (12:43):
So do we have do you know of anybody that's
coming this year that we don't say?
S5 (12:48):
Well, I know Doctor.
S2 (12:49):
Chestnut's coming this.
S5 (12:50):
Year.
S2 (12:50):
Um, Doctor Isaac is coming this year. Let's see. I
did bring the schedule just in case.
S5 (12:55):
Yeah.
S2 (12:56):
Um, of course we have, like, Dede Harrison. Um, let's see,
I'm trying to think of some new ones. Um, Brett Winchester,
Mitch Malley will be here. Uh, Francis Murphy, like I said,
Doctor Chestnut, um, we have Doctor Leon Lanier. Who.
S5 (13:13):
Amazing.
S2 (13:13):
Yeah.
S5 (13:14):
So every time.
S2 (13:15):
We have people from our research department speaking. And unfortunately,
Doctor Sullivan won't be available, but she's sending in to
two people that'll fill in the place. Mark Ellis, who's
an alumni.
S1 (13:26):
Amazing.
S2 (13:26):
Yep. So? So we have some some good ones this year. Um,
the schedule should be posted soon. I'm still waiting on
some of the titles from the doc, so moving a
little slow, but we're we're getting there. But hopefully I
mean registration is open, so make sure you're going online
and registering.
S5 (13:42):
Yeah.
S1 (13:42):
Before the price goes up. Before the price jump. And
also before the the date of.
S5 (13:47):
The of the.
S1 (13:48):
Purchase. A little.
S5 (13:49):
Bit higher. Yeah.
S1 (13:50):
Understandable.
S5 (13:51):
Yeah.
S1 (13:51):
Um, well, Cathy, thank you so much for your time.
Thank you for, like, all these 22 years of dedication
and loving on the alumni and making sure that we
got all of our ducks in a row so that
we can keep our licenses. That's really nice.
S5 (14:00):
It's my pleasure.
S1 (14:03):
Your department has always been such a pleasure to work
with and just absolute joy. So thank you, thank you,
thank you for everything that you do.
S2 (14:09):
Thank you I appreciate that.
S5 (14:11):
Absolutely.
S1 (14:12):
And we'll see you guys on the next episode of
Living Life a life you. If you need some C credits,
make sure you go to Edu to register for this
event or live event extravaganza.
S5 (14:22):
Yep.
S2 (14:22):
Or you can call the post-grad department. We're always willing
to help.
S1 (14:25):
Well, we'll see you very soon. I hope that we
can see you at Live Action Extravaganza. Have a good day.
S5 (14:29):
Bye bye.
