Speaker 1 (00:00):
And I'm doing good. Yeah, that's feel good to be
but you you have a babble head.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
There's gonna be coming at one at Sofi Stadium.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
What do you think about all that?
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Oh, it's pretty cool, man, just to be honest, obviously
being the old guy, retired now but still kind of
you know, reaping the benefits of what I did when
I played. And it's pretty special, you know, special week
last week, and then fast forward to this week, another
one with my rams man, and it's pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
I'm excited about it.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
So what what has it kind of been like bouncing
back and forth, cause likely living the pet days, coming
back here and everything else.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Well, uh, emotional, overwhelming that time, but I've been enjoying it,
just taking it all in, obviously thinking about the journey
of everything I had to you know, do to you know,
to get myself to a certain point and to be
able to accomplish the things I was able to accomplish
in college inner prose man. So it been emotional for sure,
but to be able to you know, be here with
(00:56):
my family, my loved ones, people that play the huge
part of you know, my success and pushing me to
where I got where I'm at today.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Have been pretty cool. I've been enjoying it.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
So keep you busy in retirement these days.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
I got four kids and a wife and like that,
you know, doing a lot of other things, man, obviously
with my Ready Nutrition company, a development company, a couple
of things we working on and uh I forguts you say,
the film space, so my foundation, So a little bit
of everything, honestly, man, Just really staying busy. I always
tell people I feel like I retired and got more busy,
(01:29):
you know, but it's it's good to be busy, good
to have things in place for a life after football.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
So I've been enjoining it.
Speaker 4 (01:33):
So laid on this city and the way that people
have embraced you in this city. The last ninety nine
we know that was the great one. Now they have
another great one with honoring you. What does that mean
for you, just to be in the city and having
fans really support you and continue.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
To support us.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
I always say I feel like La adopted me, you know,
been here for ten years. My two youngest kids is
born and being raised here, so you know, LA's home too,
you know. And obviously you know I talked about the
you know, when you when you put the body at
working and you accomplish things and you and you know
how hard you work to put yourself at a certain
position and to be able to reap the benefits of that. Still,
(02:10):
you know, being done with the game. Man, it's it's
pretty special. Like anytime somebody, no matter if it's big
or small, honor you.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I I it's it's special, you know. I. I take
nothing for granted. Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
I just try to you know, be in the moment,
enjoyed it, every every second of it. Like I said,
to be able to take this same with my family,
my loved ones, it's even more special. Right to see
my mom and dad over there crying. How priordy are they?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Son?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
See my wife See you don't cry much, but our
eyes was definitely water in the last week. Did she
go my kids? You know, my oldest daughter, my only daughter,
but my oldest kid coming up to me, get me
a hugging, telling me how proud she is of me. Man,
that mean the world to me. So, like I said,
just trying to take it all in, enjoy of the
moment of it.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Man. So like my dad would say, you earned it,
you earned it.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
So Jared Verse talked about your intense workouts. You how
with him during training campra How often do you try
to stay in touch with the young guys and how
important is it for you to impose your.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Your et song. Yeah, I try to reach out the
verse here and there.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Kobe Turner two, obviously he's my guy that played with me,
So you know, I tell him, like, if if you
watching film and I'm free and I can watch film
with you, I'm down and watching.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
I can just be in the back back of the room.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
And you know, if you got a question to ask
for I see something that I can tell you and
help you with, I'm down f th down to do it.
I think the way that while they been playing, the
opportunity that got in front of him is pretty special.
So obviously not not for them to take event now
well to to to take advantage of it. But anything
I can do to tryna help 'em, any words I
can give 'em, they know that I'm I'm here. I
(03:42):
text some guys some time here and there, and if
they they wanna come over to the house get a
work out, they could come. They wanna come watch some
film with me, I'm down with that too. If I'm
if I'm freeing able to do it. Man, I just
wanna see these guys continue to have success and and
hopefully you know, you know, get it done and what
they tryna chase in the compass.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
So what do you think of that young front? That
young group?
Speaker 1 (04:02):
Book tackles that dressers and whatnot as a group.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Been fun to watch man as a fan now watching
on the couch, you know, it's not just the sack numbers,
just the pressure they're putting on the quarterback making them
uncomfortable with getting quarterbacks off. They spot now a lounging
quarterbacks to step into their throws at times. Man, I
think that's the way you want to impact the game
as a pass rusher because I know a lot of
people look at the sacks and the TFLs, but the
pressure the quarterback pressures the quarterback hits, that's a huge.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Part and your team having success.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
And then even on the back end, you know the
second day've been playing lights out, you know these last
four weeks, you know that that defense they don't look
like a young defense to me, no more. Right, look
at a group of guys have been playing with each
other for a while, They know how each other play,
they're playing with confidence and and with it lambman, lambman,
how you say it, lambing lamban lamb And he got
a knack for that, damn ball man. So they got
(04:51):
some pieces to the posles that they need and they're
getting it done.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Man. So obviously it's still a lot of football to
be played.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
But as long as they keep playing consistent football, keep
doing what they doing, man, you know, Scot's the limit
for them. So not sure how much time he.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Spent with Chris Luck, but even from apart, what have
you seen about him in the standard time?
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Been drawing them from stuff you been?
Speaker 3 (05:10):
He he got a bunch of guys. He putting them
in the right position to have success. And and and
they and they clicking. Everything's looking good and they doing
what they need to do for them to you know,
win games.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
And you know, I think they one or two players
away from being undefeated.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
You know, so when you talk about you know, uh NFC,
that's not just the NFC West, just the NFC period.
I think the Rams is the is the top dogs
right now just from the way they've been playing. You know,
I think they, I to be honest, the best team
in the National Football league right now. But again, it's
a lot of football to be played. That gotta keep playing,
keep playing consistently, keep doing what they doing.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
So interesting.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
Players have often talked about how you set an example
that they still s you know, strive to to meet
here in the facility. So what does it mean to
have that impact not just you know, in terms of
the production that you had, but in terms of the
work that you put into.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Together there, well, you know, just being here.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
And obviously the way I worked, the way I went
about my day to day of just studying film, taking
care of my body, you know, keeping my body in shape,
preparing my body to stay strong.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Man. And a bunch of these guys play with me.
They seen it. And you know, I was a guy
that led by example.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
And you know when you tend to do that, people
tend to follow your lead and and kind of you know,
do the same things you do to so the s.
You know, I just text Love two days ago, like,
is the guy still standing after doing the extra work
like we did? He said, it's not the same, but
they doing extra work. I said, as long as they
doing something that that's that's all that mattered, man, And
and it's good to hear that they still you know,
putting an extra time in in the weight room, in
(06:40):
a film room, doing what they need to do to
be successful.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
Man.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
And it's good that I kind of left my little
mold on 'em and they kind of like, you know,
following through with it.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
So is there a person of yourself that you left behind?
Speaker 1 (06:50):
And then, huh do you see parts of yourself that
you left.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
The bid and that I would hope, So, yeah, you
see some of 'em, you know, I I I hope
some of that.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
That means it's l you know, whiped off on that
D line too, huh.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
And I see that a little bit with you know,
I didn't get to play with Verse, but I got
to talk to him be around him a little bit,
and I know how much he liked to talk. So,
you know, so they they you know, I see some
of it, yes, for sure.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
Moments where you find yourself really missing the game and
how do you handle.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
Whenever that ch does come up?
Speaker 3 (07:19):
No, I honestly, to be honest with you, I never
had no itch after I retired to like, gosh, I
wanna come back, I wanna play football. Still, you miss
things from the game and it's for me. It's it
was it's not really playing the game. It's like being
in the locker room, hanging with the guys, watching film,
cracking jokes, more to karate with the fellas. But I'm
(07:39):
I'm I'm okay, man, I'm I'm fulfilled. I'm happy where
I'm at in my life right now and what I'm doing.
And you know, obviously, everything I do I strived for greatness.
You know, obviously I felt like I checked that off
of football and in the next chapter of life, just
transitioning all that into what I'm trying to do and
build right now.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Man.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
So I love the game of football, I just don't
love playing the game of football no more so.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
At one point, you.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
Couple might know, at what point in your final season
did you know that.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
It was gonna be your line.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
I knew from when I first walked through the field
of camp this would be my last year. It's obviously
I didn't wanna share with you guys. I ain't wanna
be a distraction, but my family knew.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
I knew.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
I'm pretty sure couple of the coaches I know, Sean
I had a feel for it, cause we had conversations
prior to me coming back. But you know, I kind
of knew from the start of the season and what
it was gonna be. That's why my last year, I
just tried to enjoy it every moment of it, you know,
taking it all in, even in bad games of good games,
but you know, just tryna take it in like a
kid playing all over again.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
And I I felt like I did.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
That, man, and and I had a lot of fun
my last season, Man, to be with a young group
that had a lot of success, to see them guys
grow over the years.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
It's it's pretty cool to watch 'em now.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
So how much of the game do you still keep
up with? I know, you say from the counts, but
you can keep up more with the college game or.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Nah, I'm I'm I watched the Rams, I t I
watched the stillers a little bit. I try to only
full I'm really watching now is a RAMS game. I
might go to some highlights here and there and see,
but I I I try to watch my Rams, you know,
every time they up there playing. Man, put my RAM
shirt on my RAM sweatsuit and you know, might have
some chicken wings or something like that.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
So, uh, it's a lot different.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Than my nor my my normal sundays when I played,
But I'm a joint with the new sundays I'm having
too with the family and watching my Rams play and
and and the way they winning right now, Man, it.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Been it been real fun up. So what does it
mean to I only played for what the protracts.
Speaker 6 (09:29):
Put you through.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
I feel great, you know, the coming coming to the Rams,
Saint Louis Rams for two years and then transition here
and obviously change the programmer the organization around and start winning.
It's pretty special. Not not everybody get the opportunity to
do that. So for me to have the opportunity to
do that and be a part of, you know, kind
of changing the organization, it means a lot, you know,
(09:53):
cause it was a lot of work, man, a.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
Lot of good days, bad days.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
But you know, at the end of the day, man,
I take nothing from granted, so it was always a blessing.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
So let us up Saint Louis to hear how you
see now almost ten years later, la.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
Embrace this RAMS team.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
You win.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
People tend to you know, you, people want to see
points b scored, you win games, and you know, to
see you know where we came from where you know
it might be wasn't a full stadium to a packed house.
So how many people was there last week? It was
seventy five thousand pacts. That's pretty cool, man. Only can
remember like just that atmosphere feeding off that type of crowd. Man,
it's pretty cool to watch the support from the city,
(10:35):
you know, and and what the RAMS is doing.
Speaker 6 (10:37):
So we talked to mcfay earlier this week about your guys' relationships.
She said that one of the things he really appreciated,
the cherished was that you let he let you let
him into his into your personal life. Just how did
that you know, connection, uh, why was that connection.
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Important to you?
Speaker 6 (10:52):
And and how has that uh still maintained even in retirement.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Well, you know, we we all deal with things in
their life.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
I guess everybody don't get to see it cause they
just know the football side of things. But a lot
of personal things that happen in your life, and you know,
it's a lot of tough times. Sometimes you gotta have
some conversations with some people. And I was able to
sit down and have conversations with Sean and and he understood.
And it was it was never like it was always
family first. It was like, forget football right now, do
whatever you gotta do to handle your family situation, and
(11:21):
do what you do what you gotta do.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
Man.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
And and for me, I met the world right to
be able to have somebody I can sit down and
talk to other than just football, just what's going on
in my life period. You know, I was sitting in
his office a lot, cryd with him a bunch, So
you know, they have that relationship that I have with him,
not just as a coach, but you know, I he's
family to me, right, you know, I wanna continue to
see him have success. That's it's more fun to watch
(11:44):
them guys him, uh, Matthew and all them guys be
out there winning because I wanna see them winn. I
wanna see them have success. So you know, I he Yes,
he was my coach, but you know he he's family
to me.
