Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kind of scene from you knowing working together now, you know,
especially just simpt to.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Situation books.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Yeah, been pleased with him, you know, through two days
of PADS, I thought, I thought our first path to
day was as physical of a practice as as we've
had since I've been here, at least, And then I
thought I followed through yesterday.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
So that's first and foremost.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
I think all the working in combination, working in unison,
and then jelling as a group will come with time
and practice.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
But seeing that physicality was was pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Is Humphries a guy that you guys could plug and
play and given.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
His absolutely and any time you got a guy that's
played as much football as he has, at least the
one thing you do know as they're learning offense that
Sundays aren't gonna be too big for him, right, you know,
It's not like getting a rookie year trading for a
second year guy, dosn't you know? It's this guy's played
a lot of good football, you know, and he's fit
right in with the guys. He's yelling with the guys
in terms of just in the locker room, which which
is big.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
So yeah, there's no doubt he's he's proven. Last time
close to this un of the year was when Puka
hurt his knee and missed a lot of reps. What
are you saying in terms of his growth and development?
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yeah, yeah, I mean I kind of said in OTAs
like I just I think going into year three, you
know a lot of times there's a big jump between
year one and year two, but sometimes it's year two
to year three in my.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
Opinion, where they just start to get really comfortable. I mean,
it's his third year in.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
The system, you know, I feel like he is in
Probably you'd have to ask him, but it certainly looks
like to me the best shape he's been in since
he's been here.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Not that he's been out of shape. I just think
he's in the best shape that he's.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Been and that's gonna do wonders for him, and my
opinion already has I think he's he's stacked days.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
I think every single day has been a little bit
better for him, which is what you want. And like
where he's at, you know you'll continue to get better.
Your comment on cut off about fields pop, So.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
He just he understands football, he understands stems, he understands angles,
He has a great feel for space, a knack for space,
his route temple changes, He's catching the ball great.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
He's fearless in terms of just you know, going over
the middle and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Obviously, that'll have to come to fruition when we get
into real games, when safeties and linebackers can actually you know,
light you up and stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
But I think from his college film and what I've
seen from his demeanor, I don't think that's gonna be
a problem.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
And probably most importantly, he's just fitting in with guys.
You know, he's he's a very mature rookie, real excited
about mom.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Where is do you feel like? Sets? And Ben has
progressed compared to this time last year. Ms the time
you get.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
No, he's just like I said the other day, and he's, uh,
he's grown up so much. You know, he's in such
a good spot mentally, David going in. The quarterbacks have
done an awesome job collectively of just being one cohesive group,
you know, and learning off each other, and the meetings
that we have, the discussions that are just collaborative and organic.
(03:01):
He's had great command of the huddle compared to what
it used to be but what I think is even
better with that ball staff.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
He's just playing so fast.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
He has a knack and you can see it from
his college film and it's coming through you know here
in year three is a knack of just space and
feeling space when to you know, speed up his drops,
when to tempo it down. But probably what's been most oppressive,
particularly the first few days when he was going against
the one defense a lot that pockets clapped. But he
just knows where his outlets are, like just hey, don't
make a bad play worse.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
And he's done a great job of that.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
You know, he just continued to stack days and he's
gonna get a lot of ops in the preseason, which will.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Be great for him. Mike, can't you talk about this system?
I'm curious because the league is always evolving and you're
trying new things. Is that evolution and experimenting? Is that OTAs?
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Is that? Here?
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Think it's a combination, you know, I mean there's we're
humans too, you know, we don't want to say we
get bored, but we like to try new things, you know,
so you go in with foundationally. You know, obviously what
our rams offense could be based on what our players
are stuff like that. But then you start to figure
some things out with you know, what they can do.
Let's try this, let's try that. You know, this look
(04:11):
pretty cool, it's work something off of that. So yeah,
I mean I just think, you know, again, you're gonna
you're gonna stick someone in your wheelhouse right now, as
we're obviously still installing kind of the base menu, if
you will, but as it gets kind of more and more,
you just like to play around some things, tink over
some things, and see what our guys can do without
you know, being the jack of all trades master or none.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Just to follow up on that, when when a guy
like seventeen is here and ten is gone, is that
a big change? Is that a little change?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Is it not much of a champ? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
I mean it's it's one really really historic good receiver
for another really really good historic receiver.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
But they're but they're different, right, I mean, there's you know,
I don't want to start using basketball references, but you know,
it's Anthony Davis and Luca you know, and they like,
I mean, I'm not saying one or the other, but
they're both really dang good players.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
And you know, you're gonna use them in different ways.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
And you know, I think we know what what Coop's
specialty was, and and just you know how his mind
worked and the numbers that he's put up in this
uniform and and then likewise with Tay and and everywhere
he's been in the numbers he's put up. So, yeah,
they're both receivers, but they're very, very different. The way
we're gonna use them is different.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
I tell you said that one thing the young receivers
have asked him a lot about is the way.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
How he reads coverages and how that impacts choice.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Routes and.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
What is it about the way that Tante does those
two things like that say such.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
As, yeah, I think I know me personally when I
talk to a guy if he's running and say his
first choice route, it's like they find your ISO, find
your one on one, and you work off of him, period,
like you work off the man in front of you,
and if that man and everything just parts ways.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
There's probably some sort of don't sit.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
It down, just giving them the basic like this is
what you need to know in this moment, and now
let's go rep and the let's just see how they feel, right,
there within those little minimal coaching points and then we
can coach you after we get four or five six
different reps. And you get a guy like Tay who's
been doing this for a long time, and you know
he'll take it a step further.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Like you know, I kind of get scared when he's saying, hey,
see what's in there and if they're getting cleared out
and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
But that is the next level that I think players,
particularly guys like take and you know, pass that knowledge
on to a lot of these receivers or eligible's tight ends,
what have you that you know, I don't want to
say sometimes we're scared as coaches to.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Do that, but you again, you just want to overwhelm them.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
You want to do it with practice and then you
kind of you know, see who has that feel and
who doesn't.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Winnington seems to have a more defined role in the offense.
What has he improved on? What's the vision for him?
Speaker 3 (06:50):
And then to think of time, Yeah, I don't I
don't know if he has a more defined role because
I thought last year is a rookie, we put him
in a lot of situations that you wouldn't necessarily put
in rookies. We moved him around. He's a very smart dude.
He cares about this game a lot. He's freaking awesome
for chasing the special teams. You know, he's playing good
enough at receiver that you wouldn't need to throw him
(07:11):
out there at special teams.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
But he's too valuable for them as well, you know.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
So he's a huge vital piece for our football team
because of everything I said, But.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
What sticks out most of him, this dude's just flat
out tough mentally and physically. And you know you'll you'll
ride with guys like Jordan Winnington. Jordan plays hunder terms up.
What kind of impression has he made through the first
couple of days of practices year. Do you want to
tackle on Garrett? I sure won't. No, he's uh, you
(07:41):
know again, it's not live right now. They're thudding and
stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
So in some aspects that's disadvantage defense because of obviously
the target point stuff like that and protecting your teammates.
But man, this guy's got a great body leading to him.
He's got a great deveanor back there. I don't know
if he's mad at me or if he just likes football.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
Wants the ball, honest hands.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
So he's another guy, like a lot of these rookies,
you just can't wait to see when the bullets are
live come August in those preseason games, you know, especially
for backs, right because again kind of got a feel
for what receivers and stuff we're gonna be. But for backs,
I mean, they're carrying it between those tackles more than
they're not, right, and that's not always a fun place.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
And unless you're kind of you know, you like that life.
So he likes that life.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Also got the impact of the landa just from the
offensive side of.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Coaching defense stuff. Yeah, he's uh, he's a cool dude.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
You know.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Obviously Jimmy Lake was with him in Atlanta, you know,
so you kind of got a little little knowledge of
him before he got in. But you could see the
command he has back there. He's got a great energy
about him. It's like it's like that really cool leadership
of just like you know, hey, three to four wards
the defense when they come out or maybe after, you know,
we get a big player.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
Or something like that. He just got something small to
say to those guys, I know.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
He said, hey, we're gonna get a ball out here
at some point just talking to defense, and sure enough,
two plays later he gets a punch out, something he
does as well as anybody in this league right now.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
So that's pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (09:04):
And then what else sticks out is just he'll you know,
you can see when he has a good feel for
kind of our formations through a practice, stuff like that,
if he kind of feels a lineman leaning or something
like that, hey, run pass, he's not afraid to trigger.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
And he liked that from guys.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
You know, he's testing himself out here in July, getting
himself ready for September. But I think we're lucky to
have him in the leadership. He's bringing right now and
he's gonna be a good player. Thanks guys, ye tak
care y' Now you.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
Have a year, you know under your belt in this role.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
How was your approach to coaching and changed? You know,
it's like another lapper on the track.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
You've gone through the experiences before. It's really just it's
just it's honestly everything. It's you know, your process of
how you're gonna get ready for practice, what you need
to get ready for you understand. And it's really been
a year with these guys too. Understanding all the bullets
that you need to get through a season or to
get through a few, you know, and understanding who your
players are, trying to work those trying to have the
(10:03):
strength of those players of what you want to emphasize,
and you know, really starting from that.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
But it's really just you know, the process. It's a
lot cleaner. You know what you have to get done.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
You know, you've had a lot around it, so you know,
whether it's good experience or bad experience, as long as
as long as you've learned from what you're growing and
gladly that's.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
What we've done.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Would have been the fairly impressions if they kids, Oh
he's a stud I mean just like he was and
you and you would expect as you know, a big
physical presence like that, you know, all through atas as
far as communication and and he's heavy on.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
Contact and obviously now with pads on a lot more
direct downhill runs. That's really you know, kind of his game.
And you know he's he's become one of the leaders
of the defense. And he's such a vocal guy. He's
a glue guy. He can organize the whole defense. You
can put a lot on his plate, He's always in
the right spot, and and yeah, you just feel how
physical he is. Obviously, I'm sure a bunch of guys
talked about is you know how he punches at the ball,
(10:56):
and I think a lot of guys are falling in
his footsteps.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
So, you know, we're really happy to have what was
Lee undershow report he got from Jimmy Laco. It was good.
We had a couple guys that were with him. David
Goon was with him.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah, I think his rookie year, maybe a second year
in Atlanta, and then Jimmy Adam last year and Jimmy
exactly what he's been. They talked about, you know, what
a guy he was in the locker room, the type
of player he was, and how he's gonna be in
the right spot all the time, how big and physical
he is, and yeah, so you know it definitely take
Jimmy Scott reporting that one first.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
What do you think about that lap around the track
a year ago? And Kobe Turner and what he did
in the year that some spot, Well did you do
that without Aaron Donald?
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Was definitely what he learned about him.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
He didn't you stand here today that is there anything.
Speaker 4 (11:41):
That he didn't know a year ago.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
He's just such a consistent person, like whether it's talking
on the field, Like if you watch him playing and
play out on the field, he doesn't take any snaps off.
He has some really really great snaps, but he barely
has any bad snaps. He's playing hard every single play.
But if you go to the meeting rooms and when
Gift asked the question it could be the simplest question,
he's the.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
One speaking up, asking it right away or answering it
right away.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
And same thing anytime we do a walk through, he's
the one making the communication, making all the calls. He's
so loud, he's just so consistent every day. So you know,
he's been the same person since he's been here. It's
just obviously naturally just with more experience being a captain
last year, just taking on a little bit more of
a vocal role. But to me, he's just a consistent person.
That's really one of the best people football players and
(12:25):
people I've ever been around.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
What what when is to the decision to have a
Kello signed during the offseason rather than, you know, than
training camp, And what do you think he brings.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
To that second area? Yeah, that's really more of a
question as far as the timing of it for you know,
for last or for Sean or anything like that. But
you know, I know ust on defense, you know, we
we love a Kellow and you know, I think you know,
we saw the way he finished the season with us
last year and.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
How we operate with him on the back end.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Uh, you know, kind of like Quintin Lake and Lambman
where he's one of those guys where guys just play
calmer and.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Better when when they're in there with it, he communicates.
He's such a bet.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
He's like the savvy leader, the veteran. You know, he's
almost like the Yoda of that room if you know
his personality. So you know we've been wanting him, you know.
Speaker 2 (13:08):
The whole time. And you know, as far as the
timing or anything, I'm not really sure that the defensive
facts you know, have different objectives every day.
Speaker 1 (13:16):
But is there kind of an overall emphasis for that
position group during training camp or an area that you.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Want to see improved this season.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
It's always taking the ball away if you if you
just said as a single group, but there is obviously
a lot of different things that they're gonna be working
whether safeties, corners, nickels or anything like that as far
as specific things to get better at every single day.
And that's why Quentin Lake's a stud. But every single day,
you know, it's the ball, you know, takeaways, the ball mindset,
and you know, I would say that thing as a
group is something that's emphasized.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Every day, just as Stewart's progress.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
So more he's been stud you know, he came in
he had a little bit, you know, when he came
in after the draft, he had a little bit of
an issue with his hammy, you know, so he had
to do some rehab and so it just took him
a little bit to get going through atas and stuff.
And he was a guy we always said, you know,
the guys we talked to at Michigan and everything and said, hey,
wait till you get.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
The pads on with him, he's going to come to life.
And you saw that on his tape in college.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
He's a great rusher, but he's also a tough, tough
guy in the run and you know, it doesn't take
any plays off and he's been that so far.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
It seems like Tyler Davis has ray saw eyebrows so far.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
In this game, like what if he said yeah, as
And it's really he's just continued to what he did
last year.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
He played really really well last year. The fun thing
about the offseason.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Is you know, you go back and you look at
all your cutups, you look at all your things and
all these different instances, and you're able to watch it
a lot, a lot closer, you know, you're not necessarily
self scouting or anything like that, and watch the guys
and he was all over those tapes and playing really well.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
So you know, we really thought he was good last year.
During the season, I think.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
We gained an even more appreciation the closer we watched him,
and he's just continued.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
To do that.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
Is there anyone's progress that's surprised you over the course
of what is your training cap.
Speaker 4 (14:56):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
I don't want to say surprised.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
I think, you know, a lot of guys are are
doing really well and you know, kind of being consistent
and you know, taking it day by day.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
You know, I think you know, some of the new
guys with with Pouta.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
Ford and with Landman, those guys and Forbes and you know,
have been a uh, it's been fun to kind of
ing integrate them within our system and into our team
and into our culture, you know.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
So it's been fun to go. You know, the other guys,
you know, you've kind of been with for a year,
and a lot of them, you know, most all of them,
really just continuing a girl, taking it day by day.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Awesome, Thanks guys, awesome, So thank you guys for so
much having
