Speaker 1 (00:00):
Day obviously a little bit heavier run, but there was
a lot of good things. I thought, you know, the
physicality but still being smart to protect each other was
exactly what we were looking for, and so it was
a step in the right direction. I thought, you know,
really defensively, I thought they did an excellent job today.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Any update on Matthew or Kyroene negotiations.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
No updates.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
You know, Matthew will be week to week and so
you know, I'll, uh, it'll be the same for the
rest of the week on that. And then as far
as Kyen, you know, again, you know, had a lot
of good dialogue with you know, Matthew, Sharon and I
talked to Drew and his brother the other day and
you know, it's it's very healthy conversations, and I give
him a ton of credit for the way that they've
approached it.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
And so, but no, no new updates on that.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
Regard the moment that you guys are different.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Today, well, I think I think what was good is that,
you know, you're putting the pads on, You're starting to
activate some more schemes not exclusive to just some of
the things that we're activating without pads on, and so
I thought guys you know, had a good bounce in
their step. I thought, you know, like I mentioned, I
think the defensive guys, you know, I think Nate Laman's
leadership is showing. You know, you really felt Jared Versus

(01:13):
presence today, but overall, really pleased with the defense.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
And I thought there was just good effort all around.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
But you definitely felt the energy, the bouncing their step
and they came ready to go.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Poon Afford, Kobe Turner, you know, Fisk.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
You know, I thought all those guys be why you know,
they did an excellent job today.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Lazer said that.

Speaker 5 (01:31):
He considers his team one of the more mentally strong.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
Things in the league, especially because of what you guys
had to go through last year.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
When it comes to the.

Speaker 5 (01:39):
Young guys and preparing, like for adversity, the ups and.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Downs, how do you try to challenge your players?

Speaker 1 (01:44):
I think you tried, you know, I think every year
is a new year. You know, there's so many different pieces.
But I do think that you know, some of the
examples and experiences that a lot of these guys that
are on this team have had can't shape you. And
so I think you try to cultivate and create atmosphere
and environment where we're creating good to be able to.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Be more mentally resilient.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
I think the more that you put yourself in those
stressful situations, the better equipped you are to be able
to handle it and stay in some of those uncomfortable
moments and then do the next right thing. And so
that's something that's going to be important. We're in the
process of being able to shape that out. I appreciate
Jay's uh, you know, opinion on that, and we're continuing
to strive to do that every single day.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
But I love this group. I really love, you know,
the people.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
It's always about the people and these players, these coaches
are all made of the right stuff, and how we
come together and handle the inevitable storms is going to
be the separator for us.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
The synergy coming together, especially with the younger players on
the squad, to be able to enforce what you guys
go through in the film room and you guys practice,
get how you're on the field.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
I think the best thing about it, Nick, is is
that our our veteran leaders model the way and seeing
is better than anything that we could say. You try
to be able to set an expectation and understanding of
what is you know, what are we looking for day
in and day out? But how accountable are we and
that's coaches, players alike. How do we continue to stack
blocks and understand that, you know, let's just be where

(03:01):
our feed er planning and continue to move forward. And
I've been really pleased with the overall just leadership, especially
with a lot of these guys that have accumulated experience.

Speaker 6 (03:09):
When you're evaluating the offense and the defense in these settings,
how do you determine what success looks like for each
side of the ball, understanding factors like you know, testing
your rules or maybe guys trying to do for different
things from a pass our standpoint, whatever it may be.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
It's a great question. You know.

Speaker 1 (03:22):
I think there's a beautiful torment as a head coach
because you know, I can decide whether I'm I'm happy
with whoever won the down or pissed off at whoever lost.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
So but I think what we try to do is
set up.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
You know, those competitive situations and you know, we have
a familiarity with what we're trying to do tactically, and
I think it is important to be able to test
the rules. I think it's important to understand the etiquette
that we're looking forward to be able to push the
envelope but not leave ourselves susceptible to injuries. Thought the
guys towed the line in a good way today, but
I think it's an everyday deal. It really just depends
on what our focus and concentration was first day, and

(03:57):
pads were always going to be a little bit more
heavy run emphasis. I thought the defense did an excellent
job of being able to handle that, and you know,
we'll continue to learn, but you know, really every single
day is an opportunity for us to learn, and I
think when you go from period to period, there's different
stressors that we're trying to evaluate, knowing where the hard
down is, whether that's on offense or defense.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
When you're seeing at a receiver from here one year
or two, what specific areas can you see the most
including that.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
You know, I don't know that there's any specific area
as much as just continuing to improve your game, and
that's not exclusive to receivers, Sarah.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
I think that's really just for any player.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
And when you've got conscientious guys like we do, when
you've got guys that work hard, that enjoy their craft
and understand what kind of work and what kind of
rhythm and routine do I need to put in to
be able to move myself forward.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Guys inevitably are going to get better.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
You know, those reps accumulate over time, and so just
looking to take steps and whatever that is, you know,
no different than Stu's question. You know, whether that's you know,
if you're talking exclusively about a receiver, is that your routecraft?
Is that your ability to understand what your run responsibility are,
the approach angles that we want to be able to take,
you know, what coverages are we hunting up so you
can understand the antentna some of these plays, And so

(05:08):
I could go on and on, but it's really about
intentionality and then just continuing to work your craft and
be accountable and coachable.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
It looks like Hunter was getting a lot of opportunities,
not just with the twos but with some with the ones. Sure,
what's kind of is he going to have like a
long runway for evaluation for you guys?

Speaker 4 (05:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (05:26):
You know, I think you know, we had a lot
of carries today, so Blake got some as well.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
But I thought you saw jar Quees do an excellent job.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
You know, he's heavy, he's got a great body, lean
and even though we're not truly tackling, you can feel
that he is heavy through the whole. You know, he's
got a really good demeanor. Man, he just kind of
stare a hole through you. But he is uh, you know,
he's continuing to show improvement. I think Kyroen's done a
great job setting the tone. I've been really pleased with Blake,
Korm and jar Ques definitely showed.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Really well today.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
But I think you'll see that, you know, Ron does
a really good job of being able to mix those guys.
I wouldn't look too far into it other than you know,
we had a lot more runs than maybe what you
guys have seen in the acclamation period, and that was
kind of part of the intent with just the first
day in Pats.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
A couple of boys, a couple of different spots. If
you thought about his first great year, dam yeah you're
talking about McColo.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Yeah, I mean, really same thing that you saw him
do a great job with last year at him and
he's so valuable, he's so versatile. He can play safety,
can play the dime linebacker. I mean you look at
when we played Seattle last year. The first game, he
was playing linebacker on early normal down in distances and
taking on guards when they're easily climbing to them uncovered.
And he just one of those guys that, you know,
what's cool is I think about when you guys asked

(06:36):
me about different players.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
These are people you don't bet against.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
You know, they just show their value, their grown men,
their mature beyond their years.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
That's exactly how Tank mccolla came in last year.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
And I think there's certain guys that just have a
knack for being in the right place at the right time.
He was doing that at Tennessee. It's not by mistake
that he had the ball production that he did last year.
And he's made of the right stuff and I love
what he's about, and he's just continued to to get.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Better and to really show his value to this football team.

Speaker 6 (07:04):
Defensive one, to be a catalyst for this team.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
You know, these guys are the real deal. We know
that's going to be a really important factor for us.
I thought they had an excellent day to day. I
think when you look at it, you know there's a
lot of guys that have accumulated really good experience. I
think Gift Smith, Joe Caniglio, and Drew Wilkins do a
great job and really as up front, you know, we
talk about how important it is for those guys to
be able to set the tone for the second and
third levels.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
It's about all eleven playing as one.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
But I've been really pleased with the growth the improvement
of those guys. Kobe Turner, going into his third year,
has really just done a great job of naturally leading,
and I think you can expect to see, you know,
the same thing from Byron Young. Really excited about adding
Punea Ford, and then with Jared and Byron and Braden
being able to go into their second year, that's a
big deal for us. Tyler Davis is another guy that

(07:50):
I think deserves to be mentioned because he has really
shown why he's a total stud and a guy that's
going to be a major factor.

Speaker 6 (08:00):
Saturday, you emphasized that making each other better.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
Yeah, And I just want to know how you think
they responded today.

Speaker 1 (08:07):
I think they always respond really well. I think the
important thing for us as coaches is to provide.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Clarity for what we're looking for him.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
You know, in a lot of these instances, they go
against each other so often we talk about towing the line,
but not you know, leaving ourselves susceptible to unnecessary injuries.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
These guys have always responded. I love this group.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
I love working with these players and these coaches, and
I'm very grateful for how receptive they are to those
types of things. There's always gonna be things that we're
trying to be able to, you know, push the envelope
on and improve, but I was really pleased with how
they responded before the two minutes Earli the other day.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Jerry and Kendrick blew at his knee a year ago
last week, and I heard you complimenting him a couple
of days ago.

Speaker 5 (08:43):
How has he responded to being away for a year
and what could he contribute the.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
Yeah, he's done a good job, Greg.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
I think when you look at it, as you know,
I don't don't bring that up. Man, it's a bad
but but he has you know, he's he's handled himself
really well, and he's you know, he's got great instincts,
great concept trigger.

Speaker 3 (08:59):
He's worked really hard.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
I mean when you when you look at it and
you see the amount of time and effort that goes
into even getting yourself back and even stronger than before.
He can play the star position inside, he can play
outside corner. He's really smart and understands, you know, what's
going on big picture. But he's one of those guys
you know, his teammates love him. He just loves the
game and he's got a nice way about being able

(09:22):
to go compete and been really pleased with the steps
that he's taking. You Aubrey does such a great job
with the back end along with coach Beek and Mike Harris. Okay,
thanks guys, and it's getting.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
Out of Yeah, it feels incredible. I mean, this is
the sport of football. You feel that we're getting closer
and closer to Week one versus Houston, So it's incredible.
We get to, you know, execute a little bit more
of our stunts, get a little deeper into our playbook.

Speaker 5 (09:46):
But yeah, yeah, we're.

Speaker 4 (09:47):
Getting it gone out there. The energy, i mean the
energy of the fans too, is just contagious. So loving
it and I'm excited to get closer and closer back
to week one. Anyone to stand out to you first
day at DUNTS, I mean, you know you always got
a sh out the guys on the defense poona really
like you saw his worth today and you know, I
was over there trying some of the things that he

(10:08):
did and not to too much success, but I'm gonna work
on it. But just the way that he commands attention,
the way that he defeats double teams, and then obviously
has a lot of pass rush ability that's gonna be
able to help us as well, and that's shown on
the other days, but today was run heavy, and man,
he showed up today really big. And then obviously, I
mean you guys saw and probably hurt him. But of
course eight showed up again today. So just super excited

(10:30):
to see those guys continue to show up. And then
I mean talk about the duo of our linebackers right now,
lamb Man and Omar. The way that the way that
Lambman commands, you know, the huddle, the way that he's
getting punch out opportunities, the way that they're fitting up
the run. I mean, I'm ecstatic, if you can't tell already,
I'm ecstatic about you know, what this defense is gonna
be and ultimately how it's gonna help this team win
football games.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
McDavis praising Tyler Davis.

Speaker 5 (10:53):
What have you seen from him with his real he
is consistent. I mean, let me take this up.

Speaker 4 (10:58):
Sorry, I hate how it looks at that, but no,
Tyler Davis is one of the most consistent guys year around.
I mean he was in all the time this all season.
I'm working out with him with Fist, you know, with Puna.
But when you see the technical aspect, I mean, we
have a lot of guys who are not you know,
the biggest guys, but really, to be able to succeed

(11:18):
at this level, you have to have stellar technique. And
the way that he plays double teams, the way that
he plays on the inside of his toes, the way
that he strikes blocks. I mean that's everything that you want.
And really, I mean the top four right now of
our d line room, I mean we're all practically interchangeable,
and he's one of those top four. So I'm excited
to continue to go to work with him. And I
mean that guy shows up day in and day out,

(11:39):
and he's consistent.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
You know exactly what you're gonna get.

Speaker 3 (11:43):
What benefits is that going to the group, It.

Speaker 5 (11:45):
Brings a lot of benefits.

Speaker 4 (11:46):
I mean when you think about so for me, my
journey last year I started off taking basically every snap,
and once it got to third downs, I didn't have
as much juice. But to be able to have guys
who can hold it down like Puna, like TD, who
can really own the run and who really uphold the
standard that we have in that D line room. Now
we have guys that are able to take snaps on

(12:07):
the early downs, keep us fresh, you know, for past
rushing opportunities, and then really when you see those guys
get to work on past rush as well, if me
or Fist needed to take some of the early downs
as well.

Speaker 5 (12:16):
You know, you swap it out. It's interchangeable.

Speaker 4 (12:18):
So we really have a great group of guys and
you can plug and play whatever position. I mean, another
thing that comes to mind with Tyler Davis, but also
with all of our guys's position flexibility. I mean, we're
playing the three, the two, the shade, the five, the four,
it doesn't matter. And so all of our guys take
ownership of that, and I'm excited to see how that

(12:39):
translates on the field, how that keeps us fresh, and
ultimately how that ends up, you know, with us doing
a better job in the run game and obviously get
more Sacks as well.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Coach mentioned that you're a leader of this group here
only in year three.

Speaker 6 (12:50):
How do you feel to be somebody has in such
a talented group that.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
Is so good.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
Yeah, it feels really empowering. And then also it's a
it's a big responsibility. But what I've felt all this camp,
and really as it's built up into this camp, and
really as the season last year progressed, is that it's
not just me who's leading. You know, everybody has their
own individual ways. I mean, you think of the way
that q obviously Q is was one of our captains

(13:17):
last year, the way that he leads, the way that
he commands. You think of the ways that Cam Curl
leads and commands by just the way that he shows
up and does his work, by the way that he
owns his technique. He's in the right spot all the time.
And you can go all throughout our defense and now,
I mean there's different guys who bring energy, there's different
guys who bring that mentality, and so we're all, you know,
one unit together. But it definitely means a lot for

(13:38):
me to be the head of the Snake and that's
a big responsibility. So I gotta I gotta stay on
my p's and q's, and I'm excited about that.

Speaker 5 (13:46):
I mean that keeps me going to be able to
lead this group.

Speaker 4 (13:49):
Like I can't be slacking, I can't not be making plays,
I can't notot be producing because this group.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
Is too talented and we have way too much fire.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
So so does it mean that this group is so
talented at such a young age and there's so many.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
Of you guys?

Speaker 5 (14:00):
Yeah, I think it's a special thing, right.

Speaker 4 (14:02):
I mean there's guys who might get into the league
and you know, might get to that vet status and
want to take some days off or need to take
days off for their bodies or whatever.

Speaker 5 (14:10):
Maybe, but we're still young and hungry.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
I mean I'm over there and every rep I'm getting
taken out, I'm over there looking at Gift like you
sure you don't want me in there? Or the second
they call them mom, but he called somebody else, I'm
like you sure, did you say nine one?

Speaker 5 (14:22):
Like bro? And that's all of our mentality.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
Everybody wants to get the snaps, everybody wants to help contribute,
and everybody's willing to do whatever it takes to help
this team succeed and that's gonna show up on Sundays,
that's gonna show up all throughout the season.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
There was a lot of mamba periods today. When did
you guys kind of get out of that on the first.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Day and that, Yeah, it's good to be able to
go ones on ones. You know, we've been doing a
lot of ones on twos, which is also great work.
I mean, obviously that's building depth, and we have a
lot of great pieces. And as you know, and as
we're shown last year, I mean, in any given moment
week one, we have what seven guys go down, and
everybody's gonna have to step up. So it's good to
be able to raise those guys up and also for

(15:00):
us to continue to be able to get good work.

Speaker 5 (15:03):
But then it's also.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
Good, you know, to be protected by the pads to
know that, you know, some of those hits and stuff.
It's not just gonna be like head on shoulders and
you can really protect each other, but you can really.

Speaker 5 (15:13):
Go all out.

Speaker 4 (15:13):
So now we're going ones on ones, We're getting a
true field of what the game you know, is gonna
feel like. And I'm excited because I mean I look
at our guys and a lot of our guys up front,
and I'm like, this guy is one of the best
in the entire league. You know, I think of every
time I line up on Kado. It's what a great
opportunity I have, Like, he's one of the best in
the league. That's gonna make me better. How can I

(15:33):
show my technique and how can I show what I
might show on other.

Speaker 5 (15:36):
People on him?

Speaker 4 (15:37):
And really when you go all throughout the line, I mean,
we have a lot of dogs in the offensive line,
so to be able to go ones on ones, to
be able to feel what it feels like, you know,
to have a back like Carr and that's jump cutting
in and out, and then obviously when staff gets back
for the for the back guys to be able to
see him dop the ball in all the different places,
be able to maneuver people different ways.

Speaker 5 (15:55):
It's it's getting really good work. Really one. It's an
important thing for you.

Speaker 6 (16:00):
You in the balance of last year was last year,
but still learning, taking some of that experience, but hitting
a reset for this year.

Speaker 4 (16:08):
Yeah, I mean, it's always about growing, right, and so
growing doesn't mean forgetting last year, but it means using
that as a foundation. And so we've done a really
great job of being able to have that foundation of
knowledge and also that foundation of confidence right the way
that we were flowing, you know, as the season progress
and into the to the louder parts of the season.

Speaker 5 (16:27):
That gives you a lot of earned confidence.

Speaker 4 (16:29):
Sean talks about it all the time, but earning the
confidence to be able to go out and just say
I'm gonna cut it loose and to be willing to
make a mistake or to be willing to fall because
you know, okay, at least I'm going for it. And
so that gives us a lot of confidence to build
off of. We have a lot of knowledge to build
off of, and ultimately that's going to show in us
playing a lot faster, us you know, getting after it
from the jump. And I'm excited to see kind of

(16:51):
how that shows up in year two of this young
defense and Shoela's second year and in our second year
kind of dealing with this group.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Yeah, I'm just excited. You've been here kind.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Of as the defensive line has evolved from a really
one really dominant player too dominant players across the board.
What's it been like and how would you describe how
that's evolved and where you guys are.

Speaker 4 (17:15):
Now, Yeah, I feel like there's a lot more of
an emphasis on personal responsibility. I mean, for me, I
had a ton of personal responsibility when I was lining
up with Ad because it was my job get him
off the slide, you know, go crease it, go pick
the center, get him.

Speaker 5 (17:30):
Off the slide.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
But now it's all four of us, all five of us,
however many out there on that front, and we each
have a specific job within a given framework of a play,
and there's specific ops that are written for all of us, right,
and the coaches do a great job of being able
to script it so that it captures the best things
that we do, and that shows up. So yeah, I

(17:53):
mean I think there's a lot of a lot more responsibility,
I would.

Speaker 5 (17:58):
Say, And you really have to rely on each other
a lot more.

Speaker 4 (18:01):
And you know, I give a ton of credit to
Gift the way that he's been able to unite the
D line room, to Gift and the coach of Joe
to be able to unite the.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
D line room in the ob room throughout last year.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
Now we're getting in meetings with each other, we're understanding
the language, we're saying Okay, this is when maybe Fist
has a hard down, and this is where Verse has
a hard down.

Speaker 5 (18:19):
So there's a general appreciation. And now we're.

Speaker 4 (18:21):
Continuing to even do that with the with the whole
front seven and with the linebackers as well, And I
mean that's just going to show up on Sunday. So
we have a lot of guys who can really go,
who can go and win, and at any given moment,
you got to be ready for any one of us
to strike, and.

Speaker 5 (18:35):
That's dangerous, awesome. Also, guys, appreciate you all.

Speaker 3 (18:38):
Thanks, Thanks,
