Speaker 1 (00:00):
He is a staple in Raleigh sports radio, has been
for years and you can now hear him weeknights on
WFNZ eight seven o'clock the Adam Gold Show, and Adam
Gold joins us here it is weekly spot Goldie.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
How you feeling this week? Man?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
I feel good. I feel great. I feel better than
they do in South Bend.

Speaker 4 (00:20):
They're not feeling too good based off the optics we're
seeing right now.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
What did you think about Pete Bavakua going after the ACC?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
What did you think? I think?

Speaker 3 (00:30):
I think, first of all, I mean, I think the
relationship between Notre Dame and the league is actually at
least as beneficial to the league as it is to
Notre Dame. The media is I think in general the
media is pretty dismissive of that. But whatever, we can
all have difference of opinion. I think Notre Dame is

(00:52):
valuable to the league, Oh definitely. I don't know that
they were necessarily mistreated, but I understand what the perception
is because it did come down to head to head
and the ACC and the ACC network, and you know,
the related media is going to say, well, why does
it head to head matter? And the head to head

(01:12):
did matter, right, So I got what Pete Povaca was
getting at. I think he was honestly upset because he
obviously doesn't listen to my show. Because I have been
warning him and everybody else the entire year, and every
year we've had these dumb Tuesday night bracket reveals. Don't
pay any attention to it because none of it matters.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
They're not beholding.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
They tear it up every week and start over, even
though it might not necessarily look like it, and what
happens one week doesn't mean anything for the next week. Frankly,
I think Notre Dame should have been in, and I
think you could. To me, the argument should have been
between Miami and Alabama, not necessarily although my I mean

(01:57):
all three of them. I think I would have left Alabama. Wow.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Great, I think we agree with you.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
I also wonder McK and I both did about Oklahoma also,
like they weren't scrutinized like the others. But I think
those teams are better than Oklahoma right now.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Oh, Oklahoma has no offense at all, right, but Alabama's
only got half an offense. So yeah, like the SEC,
I get it, that's the best league and it's not
even close. Right, they have more playoff worthy teams than
any other league, And honestly, I think Texas had a
great argument why they belonged. They played five There were

(02:34):
six SEC teams, seven SEC teams that finished in the
top fourteen of the College Football Playoff ranking. Texas played
five of them. They couldn't play Texas because they're Texas.
So they played five of the other six and went
three and two. Texas A and M played one of
them and went zero and one. I could argue at

(02:58):
Texas A and M.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
I might have said, yeah, no, you said to you.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
I would have argued that if they looked at the
schedules as opposed to the records, A and M might
not be in. I know they did beat Notre Dame,
but that's their only win, the only one win that
they have against even a competent team. Right, everything else
is at the bottom of the league. Texas might be in.

(03:25):
I mean Alabama might be and if we're doing it
that way, but Oklahoma also played a great schedule. I
think they played four teams, uh that were SEC teams
that were playoff caliber teams.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Yeah, it's you know, Goldy, it's the size of these conferences.
So now the schedules are unbalanced, and it's some teams
are going to have harder within their own conference. So
but again, these conferences asked for this. They grew and
grew to make money. You have asked for this, and
this is kind of a byproduct of it. What did
you did you think, Duke? I mean, I know Manny

(03:56):
Diaz was was stumping to be in the playoff over Jmu.
Is there any case there or is that your question?
Or is that just a hail Mary?

Speaker 2 (04:05):
What do you think?

Speaker 3 (04:06):
No, there's there's there's two discussions. There's who played a
better schedule, who was probably better? And I think the
answer to that is Duke. But at some point five
losses have the matter, right, Yeah, I can't wait, we
can't uh, we can't say Texas you lost three times,
therefore you're not in and think that Duke with five

(04:28):
losses is uh is going to get that spot. So
it's really what we've seen here is the exposure of
a lot of things that none of the power leagues
ever thought would happen. Right, Nobody thought that in this
age we would have a conference champion with five losses.

(04:51):
Just never occurred to anybody that that could happen.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Right, and and maybe and maybe.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
The acc tiebreakers were out of whack, But I think
what they did was they tried to determine who the
two best deserving, most deserving teams were in the league
to make the playoffs. And when you get down to it,
you know, there are different ways to decide who would
finish first, and nobody would really complain if well, first

(05:19):
of all, if Miami had either beatns SMU or Louisville.
Of course, Louisville was a much better team at the
time when Miami played them than after all their injuries.
But if Miami had somehow just had one less loss
or a couple of couple of other things had happened,
and Miami's strength of schedule were a little bit better,

(05:39):
and Miami was in the championship game, nobody'd be complaint.
We wouldn't even be having this discussion. But maybe we
should use the college football playoff rankings for the tiebreaker,
But then again, that's entirely subjective, and then you can
you can absolutely reverse engineer what you want, and I'm
not a fan.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Of that at all.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Do you have any problem with me buying the Duke
ACC Championship tea shirt for thirty four ninety nine plus ship.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
We can handle it.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
I'm surprised.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
That's all it is.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
No do it.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, it's on the way. Yeah, it's already done.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Yeah, sweatshirt.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
They did have some long sleeves. I kind of like,
you know, I may go back in to get another thing.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
You know what where I hate long sleeve T shirts?

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Do you hate them? I love them because I don't
like to show my arms too much, because it's it's
not you don't want to.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
Show.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
Well, I'm not as ten as I am in the
in the hotter months.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Right, it's a gun show here, it is.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
It's more like water pistols. You know, I'm just playing
me too, boone. I'm not just a sid Look at
my mother. There's not really a muscle area.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
Last week you couldn't figure out where your tristaps and
your bicaps.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Are this guy.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
That's when you know you don't have muscles when you
can't even figure out which muscle goes where and what
is why?

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Asked last week if the half try sad.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
We're talking at him going ninety nine fan rally. But
here in Charlotte, you got to know. You can listen
to them weeknights, most nights on WF and Z at
seven o'clock.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Goldie the Panthers.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
By virtue of the Saints beating the Bucks, the Panthers
are now tied for first. It's a four game sprint.
The Bucks and Panthers play home and home. Do you
think the Panthers can pull this off?

Speaker 3 (07:22):
What do you think I'm gonna surprise you? Yeah, and
I think they will.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
Doubting what what.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Self respecting division leader would ever lose to the Saints
at home?

Speaker 2 (07:38):
That's what I'm saying.

Speaker 3 (07:39):
Oh wait, it possibly women division with a home loss
to the Saints, right So I'm looking I'm looking right
at you, Tampa. I think I'm I think Tampa is
a mess right now. And we'll we'll find out. We'll
find out Sunday because I think Sunday will be an

(08:02):
indicator as to what we can expect the rest of
the way. I'd love to see them do exactly what
they did to the Rams in terms of the run
pass balance and how they go about throwing the ball
down the field.

Speaker 4 (08:14):
They kind of wonder how hurt Baker is because he's
never going to let them know how hurt he is.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Oh, he's hurt.

Speaker 4 (08:19):
But I wonder if the downfall is that he's playing
through stuff. End of the year, we're going to find
out he's got like eight injuries going on.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Right now, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah, I think the I think the spring dayc joints
of fact. I know it's not throwing shoulder, but he
you just watch it. That doesn't look you know that,
that does not look anywhere near his best right now.
So I think that's a part of it. I do
think that's definitely a part of it. Goldie, what do
you think about this Duke basketball team? Do you think
I've heard two I've heard two statements being made about

(08:50):
them that are big compliments as they continue to win
tough game after tough game. One is they're the best
team in the country. I've heard some people say. Another
one is they might be better than last year's team.
Do you would you agree with either one of those
statements or not yet?

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Kon Ker Nipple and Cooper Flag were on last year's team, right, yes,
Scion James was on last year's Last year's team in
terms of talent, was significantly better.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
And I like this team.

Speaker 3 (09:22):
Last year's team was significantly better in terms of talent
than this year's team Tyree's Proctor. I mean, my gosh, look,
it just proves how hard it is to win a title.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
It really does.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
And everybody's got great players, and then it just comes
down to how you execute and how you play. I
think that what is great about this team is Cameron Boozer.
While he's not quite as good as Cooper Flag, he
might be better as a college player than Cooper Flag

(09:52):
was as a college player. And we know how great
Cooper Flagg was as a college player. The one thing
he is, he's not a high level athlete. He's a
great basketball player. He makes a lot of difficult shots
around the rim. Sometimes those aren't gonna go, but he's
a great three point shooter. He's super smart. But I

(10:14):
think this Duke team can be slowed down offensively. They
need some of their Isaiah Evans needs to be a
little bit more consistent. I mean, they're gonna be nice
where he's gonna be five out of seven and then
he's gonna be one out of eight. I love to
see a balance there. I don't think they have great
point guard play. But with that said, and I think

(10:37):
it's because the Boozer. They just know how to win,
and maybe they'll be a lot like some of those
teams that they have run up against later, you know,
late in NCAA tournaments. I do think they have a
small quickness problem, but because I thought when they played Kansas,

(10:57):
they had a hard time staying in front of Kansas,
and I don't think Kansas is the quickest team in
the country. But I love this duke team. I realized
they just pointed out all their faults. They got five
incredible wins. We're not even talking about the exhibition win
over Tennis Dad. Where they can where they roll, them.

Speaker 4 (11:16):
Use the word team a lot, and that's how I identify it.
That they might not have as much talent as some
previous team, but I feel like I feel like the
role identification is a lot better than some teams where
they're they it's some Yeah, there are guys that can
have big nights, but they're all surrounding the main star
in Boozer, and I think everyone kind of fits into
what their role is.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
And I kind of like that about this group right now.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
I love I love the makeup. I don't think they'll
have uh, you know, melt a meltdown like they did
against Houston against anybody. I don't think that'll happen to
this Duke team, and I think they've been doing it
the other way. Like I thought, Michigan State was better
than them for most of that game, and at the end,

(11:58):
Duke played better. They they they kept the game manageable
while Michigan State was out playing them, and then they
just put you know, they got a little bit of
rhythm offensively. Boozer was amazing in the second half. They
just put their foot on the accelerator and went.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
To me.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
That's the one of the best qualities about this team
is that even when they don't look like they're playing well,
they seem to be playing well.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Yeah, no doubt they have a knack for five. Even
though there's they've got such some young pieces, they have
a knack for finishing these games, man like.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
That's the one thing.

Speaker 1 (12:31):
Last year's team against Kansas and Kentucky early in the season,
remember they kind of didn't know.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
How to close, right.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
They had some weird possessions where Cooper Flagg tried to
iso they had to learn how to close. This team
is less individually talented, but they're they're closing right now
and it's it's impressive.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
I can't wait.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
I can't wait see Carolina when tremble comes back NC State.
Maybe it'll wake up at some point. But Wake had
a big win the other day. That's gonna be a
fun basketball season. Man. It is all right, Goldie, you're
the man and this is amazing. All the Panther fans
on the text line love you today. Nobody's mad at
you today.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
Baby. They don't know what to think.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
There are some crap the ark that's a trap. They figure, Yeah,
I think there's a heel turn next week or something. Well,
if they lose, the Saints go beat take care of business.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
That's right. It is a big game, though.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
I know the Bucks games are the ones that you
feel like, you know, have the most say. But the
Panthers can show up bone this week, and Goldie, they
can show up this week and take care of business
and be like, Okay, maybe they're ready now to not
trip up, to not regress after prosperity and stuff like that.

Speaker 3 (13:39):
I can't I can't stress enough how impressive the way
they beat the Rams once so to me, that was
that that said a lot by the way Mike Jackson,
who I didn't think was good enough to be a
number two corner. I was clearly wrong about that. He
is now my favorite panther.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
About that? How about that? Anybody?

Speaker 1 (13:58):
But when you buy Goldie a Christmas gift, get him
Mike jack Jo, go ahead and tell where your favorite
Kane player is now, not shirt my favorite Kane player.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
I'm an a ho man. Are you definitely an a
ho man? Yes? Clearly? I mean that isn't that the
right call? Goldie?

Speaker 3 (14:13):
Ah, you can't go wrong with Jarvis if you like funny.
Uh yeah, I'd go uh for the total package, I'd
go Jarvis, but I was Ah, I was an original.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
You see what I'm in the jarvy party myself. You
are both tried to do Goldie.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
He thought that he would catch Mac not hockey savvy
enough to even name.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
He was going to name a player like Wayne Grey.
Try to name the country.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Wayne Presky is.

Speaker 1 (14:37):
Still trying to figure out what how you say Macedonia?

Speaker 4 (14:39):
He named small villages that don't play soccer. Unbelievable. Unbelievable,
our Goldie. Uh uh you rock, Goldie.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
We appreciate. We'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 3 (14:49):
