Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, man, let's do this. Let's talk about a
game coming up on Sunday. Let's reflect back on the
one last Sunday, you know, the shutout win over the
hated Falcons, and let's do it with a man who
is the perfect guy bone I said this week to you,
I said, you know who we need to get on
now that this city is buzzing about the Panthers after
that shutout win, we got to talk to Eugene Robinson,
(00:23):
who is just I mean in he is just in
his zone when you've got Panthers optimism just like we are.
And Eugene Robinson a long time NFL dB longtime remember
the Panther Radio network. I was listening to him on
Panther Talk with Coach Canalis this week. Eugene, what's going
on man? How you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Man? I am doing wonderful man, big win last week,
there you go.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
It was, man, what did you think? And that's why
you're here?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Man.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
We love your enthusiasm. So we finally got something positive
talk about this season. What did you notice in that
shutout win defensively that that were the keys in your mind?
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Well? I think what kind of goes like unset a
little bit is that they were able to hold that
b shown Robinson to like maybe in the first court,
first half, they held him in check and I was like,
I thought that he would go off because I think
he's one of the best running backs in the in
the league. But I thought he would go off, and
we were able to hold him and check in the
(01:25):
first three quarters, and I was like, that was I
thought one of the difference. And then don't forget the
interceptions with you got way Smith and and Jack got
an interception that went a long way. And that also
that funk force fumble, Uh, the mighty Richards and getting
that fought so much end. I thought defense played extremely well.
They was able to put pressure on the quarterback. They
was able to stop the run. And I thought that
(01:45):
the thing that we weren't able to do the last
couple of games was stopped to run, and we were
able to do that and that was the key to
the test.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Eugene, how impressive have you been with Mary got safety
and the chess piece that they can use him as.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Yeah. I think what I like about him too is
that I like the communication skills. First of all, he's
just tough. He's a tough dude, all right, but he's
a leader and I like the communication that goes around.
And also he also takes responsibility. There was a play
in I believe it was the Cardinals game where they
had that test down where he would actually was I
think wants to cover that the tight end out in
the flat uh end up scoring a test down and
(02:21):
he takes responsibility. So I like that because I think
that you're not gonna be perfect, but wait, but you
got to be truthful and you got to be honest.
And so I like his honesty. I like his superniss
and I like his toughness, and I think he's a
great choice coming from the Raiders that we picked up
and and in free agency that really is boastering our
uh I just as the backfield, and don't forget J. C.
(02:43):
Horn is a beast man. He's been playing well, dude,
he's been playing well, no doubt about it. He's I mean,
he's every bit of that guy. That man. He's a
shutdown corner. He really is a shutdown corner. He's all over,
he's like glueing. So with that, here here's here's my take.
But I think that's one thing that we have to
(03:04):
go forward moving defensively. I think the front seven and
ability for our linebackers to make those those tackles. Uh.
We we didn't see it against the Cardinals. We had
some mistackles, a number of mistackles. But against the fulcons uh,
they were able to make those tackles. And so I
think moving forward, as as we moved forward, going with
(03:24):
the tackling by the linebackers, I think that really shows
up our defense, no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
The one thing that Horn hasn't done in his first
few years, and he doesn't have a ton of interceptions
are Eugene, but what the wade?
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Mi?
Speaker 3 (03:36):
Jack is playing? Smith Wade? What are there? They might
throw towards Horn a little more than they used? Are
you expected more? I n t s now from them
from Horn?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
You know, I think it's gonna be the same. It's
gonna be the same thing. I mean, everybody knows that
jac Horn is that guy, and I know that, Uh,
offensive coordinators don't want to stay stay away from over
and so I think you know Jack and also Smith Way,
they're gonna get a lot of balls thrown at their
thrown out their way because of who who who is
(04:06):
on the other side of the field. Don't forget I
mean Dicky Horns. He's very very good. I mean, he
reminds me a little bit of a Nias Williams. He
got some uh uh uh, you know, just that just
that that toughness and that grit. And also he's acceptibly
fast too, so he has that steve via to stick
with the receiver. So I like him, but he's gonna
(04:28):
he's gonna be targeted, not targeted, he's gonna be God's
gonna throw away from him.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
We're talking to Eugene Robinson about the Carolina Panthers defensive
performance shut out win over the Falcons. What a beautiful,
beautiful day that was for Panther fans. We'll talk a
little bit to me about what you noticed, because you're
gonna this just in. You're gonna notice things that we
as fans do not notice with all your football experience
on that side of the ball. What did you see
(04:54):
from a Varo in that game? Schematically that what that
that led to the SI?
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, I believe you. You jumped into that eight man
front to think about this. You got b John Robinson
and he's that he's that guy, right, and so you
got to stop them at all costs, and so you
got to have all hands on deck, and so you
want to make sure that you keep them correlled and
bunched up so that he can't get out, can't hit
those scenes. And so typically that's eight man front. And
so we run that three four system, sometimes the four
(05:24):
to two system when we get into the second and
third down. When we run that three fourth system, you
got your guys, your ed guys. They got to be intact,
they got to be in tecked. And I thought what
we were able to do was we were able to
keep everything bunch stuff. Nobody's getting really outside of you. Uh.
Against the Cardinals, Uh, the edges were the compromise. Guys
(05:48):
got outside on the edges the first game, they got
outside the edges. This last game, we kept it all
bunched up. And that was the difference because now if
you keep it bunched up, you give you an inside
linebackers a bit a chance to go ahead and you
uh to make that tackle. So I thought that was
well done, well done by coach de Zero, no doubt
about it. Eugene.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
What do you think of t mac at why out
so far?
Speaker 2 (06:10):
I love him he I remember the first time. I
was like, oh man, I was looking for one of those,
you know, one of those edge rushes in the in
the draft, I was looking for one of jaylen Walker
comes to mind. I was like, man, we gotta get
a defensive guy. We need a linebacker we won't want
to We need a Louke Peakley type guy. We need
that Thomas Davis dude. And when we picked up t Mac,
(06:32):
I was like, okay, well, I don't know too much
about him. And then I saw he touched the rock.
I'm like, hold up, wait a minute, now, wait a minute.
This dude is that guy. He reminds me of move
sim Muhammed, but a lenkier body, but just that attitude
that he thinks that nobody can beat him. And then
the catches that he hasn't made. Let me say that
(06:52):
he hasn't made. He's been able to get his hands
on a couple of footballs that the defensive back had
to strip it out of his hand, all because of
good defensive back play. And I'm sitting here like this,
this dude is making it look really, really easy. He's
catching the ones that come to him, but the ones
that are really difficult with the guy's climbing all of you.
He's about to pull those into him, like dude and
(07:13):
his and his route running to be that tall. He
plays like a big receiver. He plays like a big receiver.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
No doubt that ball. That ball Bryce threw up in
the air and said, I'm just gonna throw this like
three feet above the dB because I know my guy
can get it. I know you can and my guy can. Man,
that was beautiful. What do you think about Bryce? Speaking
of Bryce Eugene, I do think it's been a little
uneven start to the season, but I love the way
(07:40):
he played. He rallied us in the second half even
in Arizona, even though it fell short. And then last
week it was one of those where, man, you don't
have to try to do you know, they didn't have
to try to do too much crazy with the way
the defense is playing. What do you think of the
way Bryce's season has started?
Speaker 2 (07:54):
Well, I think, first of all, like when you know,
we looked at the first couple of games, and you know,
everybody's on Bryce a little bit, I'm like, hey, this
all stops. Stuff starts up front. It's the offensive line.
Your office line has to be intact, and it has
to it has to be able to uh protect the quarterback,
because if they can't protect the quarterback, I don't care
who you have back there, he's gonna get his head busted.
(08:15):
And so I thought that a function Bryce's success is
really predicated on the office of line. And I think
our officeive line was in plucks and we had a
couple of guys that got hurt, I think Corbett and Hunt, uh,
and we had to bring in a couple of guys
to ballast and and ks and so from that standpoint,
you got to have it secure. Now moving on that
(08:36):
last game and the last uh, you know, there's nothing
what is the last six quarters? Uh that Cardinal game
when we come back, officeive line was intact. And now
you can see Bryce go ahead and eat. Bryce is
really accomplished. You know, you would think that guy would
have a lot of bat at balls down because he's
a small guy. He finds those windows, and he finds
those windows and he's able to go ahead and make
(08:56):
those throws. I'm gonna do. This guy is every bit.
And I'm telling you right now, the fact that he's
hooking up with t Max like he did hooked up
with Adam Feeling. I think there's a special relationship that's
going on there that they're going to continue to exploit
because t Max is every bit of what you need
and a top receiver, A top was no doubt about that.
(09:17):
So and don't forget he got Standers, He's got Tremaine.
He's spreading the ball around. So I like where we
are right now. I like what Brights is at and
I think that moving forward. You know, I know it's
only a couple of games, and I know that the
fact that we beat the Falcons thirty to nothing that
people may be man just waiting to see, I think
they got something going.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
Dude, Eugene. We marvel at the clips that come out
of watching Derek Brown just ragged all offensive lineman at
the line of scrimmage. Now, from your perspective as a dB,
when you would watch the greats that you played with,
whether it's Cortes, Kennedy and Seattle, Reggie White and Green Bay,
did you have moments back there where you would watch
those guys like that just ragged all someone You just
(09:59):
almost laugh at yourself.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Absolutely, And that's what I liked about Due Brown. I
kept saying, I said, his job is the hardest job
because you got to take up two guys. You got
to be able to go ahead and bust two guys
up to keep them off the linebackers. He's able to
do that. He's able to do that, and then he's able,
like you said, to rag down people. My goodness, dude,
he reminds me of one staff. He reminds me of
(10:22):
Courches Kennedy, Reggie White Airdonald. He reminds me of one
of the top guys. And that's why that's why who
he is who he is. He's just got it. He
had the body size, he got the mentality, and he
had to sobring judgment too. After that game, when everybody
was all high talking about yeah, yeah, we you know,
we blew these guys out. Yeah we're back the whole thing,
(10:42):
he said, hey, let's put another win together. Let's let's
put another win together. And I thought that was sobering
judgment on why you're, you know, really flying high. And
I think it's the right justine too, because you got
to put another game together against the Patriots, Let's go
ahead and do that. And that's what he was and
I like his words.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Oh You're right, he was walking off. They caught him
walking off the field and he was not celebrating. You know,
you're smiling, but he said, that's just one. We got
more to get. I love it. You mentioned the Patriots.
What are your thoughts on this one? I mean, obviously
it's a winnable game, but you know there's also that
worry of some Panther fans got if they beat themselves
like they did early in the Sea, you know, the
(11:23):
first game and half. You know they could lose this game.
What do you think of this matchup with New England?
Speaker 2 (11:29):
So one thing I think the Patriots when it comes
to passing and when it comes to their defensive, they're
given up too on the statistic yards passes. They're twenty
ninth in the league. That really lends itself to Bryce
and it lends itself to t Max Sanders' commin It
(11:51):
lends himself to go ahead and really exploit that secondary
and export that linebackers. Whether it is Zona Mat I'm
gonna go ahead and test that defense, because when you
give up two hundred and fifty six, that means you
got some explosive plays. You've got some explosive plays. That's
gonna be able to happen. And we're only passed like
one hundred and eighty sixty yards. I expect that that's
going to increase. I expect that Coach Canalis is going
(12:13):
to have more passes in this game as opposed to
more runs or maybe maybe a better blend and maybe
fifty five forty five or maybe fifty fifty. I would
try to take advantage of these guys are passing. Don't
forget on the other side, got Drake may I say,
blitz him. Put put people in the face. Put people
(12:34):
in the face. Dude, get in his face. And so
moving forward with coach Gerald, I'm like, hey, I'm gonna
put as much pressure on this young quarterbacks as possible
and see if I can get make it, make some
errant throws, because all I need is a couple of
explosive plays. All I need is a couple of things
to get into your head. And so I'm looking forward
to that to happen.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
I like it. I like it. By the way, I
want you to let everybody know how versatile of a
broadcaster Eugenie has been over the years in the Queen
City and still is. We talked about all those years
on the Panther Radio network. He's with the boys on
Panther Talk every Monday, but mornings at eleven am. On weekdays,
he's on Charlotte Charlotte Today on w c n C Bone.
(13:15):
He can end up in a kitchen with a chef,
can you know what I mean? He can end up.
He can end up telling get telling people to back
the school, stuff to buy. Eugene, you are the ultimate
versatile player in the media game.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Brother.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Hey, we appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Man.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Be good.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Hey, I appreciate you. Guys. Thank you at all.
