Speaker 1 (00:00):
We got a lot of stuff talk about with Zach
Gelb Infinity Sports Radio, who joins us here on the
Mac and Bone Show.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Gelby, how you feeling this week? Man?
Speaker 3 (00:08):
I'm doing great.
Speaker 4 (00:09):
Where are my cookies? Though? Like, can you send them
over this way?
Speaker 2 (00:12):
I feel like that's the least we could do.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
We can at least pay Gelvin cookies, you know this
holiday season.
Speaker 5 (00:18):
I wouldn't mind getting paid just straight up cookies. Actually,
I think.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
First thirty six cookies get sent to me FedEx overnight.
I have them by the game tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
Should be good. Right.
Speaker 5 (00:29):
My first six years in radio, they only paid me
in oreos.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
So it's it's all good. You can relate, you can,
you can definitely relate.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
They moved to chip the hoys for you now, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, it's true.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Yeah, Gelby, I'm gonna we gotta start with the Panthers
upset win over the Rams. I'm certainly not going to
like say, I bet you didn't believe in us, gel
because I can't imagine anybody did.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
We.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Bone and I both had the Panthers losing by double digits.
But they continue to prove that they're all over the place.
But they're also capable of big time wins. What did
you think of them pulling that off?
Speaker 3 (01:05):
I think before this game up against the Rams, the
most impressive win of the season, people would probably say
was going to Green Bay and beating the Packers. I
think you could make the argument the first time up
against the Falcons just how decisive it was at being
thirty to nothing. But this is by far and away
the most impressive one because you could have argued last
week heading into it that the Rams are the best
(01:25):
team in the NFL and what I love the most.
Obviously there was turner turnovers by the Rams, but Bryce
Young to Ted McMillan late in that game. That is
what a team that is moving in the right direction
needs to see from their younger players. You have a
quarterback who's been through a lot, had his good moments,
had his bad moments. Ted, they made the big draft
(01:46):
pick this year, them coming through late.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
It's not just.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
That they won, it's also how they won. I was
thoroughly impressed with the Carolina Pants, so I said this
about a month ago with you guys. It's like every
game now when you tune in, and nothing would deprive me.
It's what I see from this team, and you know,
who knows, maybe it ends at the end of the
season where they end up winning the NFC South.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
How much how much of a chance do you give
them to win the South because the Bucks schedule definitely
is in their favor, the Bucks favor.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Yeah, I would say it's probably fifty five sixty percent
still okay, in favor of Tampa.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
But that's a pretty tamp good percent.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Like if I told you at any point this season
the Caroland of Panthers that have a forty percent chance
in my estimation, to win the NFC South, it's not greater.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
You would take that in a second?
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Hell yeah, no doubt. And actually, Gilby, that.
Speaker 5 (02:37):
Not only the first, the first after the first two
games of the season.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
If you said that we want to sign up for that.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
The way things started this year were going to Jacksonville
the fload management days.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Honestly, I thought I was gonna say, guys, that's too
many syllables in this segment. Can't do it with that
would start the first Hey, we were worried we'd lose you.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
The first two weeks in the season, bone I would
have taken a four percent chance to win the division
to those two.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Gay, there's no doubt about it. But it's interesting.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
I thought I was just going to get larryningitis for.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Friday.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
Oh man, So Gail, it's interesting though the number you
give there. Because we talked about this this week, because
Bone and Fitty have gone on record now after the
win and they've said they think they're going to the playoffs.
I'm still kind of feeling like, because I think they're
gonna have to sweep Tampa, because I think Tampa is
likely to beat New Orleans and able to beat the Falcons.
(03:28):
And if they do, then if they just split with us,
they have the division, they will have the division record tiebreaker.
But but I thought the number Bone and I gave
out is around thirty five or forty percent. You know,
the math geeks still are giving the Panthers like an
eighteen to twenty one percent chance.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Only Oh that's why I.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Never did really well in maths when I was in college.
Or the Panthers a steps in six. Uh, they lost
to the States the.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
First time around. Let's say, coming off the by they're
going to beat the same that gets them to eight.
I would then say they probably split with Tampa, so
that's gonna put them at nine, beat and see at
least the game is in Carolina. I would probably say
that it's a loss of Seattle, so that would put.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
Them at nine and eight on the season.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
The Bucks are seven and five, so you're gonna.
Speaker 4 (04:14):
Split against the Panthers.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
That get them to eight.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
They probably beat the Saints nine. Yeah, and then.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
You get Miami in there.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
It's gonna be close.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
Like, hey, would it shock you? I'm not saying expected,
but with this Panthers seamen, they just beat the Rams.
Are they capable of beating the Buccaneers twice?
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (04:33):
I don't think it's crazy. They could lose to the
Saints and beat the Bucks. Wi us they could, That's yeah,
you said it.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Man.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Wait, like every week, any outcome with this team is
on the damn table. And that's gonna be the key
Gelby is can they find some consistency in the final
four weeks win three of them, sweep the Bucks and
beat the Saints. If they can find some consistency, they're
getting there. It's just I don't know, are we ready
for consistency? Gal or is it another offseason? And then
(05:02):
this team will have a better roster and then maybe
they're ready to be consistent. I don't know, but it's
but it's fun though, you know.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Yeah that that I can't tell you, Like this week,
we could barely even tell you whats gonna look like
the final four weeks of the season. So in terms
of what they're gonna do in the off season, I
don't know. But Bryce is playing better, he's managing the game.
That has been really damn good. Whoever they kind of
plugged and played this year at running back has been working.
The defense is the making strides. You know, this team's
(05:29):
so far away, and maybe they are ahead of the curve,
but even if they missed the postseason and they're nine
and eight, this is gonna be the most optimistic you've
been about a Panthers team in a long time going
into what would be an off season.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
And next season.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
Tonylby Dan Graziano of ESPN had a blurb this week
about the Panthers likely to pick up the fiftier option
for Bryce Young and then they'll figure out down the
line eventually about a bigger.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Contract and they're gonna let it play out.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Does that make sense to you to pick up the
fifth year option, not do the full deal now and
then because you have time waited out and see if
Bryce has more consistency down the line.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Absolutely, like, do not give this guy forty five fifty
million dollars a year right now. Quite frankly, he doesn't
deserve it. And we've seen guys where it was Trevor Lawrence,
you know, to.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
A Ta Biloa.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
I remember having these conversations, and when they gave them
the contracts, I said, way too early.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
You could wait.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
You know, Morgant and Company here and you know the owner.
They got to make sure to be patient here. You know,
Bryce Young has been fine, he's been okay. You know,
I'm not rushing and giving him this ridiculous contract now.
Next year if he balls out, different stories, but for now,
(06:53):
just stay the course. It looks like he's gonna be
here for five years. He's right now in year three,
and don't do something where you overpay him. And then
two years from now we're sitting there saying, oh my god,
there's three more years of Brice Young. They got to
get rid of him and need all that money.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Yeah, yeah, Now I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
I like Bryce and I love two of those last
three games, but it's like, let's not rush it. Let's
see more, right, let's get let's get more of a
sample size. Zach Gelby's with US Infinity Sports Radio as
he is every Friday, Gelby, I'm gonna here. I'm gonna
give you this gift this holiday season. All right. I
am going to allow you to completely tee off on
(07:31):
or just completely mock and laugh at my Penn State
Nitney Lyons Glby. I am in pain. This coaching search
is an embarrassment. Man, Oh my god, what do you
think of this mess?
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Well, number one, I don't like to beat up on
the porch.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
I won't mock you guys.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
The number two, like me, hating Penn State, kind of
goes out the window since James Franklin is no longer there.
Speaker 4 (07:53):
Oh okay, but there's no doubt about it. This is sloppy.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
I still think it was the right decision to move
off to James Franklin. But they got to hire a coach,
you know. Kalini Tataki kind of came out of nowhere
and then Crumble Cookie and all that stuff kept him
at BYU and the Mormons. Now I guess it's gonna
be Matt Campbell. My only concern about Matt Campbell, who's
a really damn good football coach, and I'm curious to
(08:17):
see what he could do if he is the Penn
State guy with bigger resources.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
A few years ago, Iowa State.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Was supposed to win the Big Twelve and they came
up significantly short, and he was like, hey, I never
said my expectation was to win the Big Twelve. So
like you go to Penn State where they just fired
the coach because he wasn't gonna win a national championship,
you have to embrace those big expectations. So I think
it would be a good hire, solid higher But here's
(08:43):
what I know about pack Kraft because I covered him
for two coaching.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Searches when he was at Temple.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Usually he moves in silence like he's very close to
the best, and that's how this search was trending. And
then once THEA take stuff got out and he didn't
land him in, I think all bets are off.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Now.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
Could it be Terry Smith, Could it be Brian dave Ball,
Could it be Matt Campbell. I don't know, but like,
let's get the white smoke pumping and find out who's
gonna be the.
Speaker 5 (09:07):
Next case you worried that Casey Keeler from Temple maybe
next on the list.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Uh, that's a good one, I'm gonna assume though. But man,
that guy, he's done a wonderful job getting five wins
for the Owls this year.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Uh he cleared or over under like uh, you know,
a few weeks into the season.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
But I think we're projecting in like two wins this year.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
So I like, Casey, that was a good.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
Year for your Temple Owls. Before we let you go.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
The Bavy game though we blew the v game should
have won.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
That was a blown game, big time.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
I'm sure you watched it a lot.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
I know how it ended, Glby, I know how I
know how I get touchdown by Navy.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
May have had a little bit of a partway on that.
Oh there you go.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
So bow was locked in, his money was on the line,
all right. So Gelby, let's last thing, how do you
what do you make of the whole Alabama jump ahead
of Notre Dame and and Miami still being behind Notre
Dame BYU is kind of the flying the ointment there.
If they win, you know it's going to bounce maybe
(10:09):
Notre Dame. How do you feel about that? Log jam
right there from kind of Alabama through Miami.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
What do you make of this?
Speaker 3 (10:17):
So Alabama should have always been in front of Notre Dame.
I thought the committee jumped them way to you know,
had them drop way too far. So I'm glad that
they made that adjustment. But when I was hearing Hunter
your check speak, the debate really all this time from
US has been Notre Dame in Miami, but in the
committee room it's been Alabama and Notre Dame.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
So I don't even think.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
They really debated truthfully Notre Dame and Miami. So Alabama
I think is in regardless even if they lose the
SEC Championship game. They just can't get blown out. But
Kylen de Bore the last two years is defeated Georgia twice,
so I think that game is going to be close,
and I kind of think Alabama does win it. But
I think Alabama's in either way now if BHYU beat
Texas Tech, Texas Tech and BYU are both in. If
(10:59):
BYU lose, I think they're out, and then it comes
down to Miami and Notre Dame, who are both idle.
It's crazy to me because it makes no sense of
what I'm about to say. When the first rankings came out,
Notre Dame was ten, Miami was eighteen, and now it's
been pushed up to where Notre Dame's ten in Miami
is twelve. I think if they had the debate, and
(11:19):
maybe I'll be dead wrong on this, because right two
losses are fewer, Notre Dame is probably guaranteed the spot
in the playoff runs when this whole thing was designed.
But when they compare the resumes of Miami Notre Dame,
you can sit there and tell me, oh, yeah, Miami
lost SMU in overtime.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
They lost to Louisville.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
The metrics are so similar, so it doesn't head to
head have to come into play. And I know it's
back in August and Jeremiah loves got the football more
and Marcus Freeman and the offense that hands off the
ball more. But I think Miami's gonna get it over
Notre Dame. It's it comes down to it. And I
wouldn't have said that four weeks two. I would have
sten that three weeks too. I want to send that
two weeks ago. But that's where I sit after hearing
Hunter Yurchik speak over the gem.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
I'm starting to think it might be possible if that
BYU loses and they end up back to back.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
I wonder if they would flip the I really.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
Think they would.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
I really do interesting, especially if Duke were to win
and they're like, do we completely take one of these
powerful conferences and tell they ain't got nobody there.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
That's the other thing too, It's gonna be fast wins.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
If Duke wins, you need Troy to beat James Madison
for Duke to get in. But if Duke wins and
James Madison win their conference championship and then whoever wins
too latee in North Texas, think about it, we'll have
two group of five teams in the college football playoffs.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
If you would have told me that before.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
The first season, I would have ever believed insane. And
you have the a SEC to blame or thank I
review reviewing. All right, Gelby, you rock?
Speaker 3 (12:38):
You you know what this? The a SEC is up
for the taken. Maybe we cant a old chapel bill
run next year.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
There you go, Fitty, there you go, baby.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Now send Gelbi's cookies for that comment. Send him as cookies.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
All right, gel you rock. We'll talk to you next week. Man.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Wow, this is a great call.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
I didn't get hung up on. Thank you guys. That's
a good one.
