Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ira Kauffman, and he is back.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
What is? Ira?
Speaker 1 (00:02):
We appreciate you doing the double with us? Man? How
you doing doing good?
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Just got out of my hot tub. It's forty seven
degrees up down here, gentlemen.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
That is something for y'all. Man, look at you.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
We can we can't handle that. We can't handle it.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
You are living large, though? What's so? Let me ask
you this, like? What is?
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Because we keep wondering, like how much fight the Bucks
have left? I wonder if some guys over there just
want to head to Cancun and call it a year.
I mean, do you feel like this team is at
that point? Or do you feel like the old four
time division champs could still rise up on Saturday?
Speaker 2 (00:43):
You know, I think the Bucks that we've come to
love here in the Bay Area, I think that ship
has sailed. I was there earlier in the week at
the headquarters. I talked to Mayfield, talk to Bowls, a
couple of players. Energy, guys, there's no juice. It just isn't.
(01:03):
Watching the Daltins game last week, Miami looked like the
team that was in a playoff hunt. The Bucks looked
like a team that was playing for nothing. The lack
of energy, physicality. It's really stunning. And this goes back
to the bye week. I don't know what the heck
happened that week. They were six and two, the Panthers
were going nowhere. Atlanta was you know, awful. And since
(01:27):
then the Bucks have on one game, you know, and
they've lost seven and the street continues. It's the lack
of energy, the lack of purpose. And look, you guys
saw bowls of speech after the Atlanta Milton them and
that's that's very out of character for bowls and you
would think they would respond to that, but it just
(01:49):
hasn't happened. So if you're a Panther fan right now,
I think you're feeling very good about the playoff chances.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I right, how much? How much is chemistry and issue?
Right now?
Speaker 4 (01:59):
We hear the but you're down there every day. We
see Worth's arguing with Bucky Irvan the other day. How
much internally is going wrong right now for the Bucks?
Speaker 2 (02:07):
From your knowledge, I think it's significant. I do. And
here's the irony. When they were winning, and this happens
all the time. You know, players and coaches, they couldn't
stop talking about the chemistry, the camaraderie in this locker room,
and now they need a leader to, you know, kind
(02:28):
of take charge. Maybe throw a window, throw a chair
across the room, something like that. You don't see it,
You just don't see it. They need a couple of
big hits on Saturday. By the way, the forecast is
it might rain, very well, might rain, and we don't
get any rain around here, but Saturday four o'clock, five,
(02:49):
six o'clock could be raining. That might slow down that
high powered Carolina offense.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
Gentlemen, might watch yourself. Watch yourself there. But yes, we did.
Doesn't want mother Nature doesn't want this iron.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
We passed for a robust fifty four yards, So I
guess I have to take that shot.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
I guess I have to. Ira Kaufman.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
If you want to read up on the enemy this week,
Joe bucksfan uh dot com, check out kind of what
they're saying. We got to talk about Baker Man because
this is a guy and we've had a couple of
fans say it. We played a clip of Chris Sims
saying it. Chris sim says, I just trust Baker and
Mike Evans, you know, more than these young panthers and stuff.
But Baker has not been you know, the Baker that's
(03:33):
you guys have come to know down there. Really in
these last eight games, I mean, the numbers are pretty ugly,
the performances are rough. Even last week, when he throws
for three hundred plus yards, he has the two turnovers.
Do you think Baker, does Baker have kind of one
moment of Gunslinger rallying in him or or I mean
we found out this week he's got two other injuries
(03:53):
in addition to that left shoulder.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
Man, he just is he just done.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Well. A lot of people think he's playing hurt, which
is what he does. You know, he did it in
Cleveland and it ended up hurting his career. But when
Teddy Bridgewater and you guys know Bridgewater, he's your other option.
You know they're not taking Mayfield out no matter what.
So you know, his struggles have paralleled the team struggles
because he hasn't He hasn't really played well since the
(04:23):
bye week. I mean at the long period of time.
Now he's throwing key fourth quarter interceptions. First nine games,
he threw two interceptions. Now he's thrown about you know,
nine or ten on the season. He's trying to do
too much. He doesn't you know, he doesn't hold up
as he doesn't defend the defense. He doesn't have any
(04:45):
hopes about the defense, no confidence. So I think he's
trying to do too much and he's throwing critical picks,
which is driving Bowls crazy. But the Bucks don't really
have an option, and I think he's playing a little
bit hurt at this time. You're right, the right shoulder
has never been an issue this year and now it is. Look,
you're gonna see him Saturday. He's not going anywhere. But
(05:07):
I think he's been hit so much this year with
this you know, overburdened offensive line. They're missing two guards.
Sometimes he feels the pass rush one it's not even there.
So Derek Brown is salivating at the prospects of going
up against these backup tackles. And by the way, I'm
making my I picked the old Pro team, one of
(05:28):
fifty voters, and I'm starting to walk on my ballot.
They want it next week as soon as the last
game is over. I'm looking at Derek Brown. You know,
I just like that guy. I really like him. I
think he's a big leader for them. They really missed
him last year. I think he played one game, and
you know, people talk about the comeback player of the year,
they're talking about Dak Prescott McCaffrey. I understand that you
(05:51):
could make a case for Derek Brown. I mean you
really could. You know, a guy who played every game
this year and he's sort of the anchor. And let's
face you know, the Panthers have kind of relied on
their defense this year because the offense has been very spotty.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
To go from the worst defense ever without them to
having a chance to at least win the division with them,
that says a lot about so many things involving Derek Brown.
And I are the fact that I know that the
things don't ultimately matter in the scheme of everything, but
the fact that he was not a pro bowler stunned
us here in Carolina.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
I understand they go by, you know, sacks, which to me,
it's not the most important thing for an interior defensive lineman. Anyway.
I just think, you know, you gotta count everything when
you're talking about Derek Brown. I think he lifts the play,
like you said, of everybody around him. By the way,
there's a lot of apprehension here because we don't know
(06:47):
about the future of Levani David and Mike Evans. They
could walk off the field for the final time in
the NFL, final time in a Buck uniform. Hard to
imagine either of those two guys playing for an anybody else.
I think they want to end their career like Derek
Brooks are on the Bober. You know, the guy's a buccaneer,
never played for anyone else. And then of course you
(07:09):
got the coaching situation, the dynamic with Bowls. They gave
him a big contract extension, as they did to the
general manager, but that's never stopped this ownership group from
firing a coach. Gruden was on the contract for more
years when they canned them. It's happened other times. So
I think the fact that he's under contract, I don't
think that's going to matter. They're either going to show
(07:31):
confidence in him or are they going to think And
of course this game could go a long way towards it.
What a weird situation. Even if the Bucks win, which
I don't really think they will, but if they do,
they can't celebrate Saturday night. I mean, it's just weird.
Now you gotta wait for the Falcons New Orleans game.
A Lave's not playing. That doesn't help the Bucks cause.
(07:54):
But you know what, if you tie me down, I
think the suspense ends. On Saturday in the Panther locker
room with Canal was jumping up and down the week.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
Ahira, you mentioned Buck's great Derek Brooks, the all time
great linebacker there in your in your breakdown. You're a
Hall of Fame voter for a very long time. So
we have a couple of questions about the future of
former Panthers in terms of Hall of Fame voting. I'll
start with the great linebacker here, Luke Keickley, one of
the finalists again, do you think that this would be
(08:27):
the year that Luke Keickley gets that Hall of Fame nomination?
Speaker 2 (08:31):
A lot of people were surprised. See he didn't get
in last year. Now, first year of eligibility. You know,
it's a higher standard. Sometimes sometimes it's the higher standard.
Keickley's problem this year is you got two short fire guys.
I mean you do, and Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald.
(08:51):
I don't think anybody would argue about that, and so
they're taking up spots. The maximum is five. Last year
we didn't even get there because they've changed the rules
and you've got to get a certain percentage of voting.
And Kickley's got a good chance. You've got a good chance,
but it's not certainly not a guarantee. There are other
guys like Terrell Suggs. You got guys that have been
(09:14):
waiting a long time, like Tory Holt and Reggie Wayne,
Willie Anderson in the right tackle for the Bengals all
those years. And so look, you know, on that list
of fifteen finalists comes out, you could make the case
for all fifteen. Eli mannings back on the ballot. He's
going to take up another forty five minutes of conversation.
(09:36):
Like last year. I think the fact that it was
Kickley's first year maybe was a factor in some of
the voting. Here he comes along in year two. Now,
a lot of great players have had to wait. They
had If you look in the books through the years,
you'd say, gee, that guy's a no brainer. But really
it took him three years. Marvin Harrison, it took him
(09:58):
three years as great as he was. So Keickley's day
is coming, It's coming soon. This could be the I
give him a fifty to fifty chance to make it
this year.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Is Steve Smith just kind of stuck in a log jam?
Like he didn't? He didn't He's not one of the
fifteen finalis is he stuck in?
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Now?
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Fitzgerald, you know, goes to the finalist list as a
first year wide receiver. I really can't fault that. Is
he just stuck in a wide receiver log jam right now?
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Yeah, it's happened. Before you know, it happened. There was
a there was a Tim Brown, Andre Reid, Chris Carter
things about ten years ago, and and Carter won that Dottle.
But it took you know, five or six years, and
then once Carter got in, you know, then Brown and
Reed got in the subsequent years, so that that could happen.
(10:45):
But you're right. I was talking to somebody at the Bucks,
I think it was a player or coach, and we
were going over the ballot, and somebody said, where's Steve Smith?
And they mentioned him, you know, in particular because of
course the Bucks have played him so many times and
they were shocked that he didn't make the list of finalists.
They thought he's a Hall of famer. I watched him closely.
(11:07):
I'll never forget that playoff game. I believe it was
in Saint Louis, and I think it was the first
snap of overtime or double overtime, the first snap and
he caught like a sixty five yard touchdown pass. I mean,
that's one of the great plays in Panthers history. And
Smith would do that now. Patty Sinskis is a good
(11:29):
friend of mine. He used to cover the Panther, yeah,
for Church Charlotte paper for a long long time. He
used to tell me when I asked him about Steve Smith,
he used to deal with them every week, and he said,
personally he didn't like the guy. He didn't like the guy.
But as a football player, Pat says he's a Hall
(11:50):
of Famer, And I take great stock in what Pat says.
You know, he's got an al axa grind. You guys
saw him game in game out. He came to play,
He came to play in the locker room. He could
have been the carfin. He could have been a little
bit divisive. Maybe maybe give me the ball, give me
the ball. But you know, most receivers are like that.
(12:12):
I think the Bucks are kind of blessed because Mike
Evans isn't that type. Nora is Godwin By the way,
the Bucks are going to be missing a couple of
defensive players.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
And that's two quarters out for the Bucks.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Now, that's right, McCollums out. Dean's out. And the defense
has been a big, big problem. And I think that
Bowls's biggest problem post you know season, in his discussions,
you know, should he come back or not? You know,
the defense is the problem here, not that the offense
is great, but you know, fans got a lot more
(12:45):
confidence in the Buck offense. And you know that's the
Bowls the side of the ball. So you know, Caroline
is gonna do just enough on offense, just enough, and
you know, maybe take advantage of a couple of takeaways
and I think Dependzas will clinch it by by Saturday.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
I hope it happens, man, I hope it happens. And
then you can just get back in that hotel, Birah,
you know what I mean, get back in the hot
to watch the rest of the NFL action, all right, Irah. Hey,
Ira Kaufman Joe bucksfan dot com.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Thank you for joining us.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
And by the way, Ira, tell your guys, because you
know this couldn't be you. You couldn't possibly be the
one behind this the people that keep calling us the
stinking Panthers on y'all's website. All right, this week, all right,
tell him knock that off? All right, tell him that off.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Hey, I got I got a what question for you?
What I was talking about? That all pro ballot and
you guys see this guy play every week. I'm looking
at j C. Horn on my off basic with JC Horn?
Speaker 1 (13:42):
What are you saying about JC?
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Should I should I consider him for the old protein?
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Oh? Definitely, definitely, I think so.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
I mean, he get I think the one detriment with him,
he this olave got him real good in the one
Saints game, fell down a couple of times in coverage,
gave up a couple of big plays. He will commit penalty,
but man, he's a dog in it. He's been more
of a ballhawk this year, which has been one of
the questions. He's got some interceptions. I think his reputation
lately for physical play IRA has kind of gotten him
(14:10):
a little bit on some penalties where they're looking for
that now.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
But it's hard. Yeah, he's definitely all pro caliber. He's
not been at his best the whole season, but I
think it's still been all pro level though.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
All right, thanks guys,
