Speaker 1 (00:00):
Jake Delone, Panthers Radio Network and at all time, Panther
Great is with us. Jake, Happy holidays, man, how have
you been. What's going on?

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Man? I'm doing great.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
It's a it is a happy holiday season. It's a
fun season being a Panther fan because we've given ourselves
an opportunity to you know, we're knocking on that door.
We're not there yet, but we're starting to knock on
that door. And that's it's just something. It's just fun, man,
to be ready for a game. You're going into the
second week of December and everything's out in front.

Speaker 4 (00:31):
You know, dude, we're living it right now. Man. It
has been too long, you know.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
You guys we got spoiled you you you guys and
Foxy and Company and Smitty like you guys gave us
a lot of moments like this. River and Cam in
that group gave us a lot of moments like this.
But it's been it's been too long. So and I
noticed this. The Panthers do do this thing, Jake, where
they will send out calls, but they'll show the video
of you guys in the booth and it's often you

(00:56):
and Luke Keikley. You guys are like, you're like hitting
you like hitting him on the leg. Like you guys
are fired up like that your playing days. You both
you and Luke are loving these games. I can tell, no,
we do.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
I mean, listen, we have a passion for the Panthers, right,
it's a uh.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
You know, and Luke was a he was a one
and donner, meaning one team and only one team. And yeah,
I had four different teams. But really and truly I'm
a I'm a diehard Panther fan and we just want
to see success and we love watching the team grow
and we're seeing that when we watched him play, and
you know, we we get frustrated, we get aggravated, we

(01:31):
get happy.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
And it's funny.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
I saw a clip after the sack of Matthew Stafford
and the fumble recovery by Wantam and he's running and
Luke and I are excited, and we both start to
panic because we see the receiver chasing want.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Hum down from behind and he doesn't know.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
So the first thing, I'm like, oh my god, just
don't hit the ball because you're taught. I mean, you're
taught to tackle the football when a defender has it,
don't tackle him. Tackle the ball. They're not used to
running with it, so tackle the ball. And I'm like,
oh my gosh. And then Jonathan Stewart's in the background
because he sits in there and he's clapping like a
fifth grader when Derek sacks him and it's a fumble.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
So man, it's it's just.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
We have fun, we get excited.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
It's a it's just it's it's good.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
You're starting to see it, and I think we all
have seen it, like, hey, we've drafted pretty darn good
and you're just you're watching a team start to come together,
and uh, hopefully we can take advantage of it. But
I mean we still have to be prepared for it's
still some growing pains.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
I mean we're this young team.

Speaker 5 (02:32):
Yeah, it's been fun, but unpredictable fun as well, Like
there are some weeks we're stressed out and we don't
know what happened.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
In other weeks.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
Bryce is out there, he's, you know, setting near franchise
records for his performances. From your quarterback perspective, Jake, what
do you think leads right now to some of the
inconsistent play with Bryce y'ng.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
I think it's I think it's us as an offense,
to be very honest. Listen, you go back, Okay, so
that Atlanta game, we throw the ball all over the
yard and then we play against Sant fran and it
was a struggle, right, We just we weren't in sync.
You know, t mac he's a beautiful catcher. He catches
the easiest pass he probably had he all year. He

(03:12):
drops it right on the third down. So we never
sustained drives. Defense, uh gave us opportunities, and so it's frustrating.
And then you go against the Rams and what fifteen
for twenty But just how big were those twenty attempts?
You know, everything was It seemed like it was a
crucial time in the game and we needed to play
I don't want to say perfect, but we needed to
play really good football because that was a good team.

(03:34):
And that's all we did because we had substitutions in there.
But I just think offensively won all the combinations up front,
right with the offensive line.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
That's a continuity type position.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
But we're so young, and yeah, maybe people think, oh,
that's an excuse.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
No it's not. I mean that's just young retalented receivers.
Tam Mac still very young.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Xavier Lagat Jalen Kocher says, I mean we're just we're
some babies, man, and I just think we're not consistent
yet to know exactly who we are. But I think
you're starting to see, you know, we're kind of we're
kind of getting there.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah, And that's my whole question, Jake, is like are
we there yet or is this like this another step
along the way, Like you get close this year and
next year they're ready to break through and we're going
to find out in these last four games.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
You never okay, now, listen, Bo, you can never say
we think in next year. It's right in front of you.
You got to take it now, because listen, I walked
off the field in Houston after the Super.

Speaker 6 (04:33):
Bowl and there was never a doubt in my mind
that we weren't going to be back in the game
the next year. And here we are in early November
the following year, and we're one and seven with a
complete shell of a football team.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
That what we.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Participated in, you know, nine months earlier, ten months earlier.
So I just I think you got to take advantage
of the situation now. I mean, that's that's exactly what
you have to do?

Speaker 4 (04:56):
All right?

Speaker 1 (04:56):
I feel I feel like Jake' scolded me. But you're
right though, man, Like I'm just to hear Jake banking
on oh, like the progress will keep being linear, and
I guess nothing's guaranteed. It's just my fear, Jake, is
that they are that young team. That's I guess. There's
two thoughts in my head, Jake, you tell me what
you think about these. The one is, are we just
that young team that won't get the consistency consistency thing

(05:20):
down enough to win the division? But then I have
the angel on my other shoulder saying, watch this Bucks team.
They're not the same. This is not the best version
of the Bucks. Like, what do you think about those two?
Those two things?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
I get it.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
And and yeah, they're not the same Bucks team because
their best player of the last decade has barely played
this year and is he activated for tonight?

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Is he gonna play tonight?

Speaker 3 (05:45):
I think they activated them Mike Kevin.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, so you know, a Mecca Buca started out on
fire and then you know Baker's banged up.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
They've had a ton of O line type of issues
and it's just one of those deals. But they're getting
their best player back.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
I mean, how much will that help?

Speaker 3 (06:01):
So and listen, I understand it's not the same Bucks
team maybe, but buddy.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
When you watched the film closely against the Saints last week,
and I know the weather was terrible, they weren't the.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Same Bucks team because the Saints made them not be
the same same same Bucks team.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
I'm higher on the Saints than most people. I'm sorry,
but first.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
Time we played them, I don't know if I was
on with you guys, and not like you watch film.
That's not a bad football team at all, and they're
flying around on defense. They're super excited about the young quarterback.
I mean, we got we got a tough task at hand,
you know, with us, So yes, we let's keep a
side eye, you know, on what happens tonight. But we
control our own destiny. But we have to be ready

(06:40):
for the Saints team on Sunday afternoon.

Speaker 4 (06:41):
Yeah, they got Evans and JAYL mcmellan back. It looks
like they're getting health.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
And that's that's how we're looking at it.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Right.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
So we had the late by, you know, and everyone
talks about it, but you can't think of how great
of a time that that it came after a super
short week, you beat one of the best teams in football.
It's not the best in the Rams, and now these
young kids could be like, Okay, this is it.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
But I think our I guess.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
Our seasoned veterans and our safe season with the j
C Horns. A. Shawn's a little bit older, but Derek.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Brown, those are still young guys.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
And it's like, Guys, we've lost every year, We've never
been in this position.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Let's not take let's not you know, do everything we
have to do to take advantage of this situation, because
what a great situation.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
To be in.

Speaker 5 (07:26):
Jake, what have you thought of Tyler Shuck so far
for the Saints, especially with the way he's performed lately, Very.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Impressed to listen, the first time we played them, he
had started against the Rams the week prior, and the
Rams they were on a heater, right Matthew Stafford was
was throwing the ball extremely what he still is, but
that game they had good coverage. He was just putting
the ball in places that it was The throw was
was better than but Shuck played pretty good, took some hits,
and then against us we had a couple opportunities on

(07:55):
third down plays where he stepped up in the pocket
and was able to hit Juwan Johnson which could have
been a sack on the first the third down of
the game.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Then again later on in the game, he.

Speaker 3 (08:04):
Made some plays and that's what he's doing. Man, he's
a big, strong, athletic kid. They ran him a little
bit more, but he's older.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
And what I mean by that.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
He's had so much experience in college and different systems.
But I'm telling you he came from Louisville. Jeff Brown, that.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Guy's a hell of a coach. Man.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Those guys are great coaches, and they're more NFL ready.
I believe the Louisville quarterbacks than most. I just think
it's the NFL type system. It's the under center type system.
That the kid was ready, and you got to give
Kellen more than credit. Everybody wanted him to start at
the beginning of the season, right, that's how you draft him. Well,

(08:42):
they let him sit for two much absorb game plans
and watch the team and grow, and those coaches had
to learn about that football team. But man, they're playing
good and that team rallies around him.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
I will say that definitely definitely. You were that sort
of quarterback too. You know that the team would rally
around you as well. By the way, you just reminded
me of something Jake, we hadn't talked about this week.
Every one of those long pass plays by Shuck Tour
to Johnson and the one was to alave Horn fell
down on a couple of them, but they were all

(09:12):
on third and longs I forgot about that. Everyone was
on third and seven or more. They were so close
to getting off the field every one of those drives.

Speaker 3 (09:20):
So any guy Nick Sporton almost had the sack on
the first third down. He came up on Shuck's right side,
and listen, give the kid credit. And those are the
plays that need to be made. But again, like that's
that's kind of what you're gonna see. What is this
young Saints team And they're not young on defense, they're
older on defense. But my gosh, I don't know, man,
it's just that team's different. Taysom Hill came back, Chase

(09:43):
Young came back, a lot of those guys weren't there
early in the season. And to Mario Davis, I'd love
to I want to go steal his water bottle on
the sidelines because it has to be it has to
be the fountain of youth drink that he's drinking.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Unbelievable that we have to.

Speaker 5 (09:57):
Block Allante Taylor. By the way, the texture points out
one with Taylor.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Yeah that was another he did that this game.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
He did that last year, the first game of the season.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah, he's very good, very He's very nosy in the
nickel position, aggressive but in a good way. So yeah,
I think you'll see us hopefully play some of our
best football. I like Austin Corbett going back to Gord
for us, getting Kade made back, so you know, and
hopefully we can have some fresh bodies and and and.

Speaker 2 (10:25):
Put a good performance.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
Man, because everything's right in front of us.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
And you know what, sometimes you just as a team,
you have to say, why not us? Right?

Speaker 4 (10:32):
Why not? That is true.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
It's it's starting to have that look of a season
where it is kind of one like you everybody's seen
those teams in all of sports. The why not us?
Hears like, hey, we're still here. Everybody thought we'd be
you know that we were a nice story, but now
we're not here. We're still here with four games to go. Jake,
I got to bring up your appearance on the Manning
Cast because it allowed it allowed you to tell the

(10:55):
story that I believe we have asked you about. I'd
be two or three times to tell on this show alone,
not to mention maybe our other shows too talking to
you about it, but you took the story national to
the Mannings and their viewers of the time that your
pants ripped in that game against the Falcons.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
Is and I need to ask this question.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
Is that the thing you What do you get asked
the most about by Panther fans? Is it I remember
that time when your pants ripped? Is there something else?
Is it the Super Bowl? What do Panther fans bring
up the most with you that you have to relive?

Speaker 2 (11:30):
Well, I will say that is.

Speaker 3 (11:33):
If I have to rank the top five or whatever,
it be closer to number five.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
I think a lot of time has passed early on.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
Yes, I mean, you know it's been so long ago,
but it's always Hey, the super Bowl, the Jacksonville game,
that the same, the Rams game, you.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Know those those games. But yeah, that was one that Yeah,
that was fun doing that.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
You know, you have production meetings leading up to it
and you're going in in the fourth corner.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
So you have to have these stories for pare in.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
Case this game is is isn't a tight game, right,
and you gotta kind of fill air, you know.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
So yeah, we had a couple of those stories ready
to go. But yeah, buddy, that was a.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
That was that was an interesting you know, there was
no one in the stands. I think it was late
in the year. Jim Moore was their coach, and I
don't remember if he got fired and we were playing
for something like that was gonna be our eleventh win
for the playoffs, and it was just yeah, it was early,
early in the game.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
It was number seventy five.

Speaker 3 (12:30):
I'm drawing a blank on his name, and it was
the toe of his cleat and when I tell you
it ripped it, I had a brush burn on my cheek,
like it just ripped.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
It and went right down and I'm like, man, this
burns and it's cold.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
That Jeff Mitchell our center, who was I mean, really
and truly a just kind of the way he said, hey, hey, belone,
your butts hanging out, but he didn't use those words,
and I'm like, I knew that, and I looked at
the ref and he actually, I mean he last, he
laughed at me.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Man, I'm like, I need a time out.

Speaker 3 (13:02):
He goes, I can't give you one for a wardrobe
like a wardrobe malfunction uniform. And then Foxy just looked
at me, like, what are you smalling of?

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Time out for first driver of the game. And I
showed him and he, I mean, he really.

Speaker 3 (13:13):
Just started laughing at me. I mean, because that's all
you can do is sometimes things happen in the game that.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
You know, it just happens and you just kind of
roll with it.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
That's class has your own open air stadium back there
for all bit there you go, Hey, hey, Jake, the
texta line wants me to ask you this, and it's
to come in like ten times already your reaction to
phillip Rivers coming back at forty four, and they're asking,
right now, does old Jake have anything left.

Speaker 4 (13:42):
In the arm here for a comeback at fifty Listen,
God bless.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
Him, is what I'll say.

Speaker 3 (13:48):
This is a big, strong, country strong man, right, but
five years buddy, that's hard now. I know him and
Shane Psyching are like best of friends and it's a
similar offense.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
And I did watch some clips yesterday.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
I think it was maybe during stretch or the pre
warm up. The ball comes off his hand still very easy,
you know, and i' would assuming they try to run
the football, But I just I don't know. I mean,
one of the freaks of nature is Vinnie Testaverdi, and
we signed him when he was forty.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Four years old. But Vinnie was still playing.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
And sure enough, I want to say the first week
it was when I had Tommy John. We go to
Arizona and Vinnie knew the system right. It was Dan
Henning system, and Vinnie was with Dan forever of the
whole Bill Parcells, all that system. And so Vinnie throws
to three hundred plus and then maybe the following week,
we played the Colts at home and we had like
an eighteen yard drive to start the game. Pydon barely

(14:42):
played in the first half. We sit down in halftime,
I kid you not, and I'm in there, you know,
like I'm just in the way, and halftime last all
but thirty seconds. Well, Vinnie's like, yeah, I can't get up,
and then like what do you mean He's like, yeah,
my back and my cast like I'm done co and
like he literally his body.

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Just kind of locked up.

Speaker 3 (15:02):
On him and Ryan familiar in our trainer who was
there forever he was with Vinnie with the Miami Hurricanes,
and Vinnie was like.

Speaker 2 (15:09):
Ryan, I can't go, so we'll go out for half.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
And I think it was what David Carr, maybe David
Carr that more one of them has to go out
and play because Vinnie locked up. Because listen, as much
of a physical freak he was, and watching him spot
the repetitions of four oh five in the weight room
and things like that. Man, for all the times undefeated, guys,
it's it's undefeated, and God bless him that he's going

(15:34):
out to do that. I'm gonna be like everyone else,
dying to watch him play and see what happens.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
I think it'd be a great story. But man, yeah,
it's a I don't know, guys, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
We're hoping for the best for him, but man, he
hadn't played in five years. I can't believe that Vinnie story.
Oh my goodness. He'll always have that Cardinals game though. Man,
he was balling. He was balling, all right, Yeah he was.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
Yeah, So we'll see, man, not listen, you can't say nobody.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
Everybody's not going to be full of fulfill it because
he's that guy, right, I mean he's a grandfather.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
We understand that he is a grandfather. Yes, that's going.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
And what you're doing this weekend, I'm gonna watch my
grandfather push.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
I mean, like you think about it.

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Unbelievable.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
All right, Jake, you're the best.

Speaker 5 (16:18):
Man.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
Enjoyed the game on Sunday. Thanks as always. Okay, guy, thanks,
There we go, Jake, Jacob. Watch my grandfather play against
the Ale. It is so crazy, it really is.

Speaker 2 (16:29):
