Speaker 1 (00:16):
Now you know, I think you know they have a
special offensive line there too, they do, so that helps
things out. And that's what I think people are going
to realize about Carolina. I mean, they got an O
line that can physically impose their will on football teams,
and of course they can do that on the run
stopping Dallas Cowboys. I mean they got Kenny Clark. Now
they're stopping the run. Guys, look at this. Whoa, Yeah,
(00:38):
no they're not, they're not. The Cowboys defense is horrible,
I mean horrible. It's gonna be on the offense all
year long to make plays and they're fun and they're exciting.
But man, it's a lot on Dak Prescott because we
know this Carolina offense is not great. But I mean,
they did whatever they wanted for the most part of
the day yesterday. It was all about the run game
and then of course breaks young could and he used
(01:00):
to look more and more comfortable and makes a handful
of big plays in the past game.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
And that's all they needed in a game like this. WHOA.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Even Chris Sims saying nice things, now, he did have
to point out that Dallas was terrible. Bone he did
have to point that out in there as well, but
we'll take it. Chris sim slowly. But Charlte you coming around, baby.
You learned, in the words a future Penn State head
coach bat Rule, to.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Respect the panther. You learned to respect the panther. Thank you,
Thank you. Maddie.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
See, I'm already thinking of just teaming up with Maddie
real quick because I want to get a panther conversation
going bone about Avero and Canalis and our fans starting
to come around with these guys.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
I'm not gonna lie bone.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
I'm about two weeks removed from speaking of losing faith
in Dave Canalis, so I'm in this conversation too. But
there's a lot of y'all out there that said similar
things about Canalis. There's a lot of y'all that had
been riding a varro like he's seabiscuit for year LUs
now for God's sake. So anyway, we got a conversation
to have here, I believe. But I just want to
(02:05):
send a sycamore shout out bone to the Carolina Hurricanes
who have started the season with three wins, one of
them in ot and Philly. But with three wins, they
won last night, Bone five to one over the San
Jose Sharks. Wanted to give them a little bit of love.
Sycamore shout out where the boys get back to the
tar Heel State. They deserve some ice cold dang sycamores,
(02:27):
man Mountain Candy, surveys, the Southern Girl, blah, whatever it is,
so they get a little sycamore love. I may Bone
have forgotten to mention them at the start of the show,
Pucks McLean may have let the Canes nation down.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
The interesting part about them is Slaven is injured right now.
He's going through some testing. Hopefully it's nothing too severe.
But they're winning. They're winning some games here without really
their best overall guy. So that's interesting start of the
year right now. What do you think Bone?
Speaker 3 (02:53):
You were pretty critical of Canalis two weeks ago too,
so let's.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Start with him.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
I want the conversation to be about Canalis and Davero.
Are y'all starting to believe in them more? Or do
you want to say it's way too early for that.
I'm going to keep being the skeptic. That's what some
are already saying on the text line about Avero. You
coming around on Canalis. I want to say I've liked
October Canalis. I've been more positive back in the last
(03:17):
couple of weeks. Though whatever I said in September, DABC,
sorry about that baby.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
We moved on to October. Now it's a different world.
Jake Dolom said something to me that was or to
me to us yesterday on the show that was very
interesting in regards to what a panther wegend Mac thinks
about the play calling of Dave Canals.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
We have the audio, we.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Have that cut fit see if you can dig that up.
I think KB was playing it.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
I think ow to me was eye opening of Wow,
he's he's doing some work here. The one thing I'll
say about Canalis, and I was criticizing him just last
week about this. Even in the Miami win, there's still moments.
You saw a couple of time outs bowing that had
to be used, you know, prematurely. This week, there still
is this element of not getting the plays in quick
(04:05):
enough sometimes the operational stuff. I know some people didn't
like the clock management bone at the end of the
first half. Why aren't we being more aggressive trying to
score a touchdown?
Speaker 2 (04:17):
I think you saw the play out they got points.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
They kept back off the field, it almost didn't because
of the lateral, and then they knew they were getting
the ball second half and they went out and got seven.
So I feel like that turned out well. The Miami
clock management was a little shaky, but I think you
bring up a good point when Greg Goldsen, when Jake
delom says this about him and Luke Keekley's conversations about
(04:40):
coach Canalis's play calling, You've got to listen.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
Sitting next to him, we're watching the games.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
I watched him.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
Diagnose an offense so fast, like he recognizes certain formations
and things, and he'll make hand gestures like you think
his screen coming or he thinks is going here, and
you just see the robotic nature of.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
How he played and what he looked at.
Speaker 5 (05:01):
And then the last week against Miami, he took the
handsets off and he said, Canalis knows how to call plays.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I said, when they can say that.
Speaker 5 (05:09):
He goes, ah, he said, you know, Jake, he said,
he's keeping me.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Confused on a couple of things. He said, And it's working.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
He said. And then again last week early on he goes.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
He can call plays.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
Yeah, right there, that is I was there too. If
you couldn't hear me over Mac a wooing over what
Jake was saying. I said, it really exciting. He sounded
like a cartoon character. But Mac was involved in that
conversation as well. There Mac right there, And that was
not like on the radio broadcast. That's a private moment
between Luke and Jake. For Luke Mac to be wowed
and confused by Dave Canalis's play calling, that means he's
(05:43):
dialing up some really good stuff. I wonder, And we'd
have to talk to like past head coaches about this
as far as the game management stuff goes, how long,
like what for the play callers that are head coaches?
How long until you found that balance where you felt
comfortable with the game management and the play calling at once.
(06:04):
How long does it take? Because it would make a
lot of sense that can Alis Mack is getting used
to play calling while the game management still needs a
little bit of work.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Well yeah, yeah, I mean listen, he only had one
years of play caller for you came in. Yeah, then
you throw in play calling en being a first time
head coach, I said this last week, he is still learning.
I don't think we as fans, Bone give grace to
young first time head coaches like that to that they're learning.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Anybody that takes a job that's different. Right.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
You may have been a great salesman, now you're the
sales manager.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
It's different.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
So I just I think Bone, I think there's got
to be some grace given him that he is learning.
But I do think when you hear comments like that
from guys that know football way more than we do,
I think we need to take notice of that. I
think the way he's stuck with the run against Miami
down seventeen was pretty admirable. We've been asking for him
(06:58):
to do that sort of thing. I think Bone, he
would have run the crap out of the football. Honestly,
if we didn't dig big holes in all the road
games this season, I am by no means crowning them.
There's a tone on the text line of people saying,
don't crown Canalis, don't crown a Varo. Carolina Brinks brings
up a good point way too early on Canalis and
a Varro. I need to see how they play on
(07:19):
the road, and that's fair too, But I just think
maybe and they haven't been getting blasted this week but
I think maybe we open our minds up if we've
been skeptical, open our minds up to Hey, this process
on both sides of the ball might be working.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
Also, his ability to listen to the players and adapt
has been notable lately too, and that goes a long
way that he's not stubborn and stuck in his way.
He's when a player max to jets something, he and
the staff are listening to those guys, and right now
it's working. Where there's that, there's that partnership. There's a
lot of talk of that cohesion between Morgan and Canalis
(07:58):
that they try to get when it comes to foster management. Well,
how about the cohesion between he and his players where
they see something, they acknowledge, something they want to do,
and he's willing to figure out how to make that work.
And that's a that's gaining the trust of your players.
That's a massive deal right now.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
Texter says Canalis needs to follow Rivera and get himself
a game management coach.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
He references George Lee.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
I don't think we know a lot about George Lee
is kind of a man behind the man type figure
with the Panthers, but he is the guy that gets
mentioned at all these game management situations, for example, sounds
like a war general. For example, when we chase points Bony,
when we chase points against Arizona, George Lee was responsible
for that. He told Canals to go for two. So anyway,
(08:44):
but that's the guy that's handling that sort of stuff.
As far as Zavero goes this, the y'all do not
seem willing to give Avero much players here today, even
though the defense bone is now up to ninth in
run defense, and I believe not too far behind that
in total defense right now, tenth in total defense right now,
(09:05):
let's see what we're getting on a Varo On the
text line, I still think a Varrow is too stubborn
and so married to his system he will not change
even when circumstances dictate. So many examples, blitzing so infrequently,
not letting horn cover their number one receiver. I feel
this will hurt us when the schedule gets tougher. That's
PSL sucker. This dude says, A Varro has nothing to
(09:27):
do with the improvement of the Carolina Panthers, so when
they're bad, it's.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
All on him, But when they get better, he has
nothing to do with it. If you're not hey, if
you want to say, hey, you've got to see more,
that's fine. But if you're not willing to tip your
hat and give a little credit to a varrow right now,
you're just an old stubborn mule and the old subburb reel.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
Take that.
Speaker 4 (09:49):
Take that your mule, because you can't just sit there
and blame him when things go bad. No, that's nothing.
Give him some sort of credit when it goes right.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
That's not that's just that's just, that's just being a
listen so people, I like Mule was nicer. Now Bone
is escalated from mule to jerk. I'm moving up to ass.
I want to. I have defended Varo his entire tenure here.
I have defended him. The reason why is I can
(10:18):
remember twenty twenty three before we lost Burns and Frankie Louvu,
and I remember being number fourth in total defense and
I think seventh or eighth and yards per play allowed,
and I remember the only reason why Bone the points
allowed were much higher is because of how horrible the
offense was, and we turned the ball over, we didn't
(10:39):
move the ball, We gave them short fields constantly made
it really hordle on defense.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
We also did not possess the ball. Bone.
Speaker 3 (10:45):
This was Bryce's rookie year. This was the Frank Reich
Thomas Brown, you know hold debacle. The offense was so
horrible that for the defense to do what they did
statistically yards per play and yards per game, I thought
was outstanding. I also know what he did in Denver.
It was damn good. They traded Bradley Chubb away and
had tons of guys hurt and they were still eighth
untal defense. So listen, do I agree with everything he does?
(11:08):
Do I wish j C. Horn could cover the number
one receiver a lot more than this? Yeah, I definitely do.
Do I want them to blitz more?
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:17):
But I also realized Bone there's a method to his madness,
Like he's using a scheme that Vic Fangio rode to
a Super Bowl title last year in Philly.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
That's his mentor.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
They've got better personnel this year, Bone, so they're playing
a lot better. I think that's the biggest change. But
I'm not saying he's perfect, but I think he's doing
a pretty good job.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
I think he's a pretty good football coach.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
In the offseason, if we would have told you that
in mid October eight the Panthers defense would be tenth
in total defense based off what they were last year
and based off water expectation was this year, you would
have called us cuckoo for cocoa puffs. Absolutely, let's keep
it run. Do I keep that in perspective? Is it perfect?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
No?
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Is it still a work in progress when to getting
more pressure and sacks? Of course it is. But don't
sit there and tell me that anyone thought it was possible.
Even if Derek Brown coming back, We thought, can dB
get them to like twentieth or so. No one thought
at any point in the season ever, whether it's now,
whatever it may be, that they would have a run
where they would allow fifty rush yards until two games.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
And by the way, let me give some more context
to what they did on Sunday. Dallas was the number
one offense in the league coming in. The Panthers held
them bone to one hundred and fourteen yards below their average.
The Panthers also bone shut down a rushing attack had
on the thirty one yards that hadn't had lower than
one hundred and seventeen yards all season in the previous
five games. I'll actually point to Miami. Y'all see what
(12:42):
Chan did on Sunday. Oh yeah, against Jim Harball's nasty
physical team. A Chan ran for one hundred and twenty
eight eight yards of carry. We shut his butt down.
So I just want to point out what other teams
are doing against these running games that we're shutting down.
Avero has players up front. Dan Morgan has given him
players up front. Last year he didn't have Dereck Brown.
(13:04):
He lost lutheruin Burns before the season. Jack Thompson got hurt.
I mean, I just think we got to look at
full context.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
I mean the way Atlanta looks at times on offense,
and then you look back and say the Panthers allowed
zero points to that team. Where there are moments in
this season where Robinson was like Barry Sanders out there,
got the number.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Two total offense in football, held him to zero points
here in Charlotte Lake.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
What's another one, Dallas.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Dallas's offense really scored twenty points on our defense because
Ted McMillan not catching that football led to the interception.
And I don't understand the penalty on Doubtle. That didn't
look excessive to me at the end of that. But anyway,
I digress, it wasn't near as bad as damn rose
boom penalty. But they get the ball to twelve yard
Linves a twelve yard touchdown drive. You can't hold the
defense responsible for that, No, not at all. So like
(13:50):
that's twenty points against the number one offense in football,
the defense really can be attributed to it.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
It was a really good performance.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
And honestly, when I watched that game Backbone the other night,
it was George Pickens and no one else like it
literally was Would we like to have.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Horn on him earlier? Yeah? Do I think Horn? Should?
Speaker 3 (14:09):
I understand that zone team's bone are not going to
be not gonna get their number one cover corner on
the number one receiver near all the time. Understand just
that's just the way the makeup is. But should he
have been on him sooner?
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (14:20):
I would like to see that. Maybe that's something that
Avero will finally give into. But I want to point
this out too. Most number one corners are not on
number one receivers all the time. Matter of fact, I
don't even if anybody's on the number one receiver all
the time, like we think they are boned Patrick Sartan
was on Garrett Wilson sixty two percent of the snaps
the other day.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
Interesting, that's it.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
So I don't want to act like every corner covers
the number one receiver every game for every other team.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
It's really not that kind.
Speaker 4 (14:51):
Also, one thing that elevated things here recently is the
green dots, which al linebacker. That's got to get some
credit there. Good cut that adjustment there, because look, we
kind of know that the linebacker spot is a place
that can be upgraded. But this defense is playing really
well and I wouldn't say the linebackers are great, so
they're maximizing the most out of those two guys right now. Also,
when we come back, we're gonna turn our attention to
(15:13):
SEC football. It is one of the most loaded weekends
max schedule wise, we have seen in the SEC in
a very long time. We'll go through all that and
more with Chris Doring, our friend from the SEC Network
on Sports Radio nine seven WFZ.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
All right, y'all, back and ball with you.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
I just asked the boys, what are we doing? That's
and that what you want your fearless leader bone to
be on top of it?
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Like that?
Speaker 3 (15:51):
And then I was informed the great Chris Doring is
on hold. How dare I forget that? How dare I did?
He said, Chris Doran is ready to go? Max said, great,
what are you doing here?
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Ready to go?
Speaker 4 (16:02):
It was embarrassing. We didn't treat Peter Burns this way
last week.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
But it was a little bit like Bryce trying to
call time out against Miami that he didn't have.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
It was.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
It was a little bit of your signal caller not
being up on his game management situations. Doring never played
with a signal caller like that, though, Baby never played
with a signal caller like that.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Chris dor move you out for the other quarterback.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
Chris Doran joins us SEC Network also SEC Radio. He
joins US here on the Mac m Bone Show. Chris,
how you been man? What's going on?
Speaker 6 (16:35):
Good morning?
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Hey?
Speaker 6 (16:35):
My name is Chris Dorry. I used to play for
the Gators. I'm here to talk about SEC football with you.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
That's what his dude is that might take care a
caller and run me out of here at some point, Chris.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
I just got I just got a text. Man, How
does this hit you? I'm sure you've already had this thought.
Texter says man, we are halfway through the college football season.
How is that possible? Does that hit you and make
you sad? Or do you not allow your mind to
go there?
Speaker 6 (17:00):
I don't want my mind to go very sad. I mean,
I think we wait all offseason to have the fall
roll around, and then it goes by quicker than we
can ever even imagine. So now I feel like we're
here at the midway point and we know less about
this team, these teams and how things are going to
play out than we ever have before. So's a lot
(17:20):
of intrigue left. Still some great football remains, but it's
definitely gone by too quick.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Chris.
Speaker 4 (17:24):
When we were talking to you in the offseason about
South Carolina, the defensive losses were the concern and how
did they replace those guys on defense where they have sellers?
So the offense should be okay. How surprised are you
that right now the game offense is one twenty third
in the nation And how did they get to this
point where the offense is so bad?
Speaker 6 (17:45):
Yeah, I'm shocked that's the case, because I really felt
like they were going to take a step forward. You know,
I added some pieces, even though you know you lose
a good amount on defense there. The recruiting on both
sides of the ball was at an all time great
level under Shane Beemer. You know you felt like the offense,
with another year with Leonora Seller's leading, was gonna take
(18:07):
a step forward. But man, every time I mentioned this
on Saturday Night, like every time you take a look
at their offense, it's just Lenori's Sellers making some incredible escape,
scrambling for his life, either making a play or throwing
it away. But man, the stress that must he must
feel for trying to carry that whole offense himself is
(18:28):
probably completely overwhelming. I give him a lot of credit
from what he's doing, but right now, it just doesn't
look like they have much rhythm on offense at all.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Chris, you mentioned this, we don't know a lot right
We're halfway through the season and we have so many questions,
and I would put the SEC up there like this
is a fun SEC to where I don't really know
what's going to happen. Do you think we have reached
a point where you've started to figure out who the
cream and the crop is in the SEC? Or do
(18:58):
you still like Alabama A and M probably look the best.
Are you ready to say, hey, those are the two
best teams in the SEC?
Speaker 2 (19:05):
Or is it not that simple?
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (19:06):
I don't think it's that simple yet. I mean, Alabama
certainly has ascended to the top of my power rankings
in Texas, A and M. You know, I've talked a
lot here recently about how I feel like they may
have the best the highest ceiling of any team in
the SEC, but unlocking that potential can be challenging sometimes.
I still think Ole Miss is a really good team.
We'll we'll figure it out this week when they go
(19:27):
to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. But you know,
I do think that there's less clarity than we've had
in a long time. The parody from top to bottom
is significant. Uh. You don't really have the elite teams
in the SEC, and I don't think you have elite
teams nationally anymore. I think everybody's flawed. You know, watching
that that Washington State Ole Miss game on Saturday, at first,
(19:51):
I was kind of disgusted at the way, you know
that the game was going almost going up and down
the field but not finishing drives very well, uh, and
leaving with a three point win, but lank Kivit said afterwards,
he said he wasn't very pleased with it, but it's
a survive in advanced situation, and I think that's a
great way to encapsulate what the SEC is about. It's
(20:12):
not always going to be the most aesthetically pleasing, it's
certainly not going to be a dominant performance, but walking
away with a W is the most important thing on
a Saturday in the fall. And so I think, you
know we're gonna still have I probably end up I
would imagine with the four, five, nine, and three teams,
I think the SEC Championship participants probably could end up
(20:33):
with two losses each at least. But on Monday on
our show, we used the analytics of what the odds
of the teams reaching Atlanta for the SEC Championship are
and that the two favorites still resoundingly are Alabama and Georgia.
So the more things changed, the more kind of they
stayed the same too, Chris.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
Last week, All Miss and Tennessee kind of got in
some unexpected battles there, more so than we thought entering
the game. We start to look at the stretch run
of the season here in the second half. Who do
you trust more maybe as a playoff team, potentially Old
miss or Tennessee.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Who's more dangerous to you, man?
Speaker 6 (21:13):
I think Old Misses right now. Tennessee. I've been very
impressed with Joey Aguilar I thinks one of the best
stories of the season to this point, with Nicoya Malayava
Levin and fans feeling a little despondent maybe about what
their quarterback situation was going to be. But agular I
think has operated that offense better than what Nico did
last season. The thing that troubles me about Tennessee right
(21:34):
now is their defense, and the Tim Banks did a
fantastic job. Really, the reason they were in the playoff
last year was because of the defense. In a lot
of ways, they're struggling right now. They're not very healthy
in the secondary, so trying to get them back to
being able to stop the run. Arkansas ran up and
down the field on them on Saturday in the first half.
(21:56):
They give up a ton of explosive pass plays as well.
They'll be te that obviously this week with Alabama.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
But I.
Speaker 6 (22:04):
Have some suspicions about Ole Miss a little bit. But
I do think between you know, Trinidad Chambliss, who I
think is another one of those great stories. Keiwan Lacy,
they're running back, is a perfect fit in Lane Kippin's offense.
And then Pete Golding on the defensive side. He's one
of the best defensive minds in all of college football.
He's found a way to get that group better and better.
(22:25):
And uh, you know so, I think from a complete
look at these two teams, I trust Olems a little
bit more.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
We got some fun match we'res on Chris Doring SEC
Network SEC Radio on the Mack and Bone Show. Even
though I apparently forgot he was here, He's still nice
enough to do the interview.
Speaker 2 (22:40):
That's how nice he is. Most people want to hung
the hell up on us.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Fine boy, I want to hung up on his phone
if I disrespected the man that way.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
But he's found he's.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Got to raise campaign campaign fund, so he might have
to go anywhere, all right, Chris, Let's talk about though
some of the matchups this week. Man, As as always
this time of year, there are some good ones in
the SEC. Two of the headliners we've talked about. You
talk about these teams. Let's talk about the matchups. Alabama Tennessee.
You just talked about Tennessee and you know, their last
(23:09):
couple of weeks, you know, kind of having to fight
to win those games. It just feels like Alabama's playing
so much better in there at home. Oh, Miss Georgia
feels toss upy to me. What do you think about
those two matchups?
Speaker 6 (23:20):
Yeah, I mean, I think, going back to what I
said about Alabama, I think they're playing the best right now.
And with that being said, I do still have some
suspicions about their ability to stop the run. Defensively, the
offensive line has given up far too much pressure. Unfortunately,
Ty Simpson has been able to make plays when he's
under duress. But I'm interested to see what Tennessee's strategy
(23:42):
is to try to protect that secondary, that injured secondary.
You know, do they blitz a lot more, do they
try to bring pressure. So that's a dynamic that I'm
interested in. But I think I think Alabama is the
better teamsco the game is in Tuscaloosa. Tennessee has won
two of the last three in this series, but both
of those in Knoxville, so it'll be a little different
(24:03):
challenge at Brian Tenney for Ole Miss, you know as
well as they've played to this point in time. They
go into Athens as a six six and a half
point underdog right now, Revenge is on the mind of
Kirby smartin that defense from last year, that entire Georgia team.
But I look at the old Miss defense. The reason
they won that game against Georgia last year was because
(24:23):
of the defensive line, their ability to create pressure on
Carson Beck. They don't have that same sort of line
of scrimmage game that they had last season, so I'm
anxious to see what they can do to affect Gunner Stockton,
who was an absolute monster last week against Auburn, kept
getting hit and getting up and battling play after play.
Right now third in the country in QBR as well,
(24:44):
So I probably lean towards the Georgia Bulldogs, but I
do think they are a more susceptible version of themselves
than they've been in a long time too.
Speaker 4 (24:54):
Chris, I was thinking about this driving in today, and
you're the perfect guy to ask this question, even though
it pertains still a storyline in the ACC. As you know, Chris,
things are not exactly going well right now for Bill
Belichick here in Chapel Hill, and I was thinking, could
you imagine if this was back in the day, what
your guy Steve Spurrier would be saying about the Belichick
situation right now?
Speaker 6 (25:14):
Oh man, he'd be teed up on a platform, right,
I mean. And that's the funny thing about it. It's like
we all knew it was going to go this way.
I don't I don't know why, you know, we thought
there was gonna be anything other than this guy that
hadn't coached in college football in a long, long, long time,
a guy that was nearing the end of his his
great coaching career. I just I think the thing that's
(25:39):
maybe more surprising is how much of a dumpster fire
it actually is. I thought they would struggle on the field,
but I didn't realize that they would have all these
shenanigans around. And for a guy that's always been as
focused and about the details and business of college of
football in general, for him to have allowed all this
stuff the sideshow off the field is really the most surprising.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
Did you think that the referees and the replay folks
deserved the blasting they got for the fumble situation in
the Auburn game. Did you think that was definitely a touchdown,
And did you think they shoot the refs should get
heat for Kirby Smart, you know, and the whole time
out clapping situation, Like, what what did you think about
those narratives coming out of that Auburn Georgia game.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
Look, I thought it. I thought Saturday was a bad
day for SEC officiating across the board. You know, there
was some questionable calls, some some things that that certainly
drew the ire of coaches and fans. But at the
end of the day, I thought, Auburn, you know, don't
don't fumble the ball going in. Don't give the reason
that the referees a reason to decide an outcome against you.
(26:42):
You fumble there at the you know, the onei's yard line.
You had a chance to put what felt like the
nail in the coffin at the time, but you don't
finish the play, and still at that point the balls
backed up. Just get a stop on defense. Georgia's offense
had did nothing to that point in time. You get
to stop, you get the ball right back, maybe you
get points before the half. But instead they let Georgia
(27:03):
go eighty eight yards get a field goal. The momentum
changes and then Auburn goes into a shell where they
do nothing on offense I think forty yards the rest
of the game. So that's my problem with Auburn is
that you know, yeah, you've had some calls that have
gone against you, but how about finding a way to
overcome those any in the Oklahoma game and Georgia game,
(27:24):
there was still a lot of football. This wasn't a
call on the last play of the game. Yeah, it sucks, man,
that that happens in football. Coach Burger used to talk
to us about, Hey, we're gonna go out, We're gonna
play for sixty minutes. Good things are going to happen.
Bad things are going to happen, but at the end
of the ball game, let's look up and see how
we did. And I think this team, I think they
have a lack of real leadership. I think they you know,
(27:45):
when things go bad and they kind of wither into
a shell. But I think a lot of that starts
with their coach talking about officiating too much. When when
you give, you know, your players a reason to feel
like they have an excuse, they're gonna use it.
Speaker 3 (27:58):
I was just thinking the same thing when Hugh Freeze.
You can tell he is shaken by the officiating. That
kind of spreads to the player, you know, and I
I had that. Say they come out with forty yards
total offense and say it was like they were done.
Speaker 6 (28:10):
There were two different games completely and right there, I
mean they dominated the first half and credit them for
having a great offensive game plan that allowed them to
possess the football. I want to say Georgia had six
total offensive plays in the first quarter, so it was
a dominant performance. But you got to finish the game.
And again, you got to be able to deal with adversity,
whether it's something that happens within your team or something
(28:31):
that happens with the officials.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
All Right, we got Georgia fans trying to get rid
of Billy Napier. We'll deal with that next time, all right, door,
We got to leave him one more, right, leave him
one and more.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
Hey, hey, we'll let you go on that note.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
Now.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
Our new friend Peter Burns, we said aloe also, by
the way, he was on last week and he said
we were friends now, but I don't know.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
If his ears.
Speaker 6 (28:50):
You don't want to be friends with that guy?
Speaker 2 (28:54):
Oh man? All right, bro, Well, we do want to
be your friend.
Speaker 6 (28:56):
Yeah, all right, I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
All right, brother, be good, keep up a good all right,
there you go, Chris Doring SEC Network. There's been tandem
to a man on SEC never they have fun with
each other.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
You can tell he got a good sense to humor. Mac.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
We have a new wheel here at Wheel of Names
dot com. There's fifty names of uh w FNZ employees, guests, texters,
and we're gonna use this from time to time when
we need something to decide something, when we need someone
to pep talk or whatever. We're gonna do it today
for who will sing Happy Birthday to me?
Speaker 2 (29:25):
At nine? This is hilarious.
Speaker 3 (29:27):
Bone is shamelessly setting up his own happy birthdays.
Speaker 4 (29:32):
You will have to contact these people and explain and
we'll see if anyone actually does it. Like Greg Olsen's
on the list, well, Kikle's on here. So it's gonna
be up to Fitti Mac to contact these people. Do
it for your birthday coming up in eleven days. Also,
so the fact that Fiddy's gonna have to reach out
to potentially Greg Golsen and say do you want to
sing Happy Birthday to Bone is funny to me. We're
(29:52):
gonna spin the wheel. Mac, You're on here, two machers.
Let's see here, I'd be who gets it here? Let's
see spin, spin, spin, spin, spin.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
The official spin or just a practice spin.
Speaker 4 (30:02):
This is the you want to just be the real spinner,
the practice spin, save the real spin for like, alright.
Speaker 3 (30:06):
This this, I guess you've got.
Speaker 2 (30:08):
To call city. Tell you who the practice spin landed on?
Who is who was it?
Speaker 3 (30:11):
Joe Person? Oh man, Joe Person in that voice to sing?
And that would that would really set your heart a
flutter on your forty second burn. We do the real spin?
They we'll do it next hour. Okay, but but fitty,
I guess we got to cancel our plans.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
Bone.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
We had it set up for Sidney Sweeney to call
in and sing happy Bird, So we'll just tell her
she can't.
Speaker 4 (30:27):
He's on here. We'll just tell you she can't do.
Problem is she changed your number because we had it.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
We had it set up, Bone, But apparently you want
to plan your own birthday song man, the chance to
make it.
Speaker 4 (30:36):
Sidney low at Sidney Sweeny when we come back, just
when we're starting to feel happy about the Panthers, here
comes those dat. Thirdly, Falcons big win in prime time.
They're being hyped up beyond belief. Are we buying that
the Falcons are actually this good Sports Radio ninety two
seven w f Z.
Speaker 2 (31:21):
All right, Joe Mac here to tell you. Oh no,
I'm not here to tell you an what's happening. I'm
a mess, you are. I'm doing a live spot.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
You are constantly moving product, and now you're doing it
on our own time.
Speaker 6 (31:33):
I do.
Speaker 3 (31:33):
I'm trying to move product in my sleep. I do
live readings in my sleep. That's all right, most man.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
By the way, if you're out there today want specials,
check out the New York Butcher Shop on Instagram and
why Butcher wine bar by Maze can sell too over here.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
I'm not here to tell you something. I'm here just
simply welcome you back to the Mac and Bone shell.
That is what I'm here. Recently back I did a
live reading. I sent it to break after the live read,
like I was going to commercial.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Well is it all right?
Speaker 3 (32:00):
This is these are these are co pilots that will
you know what I mean, get you in trouble. Let's
let's do this Falcons conversation. It's kind of annoying to
be having this conversation. It's our week. I mean, we're
the ones that have won three in a row. We
want to robust two in a row. We are undefeated,
a big three and zero at homebone And what happens
(32:20):
the Falcons of all damn teams, the one I hate
them most of all the damn teams in the division,
the team we dispatched of thirty to nothing. The Falcons
have this big marquee win on primetime. So what did
I hear and read all day yesterday is how good
the damn Atlanta Falcons are. And of course, bony they're
a game ahead of us in the standings even though
(32:42):
we shut their heih knees out so here it's so.
And then Tampa's five and one best in the NFC
despite all their injuries, So it kind of stinks. It's
like it should be time for people to salute our progress.
But there's two teams in our division at nationally are
getting a lot of talk. I'm not here to say
a damn thing about the Bucks. I honestly fear the
(33:04):
hell out of the Bucks because you look at the
amount of injuries they have and the fact they're five
and one, and the way Baker is playing when throwing
to his fifth and six wide receivers the other day,
bone like something special might be happening in Tampa if
they get the band back healthy, Like, I don't know
about that, so I'm not here to take them on.
What do you think though about the Falcons hype? You know,
(33:26):
I did not realize this. Not only is Bijon on
pace to potentially, you know, break the yards from scrimmage record,
he's having such a ridiculous season. We did a great
job against him, by the way, but they're first in
defense after all their defensive struggles over the years, and
they are second in offense. What do you think about
the Falcons hype?
Speaker 2 (33:46):
Man? Is it deserve? Is this? I think good?
Speaker 4 (33:48):
I think the offense probably is the defense. I don't
know if that'll sustain that way. I think it's largely real.
And part of that is because I don't want to
sit here and bad mouth the Falcons from a hey,
they're overrated or it's not real, because I want to
really buy into what that win means for the Panthers
(34:09):
to shut out that offense if they are truly that
good and the Panthers shut down that offense. What's that
say about the Panthers defense and how many strides they
have made from one year to the next. So I
don't know if they're going to finish that high in
both the offense to me. For the Falcons, though, I
would say it's probably more real than the defense is.
Could it be because of you Ran beach On is
(34:31):
just on another level?
Speaker 6 (34:32):
Right?
Speaker 3 (34:32):
Can you not say, though, that because they lost thirty
to nothing to us, we can question whether or not
they're really that good. I guess you could. I guess
you could take that round. That's what America is asking.
By the way, I have seen multiple people on Twitter.
We brought up our guy AC's tweet yesterday about our
text about this yes yesterday, but I've seen multiple media
(34:55):
members say, how the heck did they lose thirty nothing
to Carolina?
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Being environment you know, just caught them off dark.
Speaker 3 (35:01):
Clearly, Zach Robinson, it clearly was what do you think
Panther Fitty, If you're going to be the great Panther
fan that I think you're developing into, you're gonna hate
this annoying, freaking team from Atlanta. But some of the
stuff they're doing when they're not playing US is eye opening.
What do you think about them?
Speaker 2 (35:20):
Fit?
Speaker 7 (35:22):
Do I think they're as good as they're maybe being
talked about after the win over Buffalo? I don't think
they are. Do Are they as bad as maybe they've
looked in the loss to US?
Speaker 2 (35:33):
I don't think they are.
Speaker 7 (35:34):
They have the feel of a team that's gonna play
up to competition. There are three wins are significant at
Minnesota Tonight Football, at the command or Verse, the Commanders,
and then the Bills all Monday Night Football. It feels
like when they play in a big game, maybe they'll
show up, play to the occasion, but they'll play down
to their opponent, which is kind of what that franchise
has done over the history of his existence. So I
(35:57):
think they're kind of what I thought they were gonna
be a team that's gonna probably win six seven.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Oh really, no, more like eight nine, maybe ten games.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
Oh you just wanted to say six seven, man, shame.
I will say they are zero and two in the
South because I lost a Tampa week number one, and
if you count the scores, look at that divisional issue.
If you count the two games back, because of what
we did to them. It's fifty three to twenty in
their two division games. So they granted Tampa only Tampa only.
(36:28):
Beating them by three point has.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Nothing to do with Tampa, Like that's a good result
when you look at how well Tampa's played, that's a
good result.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
Though.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
I will say game sticks out like a sore thumb
and enjoy that. I like to play Tampa very well
usually anyway they do. Actually, they're two and two in
the division. Well they're two and two in the division. Yeah,
uh yeah, because you got to give them the two
wins against New Orleans. They got just We're just handing
every team but two wins against New Orleans, Oh got them?
Speaker 4 (36:55):
Got me?
Speaker 2 (36:56):
How's our backside walk, Saints?
Speaker 3 (36:58):
Here's let me ask you the question this way, bone
do you? Because coming into the season, this was one
of our talking points and somebody, some Falcons fan says
we're ubsessed with Atlanta. It's called a rivalry and we
beat your ass thirty to nothing. So pardon us if
when we hear you getting hyped, we say, hold on
a second, I'm old enough to remember Week three.
Speaker 2 (37:15):
You know what I mean. Pardon me if we say that.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
But like we do, hate you, but before the season, Bone,
this was one of you and I's big things. Is
like a sign of progress would be to pass them
and to finish second in the division. Even if Tampa
wins it for the fifth straight time, what if we
pass Atlanta? What if we put ourselves in that spot
where where the contender next year to Tampa? Do you
(37:38):
still think we finish ahead of Atlanta?
Speaker 4 (37:44):
Yes, I don't know why I went. I went that
was like my Matt rule Jerry Jones hybrid there. Yes,
I do because I was looking at their wins though,
because they've just beaten Washington and Buffalo back to back.
If you would have said in the beginning of the year, Hey,
and when to just beat Washington Buffalo back to back,
(38:05):
you say, wow, that's still of the best teams in
the league. Buffalo still is Washington. I think we're still
trying to figure out mag exactly who they are here.
Buffalo's got problems too. They're overrated. Af Man, that defense
fifteen year old TikTok User Today you're dropping in six
to seven AF back there.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
Look at Fit trying to lose that NK status that
Mac Junior gave him. He trying to approve he ain't
an Unkuh. Yeah, that's a great I think you could. Yeah,
I think you can question both Minnesota. How good is Minnesota?
Speaker 2 (38:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (38:36):
The Washington wins pretty notable I think because I think Washington,
when they get healthy, is going to be.
Speaker 4 (38:41):
But are they as good as we thought they were
going to be when we entered the season. Just a
little bit hit or miss right now because the nfcon
has been playing horrible Washington.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
The NFC is good not great there.
Speaker 7 (38:52):
I mean twelve teams in the in the conference are
at five hundred or better. There's not a great team
in this conference, which I think both well for Carolina
if they want to maybe backdoor their way into the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
Oh no, we did it because you know, maybe.
Speaker 7 (39:04):
Nine ten wins get you there. We know what I'm
interested in seeing, Mac. What's the national narrative going to
be of Carolina beats Buffalo? Because Atlanta beats Buffalo, They're
getting all this hype, all this praise. If Carolina beats Buffalo,
is it gonna be what's wrong with the Bills? McDermott
on the hot seat. Is there gonna be the praise
for Carolina? That game is a lot more winnable today
than we thought it was back in June, July or August.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
It is, mate, We got to focus on the Jets. Sorry,
most important game is the next game, fady. We got
to focus on Jets. And if you missed Atlanta in
primetime on Monday, don't worry. They're in primetime again this week,
is right. This would be their third time in six
games they've been in primetime.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
Who wants to watch that damn team in problem?
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Because it's Bijeon, man, It's Bjon, It's Bjon Maine.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
He is prettydamn good.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
Do you remember when Raheem Morris said he's the best
player in football? And we laughed? At least I did.
Now I wondering if I shouldn't be laughing.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
He's heard the rico dwell, but damn we played that
bad in check. We really do.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
We definitely need to not be looking ahead to Buffalo.
But I just want to mention this now, fellas. I
may have agreed uh to a bet with a listener
where if we beat Buffalo all three of us jump
through tables.
Speaker 2 (40:11):
I may I might have signed us up. Why DoD,
why are you sign us up for that? Can my table?
Be on fire. I don't know we're we allowed to
do that.
Speaker 3 (40:20):
Remember thought we had a problem with the whole Romo
Jersey where we could find a place.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
Think to yourself, Hey, let me check with the guys
before I put him through table.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
I thought everybody was in. Oh, you know, I'll do it, man,
I knew Fitty was in.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
Bone's body is very brittle, so I don't know if
to talk to thee room and put on some drink
that milk. I need waivers. I need to talk to
the powers that be. I need to talk to my
old He's to a table.
Speaker 3 (40:44):
Before Bone's gonna check with Mabel at the house see
if this is okay when
Speaker 4 (40:49):
We come back here on the Mac and Bone Show,
mid term grades for all the local college football teams
from Professor Mac and Professor Bone from ORed Sports Radio
ninety two seven WFNZ
