those boys in Winston playing some really good football. Did
it with de Sean Perty this week, has won three
games with Robbie Ashford at starting quarterback. They seem to
really be hitting their stride right now. They are four

and two out of the gate. And I will say this,
Bony he got raved. This is going to mean a
lot to him. He got great grades from us when
we did we did our midterm grading of the performances
in the Carolinas. He got an A from me. I
know that he is Jake Dickert, head coach of the
Demon Deacons at Wake Forest Coach. I'm sure this stuff

means a lot to you, probably not quite as much
as the wins. Congratulations, no on your success so far.
How you doing?

Wow? I really appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Sounds good to hear the Wake fights down down there
in Charlotte. Obviously on the bye we get everybody healthy,
off to a good start. Everything's feeling good up here
in Winston.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
This it feels like you guys are getting better too.
Like I remember watching the kennisall game and I mentioned
earlier in the show, like just think of you guys
then and you guys now, and heck, I mean I
don't want I don't want to get you in trouble, coach,
but it wouldn't for a call that I think most
people thought it was horrendous. You'd be father and one
with a rank win right now, Like you'll feel like

(01:38):
you guys have clearly improved. There's no doubt, right yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
And I think that's the biggest thing.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
It's from a coaching standpoint, especially in year one.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
And I said that this at my.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
Opening press conference. The best program builders maximize the moment.
You know, I have an obligation to the seniors and
our fans and our alumni to go out there and
put the best product down the field right now. And
our players are believing, they're bought in, they're really connected.
Our culture is great, and they show up to work
every day in this building with tons of energy and
wanting to be coached.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
And in today's landscape, you can do a lot with that.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
And I'm trusting our guys and our players and our
coaches to put a great plan together every week. And
you know, they're going out there and they're really believing,
and our guys come to work every day, So that's
what you're seeing. I think the product get better and
better every week.

Speaker 4 (02:25):
Coaching this landscape of college football, when you're new to
a job and trying to really establish yourself at a
new program, how important is it to have a quarterback
with the experience that Robbie Ashford has to help you
try to get things off the ground.

Speaker 3 (02:41):
Well, I think that's what everyone has to understand. I
mean I got here December twentieth. You know, it's like
getting into you know, the sixth and seventh rounds of
the draft. You know, the portal was already opened for
three weeks. We signed forty five new players, and when
Robbie kind of came across our desk, you know, we
knew we wanted to completely transform the quarterback position of
you know what's really been happening here at wake Forest.

(03:04):
We love dynamic guys that can run and pass. Obviously
explosive players with explosive trades, and that's what he really
brought to us, with tons of experience, so we knew
we could shape our offense to him. You know, this
isn't where you know this isn't what we're doing with
our ideal offense. But you know, it's players over plays,
and I.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Thought we've done a good job.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
And Robbie's playing to his strengths and he's going out
there and getting better every week. So there's a bunch
of guys like Robbie Ashfords that maybe you know, weren't
highly thought after that are just playing their tails off
and are really buying into the team concept.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
So coach, looking, you bring up when you got there,
you know, and how late it was in the transfer game,
and I'll bring up, you know, the turnover right like
you come in. It's a ton of new players you're
putting in new systems and stuff like that. I think
most of us are pretty damn surprise you're at four
and two, And honestly, I don't mean it. There's another

thing I shouldn't be bringing up to your coach, But
you were up about fourteen in the one game you
lost in seventeen and the other I mean, like we
don't go Max, I know, I'm sorry, coach.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Don't worry about my friend here, Christ sure.

Speaker 1 (04:09):
I mean this is a good thing, Like y'all could
easily be six and zero are you ahead of the
schedule that you had for yourself or did you see
the ability to play this well in your first six games?

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Well, I think at first, let's just talk about changing
the identity of what way.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
For us is.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
You know, we are a football school. This isn't some
country club place.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Guys.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
We brought a blue collar approach. We have tons of resources.
People are absolutely bought into what we're trying to do.
And you know, we just take it one game at
a time, if I'm being honest and proud of our team.
But it just starts with a mentality and a want
to and a change of what you're really telling yourself,
what you believe is possible.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
And I think that is what has.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Been really powerful within our team organization and has allowed
us to put ourselves in this type of position.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
You know, so now what do we want to do
with it? Everyone's patting us on the back.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
We just had a team meeting yesterday and you know,
I said, I you know, if we came here thinking,
you know, we're satisfied with oh Man being a good
cool college story, like look, oh wake Forest, We're satisfied
with that, you know, then we should just keep doing
the same things, or if we want to actually do
something with this opportunity, you know, we need to get
back to work. So success adversity is just as real

(05:23):
as failure. So we got to make sure we're handling
things right. Love where we're at, love what we're building.
The response from the recruits and the people in our
region have been fantastic, and so far as the goods
start to be a demon Deacon.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Coach, You've used the words culture and mentality while talking
to us. How much does the sean perties performance against
Oregon State represent that the culture and really that next
man up mentality with the way he performed.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Absolutely, and Deshaun has tons of talent, and I think
that's very obvious, and people forget he's still a nineteen
year old kid, you know that really at the University
of Charlotte, got thrown in there and did some really
good things and had highs and lows. But now he's
a polished passer, he's processing the game better. And to
have a backup quarterback come in and perform that way,
he was a credit to him in his mentality.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
He was obviously very disappointed.

Speaker 3 (06:16):
Not being the head guy, but he came out there
every week and supported Robbie and knew his opportunity would
come and he was going to take advantage of it.
And that's exactly what you saw there. And I think
that's a big, you know, kind of building block for
a mentality of the team with a guy, you know,
being ready, being a great locker room guy and then
going delivering what his number is called.

We have said a lot of nice things about him.
He probably thinks it's rat poison, no bone he brought you.
He probably doesn't want to focus on all the story.
Here's a lot of nice things about me, coach. I'm
also a Winston Salem guy. I'm sure my name comes
up a lot, probably in the in the city. Yeah,
maybe not, I don't know.

Or not or not.

Yeah, please don't tell coach about your friendship with Chris Paul.
You know, I would never do such a thing to
a guess. I just don't go there. Coach, what this
this current climate coach in college football? Like I think
I think maybe we on the outside would look at
it and say, man for you know, private school like
wakeh you know, competing in the NIL space, revenue sharing. Man,

(07:24):
it might be tough like the transfer portal, you know,
where you might get out bid and stuff like that,
or it might be tough. How do you view it?
Do you view it as like you know, it's it's
it's it makes your job harder, or do you view
it as a place where if you do it right,
you can do it really well in this modern era
of college football at Wake?

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Yeah, I think perspective is everything. You know, when we
came here, you know, you come from a place that
didn't have things, you know, and we have ten times
as much more, you know, revenue sharing, and then I
on all that stuff here. You know, I look at
it as a blessing and we can have polutely win
football games here, you know.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
And my hope is that you know the new.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Rules and the revenue share and we can get to
a real salary cap that we can go back to
you know, who's the best recruiters, who's the best developers,
who can identify talent.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
There's a lot of things.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Where you got to use the portal as a resource.
You can't always see it as a detriment. You got
to understand relationships still matter, and if you lose the
transformational pieces of our game, and you just go transactional,
that's when you're going to see teams and programs failing.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
So it still is about the education, right.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
It still does matter here and it always will and
that's going to change it set up for the rest
of your life. But we want people also that love
the game, and you can't hide that.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Football is not basketball, right.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
It demands so much out of you that you can't
hide when things get hard, right, And that's the people
that we are going to find and bring into our place,
and that's why we're going to create success here. And
that's from my position on down to the coaches, to
the players, to our ministry. You got to understand what
Wake is and what's going to make us successful and

(09:05):
not try to be something we're not. So we can
stick to our identity and we can create a new
one and build what we want to be in the future.
Because Wake has had success, and I think that's the
biggest thing people don't want to give enough credit for.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
It has been.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Hard to do, it's been hard to sustain, but we're
up for the challenge and that's kind of in our DNA.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Coach, I have a question about your in game focus
as a coach, because that NC State game, it was
a wild first half, including that food truck that caught
on fire that ESPN was covering heavily, and I noticed
while that thing was a blaze over there, you were
running down the sidelines and they keep focusing on the
truck and the smoke in the air, but you were
just focused on your team. Did you did you notice

(09:47):
something weird was going on in the air, like it's
smoky and there's a blaze, or did you were you
so focused on your team now you didn't really think that, hey,
things are burning around here.

Speaker 3 (09:58):
Well, at first, I thought, you know, every time we
or touchdowns, we send off firework, right, And I was
trying to get attention of our chiefest staff being like, hey,
we got to stop setting off these fireworks.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
They's smoke everywhere.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
And then someone finally told me, he's like, no, coach,
there's a truck on fire.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
So you know, that's that's all my focus was.

Speaker 3 (10:16):
And you know, I thought that was a good problem
because we're scoring touchdowns.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
But yeah, you gotta you gotta stay in the game.
You gotta have good energy, and it's gotta maintain your focus.

Speaker 4 (10:25):
You guys are going up and down the field, and
I'm seeing more of the guys trying to get the
fire and are controlling his on food truck over there.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
Your offense was on fire. The food truck was on fire.
There was a lot of fire going on. Well, coach,
as we say by you, hey, keep up the the
good work.

Speaker 4 (10:42):

how about our boys as the weeks have gone on here,
