Speaker 1 (00:14):
Doliday, Christmas. It's the best time of the year.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
That it is bur lives that it is. Sports Radio
ninety two seven wfn Z. The Young Guns here on
a Tuesday morning, filling in for macim Bone. We'll be
back with you Friday morning, bright and early day after Christmas.
We're on the air from six to ten am. We'll
talk about all the great gifts that we got. I know,
I've been really good this year, so I think I'm
(00:41):
getting the pretty big haul.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
We'll recap everybody's getting something this year.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
We'll recap the day in sports too, the NFL slate,
the NBA games. Yes, so, but we'll be here to
talk about it all with you guys on Friday morning.
Whenever we host this time of the year, we try
to get to talk some college basketball because the season
(01:06):
is seating up. In the last few times we've filled
in for Colin, we've wanted to talk coupes, but you know,
Bryce Young argument or something kind of got in the way.
So we're gonna do it now. I wanted to do
a Big Four check in. We'll talk about the Big
four teams from the acc into show that I'm not
(01:27):
biased and that I am a professional. We'll start with
the team I hate the most to Duke Blue Devils.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Interesting.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
You know, they suffered their first loss over the weekend.
They lose to Texas Tech. They blow a seventeen point
lead in the second half. Shout out to our guy
NASCAR Brad, who was at the game for his birthday.
I was somewhat hurting for him. He had to see
his team lose. But it's always fun with Washington.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
I was not.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
I was really happy that. Yeah. Yeah, same here.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
With that being said, though, I mean a lot of
big time wins, top three in the net. They they've
pretty much got a one seed resume going into the
startup of conference play. Do you think they've emerged as
the clear favorite to win the league and a league
that boasts, you know, a top fifteen Louisville team and
a UNC team that's off to their best starts in
(02:19):
two thousand and two thousand and nine.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
I would say, when you say clear favorite, does that
mean that no one challenges them?
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Because I don't think that's necessarily the case.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Do I think they are the favorite at this point
and everybody should have them as the favorite. Yes, because
of the schedule that they've played the teams that they've beaten.
I think they are one of the best teams in
the country. Now I no longer believe that I thought
that they were right there with Arizona.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
I think now.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
They're probably a little a little bit, you know, a
tier down from them. But I still do believe that
they are the team that's gonna win the ACC when
it's all said and done. And I mean, yeah, man,
I think for them, you know, it's that was a
tough loss to Texas Tech that certainly probably brought back
(03:12):
memories of last year for a lot of those fans,
But I think it's something that they will be able
to recover from. Biggest question for me when it comes
to that team is who is their second scorer, Who's
that secondary guy that really steps up for them, because they.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Don't have a Robin taboozers Batman.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
No, it doesn't seem like that, where the team down
the road from them has Caleb Wilson and Henry Vassar
who are having really successful years, and then you could
even throw Seth Trimble.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
In there, who we think is going to continue to thrive.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
I think, Duke, they've got some players that are playing well,
you know, Isaiah Evans has those moments, but in some
of these big games he sort of disappeared, so that
it kind of makes you wonder just a little bit
whether or not there there are some cracks that team
would be able to expose. But I still I find
it hard to believe you're saying anybody else is gonna
(04:05):
win the ACC at this point when you.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Mentioned you know what's different about the team down the road,
and you're right, Carolina's got a won two punch. They've
got the best, in my opinion, the best front court
in the country.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Yep. But this also is what's separate.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
What's different from Duke from last year was you had Flag,
the best player in college basketball. Then you had Conker Nipple,
who you know, when Flag got injured at the ACC tournament,
was the best player in Charlotte for three days. Was
which is why there was no no one thought Duke
was going to lose in the tournament last year, because
you had two legitimate players that could go off for
(04:39):
thirty on any given night. And I kind of brought
this up with Mac and Bone yesterday and it kind
of got dismissed, and Hono Field's off purpose or not.
But this this duke blowing big leads is kind of
a thing under Shire. Like you had the collapse last
year at home, or last year against Houston in the
Final four. You had the collapse if you will, against
(05:00):
State where I believe they were up eight points deep
in the second half and they ultimately lose that game
that was in the Elite eight, on the doorstep of
going to a Final four. So like it's kind of
become a theme for them. Well, this is part of
some of the the DNA that they they have, is
that they can build big leads and they blow them.
(05:22):
And you know what's surprising is is just the fact
that you for them to be as well coached as
they are, you'd think they'd be really better in these
late game situations. And it feels like when the game
is close, sometimes more often than not, they're making mistakes
as opposed to winning plays.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah, and I think part of it is that they
are so young. I do think that's one of the
reasons why you see a lot of those mistakes end
up happening. But it's, you know, something that they've got
to be able to find a way to get over.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
And I wonder if John Shire is going to.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Be able to do that this year with this group
because we can say, now you you asked the question
at one time, but we can say now, this is
not a more talented Duke team than last year.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Right, this is not a better team than last year.
I'm sorry.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
It doesn't matter how you look at it, and I'm
going to tell you right now they could win the title.
I still don't think they're better. They are a more
talented group overall than the one that.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
They had last year.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
That was the most talented group they may have ever had,
and they ended up falling short. So I mean, yeah,
that's one of those things that might be something that
I would be interesting to hear from a Duke fan
perspective as to what they think is behind those collapses.
But at the same time, the reason why I really
like them and in terms of to win the ACC
(06:43):
I think it's because of the depth that they have.
I mean, they're so deep, man, and that was something
we weren't used to under coach k K would really
shorten the bench and would use just a specific amount
of guys. This group, there's so many different guys that
they can throw at you that I think that's what's
going to make them difficult to play against through the
throughout the ACC and then of course once they get
(07:05):
into the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Let's talk about the better shade of blue. Let's talk
about Carolina big win last night over ECU, just in
terms of the result, ninety nine to fifty one over
a really bad ECU team. Thoughts and prayers to that coach,
that fan base as they navigate what's going to be
a really long season. But you know, Carolina's twelve to
one first twelve and one starts in two thousand and eight,
(07:27):
two thousand and nine, that seam, of course went on
to cut down the nets and win the national championship.
And I think Carolina is really putting themselves in that conversation.
The computers like them, you know, their top twelve and
the ap pole, top twenty in the net, their top
twenty five and ken Pom. The offense has to become
more efficient. But they looked really good and stretches against
(07:48):
Ohio State, they looked really good last night, shooting over
fifty percent from the field, nearly fifty percent from three.
You got tremble back, You've got the best front court.
Everyone believes in college basketball, KLi Wilson, Henry Veas as
they started calling him last night.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
I don't know how to pronounce his name. They saw
the sar. Those are the two that I kind of
go with.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I just call him big Henry. I think sometimes that's
a little bit easier. Yeah, or or you know, Colin
Hoggard light because they looked very similar there in the face.
The big talking point around this program was the hot
seat on Hubert Davis because we believed he entered this year.
Make or break was never definite because we didn't know
where the department stood on his job security. Has the
(08:31):
pressure eased off of Hubert after a hot start in
not con.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Yeah, I would say so.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
I mean, look, part of it is that you were
playing easier opponents. But the other thing is is that
you beat Kansas, you beat Kentucky, you beat Ohio State.
So you took care of the teams that you were
supposed to and then added a nice win over a
Kansas team that you know, maybe some people would look
at that and say, you're supposed to win.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
That was a toss up game early in the season.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
I mean that with Darren Peterson fully healthy in that game,
that was a legitimate TOSSO game. Like, if you told
me Carolina lost that game, I would not have been
shocked by that, especially with all the new guys that
had come in.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
That's the other thing.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
I think you got to credit Hubert Davis for getting
this group to come together as quickly as they did
and finding success in a guy like Caleb Wilson. Remember
everything that we'd heard, man Hubert doesn't know how to
coach freshman. This is you know, he's ruining these guys
when they're out there on the court.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Well, he's not ruining Caleb Wilson.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
I think Caleb Wilson is showing you that some of
those other guys that you brought in that were five
star talents maybe shouldn't have been five star talents. So
I think it's been a you know, tremendous start to
the season with the schedule that you had in front
of you. Of course you would love that game back
on Thanksgiving, especially if you had set Tremble at your disposal.
I think it would have been a much different game.
(09:49):
But that's not the worst thing in the world that
Carolina lost that game. They've reset since that moment, and
now we'll figure out what they are in conference. I
think they're in Tier two, where I thought coming into
the I thought they were probably in that second tier
as well, but I thought they were further away from
Duke and from Louisville. Now I think they're in the
(10:10):
same tier as Louisville because I don't know exactly how
good Louisville is, and I think they're They're closer to
Duke than they were at the start of the season.
So I mean, I'm expecting some big things from this
team in conference play.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Hopefully that's what shows up.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Let's get to tenn CEE State in wake Forest here
really quickly. State gets a big non conference win on
a neutral court on Sunday against Ole Miss to really
salvage the first non conference season under Will Wade. Remember,
they were the favorites to win MALLI in the worst
malle field ever.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
They didn't do that.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
They couldn't beat Kansas on their home court when Darren
Peterson missed what the final six minutes of regulation and
missed the entire overtime period. They beat a good Old
Miss team, not as good as the Rebels were a
year ago when they made to Sweet sixteen. What Peck
in danger missing the tournament and you're wononder Will Wade, I.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
Mean, they're gonna be right there on the bubble. I
mean trying to figure out what exactly they are is
one of the more confusing things because I mean, yeah,
they don't have a big win so far. I mean,
you look at where they are in the net. They're
thirty first. That's not bad. But I mean you look
at the Quad one opportunities, Quad one and Quad two.
They are a combined two and four. So it's not
(11:29):
a great start for them, but it's not horrible. You
got the win over VCU. You got to win over
a team in Boise State who somehow is still a
top fifty team in the net. That's one that I
don't know if you can count on that going throughout
the season. The one that hurts, and it's not as
damaging as it was early in the season, but Seedon
(11:50):
Hall definitely hurts because Seedon Hall is a good basketball team.
If you had found a way to win that game,
then you're feeling pretty good. The other one is Texas.
That's another one that I don't think that's I don't
think that's gonna be a tournament team. Maybe I'm wrong
on that, but that's that's another one. That's things that
Maui field was really advantageous for NC State, it felt like,
(12:12):
and unfortunately for them, it just never really came together.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
So I think there are going to be a team
that's on the bubble.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
If I had to say right now, do they make
the tournament or miss I think they'll make it because
I think they'll win enough games in the in the conference.
I think they'll play some of the top teams, you know,
a team or even not even the top teams, but
some of those teams in the middle of the ACC
like Clemson, I had another team you Virginia was the
(12:41):
other one. I would think those teams they got a
pretty decent chance to beat them. So if you beat
a few of those opponents, then I think you've got
a legitimate shot to make the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Yeah, it's just almost it's almost laughable that he grabbed
a microphone, so the reckoning was and then had an
underwhelming the first two months of the season.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
And that's the thing.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
Nobody would care if you didn't have that moment, if
you weren't calling Hubert Davis out and saying he doesn't
know how to use Van Allen Lubman. If you were
a guy that just came in and said, hey, I'm
expecting big things in my first year, and you just
said that in a press conference, it's nothing. Yeah, but
you come out after the NC Central game a team
(13:25):
that is not the former Leaval Moton Central teams, and
you come out and say the reckoning is coming. You're
celebrating this like this is some massive achievement. That's what
makes it satisfying to fans like us of other teams
to see these guys struggling.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
One comment on Steve Forbes and wake Forest. He was
in studio last week with Josh Graham to pay to
you know, pay tribute to him as he was this
time at WSJAS was coming to an end.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
His final show was yesterday, good show.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
And that's where Steve Forbes is working next year because
this time at wake Forest is coming to win end.
I don't see the Deacon, the Demon Deacons doing what
they got to do to get themselves into the into
tournament play.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
And that's why when they lost to.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Michigan the first week of the season, I said, hey,
you got to win that game, and you did it.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
And they had some other games along the way.
Speaker 3 (14:18):
And Oklahoma kills them and I could not believe how
bad Vandy beat them down. I mean, I get it, man,
Vandy's playing some good basketball. I thought I picked Wake
Forest to win that game. I thought, because of the
how Vandy had been playing, they were due for a
loss somewhere in.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
The non conference.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
And now, I mean that game wasn't even remotely close.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
They lost by what thirty The Commodores, you go off
of history.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
They're legit.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
They're a legitimate threat to win the national championship. And
I just hated for Steve forbes Man as a as
a balding man. I root for bald guys to be successful,
and he's He's done a good job there, but not
a good enough job I think to be the head
coach after this season. Sports Radio ninety two seven w
F and Z The young Guns in for macim Bone,
(15:07):
but we're treating the clock like it's the macim Bone Show.
When we come back, we'll put together our Christmas wish
list for every local team Panthers, Hornets, Hurricanes, and more.
You're listening to Sports Radio ninety two to seven w
F and Z.
Speaker 4 (15:23):
Serbbes sidewalks, busys sidewalks. Fast in the hot days, stop
in the there's a few Christmas.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
It felt like Christmas a few days ago when it
was seventeen degrees outside.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Not gonna feel too shorts. Why aren't you? Hey, yes,
you was. That's the Just think about us, Marlowe's we
don't we don't wear pants? You're stupid. Oh sorry, yep.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
I mean my uncle is over at the mansion yesterday
having some plumbing issues, and he was there.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Now, why don't you called flounder?
Speaker 3 (16:00):
I wait, wait, wait a second, wait a second, wait
a second.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
That's fair. That's that's fair.
Speaker 3 (16:06):
My my Uh no, no, rear having ass uh certainly
deserves that. But here's here's the thing. Your dad. There's
no way your dad wears shorts. Your dad has to
be that guy because I know this, because my father.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Is like this, need to bundle up or you're gonna
get sick.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
My dad, before he became a business owner, wore shorts
in the winter time. When my dad became a business
owner and started, you know, dealing with the the homeowners
and stuff, no he he wore pants and made What
was weird is that when I was a full time employee.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
I had to wear pants.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
I still work from my dad on the side because
it's it's in, it's in, it's in the DNA. I'm
gonna go pull wire. I'm gonna help the family business
out right. I show up in shorts, okay, So, but
my uncle yesterday shows up, this is a great image
and basketball shorts, a hoodie and work boots.
Speaker 1 (17:11):
Nice, that's a choice. And then you've got my.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
My uncle who shows up, who wears Jim shortz what
a hoodie with his diabetes compression socks all the way
up to his knees.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
And it doesn't that's uncle Bo't.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
It doesn't matter twenty seven or seventy seven us Marlow's
we're gonna we gonna wear some shorts.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
So be cause you don't believe, you know that the
thing that you can get sick from cold, that's not true.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
No, I've never believed in that. That's that's not actually true.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Now, if you are sick and you go outside, you
could get pneumonia. If you're like, hey, I'm just gonna
sit outside while I'm sick, that could that could harm you.
But I think for the most part, I don't think
the cold really does that.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
That's a that's a myth.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Yeah, But Strawpie's done a great job getting us ready
for the Christmas holiday.
Speaker 1 (18:04):
I'm ready to go. We got two more segments to go.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
We got a podcast to record that I'm making my
way up to the mountains for a few days. And
so we got one last kind of Christmas theme topic
here that we'll discuss before we get out of here.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
One to put.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Together a Christmas wish list for every local team, Panthers, Hornets,
will let Shoppe talk about the Hurricanes as well. It's
probably it's the hardest to put together something for the
Panthers because they've got two games left to go, and
there could be more.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
There could not be more.
Speaker 2 (18:38):
But if you were trying to put something on the
wish list for the Panthers going into this game against Seattle,
one more game against the Bucks, what would that item be.
Speaker 3 (18:46):
So this is the child that you know automatically loves
just about anything that you could get them. This is
the easiest gift that you can buy. You're buying a
playoff berth. That's what you're hoping for for the Panthers
is that they just make the playoffs. Now, if you
want to be greedy, they may have written down on
the list a playoff win, but you might say, you
(19:07):
know what, let's let's walk before you run here a
little bit. Just put down playoff birth. I think that's
ultimately what the Panthers are open for. Man, you make
it to the playoffs, that's an incredibly successful year. You
are ahead of schedule, and from there, whatever happens happens.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
So I think that's the easiest child to buy for.
It's the other.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
Ones that might be a little bit more difficult to
try to figure out exactly what to get them.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
Yeah, you know, I think you know, maybe you say
that's that's the easy present to pick out. I think
that's also probably one of the more expensive presence on
the list. Certainly, I will I will go a little
bit short sighted here with the Panthers. What I will
wish for is a pass rush that makes Sam Donald
see ghosts out there. I want him seeing the ghost
(19:54):
of Christmas past as we are out there being a
being the Grinch, being a screoge to Sam Darnold uh
and the Seahawks this weekend. We know he's not the
not the greatest in In late week, you know, performances and.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
Especially in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
Would love for us to handle business against two former
Panther quarterbacks in the bank back to back weeks. That
is my wishless item for the Panthers.
Speaker 1 (20:20):
B Bob.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
In typical b bop fashion, he writes, I wish for
a truly viable backup quarterback for the Panthers that can
provide competition and really start a controversy. I wish the
Hornets win the lottery. Well, the Hornets, I think they
wish they could win the lottery too.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
That you talk about expensive, that might be the most
expensive item you could possibly That's that's Hey, I want
a car.
Speaker 1 (20:44):
Yeah, because you gotta.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
I mean, you gotta give the NBA something in return
if you if you want to, if you want the
NBA to rig the lottery.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
The number one of the draft pick.
Speaker 2 (20:55):
The Bagel Guy writes in are we crazy to say
we would be disappointed if we don't make the play offs?
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Depends on how it looks, and I really, I really.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Want to say, yes, you would still be like, it's
still crazy to be disappointed. But when you've won the
games that you've won, like as many big games as
you've as you've won with Green Bay l A. Now
this game against against Tampa, I think they're going to
compete with Seattle think that game is is very winnable.
(21:25):
I think I think I think the yes, because I
still think the Highers have been higher than the Lows
have been low, and those and those two Saints loss,
those those two losses hurt, man, like it was like
gut check. It was like reality where it's like dang.
But it still doesn't take away the high you felt
when you won at Lambeau when no one gave you
(21:47):
a chance, when you beat the Rams with whether your
back seven either injured or suspended. So I don't know
if I would be disappointed, but I couldn't be upset
at other Panther fans if they're disappointed.
Speaker 4 (22:00):
I just hope because there's different types of disappointment. If
it's an angry disappointed, then no, I don't think you
should be that. If it's a sad disappointed.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Then yes.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
I think for the reasons that Fitty just laid out,
It's like, man, it was right there for you, It
was right there. But honestly, this is a if they
have delivered exactly what we asked for is Panthers fans
at the beginning of this season where be competitive and
be in the conversation late in the year, and if anything,
you can say that they've definitely overachieved because as of
right now in week sixteen sixteen, they're sitting in the
(22:34):
playoff picture. So I think if you told Panthers fans
at the beginning of the year, that's where we'd end up.
I think with the expectations we had going in, am
I going to be sad if we don't make the playoffs?
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Yes? I don't think I could be disappointed in this season. Though.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Now if you told someone that before the season, they
would ask you what are you smoking. I mean, most
people did not believe that this team was They thought
maybe eight to nine. But I think what most people
believed was that the Tampa was run away with this division,
especially how they started the season. You thought, man, Tampa
looks like a really good team. I mean, hell, we
were talking about them as maybe the best team in the.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
NFC Baker for a little bit.
Speaker 3 (23:12):
Yeah, and now you look at them and they are
just a train wreck. So I guess, to me, yeah,
there would be a little bit of disappointment if you
don't make it happen. But at the same time, like,
let's say you win this week and then for some
reason you fall against the Bucks and you miss out
on the playoffs. I mean, nine and eight. How can
you be that disappointed with that season? I mean that
(23:34):
is such a massive step in the right direction. And
what it sets up is for next year to be
the year that you make the playoffs and to win
win double do or not double digit games finished over
five hundred for the for back to back seasons for
the first time in franchise history. Like that's I think
(23:55):
you could still be satisfied with that. So yes, there
would be a little bit of disappointment. It'd be a
gift that you open from your parents and you're like, eh,
so you know this is this is no, no, no,
this is the team that I want. But this instead
of instead of a Jordan Branch shirt, that got you
a Champion Branch shirt. You're like, Eh, you know, it's okay,
(24:16):
it's my team. I'll wear it. But still it's not
something that I'm like super proud of that. I guess
that's how you look at it.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
Yeah, we've we've we've been there before.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
If there's one positive if you miss the playoffs, it's
that your your timeline doesn't get accelerated. Like, if you
make the playoffs this year, then there's legitimate like the
pressure next year is to probably make the playoffs in advance,
like whereas this year is, if you make the playoffs,
(24:46):
no matter what happens in the wildcard round, guaranteed it's
it's a success first time for a lot of these players,
they would have played in a playoff game. Whereas, you know,
if you make the playoffs this year, then the goal
next year would probably be you enter you ind imagine
as the favorites to win the division. But could you
maybe be a team that wins your division, that wins
a playoff game, And maybe they'd be ready for that.
(25:08):
Maybe maybe they would not be. But I think, you know,
we got to see how this thing ultimately plays out.
What's on the Hornets wish list and how much how
much are they asking for? Oh my gosh, they've they've
they've got they've got to be. They've got to be
like greedy Teddy right where I mean Teddy wants as
many gifts as possible, as many expensive gifts as possible
(25:32):
from as many people as possible. I don't think it's
really that much.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
You know what they're asking for, They have asked for
this for four consecutive years, Health elevance.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
Health. Can you just give us health?
Speaker 3 (25:45):
Because when they when these guys are on the floor together,
the stats show that they are a successful group. Now
they need to be a little bit better defensively, but
ultimately that's the thing that you're hoping for. I mean,
even last night, man, you didn't have Colin Sexton, he's
still out hurt. You don't have you Grant Williams, he's
coming back. Can you get to a point where you
(26:07):
just have everybody, you are fully loaded as a roster
and you can just take on these these teams in
the NBA and really figure out where you're at. That's
ultimately what you want if you're the Hornets, because if
you can, then you can figure out, Okay, is this
a core that is actually going to be successful here
or do we need to move on? Like everybody says
(26:29):
you need to move on, But at the same time,
there are stats that tell you no, you probably shouldn't
move on because when they're out there together, they're successful.
So that's that's what you would wish for if you're
the Hornets, Just give me a stretch of help so
I can figure out whether or not we are building
this thing the right way.
Speaker 1 (26:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (26:49):
I mean, it's really like the that's really the only
answer for the Hornets.
Speaker 3 (26:52):
I don't what else could you possibly want. I mean,
you got your star rookie, you got your guy. Everybody's like, well,
you need to get the number one over pick. You've
got a guy that's playing like he was the number
one overall pick. He's right there with Cooper flag Man.
He is putting up numbers that are similar to Cooper's
and there's a legitimate chance that he wins Rookie of
the Year. So, I mean, do you really want another
(27:16):
number one pick? Like?
Speaker 1 (27:18):
Oh, I mean, I guess you you would definitely take it.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
I mean, it wouldn't hurt adding a I mean, would
it hurt to add a Cameron Boozer and aj debantsa
Kayleb Wilson to this roster, to this corps?
Speaker 3 (27:28):
But I think the more the one of the more
important things that you got to figure out also is
do you have a coach? Do is Charles Lee the guy?
I think my main way to figure that out is
to be healthy and to actually win games. Might that
be my biggest question?
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Man?
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Like, I think what you've seen from Jeff Peterson, I
think one that he evaluates sound.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
Look at the rookies.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
He's made the savvy trade deals that Mitch Kupchek just
refused to make because they were a small market team,
even though those are the trades you have to make
because you are in fact a small market team. I mean, look,
it just it just it's just stuck in my in
my brain, like it's just ingrained there. When they got
beat by fifty, your head coach said, this happens in
(28:13):
this league, and that quite simply does not happen like
it happens to the Hornets because they were the only
team in the history LEAD to have back to back
loss or back to back losses of forty points or
more like, yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
We try to forget about those moments.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
So like like that's that's where I question it. And
it's like it's like Matt kind of brings up sometimes,
is he ever gonna show signs of stress discomfort on
the sidelines, Like it doesn't matter what's happening to his team.
He looks happy to be there, and it's like, you know,
you're we were while we were at home or in
the stands, not happy what at what we're watching. There's
(28:50):
something that he said about being that calming influence.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
I mean there's also something he said though about going
to fight for you guys. Yeah, I get it.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
But this is what his second full year, where this
is the midst of his second full year as a
head coach. I mean, I think that's just kind of
that he's a young coach that is still just basking
in the fact that he is a head coach at
the NBA level. I think that's part of what it is,
and I think eventually that would fade. My thing is
(29:19):
I like the fact that he is trying to stay
positive because it would be very easy to be incredibly
negative with this team and just say, man, things aren't
working out, we need new players, we need knew whatever
he did, he gets disgruntled and then it's just a
poor environment. I actually commend him for having that type
of attitude where the results have not been there.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
Uniform ned coming through to the defense of Champion T shirt,
he says Champion T shirts have a huge shoulder under
arm area made.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
For football shoulder uniform.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Ned Man Fanatic's white T shirts are the thinnest material
shirts I've ever bought.
Speaker 1 (29:55):
No more for me, shoppy, really good. That is fair.
That is fair. What is on your wish list for
the Hurricanes? Yeah? I have two, two simple things to
play the Panthers. No.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
Well, the first one is if you would stop having
back to back games we have a three goal lead
and then blowing it, that'd be That'd be fantastic. Yeah.
And then it's just health again for this team. They
dealt with it a lot with the defense early in
the year, and then right now Jacob Slavin's out again,
this time with an upper body injury. Brutal and also, yes,
(30:28):
Seth Jarvis out after being clearly tripped I think by
a Florida player in overtime.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
The rules don't matter for Florida players now, they don't.
They don't.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
So yeah, Paul Maurice, that guy gets away with a lot.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
Look at you go, oh yeah, for absolutely no reason.
Speaker 2 (30:48):
I mean, under the absolute glazing that guy gets on broadcasts.
But it means like Baker Baker Mayfield levels, he's a
great coach. Every time I watched the Florida Panthers play hockey,
which is when they play the Hurricane or when they're
in the Stanley Cup Final.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
That's all you see. Paul Maurice, that's all the talk about.
They want to point out how great he is.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
That's the reason that I don't like John Cooper either
in Tampa because they did the exact same thing to
him about how great of a coach he is.
Speaker 1 (31:14):
I mean, yeah, he's.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Also with the grump, but also with with Maurice, though
he had a lot of shine on him because he
was searching for that Stanley Cup for a long Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:23):
That is true.
Speaker 3 (31:23):
Used to be the Carolina Hurricanes head coach at one point.
So but no, you're right. Health is going to be
important for them. They've definitely got a lot of injuries.
Good news is still first place in the Metropolitan So uh,
the Metro has been just crazy this year. I mean,
there's a lot of teams that are really close together.
But when you're pacing that division, that's that's a good
(31:44):
sign for the Canes, especially with all the you know
issues they've had switching goaltenders and everything like that. Then
the other injuries that they've suffered, So I think they're
in a pretty good spot.
Speaker 1 (31:55):
Honestly, I think so too.
Speaker 4 (31:56):
And hey, yeah, you can only complain so much if
you're still in first place, if your vision so true true.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
All right, so there we go. We conducted our Christmas
wish list. Were all the local teams in the area, Panthers, Hornets, Hurricanes.
We were trying to get to Charlotte FC, but we
ran out of time. I'm sure Willie p Will have
you covered from three to six pm on that front.
Sports Radio ninety two seven wfn Z, it's the young
guns in for Mac and Bone. We've got one more segment,
(32:23):
one more segment to go right here on Sports Radio
ninety two seven w f and Z.
Speaker 4 (32:32):
Ooh, the weather outside is frightful, but the five is
so delightful since.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
We have no place to go. Let it snow, Let
it snow, Let it snow. It doesn't show signs of stopping.
Speaker 2 (32:49):
I brought one final segment here on a Tuesday, Sports
Radio ninety two to seven wfn Z, PD Finder and
Shoppy hanging out with you coming up next to Charlotte
Sports Today Today, Colin Hoggard and Shop. He will be
with you from ten to twelve from noon to three,
Mister West and Walkers Show, No Walker Mail. The Tall
Man is off somewhere for the Christmas holiday. Wes Bryant
(33:11):
will be here with Flounder, and I think Danielle Stein's
supposed to join them for a little bit during today's program.
And then from three to six it's Willie p And
for Kyle Bailey on the Kyle Bailey Show, Kyle making
his way up to New Hampshire. We hope his family
has some safe travels. And from six to seven its
Hornet Spree game. So a lot of live local programming
(33:33):
coming your way all day right here on Sports Radio
ninety two to seven wfn Z.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
Looking at the night in sports.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
The team we were just talking about last where we
went to break actually the last two teams actually the
Hurricane version of the Panthers and the Hurricanes they play tonight,
and the Hornets they're back in action at home against
the Wizards. So some local sports tonight as well. To
be keeping an ion, did you just say the Hurricane
version of the Panthers, Maybe, yeah, you mean say the
(34:05):
hockey version version.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
It's okay. I was just checking to make sure. Yeah,
I mean, look for.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
This sake, I made all day. It only took me
to nine to sure, Hey, look I got dumped. So
what does it matter?
Speaker 3 (34:22):
Well, that's yeah, I mean either way, it's I'm used
to getting dumped. That's that's how it works. Anthers Panthers, Canes.
Speaker 1 (34:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
I mean the thing is is that these two teams
are so far from fully stocked. I mean, Florida is
still dealing with a bunch of injuries. So are the Canes.
Uh so this should be you know, it's still a
pretty good matchup. I think this is, you know, again,
probably one of those measuring stick games for the Canes
to measure where exactly you're at.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
I would I would say that they have a chance
to certainly win this game tonight. I think where is it?
Is it at home for them? The road?
Speaker 1 (35:01):
One second?
Speaker 3 (35:01):
I mean regardless, I'll probably take the Canes regardless, but
certainly if they are at home, they are at home, Yeah,
I'll take them. And then the Hornets, Oh my gosh,
you gotta win against the Wizards.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
Man, right, the Wizards. There we go.
Speaker 3 (35:18):
If you lose to that team, you've got problems. You've
got major problems. I mean, would you put it past them?
Speaker 1 (35:26):
Though?
Speaker 3 (35:26):
Losing they lost absolutely, not absolutely, They've lost the Pelicans
and they also lost the Nets who stink, So it
would not shock me in the slightest.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
But come on, Hornets, get it done.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
I know it's the second night of a back to back,
but I'm gonna I'm gonna go with the Hornets to
pull out a victory against the Wizards, a team that
has been a thorn in their side at times during
some of these dismal seasons.
Speaker 2 (35:51):
You know what, I'll be monitoring tonight on Twitter because
he puts us up before he joins the pregame show.
Farmer gotta be dress for the occasion tonight, right, Oh
and he got the Christmas sweater right there they could
be wearing.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
They could be wearing the same sweater. Now is this
game at home or is this game on the road?
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Now, this game's at the this game's at the spec
as some people say.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
Okay, so Willy's probably gonna make the venture down there
after the pregame show, so I don't have to watch
the entire game with Willie here.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
Uh you should not and be thankful. Ah, I mean
I don't mind either way.
Speaker 3 (36:23):
I like the company, but uh yeah, this might be
one of those days. I mean, you know, got a
got a long day going here. I need to, you know,
be able to work my process to get the highlights
and everything like that. And I I know that he's
someone that gets really into watching the.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Game, So yeah, I don't know if he gets into
watching as much as he just gets into complaining like
he's doing.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
He's doing both. But I think he.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
Outside of myself, I've never seen someone so excited to
see his team struggle because I think I think his
hardest happiest when he's complaining about his teams.
Speaker 3 (36:59):
Oh yeah, one hundred percent, so uh and the and
it's it's worse than you, which is really saying.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
So because I'm I'm bad. Sunday the Tampa game was.
Speaker 2 (37:11):
It was an exercise having to go through that, you know,
with him, and and thank god we came out on
top because I can only imagine what he was going
to do. In the postgame show where he was he
went after Tampa fans too. He he said that Tampa
Bay people smell, and I just why, how do you
know what what what people people smell?
Speaker 4 (37:32):
Like?
Speaker 1 (37:32):
How do you know that? How do you know by
the way they're from Tampa.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
He said he went there for a wedding. Do you
literally just go are you from Tampa? Because you stink?
Speaker 2 (37:44):
And he said he went there for a wedding and
he said that the people there just smelled bad.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
What interesting before we wrap things up?
Speaker 4 (37:51):
Uh? Some some Pro Bowl stuff coming out as well?
Good or bad?
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Uh? Not great? Right now, just the wide receivers that
have been announced.
Speaker 4 (38:00):
The NFC, you have Pukinakua, George Pickens, Jackson Smith, and Jigba.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Amen Ross Saint Brown.
Speaker 4 (38:06):
For the AFC, you have Jamar Chase, Nico Collins, Z
Flowers and Courtland Sunon. Okay, well, I mean, did we
know we're waiting for the cornerbacks?
Speaker 3 (38:16):
I was gonna say, did we expect tim Ak to
be on there over those guys?
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Nombably not? And when j C was the leading vote
getter right for corners at.
Speaker 4 (38:25):
One point, I'm not sure exactly where he stacked up
by the end of it, But yeah, you know, I
think t MAC definitely still has a chance to win
the offensive.
Speaker 1 (38:33):
You know, Rookie of the Year he did.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
I think he reignited that case of the game he
had compared.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
To what you know.
Speaker 3 (38:41):
And the other key thing traveon Henderson getting hurt in
that game for the Patriots. That could reignite it as well,
because the only other one that I could see.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Because right in the NFL, do you just do offensive
It's not conferences for the entire league?
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Right, Yes, I believe, So, yes, we got to fix that.
You want to hand out more awards, Yeah, you seem
you seem like a guy that wants to hand out
less awards.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
No, I'm I'm a big gift giver, so I'm all
after your gift stuff to yourself. Well, I mean that's
that's the best way to get get in the mood
to start spending money.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
Yeah, I guess I want you to start spending money on yourself.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
Then can I say I bought a new pair of
shoes before I started buying all my Christmas gifts? So yeah,
that's that's a good point. Shop you get all your
shopping done. Yeah that's a lie.
Speaker 1 (39:30):
No, No, okay, well yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
Still remember he's still a little out of it because
he had to get up as early as.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
I have one stop to make on the way home
for something small. Okay, that's okay, But I am all
right like all the big stuff is out of the way,
so I.
Speaker 2 (39:45):
Can't say anything. I was going to stores yesterday. I
got to go to the store today. Now I'm doing
an airin for my my parents. But you know so
that I mean they even got all their Christmas shopping done.
Speaker 3 (39:58):
Well, I was gonna say that doesn't ca I mean,
you've got all your Christmas shob being done.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
You're just you know, nice, because I got the Christmas spirit. Guys,
Shoppy did a great job playing music. Panthers are in
first place.
Speaker 1 (40:11):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (40:12):
The Heels are going to compete to win an acc
inter national championship. I'm gonna have to be happy about
this Christmas season. First time in a while. It actually
is first time in a while. We want to thank
you for spending some time with us here on a
on a Tuesday morning, on Christmas Eve Eve, on Christmas

college football, college basketball, Hornets, Hurricanes, and of course the
Christmas holidays. We want to wish you and your family
and Merry Christmas a happy holiday season. We'll be back
with you guys first thing Friday morning at six a m.

seven WFNZ. Colin Hoggard, Aaron S. Troppi Shrupshire are coming
up next to Charlotte Sports Today on Sports Radio ninety
two seven wfn Z
