Speaker 1 (00:00):
We say a happy Tuesday evening to you all. Hope
you're doing well on this very chilly and already dark
Tuesday night. First Tuesday Night in December of twenty twenty five,
another edition of Mac Talk Driven. It's week fourteen in
the National Football League.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah again, it's Tuesday. You and I always look forward
to doing this every Tuesday. We really enjoy visiting with
the fans, having all the people call in and talk.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
We enjoy that, We enjoy.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Taking a look ahead to see what's happening in the
National Football League.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
And here we go again. Here we go again. So
for this week, the Titans head back onto the road.
There's two straight road games for the Titans.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
Up.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
First, it's a visit to Huntington bank Field formerly Cleveland
brown Stadiums in Cleveland, Ohio, to take on the Cleveland Browns.
Farm Bureau Health Plans starts at eleven on Sunday, then
kickoff at twelve noon with Taylor Zarzer and the man
of the hour coach Mac Dave McGinnis. Let's go back
to the phones and start off the way we always do.
Eric and Nashville, Hello, sir, good evening.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Hey guys, good evening. To y'all, and I just wanted
to say, I hope both of you guys had a very,
very great and happy Thanksgiving.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
We did, Eric, we.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
Oh, I did. It was wonderful. I spent was worth
about thirty forty relatives and the members and the like.
It just a good old time that I had, guys.
My question is not necessarily concern the times I was
at the game Sunday. It wasn't too three of the
before the saw it was kind of sad. It was
not a lot to sure about. But it actually has
to go with a little bit of last night's game, guys.
(01:33):
And of course I didn't know this had happened because
the Kurts NFL rule when Jackson dart of course of
going down sidelines and he got nailed out of the bounds,
well not nailed out of bounds, we got nailed in
the till to play and went out of bounce because
in the past you'd see that flag being thrown. But
I've heard that. I guess it changed the rule and
everything concerning that because I think one of the biggest
(01:54):
reasons it was changed because of passion my homes where
we danced out of the sidelines to get a few
more yours, and it was talk about I guess it
was now that they retired the players getting penlanzed where
the quarterbacks can go for a few yards and in
the in the field of play and get that extra
yardist which and that was unsay that the defense. Guys.
What was just basically the total explanation of that new rule.
(02:17):
I'm kind of glad to have it because I thought
it was unfair that the defensive players got penlased. Stuff. Like,
just wanted to get your thoughts on that and just
the explanation out of the rule and just how it
came up. Guys, y'all take care, we'll talk to you
against them and tightened up.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
All right, Eric, you tighten up. Thanks for the call, Thanks, Eric.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, Look, the quarterbacks have to be have to be
running out of bounds. They have to head out of bounds.
They can't tight rope the sideline. You know, as a
defensive coach would always say, if the quarterback is getting
cute on the sideline, blast him because he can't do it.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
He's got to run. He's got to be running out
of bounds.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
And just what you're saying, if he's trying to tight
rope that sideline to get extra yards looking for quarterback protection.
He's not going to get it. And you're right, he
got blasted last night. He can only take so many
of those hits, so he's got to learn not to
do that.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Well, yeah, he's already had some concussion issues in this
his rookie season, and has had some of those prior
to that. But yeah, if you pulled the ball down
and run, you are a target. You might want to
get moving.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, well then you get out of bounce. And the
quarterbacks deservedly, so they do get protection, but not when
they're a runner and not when they're trying to gain
extra yardage. Just by basically teasing the defense that they
can't touch them.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I'll piggyback off of what Eric said just a moment ago.
The other thing I found that was an instance last
night was the kick or the missed attempt from Yung
Way Ku, the New York Giants kicker. I'd forgotten that
first the ball started moving and so he stutter stepped
(03:53):
right there and then ended up looked like he hit
a driver into the dirt trying to hit it off
the t box. I had forgotten that they credit that
as a sack for lost yardage, and it's against the holder, right.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Yeah, yeah, Well because the holder again, when he recovers
the ball, he's got a chance to throw it back
behind the line of screamage. And so the ball was
never touched by the kicker's foot. He never touched it.
As you said, he dug a trench, you know, towards
it when he tried to double clutch that thing and
then stuck his right foot right into the ground and
dug up some turf with that. So, yes, it goes
(04:29):
as a sack.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
You just don't. You don't see that a lot, and
I had to I'm like, you know what, I didn't
to make a mental note of this in case it
ever happens while we're doing a game. I hope it
never does, but it's just one of those odd things
that's not super frequent.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Well, you and I were talking about that earlier today
when we're doing the rest of our work here in
the studio getting ready for the game this weekend. Joe
Nedney pulled his hamstring doing that when he was a
kicker for us here in practice. Yep, same thing, double
clutched on a ball that wasn't quite set down and
did the same thing.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
All right, So interesting kind of how everything shook out
in the world of college football as we approach conference
championships this weekend. We had rivalry Week last week, and
I know that did not go the way of what
any Valls fan wanted to do with with Vandy. I
(05:24):
think the interesting story that is emerging, and we'll see
if it takes place on National Signing Day tomorrow, is
that Jared Curtis, one of the Tennessee Titans Mister Football
Award winner finalists that place for national Christian School, the
quarterback has been reported to have moved off of Georgia
and commit to Vanderbilt, which would be a massive thing
(05:47):
for their program.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, well, we'll see how that done. That's official yet, yes,
so we'll see how that. We'll see how that fleshes
out and works out. But speaking about Vanderbilt, I mean,
you've got to give you know, the Clark Lee and
is is that whole group at Vanderbilt a lot of
credit for what they put together this year.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Absolutely, But conference championships that'll be interesting and then obviously
they will start to reveal the final college football playoff
poll while we're doing Titans countdown Sunday morning from Cleveland.
I'm interested to see how that shakes out. I think
we know how the first probably what nine to ten
teams work. It's just the last couple of spots. We'll
(06:26):
see when.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
It's consternation about that too, because I mean there's always
going to be debate whoever is thirteen, fourteen and fifteen,
you know, I mean there's going to be some debate
on that. There's always going to be You're not going
to make everybody happy. I think it's it's added a
lot of a lot of drama and a lot of
intrigue to the end of the season. Also with all
these playing games, I think it's some of it has
(06:48):
taken some of the luster off of the championship games.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
You know, for.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
They if they don't have any bearing on what the
tournament is, those that have a buried on the tournament,
clearly it's it even emphasizes it more. But the fact
that they're playing tournament football now in the Ncuba has
kept the interest of everybody in the country for a
long time.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Absolutely. Back to the phones we go six one five, seven, three, seven,
one four five, Hello David and lebnon how are you tonight?
Speaker 5 (07:17):
I am, well, how are you gentlemen?
Speaker 3 (07:19):
Doing good?
Speaker 1 (07:20):
David?
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Thanks for calling me this eving. Hope you're someplace where
you're stayed warm.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
I am in my car slinging in pieces.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Well, there you go.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
Turn the heater up, yes, sir, But man a knowledge.
This game has no playoff implications. It has no real
importance except to the two of the best defensive players
in the NFL. And I think whichever quarterback makes the
most mistakes running from either mister Simmons or I can't
(07:53):
even think of his name right now there, Yes, thank you.
I think that's going to come down to what the
game's going to turn out to be. Who makes the
most mistakes.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Well, you've got two premier defensive players, clearly, But the
game's important to all those players on the field and
to the coaches because I mean, basically what you're doing.
I mean it's important for their careers. You know, you
only get seventeen shots in this league, and whether you
are at this point in the game you're still in
the in a playoff hunt, that's still your your careers.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Are on the line.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
I mean, there's a lot of evaluation that is consistently
going on. So it may not, it may not have
playoff implications, but it's got a lot of implications for
everybody involved.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
It really does.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
And David touch Matt the thing that I'm so proud
of this team That've used so many rookies this year,
and it's going to do nothing but make the team
better in the years to come.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Well, the time on task is I keep saying all year,
this is this is one of the benefits of that.
This year is as painful as some of these games
have been, the time on task and the experience that
these rookies are getting it will pay dividends in the future.
Right now, though you're going through some growing pains with them,
you're one hundred percent.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
Right, guys, have a great night, all right, David.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
You two appreciate the call, and David will break down
the Cleveland Browns and kind of where they are right
now in the next segment, like we normally do. There's
a lot of similarities with the Titans and with the
Cleveland Browns and situations and certainly some statistical numbers. The
(09:28):
defense is ridiculous, And of course David's already concerned about
Miles Garrett, and rightly so. You're talking about a guy
that has nineteen quarterback sacks on the year, fifty seven pressures,
top five there, number one in the sacks, and if
he doesn't get injured with five games ago, should not
only break but shatter the NFL single sack record that
(09:51):
belongs to TJ. Watt and Michael Strahan at twenty two
and a half. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Well, well, to the point though, these last five games,
regardless of whether you're the playoff hunt or not, professionally,
means a lot to all of these players.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
And coaches a lot. Well, yeah, because you're playing for
your job in the place that you are maybe somewhere else,
maybe you know. I mean, there's always those scenarios.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
So nothing's given in the National Football League. I mean
you live basically week to week in the National Football League.
So you can't afford to say, just because we're not
in the playoff hunt, this game isn't important.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
That's that's not true.
Speaker 2 (10:27):
If that's if that's the attitude you have looking at it,
then you will be out.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Of the game. I want to take a minute and
give a shout out to a lot of the young
men who are playing a lot of these guys are
playing in the High School Championship Games in Chattanooga the
end of this week, and these are the finalists for
the Tennessee Titans Mister Football Awards Division one Class one

Caden Marrible, Battleground Academy, Chavar Young Web School of Knoxville,
Class three A and Division two Briggs Cherry Baylor School
(12:05):
that's in Chattanooga, David Gabriel George's Baylor School. And that's
the running back Mac that I keep talking to you about.
Who is a ridiculous Canadian kid, Tyreek King Knoxville Catholic
High School Kicker of the Year, Tommy Bacero Brentwood Academy,
Owen Maddox Notre Dame High School, and Mike Michael van
Pelt Gibbs High School, and those will be announced. The
(12:28):
winners will be next Tuesday, as a matter of fact,
December the ninth, at Nissan Stadium. And good luck to
them this weekend and good luck going forward.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Well, the high school football of the state of Tennessee
is just progressively gotting. I mean it's really gotten good
all the years that I've been here. Of course, I
love Friday night Lights, I love the high school, the
high school football. Big kudos to all of those guys,
but also everybody across the state. High school football in
this state all the way from west to east. Is
(12:59):
really really fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
It is, and knowing you're a Texan, I know how
big it is in Texas. It's interesting just to see
how big high school football is in so many states,
not just the South.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Yeah, but the importance that it takes on is really
I mean, it involves everybody. It not only involves the players,
but the coach. It involves the community. And that's what
I like. I used to do some work for my
TV thirty and just going to those ball games and
seeing the community support for all of these teams throughout
all those divisions that you just mentioned.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
It's pretty cool to watch it absolutely is. All right,
Coach Dave McGinnis r at Brian along with you, and
at the conclusion of this show at the top of
the hour, we will join live in progress the Tennessee
Volunteers the men's basketball team at JMA Wireless Arena at Syracuse,
New York, to take on the Orange. Currently eleven ten
(13:56):
Syracuse is the score eleven over Tennessee. Right now, that's
about eleven and a half minutes left in the first
half of that ballgame. Like I said, we'll join that
in progress at the top of the hour college football rankings.
Mac just came out. Let's go in ascending order here,
James Madison at twenty five, North Texas, Mean Green at
(14:18):
twenty four, the Iowa Hawkeyes at twenty three, Georgia Tech
at twenty two, Houston at twenty one, to Lane Green
Wave at twenty, Michigan at nineteen, Arizona at eighteen, Virginia
Cavaliers at seventeen, Southern Cal at sixteen, Utah at fifteen,
(14:38):
Vanderbilt Is at fourteen, Texas at thirteen, then your top
twelve University of Miami, followed by BYU at eleven, Notre
Dame at ten, Alabama at nine, Oklahoma at eight A,
and M Texas A and M at seven, Ole Miss
at six, Oregon five, Texas Tech four, Georgia three, Indiana two.
(15:01):
Ohio State number one. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Well, you know those ones at the top have pretty
much stayed there the whole year, right I think Ohio
State's the best team in the country right now, just
you know, for what they've shown and really what they've
shown since the national championship last year. They kind of
smoke through the tournament last year, and it doesn't look
like there's a whole lot that's in front of the
in front of them to stop them. Right now, those
(15:26):
last four, you say, those those ones from about twelve
to fifteen are the ones going to be interesting when
this thing is finally fleshed out, because everybody will have
an argument as to whether where they should be in
or why they shouldn't be in. That's where the argument's
going to come. But once this thing is set, it's
going to be pretty interesting to watch for the next month.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
Big ten Championship game Ohio State Indiana. Indiana have any
real chance at that, Well, they're the only ones playing
in I mean obviously, so yeah, the only ones playing
They're the only ones playing in it.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
But the thing about those two playing each other, they
have no burying on who's in the tournament.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
They're both in the tournament, all right. Week fourteen in
the National Football League is ahead for the Titans and
they travel to Huntington Bank Field this Sunday, Cleveland, Ohio,
near the shores of Lake Erie. We're on the air
here on the Zone at nine with the lead Company
countdown to kickoff. Then Farm Bureau Health Plans Titans count
(16:25):
down at eleven. Kickoff officially set for twelve oh two
with TZ and MAC, and we hope you will all
join us for that. They absolutely are. The Cleveland Browns
are the next opponent MAC. They are currently three and nine,
fourth place in the AFC North, first time the Titans
have been there in a couple of years. I want
(16:46):
to get to the offense first, because we kind of
peel through this. Obviously, Shador Sanders will get his next start.
I think it's his third consecutive start, and he's the
third different quarterback to play for them. But I'd like
to outline the issues of their aging offensive line that
they're having. Let's start with right tackle Jack Conklin suvered
(17:08):
his second concussion of the season last week against the Niners.
Right guard Wyatt Teller has a calf injury that's expected
to keep him out this week. Taylor was splitting reps
with Tevin Jenkins, who will more than likely become the
starter this week. He's a fifth year man out of
Oklahoma State and was a draft pick of the Chicago
(17:31):
Bears prior. Kat Leviston, a twenty twenty four to seventh
round pick of the Rams who they traded for back
in August, may be the guy to work there. On
that side of the line to go with Tevin Jenkins
if Jack Conklin can't go. They also have a veteran
swing man, Cornelius Lucas. He's I think thirty four years old,
(17:54):
but they've started seven different offensive line combos over the
first seven games of the season. They traded for Cam
Robinson at the end of September. He's settled them and
he seems to have done okay at that left tackle spot.
I say that with Shadur's latest start, he averaged three
point thirty seven seconds time to throw in that second
(18:14):
start last week again San Francisco, the longest time to
throw by a Browns quarterback in over the last three
seasons for them, Might this be a place for Jeffrey
Simmons and company to exploit?
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Well, the fact is, I mean, regardless of who they
have have playing up there, I mean, the Titans have
got to take care of the Titans. I mean that
has to happen at this time of year, you know,
especially once injuries start hitting the team, and especially if
you don't have a lot of depth. We've experienced that
firsthand here and that's what they're experiencing there.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
But you don't go in.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
I mean, I've I've spent a lot of time on
this film, on this tape like I always do, like
like we always do, getting ready for getting ready for
a broadcast. And when you look at it, you can
you can see good and bad play. I don't think
Conchland's going to be able to play, you know, in
this in this ball game. And he's been pretty good
since he's been there.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
Right, and it's his second concussion of the season.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
And so but be that as it may, you still
have to make things happen, regardless of who you're playing,
of who you're playing against. And you know, with a
with a with a young quarterback back there holding that
ball for three point three seven seconds that it was
kind of his mo o coming out of Colorado. I'm
sure that they are working on that to get the
ball out of his hands quicker. But when you go
(19:34):
up there, and especially when you go to Cleveland at
this time of year. I've taken several teams into Cleveland
late at this time of year, you've got to be
able to battle the elements also, so all of those
things are going to come into play rent.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
So offensively, Jerry Judy had ninety catches for twelve hundred
and twenty nine yards. Last year, he only has thirty
five for four to twenty one through twelve games. And
the reason for that, for a good part of it
is the Browns have run twelve personnel over forty four
percent of their offensive snaps this season. That's the highest
in the NFL, third highest rate in a single season
(20:07):
in the last decade. And of course, twelve personnel is
one back, two tights, two tight ends, and so you
can see that with some of these numbers. David and Joku.
There a long time veteran thirty two catches two hundred
and ninety two yards three scores, but the leading receiver
is tight end Harold Fan and Junior, the rookie from
Bowling Green fifty one catches five hundred and five yards
(20:27):
three scores, basically ten yards catch.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Yeah, with twelve personnel, they can split those two guys out.
So that's gonna be the matchup that the defense is
gonna have to be able to play against. But you're right,
both of those tight ends have have become big, big targets,
and with a young quarterback, your tight ends are one
of their closest, you know, to the quarterback. They're the
easiest throws, the easiest routes. They also run the football
(20:52):
very very well. I know you're going to get to
their running game, but there's the reason that they're mainly
twelve personnel because those guys are better players than the
third and fourth receivers.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Yeah, ninety eight and a half yards per game as
a team, and it's led by a couple of rookies.
And you know, they've been trying to find a way
to improve their run game week over week, much like
the Titans are doing. But the first guy in that
is the second round pick in quin Shawn Judkins from
Ohio State seven hundred and fifty eight yards, seven touchdowns.
(21:24):
Doesn't use him as much out of the backfield seventeen catches.
The other one is University of Tennessee running back Dylan
Sampson a little over one hundred yards, not nearly as
many carries in this, But those two guys are are
who they operate out of. Quin Shawn Judkins being the
main back, Yeah, he's the main.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
He's their main He's the main guy that they're trying
to get the ball to. They want to run the football,
I mean, that's part of it. They want to run
the football and run play action to those tight ends
and split out one or both of those tight ends
in different sets when you watch when you watch the tape.
So that's what the defense is going to have to
cont trade on.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
All Right, we're going to talk about the Cleveland Browns
defense here in just a second, and I'll outline it
with this. First of all, team wise, they're even in
turnover ratio. That's tied for fifteenth in the league. So
they're there, i'd say largely in part due to this defense,
which I'm looking at one, two, three, four, five, six, seven,
(22:21):
eight different categories. They are top ten in defensively, and
many of those they're top five. They're number one in
the NFL in run defense efficiency, allowing just three point
seven yards per carry, number three in yards per play.
You can start going through the list, but when you
talk about this defense, Mack, you lead with number ninety five,
(22:43):
and that is Miles Garrett, who is just on an
absolute tear career year. Yeah, I mean he is.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
He's on a disruptive path right now as far as
pressure on the quarterback. But the defense starts, it's been
it's been really good ever since Jim Schwartz has been there.
They run a four to three defense. I worked with
Jim Schwartz for a lot of years here at the
Titans when we had some really really good defenses. He's
as good a game planning the coordinators I've ever worked with,
(23:10):
and he understands how to get matchups with his people.
He's also very, very good during the ballgame of being
able to adjust to what's going on on the other
side of the football. So I give Jim Schwartz a
whole lot of credit with what's going on there. But
he's got several players that are really just premier players
at their position, But Miles Garrett is the one that
(23:32):
stands up over and above all the rest of them.
And then the Sweeshinger, the rookie middle linebacker, is also
a really really good, really really good player. But I
just think in totality, I mean, when I turn on
the tape, I can recognize that Jim Schwartz defense because
they do a lot of things, give your offense a
lot of different looks, and they're very, very fundamentally sound.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
Yeah. Carson Schwessinger, the rookie from UCLA ninety nine tackles
on the year there and then back third of the
defense has lots of top picks, you know, Grant delp At,
Denzel Ward, Tyson Campbell they traded for from Jacksonville. Ronnie
Hickman is the other safety, and so here they go
with that. Now, Malik Collins, one of the d tackles
(24:17):
inside quad injury for him, he placed it. They placed
him on injured reserve either yesterday or today, so he
will miss the rest of the season. He's had a
very good year alongside Miles Geared. I think, really good year.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
I mean, that's that's that's a pretty important piece that
that defense will be missing now for four weeks.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
All right, So how do you keep ninety five away
from the door?
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Well, you got to You got to know where he is,
who he is. I mean, it's easy to look on
the tape and find that out. But the main thing
you've got to do is we keep talking about you
can't get in third and double digits because that's just
asking for trouble. Yeah, you get into third and pass
against these people, You've got a problem You've got to
keep You got to keep them in a fifty to
fifty strut. Guessing is whether it's going to be run
or passed, because if they get it, especially with the
(25:04):
type of streak that he's on right now, if he
can just if he can just line up and get
in that track stance and come after you, whether he's
coming after you an I'll see.
Speaker 1 (25:12):
I expect to see him some.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
On the inside too, now with with Collins out of there,
especially if it's if it's third and third and a half,
have to pass, have to throw, So you've got to
stay out of those situations. And then for you not,
you've got to try not to single block him as
many times as possible.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
And to your point, I mean he's capable of lining
up anywhere along that.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Front, and he has and Schwartz is really good some way.
He used Albert Hainsworth when he had Albert, he'll he'd
line him up anywhere for personnel matchup. So that's what
you need to expect.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
And with the weather being a factor in this, because
we'll see how much snow is involved. I mean it's
right beside the lake and those things happened, it is
going to be cold. Uh So run game is obviously
the key for both of these football teams, and obviously
Tennessee wants to get it rolling.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
Yeah, well, the weather's going to be the weather is
going to be a factor. I've taken a lot of
teams in my coaching career up to Cleveland at the
old stadium, you know, the mistake by the Lake, and
then also now this new one, this new one by
the Lake. It's cold up there at this time of year,
when it's wet. Uh, that's gonna be that's gonna be
a challenge in itself.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
I did a school show today at Harding Academy with
Taj Spears and with James Proche. Of course pro Sche
spent two years in Cleveland. Correct. I said, you're looking
forward to going back to Cleveland being facetious? He goes, yeah, real,
looking real forward to that. He said, I don't miss
that weather at all.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
You know, that can get that can get as they say,
raw up there this time of year.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
Yeah, because that wind comes off Lake Erie and just
kind of whips around that stadium. Of course, now they're
going to have a new indoor stadium at I forget
where the suburb it's in there in Cleveland, but they're
in the works of trying to put that together. So
that'll be interesting to see. So Uh. When we come back,
we will wrap up Mac Talk, and in that final segment,
(26:57):
we will look through the week fourteen schedule of the
National Football League games and we will get coach Max
Keys and we'll just poke around that last segment and
see what's up before we hand it off to Mike
Keith and Crewe on the Ball Network for Tennessee playing
Syracuse in Syracuse, New York, Brett Bryan, and the head
(27:20):
coach of Titans Radio, Dave McGinnis, before we turn it
over in progress to the Tennessee Volunteers men's basketball team
at GMA Wireless Arena in Syracuse, New York to take
on the Orange. Currently a timeout in that game. It
is a little over three minutes, three and a half
minutes left in the first half. Syracuse Leeds Tennessee twenty five,
(27:40):
twenty three. Like I said, we will join that in
progress in the second half when we get done here
in a few minutes. Meanwhile, Joseph Bonano behind the glass
always does an excellent job and notified me that Jared Curtis,
the five star quarterback prospect and quarterback of Nashville Christian School,
did post just a few moments ago that He is
(28:02):
disappointed that the word got out before he could say anything,
but the last line says it all. I am keeping
my anchor down in Nashville. He has flipped from Georgia
to the Vanderbilt Commodore. So that's big news. I mean,
it really is. It's big news.
Speaker 2 (28:16):
And I think it's I mean, that's that's just kind
of an indication of where Vanderbilt's program is right now.
It's just a continuation of this year that they've that
they've been having. To me, I mean, you can't give
Clark Lee and everything that's going on there Vanderbilt enough
(28:37):
credit for what they've done with that football program.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
I mean that's impressive. Yeah, I think the credit starts
at the top with Candice story Lee, no doubt, the
athletic director there, who has just done a crazy good job,
and the reinfusion of the athletics department, not just in football,
(29:00):
a whole lot of stuff.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
No, They've got they they've they've they've made a real
commitment there at Vanderbilt.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
And it was it was it was impressive to watch.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
And the other thing about it is is, I mean
I don't think a lot of people believed it for
a long time, but on the on the field this
year they proved it.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
They did. This is where nil and the transfer portal.
This is a prime example in our own backyard of
how it is leveling and evening out the college football athletics.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Part of this well, and the part of that and
the part of the nil though in the transfer portal
is you still got to be able to evaluate talent. Yep,
You've got to evaluate talent. It's just now like it's
in professional football. You have to evaluate talent. But also
asset allocation is a huge, huge thing, and there are
some schools right now across the country that have mastered
it better than others. Indiana is a great example of it,
(29:53):
you better believe Texas Tech is a great example of it,
and Vanderbilt Commodores are a great example of it right now.
Speaker 1 (30:01):
I think the other thing is that you can point
to is this is also the Diego Pavia effect, because
I mean, he has as polarizing as he might be
to some people, he has been a crazy beacon for
that program.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Well, I mean, and he's played well well, sure, I
mean you have to do it on the field.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
You can.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
You can talk about it all you want to do.
But they've they've they've put their actions you know, where
their words were, and it's been it's been impressive to watch.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
And after the season that he's put together, I would
not be surprised to hear his name as one of
the names that gets invited to New York for the
Heisman Trophy ceremony here in a few days. Well.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
I mean to me that the Heisman thing is a
is a hard thing to try to put your finger on.
But I'm with you, Rett, I really believe that he's
he deserves at least a trip to New York.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
I don't know whether he wins it, but I think
he I think he's sitting in the room.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
I think he deserves a trip to New York.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
I really do.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
I think that's the I think that's the position that
he's put himself in, and he's brought his football team
along with him.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
All Right. So last week Turkey Day triple Header, Black
Friday Game, and then the rest of the slate throughout
the weekend and a lot of good stuff throughout there.
I mean, the New England Patriots continued their streak of
one are the ten straight wins I think, and Denver
Broncos reeled off another one. They're rolling right along. I
(31:33):
think one of the bigger surprises, and it's just one
of those any given Sunday kind of things, is the
Carolina Panthers in the Los Angeles Rams. Carolina got it
over on them.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Well, look, it's the National Football League, and if you
don't bring your if you don't bring at least your
a game to every ball game, you got a chance
to to get over on. Because all these players are professionals,
so they really are. You may have some that are
not having as good a year as others. I mean
they clearly, I mean they delineate themselves else as you
work through a seventeen week season. But if you ever
(32:03):
take the field in the National Football League, I've learned
this after my thirty nine years in this league. You
ever take the field assuming something that's gonna happen, you're
in trouble.
Speaker 1 (32:15):
Yeah, they get paid two. That's the bottom line. Right.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
Well, then there's I mean, this is a select few
of people that are on these thirty two teams.
Speaker 1 (32:23):
Yep. Uh. Starting out Week fourteen, Dallas is at Ford
Field to take on the Lions on Thursday night football.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Okay, you gotta like what the Dallas Cowboys are doing
right now. They seem to be very very well.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
And we said it last week, George Pickens, that trade
they made for him, that's worked out pretty good.
Speaker 2 (32:45):
Yeah, and he's he's look, he's always had that type
of ability he has.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
And I'll tell you the other thing that has really
helped them is acquiring Javonte Williams, who you know, had
a devastating knee injury in Denver couple years ago, and
he he looks really good. He has really helped that
thing out well.
Speaker 2 (33:05):
But when you've got Pickings, you got you've got CD
Lamb and you got the quarterback Gin and like he's Gin,
you got.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
A chance, Yeah you do. Uh. Sunday starts the noon slate.
Uh Seattle is at Atlanta to take on the Falcons
Pittsburgh at Baltimore in a battle of the AFC North.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Yea, Pittsburgh's been taking it on the chin lately and
uh so and to me, and of course Baltimore. Baltimore
has been up and down.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
This say they dropped one after sliding through five straight.
You know, they've they've they've they've they've taken it.
Speaker 2 (33:38):
They've taken it an up and down roller coaster ride
this year. I think all of Baltimore depends on how
this quarterback plays.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
That's the whole thing. I think you're right. Uh Cincinnati
travels to uh Buffalo to take on the Bills on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
Yeah, well, and and and Buffalo is another team there's
been kind of teetering on the edge of are they
good or are.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
They just very very average? And we saw Joe Burrow
come back and thump around. Yeah, this is a big
game as it pertains to the AFC South Division. Indianapolis
is at Jacksonville on the Jaguars.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
Look, we know what Indianapolis was early in the season.
They've kind of tailed off a little bit. We've just
experienced Jacksonville. If Jacksonville plays, if Jacksonville doesn't beat themselves
with turnovers, they're hard to beat.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
And here's Houston nipping at their heels. Both of those teams.
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Yeah, well, you know, to me, as long as as
Houston's defense stays intact.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
Being going to be in this thing being goo exactly. Washington,
who's had a disappointing year, takes on the Minnesota Vikings.
Speaker 2 (34:47):
Well, they've had their quarterbacks hurt. But the other team
that's that's hurting right now is Minnesota. Minnesota came into
the thing with some high expectations and all of a sudden,
it doesn't look so great up there.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
So that's gonna be interesting to Miami is at New
York to take on the Jets. The Saints are in
Tampa to take on the Buccaneers. The Denver Broncos in
a battle of the AFC West head to Reliant what
is it Reliant Allegiance Stadium sorry, in Las Vegas to
take on the Raiders three zero five kick, and they're rolling. No,
(35:18):
the Denver's rolling.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
I mean they're playing really good defense right now.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
They were from the start of the year. They still
are Rams, trying to get back in the win column.
They are at the House to Coach Mack Built in
Arizona to take on the Cardinals three twenty five.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
Yeah, the Rams have got have got too good a
team and they've got too good a quarterback to be
able to hit a two week skid.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
I think I would tend to agree with that. Now
here's maybe the marquee matchup in the NFC is the
three to twenty five kick Sunday afternoon Chicago, who is
on a heater at Lambeau to take on the Green
Bay Packers.
Speaker 2 (35:59):
Well, I experienced at the rivalry which goes back forever
and ever, the oldest rivalry in the.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
National Football League. I experienced that for ten years. I
believe me.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
It's real and it's a it's a real thing because
those two teams have longer history than anybody else in
the league. And you're right right now Chicago is playing really,
really good, solid football.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
Yeah. The thing with them that is impressive to me
because I think the one Ninky realed all five in
a row. Caleb Williams has done a very nice job.
But they can run the you know what out of
the football. The rookie Kyle manong guy to go with,
was it Devin Singletary the other back they do, they're
doing very well. And then they just seem to be
playing pretty good, complimentary football.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Well, they're playing back to there. You know, look all
those years, does that the Bears. The one thing that
you always knew on any given Sunday that the Bears play,
they're going to be physical. They're playing a physical brand
of football right now in Chicago.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
How about Sunday night at Arrowhead, Houston takes on Kansas City.
Speaker 2 (36:57):
Yeah, this is this is getting close to must win
game for Kansas City.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Ye.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
And it's also for Houston too because you just mentioned
you know, Indianapolis and Jacksonville. I mean, the AFC South
has got three teams right at the top.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
So this is a big, big game. You know what
else is a big game is Monday Night the Philadelphia Eagles,
who are reeling at so far, to take on the
Los Angeles Chargers on Monday Night football. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
And I have a hard time figuring out why the
Eagles are reeling because they still got a really really
good roster.
Speaker 1 (37:27):
Yes they do. Yeah, I'm not sure what the deal
is there? All right, Before Tennessee heads to Cleveland this
weekend to take on the Browns at Huntington Bank Field.
What the Titans have to do? Mac, what's the keys?
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Well, you can't beat yourself against this football team. As
we mentioned earlier in this program, they're very especially defensively.
Cleveland's a very sound football team. You're gonna have to
earn everything you get from them. And just because of
the extreme extreme pressure they can bring on the quarterback,
especially with Miles Garrett you cannot afford three and outs,
(38:01):
and you can't afford third and double digit against these people.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
You just cannot do it.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
And offensively, you've got to be able to string some
series together, I mean, because if you keep turning the
ball back over to them and you lose field position metrics,
you got a problem. If you've got to just if
you've got to, especially in that weather, if you have
to snap it and throw it every time, not only
with the heat that they can put on you, but
with the problems that you're going to have on the
(38:27):
offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
So there's Mac. You'll hear him with Tator Zarzer on Sunday.
That's an officially a twelve OHO two kick from Huntington
Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio. We're on the air at
eleven with Farm Bureau Health Plans. Titans Countdown coverage begins
at nine with the lead company countdown to kickoff. Excellent
work behind the glass tonight producing Mac talk the great
calls that we had and we'll get ready to talk
(38:51):
to you this Sunday from Cleveland, Ohio. Titans and Browns
in week fourteen. Right now, it's halftime Syracuse Leeds the
Tennessee Volunteers three thirty, two thirty and when we finish
right here, we're going to put you in progress. Second
half Mike Keith and the VALL Network talking about Tennessee
and Syracuse from JMA Wireless Arena in Syracuse nor New
(39:14):
York that is on the VALL Network and on your
home for the Titans in the Balls one oh four
five The Zone
