Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kind of a dreary, drizzly Tuesday evening. I hope you're
making your way home or wherever you're going this evening
as we welcome you into Mac Talk Mac. It's week
nine already in the National Football League. The Titans host
the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Here we go, Yeah, here we go, Here we go.
Just got got back from Indy. Now, well we'll keep
we'll keep pushing forward. I mean, there's a lot to
a lot to talk about. Appreciate everybody listening.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Uh. I'm just like you read. I get a lot
of calls during the week.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
I'm glad to talk to all of the all all
the listers, all the fans. I'm out in the public
a lot, so I get to see the fans, talk
to them, understand the you know, their disappointment.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
But I'm always here to talk to him.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
That's right, and we're going to do that right now.
At six point five seven three seven one four five.

Speaker 5 (00:53):
Eric in Nashville, Hello to you.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Hey guys. First of all, I just want to look
forward to the Titans being home for the month of November.
We won't have a road game to the first Sunday
December it's gonna feel a little bit weird to have
four in a row at home, but I'm excited to
look forward to it and hopefully during that stretch, can guys.
I know one of the things you guys, of course,

(01:16):
and I'm believe that you do. Later you're gonna talk
about the Roger McCarry's trade to the Rams. But one
thing I wanted to talk about, guys. This is actually
nothing to do with the Titans, but this is a
big issue, uh in the NFL. And that's of course
the controversial of the Tush push. Because we saw the
game Sunday where the Eagles played the Giants, and I
guess it was like jayalen Hurst is going for first down.

(01:38):
It looked like he was stopped, but they said for
it progress, but it looked like he was not completely
down and he fumbled the ball, but they ruled it
was not a fumble. And there's been talked about officials
officiating that play. How this goes this. There's been times
when the Eagles had tried running that play and it
looked like a couple of times, I know one particular
game against the Chiefs, wore looked like they false started
and there was another game. I believe that a false start.

(01:59):
Do you think with the latest controversy over this and
just what happens Sunday that the NFL will ban the
tush push that it could get banned or and just
want to get your foss on the coach, Matt, do
you think it should be banned? Just your thoughts on
that whole play, guys. Is always good to talk to you, guys,
typing up, We'll talk again soon. I'm looking forward to
sun all right, Eric, all right, take care.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, we got four home games in a row. You
got four weeks now that you could wear the poncho.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
So or first time in ten years they've had that,
only the second time in Titans history.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
They're correct.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
So anyway, we're all we're all looking we're all looking
forward to that. Look, they've voted on this before, and
you know it has to take you know, the three
forced majority to.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Vote it out.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
So if they vote they voted out, then it's out.
But so but so far they have not voted it out.
So to me, until a majority of the owners, uh
get together and say that we don't want it, it's
always going to be part of the game right now,
and as far as being able to officiate it, I mean,
they've got it. They've got to officiate it what they
see and they've got to officiated you right there at

(03:01):
the moment. So I don't see any big controversy on it.
The thing that I know that is if they want
it out, then they'll vote it out. That's very, very simple.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Yeah, that's kind of what I thought you would tell Eric.
And to follow up on your answer to Eric, it's
a twenty twenty six problem. And listen, I know what
Eric's trying to ask and what he's saying it is.
It'll be brought up on the table again in discussions
in the spring. Whatever they do with it from there
is what we'll find out in the twenty twenty six season. Yeah,

(03:34):
I promise right now it's a legal play.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Yeah, I promise you this. I'm not spending a whole
lot of oxygen worrying about it.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Yeah. I'm right there with you on that, all right.
So the Los Angeles Chargers come to Nissan Stadium on
Sunday as a part of that four game home stand,
and again we said, that's first time in ten years
that that has happened. We are on the A eleven
with Farm Bureau Health plans. Titans Countdown kickoff officially set

(04:04):
at twelve o two with coach Mac and Taylor Zarzer
on Titans Radio and of course the flagship here oneh
four to five the zone. We'll continue to take your
calls if you want. Six point five seven three seven,
one oh four to five around the league in Week eight,
anything stood out to you about those games as we

(04:27):
kind of take one last look back at what happened
around the league.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
Not really, I mean there's bigger separations of scores this week,
and what happens is the deeper that you get into.
You know, everybody talk about the one score games that
we've had early on, Well, that's when everybody had their
healthy players.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
Now, when you get to this point in.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
The season and you start having injuries, everybody has injuries,
different people start playing. The teams that are healthier are
going to have bigger separations of scores against the teams
that aren't as healthy. So teams have started to separate
themselves health wise right now.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Defense every year like this.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Yeah, and you know, you'd be hard pressed to find
a roster that doesn't have some type of injury situation
in fact, this next opponent, the Chargers, when we're going
to dive into that in this next segment about what
they're doing. That's really they're doing really well. And then
some places where they're thin in spots because of injury,
and namely the run game is one of those places.

(05:27):
But on national tight end date, a lot of big
tight end performances in this the Tucker Craft performance by
the Green Bay tight end. He had one hundred and
forty three yards and two scores. He really really was
a difference maker in that game for them. Travis Kelcey's
back to doing some Travis Kelsey stuff.

Speaker 5 (05:47):
That's another thing.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Now, if I've got one takeaway, it seems like the
Chiefs are getting.

Speaker 5 (05:52):
Back on track, well the healthier now, not.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
That they were like ever completely off track, but yes,
health has a lot to do with it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Well, I mean the reports of their demise was greatly
exaggerated to begin with, you know, so, I mean people
need to relax a little bit on all of that.
Teams are going to lose ball games, even good teams
are going to lose ball games, and so, but they
had to get some of their health back. They're getting
their people healthy to your point. They're coming back in

(06:21):
as long as that quarterback is standing upright, they got
a chance.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
It is one week away from the NFL's trade deadline,
and there has been a trade in the league just
before he went on there. The Patriots are sending defensive
end Keyon White to the San Francisco forty nine ers.
New England gets a twenty sixth round pick for a
twenty twenty sixth seventh rounder and White, who had five
quarterback sacks last season. I think he's largely been inactive

(06:49):
on the twenty twenty five roster for them. That's the
only real move in the league today. The Titans had
a flurry of activity prior to the Week nine game
for them.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Yeah, let's take a look at this. So uh. They
signed to the active roster linebacker Truman Jones six three,
two fifty five one year of experience out of Harvard,
twenty five year old linebacker. Also, they signed cornerback Micah
Robinson to the active roster five eleven, one eighty three,

(07:23):
a rookie out of Tulane.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
The Jones and kids from New England. Right, he was
with New England, correct, That's correct? And the other the
other player came from Green Bay, correct.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
And they placed under reserve slash injured pass rusher and
defensive end Ali Gay who was injured in that game
in Indianapolis. And then they signed to the practice squad
a veteran edition in Keeman Hall, the cornerback, third year

(07:53):
guy from North Texas. Signed also to the practice squad,
Hal Presley, the third wide receiver six y three to
ten from Baylor, and then released from the practice squad,
a guy they'd put on there just a few days ago.
The third year linebacker from Nebraska Oshawn Mathis. Well, I
mean a lot of little stuff going on there.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
Well, it's really not little stuff.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
I mean, because you know you're gonna chum the roster,
especially a roster like this that has down so many
people and is so thin, is so thin depth wise, so.

Speaker 3 (08:24):
You've got to continue to chum the roster.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Of course, they you know, you knew that was going
to happen this year, and we talked about chiming the
roster from the bottom up.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Well that's what's going on.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Now. What about some of the college football games last week?

Speaker 5 (08:38):
Now you talk about something and.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
I know, the first college football playoff poll and seedings
will come out when we're on air next Tuesday, as
a matter of fact, But there were some wild football
games last Saturday.

Speaker 2 (08:52):
Yeah, well, I mean that's it's getting down now to
the time. I mean, Conne's football right now at they're
playing tournament foot ball.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Now.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
That's what's that's what's happening now with with with the
advent of the of the playoffs at the end of
the year, is completely changed the landscape. And that along
with the NIL and the transfer portal, that's completely changed
the landscape of of what talent acquisition, what asset allocation
is in collegiate football. And also it makes a difference,

(09:21):
you know, with all of these games and now you're
playing you're playing games with with with you know, within
your within your your league. Now is what you're doing.
I mean, it's it's it's gonna come down to it's
gonna be very interesting the last few weeks of this
season because basically, if if you've got more than two losses,
you're out of the tournament. I mean, let's just say

(09:41):
that to begin with. And so the all these games
that these teams that are still in the hunt right now,
this is they're basically in a one month, one game
season is what they're in now.

Speaker 1 (09:53):
Uh Titans in the community a couple of shout outs today.
So I did something really cool this afternoon at j
Lawson High School and that's out in the Bellevue area.
They're in just their third year of existence. And as
a matter of fact, that football team, starting from scratch,
got a win last week that made them eligible for

(10:16):
the high school football playoffs. Part of a metro Nashville
public school system.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
Just in talking to you today when we were doing
all of our work on the Chargers, you said you
were very impressed with that. Just what the whole campus
looked like and everything out there.

Speaker 5 (10:32):
I've never seen a school look like it.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
And the auditorium we were in, you could have held
a Broadway play in there.

Speaker 5 (10:38):
It was amazing.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
So what it was is the character playbook in mental
health awareness. It was a workshop and it's done through everfive.
I did it last year at Centennial High School. This
year we did it at James Lawson and we had
Kinley Propes and Amanda Stutts, a couple of the Titans
cheerleaders who also did it with me last year, and

(10:59):
our player presentatives were Anthony orgy linebacker from Vanderbilt, Jalen Harold,
a special team star and past rusher that's in year
two with the Titans, and Kendall Brooks, and it's just
a really cool way to connect with the student athletes
at this high school, all football players, all cheer and

(11:20):
they were able to interact with them, ask them questions
and you know, pick their brains about what their futures
might look like because they've all been in their place
where they currently are in high school with decisions to
make about their futures. And it was just a really
neat exercise in saying, you know, it's okay to say
when things aren't okay and when somebody checks on you,

(11:42):
if you've got something bothering you. And there were exercises
they did that brought up questions about how they overcome
adversity and when things happen, how do you react and
balance at a busy schedule being a student athlete, being
in school and playing sports to schedule and all those things,
and all the players and cheerleaders had great thoughts and

(12:04):
insight and it was very cool.

Speaker 5 (12:06):
We had one hundred students there in that auditorium.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
It was really neat well, I mean, Titans, the community.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
You guys were really busy today because that comes on
top of a school show that you did this morning early.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
Correct.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
Yep, we did a school show this morning at Castle
Heights Elementary in Lebanon. And then there was also the
Take a Titan to School event that was done at
Kip Elementary School and they had a big day to day.
That's a college prep elementary and it was a Take

(12:36):
a Titan to School initiative and they had running back
Taj Spears and quarterback cam Ward show up.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
Well that's I mean, look, even if the season's going
going going wrong, I mean, the professional athletes can do
a lot in their communities, and the Titans do a
tremendous job out in the community.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
They do, and you know, it's good for it's good
for the players to go out and do this to
remind them about perspective and what's important. Yes, the season's
not going the way you want it to, where there
are things around you greater than the sport and the
job that you have.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Yeah, well, I mean you've got it.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
I mean I've always felt like that, you know, the
forty years I've been in the league, that you've got
an obligation also because I mean, you know, to be
able to give back to whichever community that you are
that you are living in and working in and you
have the support of that community. I mean I've always
felt it was all the places that I've ever been,
you know, from Chicago to name, you know, to Phoenix,

(13:36):
to Saint Louis, you know, to La. Clearly here in Nashville,
it's important to give back to the community.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
All Right, We're going to give a moment for a break,
We're going to come back and when we do on
MAC talk and it was one that is a milestone
for this young man.

Speaker 5 (13:53):
His first career touchdown and.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
Cam takes a shotgun snap, he's going to roll to
the right, he throws the ins out and that he's
a Titans touchdown. Rookie gunner Helm with his first touchdown
as a pro and it was on National tight Ends Day,
gunner Helm, that was that was a nice catch by him.
I'm excited to kind of see his his growth and

(14:18):
development at this level because he can clearly play MAC.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
Yeah, well, all these rookies, I mean, there's so many
rookies playing on this team now that are being major
contributors because they have to be. I mean that was
that was a nice That was a nice design play.
I mean it was a boot leg. It was a
double layer boot leg in the in the low red zone.
It was a really good job of Gunner uncovering as
the second option underneath there and then also Cam keeping

(14:46):
it alive until he could clear underneath and throw it
to him. But the best catch he made was that
one down the sideline. That was you know, it was
over the shoulder. I mean that was a great great catch,
great throw, great catch. So yeah, I mean Gunner Helm,
I mean, you and I have vetted him pretty hard
coming out of Texas.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
We really liked him.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
And you know, from day one, since he's been here,
he's done nothing but improved.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
He's he's a player. He's a player.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
He's going to be a player here for a long time.
And he's he's been one of those rookies just kind
of like just like Tim d Ka that has made
steady improvement week after week after week. The more opportunities
he gets, the better that he looks.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
To Patriots mack Er, Wheeland and DeLand second trade of
the hour for them. The Steelers have a lot of
injuries in the secondary, right, So they make a trade
and they get Kyle Duggar and a seventh round pick
from New England in exchange for a sixth round pick

(15:46):
in twenty twenty six. So there's a couple of six
rounders that New England has picked up in this and
dumping a couple of seventh rounders in next year's draft.

Speaker 5 (15:58):
So it's interesting kind to see what they're doing.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Well, people are getting getting draft collateral, that's what they're doing,
you know, this time of year. Plus you know they're
reinforcing their roster at this time of year. And you
said it earlier in this broadcast. Everybody is going through injuries, everybody.

Speaker 5 (16:14):
Yeah, the war of attrition is real.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
Yeah, and it's one hundred percent in the National Football League.
And so that's why your personnel departments are constantly on
the move, you know, looking at players, you know, scanning
all the all the rosters around the league. I mean,
this is this is life in the National Football League.
And right now, right before the trade deadline, you know,
people are starting to piece together what they may need

(16:36):
because at the trade deadline you may have some but
it's not as big as what people think it is,
but these types of things happen quite a bit during
the season.

Speaker 1 (16:45):
You know, I was I was seeing the next opponent
for the Titans on Sunday, the Los Angeles Chargers. I
actually saw them in an athletic piece that was done
today about them being a potential trade landing spot for
someone like Breece Hall with the with the Jets because
they're running backs are so banged up. We're going to
get to what those matchups are and look at this

(17:07):
thing ex'es and those why wise here in just a moment,
let's go back to the phone. Six one five seven
three seven one four five David and Lebanon say hello
to coach Dave McGinnis, Man of knowledge.

Speaker 6 (17:18):
How are you this evening?

Speaker 2 (17:20):
Hey, David, I'm doing good. Thanks for calling in. I
hope you're having a good evening.

Speaker 6 (17:24):
Yes, sir, just delivering these pizzas out here, but UH
just wanted to call you know everything that's going on
with our team.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
I just want I.

Speaker 6 (17:34):
Don't know if the guys listen or not, but man,
I want to know that you know there are fans
out here.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
And David, you're kind of cutting out. I mean, I
understand that you I mean, you probably don't have a
real great reception where you are. I understand what what's
your point is you're trying to make and.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
You're one hundred percent right.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
I mean, there were there were a lot of fans
last week up there, and every road game we've been
on RATT, there's been a lot of Titans fans there.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
You can see Titans jerseys sprinkle throughout that everywhere.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
We did a huge Titans rally there in Las Vegas.
I mean the support is still there, and so I
mean then you know that this has been a very
very loyal fan base. It's also a fan base that
cares a lot about their team. And sure, uh, you're
gonna be disappointed when you're when you're not winning. It's
hard on everybody in this business when you're not winning.

(18:27):
But you make a very great point, David, that there's
a lot of good fans and people out there that
are that are gonna they are sticking with this football
team through everything they're going through right now, and sooner
or later, those dividends are gonna be paid. Thanks for
calling in appreciate always hearing from you.

Speaker 1 (18:44):
Absolutely we do. And uh, the Los Angeles Chargers They're
coming to Nashville on Sunday. They are five and three
and second place currently in the AFC West Division MAC.
They started out three and oh and then they hit
a bumpy spot or two in this so they were
blown out by the Colts in week seven. In fact,

(19:04):
it was wild to read this stat The Chargers defense
allowed twenty seven explosive plays from week five to week seven.
Then they got back on track on Thursday Night football
last week against the Minnesota Vikings. They only allowed one
play of seventeen yards, and you can chalk it up

(19:27):
to whatever. But they get their pass rusher back in
Khalil Mack, who had been away on injured reserves since
I think week one, and they got after Carson went
sacked him five times. They were turnover, they forced turnovers
in this It's interesting just to see how they've been
playing because they've had their moments up and down. So

(19:50):
two fifty five yards per game passing as a team,
one hundred and twenty three on the ground, allowing twenty
one point six points per game. Justin Herbert, another orderback
playing very good football comes to the Nissan Stadium Sunday.

Speaker 2 (20:05):
Yeah, Well, I mean, you know, look teams are gonna
have up and seventeen weeks in this In this league,
I mean, you're gonna have You're gonna have good games,
You're gonna have bad games. You're gonna have some games
where you play fine, but you still don't win. I mean,
this is a hard league. It really is. And especially
if you're a young team. I mean it's it's even
harder because you're learning on the job. But you know

(20:26):
the things that that they went through. I mean they
had some injuries early too, I mean it makes injuries
make huge difference in this league. I mean, I've just
lived it for too many years and it's hard for
people to understand. They got the same uniforms on, but
if they're not the same dudes in those uniforms, it's
not the same team. And that's what they went through
a little bit earlier on. But they've they've got premier players.

(20:48):
I mean we'll go through, you know, some of their players,
but I mean Herbert is a top tier quarterback in
this league.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
And then you know he's got receivers.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
I mean, they can spend you're talking about that they
had trouble running the ball. They can spend the football
They've got three receivers that can can do a lot
of damage to you, plus a tight end. So with
a quarterback that's a double threat, there's still gonna be
a problem.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
Yeah. Justin Herbert in that game last week, seven carries
sixty two yards. He's averaging just over six yards per
carry so far this season. And the reason I point
to the run game. Naja Harris they brought in as
a free agent. He's on injured reserve after he tore
an achilles. Their draft pick from North Carolina, Amarion Hampton,
has had an injury. He is about to be in

(21:33):
the return to play protocol after this game on Sunday,
and so that leaves second year man Kamanie Vadal two
one hundred yard rushing games in the last three weeks
top five and rushing in that same window of time.
He had twelve carries for ninety three yards in the
second half of that game against the Vikings last Thursday.

Speaker 2 (21:53):
Yeah, well no, they were starting. They were starting. That
game is getting rid of. It was a boat race too.
I mean that it was a boat so that makes
a difference. But all you got to do is look
at the way the passing game has been propping up
a run game right now, and you can see why
he's having some success.

Speaker 1 (22:10):
Yeah, justin Herbert just to tick over sixty eight percent
completion percentage and great touchdown to interception ratio. I think
get sixteen touchdowns to just seven picks. Getting left tackle
Joe Alt back from injured reserve, speaking of injuries, probably
wasn't a bad thing. You get back him, and you
get back Khalil Mack on the other side. That's going

(22:31):
to help some stuff.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
Well, yeah, I mean they're missing two, you know, pretty
good sized stud players there for a while.

Speaker 3 (22:37):
I mean it makes a difference. It really does.

Speaker 2 (22:40):
Of course, when you and I, I mean you and
I start digging into the opponent after our our Sunday
ball games.

Speaker 3 (22:46):
I mean we spend two days just really digging on
film and you.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
Pull out all the red nuggets and you pull out
all the alphabet numbers and everything that adds up to
what I see on tape. And so, but you can
tell when the top tier players are in their play
and that it makes a big difference.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
So those weapons you mentioned.

Speaker 1 (23:05):
So keenan Allen, thirteen year guy back for his second
tour of duty with the Chargers, where he spent the
bulk of it. To begin with, he leads the receiving
corps with ten yards per catch forty eight for four
to seventy nine, four touchdowns. His teammates Lad McConkie and
Quinton Johnston. All three of those guys sixty plus percent

(23:27):
catch rates. McConkey, he's led the team at targets for
three straight games, caught six for eighty eight a touchdown
last week. And then you mentioned briefly the tight end,
and that is the fifth round rookie from Syracuse, oh
Ronde Gadsten, the second eight catches for one hundred and
forty yards against safeties in his last two games because

(23:50):
he's becoming a matchup issue back because of his usage
from the slot position. Not to mention he's a massive
human being sixty five two forty three and eighty two
inch wingspan. Uh. But I bring all four of those
collectively together because they have five hundred and eighty yards
after contact as a quartet.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
Well, I mean that's why they're that's why they're five
and three. I mean, and plus they've got a quarterback
that could get him the football. And then this is
a true dual threat quarterback. I mean, this guy's not
just rumbling and stumbling when he's running.

Speaker 3 (24:21):
I mean he's a runner.

Speaker 2 (24:22):
And so you've got you've got you've got some issues here,
and you said, guess he's a he's a matchup problem,
and you pointed out, I mean most tight ends now,
even when they split out and you're going to be
matched against the safety, most of the time it's going
to be a safety or if somebody's got a big nickel,
they want to bring a big nickel down. But still,
if you're in a one on one situation, they're gonna

(24:43):
win those combat catches.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
And that's what he's been doing.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
So the defense, I mentioned Khalil Mack comes back off
of injured reserve in that game last week, and I'm
sure a lot of this was dictated after it got
out of hand, but they held Aaron Jones and Jordan
Mason to just eighty rushing yards on nine carries.

Speaker 2 (25:02):
Yeah, well, they couldn't run the fall because they were
so far behind. I mean the score got separated so
much they weren't running it. I mean that you you
watch that tape and you understand why those numbers are.

Speaker 3 (25:11):
Like they are.

Speaker 1 (25:12):
So the defense up front is led by Tuley tu Leo.

Speaker 5 (25:17):
I knew I'd messed this up. Two y polo two.

Speaker 1 (25:20):
He has six quarterback sacks, thirty five pressures. Second year
defensive lineman from Alabama, Justin Kboygby. He had two of
his four quarterback sacks last week. The guy you like
this guy We saw a Senior Bowl a couple of
years ago. Dayon Henley from Washington State. He's a mover
back there, fifty two tackles, he has two quarterback sacks

(25:42):
in this They've got some guys in those first two levels,
the secondaries where they're having injury issues.

Speaker 3 (25:47):
Yeah, well I really liked Henley. I like Henley's game.
They are the Senior Bowl.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
I liked him when I watched him Worston State because
he's a he's a he's a runner. I mean, he can,
he can, he can go, he can, he can go downhill.
The sacking that you talk about. He was a blitzer
at Washington State. He's a blitzer now. But the other
thing is is he can He's a perimeter guy. He
can cover to the perimeter too. And those two guys
that you just mentioned, I mean they're a force up front.

(26:12):
So they and you're right. The place where they're hurt
right now with the people that they're missing is in
the secondary.

Speaker 1 (26:18):
Yeah, so their star safety Derwin James left after one
or two plays, like very early in the game with
an ankle. Tony Jefferson has a hamstring. So they've got
a fifth No, he's a sixth round rookie from Clemson RJ. Mickens,
who had to step up in that and of course,
playing with a score advantage, he was able to get

(26:39):
a pick in that one towards the end. But that's
the place where they're having some issues, and talking about
their offense, back to that for a second. Their offensive
line still isn't healthy, and so that's why it's important
to point out just how good Justin Herbert's playing football the.

Speaker 5 (26:56):
Right side of their line.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
But Kai Beckten left that game last week with a
knee injury and didn't play the rest of that game.
Right tackle Bobby Hart has had his issues. Foster Surrell
replaced Makai Beckton at right guard, so they don't have
all of their full pieces and parts and starter five
with that, but they're they're still they're playing pretty good football,

(27:21):
and as evidenced by a five and three record in.

Speaker 2 (27:24):
This because the quarterback. The quarterback is the dealer. I mean,
that's that's and he gets rid of the ball quick.
Keenan Allen one of the best route runners still in
the league. I mean how long he's been playing for
two hundred years?

Speaker 1 (27:34):
I mean thirteen but yes, who's counting.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
I mean he's he's one of the best pure route
runners in the league. And I mean he can he
can get open. He's a really really good catcher. This
guy's been really good since he's ever since he came
into the league thirteen years as a receiver and still
being a leading receiver on a team that's something, doing something.

Speaker 1 (27:55):
And he got a lot more snaps, reps, targets and
opportunities that he had to make the most out of.
But he got a lot of that early on because
Mike Williams was so hurt because they drafted those guys
pretty close to one another, right, and Mike Williams from
Clemson was hurt quite a bit.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
Yeah, but the quarterback has been there. Oh that's the key.
The quarterback. I mean, we start looking at this just
look around the league. You know, of course, he's not
a reclamation project.

Speaker 3 (28:20):
Rhett.

Speaker 2 (28:20):
But you look around the league at all the reclamation projects,
quote air quotes.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
In the in the league.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
I mean, it takes quarterbacks a while to get seasoned
and figure this game out. But look around the league now,
all these guys are on their second and third chances
that are leading some winning teams.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
Yeah, because you're talking Baker Mayfield and Tampa. You're talking
Sam Darnold in Seattle. We just saw Daniel Jones in Indianapolis.
I mean, there's a list that you can start going
down in.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
This absolutely, and most of them were high draft picks,
high draft picks that weren't successful early on because there's
just a lot to absorb when you're a quarterback in
this league.

Speaker 1 (28:58):
We'll have more to absorb when we come back and
wrap up Mac Talk. In the final segment, we will
look through the Week nine schedule of games in the
National Football League, and we can still take your phone
calls if you'd like. Six one five, seven, three seven,
one four five, and we'll see what Coach Max's keys
are to this game, what the Titans must do when
they roll out of the tunnel Sunday against the Los

(29:20):
Angeles Chargers. Let's go back to the phones, Mac, DJ,
you're on with coach Dave McGinnis.

Speaker 6 (29:24):
What's up, hey, coach Mac? Hi, djay listener, Uh, first
on caller, A huge fan.

Speaker 4 (29:32):
I wanted to know if you think.

Speaker 6 (29:33):
Taj Spears looks like, to the eye test, like a
better running back right now for the Titans than Pollard.
Just in his last game, he looked like he was
seeing the holes a lot clearer and busting through and
just running with you know, some enthusiasm. And uh yeah,
I'm not a I'm not a football grouper like you,
So I just want to get your thoughts on that.
Appreciate you all taking my call.

Speaker 5 (29:54):
All right, DJ, thanks for listening. Appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (29:56):
DJ, thanks for listening, Thanks for calling in. You don't
have to be a guru to call this show. I
promise you I'll be. But look, here's here's the observation.
I think both of those guys compliment each other. They're
different types of running backs. They're they're they're they're very
much different types.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
Uh. The thing that I like now that Tij's brought.

Speaker 2 (30:15):
Back since he's been you know, since he came back
off of that four week hiatus, you know, with a
high ankle sprain he's got he's got quickness, he's got
innate quickness, and right now he's got a nice burst
in fresh legs. Pollard is a good running back. He's
a good running back. He's been a workhorse for this
football team. I think the combination of both of them

(30:35):
is exactly what you're looking for because now, and that's
happening more and more in this league, except for very
rare cases where you you very seldom have one running
back that's carrying the load for a team for an
entire game. Uh. But I agree with you. I really
like what tij has brought to the game. I thought
that that that little outside that the outside screen run

(30:55):
that he had down to the one yard line or
one foot line or however far line that will.

Speaker 3 (31:00):
Was really really good.

Speaker 2 (31:02):
I like both of those backs, But there are different
types of backs, and in your observation, they've got different
types of running styles.

Speaker 3 (31:09):
You're correct there.

Speaker 1 (31:09):
I think the other thing that stands out to Mac
is that Taja is back to his old form. It
took a minute to get back in football shape, to
get back, you know, because being out those four games anyway,
I'm just I think that's the other thing that comes
out of this is that you're starting to see Taja
get back to form well.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
I mean I've been very impressed with him during the
offseason and what he did, and then during training camp,
I mean, he was he had burst, he was running
very very well.

Speaker 3 (31:38):
But look when you get a high ankle sprain, I mean.

Speaker 2 (31:40):
Those things are pretty devastating, especially you know, for anybody
in any position, especially at a skilled position.

Speaker 3 (31:47):
So I think your observation is right there too, Ritt.

Speaker 1 (31:50):
All Right. The Week nine schedule of the National Football League,
Thursday Night, Baltimore is at Miami to take on the Dolphins.

Speaker 3 (32:01):
I like Baltimore in this game.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
I mean, they you know, just and I think Miami
might be playing a little bit better.

Speaker 3 (32:07):
I mean, just you know, just just watching.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
But to me, Baltimore it's one of those teams has
hit a lull and again everybody had him buried underground.

Speaker 3 (32:15):
Not quite so fast yet.

Speaker 1 (32:17):
The other one I find interesting In an NFC game
part of the noon Slate, we mentioned a couple times
this hour about the Vikings last game on Thursday Night
football against the Titans. Next opponent the Chargers last week,
and Carson Wentz has had to play for JJ McCarthy
in that because JJ's had a high innkle spring himself.
Wins is now injured on injury reserve. He's out torn

(32:39):
up left shoulder head surgery. So JJ McCarthy is back,
and they had to Ford Field to take on the
Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Detroit to win this football game, I mean, because Detroit's
a complete football team right now, and they're healthy.

Speaker 1 (32:52):
And you know who else is back to his old
form and Reckon is Aiden Hutchinson.

Speaker 2 (32:57):
Yeah, well, I mean there's a guy too that was
coming off of in that. He's someone you got to
deal with off that edge.

Speaker 5 (33:03):
All right.

Speaker 1 (33:03):
At NRG Stadium in Houston, as it pertains to the
AFC South Division, the Denver Broncos take on the Texan.

Speaker 2 (33:10):
Yeah, that'll be an interesting game because Houston's really playing
good football right now, very very good football right now.
They're starting to hit their stride a little bit. That
game is in Houston, too, correct, correct? I mean, as
much as I hate to say it, I like the
Texans in this game.

Speaker 1 (33:27):
Yeah, I would tend to agree. I really like the
way bon Nix is starting to deal too. All right,
let's see here. The Indianapolis Colts go to Akroscher Stadium
to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday at noon.

Speaker 3 (33:43):
The Colts are hitting on all cylinders.

Speaker 2 (33:44):
I mean, we saw that firsthand in person, but they've
been doing it to everybody all year. I mean, I
don't see any reason why they would stop now going
to Pittsburgh.

Speaker 5 (33:52):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
The other game in the division, the Jacksonville Jaguars head
to Allegiance Stadium in Las Vegas to take on the Raiders.

Speaker 5 (34:01):
That's a three to zero five kick.

Speaker 3 (34:03):
I like Jacksonville in this game.

Speaker 2 (34:04):
I mean, I think Jacksonville has got the's got the
better roster, I really do. They're gonna have to deal
with Max Crosby. I mean, that's that's that's a dude
that you're gonna have to deal with. But Jacksonville's got
a pretty good team put together.

Speaker 1 (34:17):
Kansas City at Buffalo three twenty five Sunday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
Yeah this, you know Kansas City people had Kansas City buried.
I mean, as far as you know, they were dead.
They're in the coffin. Not so fast. I mean, they're
they're starting to play like the Chiefs have played for
the last five years. You know they're they're playing really well.
Buffalo is the team that's that's kind of hit a
hard patch, yep, and so but playing in Buffalo, you
and I both, I mean, I've competed a lot of

(34:43):
times in that stadium. You've you've called a lot of
games in that stadium. You know what it's like up
there in Buffalo. To me, this is a toss up game.

Speaker 1 (34:50):
And I haven't looked at the trajectory track for Hurricane Melissa,
which is just hammering Jamaica right now.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
I see No, you're you're the meteorologist.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
But when I look at a weather map, the things
that I've seen, it's going out into the Atlantic.

Speaker 1 (35:05):
Okay, well that because I was thinking that could have
a bearing on that game where it's already a place weatherwise.

Speaker 2 (35:11):
Not unless they're played in Jamaica, and thank goodness, they're not,
thank good So there they are.

Speaker 1 (35:17):
And then it wraps up on Sunday night for the
Sunday part of it, Seahawks at Commanders and Seahawks. Yeah,
because I don't know about Jaden daniels health in this,
We'll let.

Speaker 5 (35:29):
To see how the week plays out.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
Monday Night football, Arizona is at Dallas to take on
the Cowboys at Jerry World.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
You gotta like Dallas in this ball game.

Speaker 5 (35:39):
They're rolling, man, Yep, they are rolling. Quick.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
Thing that I think is interesting. Last week, the Pro
Football Hall of Fame narrowed down its contributor class from
the Blue Ribbon Committee thirty one original nominees to twenty one,
and one of those is Chaos Adams.

Speaker 3 (36:00):
I don't know why he's not in there already.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
It is ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (36:04):
It is ridiculous.

Speaker 2 (36:05):
And again, I think both of us have been in
this league long enough. I mean I could speak with
I think a pretty good clarity is that Bud Adams
belongs in the National Football League Hall of Fame. Because
without Bud Adams and that foolish club and Lamar Hunt
and the whole group, this league would be different. I mean,

(36:27):
it would be completely different.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
And the only one is that the NFL could couldn't say, Okay,
we can't beat them much join them.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (36:34):
Well, and Bud Adams was a huge, huge part of that.
Plus he's he's a major contributor to a lot of things,
you know, with with with the Owlders and the Titans.

Speaker 3 (36:43):
He should be in the Hall of fame.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
I mean, with any criteria you're looking at, especially for contributors,
he should be in.

Speaker 5 (36:50):
Well, most of the rest of the foolish club is
in already.

Speaker 3 (36:53):
Yeah, well, so anyway, I'll say it again, he should
be in.

Speaker 1 (36:56):
The couple couple of things that are just so telling
on how he was forward thinking about this is getting
television contracts and securing those so those AFL games were televised.
He knew they needed revenue sustenance for that. And then
a few years later, five six years later into it,

(37:17):
as Joe Namath is coming out of Alabama, he had
the opportunity because the Oilers had a dip at that
point after winning the first two AFL championships, that he
could have taken him number one overall in the draft,
and he knew the importance of him being in that
New York market, and so the New York Jets took him.
And without that, again we have no Super Bowl three guarantee,

(37:40):
and Joe Willie Namath and the Jets beating the Baltimore
Colts one of the greatest games in the history of
the league. And so there's another modern football tale you
couldn't tell without KOs Bud Adams.

Speaker 2 (37:50):
Well, talk about him bringing Billy Cannon, you know, oh god,
when the.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
NFL sued him, because you know, he knew what the
NFL is trying to do and signing him early and
he got it done it under the goal post after
the Sugar Bowl. Yeah, they took him to court and
the judge it and that was a huge win for them.

Speaker 2 (38:08):
Just I mean, to me, it's a slam dunk that.
But Adams should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
What are your keys for this Titans club as they
are back at home Sunday at Nissan Stadium against the
Los Angeles Chargers.

Speaker 2 (38:23):
Well, the last two weeks, they've started fast. Offensively, they
got to keep it, keep it through four quarters.

Speaker 3 (38:28):
That's what I mean. They can't hit.

Speaker 2 (38:29):
They can't hit those self destructing lulls that they've had
in the second half. You know, Offensively, they just can't
do it. Defensively, they got to play the run better.
They have to play the run better. That was the
tackling was a problem. I mean, you know, I mean,
we're I'm very honest, you know when I when I
look at this, because I've spent forty years as a coach,
You've got to be honest with your players.

Speaker 3 (38:50):
They've got to do better tackling.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
And then the other thing that has to happen is
they didn't turn it over last week one time. That
was just you know, a fourth down throwaway late in
the ball game. Right, continue to protect the football.

Speaker 1 (39:02):
Please, we remind you Tennessee host of Los Angeles Chargers
this Sunday at Nissan Stadium. Coverage begins right here at
nine on one oh four to five. The zone we're
on at eleven with Titans countdown. Kickoff officially set for
twelve oh two with Taylor Zarzer and coach Mac Dave McGinnis.
All the great phone calls we had tonight, Joseph Bonano

(39:22):
doing excellent work behind the glass producing the show as well.
For Coach Mac, I'm Red Brian. We thank you for
listening to Mac Talk.
