Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to a MoMA Mia podcast. Mama Mia acknowledges
the traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast
is recorded on Hey friends, Lee here. I needed to
share this episode of You Beauty because we were asked
two amazing questions from our ubies, and of course we
answer real questions. They're ones we don't get very often

(00:31):
and really made us think. So I thought maybe you'd
like to listen and hear our answers. Enjoy.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Makeup is my therapy.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
I'm in love. I'm obsessed and I don't even feel
guilty about it. Hello, and welcome to Your Beauty, the
podcast for Your Face. I'm Lee Campbell, I'm Kelly McCarran. First,
I wanted to tell you something I just learned.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
I love facts.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
On average, women take two point five years of their
entire life getting ready.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Oh hell, I'd spit a lot longer than that. Me too,
So I love it. It's part of my Like I love
getting ready. Well, it's literally our jobs, but it's also
for me. It's like it makes me happy time. It's
me time.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
I think that we're meant to be outraged, like the
patriarchy and men don't have to do that well, oh,
they're just.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Too busy spending an hour on the toilet.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, but also we host this show, so that's what
we do. But I also, like you said, in defensive,
people that really enjoy it. If you feel like that
kind of fact is vilifying your hobby, I approve.

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Honestly, sometimes I think with these facts it's like that, Yeah,
they put them out to outrageous. It's like when you know,
they go, if you bother your coffee every day, you're
spending three thousand dollars a year, and yeah, it makes
me happy that moment. I would spend more because that
moment every day makes me so happy.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
And I want to try my scar and I don't
care how many years it takes exactly anyway, Q and A.
So the ubi's ask us questions, Kelly's having a makeup
s Oh.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
I just I really overlined accidentally. And you look good,
just don't look.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
Too good, okay. Zoom in, guys, zoom in. And when
I say zoom in, obviously you can watch us on YouTube.
Now we're video first, so you might be watching, you
might be listening. If you're listening and curious, head over
to YouTube watch us there on mondays, we answer question.
So you can email us you Bedyetmama mea dot com.
You can even send a voice note to the email.
You can dms on Instagram. You can DM Kelly and
I and we pass it on.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
I couldn't help, but wonder asked me anything.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
You ask many questions, two wonderful questions today. What are
we starting with?

Speaker 2 (02:23):
So later on the episode, we've got a conundrum that
I feel like so many people have had.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Guys such a good word.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
I sure have because when I was a teenager, my
mum always was like, when you're grown up, you won't
get pimples anymore.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Lies?

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Why the lies? Anyway? So that's later in the episode.
But first, a UBI who's thinking about making a huge
switch in her beauty routine.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Huge. I'm being sarcastic, Okay, I'm going to read it.
Jesse sent us a DM. She says, Hyley and Kelly,
I'm thirty five and have been using black muscara my
whole life, but I keep seeing people rave about brown
mascara for a more natural look. I have medium brown
hair and hazel lies. Oh my god, you need to
do this. Should I make this switch? And if so,
what's the best way to transition without looking washed out?

(03:09):
What are the best brown mascas?

Speaker 2 (03:11):
I've never heard. I don't think that she's gonna who
would look washed out? Maybe someone with really dark features,
well would look Yeah, you would look washed out with brown.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
No I do it now. Sometimes I've got many things
to say about this. Oh okay, look, it's not you say.
How do I transition?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
It's not not hard.

Speaker 1 (03:27):
It's not that big of a difference. There are some
brown products that throw a lot of warmth and almost
look ready burgundy. But then you've got some deep chocolate espresso.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Brown can't really even tell the difference.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
But with your hazel eyes, it will make a little
bit of a difference.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
I think it's going to look beautiful. Don't we love
a mascara wardrobe?

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Just get one brown and add it to your black rotation,
and maybe you do brown for the office or you know,
Monday or whatever, and you're black for your fancy things.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Do you agree? Oh, I just don't like. Don't overthink it.
It's just mascara. I do like brown.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
And also, it was really hard to find brown before,
and now everyone's doing good ones.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Because a lot of people are making the life changing transition.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
So I've got some recommendations as to you, and I
think we're going to say similar things. But I often
do brown, and because I've got pretty much black hair,
I've got quite dark features. And also I always do
like a bit of a liner or wing no matter
what color I'm doing, So I would start with some
brown liner at the root of the lash before I
put my mascara on. I've got two recommendations because I

(04:24):
love a liquid It's called the Judy Slim Liquid eye Liner.
They've got like three different types of browns. It's nine
dollars and thirty four cents. It's one of those KAUTJ
beauty products.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
It's so good.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
You literally just sort of stiple into the lash line
and it looks like you've had your like tint, like
a lush tint that's brown. If you want a traditional
pencil and something you can kind of smoke out a
little bit and get that real kind of cool look.
I love the rim all Rym's got like a brown
coal that's really affordable, and you just use that and
you've got a bit of working time to sort of
smudge it out. Then just curl you lushes and go
in with your mesca aut My favorites Revlon all In

(04:57):
tubing muscaa in brown full price. It's twenty five ninety
five at the time of recording, and when I purchased it.
I've had it for a long time, but it's often
on sale twelve dollars. It's a tubula, but it's harder
to get off than a normal tubular, but it gives
you really impressive lashes, which you, I guess want if
you're downgrading the impact by color. Yeah, two face better
than sex, which is absolutely cult Status has a brown

(05:21):
it's just called chocolate. Fifty one dollars, so that's at Mecca.
So if you're going to try it and you're not sure,
maybe get one of the more affordable one to see.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
How you feel about the color before you commit.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Correct Then this is my little hack that I do
sometimes because as I age and as lashes go through cycles,
sometimes my lashes are phenomenal and then sometimes I'm like,
where are you gone?

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Where did you flutter off to?

Speaker 1 (05:44):
You got to come back? I bought these on Amazon.
They're there Brown lash Clusters. The brand is TNVF Okay,
I don't know how to say it. We're going to
link in the show notes. And they're like little tiny,
like not individuals but not a fool or a half
strip and they're brown, and so I just put one
or two on the outer corner after I've done my mescaa.
They're very easy to put on eighteen ninety nine and

(06:05):
you get this huge pack and they're like a deep, deep,
dark round, but it just looks like you can't really
tell they're there. It just gives me some definition on
the outer corner. And it's a brown. Oh I love them, Okay,
I rebought them them.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Oh they're so good. They're coming in black as though.
I want to try more brown mascara because I actually
didn't have any recommendations off the top of my head,
so I went deep on Reddit to find some suggestions
for people. So, oh, my hacks are exactly like, use
a bit of brown liner to just thicken it up
because otherwise you might be it might not look as impactful.
Curl your lashes to open the mark. And then the

(06:38):
three that I selected are Mecha Max Whiplash Tubing mascara
twenty six dollars. I forgot about that one. It's amazing.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
I haven't tried the brown, but I love the black,
so I assume it's the same.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
I just read some great things Natio Extreme Volume Mascara
sixteen ninety.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Five about that in the black and it's tubula.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Yes exactly, also comes in the chocolate brown. And then
Tower twenty eight was the highest rated. That's thirty five
and the chocolate color is meant to be.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
I love their black white. I love so much Tower
twenty eight. I'm obsessed.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Don't matter anything. Oh try to lip bum.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Woman, get yourself to mecha the little sos orange, spry
the mini, go, get the mini. Dying to hear how
it goes. Please jump in the U beauty group because
I just want to hear other people's Yeah. I recently
brought like a burgundy mascara.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Beautiful, that's your color, haven't please?

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Also a little trick with like colors, maybe not brown,
but you can do black and then just do a
little green or a burgundy on the tip and it
really brings your eyes out.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
And it also like won't be super noticeable. It'll just
like give someone a bit of it.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
Ooh yeah, yeah, but you just go, oh, I've got
that on. Yeah exactly. The MDS put on your lushes.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
So Francesca has asked, Hello, I'm twenty eight and starting
to notice fine lines around my eyes, but I also
still get the occasional breakout. I'm so confused about what
products to use. Do I focus on anti aging or
acne prevention? Can I use both retinal and salicylic acid?
I feel like I'm too young for any aging but
too old for teenage skincare.

Speaker 1 (08:06):
That's a song too young for men and too old
for women. No, not the one anyway, you just made
that up. No, but there's a song like something like that.
Welcome to having a face.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Honestly, I had awful acne when I was a teenager. Oh,
when you're a grown up, you won't get acne anymore. Well,
yas then I got even worse acne were not worse.
But I've got bad acne again in my twenties. Yeah,
And like, I.

Speaker 1 (08:29):
Don't know if you can see I've concealed it. I
mean it's just one spot. I'm not saying I've bad ackney.
But guy, oh, I can't wait to go home and
pop him because he's ready. Okay, Anyway, you're gonna get
breakouts as particularly if you breakout prone, but you know, hormones, periods, perry, babies, postpartum, perry, peary,
all of the things. So what I would suggest is

(08:51):
to not think of your face as one entity, like
do face mapping. So you're saying you get lines around
your eyes. Also, you're not too young for anti aging,
so where like anti aging has changed. You used to
think of like, you know.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Get rid of your wrinkles, fust yes, and do.

Speaker 1 (09:05):
It when you're sixty and use that kind of weird cream.
But it's kind of like prevented aging, so you should
be doing that.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Anya.

Speaker 1 (09:12):
Your skin is healthy and nourished as possible, basically exactly.
So it's not like we're telling you to go get
anti wrinkle, but the products you should be using are
antiaging by default. So a beautiful I cream around the eye,
it's something nice and hydrating and nourishing, or alternating with
like a retinol cream. The medicaiate one's great. I love
the go to one, So you could do that. I
mean you can do them every night, but something hydrating

(09:33):
in the morning to like plump out those lines, and
then where your breakouts are you can treat them with
something anti acne. Like I think we kind of think, oh, you're.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
Clear a sells.

Speaker 1 (09:42):
You've got to go to that teenage section. There's so
many good things, so spot treat as you go. Or
I do have a few product recommendations, so I've brought
some expensive ones because brands aren't silly. They know that
women are dealing with these two things at once. Two recommendations.
I think you really used to love this one. It's
the skin Cuticle Stilly maarn ce CF so the skin
cuitical C faruic is the famous cult vitamin C. But

(10:05):
they have got one called Silly marim that's do you
want to forty two dollars? Sorry, that is a beautiful
vitamin C. But for combination breakout prone skin, vitamin C
in and of itself is anti aging because it's preventative
and it also helps fade post breakout pigmentation or dark marks.
So that would be great and sorry. But the other

(10:25):
one I brought is from Skinceuticals. It's the Skin Suithicles
Blemish and Age Defense Serum. Oh yeah, it's literally a
serum for both people who want to treat well, not
treat aging, treat breakouts, but also you know, prevent against aging.
That one's one hundred and forty five, so it's a
bargain in comparison.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
To silly, silly mailly prices.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
And that one's got salicilic and retinol in it, I believe,
or maybe the anyway, Yes, you can use salicilic and retinol.
They are both quite active, so it would depend where
and how, but they can absolutely be in the same routine.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Retinol.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
Vitamin a was originally formulated for breakout. So your retinol
is going to help your breakouts as it is because
it promotes cell tone over and kind of clears those up.
So vitamin a is like the gold standard most study ingredient.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
And it's going to do a lot of things.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
So you are, if you're using retinal antiaging and treating
your breakouts, what.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
Do you got to say? I was going to say
the same, like focus on hydration peptides and then just
use your salacilic acid. Why do you love peptides so much?
Explain why this works there, it's going to plump up
your skin and just to get it like keeping it
hydrated and plump is going to stop you looking old. Yes,
inverted commas, like that's what's going to make your skin

(11:38):
look so healthy and youthful.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
And when she says she's not ready for anti aging,
do you assume she means like anti wrinkly, like like
the injections and.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Stuff, or just like she's thinking about those old school
campaigns where it's like get rid of your wrinkles type
thing where it's like, no, no, we're just focusing on
our skin health and I am the same. And then
I just use like a spot treatment on pimples when
they come up. Yes, I would definitely start with a
mild retinal and just work your way up to using
it a couple of times a week. Yes, so this will,

(12:08):
as Lee said, it will help with both the fine
lines and any spots. So Medicate, Crystal, Retinal, Image, Skincare, Retinal,
and Paula's choice all do. I'm sure that there are
other ones, but those are the ones that were top
of mind. All do different strengths, And you can start
at a really strate, don't you exactly, But you can
start like some people might start on a point three

(12:31):
and then just stay.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
There for the medicate systems fantastic. I think I started
a three you go three, six, ten, twelve or something.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
I think there's like a tween or twenty. I don't know,
but some people stay at the six because it works well.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
I just have the three around because I just know
I can use them all regularly.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
So look into something like that where you can get
the different percentage when we had the Medicaid founder on
the formula or not that recently, but we'll make sure
that we link it. In the show notes, he talked
more about their retinals and why they formulated and then
that way. That was an excellent episode. It's brilliant. Also,
I would look into if your budget will allow for

(13:07):
either just regular microneedling or radio frequency micro aneeling, because
once again that will help with both spots and the
signs of aging that you're really not happy about.

Speaker 1 (13:18):
Or in your area, find a skin expert who does
really good professional extractions. I love when I used to
get a lot of breakouts down here. I used to
take pre work out when an exercise very sensitive to
stimulants and it was like stimulating, Oh that makes me
think hober oil. It's antibacterial, but also so nourishing. So nourishing,
That's what cleared up all those breakouts to me. And

(13:38):
I had had millions of peers. I tried everything expensive,
you know, I know what to do for my job,
but her Hober oil just playing.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
Whenever people are wondering about, like how do I fix
my skin, I'm like, strip everything back, just use your home.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Which is not an oil. It's a wax. It's not
going to make you acne worse, and it's antibacterial.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
So yes.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
And yeah, I was going to say extractions. If you've
got some deep breakouts or breakouts you can't clear up.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
My facial lady. Sometimes I'm like, I did not know
there was something there. I love it. And she's like
having a hunt and the things that she finds in there.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
Yeah, it's so as well. Oh yeah, she's a good
to shift treeses. Mine uses like a needle and yeah,
but for a.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
Hair tweezer brows.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
So yes, you can definitely treat both. Think of your
face as separate areas or just find some skincare that's
going to do both. So as you might have noticed
last week, we've changed host Hack to Beauty Bite, which
is just us talking about wonderful things. It might be a.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
Product, anything beauty related. We can bring it to the table.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
Yeah, just a little something to say mine is I
recently cleaned up my beauty products and it was a
reminder to me and a PSA to you is that
your products want to stand up, most of them. This
is your mascara and your liquid eye line. I'm talking
mostly about makeup. I mean, I don't think a lot
of people lay their skincare down in serums and stuff.
They're sitting up. But because my little beauty station in
my bedroom has a row of like storage drawers, a.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Lot of people have them rolled like lying down. Yes.

Speaker 1 (15:06):
And then my favorite liquid line was always drawing out
too much. And then I realized it's because it's like,
why are you doing this to me? So now I
just got I got some. They're from BINGW. They're really cute.
They're meant to be for tooth threshholders, like it's a
tooth thresholder, but it looks fake marble. I've got like
three of those, and it's got all my liquid liners.
My messca is even your concealer with the dough for
given your lip glosses. They want to be standing up

(15:28):
at attention, ready to go with the juice down the
bottom so that you don't have to like brilliantly, or
if you've got your mescara laying down, it all kind
of settles and then one side of the brushes all goofy.
So if you've got you know, it's hard if you've
got just a makeup bag that you keep stuff in.
But it made me think you a month or two
ago recommended a really fantastic small business with a makeup

(15:49):
the makeup everything standing up. We'll link it in the
show notes. I mean, it's not mandatory, but your products
will last longer, good tear, the pigment will stay better.
So stand those guys up and then lay down your
shadow palettes, your bonzes. Everything can go in those draws
in my bedroom right now. And I've got everything standing up.
Now that's liquid is genious.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
Well, yes, I didn't bring anything to the table, so
I've brought a bag to the table. I did see that,
and I want it. I thought you might like to
know what's in my little beauty bag. No, I want
the actual bag I packed for the day. The packet
I just grabbed it.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
But what is the bag? Is it just one of
those freebie bags to get with brands.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
I've got absolutely no idea, but it's like a little
mesh or reverse google image it. Oh, it's just a
mesh bag. Can I tell you what?

Speaker 1 (16:33):
I like mesh bags because they don't take up any
extra space, any beautiful leather ones, but I don't have room.

Speaker 2 (16:39):
Do you want to see what's in my bag? Yes?

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Or no? Kind of?

Speaker 2 (16:41):
Oh no, I'm really hoping that you. No. I guess
it really is your favorite product. Oh so I can
only choose one. Oh, that's a good one. Okay. Do
you know what a brush?

Speaker 1 (16:51):
A brush?

Speaker 2 (16:52):
No? Okay, fine, this is what I would use the
most in this little bag because I just will It's filthy,
but I just will touch up under my eyes like that.
I'll go there, go there, just buff in any product
so I'm not oily or my makeups and brand. This
is a Morphee O.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
I love Morphy brushes, molidy and high highlighter.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Brush, but just everything. It's just I just really like
it because of the little we.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
Should show what's in our bag sometimes because mine's always different.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
But exactly that's why I was like, you've got a
clips in there.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
I do.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
I've got lots of lip products, I've got some sunscreen,
I've got throat lozenges, including these throat pastils. Okay, I
got on Amazon.

Speaker 1 (17:33):
I'm bored now.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
Oh okay.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
On that note, Kelly says, get it everything brush, Stop talking,
pimple patches. Get in everything, brush. Keep it in your
bag for touch ups. Don't worry about it. If it
gets dirty, well we'll keep it in your little bag.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
It's not going to get two.

Speaker 1 (17:45):
Do you clean it?

Speaker 2 (17:47):
That's it it is. Yeah, we're done. We'll be back
later around the week with plenty of glorious recommendations.

Speaker 1 (17:52):

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
