Christmas parties, New Year's summer soirees, barbecues, you name it.
So the wonderful Lucinda and Tam are going to tell
us all about how to get dressed for this season
(00:45):
without having to buy a new outfit for every single occasion.
I'm so excited to listen, so let's get into it.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Whoever said orange is a new pink with seriously.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
Deserved laurels for spraying groundbreaking? Oh my god, you have.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
To do it. You live for fashion. Hello, and welcome
to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that solves fashion problems
and levels up your wardrobe. I'm tamoraw holland our lovely
host Lye Campbell is away again this week, so I'm
joined by the fabulous Lucinda. Hello, my friend and we're
going to talk today about party season. Event season.
Speaker 5 (01:21):
It's on, It is on, and it is safe to
say it's just that time of year again where our
calendar is getting full and choc a block of events,
and not only is that daunting, but it can get
really expensive.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
There's so many things on.
Speaker 5 (01:33):
You've got hens, parties, birthdays, work functions, baby shallows.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
The list goes on, and it's.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
So hard trying to find not only a really nice outfit,
but an event appropriate outfit. Yeah, so today we want
to look at event dressing and our tips on how
we can get around it without overspending.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Absolutely more money for champagne. All right, let's get into it.
So the first thing I want to talk about is
a bit of a contentious topic. It's what I'm calling
the death of the going out top. I wrote about
this for Mamma Mia recently. It was based on the
evidence that I'm seeing and you're actually wearing one today,
my friend. It's the rise of the basic singlet or
(02:13):
the basic tea flipping that formula that we're used to
of jeans and a nice top. Right, we're all internalized nies.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
That was the naughties, wasn't it. Up with that.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
We grew up with that, but now like we're flipping
that and it's like nice bottoms and a basic tea, right,
like a beautiful midi skirt or a you know, a
great elevated gene with a basic tank, exactly the way
that you've started today. I don't know if this is a.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Coincident actually wear this knowing that we talk about it.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Okay, Okay, I love that. So what do you think?
Is it really the death of the going out top
or is it just a fat well?
Speaker 5 (02:48):
I think it is not necessarily the death of the
going out trend. But we are seeing more and more
celebs and taste makers wearing the white tank. It's all
over TikTok as well. So the whole white tank theory.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Wait, explain explain that to me.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
So there's a creator called Childish Sambino side note, I
love that name.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
That's funny where.
Speaker 5 (03:08):
She said if you walk into an event in a
white tea and still be the sheakest, flyiest girl in
the room, you really are that girl.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
You're that girl trying to be that girl, making that
tea look like a hundred bucks d a million bucks.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
And then there's this all this chat around on TikTok
around where is the best white tea from? Like, it
is so hard to find a really good basic white tea.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Okay, so let's break it down a little bit further,
because like the pinpoint for this for me was like
Kendall Jenna and Kylie Jenner went to a basketball game
and they were both wearing plain white tanks. For me,
that was like the kickoff of this trend and it
went viral, like Kendall Jenna wears a four dollar Haynes
singlet looks more expensive than anything you own, And it
was like, Okay, that's all well and good, but how
do we make a white singlet look like a million bucks?
(03:56):
How do we be that girl? I feel like I
wasn't joking, Like your outfit it looks amazing, but how
have you put that together? How can we style a
really basic top and actually still give it flair if
we're going to a party without feeling like we're underdressed.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Well, firstly, it all starts with the white tank.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Right.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
Finding the perfect tank I find actually quite difficult. I've
gone through so many and just all the different cuts,
and there's a lot of discussion on TikTok about where
the best white tank is from. I find I get
a lot of mine from cotten on Rosalie Russian. The
influencer mentioned that's where she gets hers from, and I
definitely love them.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
They're cost effective. I think it's two for thirty.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Most of minor from there as well. I love Rosali
as well. I'll buy anything she mi, so that's good
to know.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
Garage clothing was another one anthropology, like more of the
thin strap. I don't mind not wearing a bra, but
if you can find a nice white tank that you
feel confided in, that's a really good start. And the
bra or of any sort of loge that you can
wear underneath, I find that quite challenging because I've.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Actually got my brass strip showing. I'm hiding it with
her at the moment.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Is that intentional?
Speaker 3 (04:58):
No, I don't mean to.
Speaker 5 (04:59):
I guess it can be intentional, but I find that
quite hard trying to find the right bra under the
white tank as well, and then making the bottom your
statement piece. So I'm actually wearing the Deering World jeans
that I spoke about on the pod.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
It was last week.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
Yeah, them in the indigo color, and they've got like
a slight flare at the bottom.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
Well, they're they're called straight, but I think there's a
little bit of it.
Speaker 5 (05:22):
I can see a little bit of a flare, yeah,
And partnering with this like snake skin belt as well,
So you just make the bottom your statement and that's
where your eye is going to the gaze of your
eye is going to go to the bottom. So it's
the jeans, the belt, and then a nice boot as well.
But like you said, middi's are really big this season.
We're seeing remember the days of like the mini skirt,
so memu spring summer twenty two.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Do you remember those really small.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Do I remember? Oh boy, we unpacked them here.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
And those hemlines are just getting longer and longer and longer. Yeah,
they're sort of coined that awkward knee length skirt.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Have you seen them?
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Hate it?
Speaker 3 (05:58):
And all the wearing those as well.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
I know I'll get there, but like, give me a little,
give me a minute. I just can't wear like a
shapeless pencil skirt right.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
Now, and then even down to the midi and then
to the maxi. And there's a I think called the
hemline in index theory. Have you heard of that Yeah, yeah,
and it's a sign that you could be going into
a recession the longer that hemline gets. Yeah, when you
look at Mi Andmu spring Summer twenty twenty four last year,
they were showing that awkward knee length. So to go
from the mini in twenty twenty two to twenty twenty
(06:28):
five showing that awkward knee length, it's pretty drastic when
he says.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Something, yeah, yeah, I want to challenge us a little
bit on the top. Okay, if we can just dig
in a bit further, because I have this theory that
I learned from a creator that I learned from a
fashion stylist called fefe Milm who's a friend of the
Pod and a friend of MoMA Mea. Feefee talks about
tabletop dressing. She says that you know, most commonly when
(06:54):
you're going to an event, obviously, unless it's like a
suare where you're standing up the whole time. You know,
if you're going out to dinner, if you're on a date,
you're going to be like showing the top half of
your outfit the most, right, So she's said to keep
the focus on the top half of your outfit, whether
it's through an interesting neckline or jewelry or whatever. So like,
how do we make the top half of our outfit
(07:16):
if we're just wearing a singlet interesting or do we
need to?
Speaker 3 (07:19):
I don't know if we need to.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
It's that understated cool that the white tank is bringing
to your outfit. It could be a nice statement necklace
and we're seeing the big chunky necklace having that resurgence.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
It could be through the headscarf. We're seeing a lot
of any headwear as well, even for.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Me, Like you're inspiring me with your glasses, and I
feel like if it's like a daytime event, maybe it's
like kick ass pair of shades or something.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:41):
I even had a trucker hat I was gonna wear
with this outfit. I was giving like a little bit
of Western.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
I'd love to see that next time.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
But yeah, it could be through the eyewear or the
hat or But yeah, I do like.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
The idea of just keeping it understated.
Speaker 5 (07:53):
I do like that tabletop theory, but it is literally
just flipping that on its head.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Yeah, exactly. We're going on under the table, all right.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
So it's interesting that tabletop.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
Most what you're seeing is just that top part of
your outfit if you're if you are.
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Out for dinner or whatnot.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Why number three is actually around don't forget outerwear. So,
I know we're coming into spring summer. It is warming
up and the days the sun is out, even today,
it's beautiful. But as soon as that sun goes behind
a cloud or the sunsets, it can get chilli.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
I think a lot of us spend so much time
and detail preparing our outfits and then you just grab
a coat on the way out, the weather changes and
then you're covering up this beautiful outfit that you spend
time on. So one of my biggest tips is just
consider your outerwear in spring summer and actually style it
with your outfit.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
So how would we do what's an example of how
to do that? Do you think?
Speaker 5 (08:47):
So just taking it into consideration, is it investing in
a lightweight trench or more like a cropped bomber or
a cropped jacket. If you are doing say the white
tank theory and showing some sort of middi skirt, it
is the crop could work really well because then yes.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
I'm seeing a lot of these funnel neck jackets around
and I love the idea of that, like hitting at
the waist and then having a longer hemlne. I think
that's chic.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Yeah, yeah, I always consider out ofwear.
Speaker 5 (09:13):
It's such a shame when you just you cover it
up for the whole event. Yeah, and it's in a jackie,
you don't really like it was one from winter or something.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
It doesn't go with the outfit. You could style it in. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
You could even do like a blazer with a belt
over the top to create some shape if you're doing Yeah,
like I think that's a good hack.
Speaker 5 (09:28):
Yeah, So considering the event and what's on show, whether
it be tabletop or if it's out ofwear. So just
considering where you're going and what people will be seeing.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
Yeah, she's smart, She's thought about it. Okay, I want
to talk about what do we think is like the
party dress or like the piece of the season that
we're going to see everywhere, Just like on a pervy level,
I love. I mean, you're a trend forecaster. I like
to predict, Like you know, I do a lot of
writing about the trends that are coming. So I'm always
very curious about this when summer rolls around. There's like
(10:00):
last year, for example, I feel like it was these
bright printed sets that everyone was wearing. The year before
that we had like the linen Maxi, right, everyone was
wearing a white or black leading dress. What do you
think is the style for this year?
Speaker 5 (10:13):
So I think we're going to be seeing a lot
more muted tones. I remember a couple of seasons ago.
It's like the red remember red was big in summer,
that clowlah blue. It's that mocker brown, pistachio, that powder pink.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Or bubblegum pink, whatever you want to call it.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
But in terms of like the fabrications, the lace, which
I think you've spoken about as well. Yeah, and playing
around with layering, almost intentional layering. So we saw a
lot with Copenhagen, but we're seeing a lot more of
that within our style and separates will be seeing but
not so much matching separates.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Okay, Okay, We're moving on from the sets into more
of like a not much so.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
Buying a top buy not just buying that occasional dress,
buying the middi skirt, buying the short, you know, and
then the top, and then you can style it in
different ways, so it's not just opting for that one dress.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Yes, totally. I think separates are going to be huge.
I've seen a lot around, like when I've been shopping,
like a Dish Nude, Lucy Verge girl Sabo, like lots
of the brands that I personally scroll often too often.
Maybe it's like a strapless top paired with almost worn
like a tunic over pants, and that's this kind of
like really undone easy glamour, you know, and I love that.
(11:27):
I think it's like speaks to like the death of
sort of rigid, really rigid structured tailoring, and it's moving
towards this kind of feeling of ease, and it's really
coming through in the colors. Like you said, it's more muted.
It's like less like flashy, ah dopamine dressing, and it's more.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Like relaxed, chic and comfortable.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Yes, comfort.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
So it's keen. What I was wearing last week on
the poot.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
Actually it was a mini dress by it's actually in
my bougie so I'll talk about it later. But it
was a Maggie Marilyn mini dress, and it's an occasion dress.
I can wear it out and about to parties and whatnot.
But I had it styled with just a pair of
white dish pants and I was wearing it around the city.
So things like that where you're mixing matching and it's
intentional layering, which you wouldn't often do that.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
We wouldn't be doing that a few years ago.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
No, definitely.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
It feels very new, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
But then also very old somehow, very like two thousands,
but in an elevated way, because I can go very wrong,
can it not?
Speaker 3 (12:25):
So yeah, and it's nice. Maybe it's not.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
As skin hugging or body hugging. I think it's just
those layers and just feeling comfortable.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Definitely, Definitely, I love it. Okay, let's move on. So
what else are you bringing to the table?
Speaker 5 (12:38):
So one way, because it does get expensive, The whole
whole event season can get not just overwhelming, but expensive.
So one of my tips to save money is it
sounds obvious, but shop your friends or faith influences wardrobe.
So I'll start with friends first. If you've got some
close friends. I have two friends. We're all similar sizes,
(13:00):
and we really do share our wardrobe. I'm not a
big sharer. I hate sharing when we go out for
restaurants to dinner and sharing meals, and I don't like
sharing my day to day wardrobe. I probably wouldn't share
these jeans or things that you have on constant rotation,
but those occasion pieces I'm more than happy to share.
And my friends and I would kind of consciously buy
a look from maybe a more expensive brand like Harris
(13:22):
Taffa or Mateo. I'd buy the skirt, a friend would
buy the top, and then the other friend would buy
a jacket, so they still work in silent these pieces.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
That's sorry, my mind is blown. What do you mean
you all just like buy it pie?
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Yeah, so Bear Park.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
I bought the Dolly skirt, and then my friend bought
the sheer top, and then another friend bought the Mateo jacket.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
We all wear them individually, but if someone has an event,
they can go, hey, can.
Speaker 5 (13:49):
I borrow that look and we all have that entire outfit,
which would have cost us maybe I don't know, two grand,
but we're able to just save money by buying those
select pieces.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
What kind of coordination does this require? Is there a
dedicated group chat? How are you doing it? Tell me
all the thing?
Speaker 3 (14:04):
Well, it's one of those things. How often are we
going to events at the same time?
Speaker 2 (14:08):
Like?
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Really, unless we're all going out to a dinner.
Speaker 5 (14:11):
It's those events where it's just their event, maybe with
their family, it's their sort of work party or whatnot.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
So that's a way to do it. But if you're
different sizes.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
And I love about you, just drop that in, Like
that's a casual thing we all do. Like I could
just never like you're so type A and I'm so not,
but that's amazing. Yeah, if you want a whole look
and you could do that with friends, that's an option. Yeah,
But if you are different sizes, it's sharing those accessories
like hats or bags. We know that sculptural bags are
(14:40):
having a moment this spring summer.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
That's a piece that you're not going to wear a lot.
Share those, swap those with friends.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Yeah, fun. Yeah, I love that.
Speaker 5 (14:48):
And also if you've got friends that maybe used to
work with or you know, your buddies, you used to
be best mates at work and then you haven't seen
each other for six years you've moved on, reach out
to those people. What I've done in the past actually
is DMed a friend that I used to work with
and say, hey, I love the jacket you're wearing. Is
there any chance you know I can give you a
(15:08):
hundred bucks and I can borrow it from you and
then I'll dry clean it.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Oh wow, that's genius.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
It's like that where your friends slash acquaintances.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Okay, what about friends from high school?
Speaker 3 (15:22):
Okay, so we're going there. We went to school together,
we went to school.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Together, and now we're like reconnecting your later life.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
And then also with content creators that you follow.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
I have had people message me saying, hey, would you
be willing to sell that Venroy skirt?
Speaker 3 (15:36):
Would you be willing to sell that? Mate?
Speaker 1 (15:37):
I've had that too, and I never quite know what
to say.
Speaker 5 (15:40):
Yeah, well I've done it and I either sell it
or just give it away if it's been gifted to
me and I'm done with it.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
Yeah. On the topic of saving money, I want to
talk about like shopping smarter for party season, like where
we should maybe spend where we can save the pieces
that we can rewar. So I'm feeling like I want
to save on accessories. So I think this is just
a really smart one is like buy one shoe or
one statement, yeah bag or something that's going to see
(16:09):
you through the whole season, so not necessarily like it
could be a fun style that you compare with lots
of different outfits, but it's probably better to go with
a more neutral option for that mile age.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
Do you agree, As much as it's really fun buying
like different fancy shoes, it's not worth it, is it?
Speaker 1 (16:26):
I don't know, because like people, the thing is it
doesn't matter rewear as much as you want totally, but
like you know that people know that you've worn it, yes,
or you know what. I feel like, it doesn't like, yeah,
you get that excitement of wearing it the first time.
Then again, I'm going to challenge myself on that because
like my wedding shoes, I bought from Low Florandal years
ago and they were like my favorite thing that I've
(16:49):
ever spent money on, and I knew I wanted them
for my wedding and I've worn them to almost every
major event since. And they're not like a subtle, subdued shoe.
They're like gold lammy in a bow, like a stacked heel,
and they always make my outfit. So maybe do buy
the statement piece, but make sure it's something that does
team with lots of you know, like maybe it's not
(17:11):
red because.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
You might be a shoe person. I'm not necessarily a
shoe person. So I can get by with just like
a standard shoe that I can get through the whole
spring summer with.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
But if you really love a shoe and it is.
Speaker 5 (17:22):
A statement piece, like that, own it and that is
your piece, your statement piece throughout the spring summer.
Speaker 3 (17:28):
Totally.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
But the only thing is, like people will tell me,
they'll be like, oh, you're in those shoes again, and
I'm like, can you Yeah I am.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
There's all those sites now where you can rent the
bags as well.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
Yeah, maybe that's an option.
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Yeah, in terms of where to spend, I think you
can get more mileage out of your pieces by spending
on separates. Like we said, not one statement dress, right,
it's just this is obvious. But like you buy a
great midi skirt, you can wear that in multiple ways
rather than putting all your eggs in that one basket. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (17:57):
I'm still learning this though, because you do see them
online and they're fun. Yeah, want to get the fun
party dress, but you're right, they end up you wearing
once and then you think you could wear it again.
Speaker 3 (18:07):
But you want something.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Fresh one, get the fun party pants. Get like a
black lace pant or something that you can style by
day with like an oversized tea and then like dress
it up with a satin shirt or a blazer, like
there's just so many or a tunic, like we said,
there's so many more opportunities.
Speaker 5 (18:23):
For sure, And if you are going to invest in
the occasion dress, do something like the Maggie Maryland that
I was wearing last week.
Speaker 3 (18:30):
We can share it.
Speaker 5 (18:30):
Here where it is just as it's navy d navy
almost black, so you can get that wear out.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Of it in the mileage.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
Yeah, and then I'm just going to touch on re
wearing as well. I think something you can do is
like look at what the key trend was for last year,
Like obviously your eyes moved on. You want something new,
but don't like discard that great linen maxi that you
bought last year or two years ago. Like if you
have a basic white maxi dress, you know in linen,
there are so many ways to do that now for
(18:59):
this season, you could just like do it with a
you know, a flip flop this time and a great
like I said, a great pair of statement shades or
a different like different jewelry or something like, just don't
like dis regard it because it feels like that's not dated,
that doesn't date nothing.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
Yeah, that's right, and things don't date that quickly. We
still can be wearing last seasons. That's probably a really
good point to save money. Like things we have to
be okay with wearing last season and it's just yeah,
over consumption is something we need to all be aware of.
I actually saw someone online where they're a dish Maxi dress.
I think it was from last year doing that Bandanna
(19:33):
trend over the top.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Oh that's such a good See.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
I'm going to do that when I like, I could
do that this weekend. I've got something coming up just
at the pub. Yeah, just adding that little bit of
print around your way it looks different, yeah, or like
a Rafia hat or something like that, just to update it.
Speaker 5 (19:48):
And on the whole over consumption and spending. Another tip
is gamifying thrifting. So rifting sort of turned into this
cool social game. So you get social clout and currency
from saying that something's thrifted, and you're almost proud of
saying that something is thrifted. Now and it isn't this
niche anymore. I feel like when we were at school,
(20:10):
there was like a small group of people that would
shop vintage and it was very sort of tumbler era
almost you just associate it with the fifties sixties sort of.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Pencil skirts that they'd get from Vinie's or whatnot.
Speaker 5 (20:22):
Ye true, But now with so much consumption, you go
to Vinnie's. I went last week, and it's just last
year's stuff. Like we were saying, I've bought a Meca
Bridge green dress that I'm going to wear to a
Christmas party.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Amazing. So it's not as like moth granny stuff like
we think it is.
Speaker 5 (20:37):
Yeah, there's some really great stuff you can get from
op shops and Vinnie's. So try and make a game
out of it and create a whole look. I encourage
you to try and create a look all from Vinnie's
and then that's a talking point at your party. You've
thrifted this whole outfit for under one hundred dollars.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
That's amazing.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:54):
Yeah, what about the shoes? Would you throw shoes?
Speaker 3 (20:56):
Great shoes? The other day?
Speaker 5 (20:58):
They were just these little white sort of Mary Jane's
that I got. Shoes are always going to be harder
at Vinnie's with the sizes and whatnot, But definitely there's
some beautiful shoes at Vinie's.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
There's lots of great pieces.
Speaker 5 (21:10):
So I even think we should do a post together
where we pull a whole lot of occasion style dresses together,
all looks, and.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
We share it on the Nothing to Wear. Absolutely.
Speaker 5 (21:19):
Yeah, show that you can create occasion style pieces from secondhand.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Well, I find that My hack for this has always been, like,
go to the like bougie suburbs and go to their
op shops, because that's where like the bougie people get
rid of their olds last season dresses, like I did
the same thing. I literally got, you said, a Beckonbridge dress.
It just like clocked its memory for me. I got
a Beckonbridge dress in my size. I still wear it.
(21:44):
This was like eight years ago. I still wear it now.
I wore it to a wedding like last year, and
it was just this perfect classic Maxi dress with like
a really low V and I think I got it
for like eighty bucks, which it's not like it's twelve dollars,
but it was like previous season and yeah, so going
to the more affluent areas shopping their garbage. No, I'm
(22:05):
going to the more affluent areas and like shopping there.
I think, you know, hey, it could work for you
can really find some gems.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
Yeah, yeah, sure.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
I'm a massive fan of op shopping and thrifting, So yeah.
Speaker 5 (22:16):
Don't be afraid to shop secondhand. And also, just don't
get wrapped up in the pressure of events. I'm really
guilty of this. I think with the cost of living
at the moment, and everyone's talking about the event and
getting excited, and you might hear they're buying a new dress,
so you feel you should buy a new dress. And
then it's not just the outfit. It might be you're
(22:37):
getting a blow dry, were nails done. It all adds
up and it can feel really stressful. So don't get
caught up in the pressure. You're there to enjoy the
occasion whatever that may be a baby shower, hens. And
if you are getting stressed out by say the dress code,
decode it. So ask ask the person who's hosting the event.
Speaker 1 (22:57):
Right, There's no shame in that. People feel weird about
asking and I'm like, no, they invited you. They want
you to be like potentially, they want you to be
on brief And there's.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
Some really like ambiguous arbitrary dress codes out there, even
for my wedding, I had lounge wear, which I didn't
really know what it meant means so cool then, like
I just thought it would be cool to put on
the invitation. But there's some like space cadets or coastal
try and like narrow it in a little bit more,
or it's perhaps providing a mood board.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
So this is flicking out too.
Speaker 5 (23:27):
If you're hosting an event this season, some tips on
how you can make your guests feel comfortable, yeah, providing
thinking about the dress code, how important is it for
the event? So do you really need a say, coyote
ugly as a thing where it really will require everyone
to go buy a new outfit, or could you just
get away with having touch of cowboy. I think touch
(23:49):
of is a really nice tip if you want to
have people dressing up or have a bit of flair
without going all out and buying an outfit.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
Touch of red, touch of white, touch of disco.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
Yeah, absolutely, Yeah. I love that you could do touch
of Cody ugly today for example, Yeah, like in a
chik way, no shade, Like, I love your outfit, but
I'm really appreciating the snakes in the book.
Speaker 5 (24:15):
In terms of people feeling stressed at events. I used
to work in events, and one of the mindsets that
we used to always think about when planning the dress
code is planned for the least confident person in that room.
So just say you're planning a hen's party, and this
is for anyone out there who may be planning that
for a friend or sister for the end of the year.
(24:35):
Don't choose, say, a coyote ugly if you know there's
going to be mum's mother in law's aunties there who
are just going to find that really uncomfortable. So yes,
there'll be like a small group of people who would
love that theme, But just try and choose a theme
that everyone will love and then the least confident person
they will make the whole day or experience better because
(24:56):
everyone's on that same vibe and same page. I also
found it really interesting there was a recent poll that
found that eighty percent of people would rather be overdressed
than underdressed. But the kicker was they still end up
playing it safe because they don't feel confident or not.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
I was gonna say, I'm sorry, I don't believe that
for a second. No, I think most people would rather
be underdressed the overdressed. Yeah, no way, I counter that point.
I don't know. I question is sace.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
No.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
I just think people are so much more chill about
what they wear now. Gen Z's more chill about what
they wear. I don't know who you're polling there.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
I'll give you an example.
Speaker 5 (25:29):
I went to an event last year and Kelly mccurran
was actually there, and it was for a brand and
make a beauty brand, and she was. It was at
this beautiful dinner and everyone was dressed up, and I
remember walking in seeing her and she looks so beautiful
in heels and whatnot. I played the cool I don't
really care. I'm in sombers and I wish I was
dressed up for that occasion because it was just such
(25:50):
a beautiful setting surrounded by everyone else dressed up. So
but I think to your point, I agree with you.
It could be a generational thing. I don't think gen
Z's are dressing up like we are.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
The millennials are not at all.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
No, No, I think it's a very different approach to events,
like I've been to events with you know, both feels
funny to break down the generations, but all generations like
you go to a wedding and you've got like a
cross section of gen Z, millennials, sillennials, gen X, whatever,
and I always find it's that younger generation that has
the most like flexibility on what like a dressy look is.
(26:27):
Or maybe that's just like how I am interpreting it.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
Also, where the trends are going, aren't they? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (26:33):
Fair talking about what we're like, we're talking about the
skirts and the white tank like yeah, right, so yeah,
I don't know where.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
That's very that's very cash or go back to the
source on that. Just challenge them. No, I didn't mean
to make it into like a whole thing, but I
just yeah, I find that really curious because I think
most people generally, if you ask them, like on the street,
would you rather be overdressed to an event or underdressed?
I mean maybe just for the anxious quotient of those
of that audience like me, I'd be like underdressed, don't
(27:02):
look at me.
Speaker 5 (27:04):
Well, there's some tips I just find, Yeah, this time
of year is stressful, but plan for these events.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Yeah, listen back, study all our tips. There'll be a
test on it next week to tell if you want
to borrow any of our stuff, not the anxious person
being like, oh no, they're.
Speaker 4 (27:20):
All it's very expensive, how hundred.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
All right, let's roll into bougie and budget. Let's do
like the event dressing edition, something on your wish list
or maybe something that you've recently bought.
Speaker 5 (27:42):
Okay, well, my bougie is a dress I've recently bought.
It was what I was wearing last week. It's the
Maggie Marilyn. It's called the dress all the bad boys like,
but it is. It was an investment. It was eight
hundred and ninety five dollars, okay, but I, like I said,
I wore it here in the city. I wore it
(28:03):
with a pair of pants. I find it's incredibly versatile.
It's Maggie Marilyn, so you're buying New Zealand Esqustralia. But
the thing I love about this dress, and it's almost
a little tit within this bougie is I got it
from a store in Barrel called the Wildstone. But they're
online as well, but they have the exclusive dress. So
you can't get this dress on Maggie Maryland's site at
(28:24):
the moment. So that's a really nice I'm sure there's
other sort of stores that do this as well. But
I love that I'm the only one with that dress.
Whoever else is wearing it. It's a unique dress for
the moment until it's released on Maggie Maryland's website.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
So is it like a pre order situation or they
only had a certain amount in store or how does
that work?
Speaker 3 (28:43):
They know they only have they have stock in their.
Speaker 5 (28:45):
Store, but they're just doing an exclusive deal with this
Wildstone store, which is quite a nice yeah, because I
do find sometimes with events season, just say, sir, you
get used to the print, like we were saying, and
then everyone suddenly got the same dress and you're familiar
with that style or cut.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
And then it gets like duoped all over and everyone's
got it.
Speaker 5 (29:03):
So it's sort of nice knowing that I've invested in
a piece that not many people have right now and
it can kind of stretch and get that mileage through
this event season.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
It's really special. Like I saw you in it, I
was like, damn, it's got a little heart cut out
at the back. Yeah, it's like a little cute sort
of yeah feature I've never seen before. It's very special.
Speaker 5 (29:22):
Dark navy if you've done your color analysis. Like me,
I'm not meant to be wearing black, but I still
love like a little black dress.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
Dark navy is just a nice substitute.
Speaker 1 (29:30):
That's the answer to it. There you go, you're so organized.
I've not done my colors. I'm just like, I assume
I don't know brown. Okay, I so my bougie. I've
been looking for a relaxed maxi skirt for you know,
I'm short girl, so I don't wear that many maxi skirts.
But I found one on the Frankie shop from Netaporte
(29:51):
that I absolutely love. It's like the brief for me
was simple and flowy, but not boho. Okay, I don't
want it to steer boho. I wanted to still feel
modern and minimalist. So it's called the ason aees On
Jersey Maxi skirt. It comes in two shades, so a
cream and a tork. I love them both, but I'm
thinking maybe the cream for me because I do wear
(30:11):
a lot of that color. It's two hundred and sixty dollars.
It's like a slightly lower waist silhouette. An elastic yeah,
so just no structure, really flowy, ill of it, beautiful.
Dress it up. Dress it down fun.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
Do you think you'll commit to it?
Speaker 1 (30:25):
Probably not, I don't know. I love the Frankie Shop.
I've never regretted buying from there, So yeah, I'm feeling
very strongly inclined. If it's not that one, it's going
to be something like that.
Speaker 5 (30:37):
Yeah, I love that. Yeah, my budget is playing within
that out of web space. So a suggestion for a
spring lightweight jacket that you can wear throughout spring.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
It's thirty dollars.
Speaker 5 (30:50):
It's called the cropped Ivory button down a outerwear piece
for spring. It's a lightweight button down jacket from Liness.
So the RFP was eighty nine but at the time
of filming thirty dollars.
Speaker 3 (31:03):
So it's on sale now. It's ridiculous and it's just
that cropped in ivory. It'll probably go beautiful with your
it would.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
I was just thinking that we got an outfit girl.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
And if you don't want to invest too heavily in
this sort of outerwear piece for spring, you want to
actually invest more in the outfit that you're putting together,
it could be a really nice option.
Speaker 3 (31:21):
And Ivory goes with everything. It's a nice white color.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
You can wear that with jeans, Yeah, so many different
things I love that might just have to add that
to my cart. Okay, so we talked about tank tops earlier.
It's my belief that not all tank tops are created
equal there some are just better than others. And yes,
I've shopped from Cottonam before. I've got some really good cheapies.
But I did find a sort of mid like I'm
going to call it. I'm still calling it budget because
(31:45):
it's under fifty dollars. So it's from a brand called
bass Baysee, which was founded by a Melbourne fashion designer
and influencer that I follow called Efie CAATs. She does
really great wardrobe basics, elevated basics, and I absolutely love
this tank. It's the Cassier tank in white. It's forty
nine ninety five. It's perfect for what we were talking
(32:07):
about teaming with, like a statement in bellish midti skirt
or jeans. Yeah, I'm going to try.
Speaker 3 (32:13):
This one from this brand before I have.
Speaker 1 (32:15):
Yeah, I love the t's They're quite oversized, but yeah,
I haven't bought a tank before, so I'm definitely pulling
the trigger on this one. It comes in lots of
different colors, but I'm going to go for I think
I'm going to do.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
This as well, because I get the ads all the
time for this brand and they do look really great.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
I just haven't committed.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
Yes, I have a NIT from there that I wear
a lot, and like, yeah, I have really good quality,
great danim as well. Nice Yeah, check it out as well.
