In this episode of Nothing to Wear, Annaliese Todd sits in for Leigh Campbell and chats with stylist Melissa Murgana about navigating the tricky trans-seasonal wardrobe transition.

Melissa offers practical advice on layering as we move into the cooler months and why small accessories like belts and statement earrings can instantly elevate an outfit without breaking the bank.

Melissa's essential trans-seasonal investments include well-fitting jeans (in whatever cut makes you feel good) and a versatile outerwear piece - but her number one hero piece? A trench coat - the ultimate wardrobe workhorse that can even disguise pyjamas on a quick chemist run!

      Speaker 1 (00:10):
You're listening to a Mother Mia podcast. Mama Mia acknowledges
the traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast
is recorded on. Whoever said orange is a new pink
      with seriously.

      Speaker 2 (00:23):
Disturbed laurels for spraying groundbreaking? Oh my god, you have
to do it. You live for fashion.

      Speaker 1 (00:31):
Hello, and welcome to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that
solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Annalise
Todd filling in for Lee Campbell. I'm a lifestyle writer
and host of Mamma Mere's This Glorious Mess podcast. I
am so excited to be here today talking fashion with
an expert who's going to help us work out how

      (00:51):
to get more out of the clothes we already own
and tell us exactly what is and isn't worth adding
to our wardrobe. Well, the autumnal chill has well and
truly hit the air, but we're still getting those glorious
last pockets of summer warmth. Today we're talking trans seasonal
trends and styles to help navigate this tricky weather. And

      (01:11):
this week I'm joined by award winning personal stylist and
fashion stylist Melissa Magana. Welcome to Nothing to Wear Melissa.

      Speaker 3 (01:20):
Thank you very much for having me.

      Speaker 1 (01:22):
So each week we kick off and we ask guests
the same questions. I would like you to describe your
      style in three words.

      Speaker 3 (01:31):
I would describe my style as feminine, modern, and understated.
And I think I have to kind of just touch
on the feminine part because a lot of times when
either I'm saying that about my style or I'm categorizing
someone's style, they go, oh, no, I'm not girly.

      Speaker 1 (01:49):
      Yeah, what do you man?

      Speaker 3 (01:50):
I actually got nothing to do with that. It's talking
about the fit, like I'm someone that likes a nod
to the waist. Like even with what I'm wearing today,
I've sinched myself in at the waist. Even though my
garments are a bit more relaxed, I've got that nod
to the waist. I've got a little bit of skin showing.
So those are picking up on feminine touches rather than
being too kind of girly and pretty. That's not my style,

      (02:11):
but those three words will be very clear to how
      I dress.

      Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah, no, I've stalked you on Instagram an accurate description.
So they say that we only wear ten percent of
our wardrobe, ninety percent of the time.

      Speaker 3 (02:28):
Oh, definitely a white tank. I run very hot, so
I would be wearing that for most of the year.
Definitely light colored pants, whether it's a trouser, whether it's
a gene. You will be finding me in those through
a lot of the times, even when it's not summer.
And probably a blazer. I've got a lot with my tank.
I yes, and I never go wrong with that combination.

      (02:50):
Like the fact that it's got a collar, it's still
      semi tailored.

      Speaker 1 (02:53):
      It just works for me.

      Speaker 3 (02:54):
I can root up the sleeve, so I'm getting that
skin factor that I spoke about before. It ticks all
      my boxes.

      Speaker 1 (02:59):
And you can do brunch, you can do work, you
      can do dinner.

      Speaker 3 (03:03):
That's so true. It can really take us various occasions.
So yeah, it's just it feels like an easy one
      for me.

      Speaker 1 (03:09):
Okay, Lovely, So we need your help today because we
received a very relatable dressing room dilemma and it's from
a listener. They wanted to know, now that the weather
is starting to change, what are we wearing, like what's in,
what's out? And Melissa, this is most of your job
helping people find their style no matter what the season.

      Speaker 3 (03:31):
So look, it's all about layering. It has been, it's
never going to change. Every season is the same. When
it comes to autom winter, we need something to put
over the top. For most of my clients, that's their
struggle because it's not the same piece for everyone. For
one person it's a cardigan. For the next person it's
a trench. Some people need a bit more warmth than that.
So at the moment, we're seeing lots of like barnstyle jackets.

      (03:52):
There's bomber jackets around. It's all about what's going over
the top that's going to suit your lifestyle and your
      body temperature.

      Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yes, welcome to my world. When I'm looking at my
wardrobe at the moment and I'm thinking, okay, well, obviously
I'm not going to be rocking my sandals and dresses right,
But it's so difficult because you're like, oh, my winter
wardrobe feels a bit tired. What sort of items can
we bring across from the warmer months that we can

      (04:21):
still utilize in autumn and winter.

      Speaker 3 (04:23):
So definitely your T shirt's definitely your denim. We're seeing
so many colors of denim, particularly this season, from preamy
tones to light blacks into deep indigo so you really
kind of got a huge selection there. So they're very
much wearable colors through both seasons. And then your t shirts,
your tanks, they're the ones that we're doing lots with.

      (04:45):
We're wearing them in summer, and then we need them
as the base layer to then add that extra outerwear
option as the weather gets colder again.

      Speaker 1 (04:53):
Like I was just in the process of looking at
my wardrobe and I'm looking at my winter things and
I'm like, it's all looking a bit tired. But you
can't afford to buy a whole new wardrobe every time
the weather changes. What are some really key on trend
items that we can look purchasing just to do a
bit of a resusion, a refresh.

      Speaker 3 (05:13):
So one thing that is coming through heaps with clients
at the moment is they're looking to update their cardigans.
So where we've previously worn something a bit longer, they're
definitely looking for something that little bit more shorter, something
that still goes with the jeans and the skirts and
the trousers. This is where you might inject a little
bit of color. I've got lots of clients loving that
sort of burgundy that is very much on trend. So

      (05:34):
that's definitely a piece that they can wear lots, so
I guess that's sort of worth the investment. And then
other things like belts, they're so handy, like hopefully you
can see what I've got on today, but like I've
got this kind of reptile belt. It's really piecing too
existing that I've had for several seasons pieces and really
trying to elevate them and just turn them a bit
more contemporary with something that's very on trend, which that

      (05:56):
kind of reptile whole snake skin is doing without spending.

      Speaker 1 (06:01):
Too much yees. So it's just about little accents and
      features correct.

      Speaker 3 (06:05):
Well, most people aren't just going to go out and
buy a whole new outfit, So what are those little
injections that you can do to offer enough of a
refresh so you don't feel bored that still deliver on
the comfort and everything that you need your wardrobe to
      do for you.

      Speaker 1 (06:19):
Yeah, and with the colors, I'm seeing so many Burgundies, Chocolates, neutrals,
Like why are they such great transseasonal colors.

      Speaker 3 (06:28):
They've got the richness, I guess, which is what lends
itself to getting as that where it gets cooler, those
kind of hues really come into their own. They've got
that sort of depth of color as well, which you
know lends itself to winter, and they're just I feel like,
quite easy to wear. Like those plums, they're very much workable.
Back with your neutrals, back with your blue denim skirt, jeans, whatever.

      (06:51):
We're also seeing a lot of gray coming through again.
That's sort of a neutral that has been in the
background for a little bit and now it's kind of
coming to its own. So yeah, that sort of charcoal again.
It works with blacks, it works with whites, it works
with creams. So I think they're still very versatile enough
to work back with enough of the color palette that
      we would have to work.

      Speaker 1 (07:12):
And then with something that's so on trend, like all
of the different hues of chocolate that we're seeing, would
you sort of advise like not to maybe go on
by everything brown because like next season it might be
      look brown.

      Speaker 3 (07:24):
Yeah, at the moment, chocolate is trending, but it actually
has been in the market for a couple of years already.
It's just probably a bit more prominent in terms of
now it's in bags and now it's in shoes. It's
really kind of spread itself a bit wider. So yes,
I wouldn't advise buying head to toe chocolate if that's
what you want, But the little accents are really handy
      to do.

      Speaker 1 (07:43):
And how can we mix our statement colors with neutrals
without feeling like too loud or too plain.

      Speaker 3 (07:49):
I think that's where the reptile print, the snake skin
that seems to be doing the rounds at the moment
can be really good because it's incorporating a few different colors.
It gives you opportunity to blend, so rather than having
very stark kind of colors in your top to bottom,
it's a it's a really nice blending kind of tool
rather than just doing a solid color or even picking

      (08:09):
up on something softer. There's a lot of swede around
that could be a softer, subtle way to capture the
      color palette that you've got.

      Speaker 1 (08:16):
We've talked about layering and outer wear, and we've talked
about cardigans, blazers, staple uniform What are some other essential
layering pieces you would always recommend?

      Speaker 3 (08:30):
      Definitely?

      Speaker 1 (08:30):
      Genes.

      Speaker 3 (08:31):
Genes are something that for most people they are now,
particularly post COVID. They can certainly get away with wearing
to the office as well as having a non gene option.
I can't tell you how many clients that I've had
that are looking for that they've got the gene and
then they're like, what's my other option if it's not
a gene. So having an alternative pant is definitely advisable,

      (08:53):
and if possible, having two out ofwear options to go
with at two different lengths. So if you have got
something a bit short or a bit hip high in
the cardigan, do you go for a coat again, or
a trench or a coat something that's going to give
you some lengths. Just give one attention to your.

      Speaker 1 (09:07):
Outfits, okay, and how do layer and without sort of
ending up feeling too bulky? And then the other thing
is as well, like this time of year, it's like, oh,
it's crisp in the morning on the weekend, I left
in like my elevated tracksuit, pant and a little tea
and my shack it and then I was boiling by

      (09:27):
ten am and I'd overdressed. How do we sort of
get it right this time of year when we're sort
of one foot in, one foot out.

      Speaker 3 (09:33):
I think it also comes back to actually knowing your
body temperature, because mine's definitely changed over the years. For me,
a tank and a blazer would probably suffice for pretty
much all three winter, but for the next person it's
going to be that little bit different. And also thinking
about fabrics. You know, if you are someone that maybe
sweats easily, maybe going for some natural fibers in your
T shirt so you're kind of covering that as well.

      (09:55):
There's only so many layers that we can do, but
I think you've got to think about your kind of
combination that you're comfortable with. For someone, it's going to
be a shirt and a jumper. For the next person,
it might be a T shirt with a sleeveless vest
over the top. You just got to pick the poison
      that works best for you.

      Speaker 1 (10:09):
I'm a bit of a reptile. I feel the cold.
I'm always having lots of layers on me. Are there
any fabrics or text is that work particularly well in
      unpredictable weather?

      Speaker 3 (10:19):
We definitely thinking about the composition of the garment is important,
and maybe if you do feel like you would overheat easily,
maybe just going for a percentage of wool that often
gives enough texture, enough tactile interest without being sort of
too warm, and then it does a lay to put
a layer underneath if you need to.

      Speaker 1 (10:38):
How do we adapt current fashion trends in a more
wearable trend seasonal way, thinking about people's budgets and how
we can really maximize and getting those staatefle pieces into
      our wardrobes.

      Speaker 3 (10:51):
Well, I think if you get the right ones in
first time round, it does make it a little bit easier,
so you don't feel that every season you're actually having
to update. And it could be just the small earring
under thirty dollars just to add a little bit of
fashion element without changing up the whole outfit.

      Speaker 1 (11:08):
And I agree. I feel like you can put an
earring or a necklace on and you're like, oh, I
suddenly feel put together and dressy.

      Speaker 3 (11:14):
It's really about adding dimension an earing through a little scarf,
through finishing it off with a belt. So many people
want to wear a belt, for example, and they just
never think to just go that extra step and just
chuck one on, because it really does make all the
different to looking a little bit more polished, looking a
little bit finished. The nesting is equally as important as
I guess the clothes that you're putting on.

      Speaker 1 (11:35):
I agree about the belt, and I think it's a
bit of a hangover from the nineties because we used
to wear belt and then we're like, oh, no, we're
not wearing belts now because our jeans were like down
to our pivic bones. Belts are coming back in. So
you don't automatically think to wear a belt because you're like, oh,
that's what fifty year old dudes wear with their chinos.
When you pop one on and there's a little gold accent,

      (11:56):
you just do look more polished.

      Speaker 3 (11:58):
Yes, yes, And a little bit of advice is that
go through and find some inspiration for yourself and then
if you do notice it, oh, actually she's wearing a blazer,
or she's always wearing a scarf, or she's always has
got something in her ear. Maybe that lends itself to
looking at inserting a little accessory and for some people,
for most people, it's not multiple, it's just somethin it's

      (12:21):
just that one finishing element. Whether it is the belt,
whether it is the earring, whether it is a bit
of a layering statement necklace, it's something to just complete,
feel completed and a bit more considered, rather than just
rushing out the door with T shirt and jeans.

      Speaker 1 (12:35):
Yeah, and where should people go to look for inspiration?

      Speaker 3 (12:39):
Everywhere on the street when you're at the shop, so
many people they're everywhere, they're doing the same thing as you.
So it's good to kind of see people in their
own environment. And if you're going to be in that environment,
it makes sense to actually just check out what other
people are doing, so whether that's at soccer practice or
whatever it might be. So if it's not just around
you visually, you can look at Pincher, you can look

      (12:59):
at Google. You can even look at websites in terms
of how they've styled their garments. If you particularly like, say,
for example, I don't know, country Road, you might draw
inspiration for how they've put that garment together to create
a whole outfit. And yeah, look, some people like to
look at Instagram accounts. There's certain ones that they particularly like,
but really nothing beats just actually what you're seeing and

      (13:21):
what you're doing. And if you're in that situation, then
you've got to look to the next person to see
what they're doing, given that it's the same situation.

      Speaker 1 (13:29):
Yeah, are you one of those people that will like
run up and take a photo, and so I've just
got to find out where you got this.

      Speaker 3 (13:35):
No, because usually I'll know where it's from. Even I
take inspiration because you know, I'm not perfect. I actually
love to see how other people style. So every day
when I'm in stall working with clients, I'm constantly looking
at what people are wearing to the shops and how
they're piecing together, and I'll be like, oh, I didn't
think to do that, Like why not?

      Speaker 1 (14:08):
So if someone wants to shop smart and they are
on a budget, what other three must have essential items
worth investing for that work year round?

      Speaker 3 (14:19):
I would definitely say a pair of jeens. I feel
like I've gone back to them a few times, but
definitely a pair of genes. And I think people are
in that mindset of blue jeans, but actually no, maybe
blue isn't for you. Maybe it's light color, or maybe
it's going to a charcoal or an indigo. So just
think of a denim rather than thinking be quite specific
with the color. So a great pair of genes, whatever color,

      (14:41):
      And would.

      Speaker 1 (14:42):
You say in terms of the cut, it really depends
on you and what makes you feel good, Like there's
no like, it's style, it's like, whatever makes you feel good.

      Speaker 3 (14:50):
Yeah, I know that the barrel style gene is trending
at the moment, and the widely gene has been for
so many years now. Clients will still come to me
and they'll be like, oh, you know, I heard that
skinny jeans are out, and I always say they're actually
never gone out. They're still everywhere and we can still
find them and buy them. But it's more about what's
suiting your shape best. I think that's more important. So

      (15:12):
definitely a great pair of genes that fit, that do
the right things that you want them to do, because
not everyone wants to have a really fitted pair around
the bottom. Some people do, some people don't. Some people
like a relaxed fit through the thighs, some people like
something more fitted, some people like something that's a bit
more ankle length. Some people want a full length so
that they can wear it with the trainer, and that's
their vibe, and that's fine. You just have to determine

      (15:34):
what that is going to look like for you. So
definitely a great pair of denim, regardless of color. And
the second option would be an hour to wear option.
So again it's going to be based on what's going
to work for you. But having a cardigan, a crop trench,
maybe it's a long trench, but it's something that you
can put over the top because even in summer you
might still need that light layer. Whether it's a denim jacket,

      (15:55):
it's something that will help you for the majority of
the year. And I think my last must have would
be a closed front shoe because if it's open toe,
it doesn't give you the flexibility in winter, but at
least in summer you can wear a closed toe, whether
      that's a ballet, whether that's a mule, I think you've
got more longevity if you've got the front at least

      (16:16):
covered because realistically, well for a lot of Australia, we
don't wear boots for that many months of the year.
So at least having a closed toe does give you
      enough options.

      Speaker 1 (16:26):
And we're talking about a flat here.

      Speaker 3 (16:27):
Could be whatever you're like. Okay, Yeah, Like yesterday I
was in Myra and I saw this lady and she
had a pointed heeled mule with her ankle length white
trousers and it looked great. Not everyone could wear that
heel for a prolonged period of time, but looked good
      on her.

      Speaker 1 (16:43):
Okay, So now I'm going to really like drill you
down now because I've gone from like, you know, your
top things, and we've gone to three finish this sentence.
If your trans seasonal wardrobe only had one hero piece,
it should be a trench coat. I was hoping you'd
      say that.

      Speaker 3 (17:00):
I've got a few, and I still reach for them.
I haven't bought one in the last three years, but
I've had mine for the last maybe seven and they're
still going strong. So to me, that's an excellent sign
of good use of my money and giving me longevity
that I need. And I still get stopped in the
street going, oh, where did you get that trench from?

      Speaker 1 (17:17):
      Where's your trench from?

      Speaker 2 (17:18):
      Yeah?

      Speaker 3 (17:19):
I actually got two that I rotate particularly frequently, one
from Camilla remark I'll never forget the Bobby trench. It
was hard to get I got my hands on it.
And then actually one that I got on sale from Basics,
so yeah, I snared a bargain there. So two ends
      of the spectrum.

      Speaker 1 (17:35):
And the thing I love about the trench is like,
sometimes I could chuck that on when you were in leggings, yes,
and all of a sudden you're like looking elevated and
active wear, and you can kind of wear it with
any outfit and it just makes you put a little
      bit more put together.

      Speaker 2 (17:50):
      That's right.

      Speaker 3 (17:50):
And I think the collar helps. I think the majority
of them have some sort of a belt sash, so
that helps. It's those little details that really just yeah
for me, just I can't go past reaching for a
      trench all the time.

      Speaker 1 (18:04):
And actually, the other night, I'd already got changed into
pajamas and I remembered I had to go to the
camus before it closed, and I popped my trench on.
Did it up? No one knew I was in pjs.

      Speaker 3 (18:13):
That's so funny because I was watching a TikTok and
she is heavily pregnant. She was wearing her black pajamas,
she threw on a trench and then she went to
a wine bar with her husband. She was just comfy
and that just seemed to do enough, gave her enough coverage,
enough warmth, and she obviously felt comfortable enough to hit
up a wine bar in a trench coat with her pjs.

      Speaker 1 (18:31):
      Very versatile, the trench.

      Speaker 2 (18:46):
      It's very expensive.

      Speaker 1 (18:48):
How Wondred is We like to finish off with our recommendations.
We've got our bougie and our budget recommendations. I'm going
to do my boogie option first.

      Speaker 3 (19:01):
      Okay.

      Speaker 1 (19:02):
Now, the thing about me is I am accessible queen.
So my boogie option is not that boogie to be honest,
because that's just not me. Even though we're a little
bit into autumn, I've worn them so many times already.
It's hush puppies. It's Loretta boots in black from Maya.
They're two hundred and forty nine to ninety five and
they're that equestrian boot but in the ankle version, so versatile. Yeah,

      (19:27):
obviously in summer I don't wear them. I've already been
wearing them with a skirt or a dress. I've worn
them out to gigs, I've worn them out to dinner
with a tailored jean, to work, and so you can
just wear them with so many outfits, and it also
just makes you again look a bit more put together
      because you're like, oh, she's in a.

      Speaker 3 (19:45):
Boot boots, yes, but they're flat.

      Speaker 1 (19:48):
Yes, So you can dance at a festival company or
you can wear them to the commute to work.

      Speaker 3 (19:54):
      My recommendation is equally versatile.

      Speaker 1 (19:57):
      However, is it bougie?

      Speaker 3 (19:59):
My bougie but let me tell you, when I think bougie,
I'm really going to the top end of town.

      Speaker 1 (20:04):
No, that's good. I want to hear that it's nice
to have accessible, queen, and then we've got our aspiration. No, queen,
      it's good to have both.

      Speaker 3 (20:11):
This is really lucks. But it would be a pair
of the y cell Penny loafers.

      Speaker 1 (20:16):
      Oh, okay, stunning.

      Speaker 3 (20:18):
I love a loafer, and I particularly like these ones
because they don't come up too far up your foot,
so they still show it for me enough skin without
feeling too masculine. They're not too chunky, They're comfortable. They've
got a nice alm and toe. They come in a
range of colors. Price point, yes, excessive, totally, But what
are we talking here, upwards to fifteen hundred.

      Speaker 1 (20:40):
You know it's boogie. This is your boogie Wraco.

      Speaker 3 (20:42):
The colour ways are awesome. There's like a chocolate sway.
There's even like an eel kind of a crewe color.
They're spectacular. The good news is that so many brands
      have duped them remarkably well.

      Speaker 1 (20:54):
Yeah, exactly, so you can still look like you're wearing them.

      Speaker 3 (20:57):
Well, yes, besides the wire logo, no one would be
none the wiser. However, I'm going to take it one
step further and not go for a black pair because
I've already got a black loafer, so I'm looking to
invest in an on black loafer, and they are high
      up on my list.

      Speaker 1 (21:13):
Okay, what color would you go?

      Speaker 3 (21:14):
I do like the idea of the brown because I
don't wear a lot of brown in garments. I would
hence go to the accessories being the shoe.

      Speaker 1 (21:23):
Yeah, and I think yours is actually arguably more trans
seasonal because a loafer you can wear with a dress
with screw it mne I can, but it's just more
not going to be wearing a boot in summer. Yes,
all right, So my budget is it's actually the denim
shackt that I'm wearing today. Oh yeah, I would say
it's in my top two percent of my wardrobe that

      (21:45):
and it's so great for transseasonal. It's the nineteen sixty
four Denim Company Women's shacket from Big w It's thirty
five dollars. Wow, I know. So the sheer number of
times I've worn it, I've made money in girl mass.
So transseasonal friendly because you can wear it over a
tea or a tank open and you can wear it

      (22:06):
as that really lightweight, literally like a jacket that you
would put on for a dress. Today, I'm wearing it
with the Canadian tuxedo being dumble dinner and jeans. I
see that like it, yes, and so for me, I
just love it and it's just comfortable. You don't have
to iron it, which is big ticks in my books.

      Speaker 3 (22:25):
A tick is it okay if I stick with a
budget shoe, because I know that for most people, the
y clle option is impossible to get. Like I said,
there's assembly label ones that are leather for a hundred lot,
bloody fantastic. There's a reason why they're on pre order
because they just the girlies get it. They know they

      (22:45):
snap them up. They come in three colourways. They're a gem.

      Speaker 1 (22:49):
      What are the other colourways?

      Speaker 3 (22:50):
That are black, chocolate and then a light creamy tone.
You can select which color you want. I think they're
all on pre order. They're that good and.

      Speaker 1 (22:58):
One hundred and fifty compared to Jean HUNTERTT that's a
      big difference.

      Speaker 3 (23:01):
That's a great and I think the added bonus is
that they're actually really sleek and minimal looking. There's no logo,
there's not too much detail, there's just enough. They're really
sleek looking, and I guess it's all about that quite
luxury hate. You would never know where they're from.

      Speaker 1 (23:15):
Well you might, but most people wouldn't exactly you would,
      but then that's okay.

      Speaker 3 (23:21):
I would know a lot, but even still simply label
are known for their nitwear and they're known for other things,
not so much shoes. So I love that they've kind
of delved a little bit into the shoe market and
obviously it's so far worked out for it really well.

      Speaker 1 (23:34):
