programmer not necessarily those of this station. The biggest conversation
in Newfoundland and Labrador starts now Here's VOCM Open Line
(00:22):
host Paddy Daily.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, all right and good morning to you. Thank you
so much for tuning into the program. It's Wednesday, August
the thirteenth. This is open Line. I'm your host Patty Daily.
David Williams, he's produced the program. We are looking forward
to speak with you this morning on a topic of
your choosing. So if you're in the Saint John's metro region,
the number of dollar in the Q and on the
air is seven zero nine two seven three five two

So a little bit of Kindada Summer games notes, Why
not so good luck for the New Flying Labor women's
basketball team, big game this afternoon five thirty versus New
Brunswick at the power Plex over in Crosby wrote the
winner advances to the medal round, so obviously a big game.
(01:07):
Alina says. The tickets are all sold out, but based
on capacity, might be able to be a walk in
later on this afternoon, So good luck to the girls
in the basketball game at five thirty v New Brunswicker.
Let's highlight a couple of the young athletes. Of course,
you know me, of course, cheering for people from this province.
But let's look at the youngest athlete in the competition.
(01:28):
She is from yellow Knife, Thank you, Linda. She's from
yellow Knife. Her name is Louisa Henry. She completed her goal,
accomplished her goal. She swam in the fifteen meter freestyle,
later swam in the preliminary heat in the fifteen meters backstruck,
which she won. She's eleven years old. She's going to
grade seven, so of course she looks up to Summer
Macintosh who was making waves at the age of twelve
(01:48):
as well or at eleven. So Luisa Henry is an
eleven year old competing in the games.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
She's not alone. Her two older sisters, Beatrice and Josephine
are also here competing in the game.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
So obviously nice athletic young fan family there, so good lucky.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Way to go, Luisa.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
And how about this young lady Alissa Smith from Ontario.
She has her third and fourth gold medals at the
Games as of yesterday, so she's won a gold medal
in each of the first three days of competition. So
amazing stuff there for her four gold medals already in
the Games.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Congratulations bravo.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
I want to give a shout out to the U
seventeen Selects fastball softball team. They competed in the Nationals
and Napanee, Ontario this past weekend. Finished fourth, which is
pretty good result for our team from the province, even
though we really punch above our weight in that particular sport.
Outfielder Jared Pico of Pacentio was named to the all
tournament All Star team, So pretty good effort up in Ontario. Okay,
(02:44):
more serious matters, it's unfortunate when issues like this, like
the wildfires and the crisis that it is, when it
leads to the so called in somehow, the divisiveness that
just pops up. And maybe he's just the echo chamber
of social media that gives me that thought, but it's
happened for.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
The wildfire around.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
If there is going to be an update offered by
the problems at ten o'clock. We're going to carry it
here live. When I hear people say, and I agree
with them entirely, is these updates? Yes, of course people
need and want the information and the government has chosen
to offer set information through the Premier. And whether it
be John Hagee and Jonas Mithsgerald talked about smoke, and
you know, I do think it's a reasonable request that
(03:28):
even if we know fire duty managers and other professionals
working on combating the fires are busy, obviously, so if
it was something similarly representing their words, and of course
these people are given the information directly to the Premier
staff and then it's given to us by the Premier himself.
But I understand what people are saying. You know, for
the folks who have the operational experience to be involved
(03:49):
in these press conferences would be helpful. But we're going
to carry it live. At ten we can get into
all the evacuation alerts and the evacuation advisories and the
evacuation orders, of which there are many here in the
Primrobbins there's thousands of people displaced, evacuated from their homes
there are people doing their level best, really taking on
the most challenging circumstances to fight these fires. So, as
(04:11):
opposed to some of the thoughts that I see offered
on social media in particular, maybe when you go to
say something or write something, just consider the folks who
are indeed doing everything possible. I have no idea, no training,
or no expertise in fighting wildfires, but the folks who
are doing it have that actual experience and training. Okay,
(04:32):
we've talked about this a couple times on the show.
So for like the volunteer firefighters and others who are
volunteering to offer supplies and support and fighting the fires,
what have you, the thought was maybe discounts at retail
stores and what have you, and possibility for compensation to
come from the provincial government for them, and thankfully it is.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
That's a good decision.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Of course, the volunteers, they do exactly that for all
the right reasons. But these are extraordinary and extreme circumstances.
So we're told by the premier yesterday that there will
be some compensation coming to these people for the work
they do. It includes also people doing traffic control after
burn cleanup and what have you.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
So I like the sounds of that. What do you think.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
We've talked about the fact that the province has indeed
so called drag their feet trying to decide what to
do with the twenty eighteen damaged water bomber, and now
they're going to repair the Hablin has a contract for
some seventeen million dollars. Okay, Again, we have the resources
we have, and we're thankful for everyone doing everything they can.
But looking into the future, you know, we do know
(05:31):
if you order a new water bomber today, you're not
going to get it until twenty thirty two or twenty
thirty three, which is a.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Long way down the road.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
So again, we have what we have, and I'm not
complaining because I have no earthly understanding of power're combating
the wildfires. I don't know anything about it. But wouldn't
you look at trying to bring in more fire suppression infrastructure.
There are tests going on around the country on some
pretty interesting things, like, for instance, people ask about drones.
Now for folks who just have a drone for their
(05:58):
own hobby or recreation, I'm sure it's tempting to fly
or drone over some of these fires to get their
dramatic videos. But of course that really impedes the opportunity
for water bombers to operate safely. So we're told it's
restricted airspace, don't do it. But there are tests ongoing
right now in the province of British Columbia on these
heavy carried drones called thunder wasps. Okay, it's pretty amazing stuff.
(06:21):
So we know twenty twenty three was the most destructive
wildfire season on record, and now people are wondering what
other technologies can we use to combat these wildfires. So
these drones are pretty massive. The measure three point five
meters by three point five meters. The lifting capacity is
four hundred kilograms, which is not insignificant when we're talking
about trying to do damper hotspots. So the drones can
(06:43):
fly for two hours. Three thunder Wasp drones can carry
twelve hundred kilograms. A medium sized helicopter can lift eleven
hundred to sixteen hundred kilograms, So they could play an
active role and certainly the costs when compared to water bombers,
would be drastically reduced. Then I was received a note
yesterday from Cougar Helicopters talking about their parent company and
(07:05):
their work they're doing with fire raptor helicopters. So again,
we have what we have, and other provinces are trying
to support us, and we appreciate their efforts, and certainly
everyone who's opened the realms to help the evacuees, good
for you, congratulations and thank you. Also, people are mindful
of people trying to deal with wild animals who are
fleeing the fires and being spotted in places where you
(07:28):
might not normally see these numbers of wild animals, so
be careful. Then it's the whole concept of evacuation.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
Alerts and how you should be prepared. We're going to
try to.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Get someone on to break it down a little bit
further for us, But I suppose.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
If you're living in one of those communities.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
It's important to just make those plans and pack that
go back and plans for your pets if you have
to leave and go to work, all those types of things.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
So there you go.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
I was kind of torn as to whether or not
we should break down all the updated information on the fires.
I have it in front of me, but with an
update coming in less than a hour, we'll leave it
for the officials to give us the most recent update.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
But if you're.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
Someone who's been evacuated, or you have concerned about how
we're getting the information and the timeliness of the information
or the timeliness of getting an alert on your phone,
those types of things were one hundred percent up for
those conversations.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Obviously, this morning, the rn.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
C are looking for information to they're gont to speak
with the woman who was spotted leaving the area where
the Patties Pond fire began. Okay, the woman was said
to be driving a black suv headed east end the
Transcanted Highway. If you have any information, please con't the
iron Cy directly. They're also looking for camera footage, whether
it be doorbell cam, dash cam or cell phone cam,
(08:41):
whatever the case may be, all the area from Peacekeeper's
Way and the tch and Patty's Pond between ten am
a ten thirty am and noon yesterday, So please do indeed,
if you have any information that can be helpful, please
share it. And we look, there's a bunch of brush
fires here in town last night. How these are happening,
I don't know, But it's even as fundamental as people
(09:04):
just kind of be a little bit more aware of
what you're doing, including your cigarette bolts, and including the
folks who may indeed be starting these fires on purpose.
If that's the case, and it very well might be.
Is let's hope that they're found, arrested, prosecuted. You know
the rest of it, all right, anything on that front
you want to take on, we can do it. So
not only the Canada Summer Games, but just for travel
(09:26):
in general in the country could be interrupted this weekend
if you've booked passage on Air Canada. So strike notice
has been given by QP, they can indeed go on strike.
That's ten thousand workers who are Air Canada flight attendants.
They can go on strike at Saturday at twelve to
fifty eight am Eastern Standard time. As a result, Air
Canada issued a notice of lockouts starting at one thirty
(09:47):
am Eastern Standard time on Saturday as well. They've been
at the table since March. Air Canada, of course, will
tout just how generous their offer is. The union that's
QP representing the light of ten and says it's nowhere
near close enough. They talk about keeping up with inflation,
what have you. You can get in on one side
or the other. But Air Canada does indeed have relationships
(10:09):
with other carriers that they might be able to help
you book passage, But no way everybody's going to be
accommodated if when this strike happens, and it really feels
like it's coming this weekend, So yes, it's going to
certainly potentially compromise the turnaround day for athletes who are
leaving and people who are coming to the province of
compete in the games. And yes, for people traveling for
business or pleasure or any reason under the sun. If
(10:32):
you have Air Canada flights booked for this weekend, you
can go ahead and probably get in touch with the
carrier and maybe you can see if you can get.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Your passage changed.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
So they said, any pastor book to travel between August
fifteenth and the eighteenth can change their flight if desire,
provided there was purchased no later in August thirteenth.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
The airline is also going to allow.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
These pastors to change their flights for free to another
date between the twenty first of August and September the twelfth.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
So very likely.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
An Air Canada strike coming this weekend not ideal and
it's too bad that you know, there's smoke everywhere. Dave
Widiams talking about being out a baseball game in Mount
Pearl last night and by the end of the game
he could taste it. People's eyes were watering. It was uncomfortable.
Just imagine being even closer to these fires. Too bad
because tonight is the peak for the perseed meteor showers.
(11:19):
We've kind of talked about that over the years on
this program. Now with the moon eighty five percent illuminated
and all the haze and the smoke and the like,
might not get a chance to see it.
Speaker 3 (11:28):
But there you go, a couple of quickies before we
get to you.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
So we're told now the procedure scheduled for today at
the Health Sciences the Jane Way Saint Clair's have been
postponed due to staffing levels. So you are going to
be contacted by the health authority. All elective day surgery
scheduled for today postponed again reduced staffing levels, and they
say it's a result of evactuation orders and the LARTs that.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
Are currently in effect.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
There are no impact on emergency services, outpatient services, blood collection, imaging,
or any community based appointments at this time. When talking
about staffing, you know, I got a couple of emails,
I suppose in reaction to that particular news story or
they heard it on the news cast, is where are
we in transferring credentials? So I've mentioned this a few times,
(12:14):
and I don't know why we haven't heard similar commentary
coming from our government. In British Columbia, they are actively
and aggressively recruiting healthcare professionals, especially registered nurses. They're fast
tracking credentials. By the time you get to that province,
you're going to be able to go right to work.
We know that based on some of the regulations and
the rules of the governing body bodies in this case,
(12:36):
like the colleges colleges for physicians and surgeons and nurses
and the rest.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Where are we on that front?
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Because I know personal stories and I've spoken directly with
people who are healthcare pros who have been here for
quite a long time trying to get through credentials approved.
I mean, they've got the training right, they have the experience.
We're not talking about coming from the third world with
dubious credentials. We're talking about doctors and nurses and other
healthcare pros. Ireland, Dubai, Saudi Arabia. I mean, they've gone
(13:05):
to accredited medical schools, so where are we In addition
to that, I've said this a few times, I'm going
to stick with it. If we're going to spend the
money to open up an office in Boston, which I
don't think is a bad idea, but it's strictly for
economic terms, you know, partnerships and opening markets and all
the rest of it. We really should be adding academics
and healthcare pros to that recruitment and that partnership effort
(13:26):
from Boston, Massachusetts.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
What do you think?
Speaker 5 (13:30):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (13:30):
And on that front, I've popped out artificial intelligence a
fair number of times here on the show, talk about
some of the upside and some of the downside. I
wonder if doctors in this province will adopt an application
of artificial intelligence that doctors are using in mainland Canada
in some areas Ontario, Quebec. And it's about transcribing consultations
(13:50):
and medical appointments with their patients. So they get permission
from the patient, they turn on a recording, then they
use this particular artificial intelligence software to transcribe produce medical notes.
It saves the hours every single day and what's the
consequence of that they get to see more patients every
single day. So I know it's being utilized at Memorial University.
We're one of the leaders in artificial intelligence research at
(14:12):
this moment. But how are we adopting it for the
beneficial avenues as opposed to some of the nefarious applications
of artificial intelligence?
Speaker 3 (14:21):
All right? Two more?
Speaker 2 (14:24):
All right, aquaculture. I continue to get some pretty frosty
emails from some folks who I think I've misinterpreted what
I've said about aquaculture but lost hand by So we're
told by the industry that there were two mass mortality
events last month, and they point the finger of blame
at warm water and sea lives. My comment that I'll
reiterate this morning is if that's the case, and I
(14:47):
have no reason not to believe them, so warm water
sea lives both are probably only going to get more
stubborn and worse. Certainly, the temperature of the water is
not going to go back and start to cool all
of a sudden. So my comment was, if that's the case,
then what is future expansion of aquaculture sites in the
open pens in this problems look like? Because they're not
(15:09):
going to set themselves up for a financial disaster environmental
disaster at the same time, So I wonder what the
future holds on that front. There are people who are
pushing back out on the province of South Coast, residents
of Burgio and Ramia. They're talking about expanding salmon farms
on the south coast and they are in favor of
and there's lots of controversy on this one about the
(15:31):
proposed creation of a marine conservation area. So people are
distinctly on one side or the other on this particular front.
You know the economic shot in the airm that has
come to town with aquaculture Israel. Environmental concerns are real,
the mass mortality events are real.
Speaker 3 (15:47):
So I think we have.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
A conversation at some point lined up today with Dwan Street,
the president of the FFAW, want to talk about the
macro related issues and another to talk about this marine
conservation area. I don't know if I fully understand it,
but there's lots of activity that will still be allowed
to take place in a marine conservation area, which of
(16:08):
course will be managed by Parks Canada. And it's different
from other mechanisms out there, like a Marine Protected Area.
Those follow under the Canada's Oceans Act, and we have
three Eesport, Gilbert Bay and the Lawn Channel. So there
are fishing concerns, but if you ask folks who understand
the national Conservation Area, most of that fishing can continue
(16:29):
now no bottom traveling, which would absolutely compromise the scollop fishery.
So we'll talk about that with Dwan Street and the
macrorelated matter. I got a note from her yesterday she'd
like to expand on it, so we can do exactly
that today. We're on Twitter or VOSM openline follows there.
Email addresses open onnafosim dot com. When we come back,
let's have a great show as she's got a couple
of questions about people who are being evacuated. Melanie has
(16:51):
been evacuated, and then we're going to talk about whatever
you want to talk about. Don't go away, Welcome back
to the show.
Speaker 3 (16:55):
Let's begin this morning online number two. Good morning, Melanie,
you're on the air.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
Pat Colin from Holy Rood. I called yesterday but they
ran out of time, so they called me back this morning.
And I feel like I'd be remiss if I didn't
say that I was the first home caller and a
longtime listener.
Speaker 7 (17:13):
Like lots of.
Speaker 6 (17:14):
People, I was raised on open line in the kitchen
of my grandmother for years and years, and this week
I was back in that same kitchen when we evacuated
from holy Rood. So we were lucky to have family
in the Riverhead Harbor Grase Carbon Air area, and we
went to that area right away. You know, it was
(17:34):
a pretty uneventul evacuation on air part. We had a
little heads up the day before in holy Rood when
a larger order had got out and then it was
sort of rescinded and a smaller area evacuated, and our
area we were on alert. My sister had shared some
really useful information based on her experiences during the fires
(17:55):
in Fort McMurray, so we had a great heads up
on some things to have ready. We had arrangements made
four people in pets, and I know that so many
who were evacuated from the North Shore weren't as fortunate
to have that same time to adequately prepare. So you know,
how fortunate we were is really not last summer. And
(18:15):
then the idea of even though I haven't lived there
for a very long time, I could leave my home
in Hollywood and I had a place to call home.
During that time, I wanted for nothing during the evacuation,
you know, all the comforts of home were there. There
were so many people offering to help. But then we
were also able to see the good that was being
(18:37):
done for all the evacuees from the North Shore. You know,
I have family cousins and things of my parents who
were in that area, and to see the good that
was done for them and to hear about all the
good that was being done. But then yesterday I had
a friend reach out to me and she said, you know,
(18:59):
your posts at your sharing online, whether it was in
advance of preparing or your post about like what home
really is once you returned home, we're really uplifting and
helped through this situation. But she said, you know, can
you do you have any words left that you can
respond to some of the posts coming out of the
(19:20):
area today. And it was early in the morning, you know,
I hadn't really had a browse of social media, and
she shared a couple of posts with me and just
to see the sort of comments about the government's response,
and you know, there was the five hundred dollars announcement
(19:41):
for five hundred dollars in relief payment for evacuees, and
that's the start, and we don't know what's to come yet.
But to see comments to say that our government isn't
taking care of our own and that if people were
coming from other countries or were immigrants or refugees, they'd
be better looked after than the evacuees, I really don't
(20:01):
think those type comments were helpful in a situation like this.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
They're absolutely enough.
Speaker 2 (20:10):
You know, it's a shame we've arrived at this point
in time, but we all have to be pretty careful
and where we get our information and verifiable information and
folks who are I guess it's just part and parcel
with that social media high when the endorphins start flying
because people chime in on your post or they give
you a like or a retweet or what have you,
and you're purposonally stirring the pot when so many people
(20:32):
like yourself evacuated from your home, so many people who
are fighting the fires, who know what they're doing and
doing their very very best, and yet so many people
out there just can't.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
See the forest through the trees. That's poor choice of words.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
And they just purposefully are putting up bogus stuff just
to get people riled up.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
I guess I understand it, but I think it's.
Speaker 6 (20:51):
Ridiculous and Patty, that's you know, a couple of the
major posts that were made that there was a lot
of response to and enough a lot of people in agreement.
You know, you can say something right now and you
can take that post down after, but it's out there,
and I don't think that that mindset goes away. I
(21:11):
think it just hides. And you know, our government helps
immigrants and refugees and they absolutely should continue to do so,
and we help others so that in turn, when we
need help it might be there for us. Are those
same nations that we're helping going to help us obviously
if they can support their own citizens at this time?
Speaker 8 (21:31):
No, But the.
Speaker 6 (21:33):
Ukrainian community I saw yesterday have posted all sorts of
links to fundraisers and ways that they can give back
to our community right now. But we don't give so
that we can receive. We just hope that when we
have a kal that is going to be answered. So
I'd just like to say to those people who are
making those comments and they're speaking without thinking. I hear
(21:54):
your frustration, and I know your concern for the people
are affected, but it's really heartbreaking to see those comments
single out individuals and the divisions, the comments like that.
It only makes us weaker right now. Because fire and
fear they don't check your passport. But compassion shouldn't die either,
(22:15):
And so unity in this is going to come from
standing shoulder to shoulder no matter where we're from, because
there are immigrant families on that North Shore who are
losing their homes, the same as families whose hands have
worked at soil and fish those waters for generations. There's
immigrant families displaced throughout our region, and many of them
don't have the support of family and friends to see
them through the toughest of days. So people can question
(22:38):
the government response, but I can wholeheartedly tell you, while
I was evacuated, I'm a worrier, Patty. I didn't worry
because this wasn't a situation that I had the knowledge
or expertise to do anything in. I could only look
out for my people, my pets, and that was it.
The rest of it. I had no control over. You know,
(23:01):
if my home burnt, stuff is stuff and I'd have
to come up with a plan, but I couldn't question
or say I'd do it better when I don't have
the knowledge to do it. So, you know, if people
want to question it, if people want to make comments,
just remember that people are going to remember those comments
(23:22):
you made long after this ends. And you know, stots
and prayers can't pay fires, but they can do a
lot more for people in this situation than hate and vitriol.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Bra Vo here here, you know, we've been through a
very difficult stretch of years and everyone knows what I'm
getting at. But there's always an opportunity to take a
deep breath before you type something, take a deep breath
before you say something, because to not have the mindset
I'm the folks who are actually evacuated and fighting fires
(23:52):
and for folks who are helping out on any front.
That's kind of where I try to start my thoughts
on these things. I've questioned the water bomber issue, and
I've you know, try to do it in realistic fashion
here and talking about you know, potential additional helpful solutions
or complimentary features of infrastructure into the future. But I mean,
you and Iron are going to be able to stop
people from.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
Behaving the way they do. It's really unfortunate.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Some of the maybes is pent up frustration from over
the years, and we can always question how people respond,
whether it be government or otherwise. But there's a there's
a way to do it that can be thoughtful and
meaningful versus just outrageous and outlandish.
Speaker 9 (24:29):
Absolutely, Patty, Absolutely, Melanie's good to have you on the show.
Speaker 2 (24:32):
I appreciate your time and hopefully your property will be okay,
and I really appreciate the attitude and before you making
time for the program this.
Speaker 6 (24:40):
Morning, we're back in there.
Speaker 10 (24:42):
We're back.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Oh good, right right, yeah.
Speaker 6 (24:45):
We're you know, we're ready to support anyone that we
can support during this Good for you.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
Appreciate your time. Me only stay in touch. Thank you,
You're welcome.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
Bye bye, he goes God, I want to kick it
off here this morning. A couple of quick notes. This
is about New flinanal or Hydro. So there was a report,
of course on Facebook about a Hydro insulator that was
apparently left on the ground, potentially causing the Patty's pomp fire.
This is from Hydro. First, Hydro does not disposed of
insulators in that way, it's not left on the ground.
(25:13):
The type of damage can be from whether be lightning struck,
severe weather, vandalism, arson, whatever the case may be. Once
this insulator was ports or Hydro last Thursday, the utility
attendant of the issue was safety picked up the same day. Further,
following these types of weather events or some type of
power outage, they do aerial surveillance line patrols as part
of the measures to monitors of the lines and of
course rectify the situation for safety.
Speaker 3 (25:36):
Good.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
If insulators or any other damage equipments found anywhere in
and around our structures, it is safely addressed. That said,
if a member of the public sees something falling such
as this, we asked that they reached out to us
for assistance. So it's just some clarification from Hydro. Also,
this an email that comes in from the Saint John's
Archdiocese Incorporated Cemetery Operations.
Speaker 3 (25:55):
Okay, due to current.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Dry conditions combined with extreme heat, the Saint John's arch
Isis Incorporated Cemetery Operations kindly ask all families to any
glass objects, ornaments, vases, et cetera from the plots immediately
at Holy Sepulcher Mount Carmel, Belvidere, Kilbride Cemetery and the
Gate of Heaven Cemetery as they pose a potential risk.
Thank you for your cooperation. So those signs have been
posted at the.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
Entrances as well.
Speaker 2 (26:18):
But if you have glass ornaments and vases on a
loved one's plot at the aforementioned cemeteries, you've been asked
to remove them. Let's go and take a break when
we come back. Actually has a couple of questions about
evacuation took away. Welcome back to the show. Let's go
to line number one. Good morning, Ashley, you're on the air.
Speaker 11 (26:35):
Good morning, darln.
Speaker 3 (26:36):
How are you okay? Thank you? How about you?
Speaker 11 (26:39):
Well, I'm a little bit nervous. That's why I'm calling
and to just find out some information if I could. Okay,
I know only I'm over on Tour Bay Road and
the fire is not close. But when they said yesterday
or the day before that parts of Saint John's need
(26:59):
to be as iate it, you know, it made me scared.
So what I what I need to know is if
it so happens that we have to evacuate, where there's
Onny Olive and I and our two cats. We don't
have a car, we don't have friends with the place
(27:21):
to go, like maybe a cabin or something. Where exactly
would we go to and how would we get there?
Because we would have our belongings in that I don't
have money to take a cab to someplace, you know,
and exactly where would I go?
Speaker 3 (27:42):
Fair Enough? First off, hopefully you're not too scared.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
I understand the worry because it's a troubling situation. Completely
understand where you come from. But I hope you can
find a way to not be so worried that it
consumes you. Number two, there's no firm plan for any
real evacuation, euation alert or order in the city as
of yet. But the best thing that you can do
is to take this particular number down because the Canadian
(28:07):
Red Cross is really doing a lot of the heavy
lifting here, as is the Salvation Army. So I'm going
to give you a toll free phone number for the
Canadian Red Cross so you can have it on hand.
Because if anybody's accommodation is impacted, you can work with
the Canadian Red Cross to find a place like for
Instant and the Conception Bay North Carbonair at the Carbonair
Academy is playing a role as an emergency shelter. So
(28:28):
I'm going to give you the number for the Canadian
Red Cross so you have it right there to tip
your fingers, so if and when you need that information,
they'll be able to give it to you.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
How's that Okay?
Speaker 11 (28:38):
That sounds wonderful. Just wondering though, something like why do
we not have an evacuation plan?
Speaker 2 (28:50):
Look, I don't even know exactly what the evacuation plan
would look like when we talk about the city.
Speaker 3 (28:54):
Of Saint John's.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
I mean, it's one thing when we talk about twenty
thousand residents that are jeopardy being evacuated outside of the
city and close by the city, but we're talking about
like over one hundred thousand people in town. So a
plan of that magnitude is going to be extremely difficult.
There's going to be priorities for seniors, priorities for people
with disabilities, and I don't even know if anyone's got
a carefully calculated plan for said massive evacuation. But the
(29:18):
Canadian Red Cross will be the go to for helping
people like yourself. You call them and they've told us
anybody who's impacted by their accommodations and evacuations.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
They will coordinate every opportunity to try to help you.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
You know, for people who have family or friends that
are close by, that's helpful, but not everybody does, and
like yourself, not everybody has a car either. So do
you have a pen of paper handy so I can
give you the number?
Speaker 12 (29:40):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (29:41):
Okay, got that? So it's one eight hundred.
Speaker 5 (29:44):
One eight hundred eight six three.
Speaker 11 (29:47):
Eight sixty three six' five.
Speaker 1 (29:52):
Five eight two eight.
Speaker 11 (29:55):
Two CAN i ask one more?
Speaker 5 (29:57):
Question sure you.
Speaker 11 (29:58):
Can, well she has got to do with our two.
Cats we don't have. Carriers just wondering if maybe somebody,
somewhere if it comes down to, it might have one
big carrier that we could use to put our cats.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
In i'm sure people DO i know, that you, know
Like Beagle pause has found foster homes for some eight
beagles that have been impacted by. Evacuations and put it this, way,
actually if anything like this actually comes to Passing Saint
john's and fingers, crossed we don't have to face evacuation
alerts or. Orders if you get back to, Me i'll
get you a cat, carrier all, right.
Speaker 11 (30:36):
Mo, HONEY i want to thank you so, Much.
Speaker 5 (30:38):
Patty it's my.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
Pleasure you take good. Care say load dollar for.
Speaker 5 (30:40):
Me, okay bye, bye take good care bye.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
Bye.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
Yeah you, know we try to make sure that it's not.
Fair it's just awareness and preparation and understanding what might.
Happen so hopefully actually's gonna be. Okay let's get a
bit of good news apparently online number Three walter you
around the, Air, Hi.
Speaker 5 (30:58):
Patty how are?
Speaker 3 (30:59):
You how about?
Speaker 13 (31:00):
You, yeah so, far so. GOOD i live on the
south side Of Harbor grace and we've been watching the,
fires the big fires that went In Nick kingston And
Saint john's and it put you a bit on. Edge
and yesterday around one thirty we got news that there
was a fire on a hill In Spaniards bay and
that sort.
Speaker 5 (31:16):
Of spooked us.
Speaker 3 (31:19):
Right.
Speaker 13 (31:19):
Away we saw the pictures of it and that was
kind of close for. Comfort just at about that same,
time two helicopters flew over my home with trailing the
bags underneath the water bags heading Towards Spaniards bay and
a water, bomber and, well, well we, Figured, god this
has been taken care, of and it definitely. Was we
(31:42):
heard no news for about the next two, hours AND
i decided to drive over and have a look for.
Myself not That i'm a. RUBBERNECKER i just wanted to
find out, information viable. Information AS i got near the
FIRE i seen a couple of, firemen friends THAT i,
knew AND i pulled them over AND i was talking to.
Them he, said we have it arrested and under. Control
(32:03):
AND i got to tell, you these guys deserve so
much that we can give. THEM i understand that within
a half hour there was three water bombers over the
site And Bay Roberts Fire department had a vehicle There
Harbor grace And Spaniards bay, obviously and they just had
(32:23):
it totally under. Control AND i got to tell, YOU
i was so impressed that just the, speed the professionalism
and cooperative, ness if you want to call it, that
that they used to get this taken care. Of and
that's ALL i was calling, for just to give them
a hearty thank. YOU i called my wife AND i
told her what the situation, was AND i, said, Look
(32:44):
i'm going to the beer store And i'm going to
buy ten cases of beer and drop it off at
the fire. Hall and she, said, no, no that wouldn't
be such a good, idea SO i decided not that
MIGHT i hinder their, job but, ANYHOW i just wanted
to call and formally say thank, you as these guys
did one hell of a good.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
Job, yeah Good, Anue.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
WALTER i saw those pictures as, well and they tended
to it to its. SWEET i, mean the coordination and
the collaboration and the precision that we see is, remarkable
AND i could never say enough to thank them the
way they deserve for what they're doing out. There so
good on you for doing exactly this this, Morning.
Speaker 13 (33:18):
Walter no, Problem, patty glad to do.
Speaker 3 (33:21):
It take good care of.
Speaker 5 (33:22):
Yourself thanks you, Too bye bye.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Bye there you. Go all, right let's go on line For.
Craig you' around the.
Speaker 5 (33:28):
Air good, Morning.
Speaker 14 (33:31):
Patty how are you?
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Okay thank? You how about?
Speaker 15 (33:32):
You, No, Patty i'm just coming on regard of the
fire situation where People i'm here round to your and.
Peninsula there was a crowd cut over In Frenchman's cove
actually that had a fire gome by the fire department
and the police were, involved but they were out of,
province so there was no charges filed because they were
(33:55):
out of. Province SO i don't understand if your cat
having a far that you're going to be. Charged but
if you're at a, province it seems like you can
do what you look.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
Here so what does that? Mean so someone started to
fire and then left the, PROVINCE i just want to follow.
Speaker 15 (34:09):
Along, no, no they.
Speaker 14 (34:11):
Did they were from out of.
Speaker 15 (34:12):
PROVINCE i guess still were visiting or, whatever and they
had a. Fire the fire department showed up From Frenchman's,
cold put the fire, out contained the people that was
having the.
Speaker 5 (34:22):
Fire the police showed up and there was nothing said
to them because they were at a.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
Province SO i guess they're using ignorance as a defense
right that they didn't.
Speaker 5 (34:30):
Know, well that's What i'm.
Speaker 15 (34:32):
Assuming BUT i, mean if people are having, fires whether
you're at a province or you're From newfoundland or wherever
you're from on this, island the premier has.
Speaker 5 (34:43):
Put out there that you will be CHARGED x amount of.
Speaker 15 (34:47):
Dollars if you cannot afford to pay the, fine you're
going to go to.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
Jail.
Speaker 15 (34:51):
Yep so that's going to cause the province more money
to put somebody in, jail because As i've SEEN i looked,
up it cost the province three hundred and three dollars
per day to have somebody, carcerated and the penitentiary so
for three hundred and sixty five, days is going to
cast the province one hundred and ten thousand dollars vers
(35:13):
seventy five thousand dollars.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
Fine so why don't the province if you.
Speaker 15 (35:16):
Can't afford to pay the, fine danish their.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
Wages i'm sure that'll be part of it into the.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
FUTURE i got a funny feeling, Anyway first defense went
from seventy five dollars to fifty thousand dollars and now
maximum charges up to one hundred and fifty thousand dollars
and a year in the. Clink look doesn't matter where you're.
From if you've been in the province for any number
of days to not have heard about the, fireban to
not have heard the stories of all the wildfires burning
out of control around the, province then you're either brain
(35:44):
dead or whatever the case may. Be so ignorance has
never been a defense in a, Court so from my,
perspective just even walking, around if you can hear the
grass crunching under your, feet you probably shouldn't start a.
Fire LIKE i don't know why it takes, anybody you,
know to have to go to the extent that the
province Has AND i don't know if they're doing the
right thing is the wrong. Thing i'm sure they're just
trying to make sure that people think twice before they
(36:05):
go ahead and have a, fire even though they're. NOT i,
mean there was three or four brush fires In Saint
chile's last.
Speaker 15 (36:09):
NIGHT i see that And facebook AND. VOCM i READ
vocm every morning AND i listen to your show every.
Speaker 12 (36:18):
Day BUT i mean we're going to have to do
catch somebody and prove a point to find them or,
something BECAUSE i, mean this is getting out of. CONTROL i,
mean people are just they're Not they get no common,
seams no.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
And you, know thumbing your nose at the government is
all fine and. Dandy but we can protest and question and.
Criticize but the fact of the matter is whether or
not you Think John hogan's a good, person bad, person
whether or not think the government's doing a good or bad.
Job the fact of the matter is there's a lot
of fires and things are. Dry it's just the whole
problems is like. Kindling so let's just not start a.
(36:55):
FIRE i don't even know how to say it any
more fundamental than. That don't start a fire.
Speaker 12 (36:58):
The end you, well Our amy's, time fire department design
the move here now so there could be a fire
somewhere here on the bumpinans fingers.
Speaker 2 (37:07):
Crossed that's not the. CASE i appreciate the. Times pardon all,
right thank, You, PATTY i appreciate. It take care of,
You bye.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Bye quick.
Speaker 2 (37:15):

Cough so, ANYWAY i was talking To todd O'Brien here
broadcast three weeks ago and he said he WANTED i
always wonder why it would still close after four. Years
so Joege mr closed it four years ago for. Years
so since that time we haven't heard anything about that
(38:14):
since then on the golf, course you know it's so
it's not. Years so there was.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
Ernest we've got we've got a terrible. Connection can you
just shift yourself around a few feets if we can
clear this.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
Up a little?
Speaker 4 (38:36):
Bit?
Speaker 5 (38:37):
Okay, sure any?
Speaker 3 (38:38):
Better, yeah that's, better go, ahead okay and you're.
Speaker 5 (38:41):
Uh, anyway the next day That todd got The minister
Of fisheries, On Joanne thompson on to talk about the golf.
Cords so, anyway he asked her why there is in
the golf commercial fishery in the golf Of Saint mark's
cod fishery that just said the stops was not in?
Shape DO i have a commercial cod? Fishery when we
(39:03):
were for three weeks.
Speaker 12 (39:12):
Last, Year.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
Dave And, Greg i'm going to Put ernest on, hole
see if we can't get a clearer, connection Because i'd
like to hear what the man has to. Say so
let's do. That, dave can you speak With ernest and
see if we can't get a better connection so we
can hear what you have to. Say because remember the
golf cod moratorium was set back In july of twenty twenty,
two and at that time it was announced as a
(39:36):
one year. Moratorium at the, time the stock was obviously
in a critical. Situation they use words like a very dire.
Situation But ernest is. Right all this time, LATER i
don't even know If i've seen updated the strength of
the spawning biomass of golf. Cod we talk a lot
about northern, cod but of course there's been a long
reliance on the golf cod for inshore harvesers on The
(39:57):
west coast as. Well so, yeah SE i can get
some updated info For ernest as we proceed. Here when
we come, back hopefully we get a clarophone, line because
it's nothing worse than not being able to hear a
caller was taking the time to join us here live
on the.

cross if and when there is a evact equation alert
or an order here in the, CITY i HOPE i
didn't say there's no actual, plan because just because we
don't know what a plan may or may not be
doesn't mean there isn't a plan being worked out and
are potentially. Finalized but just imagine the evacuation of the magnitude
that would include the entirety or even portions of the
City Saint. John's SO i don't know if there are
(41:19):
indeed any, plans BUT i can only hope that plans
are being worked towards because you never.
Speaker 3 (41:25):
Know preparation is the key.
Speaker 2 (41:26):
Here the best part about trying to consider preparations is
the worst case. Scenario you, know if everything goes, well
then there's nothing worry. About but we know that the
fires are burning hot and there's many burning out of,
control and we'll talk about that right after the. Break
let's go ahead and take the. Newscast then we'll take
the news conference that we're coming back to.

with two p's DOT. Ca for any mental health services
that are. Required provincial roads and highways updates go TO
nl five to one, One Cross Emergency services nine to one,
one and if you are part of the, evacuees it
is very important course to, register whether you go to
a center that has been set up or. Not you
can go to The Canadian Red cross to register for
(49:09):
all of. THAT i do see the premium now walking
in to the microphones here now along with the officials
that are going to join him for this briefing. Today
so we are going to take you live The Confederation
building now for an update on the wildfire situation here
In newfoundland And labrador once they get the mics. Going
did you bring you the very latest here on THE
vocm radio. Network it looks like they are pretty much
(49:32):
ready to, go and then we will take you live.
There so, again the latest update that had we have
A vocm dot com came in for about nine thirty
So i'm not sure how much would probably change from
that at this, point but we are expecting now to
go live To John hogan as he is set to
take to the microphone and kick off today's update on
wildfire's here In newfoundland And. Labrador looks like he's just
(49:55):
getting some questions answered before he takes to the microphone.
Here all, right we're just awaiting him to start. Speaking
looks like he's getting some last minute. Information all, right
looks like we're going my life just the Waiting John
(50:26):
hogan to begin the press conference here this morning to
update on the new plant and labor or Wildfire situation's
like you're just getting some last minute things put. Together of,
course number of wildfires active now in the, Province Patty's,
Pond kingston fire at The Central fires top of. Mind
(50:47):
just getting some last minute preparations set up here now
and then we'll be taking you a lot at The
Confederation building to bring the very latest from the province's efforts.
Here a bit, delayed of, course this was to start
at ten, o'clock but nine after ten now there might
(51:08):
be a bit of an issue happening there with maybe
getting someone connected to this press. Conference so we're just
going to keep bringing you some updates here as vo
wait for them to go. Live but they're set to
begin speaking here, momentary so it looks like they're waiting
for the go ahead. Here once, again just out of
the abundance of, CAUTION i will Reiterate Canada Games Host
society making some sports venue, changes all listed through vocum dot.
(51:30):
Com it Includes Little cross moving From perilanes to THE
Df Burns arena And beats volleyball and sailing being postponed.
Entirely baseball games is A Team Guju Sports complex In
Mount pearl had been moved To Saint pats and the
soccer games out IN cbs had been moved to The
Florida Sports complex In Saint john's And King George fifth
for the remainder Of week one. Competition if you're a
(51:50):
volunteer of The Canada, games of course you will be
contacted directly for any issues regarding your shifts as a.
Volunteer with The Canada games still waiting for The premier starts.
Speaking he is in placed there At Confederation, building but
it looks like there is a bit of a delay
in getting this going here From Confederation. Billing so we're
just waiting for them to start speaking and bringing the
(52:11):
very latest information here to you on the wildfires and
you flying the labrador might be a bit of a
sound issue. Here possibly it looks like he's about to
speak but stops short every. Time the latest information that
they provided about nine third of this, morning of, course
is no growth overnights In Patty's pond, fire which was,
Good Mark, lawler fire duty officer Tells Vocum news suppression
(52:33):
efforts helped us all with that. Growth, however the fire
is about two hundred and fifty meters from The Transcandada.
Highway That Patty's pond fire remains very hot and, smoky
about over two hundred hectares in size and unfortunately evacuation
of course last night of section Of paradise Three Elym
pond area late yesterday afternoon and the south side Of
Tops road Up.
Speaker 16 (52:52):
Parada and everyone thanks coming again this, Morning Minister, Haggee
Minister dempster joining us virtually today and here with me
Is Jamie chipping, Again Deputy minister Of forestry And Blair
adams from the department is online there as. Well continues
to be a heavy couple of weeks and heavy days
as we continue to work through this, situation and we
(53:13):
know those who have been who have been directly impacted
by wildfires near their communities continue to feel a lot
of stress and, worry in particular those who have lost
their homes and those who are unsure if their homes
are still. Standing and as this continues to get worse
over the last few, days it's very clear that All
newfoundlanders and laboratorians level of anxiety continues to. Rise but
(53:35):
of COURSE i want to thank everybody who's doing tremendous,
work dangerous work as we continue to look at all
options to help suppress these wildfires and look at situations
where we may need to continue to provide evacuation alerts
or evacuation orders throughout the. Province the good news this
morning is there are no further evacuation alerts and no evacuation,
(53:57):
orders so everything that was in place yesterday remains the
same situation this. Morning but of, course never mind, everybody
especially those in evacuation alert, areas to continually monitor government
channels in the event that that does change to an.
Order last NIGHT i had a call With Prime Minister Mark.
Conny very much appreciated him taking the time to call.
(54:18):
Me he was very much up to speed on the
situation here on the, island BUT i did take the
time to just further describe the geography of what we're facing,
here the fact that fires are not only in central
AND A, cbn but now have moved obviously towards the urban.
Center and again he's very clear that it's a very
(54:39):
serious situation and he offered any and all help that
The canadian government can. Do he committed to making sure
that everything that we had asked for we have, received
which is true to, date and as we continue to
expand what we feel we need here on the, ground
he's committed to providing us with, that most notably what
the federal government could help us with because as we've,
(54:59):
discus they don't have water, bombers they don't have assets
that can help fire. Suppression but they have and they
will continue to provide more support for logistics as we
look at setting up further evacuation centers in the event it's,
needed firefighters support and transportation, support which includes transportation to
and from the sites and transportation for firefighters as. Well
(55:20):
another piece of good, news we have pure sorry Procured
SIKORSKI s ninety Two raptor helicopter From alberta that is
at the cost of about two point one million. DOLLARS
i believe that has the capacity of thirteen to fourteen
hundred gallons right.
Speaker 17 (55:37):
There and that's actually larer treader than, that.
Speaker 16 (55:40):
Okay so that is obviously good. News that'll be here
in the next coming days as. Well that will certainly
help our suppression. Efforts The Kingston fire is now just
over sixty four hundred hectors and it did experience some
growth on the northern. Boundary as everybody, knows it was
high temperatures and windy, yesterday which does create extreme fire.
(56:01):
Behavior the construction of the fuel breaks in the north
progressed greatly yesterday thanks to efforts from everyone in the.
Community another piece of good news is that we actually
have more heavy equipment there on site than we can,
use so thanks to everybody who's pitched in to help
with those fire. Breaks ground crews continue to work the
southern edge yesterday with air support and our incident management
(56:24):
team this morning currently assessing the fire behavior there and
will make a plan to action that, site which will
include air support and ground. Support the location of the
head of the fire on The kingston fire is just
Below Northern. Bay there will be air assets on site there,
today including, helicopters and we're confident they can return to
(56:45):
the south side of that, fire The Martin lake. Fire
this morning's aerial assessment confirmed the fire has not Crossed
route three sixty and it remains on the east side
Of Great Rattling. River it's about three hundred four hundred
meters west of The Beta Spare. HIGHWAY i think we
(57:05):
can confidently say that the Road Beta Spare highway will
remain closed throughout the. Day the fire is now approximately
eight hundred hectors and last night's activity was concentrated within
the updated. Boundary the weather conditions today include persistent south
the southwest, winds temperatures getting up to thirty two degrees
(57:26):
and an extreme of course fire weather index and that
part of the province throughout the whole province really and these,
conditions combined with an active fire, edge are likely to
result in continued fire growth. Today there will be thirty
firefighters on site, today as well as air support including four,
helicopters a Bird, dog the two aircraft From quebec and
(57:47):
three eight or two. Aircraft good news there, though as
there's no confirmed structure loss as a result of this.
Fire at this time just to focus on that particular
part of the province and individuals. There newfouland And Laborador
Health services will be contacting patients on The Cannagary plinsula
today with regards to any appointments they may, have so
please be, patient wait for that call and they'll work
(58:10):
through you with regards to your health care. Needs and
regular ferry service has returned there. Today it will be
a load and go, service so when the boat is,
full it will go and that's the service From Pool
cove To Beta Large Bay.
Speaker 3 (58:23):
Larger.
Speaker 16 (58:23):
Sorry The Patty's pond fire continues to remain very hot
and very. Smoky air suppression. Efforts if you recall yesterday
we were looking at the north and the south side
of that fire and that did help slow the growth
throughout the. Day ground crews unfortunately were pulled from the
southern edge throughout the day due to extreme fire behavior
(58:45):
on the southern. Side the wildfire is approximately two hundred
and fifty meters from the Trans Canada. Highway it did,
grow of course throughout the day yesterday on the northern,
edge which resulted in the evacuation Of Island pond, Three
Island pond area Of. Paradise the incident management team is
assessing the fire today and the construction of further fuel,
(59:06):
brakes and today's plan will be air, support ground, support
and The Saint John's Regional Fire department remains there as,
well so our six tankers will be there. Today that's
the four Newfoun line And labrador assets and two From.
Ontario yesterday one of, ours AS i, mentioned was, unserviceable
but we're able to get that back in service today
(59:27):
at some point very. Soon YESTERDAY i mentioned pending, fines
so there have been two fines issued under Our Forestry
act regulations with the new penalties that were put in.
Place one has been issued to an individual for using
an excavator in a wooded area and another has been
issued to a corporation that was doing mulching with heavy
(59:48):
equipment in an area where the fire index was. Extreme
so just to all New folanders And, labradorians you, know
this does show that these fines are in place for
a reason and that we are pursuing everybody who potentially
has violated these. Regulations and now that the finds have
two fines have been, ISSUED i really hope people understand
(01:00:09):
the seriousness of the fireban and the fire regulations and
what we're asking people to, do and if you do violate,
this we will find you and we will find, you
AND i can tell you That newfoudlanders And labradorians are
not going to be happy with people who have breached the.
Regulations while everyone is trying to keep everybody safe and
everybody is working hard and we have a finite number of,
assets we do not want additional fires here in this
(01:00:32):
province at this. TIME i also mentioned yesterday we would
consider further restrictions on off road vehicles in an effort
to help protect our. Communities and as we, know wildfires
across the country and here In newfoundland And labrador are
increasing in frequency and. Intensity so under The Forestry, act
The minister Of, Fisheries forestry And agriculture can declare an
(01:00:53):
area of forest land to be a restricted travel area
for a period of time for the purpose of reducing
the probability of a wild during period a period of
high fire. Hazard and as of right, now we simply
cannot afford any further risks giving the number of out
of control wildfires we, have the high index we, have
(01:01:14):
which will result in issues allocating our finite. Resources if
wildfires continue to arise on the island and In labrador
as of right.
Speaker 14 (01:01:23):
Now we.
Speaker 16 (01:01:24):
Don't we will continue to investigate the cause of these.
Fires we don't have evidence that any of these have
been caused by off road, vehicles but out of an
extreme abundance of, caution and given AS i, said the
finite resources we have in this province and in this,
country we will be issuing in order to declare a
province wide restriction on off road vehicle use on forested
(01:01:44):
land for the purpose of reducing the probability of a
wildfire during this high fire hazards. Season this has been
a recommendation we received from The department for The minister
to make this. Declaration it will be in place Until,
Sunday august seven, teenth twenty twenty, five and of course
we will review that decision before that time and if,
(01:02:04):
necessary we will extend. It and of course the fire
index can change day by, day and this does apply
to areas where there is a high fire, index which
does cover almost the entirety of the. Province right, now
just so everybody knows exactly what an off road vehicle,
Is it's a motorized snow vehicle which is obviously not
relevant right, now an all terrain vehicle including a side by,
(01:02:28):
side a mini, bike a dirt, bike a, trailbike a
miniature vehicle such as a dune or sport, buggy an
off road maintenance, machine and an amphibious. Vehicle so there
is a lot of. Happening there's a lot of, serious,
hard dangerous work being. DONE i can't thank the, firefighters the,
volunteers and the staff and the department throughout all the
departments for doing all the hard work to keep our community.
(01:02:50):
Safe AS i said, yesterday we will get through, This
this will end and we will be okay as long
as we listen to the advice of the, experts and
the most important, thing of course is look after, yourselves
look after your, neighbors and stay. Safe Minister, hage.
Speaker 18 (01:03:09):
Thank you very, Much.
Speaker 19 (01:03:10):
PREMIER i think it would be, helpful perhaps in the
light of, comments to elaborate a little bit.
Speaker 18 (01:03:16):
On what it means.
Speaker 19 (01:03:19):
On a data consurgency, order an alert and an evacuation.
Order if you are living in an area which is
only subject to a state of, emergency that simply means
that no one is asking you to do anything except make. Preparation, if,
(01:03:42):
however that area moves to a state of evacuation, alert
that level of risk to you and your property has increased,
significantly and you should be ready with what you need
a go bag to leave at short, notice and that
notice can be really. Short certainly an hour would be
(01:04:02):
a long time under those. Circumstances that go. Back there's
plenty of advice about what you should have there in
terms of important, documents insurance, documents, medications those kinds of,
things AND i would direct you to The government of
The newfoundland.
Speaker 18 (01:04:19):
And labrador web page to do.
Speaker 19 (01:04:22):
That, obviously if you are subject to an evacuation order
that means, leave and in the case of some, areas
there will be routes designated to do, this And i'm
thinking particularly of potential For paradise And Cbst, goalway those
(01:04:42):
kind of. Places there will be under those, circumstances a
clear signage and local law enforcement and others ground search
and rescue to help you do. That if at some
stage in the alert process you know that you're going
to have mobility, issues then The Department families has access
(01:05:02):
numbers to call to make those, arrangements AND i would
direct you to The government Of newfunland And labrador website
and Specifically families And Affordability.
Speaker 18 (01:05:12):
DEPARTMENT i think at.
Speaker 19 (01:05:15):
That stage it's also and probably now really it's also
a good time for all of us to reach out
to our insurance provider for more information about what your
policy may cover on what it may.
Speaker 18 (01:05:26):
Not many standard home.
Speaker 19 (01:05:28):
Insurance policies actually provide coverage for additional living, expenses so
if you have to have a hotel, room if you
have to pay.
Speaker 18 (01:05:35):
Gas meals and incident.
Speaker 4 (01:05:40):
And they will have criteria about what is eligible how
you would claim that for those people under a mandatory evacuation, Order.
Speaker 18 (01:05:50):
So keep your.
Speaker 19 (01:05:51):
Receipts if you are leaving as part of a mandatory
evacuation order and you have, pets take them with. You
there will not be an opportunity to go back to get.
Speaker 18 (01:06:05):
Them we have.
Speaker 19 (01:06:06):
Heard Good samaritan stories from first responders such as THE
rcmp and local Ground search And rescue who have performed pet,
rescues and for THAT i thank you as a as
a pet a person. Myself but the provision really is
(01:06:27):
you need to look after them from the get go and.
Speaker 18 (01:06:29):
Defect them with.
Speaker 19 (01:06:30):
You we have financial support the phone lines for The
Red cross have been updated in terms of their hours
of operation.
Speaker 18 (01:06:42):
Eight six five two and they're running from eight am
to Eleven.
Speaker 19 (01:06:50):
From financial, support eighteen hundred folk are registered and very
recently The Red cross started out with first chansh of
just over one hundred.
Speaker 18 (01:06:58):
Payments have been.
Speaker 19 (01:06:59):
Dispersed if you can't ring, them you can always go
in person to register at one of the, centers or
alternatively on the website at ww Dot redcross Dot. Ca
slash twenty twenty Five Newfoundland wildfires to form with some
of the themes of the. Premiere if you see something,
(01:07:20):
suspicious if you are, concerned call, it call nine to
one one and don't rely on social. Media and again
social media is not necessarily a reliable sort of. Information
there are people out there who are manipulating information and
an actual, fact lying outright to achieve their own. ENDS
(01:07:45):
i would suggest you rely on government and law enforcement.
Sources final, comment stay, safe look after, yourselves.
Speaker 18 (01:07:54):
Look after your, neighbors and be. Kind thank you very, Much.
Speaker 16 (01:07:57):
Premier thank, You Minister, Hagey Minister, Dempster.
Speaker 17 (01:08:02):
Hey thank. You good morning. EVERYONE i want to take
a couple of moments to address some of the things
that would have come to my attention through phone or email.
Yesterday as the day's we are, ON i would have
to say that yesterday was the biggest day for, me
receiving messages text a lot of, times trying to clear up.
(01:08:25):
Misinformation people growing more concerned as the fires grows into broader.
Regions So i'm just going to try and recap some
of that here. BRIEFLY a lot of misinformation that is
adding to the. Anxiety As i've said a number of,
TIMES i want to start with every region. Matters we
(01:08:45):
are not prioritizing one area over. Another we are using,
science safety and strategy in terms of the plan of.
Attack i've said up many times in the media veils
we have an expert team in, action And i've got
and to work with those folks over the last several
months and see that up close and. Personal our incident
(01:09:07):
command teams are highly trained. Professionals they use advanced, tools
data and scientific analysis to make informed decisions about where
and how we fight the. Fire sometimes that's in the,
air and sometimes that's, underground and sometimes it's, both but
always safety is. Paramount there are situations where it becomes
(01:09:30):
too dangerous to send our personnel directly into the fire
and we will never compromise the safety of our. Team
they face extreme conditions and risk every. Day our team
are working tirelessly as our MINI i know across The
avalon and, beyond AND i have a high praise all
(01:09:53):
the time for those who are working. Tirelessly we are
deeply grateful for the support from our, community from our,
partners from our. Volunteers the list of people doing good
humanitarian Work, islam just as we did with The Holy root,
fire as well As Chance harbor And Musgrave. Harbor the
(01:10:15):
distance by ear between The kingston fire and the fire
At Patty's pond it's actually less than one hundred. Kilometers
we are able to move those resources quickly as they are,
needed so we're certainly focusing on both. Simultaneously The premier
mentioned THE. ATVs we will have more information coming later
(01:10:38):
today in, print just just for clarity for people WHO
i know we'll have questions right after the media. AVAIL
i want to speak a moment in particular to people
in rural PEOPLE i represent in my own riding here
in Southern labrador and in particular Across labrador That i'm
familiar with many that are working right now in in
(01:11:01):
fish plants processing. Areas that's your only mode of. TRANSPORTATION
i know it's bery picking, season it's the time of
year when we are harvesting from the land and from the,
water AND i know that some of this is we're
asking you to make a sacrifice right, now BUT i
want to remind you this is for a window in
(01:11:22):
time when our weather indices are very high or. Extreme
we will be banning ATVs on forested roads and so
far we've had wonderful. Cooperation but as you've, seen the
fires are some days taking on a life of their,
own and The premier is continuously working with The Prime
(01:11:43):
minister and other provinces to bring in additional. Resources so we,
understand but it is only for a window in, time
and we thank you for your. Cooperation we do have
a lot Of, yesterday in, particular there was crazy information
about people SAYING i have offered to The premier of
(01:12:03):
this province all of these resources that can. Help we
were not. Aware no information came back to The premier's
office or to me as The minister of or my.
Officials it was not only, misinformation it was wrong and
so today we have set up an Email Forced fires
(01:12:25):
twenty twenty five at gov DOT nl DOT. Ca Forced
fires twenty twenty five DOT nl DOT. Ca if you
have resources that you think we can help we can
benefit from for fighting to, FIRE i would ask you
(01:12:46):
to send that information and together we will get through
this with, resilience determination and paramount care for one. Another
i'll pass it back to, you you. Premiers i'm losing my.
Voice thank, You thank, You Minister.
Speaker 3 (01:12:59):
Emi, sir any? Questions all?
Speaker 8 (01:13:01):
Right that is the live. Update we're going to cut
it there here ON. Vocm you can continue to watch
that briefing AT vocm dot com if you. Wish we
are going to take a quick time. Out it is
ten thirty. One the latest information from that briefing available
online as well right now THROUGH vocm dot, com so
you can get all that detail for yourself if you
missed any of it during the. Briefing quick little. Overview
(01:13:24):
no new evacuation, advisories off road vehicle usage band and
forested areas where the fire hazard index is. High that
is the two key things out of that that is
in place now Until, Sunday august, seventeenth at which time
it will be. Reviewed the ban on ATV's in the
fire high fire index. Areas we'll recap all that through,
THENEWS vidocm dot. Com we'll be back To Open mind
(01:13:45):
And Patty daily just after a quick commercial.
Speaker 2 (01:13:46):
Break welcome back to the. Show so some notable takeaways
from the news. Conference kind of expecting it to, happen
and now it HAS atv use or off road vehicle
use ban from operations and all forced. Areas that's certainly
not going to sit well with. Most and there was
also clarification about fire suppression efforts that had been apparently
(01:14:07):
or reportedly offered and not taken advantage. Of to be
told that that's not actually a. Thing let's dig. Into
let's go to line number. Six janet around the.
Speaker 5 (01:14:16):
Air good, Morning.
Speaker 20 (01:14:18):
Patty how are you this?
Speaker 3 (01:14:19):
Morning doing? Okay thank? You how about?
Speaker 14 (01:14:20):
You?
Speaker 20 (01:14:21):
OH a little bit anxiety going on? Today none to
say with everything that has and on the. Goal BUT
i think this was brought on a little bit more
yesterday AS i was driving home On topped the road
WHEN i saw a driver throw a cigarette thought out the.
WINDOW i was so upset that then and there Are
CALI rcmp and reported WHAT i had. SEEN i had
(01:14:45):
the license plate, number the style of the, car and
he said that he would look into. It and he,
said ask my name and he would call me back
for anything. Else it's you more information if, neat so
which he, did and much to my, surprise he couldn't
(01:15:05):
track that. Number SO i was very wondering why couldn't
this be? TRACKED i was thinking in that this was
probably a licenset was you, know probably. NOT i just
don't know why it wasn't in the. System and you
know why he couldn't track.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
IT i have no, idea but you, know at the
best of, times and even if it was plenty damp
or wet out, there just throwing a cigarette butt out
the window is ridiculous the first, place isn't. IT I,
MEAN i know that cars don't come with astrays like
they used, to but you can always have a pop
tin and you're a coffee cup holder or, whatever as
opposed to throwing them out the. Window and, now like
(01:15:47):
someone told me that they encountered someone flicking around the
cigarette but the other day in a parking, lot And buddy,
said what's the. Problem there's no forest. HERE i don't
think he's ever heard of. Wind you, know the cigarette
was not going to stay where it. Landed so there's
just a good idea to hopefully not be the personal
responsible for any size of, fire whether it be a
small brush fire like the once we experienced in the
(01:16:09):
city last night and or what we see out in
some of the larger out of control. Fires so you
would hope that people would.
Speaker 3 (01:16:14):
Just not do.
Speaker 2 (01:16:15):
That let's just be mindful of just how dry it
is out there and do WHAT i would call the right.
Speaker 20 (01:16:20):
Thing, Yeah AND, i LIKE i, SAID i, normally you,
know it just really really upset me to the point
that you, KNOW i got on my phone right away
AND i called it in because you, know this has to.
Speaker 10 (01:16:32):
STOP i, mean he's in the same.
Speaker 20 (01:16:35):
Situation she's in the same situation that we're all in right,
now the state of, emergency you, know when it comes
to putting another fire and what we already got on the.
Go so i'd just like, to you, know advise people
that you're in the same.
Speaker 5 (01:16:48):
Situation it's what we.
Speaker 20 (01:16:49):
Are don't do, that, please.
Speaker 3 (01:16:52):
Yeah please don't do. It that's a fair message to. Offer.
JANET i appreciate your time and your patience this. Morning thank.
Speaker 20 (01:16:57):
You i'd just like to say so to the firefighters
and to anyone that seems situation to be.
Speaker 3 (01:17:06):
Safe, absolutely thank, You, janet take good. Care thank, You you're.
Welcome by.
Speaker 2 (01:17:10):
Bye the remarkles to be people are still throwing cigarette bells.
Around by, BOY i don't know What i'm doing. Here
let's see, here let's see if we Get Claire line
on line umber five With Ernest. Decker, ernest you're back
on the.
Speaker 5 (01:17:22):
Air, yes good, morning.
Speaker 3 (01:17:24):
Sir welcome.
Speaker 14 (01:17:26):
Back oh thank, You, Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:17:28):
PATTY i was talking To todd O'Brien The fisher's broadcast
about three weeks ago about the golf Codfishery. Warner why
was still was still closed after four? Years, Anyway Joyce
Murray Federal minister fisher at the time she closed, it
she closed it for one. Year now we're four years
in so we all aired on talk what what the
(01:17:49):
state of the stocks is or. Whatsoever so, ANYWAY i
Asked todd O'Brien, there what do you get Down street
or The Federal Minister fisheries On we did the very
next day and uh, so, Anyway Joanne thompson come. On
she said the reason why there is no commercial fishery
in the Golf it was because the stocks was not
(01:18:10):
in good. Shape so, anyway he went on to, haster
why there is a recreational fishery if the stocks is
in that bad of. Shape, well she answered the question by,
saying we have to have a recreational fishery in the
golf because it brings in a lot of tourst. Dollars
right to, me in my, views that was not a
(01:18:32):
very good answer for it for, Her Federal minister Of, fisheries,
uh trying to rebuild stocks uh in the, golf you,
know and you know we should she should be talking
with a Conservation BUT i haven't said, That, Patty like you,
KNOW i think there is room for a commercial fishery
in the. Golf, well you, know but we only had
(01:18:53):
two hundred harvests in the golf at harveston three hundred
pounds three thousand pounds a, week so for approximately three.
Weeks so you, KNOW i don't think the stocks is
in that bad of shape Because i've been hooting about
for of, Course i've been had it for fifty five,
years AND i know what the golf, stops what they're.
LIKE i know that The sentinel fishery is doing very quite,
(01:19:16):
well which is done but ff a w so, Anyway so,
anyway SO i understand If haady that you're having Down
street come on today so to talk about mac and
other species. Whatever maybe maybe she could answer some questions
on the golf cod if you're if there's going to
(01:19:38):
be a commercial fishery in the near. FUTURE i can't
see any reason why we wouldn't be able to have
a small photo cod to, catch because you, know we
only have eight weeks a year lobster fishery in the
golf And i'm probably a week at a crab and
a week at hellimut that sums us up so for
(01:20:00):
the year or so as commercial cod would certainly help us.
Out right, now.
Speaker 2 (01:20:06):
God, boy we Are i'm happy to ask you on any.
Questions she sent me a note yesterday in reacting to
a call where someone mentions macrorel, specifically SO i guess
that's what she wants to talk. About we're happy to
talk about golf cod. Stock we're also going to talk
about the marine conservation area that's being proposed and what
that might mean for the scallop, fishery which goes away
(01:20:26):
because there'd be no bottom traveling allowed in that. Area
so we can ask all those, questions no problem at.
Speaker 5 (01:20:30):
ALL i really appreciate you if you could ask her
about the golf cod right, know you, know right now
we could be, Fishing Jo, patty we could be, fishing
but we know we're all t't we're in the golf right,
so and you, know so you, know if there's a
recreational why why shouldn't we have a small hold of?
COD a? Commercial that's all we're asking. FOR i mean
(01:20:51):
a number of our leasers is a you know in
lots and, wait lots and. All what's going on with?
This you Know foing told four Years, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
I'm happy to ask the. QUESTION i think the converse
could be asked about The northern cod when we've seen
more than doubling of the commercial toleer novel, catch but
zero change in the recreational food. Fishery so it's similar,
circumstance but the, REVERSE i would, suggest between The gulf
and The northern cod. STOCK i appreciate this. Earnest if
D one calls, Today i'll be happy to.
Speaker 5 (01:21:20):
Ask, oh thank you very. Much i'd appreciate.
Speaker 14 (01:21:23):
That my.
Speaker 2 (01:21:23):
Pleasure all the, best, goodbye before we get the breaks

Speaker 2 (01:22:31):
Uh and very quickly totally. LISTENER i do this on her.
Behalf yesterday at eleven o four a M, bella who's
a little black and white having these dog needed to go.
Speaker 3 (01:22:42):
Out the owner hooked her to.
Speaker 2 (01:22:43):
The stairs as she went back into the house to
do something like she always does, apparently and so once
she came, out the little black and white having these
Named bella was. Gone so the thought is maybe someone
unhooked the, dog which is. Unbelievable so they say the
ladies tried to look For bella raud the thrift store
our tops of the. Road Spec a said they walked
(01:23:04):
Up Moffatt's road AND i said someone possibly had seen
a car hit the dog And bella ran into the
woods behind the prench shop On. Moffat so if you're
in the area and keep your eyes out for little
black and White habanese Named. Bella so if you know
where the dog, is if you've spotted the dog anyone In,
pearlview please Call roxanne seven zero nine six nine three
(01:23:27):
four eight one two and we will try to get
that popped down to the Lost pets page on the
old crankbook Or facebook as. Well let's take a. Break
when we go, back there's a caller that's got a
concern regarding a. Plant a ceremony got canceled due to.
Wildfires no. Refund we'll have that conversation and then you.
Speaker 3 (01:23:42):
Right after, this.
Speaker 2 (01:23:46):
Welcome back to the. Show let's go to lighting number.
Six good, morning, caller are on the.
Speaker 5 (01:23:49):
Air, Hi hi, There.
Speaker 23 (01:23:54):
I'm just calling about a. Wedding we all flew in
from all over the country and supposed to be on a
golf course In Mount, pearl AND i know what the.
Wildfires things happen and they will not if a. Refund
they said, no they don't do a. Refund that's so
sad for a big business that the community is supporting
(01:24:16):
this golf course and they won't help out bride and
groom to go somewhere. ELSE i think that's so.
Speaker 3 (01:24:23):
Sad it's certainly.
Speaker 2 (01:24:25):
UNFAIR i, mean it's not the bride and groom's, fault
nor is it the fault of anyone who traveled to
the province to go to the. Wedding so just out of,
curiosity even if it was ten, bucks it should be.
Refunded what was the part of the down payment they.
Speaker 23 (01:24:37):
Made do you, know fourteen thousand? Dollars and if they, say,
well come the food is not even, ORDERED i wouldn't,
say but come pick up the. Food we could do
a backyard, wedding we could go somewhere, else or here's the. Refund,
Sorry and then the floors get us doon her. Flowers
(01:25:00):
all of a sudden she, says, well, NO i can't do,
them and you can't get a refund. BACK i, think,
Like i'm in business, myself SO i don't live in New.
Land but you, know some, people big businesses have to
help out the little guys. Sometimes.
Speaker 2 (01:25:17):
Absolutely you, KNOW i wonder when they signed into a,
contract was there any fine print that made reference to.
Speaker 23 (01:25:23):
Refunds they were for a natural, Disaster but who reads
fine fine? Print?
Speaker 3 (01:25:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:25:30):
No the Point i'm making is if the resort or
the golf course or some business includes that kind of.
Stuff for, me the fairness is when you say things out,
loud as opposed to think everybody reads every bit of fine.
PRINT i know where you're coming. From so If i'm
an operator AND i take a deposit for, whatever you,
know generally speaking in good, faith you say you know
(01:25:53):
you have to understand.
Speaker 3 (01:25:53):
It this is not, refundable you.
Speaker 2 (01:25:55):
Know just make people aware of what they get themselves
into so that you can actually ask some. Questions so
not refundable in any, circumstance and then we can have
that further conversation because fourteen thousand dollars is a lot of.
Speaker 5 (01:26:04):
Money, yeah but.
Speaker 23 (01:26:07):
You, know in the, SITUATION i, know fires and, everything
but the golf, course they should, say, well the community
is supporting us all those, years and in good, faith
they should refund the money for her to go somewhere.
Speaker 3 (01:26:21):
Else no ragment for, Me i'd be.
Speaker 23 (01:26:25):
Furious, Yeah so now we're left in limbo that, Like
i'm sure she's not the only one there with other
venues There friday and, whatever and they just, say, sorry we're.
CLOSED i know you're, closed but refund the money where
those bride and grooms can go somewhere. Else SO i don't.
(01:26:46):
Know it makes a bad mark on, businesses especially that golf,
course that they're operating all those years and people are supporting.
Them that's WHY i just want to call in and
let you guys, Know.
Speaker 2 (01:27:00):
Yeah no, Problem and that's what happens in the world of.
Business you, know sometimes word of mouth is very very
beneficial or very very. Harmful and people can hear this
as they see fit and talk about it and handle
their their wallets as they see.
Speaker 23 (01:27:13):
Fit that's, right thank you for your.
Speaker 3 (01:27:16):
TIME i appreciate. Yours thank, you thank.
Speaker 15 (01:27:18):
You by.
Speaker 2 (01:27:19):
Bye, okay let's keep rolling. Here let's go to the
line number. Four francis around the.
Speaker 10 (01:27:24):
Air, Hi, patty how are you?
Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
Today i'm, okay thank. You how about?
Speaker 24 (01:27:28):
You good? Good i'm, well thank. YOU i just have a.
Question i'm in the area In paradise That i'm in
the zone in the the.
Speaker 3 (01:27:43):
The alert, zone alert the alert.
Speaker 24 (01:27:45):
Zone, okay, uh if you go out of your, zone
like IF i get the order to go AND i
go up to the school In, caligarus are you allowed
to come? Back and are you allowed to go to
(01:28:06):
work and then come back into the zone to go
up to the.
Speaker 5 (01:28:10):
School the short answer, is if you're an essential.
Speaker 3 (01:28:14):
WORKER i don't.
Speaker 2 (01:28:16):
Think they make any distinguishing difference between who does what
for a. Living we're told that the black of terms,
now you, know like we had me Or babada on
yesterday talking about you, know people not being allowed back
into evacuation order. Areas you, know like if you go
to work and you need to go home to get
the dog or your bag or what have. You the
advice is that if you have to leave the area
(01:28:38):
is to proceed as if you are being in ordered to,
Evacuate so take your, bag make preparations for someone to
look after your, pet those types of. Things because the
fundamental answer is if you're at work and the alert
turns into an, order you can't go back.
Speaker 24 (01:28:51):
In so you can't go you can't go back into
the school up to the.
Speaker 3 (01:28:58):
School you can go to the.
Speaker 2 (01:28:59):
School but, okay so if the schools and kligaroos and
you're at work In Saint, john's then you can go
to the school In. Killigrew's but you can't go back
to your home In.
Speaker 10 (01:29:07):
Paradise, no that's, right that's.
Speaker 24 (01:29:11):
Right but you can go from from from caller. Grooge
you can go back to.
Speaker 2 (01:29:15):
Work, yeah absolutely can go to. Work, yeah if your
if your job is In Saint john's or is in
off of The Sudden, shore yes you can go to your,
job no.
Speaker 3 (01:29:24):
Doubt.
Speaker 2 (01:29:26):
Perfect, yeah as long as that's not an area that's under,
evacuation that's.
Speaker 24 (01:29:29):
Right, yeah she can go back into the. Zone, yeah
can't go back into the. Zone she just go back to.
Speaker 2 (01:29:37):
Work, Yeah i'll Just i'll just paint this picture, like for,
instance where does she?
Speaker 10 (01:29:41):
Work she works?
Speaker 24 (01:29:44):
Out, oh Thank. John's.
Speaker 2 (01:29:48):
Okay so IF i live In paradise in the area
that has an evacuation, alert AND i go to my
job In Saint john's and that alert turns into an evacuation,
ORDER i can't go back to my home In, paradise
BUT i can absolutely go to the school And, kligaros
and From keligaros next MORNING i can go back To
Saint john's to go to my.
Speaker 20 (01:30:03):
Job.
Speaker 5 (01:30:04):
Perfect that's ALL i needed to.
Speaker 3 (01:30:06):
Know, Perfect, francis thank you so.
Speaker 5 (01:30:08):
Much you have a wonderful, day you.
Speaker 3 (01:30:09):

got me a little bit thrown off. Here let's go

busy on this, front But i've got a ton of
questions that people asking, me And i'm trying to give
out the. Info, BETTY i appreciate your, time.
Speaker 3 (01:38:11):
Sir good Luck, berry thank, You you're, Welcome bye. Bye.
Speaker 2 (01:38:15):
Yeah the short answer is some of the exemptions are
some of the very specific scenarios people are asking. Me
the information is all pretty brand new to, me So
i'm still trying to figure it all. Out let's go
to line number seven to take it mot to the
president at the FFAW S Dwan, Street dwine around the.
Speaker 5 (01:38:28):
Air good, Morning, Patty good morning to.
Speaker 2 (01:38:31):
You so let's start with mackerels, so and then we're
GETTING i want to talk about the marine conservation, area
and then someone wants me to talk to you about
the golf Cod. Stock, well let's start With. Macerel give
us the. Update where are we?
Speaker 14 (01:38:42):
Sure?
Speaker 10 (01:38:43):
So, Firstly, PATTY i guess you, KNOW i just want
to say thanks to all the volunteers and the first,
responders who are you, know dealing with the wild fires?
Now obviously we've got members of volunteer fire, departments serving
on town councils and volunteering and other. CAPACITIES i know
it's pretty unpressed into, time SO i just want to
say thank you to everybody and hope everybody is staying.
(01:39:04):
Safe so, yeah just to talk. Mackerel you, know it
has been pretty frustrating the last few years to have
a moratorium on, mackerel a very limited bait fishery that you,
know the timing just doesn't work for a new fulad And.
Labrador and then to hear reports from our members of
what they're actually seeing on the, water and you know
there's a complete complete disconnect from WHAT dfo are saying
(01:39:27):
and from what we're hearing and what we're. SEEING i,
mean obviously we're getting the videos and. Pictures i'm sure
folks are sad them to you as well because there's
a lot of frustration out. There so you, know we
had met with previous, ministers got absolutely, nowhere you, know
just it was like beating your head against the, wall
to be, honest trying to get the realities of the
(01:39:47):
macerel stock and the macro fishery through to the. Department
WHAT i will say is we are cautiously optimistic With
Minister thompson AND i do want to thank her and
her for their availability and being so. Accessible we met
with The minister's staff Last, thursday Myself inshore Director Sherry
(01:40:10):
glynn And Harvester's Trevor jones in THREE k And Alan
shepherd in four hor and really just stressing again that
this limited bait. FISHER i, mean it's a. Joke the
timing doesn't. Work by the time the, fish when the
opportunity is here For harvester's nukeland labrador to harvest that,
fish the quote is. Gone it's not only just a
(01:40:32):
non labrador that are frustrated with. This you, know we've
talked to our counterparts in The. Maritimes they're at The
department as well to, say you, know this just doesn't.
Work the realities are much different than what you're. Saying
and The department doesn't even have a dedicated macro, scientist
so you, know when you're trying to run Down harvester's
throats and saying that there aren't a, mackerel you know
(01:40:53):
this stock is in. Trouble and then they ask will
show us the science and show us the data that you're,
using and you don't really have a macro, scientists it's
a little bit difficult to. Follow so we did meet
the minister's staff last week and yesterday The minister was
In garnish and again we thank her for. That met
with some harvesters down at The Harvard authority and on
(01:41:13):
the wharf and mackerel was obviously a huge topic of
conversation and the harvesters in attendance really stressed to The
minister that you, know we've seen more macro down here
In Fortune bay this year than we've seen in, ages
and you know it ranges from large mackerel that, obviously you,
know it's hard to dispute that those fish, migrators as
(01:41:36):
The DEPARTMENT i argue that they often. Do but then
you've got what we call tensil, macro, right and these
are little juvenile. Fish so it's haired to say that
that fish migrated very far because you know it's it's a,
baby and when you see recruitment like, that obviously it's
happening in her own. Waters so we really feel The
minister understands and what we gathered from her, yesterday you,
(01:41:57):
know we had pitched a proposal Last, thursday and it's
not a new. Proposal we had submitted it on their
minister LaBouche as, well but you, know we think it
pretty much got tossed in mcgarbage as soon as.
Speaker 5 (01:42:09):
It hit her.
Speaker 10 (01:42:10):
Desk Minister thomson has taken it very. Seriously we submitted
a proposal to open the ten thousand ton fishery this,
fall give harvesters the opportunity the harvest that, fish submit
the data to the, department and then the department would
actually have some solid macro. Science so yesterday she did
commit to getting back to us in short, order said
(01:42:31):
she understands that there is a significant disconnect between the
department and what harvesters are seeing on the, water and
she committed to finding a fix for. That so to
hear those words from The, minister it was, encouraging it was,
promising AND i think harvesters are finally feeling like they're
actually being her by The minister and her.
Speaker 3 (01:42:48):
Staff that's a good.
Speaker 2 (01:42:51):
Thing the macro conversation has always confused me in some,
parts because if we're talking about the fact that it's
a straddle stock and the migratory patterns are well, understood
The americans handle it different than we. Did we had
a full out moratorium that we moved to the bait.
Fishery they reduced the total lave of catching the macerel
in The, states and we didn't follow. Soup but it's
the exact same, stock which is strange to begin. With
And i've heard from many people that by the time
(01:43:13):
we get to go for the, mackerel then of course
most of it's, gone the attack has already been. Completed
SO i totally get. It mackerel is interesting in so
far as anecdotal evidence, goes because unlike a lot of other,
species which you cannot see macro our team at the
surface of the. WATER i, mean you can actually see
mackerel in droves in the. Bays so there's certainly more
(01:43:34):
work to be. Done and FOR dfl not to have
a macro specific scientist on had is also a little bit,
confusing given how important it, is whether it be as
a forge fish or a linchpin for bait.
Speaker 10 (01:43:44):
Fisheries and LIKE i, said it's a bit frustrating to
see The United states still having a. Fishery as you,
said it is a transvandory stock and has been studied
as a transvandory stock, saying you, know it's spawning in.
Golf we've argued that they're spawning happening here or The East,
coast whether it's on The south, coast and you KNOW
(01:44:06):
dfo doesn't really take that into. Account and of course THE,
us like you, mentioned THE us has a thirty two
hundred ton fishery right. Now they've harvested To bay fifteen
thousand tons over the last three. Years And canada you
look At tobay five hundred tons right and the management
is just not working like you, SAID i, mean when
you have five hundred tons there and it's not just
For newfland And labrador and by the time the traditional
(01:44:29):
harvesting time hits, around you, know late summer and into the,
fall the quote has. Cost you, know there's no equal opportunity,
there and that's what we've tried to push with previous
ministers that we don't think really got. Through But Minister
thompson really seems to understand that and wants to ensure
That newfland And labrador harvesters had equal. Opportunity we did
(01:44:51):
get the commitment From Prime Minister coarnity of, course to
make decisions closer to the, wharf and you, know at
least we're seeing the minister on the, wharves and we
they're seeing officials within the department reaching out a lot
more than they have in a long time to, say,
look how can we work together on. THIS i know
In ottawa they do have some new science staff and
they've committed to working with our science team as, well
(01:45:14):
because mackerel again is a weird. One you, know we
heard in The capeland fishery this year harvesters had to
stop Fishing capeland because mackerel were on top of the
capel and pushing it down and making it harder to. Access,
so you, know mackerel's, there and, sometimes you, know you
look at changing climate, patterns you look at changes in,
species and we have to look at new ways of
(01:45:36):
other measuring stocks or managing stocks to adjust to changing.
Realities and how we look at mackerel and manage macerel
hasn't changed in a long. Time SO i think we
do have an opportunity here to really look at some
of the changes and for The department to work with
harvesters to see how we can make this fishery. Well
first of, all to open this fishery and to make
it work for harvesters In New Communt.
Speaker 3 (01:45:57):
Labrador fair, enough.
Speaker 2 (01:45:58):
Let's get into the marine conservation or the proposed marine conservation.
Area your organization talked about worry about a ban on.
Fishing the manager for The National Marine Conservation areas, says
that's not. True so you'll still be able to go
after the lobster and the halibut and the red. Fish
maybe not this house because of the no bottom. Contact
so is that your, Understanding.
Speaker 10 (01:46:18):
PATTY i find a lot of the responses we get
pretty rich because you just talked to our counterparts In
Nova scotia what they went through in areas Like Saint Anne's.
Bank they were promised the same, thing Right and if
you talk to some of those, folks they were, told you,
know don't worry about your halibut, fishery don't worry about
your lobster. Fisheries and right now they've lost some of
their most valuable fishing. Grounds it's a really weird process
(01:46:41):
what we're going through right now on the southwest coast
with THE. Nmca and it's not just, us you, know
it's other industries as. Well but are really really worried
about what this is going to, mean and we brought
it up at The Premier brand table On trade last.
Week a number of industries did how concerned we are with,
this and the province is concerned as, well and they
also find this pro that's very. Strange you, know we
(01:47:01):
hear numbers tossed out like this is going to bring
hundreds of millions of dollars into the, area and we ask,
how and we can't get. Responses they give us really vague,
answers like you said on, oh you, know don't worry
lost as fine rich red fish is, spine and we're,
like but hang, on you say there's no bottom. TRAWLING i,
mean if the trial goes deep all of a, sudden
(01:47:22):
are you going to tell us there's an. Issue scallop
is out and that is a very lucrative scallop ground
for those. Harvesters you, know we're not talking about harvesters
with multimillion dollar enterprises. Here we are talking about, small
community based enterprises and the fishery is the backbone in those.
AREAS i, mean you're looking At, burgio you're looking At
rammy and all those. Areas you, know we're really really.
(01:47:43):
Concerned Harbert bretton. Again you know we heard numbers from the.
Premiere he talked about aquaculture and the percentage of people
he met working in the aquaculture industry that are, worried
and you KNOW i stressed with. HIM i, said, yeah
well the other percentage you're probably in the fishing boat
and they're equally as. Worried and we have been trying
to Get Parks canada at the table with. Harvesters what's happened,
(01:48:06):
is you, know generally they try to have meetings during
peak fishing, season which are going pretty, convenient but they're
a little while ago they met with, harvesters but on
the same day they met with supporters and the only
messaging that came out of it was look at HOW
i mean people are. Supportive they didn't speak about all
the pushback they got in that meeting with harvesters who
said this is not. On you, know this is a massive.
Area you keep increasing the, footprint you keep adding no fishing,
(01:48:30):
areas and you know you don't do that in consultation with.
Harvesters so harvesters really.
Speaker 5 (01:48:35):
Need to be at the.
Speaker 10 (01:48:36):
Table we've got some, incredibly incredibly strong representatives down there
and a lot of them are really young harvesters as,
well and they're concerned for what is going to mean
for their future because obviously they want to keep living
in their communities and keeping those fishing licenses in those,
communities but they're going to be shut out and not
be able to harvest the species that they have access.
(01:48:56):
To it's a significant concern and the answers we've gotten
From Parks, canada from the other organizations, involved it's pretty cold,
Comfort i'll tell, you.
Speaker 2 (01:49:06):
Yeah but it all have to be in, writing, obviously
to eliminate as much confusion on as. Possible, dwan CAN
i put you on hold for a. MINUTE i got
two more questions.
Speaker 3 (01:49:12):
For, you, Certainly, okay listen to.
Speaker 2 (01:49:14):
That we'll Put dwan straight on holistake a quick. Break
we'll come back and revisit a conversation With, dwan and
then you don't go.
Speaker 1 (01:49:19):
Away you were listening to a REBROADCAST Vocm Open. Line
have your say by calling seven oh nine two, seven
three fifty two eleven or one triple eight five ninety
eight six two six and listen live weekday mornings at nine.
Speaker 2 (01:49:34):
Am welcome back to Showles ree Joined Dwan street THE
Ffaw President tom Seven.
Speaker 3 (01:49:41):
Dwan you're back on the, Air Hey. Paddy we'll get
through a couple of quick ones.
Speaker 2 (01:49:45):
Here does THE ffaw represent anybody working in the aquaculture?
Speaker 10 (01:49:48):
Industry so we do have some workers in the plants
then are In, Harber. Britain yes we. Do and obviously
aquaculture is very very worried about what's going to happen
with THIS, nmca and you, know industries like mining as,
well and we hear that at the table when we
speak Su premier at the roundtable On trade and from those,
industries they're already hearing folks really really hesitant to bring
(01:50:11):
investment into this. Province and of course that's Concerning so you,
know we're speaking to our members across all of our
industries that we represent and we're hearing the same. Things you,
know these are communities that rely on investment from these
industries and if we're already seeing folks hesitant and trying
to pull, out you, know we're really worried about the
promises that are being, made whether it's From Parks, canada
(01:50:33):
whether it's from other organizations that are walking into these
towns and making empty promises to town. Councils to you,
know everyday citizens of what this is going to, mean
because you, know we don't really see the value obviously
when it comes to Like sandbanks as a, park we
can support. That you, know you walk out and you
see something that's protected and it's, Tangible but what are
(01:50:55):
you really protecting by closing all this water is to
industry that in the ground scheme things you, know is
not harmful the fishing, INDUSTRY i, mean even. Scallops it's
such a small. Scale we're not talking about massive offshore
scallop industries like we see in some areas in The. Maritimes,
again we're talking about really small enterprises that rely on
(01:51:16):
multi species to make a. Living and those folks right
now are scared of what this is going to mean
if that entire footprint is.
Speaker 2 (01:51:22):
Closed, yeah it's a pretty massive swath of water we're
talking about.
Speaker 3 (01:51:27):
HERE i got to get through another couple of quick.
Speaker 2 (01:51:29):
Ones so Had Colin ernstecker earlier talked about the golf cot.
Stock we know the moratory move was supposed to be
for one, year implemented IN i Think july twenty twenty.
Two we're still. There there's still a recreational food fish
which of, course takes very small quantities of, fish whether
be golf and Or Northern. Cot do you have any
sort of update about where we are in The Golf?
Speaker 10 (01:51:47):
Cot we, don't and you, know it's always worse and
we see fisheries closed because of course we all Know
northern cop is going to be closed for two years,
too and here we are finally thirty three years. Later
but you, know go cut is obviously a worry for
us too because the folks in The gulf obviously had
depended on that stock for, ages even in the years
(01:52:08):
leading up to the, moratorium had a very small scale
like thousand ton. Fishery and you, know there's a whole
slat of things going on in The, gulf and we
hear about seal, predation we hear about predation from redfish
on other, species and you, KNOW i think what's happened
in The gulf is what's happened in a lot of
areas WHERE dfo, science of, course is much more keen
(01:52:30):
to close the fishery than to actually work with harvesters
and even keep a small index fishery going to see
what's actually happening on the. Water AND dfl has always
managed species in silos rather than as an. Ecosystem. Right
so we saw it on the northeast. Coast now we're
seeing it in the golf as, well where they don't
really manage all species together and take into, account you,
(01:52:52):
know whether it's, predation what water temperatures can mean for
say shellfish flourishing over ground. Fish i'm hopeful that's going
to change now because we do hear some messaging coming
from the department and approaching fisheries in exactly that, way
but we don't hear a lot of golf from golf
cod and, really, REALLY i don't think there has been
(01:53:14):
a significant focus on the, golf and you, know maybe that's.
Speaker 5 (01:53:18):
To our fault as.
Speaker 10 (01:53:19):
Well but trying to keep in touch now with those
in the, Golf we've committed to sitting down with some
folks over there to really have an in depth discussion
on what harvesters you're seeing and what they think is going,
on because you, know we have a flourishing lobster fishery
in the, golf we have a flourishing halib of. Fishery
red fish has been really, good you, know shrimp has
(01:53:40):
had it, struggles and then there's, cod WHICH i think
tends to get a little bit forgotten in the, mix
but you know there's an opportunity there to try to
get some work done and again work WITH dfo to, say,
look you, know harvesters are, saying there's an opportunity. Here
are we going to have a thirty eight thousand ton
fishery like we have on the northeast? Coast probably, not
but there is an opportunity to remove a moratorium and
(01:54:01):
to start doing some, work to get some good solid
science on and see what opportunity is there for, harvesters because,
again you, know harvesters in The gulf have had a
bit of a rough goal for a while and they
want to see that fishery flourish. Again AND i mean
we certainly want to do our pairer to help.
Speaker 2 (01:54:17):
Them, yeah the folks who were trying to get a
regular shrimp lessns is because of the struggle with the
shrimp and then when the redfish decision came down the
way it, did of, course there was going to be
outrage very. Quickly BEFORE i go dwe has there been
any recent shakeup at senior leadership at THE. Ffaw i'm
getting rumors and hearing rumbles and that's not very. Helpful
so any shake up anybody come or.
Speaker 10 (01:54:36):
Goal, Yes so of course we did put out a
release done Our facebook, page on our website as. Well
a few weeks ago Our Secretary Treasurer Jason spingle did. Resign,
jason of, course we thank him for the decades of
work that he's put in at the. Union he was
there for some twenty six years on The West, coast
(01:54:57):
mostly as a staff, rat but then of Course secretary
treasure in twenty twenty you, too and did some very
very good work for the. Union we wish them all the,
best And i'm sure our members are wondering what that
means for that. Position so we're meeting with The Elections
committee and their executive board we started last week to
talk about what that process is going to look, like
and nominations will be open to fill that position very
(01:55:19):
soon because of Course jason was acclaimed back in the
election last, summer so there is a significant amount of
time left in that term for the next two, years
and we are looking forward to see who puts your
name for for that position and who'll be working with
us in that capacity going.
Speaker 3 (01:55:36):
Forward, YEAH i.
Speaker 2 (01:55:37):
Didn't see that news Release i'm not sure WHY i
missed it or HOW i missed. It appreciate the times
for And. Dwan thank, You Thanks.
Speaker 10 (01:55:42):
Patty AND i hope everybody's staying safe out there and
hopefully we're on the other end.
Speaker 5 (01:55:46):
Of this very very soon here, here take care you.
Speaker 3 (01:55:49):

Speaker 2 (01:55:50):

Air good, Morning, patty morning to.
Speaker 5 (01:58:26):
You so you KNOW i have a lot of.
Speaker 9 (01:58:29):
Fuel may or may not realize we're two hats one
of strowline action and right now my outdoor paintball field
is is actually Between Patty's bond And. Southlands and it's
kind of sobering to realize when you're when you're looking
at thirty one years of potentially getting burned. Out you,
know put puts a different skin on. It when you're
(01:58:50):
elected official tells reading real.
Speaker 2 (01:58:53):
TERRIBLE i, mean the the circumstances are. Dire so fingers
crossed for the best outcome here for you and for
everybody else.
Speaker 9 (01:59:00):
Impacted, YEAH i had a couple of city, things you,
KNOW i realized YESTERDAY i was putting together a list
of anything that could be flamme o or that fire
fighters might even know about out, there AND i email
it off To Saint John's.
Speaker 5 (01:59:13):
Regional and heads off to to those to.
Speaker 9 (01:59:16):
Everybody there as well as all the people directly and
directly dealing with these these wildfires and the tragedy that
they PART i realized at that moment that's when it
hit me where WHERE i, WAS i hadn't already thought about,
it you, know like you, know as a. Counselor this,
MORNING i was down meeting with people on a development Of,
castle and THEN i went out up to kim Out
(01:59:37):
terrace looking at the new speed speed comming the speed
hunters that are on On ladysmith and uh AND i
just just a couple of things along those lines that
a few people reach out to me who live on
roads Like Groves road or up at the upper brown
Of Tivvy park where people do go and they'll have a,
coffee they'll kind of hang, out you, know and they'll
(01:59:58):
they'll enjoy nature or whatever. Else and, uh these people
are terrified because a lot of people will have a.
Smoke AND i know we keep hitting on it about
people throwing their butts, out whether it's a marijuana butt
or a cigarette.
Speaker 5 (02:00:11):
Butt you, know Something i'd like to.
Speaker 9 (02:00:13):
Suggest is that everybody carry around a bottle of, water you,
know like a and and instead of throwing the butts
on the, ground if everybody in their vehicle have a
bottle of, water you can of course you can dump
that into proper, place you, know at the end of
the day or whatever.
Speaker 5 (02:00:26):
Else you.
Speaker 9 (02:00:27):
KNOW i think that'd be a great new have if you,
know if everybody and if you know people who are
having a smoke and you're at your business or your your, home,
like go, out get a bottle of water and you,
know put you, know two or four inches into the
bottom of, it and and and having it around for
all the smokers so that you, know they have a
place to put their butts in extinguish.
Speaker 3 (02:00:47):
Them it's certainly a better idea than flicking them out the.
Window the one hundred.
Speaker 9 (02:00:52):
PERCENT i want to Take i'll you, KNOW i wanting
to take off the council hat here, now AND i
want to talk about the wildfire, smoke because it doesn't
seem like not to raise people's. Anxiety, however the main
issue with wildfire smoke is two point five microns are
under and that's really. Small you can't see. It my
(02:01:14):
wife AND i were In beijing a number of years
ago and we advertised that FOUR covid and we had
in ninety five masks was because we'd heard how bad
the smog was supposed to. Be it's a beautiful sunny,
day crystal clear.
Speaker 5 (02:01:28):
Sky AND.
Speaker 9 (02:01:31):
I looked at the app and THE app said purple
purple is the worst air quality can be and it's
because of these really really fine. Particles two point five
microns are under and they actually will go right deep
in your lungs and they potentially can go right into
your bloodstream and cause. Inflammation AND i was looking at
a couple of studies after for McMurray as well as
(02:01:53):
after THE bc fires and immediately afterwards these wildfire, events
in instance of pneumonia goes, up people who have breathing
distress goes. Up there was a study In california On
reciss monkeys that showed that the lungs Of recis monkeys
that were exposed to extend The Wi fi or smoke
(02:02:14):
go way up and you can't see. It like a
lot of times people, think, oh look it's really heavy.
SMOKE i can really smell. It but they're really small
stuff you can't smell and you can't see.
Speaker 5 (02:02:23):
It so you really need.
Speaker 9 (02:02:24):
To pay attention to the air quality. Statements and right
now there's an air quality. STATEMENT i just looked around
the world And newfoundland right, Now Saint, John's newfouland right
now has some of the worst air quality in the,
world and out IN cbn it's even. Worse and the
forecast Mark Saint john's is. Higher so we're getting some
smoke FROM. Cbn we're obviously getting smoke From Patty's, pond
(02:02:46):
but there's even smoke that's coming across from Mainline. Canada
so you, know when you hear people talking about keeping
your windows, closed turning off your air, exchangers that's already.
Important if people have the, ability financial, ability or the
ability to purchase air filters for their, home especially in
their bedrooms and bedrooms or, kids if they have the,
(02:03:07):
ability they should do. THAT a lot of us still
have in ninety. FIVES i KNOW i do from my
business a lot in ninety. Fives last WEEK i started
handing them out to my. EMPLOYEES i just had an
employee go home now inside the, building and we have
filtration in our, building but she where she's, living, sleeping you,
know the smoke's getting into our. House so you, KNOW
i really feel the message needs to be put out,
(02:03:28):
there not to alarm, people but for people to be
as proactive as they possibly. Can and investments in investments
in you, know some, masks and and if you had
the wherewithal to invest in, filtration you, know carbon filtration
for the. Air you, know they decided the conversations we
need to be having because, unfortunately you, know this obviously
(02:03:49):
is a bad some, winter sorry, summer next next summer,
potentially who, knows BUT i KNOW i Have i'm monitored
her in my house BECAUSE i was worried ABOUT i
was worried about Raid on and and with the system
out of my, house my air quality is.
Speaker 5 (02:04:04):
Good i'll tell. YOU i go, outside it's not.
Speaker 9 (02:04:06):
Good AND i JUST i just want people to, really, really,
uh you, know take out. Heart and LIKE i see
people out running and jogging and, biking and people are
walking to work AND i really call on people LIKE
i played softball last. NIGHT i had an ninety five
mask on the whole. Time nobody really questioned. ME i
was the only, one, obviously BUT i really think that
now the time for people to you, know hollow up
(02:04:28):
the ninety five. Masks and for the same, REASON i
just pay attention to the air quality statements wherever you.
Speaker 5 (02:04:36):
Live, yeah So i'm just going to leave that.
Speaker 9 (02:04:39):
There for people's, information not, again not to alarm, people
but just to inform. Them one thing THAT i decided
to do prior to the patty'ston fire actually was we
are doing On friday at again my council hats off
now At Frontline action ten Par, place obviously wildfire smoke
and can.
Speaker 5 (02:05:02):
Section we're doing A we're.
Speaker 9 (02:05:04):
Doing a kind of like a fonde for the families
of people who.
Speaker 5 (02:05:08):
Are evacuated or who you, know a family of first.
Speaker 9 (02:05:12):
Responders AND i reached out to someone In carbonear And Peter's,
pizza by the, way is going to provide. Pizza we're
going to laser tottaging bounce castles and that's from twelve
thirty to three thirty at Ten Pearl place In Saint.
JOHN'S i reached out TO carabineir just to check in
on them and just let them. Know and then you,
know then you hear the stories of people who just
don't have to work.
Speaker 5 (02:05:33):
With, obviously and you know they had to be bossed
out of their. Communities so we're going to go out
there tomorrow twelve thirty to two.
Speaker 9 (02:05:42):
Thirty we're gonna bring out laser, tagging bouncy castles out
there behind the pool by the by the school and
Carbon air again.
Speaker 5 (02:05:50):
Where you know foot.
Speaker 9 (02:05:51):
Wildfire hopefully it allowed all to happen And Peter peters
pizza out there In. Carbonairs it's gonna be supplying some free.
Pizza so invite people to come for the one that's
In Saint. John's you can go to our website and
you can actually book a spot because we we have
we're a.
Speaker 5 (02:06:08):
Little bit more. Limited we're In.
Speaker 9 (02:06:09):
Carabinair we've got you, know big fields and software's kind
of limited livings maybe the fifty sixty seventy people at one.
Time but you can go in there and you can.
Read there's no charge for any of this. Stuff just
just try and, uh you, know try and bring a
bit of a bright. SPOT i know the kids you
know there's people actually in carabin air school, school actually
staying in. Cots you, know it's devastating what's happening out.
Speaker 5 (02:06:33):
There go.
Speaker 3 (02:06:34):
Down you're for doing.
Speaker 2 (02:06:34):
It.
Speaker 3 (02:06:34):
TIME i got to get to the. Break but appreciate your.
Speaker 5 (02:06:36):
Time, okay take care of.
Speaker 3 (02:06:38):
One you take?
Speaker 2 (02:06:39):
It bye, bye all, RIGHT i find it a break
in the. Morning when we go, Back, JOHN i want
to talk about the media Air hearts statue and She
Lolo wan's talk about blood.
Speaker 3 (02:06:45):
Collection don't go, away welcome back to the. Show let's go
to line number. Two, janet you're on the.
Speaker 7 (02:06:48):
Air, Hi, Jen it's not my real. NAME i just
used that to call. In i'm telling am both to
expected that was returned and.
Speaker 24 (02:06:58):
There's supposed to award a reward of for.
Speaker 7 (02:07:00):
That and do you know if that person that found
the statue is going to get that reward or how
does that?
Speaker 3 (02:07:07):
Work don't?
Speaker 2 (02:07:07):
KNOW i Asked Mara coombs that exact question here on
the show this. Week so the rewards twenty five thousand,
Dollars so a couple of. Things was the reward going
to be simply for a tip that led to the
recovery of the, statue WHICH i think is the. Case
so the short answer, is, yes that person is in
line to get that reward as far AS i, know
And i'll follow up and see if it has been paid,
out because if you're going to say there's a, reward, pardon.
Speaker 7 (02:07:31):
It hasn't been paid, up not THAT i know.
Speaker 2 (02:07:33):
Of it wasn't at least On monday when we spoke
To Mary. Coombs but we will indeed find out whether
or not that money got paid, up because if you
dangle a, reward you got to pay it.
Speaker 5 (02:07:41):
Out that's, right that's.
Speaker 7 (02:07:43):
Right, Well i'm the one that, sounded BUT i don't
want too many. Questions AND i KNOW i never received
the reward for returning it to, them, Okay and one
of the gaments has said at the beginning it said
that someone had to be, prosecuted but then they changed
that as long as the statue was, returned no matter
how many, pieces as long as was, returned you would
(02:08:05):
get the. Reward and SO i was just wondering how
long to add the weight blocky to get the.
Speaker 2 (02:08:10):
Reward that's an excellent, question and good on here for
what you've done, here because that's HOW i understand it as,
well is if the tip led to the recovery of
the statue that got a, reward SO i will send
a note off To Mary coombs to see where we.
Speaker 3 (02:08:21):
Are how's.
Speaker 5 (02:08:21):
That that's?
Speaker 7 (02:08:23):
Good thank you very, Much, Patty no problem to.
Speaker 3 (02:08:25):
All thank you for your.
Speaker 2 (02:08:26):
Time, okay, okay bye, bye all, right just keep her on,
here let's go line for she lay around the.
Speaker 25 (02:08:31):
Air, Hi, patty thanks for taking my.
Speaker 5 (02:08:34):
Call no, PROBLEM i really appreciate.
Speaker 25 (02:08:36):
IT i have been sick over the last year and
had surgery AND i was into the health signs yesterday
to see my. Doctor he gave me a blood note
to go have my blood worked on. Anyway SO i
just make a long story. SHORT i went to the
water for to get it done and the girl under
(02:08:58):
this said have you got an? Appointment AND i said.
No the doctor, say just come on and get it done.
Anyway she wouldn't take me at The waterford and there wasn't.
One so in the building sitting down waiting for the,
bloodwork not. One and you, KNOW i.
Speaker 10 (02:09:15):
Know, this there's a criteria for blood work that you
have to make an.
Speaker 25 (02:09:20):
Appointment BUT i go to The waterford every time my
granddaughters go to, there every time my children go. There
all the, time and you're giving an appointment for two
whole weeks and no matter when you go, there there's
not a soul in the. Building so there's something. Wrong
we're having to wait two weeks for one. Thing and
(02:09:43):
this girl that wouldn't take me yesterday because i just
didn't have an, appointment And i've been so sick over last,
year you, know like there's there's something wrong with the
system when this kind of stuff is.
Speaker 3 (02:09:55):
Happening i'm in the same. Boat WHEN i was told
by my doctor there's some update of blood.
Speaker 2 (02:10:01):
WORK i went down to the website AND i looked
at whether it be the water For Saint claire's And Major's.
Path let's just say for round. Numbers if it was
on the first of the, month the first, appointment it
was on the. Seventeenth, yeah and you're telling me there's nobody, there.
Speaker 25 (02:10:16):
Nobody there's not a soul in water for any Time
i've gone, There and yesterday was another episode to day
AND i said to, her there's nobody, here and she, said,
NO i, know but you got to have an. Appointment
that doesn't. Matter SO i HAVE i had come home
without without that making.
Speaker 18 (02:10:35):
Appointment.
Speaker 25 (02:10:37):
You, Know so it's kind of. UNREASONABLE i don't know
if the people who are head over this lab stuff
is doing their job or investigating how long it takes
to GET i, mean let's face, it how long do
it take you to get a blood test? Done you,
know really it doesn't take very. Long AND i mean
to go in there every, time and there's you can't
(02:10:59):
get appointment for two whole, weeks and then two weeks
you might be going on, vacation you might be doing something,
whatever and they can't give you one for next week
or next few. Days you, know it's just awful what's
happening with? That AND i was really keyed off at
the fact that there was nobody sitting down. There there's
two or three led people to take the blood and,
(02:11:20):
no because you haven't got an, appointment you can't come.
Speaker 5 (02:11:24):
In so that's my.
Speaker 2 (02:11:27):
Beat, yeah you would think the system would have tried
to make sure that everybody gets a test as quick as,
possible no matter.
Speaker 25 (02:11:32):
What and the doctor, said the doctor, said go and
get that done, now and we just did, that you.
Know M so like the doctors don't really know either
what's happening in these blood, clinics you, KNOW i, Know
i've gone To Saint clair's a couple of times and
there's more people waiting there and also at the health.
Signs but you, know The waterford is usually open every
(02:11:55):
time you go, there and yet this young girl would
not put me through.
Speaker 2 (02:12:00):
BAZAAR i appreciate letting us know. Now that got me
irritated BECAUSE i had to wait for seventeen days to
get my. Appointment, sheila thanks for your call this. Morning appreciate.
Speaker 25 (02:12:08):
This you walk into the health through The waterford any
day and see how many people sitting down waiting for blood. Work,
fine you may even meet someone coming out as you're going,
in but there's nobody else there and the three or
four there to take, blood so it's a bit.
Speaker 24 (02:12:28):
We'll push you.
Speaker 25 (02:12:29):
OFF Sa smiley.
Speaker 3 (02:12:31):
Understood thank, You. Sheila, okay you're. Welcome take, care bye.
Bye take my.
Speaker 10 (02:12:35):
CALL i appreciate, it and you have a good day you.
Speaker 3 (02:12:37):
Too thank, You bye, bye, okay bye. Bye final word
to go To. Lene every One marlene around the.
Speaker 27 (02:12:42):
Air oh, Hi, patty how are you?
Speaker 9 (02:12:44):
Today?
Speaker 3 (02:12:45):
Okay you?
Speaker 27 (02:12:46):
Good thank? YOU i emailed you AND i thought i'd
also speak to you concerning the actually the video that
my friend put On facebook yesterday in her garden and
she had a glass decorative type of, object ball ball
(02:13:07):
type thing in her garden and it was smuttering like
the smoke would start coming up because of the garden
was so hot and the. Glass so THEN i thought about.
IT i got to dig everything at my garden that's,
glass you. Know and you could see that.
Speaker 2 (02:13:23):
Happening, Absolutely like even the Cemetery association at The Saint
John's archdiasis they're asking people to take all these glass
ornaments and vases off their loved ones plots because of
the risk of.
Speaker 27 (02:13:34):
Fire, absolutely and you don't think about that unless it
stirred a little bit and told by somebody that it
happened to and other things maybe out there that we
need to know, it like compacting papers and putting it
in your greenhouse or outside or you. Know it all can,
(02:13:57):
ignite it all can start and destroy.
Speaker 14 (02:14:02):
Much.
Speaker 2 (02:14:03):
Absolutely you can be very innocent or, innocuous but it
can become a, big big. Deal so you're, right things
like that absolutely can. Happen i'm very likely are. HAPPENING
i appreciate, This, marilyn and you've had the last word this.
Speaker 27 (02:14:14):
Morning, yes thank, You AND i really want to thank
all the volunteers firefighters is very personal to. Me my
