Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Kwave's Pastor Spotlight featuring the Bible teaching of
our local Southern California pastors. This week we're pleased to
bring you Mission Viejo's native son, Mike Mayolo, lead pastor
of Mission Viejo Christian Church. Mike has a passion for
leading people into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. To
learn more about Mission Viejo Christian Church, you're invited to

(00:22):
visit MBCC Home.org.
Well today on Pastor Spotlight, Pastor Mike will be teaching
from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians chapter 9, verses
19 to 23. It's here we see Paul's commitment to
living on mission to win people to faith in Jesus Christ,
whatever it takes. We have some latitudes in sharing our faith,

(00:42):
and well, here's Mike Mayo now to explain.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
We have some freedoms, and of course, we don't want
those freedoms to get in the way of someone else
here in the gospel. So he says, look, even though
I'm a free man with no master, I have become
a slave, a servant to all people.
To bring many to Christ.
When I was with the Jews, I lived like a
Jew to bring the Jews to Christ.

(01:10):
I stop here for a second.
Paul had the unique ability to have a Jewish heritage,
but he also had the unique ability to have the
Gentile heritage. He was a Roman citizen, but he was
also a Jew. He was a Pharisee. He went to
the most um learned of schools back in the day.
It would be like in our current day, Harvard or Yale,
he went to the most prestigious schools. Everybody knew who

(01:31):
the apostle Paul was. And so here what he's saying is,
when I was Jewish, I understood.
He still is Jewish by heritage, but I understood the customs,
the laws, all those things in the Old Testament. And
so to win the Jewish people.
I would be OK.
With observing some of their laws and rules, because he

(01:55):
so wanted to identify with them that they might hear
his message about Jesus Christ. Does that make sense? When
I was with those who follow the Jewish law, I
too lived under that law, even though I am not
subject to the law. I did this so I could
bring to Christ those who are under the law.

(02:16):
When I'm with the Gentiles who do not follow the
Jewish law, I too live apart from that law so
I can bring them to Christ. But I do not
ignore the law of God. I obey the law of Christ.
What he's saying in this 21st verse is for those
who are not under the law, those are Gentiles or non-Jews.
He says, I, I, I can go hang out with them.

(02:36):
I can be respectful of them and even hang out
and do the things that they're doing, as long as
I don't.
Deter from the law of God, from the Bible, from
my own convictions.
An example that would be some of the guys are
going to a frat party or we're going to celebrate
this and that, and there's gonna be maybe some drinking involved,

(02:58):
but you, as a believer, don't drink. You can still
go hang out with them, but you don't have to
partake in what they're doing. Does that make sense? OK,
verse 22, when I am with those who are weak,
I share their weaknesses.
For I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes,
I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything

(03:21):
I can to save some.
I do everything to spread the good news and share
in its blessings. I don't know really how to be
honest with you, I don't know how to expound on this.
I like it just kind of speaks for itself, doesn't it?
It's like we could just leave today and I understand
what Paul's saying. I, I, I, I so love people

(03:43):
that are lost because I was once lost, and now
I want them to know the joy of knowing God
and peace and love and joy, all those things that
Jesus gives us and heaven.
And I will do whatever it takes for somebody to
hear the good news of Jesus Christ.
As long as it's not compromising values, as long as
it's not compromising the word of God.

(04:03):
Here at NBCC.
Our vision is so simple. It really just comes out
of Matthew 28:18 to 20.
Bringing people to relationship with Jesus Christ and making disciples
who make disciples. That's it. It's so simple, but the
question is, how we going to do that? That's nice.
We can put that on a website, you can plaque

(04:24):
it on a wall, you can put it on t-shirts. It's, it's,
it's easy to remember, but how do we do that
in a world that really is sometimes hostile against the
church and hostile against God and hostile against the Bible,
or maybe just doesn't really care, even know that we're here.
I think Jesus following Jesus's.

(04:44):
Pattern of life is the best way. Why are there
so many people?
I mean, there were up to 20,000 people when he
gave the sermon on the mount and fed 5000, it
was really 20,000, 20,000 people came to hear him speak,
and it says they were listening to him for the

(05:05):
entire day. Why?
Well, I'm sure there were some people there for the miracles.
I'm sure there were some people, they love to hear
him speak, but I really think, just looking at the
life of Jesus in context of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
Is that Jesus was extremely authentic.
He was real. He was down in the streets with people.

(05:27):
He was down with the confusion, the questions, the problems,
the demonic issues, sin, all kinds of issues that everyone
is dealing with. Jesus was down.
In the streets with everyone, he was real.
They could relate to him.
I think the second thing is Jesus just loved everybody.

(05:51):
He didn't just love everyone. Jesus is love.
And isn't really that what everyone's searching for? We're searching
for a reason to be loved, we're searching for significance, value,
to make a difference. We want our life to matter.
And Jesus did not say, clean it up and then
I'll love you, clean it up and then he just said,
you just come to me. Anyone tired? Anyone weary?

(06:15):
Anyone exhausted of the chase?
Like chasing the wind.
Just come to me all that are tired and heavy laden.
I will give you internal rest.
I think it was because he was authentic, he was real,
he loved everybody for free.
He never compromised the message. He never compromised truth, and

(06:37):
Jesus was on mission, man. He had a goal. He
was here, born of the Virgin Mary, lived here 33 years,
came to die on the cross, willingly gave his life,
so we could have eternal life, and we could have
life here on earth. I think the other reason he
was on mission was he got train these 12 men

(06:57):
that he handpicked. He chose these men.
To follow him and women, he called them to follow
him all the days of their lives.
And he had to train them and equip them. Why?
Because God's goal is to reach the entire world with
the gospel of Jesus Christ. That's his mission, and therefore,
if we love him, that's our mission.

(07:20):
I was sitting in our, uh, we have a men's
Saturday Bible study. All, all men are welcome to come. We,
we got women's Bible studies, but this particular one happens
for men on every Saturday morning. And the, the cool
thing about it is men were just starting to invite
other guys and it's growing and growing. So we had
to split it into two groups. So fun, so cool.
And we're going through the Bible, just going through the

(07:41):
New Testament verse by verse, chapter by chapter. And the
cool thing about it is there's teaching, but then there's
opportunity to ask questions and for guys to chime in,
give some input, and I, I don't understand this, and
how do we do this? And I heard this over here.
How does this relate to that? And 5 minutes, we
take 5 minutes before we start the study and we ask, man,
when anybody here like to just share, what has Jesus

(08:03):
done in your life?
And all of a sudden, one of the guys stands
up and his name is Mark, and he just tells
about how the, and I had no idea till he
told the story that his life, his marriage was spinning
out of control. They had split up. He got a DUI,
he went into jail, and it was, it was a
life-changing experience for him.
Because it was in the jail cell that he met Jesus,

(08:23):
gave his life to Jesus Christ, and he was sharing
with other people about what the experience he had with Jesus, experience,
experienced as he was sharing that with other people who
were in jail. Nobody told him, now you gotta do this,
you gotta teach this class. Now you gotta go to
this class, and now you gotta share the gospel this way.
He was just sharing his story, sharing his experience, and
other people were like, I need what you have.

(08:46):
One of the other guys stands up and says, I
was in jail too.
Over here at music. I got a DUI, man. I
didn't know these guys were in and out of jail.
And I said, listen, the only, the only difference between
us is you got caught.
That's the only difference between people who go to jail
and people who don't. So lest I start pointing the finger, man,
we're praising God. Look at what Jesus did in your life, man.

(09:08):
Is your life perfect? Is it what it ought to be? No,
we'll never be there this side of heaven, but man,
I'm trying, I'm moving forward. One of the other guys
stood up and says, I gotta confess, man, I was
an absolute control freak.
Before I met Jesus, I had to control everything in
my life. I had to control my wife, my kids,
my life, my finances. I was in control of everything
till I figured it out. It doesn't work anymore. And

(09:30):
I accepted Jesus into my life, and as I accepted
Jesus into my life, I let him have control now,
and he's following Jesus. Now, every single one of those guys,
all three of those guys came to Jesus because one
person shared the great news of God.
Most of you here today, you're here because somebody shared

(09:52):
with you. Somebody invited you, somebody sat down and cared
about your soul enough to tell you the story of
what happened in their life, and something happened in your heart.
Something happened on the inside that was.
spiritual. It's nothing of this world where you recognize your
need for God. I recognized in my life at 17.5,
I needed God in my life. It wasn't working, my

(10:14):
life wasn't working. I recognized that I was a sinner.
I was so lost. And Jesus Christ, I asked him
to come into my life and he changed everything.
I know sharing the good news is sometimes awkward. I
get it.
We don't wake up in the morning and go, gosh,
I hope I have some relationship that I can really
wreck today.

(10:35):
I hope I can just make some situations really awkward
in my life. The guy that I've been working with
for 15 years, I hope that there's some friction that
happens here. There's a family member, man, I just hope
some bad things happen. None of us do that.
But I know that sometimes it can be awkward. It
can be scary.
There have been moments I knew the spirit of God

(10:56):
was telling me to share the gospel with some folks
and I chickened out.
I didn't want him to think I was weird, didn't
wanna think, didn't at the moment, I just had weakness.
I didn't want him to think I was one of
those narrow-minded, hate everybody, all that stuff that we hear
in the media, that's not true, as Christians, we don't

(11:18):
hate anyone. I mean, the true Christians, we don't hate people.
But unfortunately, those, those stigmas and some of those, those
things can keep us from sharing God's love.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
You're listening to Kwave's Pastor Spotlight featuring Mike Mayolo, lead
pastor of Mission Viejo Christian Church. For information about Mike's church,
visit MVCChome.org. Once again, here's Pastor Mike Mayolo now with
more of his message titled Move for the Gospel.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
When I saw my wife for the first time at
the movie theater at Laguna Hills Mall Cinema back in
the day when it was there, they demolished it. I
was so sad. That's where I met my wife. That's
where and the first time I saw her, she was
selling tickets in the ticket booth and I was one
of the scum ushers, you know, scraping the gum off
the carpet of the, the cinema. I, I saw her
from afar.
I wanted to ask her out. I fell in love
with her from the moment I saw her, and I

(12:15):
remember I was so like nervous to ask her out.
So I did what most guys do. I started asking
the other guys who worked there, tell me about her,
what's your story? What's the deal? Does she go, yeah, yeah, yeah, dude,
she's way out of your league. In fact, she's dating
somebody else.
I was like, really?
And because I was asking, I, I was so nervous
the first time I asked her out and I looked

(12:35):
back on that and think, gosh, if I never asked
her out, if I didn't take a risk, even though
it felt awkward, what if she said no? What if
she said, get away from me. Get out of my face.
You're ugly. I don't like you. I don't want to go.
Well with you? What if she said those things, but
thank God she didn't. And what if I would have
not stepped into that moment? And then I was equally

(12:56):
as nervous asking her father if I could marry his daughter.
He's 30 year lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps, dude.
I was scared to death.
I mean, I had rehearsed this thing in the mirror.
I had thought about this, I had prayed about it.
I had some friends anoint me with the holy oil,
so I gotta have this moment cause if he doesn't,

(13:17):
I expected him to say, you're not gonna marry my daughter,
get down and give me 30. I was expecting something
like that, right?
I was so nervous, I was trembling, my voice was like,
excuse me, Mr. Steel, can I marry your daughter? That's
how it felt. But if I did not step out
and take a risk.
I never would have experienced.

(13:41):
Knowing her and loving her.
I, I, I guess, I know, we know we're supposed
to share the gospel. We know that. I, I know
I'm supposed to invite people to church, but I don't
want you to do that because what you're supposed to,
you have to. I want you to do it because
you love God and you trust him so much that

(14:02):
you'll step out in faith and share your story with
somebody else. Does that make sense?
So here's what Paul did. I just want to encourage
you to see how far we can get with this.
The writer of this letter, number one, Paul had the message,
and we have the message.
We have the same message that the apostle Paul had. God,

(14:23):
there's a God in heaven, He created you. He loves you,
and like a parent and child, he just wants a
relationship with us. That same message, 2000 years ago is
the same message, and we see lives change even in
this very moment because that message is truth. Jesus died,
he rose again, and through accepting him, we have new life.

(14:47):
We can have eternal life and life here on earth.
Number 2 is that he knew God called him.
We know God called us.
Right? He called you. He called you to follow him.
He calls you to have relationship and that now he
is equipped you, empowered you, you are anointed of God
because of the Holy Spirit and the seal that's in

(15:08):
your life, because he has so covered you, because you
have been so found by Him. He has now called
you to share the good news. Jesus did not say
to the disciples, hey, if you guys can fit it
in your schedule, preach the gospel and baptize and disciple everybody.
He just said, go!
And really the context of that means as you go.

(15:28):
That wasn't for the apostles only, that wasn't just for
pastors and teachers that God called, that was for all
of us.
You have people in your life that you can reach.
I can't reach them. If I was to knock on somebody,
somebody's door near your house and say, hi, my name's
Pastor Mike. I'd love for you to come to Mission
Vie Christian Church. I'd probably get a lot of negatives.
I'd probably get doors slammed in my face. But because

(15:49):
you have relationship and friendships with people around you, you
can reach them better than any pastor or any teacher.
Of Jesus.
Number 3, Paul was so crystal clear in this and
how he lived. He had the Holy Spirit and we
have the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit in you, he is the comforter, the counselor.

(16:12):
He's the truth. He is the third person of the Trinity.
He is God Almighty, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. He's the
one who convicts us of sin when we came to Jesus.
He's the one that offers hope. He's the one that
reveals Jesus to all of us, and he's the one
that will give you the words.
I know that sometimes there's awkwardness and apprehension and nervousness

(16:34):
to do it. What will I say? What if they
ask me a question? What if they don't want to
be friends anymore? What if they turn away from me?
Matthew 10:19 says this, and look, I'm in this with
you together. Either we're gonna believe this stuff or we don't.
If we really believe it, and we trust Jesus, then
won't he come through with it?
Matthew 10:19 says, so when they arrest you,

(16:56):
When they look down on you, when they call you homophobic.
Xenophobic, all those things that we hear in the media,
and you know in your heart you're not like that.
When that happens, don't worry.
About how to speak or what you are to say.
For the Holy Spirit will give you at that very moment,

(17:20):
the words to speak.
It won't be you speaking.
But the spirit of your father speaking through you.
I have been in situations where somebody's talking to me
about a problem, and in my mind, I'm like, I
have no idea what to say. And I just help
me Jesus, help me Jesus, you gotta give me something,

(17:42):
give me something. Give me something, God, give me something
right now, Jesus. And all of a sudden these words
come out and I don't even, I didn't even prepare those.
You, you, you know what I'm speaking, right? The Holy
Spirit works through us. He gives us the words. What words?
Is it magic? Does it just happen?
I'm so glad you're here this morning, so glad if

(18:03):
you're online with us, because the more that we hang
around the word, we're hanging around where God is in unity,
some of that stuff just rubs off on us. What
was the scripture 1 Corinthians 7:1923. Yeah, I remember what
Paul said about becoming all things to all men. You're
building a platform in your life for the Holy Spirit
to use the.
So when you're out there at Costco, or standing there

(18:24):
on the sidelines of your kid playing soccer, or maybe
you're in school, in class and walking through halls, and
all of a sudden there's opportunity and someone says, Tell
me about this God, or you go to church, tell
me about this, and the words will just come because
you have been standing firm on the word. His word
will come through you. There's no pressure. Oh man, I
got to win 5 people to Jesus today.

(18:46):
Uh, we got baptize 6 people. We got, we, we, we,
we have to do this. What if, what, what if, how,
what do I say? The Holy Spirit will use you, man. I, I, I,
I have seen people share with others, and after the
whole thing happens, they go, what did I say? I
have seen that happen.
So I'm like this. Open my mouth, he will speak

(19:07):
through me. Either I believe Matthew 10:19 or I don't.
And if I do, yeah, it's awkward. Yeah, I feel nervous. Yeah,
I don't want people to reject me.
Either I trust him or I don't.
And I gotta tell you, even if there are 3 no's,
it's that 4th 1.

(19:29):
It's that 4th 1, right? When someone you love and
someone you've been praying for comes to Jesus, there is
nothing like that.
Number 4 is this, he was bold, and so we
can be bold. Courage and boldness are a part of
who God is.
Acts 4:13, Peter and John, when they had healed the man.

(19:52):
The beggar, and he accepted Christ, believed in the Messiah.
When the people heard this and saw Peter and John,
they realized they were unschooled ordinary men.
We don't have to go to seminary. You don't have
to go to classes. You're sharing your story. You're sharing
what happened. You're sharing about, you know, now that I've

(20:13):
been following Jesus, life isn't perfect. It's not easy. I
still have a mortgage. I still have problems. I still
got a marriage issue. I still got this, I got
this problem, I got this issue, I got this going on.
But Jesus gives me the strength, man, to handle it,
gives me the strength to get through it.
That's where Jesus is so, he's God in flesh in us.
And I think people are looking for that, they're not

(20:35):
looking for a plastic.
Everything's wonderful, everything's great. Just come follow Jesus with me.
They're looking for real people who are struggling with everyday
stuff that we struggle with, but Jesus gets us through it.
Number 5 was this, he was obedient to God, and
so we can choose obedience.
It's not like we wake up every day going, OK,

(20:56):
who are we gonna share the gospel with? There are
some days, I don't wanna share the gospel. I just
want to get in my own problems. I wanna stay
in my own issues.
And Jesus calls us
Get out there, man. Trust me, I have noticed that
when I get outside myself and call somebody else or
reach out to somebody else, it gets me out of

(21:17):
the funk that I'm in. Does that make sense? Serving people,
offer to take your friends' kids to the soccer game.
Offer to mow my neighbor's lawn, offering to pray for someone,
just listen to someone, being kind to people. Small little
acts of kindness go such a long way in our
fast-paced whirlwind of the OC.

(21:39):
Number 7 is he didn't want anyone to be lost.
I
I mean, I know I'm supposed to believe this stuff.
Maybe I should go back to #7. cause to be honest,
you know what, Mike?
I'm so busy with my own life, I don't even
think about my friends being lost.

(22:00):
If that's you,
You're in good company.
Because at times we all
Get so stuck in here that we forget about what's
going on out here.
And I would just say, for me, when I start
to get callous and start to get hardhearted and into
my own life and my own problems, I gotta get

(22:22):
to my knees. If that's you today and think, gosh,
this really isn't within me. I mean, I just, I,
I see what you're saying, but it's really not in here.
The best place to go, if there's one word that
God gives you to get on your knees, say, God,
put a passion in my heart. Break my heart for
people that are lost. Break my heart for people that
are in complete disobedience.
Obedience God, to you, and they just don't know the

(22:43):
love of Jesus yet. Break my heart, God, let tears
fall from my faces. Let me stay up all night
in prayer, praying for somebody's soul. Do something in me, God,
wreck me on the inside so that you can put something,
someone together on the outside.
