For this episode, David is joined by Helen Pollock. She helps people share their stories via books. Helen works with both men and women, but Her Next Chapter venture focuses on helping successful women overcome their lack of confidence and the bias they face to share their stories.

Helen and David discuss how the way society treats women holds them back. She also talks about living with an abusive partner. Explaining why it took her a long time to realise she was an abuse victim and how she finally ended that relationship.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Helen noticed that a lot of her female clients lacked confidence even those that have MBEs.
  • Society still reacts negatively to successful women.
  • A lot of negative behaviour is done unconsciously.
  • Domestic abuse does not have to involve hitting.
  • If you are in a relationship where you are walking on eggshells all of the time, that is no way to live. It is highly likely to be an abusive relationship.
  • Abuse is a pattern of behaviour, not one-offs that are apologised for and never repeated. We all occasionally behave badly.
  • Some domestic abusers are also pillars of the community.
  • Self-care makes you stronger emotionally and mentally as well as physically.
  • Before writing your book identify who it is you want to reach.
  • Be real, but only share what you are comfortable with.
  • Trust your gut.
