Representative democracy is about representation by the people, for the people; hence, our so-called democratic elections. Through their campaigns, candidates are effectively saying they will represent the people’s interests. But when you look at your politicians, do you actually feel represented? This isn’t about whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, but whether our politicians truly represent the interests of today’s society. And I don’t know about you, but when I look at our government, I see too many politicians who aren’t really connected with the needs of our country today. All too often, aging politicians become careless as retirement draws nearer, not seeing the next generation’s problems as their own.
In this episode, I discuss aging, competency, and mental fitness among politicians. I explain what a representative democracy is and why it’s difficult to execute in today’s divided world. I also share Nikki Haley’s thoughts on mental fitness for politicians, highlight why being able to campaign is important, and underscore the need to vote for leaders who understand the needs, issues, and challenges of today’s society.
“We want leaders who understand today’s economy; who understand today’s crises; and who understand today’s job and housing markets.” - Jennifer Nassour
