Who knew that there are rainforests in the UK?

The Wildlifers’ wits are tested when they try to catch a green-fingered thief in Borrowdale Rainforest in the Lake District.

Someone has been stealing lichen, a strange plant life form that’s made of fungus and algae, and is essential for forest life.

While the gang are solving the puzzle, they meet a local, Cuckoo. But there’s something a bit strange about this bird. Can they trust Cuckoo or will their feathered friend land them in trouble?

ROXY (00:03):
Hey Wildlifer, Roxy here, Apprentice Ranger with Ranger
Rae and the Wildlifers. And thisweek Ranger Rae is travelling to
the majestic BorrowdaleRainforest in the Lake District.
That's right, a rainforest righthere in the UK.
I'm sure all sorts of animalantics happen in a place like
this. Let's swoop in with Owland see what's going on.

OWL (00:32):
There's nothing like an early morning flight through the
rainforest. So early the sunisn't even up yet.
Hello, Buzzard.
Hello, Falcon.
While they are starting theirday, I'm getting ready for bed.

(00:54):
Hang on, what's this? Looks likea hiker. But what's he doing
with that lichen? Hey, you can'ttake that!
Silly human. You can't just takeLichens from the rainforest.
Although there is a chance hedoesn't know what a lichen is.
Luckily, I know just the humanto call to sort this out.

(01:17):
Awooooooooo

VOICE OVER (01:21):
Across the many majestic, wild spaces of the
United Kingdom, From woods, wetlands, to mountain and heath,
whenever help is needed, oneranger and her animal friends
always answer the call.

THEME TUNE (01:36):
It's Ranger Rae and the Wildlifers!

RANGER RAE (01:39):
I can talk to animals!
It's a ranger's dream!

THEME TUNE (01:42):
It's Ranger Rae and the Wildlifers!

RANGER RAE (01:46):
Say hello to my animal team!

THEME TUNE (01:48):
With Deer and Fox and Wildcat. Mole and Dragonfly,
Beaver and Bat.

BEAVER (01:55):
Sound the alarm and we'll come running to you.

WILDCAT (01:58):
With our animal powers, we'll know what to do.

THEME TUNE (02:02):
It's Ranger Rae and the Wildlifers.

OWL (02:07):
I wonder how long it'll take them to get here. I am
getting very, very sleepy.

RANGER RAE (02:14):
Did somebody call for Ranger Rae? I'm here with
Fox and Mole and Roxy to savethe day.

OWL (02:21):
Oh, Ranger Rae and the Wildlifers. That was fast. I'm
Owl, Tawny Owl, if you want togo with my full name.

FOX (02:30):
Oh, so you must be behind that twit-to-woo call I've heard
about the place.

OWL (02:35):
Actually, us female owls just do the twit part. Then the
males do the to-woo.

MOLE (02:41):
Oh, we're in a rainforest. I bet there's loads of wriggly,
wiggly, jiggly worms here.

ROXY (02:47):
What exactly is a rainforest, Ranger Rae?

RANGER RAE (02:49):
Rainforests are big areas full of tall trees that
experience lots and lots ofrainfall. The wet conditions
mean all sorts of amazing thingscan grow here.

ROXY (02:59):
It's so cool. I love looking up to the treetops. It
makes me feel like I'm in... I'min...
Well, I'm not sure. But itdoesn't really feel like the UK,
that's for sure.

RANGER RAE (03:11):
What's going on, Owl? Is someone or something in
trouble?

OWL (03:15):
(Yawn) It's very serious, Ranger Rae. I saw a hiker taking
some of Borrowdale Rainforest'sprecious Lichens.

RANGER RAE (03:24):
That just won't do. Many of the Lichens here are on
the protected list. Isn't thatright, Wildlifers?

FOX (03:30):
Er, sure.
Yeah, how dare they touch theLickees.

MOLE (03:36):
That's so terrible, though, poor Lunchens.

ROXY (03:39):
Ranger Rae, what are Lichens?

RANGER RAE (03:42):
I'm glad you asked. Do you want to take this one,
Owl?

OWL (03:46):
Oh, no, no, you go for it. I'm just going to rest my eyes
for a second.

RANGER RAE (03:52):
Lichens are very special plant-like lifeforms you
can find growing on places likeplants, rocks and trees. This
rainforest is full of Lichens.See, on this tree here.
Sometimes they look like bits ofmoss, but really they're a
combination of fungus and algae.

OWL (04:08):
Oh, Ranger Rae, what time is it?

RANGER RAE (04:12):
It's 7am.

OWL (04:13):
Oh, it's nearly time for me to hit the hay.

MOLE (04:16):
I don't get it. How are we supposed to solve this situation
if Owl is asleep?

OWL (04:21):
Oh, somebody else will be along to help you,
momentarily... (snore)

RANGER RAE (04:27):
I guess we'd better wait and see who comes along.

MOLE (04:31):
I'm going on a worm hunt. This lovely soft ground must be
full of worms. A wriggling andjiggling their way through the
soil. Oh, it gets me so excited. Can I get any of you a worm
while I'm gone?

FOX (04:44):
No, thanks, Mole.

MOLE (04:45):
All right, then. And more worms for me!

ROXY (04:49):
Is this a lichen?

RANGER RAE (04:50):
I'm sure it is, Roxy. Once you know what you're
looking for, you'll find themeverywhere in the rainforest.
Borrowdale Valley is one of thewettest places in the UK.
Perfect conditions for lichen togrow.

ROXY (05:01):
(Strange noise) What was that?

CUCKOO (05:05):
Cuckoo!

RANGER RAE (05:06):
Sounds very familiar. I wonder if it's a...

CUCKOO (05:09):
Cuckoo! I gave you a fright, didn't I?

RANGER RAE (05:12):
Maybe a little one. You must be...

CUCKOO (05:13):
Oh, I'm Cuckoo! Hey, you, Fox, could you mind my egg
for a second?

FOX (05:18):
An egg? Why are you asking me to mind an egg?

CUCKOO (05:21):
Just mind it for a second. I'll get it back from
you later, honest.

FOX (05:27):
All right, then.

CUCKOO (05:28):
Oh, thanks.
You're a star. Now, what's oldOwly been telling you?

RANGER RAE (05:32):
There was a hiker taking Lichens.

CUCKOO (05:34):
Let me guess. A hiker was taking Lichens.
Owly put out a call for help.Fell asleep as soon as you got
here.

FOX (05:41):
Yeah, that's pretty much it.

CUCKOO (05:42):
That's nocturnals for you.
Always drifting off at the worsttimes.

MOLE (05:46):
Worms for all.

CUCKOO (05:48):
Speaking of nocturnals.

MOLE (05:50):
Hey, Moles aren't nocturnal.

ALL (05:53):
Really?

MOLE (05:54):
No, we're just... Very, very shy. Who's this?

CUCKOO (05:58):
I'm Cuckoo.
Would you mind my egg for aminute?

MOLE (06:02):
Why?

CUCKOO (06:02):
Just mind it for a few minutes, come on.
I'll be your best friend.

MOLE (06:07):
All right, then, but just for a few minutes.

CUCKOO (06:10):
Ha, ha, ha, ha, of course.
Anyway, did Owl give youdirections before nodding off?

FOX (06:15):
No, nothing.

CUCKOO (06:17):
Might be a tricky task, so...
Tell you what.
Why don't we stop at my nest andwe can come up with a plan
there.

RANGER RAE (06:24):
Sounds good to me. Thanks, Cuckoo.

CUCKOO (06:26):
Oh, you can thank me later.

FOX (06:27):
Hey, Mole, there's something about this Cuckoo
character I don't trust.

MOLE (06:34):
Oh, I know what you mean.

ROXY (06:39):
Well, Wildlifer, isn't this an interesting adventure
we're on? So great to explorethe rainforest, even if I have a
sneaking suspicion that Cuckoois up to no good. But with Owl
asleep... I guess they're ouronly hope for finding those
lichens...

CUCKOO (06:56):
Here we are.
Home sweet home.

RANGER RAE (06:58):
It's a very nice nest.

CUCKOO (07:00):
This old thing?
Yeah, I've been meaning to cleanit up for a while.

MOLE (07:04):
Do you have any worms? I'm starving.

FOX (07:07):
You had worms five minutes ago.

MOLE (07:09):
Oh, it was more than five minutes ago, wasn't it, Cuckoo?

CUCKOO (07:13):
What do I look like to you.
Some sort of Cuckoo clock?
Let me just see if I have anyworms in the back.
Make yourselves at home.

FOX (07:21):
There's something funny about this Cuckoo character,
Ranger Rae.

RANGER RAE (07:26):
I know.

ROXY (07:27):
The feathers in this nest don't look much like Cuckoo
feathers.

RANGER RAE (07:31):
You're right, Roxy. I don't think this is Cuckoo's
nest at all.

FOX (07:35):
Hold on.
Aren't cuckoos known for layingtheir eggs in some other bird's
nest?

RANGER RAE (07:42):
(Bird Sounds) Uh-oh. I think this nest might belong
to that bird.

MOLE (07:47):
Get away!

CUCKOO (07:50):
Whoops!
Must have got the wrong nestagain.
Happens every time. See you alllater.

ROXY (07:56):
That's the last time I trust a Cuckoo.

RANGER RAE (07:59):
I suppose we should have known better. Cuckoos like
to lay their eggs in otherbirds' nests and trick the other
bird into raising their young.

FOX (08:07):
Outrageous!

RANGER RAE (08:09):
Sometimes nature works in strange ways and
animals need to use clevertricks to survive. Should we go
back to Owl and wait for them towake up?

ALL (08:18):
Good idea.

RANGER RAE (08:22):
All right, Wildlifers, it's getting dark
now. Owl should be waking upsoon.

MOLE (08:27):
Now I'm getting tired.

FOX (08:29):
Come on, Mole, don't doze off yet. We need you for your...

MOLE (08:33):
Worm-catching abilities.

FOX (08:35):
I was going to say amazing digging skills.

MOLE (08:38):
Oh, yes, I guess that's fair enough.

OWL (08:44):
What are you doing here? Didn't you catch that hiker yet?

RANGER RAE (08:49):
We need your help, Owl. You're the only one who
knows where the hiker is.

FOX (08:53):
Cuckoo said they'd help us, but all they did was make us
mind their eggs while leading usinto some other bird's nest.

CUCKOO (09:01):
Oh, Cuckoo, you promised this wouldn't happen again. Give
the eggs here. I'll make surethey get back to Cuckoo.

RANGER RAE (09:10):
It's starting to get dark, Owl. But if you can show
us where you saw the hiker, Foxcan use their super tracking
powers to track them down.

OWL (09:18):
Sounds like a plan. Follow me. (Flapping Wings)
Whoops, forgot none of you canfly. On foot we go. This way.
Now let me see.
Yes, it was here I saw him liftthe Lichens.

RANGER RAE (09:41):
Very good, Owl.
What have you got, DetectiveFox?

FOX (09:46):
Let me see.
Just trying to pick up the scentand...
Ah! Yes!
This way!
And now, this way!
Through these bushes here andvoila!

(10:08):
One human hiker as requested.

RANGER RAE (10:11):
Just in time too. It's getting very dark out here.

MOLE (10:14):
Oh, how exciting. Do you think he has any worms?

ALL (10:17):
Not now, Mole.

RANGER RAE (10:19):
Excuse me. My name is Ranger Rae and I was
wondering if you picked anyLichens from the rainforest.

HIKER (10:25):
Lichens? I don't even know what a lichen is.

ROXY (10:28):
It's a moss-like substance that grows on trees and rocks
and...

HIKER (10:32):
You mean this stuff?
I just took a bit of it. I justwanted to draw it.

ROXY (10:38):
Draw it?

HIKER (10:39):
Yeah, I'm an artist and I love coming to Borrowdale
Rainforest. It's got some of themost amazing nature views in all
of Britain. Here's one I didearlier.

FOX (10:48):
It's quite good.

RANGER RAE (10:49):
That's very nice, but Lichens are a very special
part of the rainforestecosystem. They might look like
moss, but really they're acombination of fungus and algae.
From now on, could you draw theLichens while leaving them where
they belong?

HIKER (11:05):
Of course. I didn't realise I was disturbing nature
by taking them.

RANGER RAE (11:08):
As long as we know for next time. Now it's getting
very dark. We'd better get home.

HIKER (11:13):
But how are we going to find our way out?

MOLE (11:15):
Worms!

ALL (11:16):
Not now, Mole!

MOLE (11:18):
No, not those worms. I mean the other worms.

RANGER RAE (11:22):
What other worms?

MOLE (11:23):
I met some very special worms earlier and they might be
able to help us find a way. Hangon, I'll ask them. (Whispering.)

FOX (11:33):
What is that Mole up to?

RANGER RAE (11:35):
We can never be sure.

MOLE (11:37):
They said yes. Hang on, should be something happening in
three, two, one.

ALL (11:44):
Wow.

RANGER RAE (11:47):
Looks like Mole befriended some Glow Worms.

ROXY (11:51):
They're so pretty. The rainforest really becomes a
different place at night time.

RANGER RAE (11:57):
Everywhere does. Nature has a whole world that
only comes out at night.

MOLE (12:01):
The worms say they'll light a path out of the forest
for us.

RANGER RAE (12:05):
Thanks, Glow Worms. You're amazing.

HIKER (12:07):
Sorry, am I going mad or can you communicate with
animals?

RANGER RAE (12:11):
Oh yes, it's a whole thing.
All right, folks, we made it outof the rainforest. I think it's
time all of us non-nocturnalcreatures went home and got some
rest.

ROXY (12:24):
Thanks for all the help, Owl. And you too, Glow Worms.
Three cheers for a job welldone.
Hip hip! Hooray!
Hip hip! Hooray!
Hip hip!

CUCKOO (12:35):
Well done everybody, we did it! Yeah, three cheers for
your old pal, Cuckoo, whoop,whoop.

FOX (12:41):
You didn't help us. You tricked us into thinking that
nest was yours.

MOLE (12:45):
And you gave us eggs to mind and never took them back.

OWL (12:48):
You really should start minding your own eggs, Cuckoo.

CUCKOO (12:52):
But I'm so busy! Do you guys have any idea how busy I
am? It's not fair. How about weall go back to my nest and
celebrate a job well done?

FOX (13:00):
No, it's not even your nest.

RANGER RAE (13:02):
(Awooooooo) As much as we'd love to, Cuckoo, it
sounds like somebody else needsour help. Come on, Wildlifers,
off we go!
