Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Pass podcast. The Ravens had
to practice today is they also trimmed the roster to
fifty three players this afternoon. After today's practice, we had
a chance to hear from quarterbacks coach t Martin.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Obviously, preseason over.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Now, you guys, get on me whatever.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
You want to do.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
How does this kind of ramp up a week different
from what you've been doing up.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
To this point.

Speaker 4 (00:30):
This is the slowest week of training camp. You know,
you've played the last preseason game, you see the first
game right in front of you, but you kind of
have to keep working but slow down at the same time.
So we've been popping out of our skin to get
ready for the actual week of preparation, but at the
same time really proud of what we accomplished doing training camp.
Actually a lot of the starters didn't play in the games,

(00:53):
but competing against our starting defense each and every day,
the kind of looks we got, how we were challenged.
Just speaking at the quarterback position. Uh, we came a
long way, you know, just finished talking to the guys
about how proud I am of them from where we
started to where we finished. And at this point is
our eyes on Buffalo and getting ready to go.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
You know, my part continue quarters.

Speaker 5 (01:18):
You know, just what did you see progression wise from Cooper?
As he got more come kids, that's off you'll continue
to ramp up.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
During the pre season.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yeah, Cooper, he did an amazing job, you know, just
coming in first of all, not missing the day during
the off season of OTA's Medicam Football school. Was here
for every rep, got tons of reps, and early on
we addressed some things that he wanted to get better at,
you know, just just moving within the pocket to extend plays, uh,

(01:47):
accuracy in all areas of the field. Some things that
you know, just showed up on tape that we attacked.
And he did a heck of a job, you know,
with his body, you know, embracing our strength and conditioning program.
Here was Scott and his staff embracing that, the culture
here and how we work and how we get after it.
I think he appreciates that and uh and ultimately how

(02:08):
he played in the preseason, you know, and so the
film every day speaks for himself. I thought he was
very consistent in everything protections, running the offense, finding completions
and moving the ball ultimately scoring points.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
And I'm really proud of that.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
I think he understands the offense and and he's ready
to roll for the season.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Lamar talked several times got wanted to be more local, and.

Speaker 5 (02:33):
You know, talking to coaching, we needed to pull Great
Blewis side and you know, offensive line coach, is that
something did you encourage or you think you realized naturally
as part of his comfort in the offense and his
kind of progression in his.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Career, Yeah, I think I think it's more about Lamar.
You know, it's about maturity and the progression of his career.
Like you said, you know, he's at a point where
you know, he's seen a lot, He's experienced a lot.
We've had two back to back years, some really really
tough losses that end of the season in a way
that you know, we don't want to end the season.
And if you know Lamar, I got to know him competitively,

(03:08):
he's probably thought about that every day, every minute during
off season, and so that comes with a sense of
urgency and a sense of purpose. And he started training
camp that way, you know, speaking with the team, probably
meeting to it where he spoke from his heart, and
he's been leading that way every day.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
It hadn't been a day where.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
His communication hadn't gone to the next level. His performance,
his level of work, his level of everything. We talk
about the things that we don't see on the field
that he has up to his game in a lot
of areas. And I'm really proud of that, of that maturation, honestly,
and so I give him all the credit though, you know,
he he he is growing at his own pace and
it's beautiful to see.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
That.

Speaker 5 (03:49):
Uh, every conversation with var for either winning with the conversation, is.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
That your interaction?

Speaker 4 (03:59):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, Uh, it's uh, it's all about
that he's competing at everything, you know, and and he's
the realist, you know, in the game in terms of
being one hundred percent who he is.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
And uh, and he loves his teammates. They love him.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
But like you said that that conversation can go anywhere,
but ultimately it's going to get back to Winnie, you know.
And so uh, we all want to be that way
and we've got our leader, you know.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Is that way that put ours on He says things
that probably no other quarterback can do.

Speaker 6 (04:31):
What is the difference for you when you take in
touching Cooper.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
When he's running.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
Everyone is different and you have to coach them to
their strengths and weaknesses. And ultimately, at the end of
the day, we're all trying to get better at everything,
and so there's a general conversation that we're all searching
for and we're all chasing as a quarterback unit. But
then to your point, there are things that Lamar uh,
there are certain individual drills that are put in for

(04:58):
Lamar specifically, and everyone else has to catch up right
and then like getting ready for the preseason game, then
it turns towards Cooper and Devin getting them ready to
go out and have a really good performance. And so
that's a great question in the sense of Lamar is
so different than the backup quarterback. But ultimately you teach
to you know, the starter, and everyone else gets it

(05:21):
by osmosis, and ultimately you have a better group if
you do it that way.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Come back to aside from the markings, were vocal kind
of stood out to you as you've watched this progression
over the past six weeks.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Right the vocal communication in the details that he's discussing,
you know, things were talking about the play, Hey, you
could do that you can do this. But now it's
the attention to detail and getting things exactly the way
he wants to, whether it's around, whether it's a protection
he checked to something, could I have checked to something different? Uh,

(05:57):
the conversation has more depth and uh, it's it's it's
good you know to see that, and it makes for
great conversations in our meetings, and it makes for growth
in our system because sometimes he suggesting that. As coaches
we see it one way, but he's the he's the
quarterback out there playing, and so we listen to him.
Todd has done a great job of taking his suggestions

(06:19):
and implement them into our system, whether it's a play
or just a way to tweak a play, and and
and and nine times out of tall, Lamor is right.
And so it's a great relationship that's been developed during
training camp this year.

Speaker 5 (06:35):
You're a supposed to com as anybody you know or
how mary, you know that there are a lot to follow.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
When you have a game about some.

Speaker 5 (06:44):
Game and just give him a time and you kind
of check in with him in the off season.

Speaker 4 (06:50):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely frequent check ins and during the
off season. It's about the person, you know, he's a
he's a father, he's a human, he's a son, he's
a a brother.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
You know.

Speaker 4 (07:01):
He he's Lamar Jackson to the world too. So a
lot of conversations offseasons about that. And then once we
get training camp, we're locked in early in camp about
just all getting better. You know, we're in the installation phase,
we're in the growth and development phase. And then once
the game start. About two weeks ago, I just got
this sense that he was ready to play the first game.

(07:21):
You know, he was just popping around the way he
you know, came out for pre practice, the way he
was working the individual I was like, this is mid season,
Lamar right here.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
And we hadn't even played a game yet.

Speaker 4 (07:33):
So at that moment, for me, it's about keeping him
sharp in the meetings, keeping them interested in the meetings
where he knows he's not going to play in the
preseason game, but ultimately keeping him sharp for the first game.
And so I have to do some magic tricks sometimes
in meetings to keep his attention.

Speaker 2 (07:49):
But he supports the guys.

Speaker 4 (07:52):
You know, he's a football guy, so he's always you know,
watching every rep for the preseason games. You know, when
he doesn't really have to, but he's in there, you know,
helping other guys with what they can do better.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
Obviously we're moving past twenty twenty four, but could you
send any disappointment from him that it wasn't that like
his success and the team success wasn't recognized with that MVP.
And was there any more disappointment with you considering.

Speaker 6 (08:18):
Just how historical year was.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
Yeah, the nun verbal communication of the way he attacks
practice and the way that he reported to trade account
with that sense of urgency says all that needs to
be said. You know what's understood that needs to be spoken,
you know, And so I just look at it that way.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
You know, we went to work. What happened in the past,
we all learned.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
From it, we all grew from it, and that affected
everyone in a positive way to where our approach about
this season is going to be different because of it.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Right, Thank you guys, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
We also heard from senior secondary coach Chuck Pagana.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
How are we doing?

Speaker 3 (09:02):
We all know how intelligent is how much do you
sense or get beyond how that translations.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
And what?

Speaker 6 (09:14):
You always throw these trick questions at Mane. I can't
figure them out.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
I'm college one.

Speaker 6 (09:19):
I mean, it's more than all this, But.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
How does that help him be a football player on
the field?

Speaker 2 (09:24):
How is it helping more.

Speaker 6 (09:26):
Of the most I think guys like Kyle, some guys
that were here before Kyle, guys like ed per Se,
they pick up the defense so fast and they're out
there and they're not thinking about our calls, they're not
thinking about our scheme. Now early on probably year one,

(09:47):
year two, but right now where he's at in the
phase of his football life, what he's doing is diagnosing
the situation. He knows the down and distance, he knows
the personnel group that's in the huddle. He can see
and recognize the formation. So he's one step ahead. And
so like Eddie, you know, you just don't fall into

(10:08):
sixty three or sixty four interceptions and get a gold jacket.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
Right.

Speaker 6 (10:11):
Everybody's like, you know, how does he do it? You
know it's preparation. So you know, Kyle, behind the scenes,
he prepares is as good as anybody who watches a
ton of films. So he's got, you know, most every
play kind of whittled down to one or two plays
in every situation. So gives him a chance to make place.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
The defensive backs and talks about how they've been getting
together off the field to watch film.

Speaker 6 (10:37):
And they just you know, hang outs and all that stuff.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
But I know Ed was a huge.

Speaker 6 (10:42):
Guy that way, getting the guys together.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
How important can that be?

Speaker 6 (10:45):
Yeah, I think it's it's about the brotherhood, as they
as they say, as we say, and I think that's
that's huge. I think, you know, the game is one thing,
but those relationships we always talk about this game is
gonna fade at one point for you know, all of
us that are coaching and playing, but the relationships are
for life. So I think that bond, breaking bread, doing

(11:05):
things outside the building, getting to know somebody, not just
the football player.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
This is what they do.

Speaker 6 (11:11):
It's not necessarily like who they are as human beings.
So I love the fact that they get together and
they spend time and you know, we're hoping as coaches
that some of that time is being devoted to football
and they're watching tape together and breaking bread, which I
know they're doing. So it's just one of those things.
The closer, the more you invest, you're going to do

(11:34):
everything within your power not to let your teammate down,
let your brother down and so as you continue to
build those relationships, that bond just gets greater and greater. So, yeah,
they have to make a decisions obviously.

Speaker 5 (11:48):
I mean hour, you've been around a lot of good.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Football players over the years.

Speaker 5 (11:53):
How pleased were you with just the talent level as
a whole and the defensive.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
Factor you will?

Speaker 6 (11:58):
Yeah, So thirty seventh year in coaching, nineteenth in the
National Football League, this is as good a group as
I've been around in those nineteen years in the National
Football League. One thing they don't miss like talent levels,
you know, but they don't miss on like the football
character of the guys that come in here. So top

(12:18):
to bottom, Yeah, it is a tough day. There's gonna
be some tough conversation to be had. We're gonna have
to say goodbye to a lot of really good football players.
But the guys that are here are here. The guys
that won't be they've done enough and put enough good
stuff out there on tape. We always tell them when
they come in that, you know, the reality is, we

(12:39):
got ninety here, only fifty three make it. So you know,
you're trying to make this team in thirty thirty one others.
So they've always done a great job here e DC
and the personnel guys that bringing in a great group
of guys that you know, they love football. Their football
character is off the charts, and yeah, we're going to

(13:00):
have say goodbye to a bunch of good players.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Were you tired up for Martin on Saturday?

Speaker 6 (13:03):
I mean it was obviously one of those guys who's
making e Lite push to be on the team. Yeah,
he's done it all preseason, right, every single game. It's like,
you know, who is this kid? He just shows up
and he makes plays. He's he's so instinctive, he's so smart,
his football savvy, his football IQ is off the charts.
You know, you see him walk in the building and

(13:24):
there's no way you're thinking, okay, he's working in it,
you know, or something or breaking tape down for somebody.
And surely he can't be putting pads on and going
intercepting footballs for touchdown National Football League. But at a
buck sixty, I think he is Buck sixty six. Maybe
he'll say he's Buck seventy, but he can't be. He
can't be. But yeah, he's Uh, he's a tremendous player.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
He did a great job.

Speaker 5 (13:47):
So what Ben and I do you think the grades
that you guys have up in the position where he's
kind of had on the team, the competition and position
groups or whatever.

Speaker 6 (13:56):
I think the grades, yeah, I think you know, from
a motivation stand, guys want to be recognized, you know,
And I think when you go in there, you know
what you do out here on the practice fille, which
you put on tape, and then you're getting recognized, especially
in front of your peers. I think it's I think
it's really good. And then the other thing is, you know,

(14:18):
if you're not doing good and you're making some mistakes
and some bad things are happening, that's going to get
posted too. So you don't want to be that guy
for sure. But anytime you can walk into a room
and you can see your name at the top of
a leaderboard in one of those impactful categories, I think
that's I think that's great.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Where have you seen Maliki starts should.

Speaker 6 (14:37):
Be growth there treating probably these last I mean, he's
been awesome the whole time, but I think the game's
really slowed down for him. He's done a great job
and picked up our defense. So, like I talked, about
Kyle earlier. He's now starting to be able to take
the next step. He's you know, level one hundred, you know,

(14:57):
level two hundred. Now he's getting in the three hundred
level cos verses and being able to play a lot faster,
play situations, better played down in distances, personnel groups, all
those kind of things. So the game's really slowing down
for him. He's just just a natural, you know, back there,
so really really smart guy.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
You now have Derek Henry.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
He's on your side there, many years was on the
opposite side. What would you tell your defenders on you know,
how to bring down there?

Speaker 6 (15:27):
Yeah, there's one thing that's pretty much the same size
on every man, and that's the ankles, you know, So
hit him low, slide down, get the ankles together, and
hang on for dear life, you know, because if you
get those feet wrapped up and those ankles wrapped up,
you got a chance to get him on the ground.
So you better get to him before he gets rolling,
you know. So yeah, good luck. It's like I tell

(15:49):
my wife when she's headed to the beauty salon, you know,
good luck.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
I didn't mean that she's gonna kill me. She's gonna
kill me for that on the other side of the ball.

Speaker 5 (16:05):
Like a DeAndre Hopkin. He's just like, what is the
kind of frustration level for thed to know that you
can do everything right and still someone like you coming
to quarterback?

Speaker 2 (16:13):
Right?

Speaker 6 (16:14):
They frustrated us for a long long time being in
the AFC South, having to go against him all those years.
You know, he's just so crafty and such a great
route runner and so savvy, and he knows every trick
in the book on how to get open, how to
create separation. You can cover him like a like a
blanket and he can still come.

Speaker 2 (16:35):
Down with the ball.

Speaker 6 (16:35):
So it's great for our guys because they know if
they can, you know, line up against him and practice
and do a good job and hold him down and
make a play you know here and there, and then
you know, from a you know, just to have a
chance to sit down with him and say, Okay, what
what are you seeing? What am I giving away from
a technique standpoint, a leverage standpoint? What am I doing

(16:56):
wrong in press against you? What can you tell me about?

Speaker 2 (17:00):
Uh?

Speaker 6 (17:00):
You know this guy that you played with, There's there's
so much knowledge and so much wisdom there to be had.
But but certainly he's he's great. He's great for our
guys to go against and leading up to, you know,
playing opponents.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Irvin Larry is one of those young guys. He's made
a bunch of plays all summer. You know it was
a huge's very high. What's stood out to you the
most about and as you've watched him over.

Speaker 6 (17:23):
Courts it consistency. Yeah, he just every single day you
knew exactly what you're gonna get. And uh, he's one
of those guys that you know, first in the building,
last to leave. From day one, he was asking all
the right questions. He takes care of himself, He takes
care of his body. He's not gonna be one of
those guys that walks out on the field is not prepared,

(17:45):
not doesn't know what he's what he's gonna do. So
he's just been a you know, a model consistency since
he's been there, and you know that preparation shows up.
Thank you, guys, Thank you.
