Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Pass Podcast. It's Saturday, August ninth,
and the Ravens just got off the field for training
camp practice. We had a chance to hear from a
few members of the secondary, but first up, head coach
John Hardwall, all.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Right, good to see everybody.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Appreciate everybody being here, really good spirity, practice, very intense,
which is great two days after a game. And then
I thought, pretty darn sharp, this is an important stretch.
This particular part of camp is really about taking that
execution to a level. And that's really what we're intentional
about writing now and everything we do, getting as good

(00:41):
as we can at what we do, how we do it.
So we had a good game, tape was good. We're
in a great place. I think we're right on schedule.
Now we have to take the next step and have
a really good week of practice here.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
I mean to see that end practice.

Speaker 5 (00:55):
Is that something you do.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
We've done it in camp here once or twice.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
We did at the stadium, and then one time before
sister our third time doing it.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Uh yes, our fourth quarter pass rush drill, pass protection drill.

Speaker 6 (01:08):
We don't remember.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Encircling up that closed right, we did that at the stadium.
But we didn't do it the first day here right right.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
I made that ramped it up right, The stakes definitely
go up. It was fun. It's a fun drill. Yeah,
that's that's a that's been a good drill.

Speaker 5 (01:25):
Mitchell, come on briefly going on for Rest. They do
any update on him?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Yeah, No, the guys that went out here, Keaton, Kyle,
and TJ do not have serious injuries.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
So just we're ready to go today.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Uh, Kean Martin another one didn't go today.

Speaker 4 (01:44):
So the other day.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah, I agree with that.

Speaker 3 (01:52):
I mean, I'm Jalen has been been that kind of
guy who plays can play really every position. I'm pretty
confident you can play safety if when we put him
back there.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
But he plays all three corner spots and knows what
he's doing. Uh. And he's had a really good camp.

Speaker 7 (02:11):
Obviously watched a lot of football with you know, Derek Henry.
Does I mean he's going up the rankings right now
among the whole time great rushers.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
I mean with his style.

Speaker 5 (02:20):
Does is there any comparable thing for him?

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, I'm sure there are.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
They probably think of one or two off the top
of my head, but really I would probably compare them
all to Dereck Henry at this point.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
You know, That's how I look at it. Pretty impressed.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
I just the player, you know, having to having seen
him from both sides, having to defense him, and the
now having him on our side and having him run
the offense that we kind of set up for him,
and and see how versatile he is, knowing that he
can do these different things that he's doing in this
offense that he hadn't done before.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Very impressive.

Speaker 8 (02:54):
Kind of yanked the whole line there of one after
the cross starts.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Is that just yeah, cup line? The second line? Yeah, yeah, right,
I mean that was it was early, kind of early
in practice. We had like three and three out of
four or something like that, so we started over and
then the next period I think after that, we yanked
them all.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
So that's what we did. Seemed effective, cleaned it up
after that.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Did you notice it seemed like it worked for the
most part, making guys run last?

Speaker 2 (03:27):
Is that what you would did?

Speaker 3 (03:29):
We've done it before. We've done it before, we did
it before I ever done that. There's a lot of options.
There's lot of it.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
We could have to do log roles.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
We've done that in the past. That was more college.
We had down patrol. We used to make them run
stadium steps. Not enough steps out here, Though'll make it
make it worthwhile. Updowns. Updowns always is a good punishment drill.
We can make them do updowns. So we've got lots
of options.

Speaker 5 (03:52):
But the media.

Speaker 7 (03:53):
Suggests across the line people, that's right.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
You guys are off sides. You're off sides when you
when you'd love to see these guys do updowns. I
think we're onto something you have been doing across the life. Hey, Jamison,
thank you for that. They've been known to cross the
line a few times. Thank you, Javis. I give Jamison

(04:24):
Hensley quote for that. But you see, yeah, really uh
really uh I would Ally has had to say pleasantly surprised.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I mean, I have to say, you know, I hate
to say it because he's he's.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
A heck of a player in college too, but come
out here and play at the level he has uh
on point b be uh No.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
What he's doing so well has been really really impressing me.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
He's played every position, he played all three corner spots,
he's played both safety positions.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
So can't wait to see him in Dallas. And see
how he plays down there.

Speaker 6 (04:55):
A couple of receivers make plays and practice that they
weren't necessarily able in the game. How would you evaluate
the receivers from this past game considering how rough the
pass the game was? Was it tough to evaluate the receivers?

Speaker 2 (05:09):
I guess, well, yeah, of course, of course.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
I mean how many chances did they have to catch passes?

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Now? I value it in blocking. You know, you can
evaluate the route running. Of course, we great all that.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
I just to evaluate everything you can evaluate, you know,
But like your question is how you evaluate when they
don't get passes, you know, throwing or accurately or whatever. Yeah,
I mean obviously it's impossible probably to evaluate that part
of it. A couple of good catches though, I mean
a couple guys made some great catches.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
How about Western had a great catch? So to your.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Point, they just you can't. I mean that kind of
that kind of game is like you go, what are
you gonna do? You just go, Wow, that's kind of
shocking to throw it for that few yards, So, you know,
I hope you never see that again.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
A lot is an.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
How did you see your pass?

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Yeah, Cooper and Devon, I thought they practiced well today.
You know Cooper, I mean Cooper, Cooper didn't have too
many chances to do much.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
So I'm not really down on Cooper.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
The first pick he throws, he throws a a box
fade up. Uh, now it gets a big corner and
guy makes a nice play. Yeah, I'm not in love
with it, but but that's really the play.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Uh And it's not like it's a bad pass. And
then the other ones.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
You know, Devin just didn't have a good day, you know,
and he'll be the first to tell you that. So
you got to bounce back. I mean, you gotta come
back today and have a good day, which he did. So, Uh,
that's just football.

Speaker 8 (06:50):
Yeah, you know, going into the first game, obviously he
didn't play many of the starters.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
Is there any chance you could play more World starters
in Dallas?

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Or is that's still kind of cup to be conte Yeah,
I think we'll just wait and see. I'm kind of
relying a little bit.

Speaker 3 (07:06):
We're having conversations with the leaders about that throughout. Uh,
see how the week practice goes this week, See how
we feel about it toward you know, like Wednesday is
see how we feel about it.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
All right, good, Thanks, Next up cornerback Cheetlebay a woozy.

Speaker 5 (07:29):
Here, you see, how do you feel like you were
settling in the champions and you getting your hands.

Speaker 6 (07:32):
In a lot of balls.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
How I feel like it's going for you so far?

Speaker 9 (07:34):
Yeah, it's been fun. You know, any day anytime you
get to play football. You know, I'm in nine years now,
so you know, you're definitely, uh, just grateful to be
on this field and to deal with a great set
of guys a place where it has a great culture.
So it's surely a blessing and just enjoying every second
of it.

Speaker 10 (07:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (07:52):
Talking since you came here, Flick sort and threw year
to year in terms that I in terms of just.

Speaker 9 (07:58):
The fifth year and stuff, it was interesting. You know,
I had an opportunity to uh have options. But when
I talk to coach Harball or my agent told me
that Ravens were calling, there was something in my heart
that was like Ravens. Like it was like a little
bit of like intimidating but also excitement, you know, like
just surrounding the culture of that they've built here and

(08:19):
uh like that was like it was like a gut
feeling that just told me to run after it, and
obviously talking to Harball, you know, had a chance to
talk to some guys like Marlon Nandi Madobke, and there's
some players that have played here previously and you know
they all said the same thing. So it was just
really that gut feeling that made me want to just
run towards here. And it's been grateful for Oh.

Speaker 4 (08:39):
It's been amazing. You know, he's from Voulder, so.

Speaker 9 (08:41):
I went to college and Voter, so that we have
a special connection there. You know, he's a football guy
obviously being a head coach, being around DBS for a
long time, wealth of knowledge, wealth of experience, and he
keeps things light.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
You know.

Speaker 9 (08:54):
Chuck's a guy that you know everybody in the room
can lean on for just a good vibe and also
just great coach. So he's been he's been amazing.

Speaker 5 (09:04):
It's just a louted with talent.

Speaker 8 (09:05):
You know, after I sent years after you just what's
it like with so many other talents to put the
Max crown.

Speaker 9 (09:11):
It's it's like a standard that we're trying to build.
You know, it's an opportunity to be great. You know,
we're basically great on paper right now, and we all
know that, but we know that there's a long road
to actually be great. You know, a lot of time
spent in the film room, a lot of time spent
off the field building that chemistry. You know, we've been
talking already about, you know, starting to figure out how
we're gonna be watching film during the season and stuff

(09:33):
like that. So I think there's a lot of things
that we could pick each other's brains just in the
whole unit. You know what I'm saying. We've all come
from been pretty successful in our careers, so this opportunity
to be great, but we know that it's gonna take
a lot to get there.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
What terrification of this organization from Afar and how white
it be different.

Speaker 7 (09:53):
Than you are.

Speaker 9 (09:54):
Yeah, I guess, like you know, I'm a nineties baby,
and I guess we're getting old now or something. But
you know, when I grew up, you know, seeing Ray Lewis,
ed Ree, Terrell Suggs, you know the offenses they had,
and Kumbolden, you know, a whole bunch of Steve Smith.
You know, there's so many great players and running backs.
It's always been like a standard. Like I said, you know,
you play Madden, it's like oh, using the Ravens. Bro Like, oh,

(10:15):
you can't use the Ravens. It's like it's like cheating almost,
you know what I'm saying. So it's like they have
that like that aura about the team, you know what
I'm saying, and then you put on the black jerseys.
I've played here Sunday night on the other side when
I was on the Bengals, and just like, dang, this
is crazy, you know. So you know, being on this
side of it, you know again, it's really exciting. It's
a real opportunity, like I said, and I don't want

(10:36):
to take it for granted.

Speaker 7 (10:37):
So, yeah, did you have to go against Garrick Henry? Yes,
I have, so now your teammates with me. But what's
it like when you have to go against Yeah, he's
one of those players. You know, there's certain players in
this league where you think about them the week before,
you know, like yeah, like certain players you know have
gardenered that respect where you're like, okay, maybe you spend like,

(10:59):
you know, ten minutes just in the meeting.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
You know, you have to game plan for them.

Speaker 9 (11:03):
He's one of those guys where you see them on
the schedule, they're like, Okay, like you have to get
ready to tackle that week or you know there's gonna
be a certain game plan to try to try to
stop him.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
But being on this side is lovely.

Speaker 9 (11:14):
Obviously we get to face him in camping and practice,
but we know that, you know, he's definitely gonna have
to be game planned for against other teams, and yeah,
it's always it's always a wealth of respect for him, so.

Speaker 5 (11:26):
To a slip for him against him.

Speaker 9 (11:28):
There's actually a clip I think twenty twenty one when
I was on the Bengals we played the Titans, i
think in the divisional round, and he tried to.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
Fit it out there. He didn't get me though, but
he tried. He tried.

Speaker 9 (11:40):
But yeah, yeah, definitely my life lasts. You know, you
don't want to end up on Twitter for the wrong reasons.
So yeah, I guess I'm still fitting in. You know,
I think everybody he's uh personality starting to show for real.

(12:03):
You know, Jira came and just a verse the energy
for real, and you know we already had Marlin. Everybody's
just really like starting to jail together. And I'll say,
I don't know where I fit, Like I just I
just exist. Yeah, Like I'm a fun guy, but you know,
I'm also serious when I need to be. So yeah,
I think everybody the good. The good thing about it
is that you can see that we're all bouncing off
each other, and everybody's energy is bouncing off each other.

(12:24):
And when you do that, you make plays, you start
to celebrate like it's just gonna keep building.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
So we've obviously we.

Speaker 9 (12:36):
Hang out when we're in the locker room and uh,
you know in meetings. We actually went to Jayr's house
like maybe last week and just you know, we all
kicked it. He ain't had no activities for us, but
you know, we all just hung out as and feasts
and wings, play some card games.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
Watch some shows and stuff.

Speaker 9 (12:52):
It just it was it was a good vibe and
it kind of showed like everybody was there. You know,
some some teams, some guys, you know, maybe they have
stuff to do and dah da dah dah, but you
could tell that it matters to everybody to try to
get close with each other.

Speaker 8 (13:03):
What was your impression of Johnny ear versus Navior your expectation?

Speaker 9 (13:08):
I guess, oh no, I always knew Ra was nice,
regardless if he played here or not, Like like he's
been nice.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
Yeah. So I remember when I was on the h
my first got drafted.

Speaker 9 (13:19):
I was on the Cowboys and he was coming out
I think twenty eighteen or nineteen eighteen. Yeah, the draft
was in Dallas, so I got I got a chance
to meet him like back then, and he just has
this confidence about him. You know, it's real confidence and
it's infectious. Like when he's on your side, like he
kind of lets everybody be at rest because he's he's
gonna be the one who has the energy. He's gonna

(13:39):
be the one who's prepared, so everybody can kind of
just relax knowing that you have a guy like that
on your team on your side.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
So some training cute, dude? Do you feel it just was?

Speaker 7 (13:48):
It?

Speaker 5 (13:48):
Just does it?

Speaker 7 (13:49):
It was as seamless as it looks for you.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Out there, you know from us watching you from now.

Speaker 9 (13:54):
Honestly, I mean it's just health really, like you know,
this is just health. I think the past couple of
years having some struggle for my health, but now you
know this this training stuff is done an amazing job
with me, uh, you know, working with me getting me
capable and confident with my body and going out there
and just you know, trying new things. Obviously it's practice,
so you're trying new things, trying new techniques, working through

(14:16):
different defenses, working on chemistry and all that stuff. So
I don't know if it's good or not, but I
just you know, I know that with more repetitions it's
gonna get there.

Speaker 8 (14:26):
So, yeah, is there anything you've got to change?

Speaker 4 (14:29):
Two different I like.

Speaker 9 (14:31):
To avan injury dealing with them perhaps, Yeah, I've always
been pretty on top of my body. But I would
say just you know, you kind of fit into a
bucket when you have soft tissue injuries or stuff like that.
You know what I'm saying, like, you have to get
you have to be preventative, you can't be reactive.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
So just not only just doing.

Speaker 9 (14:52):
The hot tap, cold tub, you know the regular stuff
normatics like really pinpointing key areas on your body to
prevent injuries. You know, that's been something that's the tren
and stuff and I have been working on.

Speaker 8 (15:01):
So, uh, playing last year for a general races coming
here obviously at Ravens System, do you notice some of
the connective fission you know between to see.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
Baltimore Wars are like going from any other teams that
I'm not your team.

Speaker 9 (15:14):
The Yeah, very similar defense and obviously they know there's
a there's a wealth of respect for coach Dennar Wilson too,
he's over there, you know, great energy, a great leader.
But yeah, I mean a lot of the defensive concepts
are a lot similar, a lot of the ways they
approach the meetings, the energy, the approach. You know, you
could tell that he was trying to bring that there
after being here. Now it's like, okay, this is like

(15:35):
and and again, this is Baltimore Ravens team. This is
a standard and a coach of to follow, you know,
around the NFL like this, this this tree has produced
a lot of great players, great coaches, great systems, and
uh you know rightfully, so people are gonna bring that
wherever they go. So and I'm blessed to now be
a part of that, you know what I'm saying. And
I feel like, you know, no one understanding what trained
like a raven means, play like a raven, all that stuff,

(15:57):
you know it really it really resonates with your soul.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
So yeah, definitely some similarities there. One love, One love,
Thank you God.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
Finally, cornerback Jalen R.

Speaker 5 (16:08):
More Davis.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
How are you doing?

Speaker 8 (16:14):
You feel like your best four years?

Speaker 4 (16:20):
I would think so.

Speaker 10 (16:21):
I mean, I always want wherever I'm at now to
be the best I met, so I always want to
be better than any other year before now. So I
would say, so, you know, just continuing to find something
new to work on every day, staying consistent, staying available, uh,
you know, and just showing up, you know, you know,
from there on, God take care of the rest. So
you know, I'm happy right now availabilities.

Speaker 5 (16:44):
There's something that's different, change that you live.

Speaker 10 (16:50):
Yeah, man, Really, my entire off season was dedicated towards that,
whether it was change from nutrition, workout routine. I believe
just the team that I have around me, from my
trainer to my pilates teacher to management, everything that's around me,
I think has been very healthy for me this offseason
and I've seen great results from it. So being able

(17:12):
to continue to do those things throughout the season and
even building on top of that is something that's still
the main goal for me. And that's another area that
I'm happy where I'm at right now.

Speaker 4 (17:21):
So good progress.

Speaker 5 (17:23):
I'm sure you get some some safety reaps earlier reporting,
you know, does that help? Having the physitional flexibility.

Speaker 8 (17:31):
Do you feel like, is that something you can, you know,
in a pinch play that play at cerrole or for sure?

Speaker 10 (17:36):
I mean, I'm never gonna say no to an opportunity
to play on this defense. So if that's where the
coaches think that I will be able to excel at,
then I'm gonna give that a shot. And it obviously
helps just knowing almost safety would be the last position
for me to complete in the secondary, so at that point,
really understanding the entire defense, knowing what everyone's job is,

(17:57):
so whenever it's my turn to be in a certain spot,
I understand what everyone else is doing, which helps me,
you know, be able to just on the fly, be
able to plug and play at any point in time.
And you know, I've viewed as a great thing that
my coaches trust me to be able to plug and
play anywhere. Of course, I want to be able to
develop into a spot and grow into it, but never

(18:18):
going to turn down the opportunity to step into the
field for sure.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
How over the rookie year ends up putting the injury
a couple other injuries, or what's the biggest.

Speaker 7 (18:30):
Challenge for you year to year when that keep happening.

Speaker 10 (18:35):
I mean, I think every challenge is different and their
own different ways. I mean, they've all been setbacks in
some ways, but I don't really approach any of them
the same and don't really look forward to them at
all in the future because I don't want anymore. So,
I mean every situation was different. I was able to
learn something different from it, whether it was something I
could have done differently, or just a lesson that I

(18:57):
could learn in that moment to prevent something going for
or just you know, just a moment to learn from
where my feet are. So I think my main focus
is being wherever my feet are in that moment, even
if it's something I don't like, or even if it's
something I love, and just finding the best thing out
of it and continue to push forward. So that's just
my mindset all the time.

Speaker 8 (19:17):
Were the injuries, you know, either the compilation of them
or in the last year, was that or to deal
with mentally and at some point some level and did
you have to do something to kind of get over that?

Speaker 10 (19:32):
Yeah, I mean it's always tough having to watch watching
the game that you love watching, you know, something that
you dream of since you was a child. That's always
the toughest thing, you know, not being around your teammates consistently,
you know, not being out at practice, even the days
that are hard and the days that you feel like
suck or the days that you missed the most when

(19:53):
you're not out there. So it's always tough mentally and
of course physically because you got to get back to
where you are then figure out how to get stronger
so it doesn't happen again. But I mean, I have
a great support system.

Speaker 4 (20:04):
You know.

Speaker 10 (20:04):
My family supports me very well, my mom, my, sisters,
my daughters, everyone around me. I have great people that
I can lean on whenever I need them to or
whenever I need to, and and my teammates and the
people around this building. So I'm very grateful for everyone
around me to figure out ways to continue to go
forward when it's tough.

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Your core and your knowledge of the defense and everything
from a pure just being able to cover a guy.

Speaker 5 (20:29):
When you're out there and that you are can help.
How do you How strong do you feel and incompetent
in your abilities to do that?

Speaker 10 (20:36):
Oh that was saying I wouldn't be here if I
didn't think that. I wouldn't be here if they didn't
think I could do that, So that's never a doubt
at all. Just be available, believing myself, go out there
and let it go.

Speaker 9 (20:51):
I'm not hearing.

Speaker 5 (20:55):
Speed that oh I was.

Speaker 10 (21:00):
And I think being around Coach Chuck is just a blessing.
You know, someone that's so smart, so intelligent, and just
eager to teach, you know.

Speaker 4 (21:09):
What I mean.

Speaker 10 (21:10):
He just loves being around the guys. He loves teaching people.
He just loves to see improvement. And to have someone
like that behind you, that really believes in you and
wants to push you forward, it's nothing but a blessing.
And it's been a joy to be around him.

Speaker 4 (21:25):
I love being around him every day.

Speaker 10 (21:26):
He'll text you at any point in time and I'm
always welcome there. I'm always ready for that. So you know,
I love being around both him and Double D Man.
It's it's a great, great blessing for sure. I don't
I don't want to put that out, but one thousand percent,
you know, I feel like I learned something from from
him almost every day.

Speaker 4 (21:46):
Really, you know, it's.

Speaker 10 (21:47):
Never really a review, it's all he always has a
new point of new something to look at on the
smallest thing. So you know, I love it.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
Your latest you've gotten a text from that.

Speaker 4 (22:00):
Might be anywhere around like three am or so.

Speaker 10 (22:04):
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only DV that'll say that,
But I mean that's great. I mean when you have
someone that's that dedicated to you know, you watching a
play of yours, whether it was good or bad play,
and and send it to you and have tips on it.
You know, what what else was you want as a
player from your coach.

Speaker 5 (22:22):
Before coach Chuck has gone better or as he sketched?

Speaker 4 (22:25):
That is a good question.

Speaker 10 (22:26):
I don't know. I have no idea, but he gets
it done.

Speaker 8 (22:32):
You're a pretty loading any guy.

Speaker 5 (22:33):
What's been your fresh GI year so far?

Speaker 4 (22:37):
Yeah? Him and Marlin like twins. But it's good though.

Speaker 10 (22:41):
It's like every every room, not just dB room specifically
dB room, but every room needs at least one or
two of those guys. Just expressive, confident and just not wild.
But you know, y'all know him, you know I I
I love being around both of 'em. Man, It's like
a joy to be around every single day.

Speaker 4 (23:01):
For sure.

Speaker 5 (23:03):
It's your first off. He's been working with Tvin Allen.

Speaker 10 (23:07):
Yeah, we started working in the pre draft as I
was entering the draft, and uh, you know, we had
the hip thing my my rookie year, so I wasn't
able to see him day year. But outside of that year,
we've been working ever since, so we've continued to build
our relationship and stack sessions whenever we're able to have

(23:29):
free time to work with each other. So person that
I view his family and very grateful for and continue
to work with going forward.

Speaker 4 (23:37):
Yup. Appreciate y'all.
