Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Past podcast. The date is Friday,
October third, and today, after practice, we heard from Ravens
head coach John Harbaugh, quarterback Cooper Rush, and rookie safety
Malachi Starks ahead of the Ravens Week five home matchup
with the Houston Texans. We'll start off with Coach Harbaugh's
press conference.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Okay, great to see everybody. Appreciate you guys being here.
Good day, beautiful day, good practice, good week of practice.
Guys are ready excited to play. We're going to go
in there with the guys. We have a lot of
good players that are that are prepared and are excited
to play and can't wait for the game to start.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
So what question Jeb John having practice all week as
IVY need an information this play.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Yeah, I'm just not going to comment on any of that.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Like I I know what you're saying.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
It's like now if I say, if I talk about Lamar,
then it's going to be the next guy in the
next guy, And it's just kind of all injury report related.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Cooper's had a great week of practice.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
I don't think Tyler had an incompletion today, you know,
I mean, he was really good today, had a great
day today, And so if it's those two guys, then
they'll be ready to roll. Our offense will be ready
to go. But just all the talk, you know, the
injury stuff. It's not that I don't want to put
it out there, it's just it's too many guys even
to talk about, you know, so we just be talking
about every single guy, and it's just better just to

(01:25):
leave it with uh, you know, we'll see when we
get there, because some guys, some guys aren't going to
get there. There'll be an injury report here pretty soon.
We'll show you who's out. There'll be other guys that
will have a chance and they'll be probably questionable, you know,
and uh so we'll just.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Have to have to really see as we go.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
We have an idea on certain guys, we we do,
but I don't just don't want to dive into all
that right now.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
It's just too much of it.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
What bring you do you have to go that route?

Speaker 5 (01:53):
Just and obviously different skill a little bit of different
skill set to be more Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
I mean I think you're right.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Brings a different and skill set, you know, every every
player does, every quarterback definitely does as well, and.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
That's good. I mean, everybody's unique. You know, you can
only be you.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Know you, you know, And I've told this story before,
but like I used to talk to my daughter about
that all the time, there's only one there's only one
player that can play like you play your way, and
and you're the best at it. You're the best of
playing the way you play with your skill set. And
I feel that way about all our players. I tell
our guys that all the time, you go out there
and be who you are, play your strengths. You know,

(02:29):
We'll try to do everything we can to build what
we have around your strengths as a player. And that's
probably more true for the quarterback position than any any
other position. So that's what that's what we'll try to do.

Speaker 6 (02:40):
YEA that specifically mentioned that, you know, you have a
couple of guys that are normally the guys that relay
the signals on defense, that are maybe banged up in
a lot. Always how big is communication when you have
so many new guys expected to play in the game.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Very important.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
I think communication is always so important, as you know,
and it's always challenging. It's always challenging for a defense
at home home because you know, the home crowd is loud,
you know, to disrupt the offense, which we want. So
communication is going to be important. The fact that it's
going to be someone in the green dot potentially that well,
it's not gonna be Row, you know, So it's gonna
be somebody that hasn't done it.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
Kyle's done it.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
He does a great job with it. For some reason,
it's not Kyle, then it's gonna have to be somebody else,
you know, and it'll be new for that person really so,
but I'm confident, like we practice it.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
We practice it all week. You know, those guys are
pros and.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
They know the defense inside now, you know, and let's
go play ball.

Speaker 4 (03:32):
Be comfortable with a rookie doing that.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Sure.

Speaker 5 (03:35):
Yeah, with everything else going on, we didn't get to
ask you what you thought of Isaiah likely in his
return last Sunday and moving forward, how nice will it
be to you know, increase his involvement in the h
Thank you.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
For that, Luke. That's nice. That's good.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
It's like, you know, there's a lot of you do
get you kind of get buried by the avalanche of
all the things that could go wrong, you know, and
I know that's how it works. You know, it's that's
every every city, and even as a coach, you look
at all the things that you got to overcome, you know.
I thought that, you know, Todd spoke so well yesterday
about that in terms of you work like heck to
fix it, fix it, fix it, fix it, fix it.

(04:10):
But you also work like heck to build on all
the positives you know, and and and try to try
to make those just multiply, you know. And uh and
Isaiah was one of those. And he looked great out
there at a great week of practice. It was good
to see him back. It was h that's a that's
a big ad for us.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Like the vibe of the team has been this week?
Has it felt the same?

Speaker 7 (04:30):
Does it?

Speaker 8 (04:30):
Do they? Does it seem any different than.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
I think it's different every week.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
I mean it's a good question. You know, it's never
exactly the same. I think the general the general principle,
I mean, vibe is an interesting way to say it,
and and it's it's it's true, but generally speaking, these
guys are really professional guys. I mean, the general vibe is, hey,
let's go to work, you know, let's work together.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Let's be the best we can be.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
And they work so hard at it with you know,
like we say, intentionality, and they're and they're and they're
they're determined to have the best practice and the best
game that they can and have, you know, and obviously
that's challenging because.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
This is a tough league. Man, this is competitive. You know.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Anybody that thinks it's easy, you know that things you
just look at the tape or something, even even the
guys that you know do it for a living or
who played in the NFL or coach in the NFL,
you know, and you know it's.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
You see what you see, and it's all right.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
But it's not easy, you know, because you're going to
getst really smart people and really good players, and it's
really highly competitive.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
And you guys, know you watch the games, how how
how how physical.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
And how tough it is and how fast it is
and and all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
That's why it's such an appealing game, you know.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
So our guys understand that and they want to they
want to work hard and be their best, and we
keep chasing that, you know, and hopefully, we hopefully, and
I believe I'm certain that we will get good results,
but we got to keep keep fighting for those things.
So that's the vibe, and I would say it's been
really good and really positive and really determined those lines.

Speaker 9 (05:52):
I mean, you deal with the setback this week without
getting in those specifics.

Speaker 5 (05:57):
Who gets injured during the practice and not again situation, Well.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
It was from the game. It was something that happened
during the game. I got carried over a little bit. Yeah, yeah,
so it's yeah, that's to be clear about that.

Speaker 4 (06:07):
Yeah, looking at what Cooper did in Dallas, it seems
like he gets rid of the ball pretty quickly, but
he's also pretty aggressive. I mean, what do you kind
of like about a guy who can can do both things.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Yeah, I mean I think that's right.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
I mean, that's that that's kind of to your point
if you want to dig in about Cooper per se.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
You know, his his uh you know way he plays
like the Cooper game.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
You know, it's, uh, that's what he does, you know,
and I think he's really good at it. So that's
he's got to play his his his style, you know,
the way he plays, you know, within the offense, and
he knows the offense.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
And we're ready to go.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
East where we see.

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Too Fashare for this defen how he candle ex versity
if he's trying to grow and set well too.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
There's there's a lot of defensive coordinators that are, you know,
facing the same thing. You know, in the NFL offensive coordinators,
head coaches, everybody, I mean everybody. That's just the nature
of it. I think Zach is just really, really, really strong.
You know, he does a great job with the guys,
with the coaches. I think he does a great job
with the fans and the media. You know, I think

(07:14):
he's really honest, you know, forthright. He doesn't try to
doesn't try to hide anything. You know, he just puts
it out there and what we need to do in
his eyes to be better and be the best we
can be. And that's say he's with the guys. So
I'm really I'm impressed by Zach every day. You know,
I'm impressed by the whole coaching staff, Monk everybody. That
doesn't mean that we're like happy with how you know

(07:34):
that when we don't do things right, but we go
to work on everything together to be the best we
can be. And I want you to know, these guys
are there, we have great players, We have great coaches,
got an amazing organization and uh and uh, we're working
really hard, you know, and and success is coming, so
you got to work at it.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
You gotta fight for it. And that's what our guys
are doing.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
If we want King go with Cooper beat and the
next guy up who could be a corporation of Highway
in there as well, well.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Cooper would be the next guy up, and then Tyler
would be the guy after that. Yeah, well set, okay, thanks.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
That was head coach John Harbaugh ahead of this weekend's
Week five matchup with the Texans. Next up, we have
veteran quarterback Cooper.

Speaker 5 (08:20):
Rush coopering to call him this week, you had obviously
a full week.

Speaker 7 (08:27):
Of preparation, they went, well, you know, it's always it's
always a lot better when you get all the reps
in practice like that to prepare yourself for a game
compared to a usual week where you're preparing all that
but you don't get those reps, so those are important.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
How did you feel leading the week went down there
for you in just old.

Speaker 7 (08:45):
Preparation, it was good. Uh, you know, felt felt Crisp
got a good plan and being out there with the
with the one group and you know, understand the receivers
and what they see and how they see it and
tight ends and things like that.

Speaker 5 (08:57):
Was fun.

Speaker 7 (08:58):
You always watch from you know, behind there and Lamar
and how they how they run it and then try
to replicate that and get a good feel for it.

Speaker 6 (09:05):
How much do you lean on experience? I mean you're
just started to think of fourteen or fifteen games in
your career. How much do you lean on that experience
when you go into a situation like this.

Speaker 7 (09:15):
Uh yeah, you definitely lean on it. It's you know,
we've been here before in this type of situation. It's
nothing new, and uh so you lean on that. You
get confidence from it and just trust yourself and if
you gotta go out there, you can do it.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
Goober.

Speaker 4 (09:29):
A lot of talk about how does this kind of
a must win game in Baltimore? I guess with your
experience playing quarterback for one of the biggest franchises in
the world like that, does does anything feel like pressurize
for a for you?

Speaker 7 (09:42):
They all feel like must wins? I mean, it doesn't
feel any like I said, It's kind of been here before.
You know, whenever a franchise QP goes down it's always. Uh,
sky is falling feeling everywhere you are and it's normal.
And you know, if you have to go out there
on Sunday and do what you gotta do, and it's
nice knowing you have a whole week to prep for it. Uh,
So things like that are good.

Speaker 5 (10:02):
What's your message to the guys this week? I mean,
Lamar is a leader, he's a starter. But you know,
if you're the guy, what's your messages? Don't leader out
there on the field.

Speaker 7 (10:11):
Yeah, just go be yourself. You're here for a reason.
You're in this league for a reason. There's no there's
no mistakes in this in this league about guys that
are out there. And so you trust yourself, your mind, yourself,
your football players is what you do and uh you
have a blast doing it.

Speaker 5 (10:27):
Have you got any opportunity to speak with Lamar and
out this team or preparent?

Speaker 7 (10:32):
Yeah, he's been around, you know, so we've just been
kind of normal week of preparation. I know he's doing
everything to get right and yeah, but he's been around
and you know, questions here and there about you know,
how does they run this? How does you know?

Speaker 3 (10:42):
Things like that. He's been helpful.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
Or you buy this supporting cast that you have on offense.

Speaker 7 (10:48):
Yeah, it's like I've said before, really versatile, really deep
in every room with guys that can do different things,
you know, throughout the position groups. So it's a lot
of fun. You turn around, you got the back we do,
the tight ends, we do. We can do a lot
with the receivers, hand it to them, throw it to them.
So it's it's fun. Then upfront, those guys are experience,
play a lot of ball together and we'll rely on.

Speaker 5 (11:09):
Them like this, do you is there a certain excitement
for you to ad you get a chance to possibly
go out there and show what you can do out there.

Speaker 7 (11:19):
Yeah, that's always excited. It's while you do it. This
is what you work for, you prepare for, and like
I said, get in the whole week to actually go
out and practice it too. It's a it's a lot
better than just coming in with no practice reps in
the middle of a game. So it's uh so I've
enjoyed that.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (11:35):
Thanks guys.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
That was QB. Cooper Rush on the Ravens Press Pass podcast.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Last up, today, we have rookie safety Malachi Starts.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
Okay, if you had nowhere in the dream that held
the communication of its all, do you feel comfortable doing.

Speaker 4 (12:19):
That really on calls?

Speaker 5 (12:20):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (12:20):
I think, Uh, the biggest thing is just like communication,
you know, and that's something that we've practiced throughout the week.

Speaker 7 (12:25):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (12:26):
But you know, I think whoever is gonna end up
wearing it, they're gonna do a great job because that's
something that you know, like we've practiced and we are wrong,
But no, I think you know, whoever's gonna go to
it's gonna be great.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
How different is it out there without Kyle Hamilton and
what would be like on Sunday became?

Speaker 8 (12:40):
Yeah, I think I mean it's different. You know, you
spend all that time with somebody, but you know, I
was here, uh, you know, Tvas and stuff with you know,
Rude and News and everybody, KeAndre and everybody that's gonna
could be back there. So I think the biggest thing
is just building that relationship. I think that's why connection
is such a big park, you know, cause you never
know who you're gonna be out there. It was so

(13:01):
just really being comfortable with who I'm out there with
and just really fun around having fun, And I think
that's what we're gonna do.

Speaker 4 (13:07):
How do you think things are going to far for you?

Speaker 7 (13:09):
I'm sure a guy who's made to many places over
his career, you it's your but you also don't wanna
try to do too much?

Speaker 9 (13:14):
Yeah that position? How how do you kind of balance that?

Speaker 1 (13:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (13:16):
I think the biggest thing is just knowing your job
and knowing your role. You know, like when the play
comes to you, it is your job to make it.
You know, when it comes, it comes, and it doesn't
it doesn't.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (13:25):
I think that's the that's the really good thing about
being on this defense, and like you're playing with a
a group of guys who can do their job or
any at anything. Getting a point so it just really
not trying to overstep, you know, stay on my landing
and do do my job and and help other job
as well. The other kind of you.

Speaker 1 (13:40):
How did you feel different guys to step up the leadership?

Speaker 8 (13:44):
Oh A cool, Yeah, I think uh, A lot of
guys are just you know, stepping into their role that
they have and kind of taking ownership, you know, whether
that be a leadership role of where it's vocal, whether
if it's you know, effort, whether if it's you know,
how you show up in the meeting, you run it practice.
A lot of guys are taking ownership of their role
and just kind of you know, running with it.

Speaker 7 (14:06):
Thank you about.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
That was rookie Malachi Starks talking about the Ravens Week
five meeting with the Houston Texans. That's it for today.
