Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Pass Podcast. It's Sunday, August tenth,
and the Ravens just got off the field from another
padded training camp practice. Today. We had a chance to
hear from a few wide receivers, but first up, head
coach John Harball.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Okay, good to see everybody appreciate it. Good work day today, guys,
A tough day. Good good work practice. This important week
for us to try to improve and get better. I
thought the guys were very intentional about trying to do
their best and get better today. So we'll be on
to tomorrow. We'll be in shells and then work from there.
We'll question Joe.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
John I think we mean, tell a little bit about
it yesterday. I mean, is this gonna be in your
mind like the last kind of whole camp mode week
and then next week goes out of it or how
do you have.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
That kind of fare well?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah, I mean you're never really out of it until
after the last preseason game. So it's a little bit
different schedule next week, but still I would still consider
it camp.

Speaker 5 (00:59):
Yeah, bullet get in there right away.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
The other night.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, he's I would say, dramatic improvement, just works hard,
so hard all the time, and it's shown up and
how he's playing playing center and guard, both guard and
center positions and has just done well. I see him
blocking people. You know, that's usually a pretty good I
don't know, is that is that what lyman do?

Speaker 4 (01:22):
Right? They block? And so he's making a lot of blocks.

Speaker 5 (01:25):
John had to go on, I R did that just
end up being worse than you guys initially thought or
what happened?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Uh, it's a long story, you know what I mean.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
It's just a long story, and.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
You can I really, I really couldn't even explain it
to you, much as I might want to, I couldn't
explain it to you. So just it is what it is.
You haven't heard that from me ever, have you? Until now?
That was a Brian Billick one. I like Brian Brian.
That was for Brian Brian.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
It is what it is. Okay, we didn't Yeah, he's okay.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Jay, Here's okay, Kyle's okay, Deandre's okay, all those guys,
Keaton's okay.

Speaker 5 (02:06):
Dere Uh you know now he's had a few winks
in camp. Oh what did you kind of? I mean,
it's one thing, like you said, when you play against him. Uh,
now you have a guy that's here. What if you
look about dere horn.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
Hamm Well, I mean it's just the skill set that
gosh you always saw you know, you played against he
Uh he towards Jersey, someone towards Jersey trying to defend
him yesterday and he still made to play anyway. I
accused him of cutting the stitches ahead of time to
try to get calls.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
But I accused him that when he's playing for Tennessee
and for Houston.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
So but no, he's uh, he's he's the same, you know,
guy does the same things really really well.

Speaker 5 (02:41):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
You know, Nate was asking about covering him yesterday on
that one a dead low red sideline playing.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
What could I have done?

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Is really lastly, Nate, there's nothing you could have done better,
you know, just that was a great thrown and great
catch by probably arguably one of the best who's ever
done it. I mean he guys like an Kwan, guys
like Mason did those kind of plays right there that
we've had here.

Speaker 5 (03:03):
Cunningham take a snap or two down in the red zone.
There was that just kind of thrown in there.

Speaker 6 (03:08):
Is that something different with his usage.

Speaker 4 (03:11):
That's great that you noticed that.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
No, what that was was a situational drill, that that
we're throwing an interception because it was a get down
victory for the defense, so that we practiced those situations.
So if you get an interception up by one score
late in the game, you can run the clock out.
You run and you get down, you know, don't turn
it over. So none of our quarterbacks like to throw interceptions.
I gonna make Devion do it.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
But then I you know I did. I said, nah, Milik,
you go do it.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
So Milike says there's a touchdown pass the very first time,
just to make his point, and then then he threw
the reception.

Speaker 7 (03:42):
So we know you guys have been a little banged
up there running back, He added Miles gaskin.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
What do you like about him?

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah, very effective back in the past and uh different places,
play special teams, very uh, very into it, very uh.
I just thought he was really like on point and
excited to be here and had had a good day
to day and especially teams. And at the end as
a running back, you got in there and did well,
seem like new was doing. I think you'll be help
us here and see what happens.

Speaker 8 (04:09):
You have talked about it, the players talking about your
decision to have everything graded and the leaderboards.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
And position leader positions, leader boards and position rooms.

Speaker 8 (04:18):
You're talking about like how that kind of it came
you in any previously good grade place.

Speaker 9 (04:22):
But what was the idea of the kind of to
get transparent have it like this.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Well, probably the best way to describe is just to
take it to another level. I mean, we've always been
very intentional about all those types of things that are important,
and you great a lot of different areas. I mean,
you great everything to some degree, you certainly evaluate everything.
But we just thought if we always kind of believe
that if it's if it's important and it matters, and
especially if it's a type of thing that's kind of

(04:46):
the dirty work, sort of the blue collar work that
takes kind of an everyday intentionality, then you know, you
should not just talk about it, but you should reward it,
you know, and and emphasize it and grade it and
evaluate it and all those kind of things. So guys are
thinking about it, and that's really what we tried to do.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
That's what we're trying to.

Speaker 5 (05:05):
Do from just a rsparency that requires.

Speaker 4 (05:08):
I think it's really great.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
I don't know if there's any surprises that probably kind
of hit it's it's great that the guys are so
into it. I love the fact that it matters to
him so much. And I just think that they understand,
you know, when you when you when you go through
the things that we've gone through in terms of different
games and things like that, they can see when we
do those things well. You know, sometimes most of the
time the game is not even close, you know, and
we don't do those things well, and we haven't been

(05:30):
blown out, but but we've given teams a chance to
beat us.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
So that's where we.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Want to be intentional and just be at our best
and all the little things that matter as much as
we possibly can. You know, I'd like to be the
best in the league at turnover margin, like to be
the best in the league at at at fewest penalties,
you know, like to be the best in the league
at running to the ball or or or tackling or
blocking or whatever it might, because those are the things
that you are impactful to the game.

Speaker 6 (05:59):
As Isaac and of course with Vinson, have a lot
of good matchups, a lot of very spative PASSWA reps today.
What are you seeing out of both of those players,
and specifically Vincent, how do you feel like he's done
coming into the league.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Yeah, well, I think he's a developmental player who's done
well and h you know, he's he's his step up.

Speaker 4 (06:15):
It's a step up for sure.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
It is for everybody, but especially you know, coming from
a little bit of a smaller school competition. They played Auburn,
you know, they hated those moments. But he's going against
the best of the best every single day and and
that's You're right.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
It's been very intense.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
I mean, the the edge guys and and all that
in the D line, with the with the offensive line,
it's been really intense every day.

Speaker 4 (06:34):
Was it was intense out here again today.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
And I think he gets better every day, you know,
and he still has a ways to go. So but
he's got tools, and he's got determination and he's smart.
So he's uh. I would expect him to become a
really good player. Okay, great, thanks, Okay.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Next up, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins talking about a jersey.

Speaker 8 (07:00):
Name a little loose or something on the uh on
at tackle the other day.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
Uh, you got Ersie Broke away from it is? What
what was? What was the situation there?

Speaker 10 (07:09):
Uh?

Speaker 7 (07:10):
That's just how how they make make the shirts here?
Uh you know playing football. Uh but yeah, it was
just you know, nothing crazy, nothing unusual.

Speaker 5 (07:20):
How do you feel that chemistry?

Speaker 11 (07:22):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (07:22):
Like between you and Lamar obvious leaping the first time
playing together and you how do you think now, what
was it almost three weeks in the camp?

Speaker 5 (07:29):
Now, how do you feel that's progression?

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Uh?

Speaker 7 (07:31):
I think it's progressed. Well, you know, uh you know
where where we're building the chemistry on and off the field, Uh,
in the locker room talking about things. So uh I
think it's going.

Speaker 5 (07:40):
Well. Is there a uh potensive back then? You found
you particularly like one again in New US? Uh?

Speaker 7 (07:47):
Yeah, I I like going against all of 'em. I
would say, specifically Nate Wiggins.

Speaker 9 (07:50):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (07:51):
You know, I think Nate is uh you know, he's
he's a young guy who who loves competing. Uh you know,
he wants to be great.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (07:58):
You know I will see jaiyir uh John here and
I h I played against each other before, but I've
never played against Nate. Uh you know chig Uh you
know I played against him, Uh and well I played
with him in Tennessee. So I would say, you know
Nate just because you know him and I I've never
really got reps age against each other. And uh, you
know he's a young corner who wants to be great.

Speaker 5 (08:18):
When you see him, do you feel like he has
all the tools that you need to be top level PEPs? Oh?

Speaker 7 (08:24):
Yeah, of course. Uh he's a Clemson guy. So you know, uh,
you know, we we trained him well around there.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
Man.

Speaker 7 (08:30):
Uh but nah, Nate, Nate, Uh you know he competes
every day. Uh he does his complain, comes out and work.
Uh you know he has every every every tool said
that you uh y you you look for in uh
uh lockdown corner?

Speaker 5 (08:41):
So have you give give me up enough passes to
keep everyone happy? Face?

Speaker 7 (08:47):
You know, I think this room is is full of
uh unselfish receivers and I think, you know, last year
was a testimony to that. You know, those guys uh
winning games and uh you know, just you know, balling out.
I think, uh, you know, both the both of the
receivers had good years last year. Uh you know, so

(09:07):
you know coming into it, I I feel like it
was uh you know a good group already from what
I heard about him and then come here. You know,
they just wanna win, you know, and play him self
as ball he's younger.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
Exact Moore saying that Nate Williams were he would have
gone on to recruiting, visited Clemson, and you were.

Speaker 5 (09:23):
Your name would already been on the on the board.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Has has Nate Wings ever.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
Mentioned that to you?

Speaker 7 (09:28):
Nah, he hasn't. But uh, my uncle is a strength
training coach at Clemson, so I remember him always talking
about Nate, uh when he was there, you know, just
about a young kid that's just gonna be great, and
uh you know I would go there and hang out
my uncle in the strength training room and uh Nate
would be in there a lot of times, uh you know,
just kind of doing his own thing, and he'd be like,
you know this this uh you know, this kid right

(09:48):
here is gonna be great, and uh you know obviously
I you know, he was talking about Nate, and uh
you know, I feel like he's he's still continuing to
uh find himself uh in this league. But yeah, uh
you know, I definitely I knew him, uh when he
was at c through my uncle.

Speaker 9 (10:01):
I know.

Speaker 10 (10:01):
You spend the way to coaches and older quarterbacks for feedback.

Speaker 6 (10:05):
Do you in talpital?

Speaker 4 (10:06):
Is there anything that you can teaching? Yeah, we talk.

Speaker 7 (10:08):
We talk a lot, uh you know just about certain
routes they they you know, he feels like he needs
work on. Uh when we do one on one drills
out you know kind of uh you know, run some
of those against him. Uh, just you know, so he
you know, can kind of get reps that that he
needs at certain uh you know, at certain certain debts
or you know, against certain kind of coverages. So, uh, yeah,

(10:29):
we talk a lot.

Speaker 5 (10:30):
You under John.

Speaker 8 (10:31):
Harpbell said yes, really playing to talk to some of
the veterans about whether to play in the preseason or
who's gonna play. Being that you're on a new team,
do you have any preferences about whether you play in
the preseason?

Speaker 5 (10:43):
Would you prefer or not? Just being reck getting ride.

Speaker 7 (10:45):
For me going, Uh, you know, I have no preference.
I haven't played in preseason in a while, but you know, uh,
you know, football is football, so I have no preference.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Yeah, Okay, what was some what's kind of been your
impression of over Sean Baby from.

Speaker 7 (10:58):
A receiving standpoint, Uh, you know, but uh, the way
he competes you know, he he's hard on himself, which
is good, which is what you look for in a
young wid receiver. Uh you know who's who's still making
a name for himself in this league. Uh you know,
but but he comes out and work it Yuh you know,
he competes. He loves going against you know, our our

(11:19):
best corners, and uh he looks forward to those matchups.
Uh you know, but you know that's what stood out
against Uh. You know I would say the most about him,
just how he likes to compete, uh against our best corners.

Speaker 5 (11:30):
On you Uh you know you've been with uh derck
enery m uh Tennessee now here.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
Uh, where do you think when his career is all
said and done, people talk about you being open.

Speaker 5 (11:41):
W when do you think Derek stid career is gonna say? No?
What do you think will rank among your old time greats?

Speaker 7 (11:47):
You know, I think you know, his his record, His
track record speaks for hisself. Uh you know what he's
done in Tennessee and what he's done here, Uh, what
he's gonna continue to do here. So you know, I
think Derek is obviously on track, but uh you know
who him and you know I think we we're definitely
president and and what we're doing and not looking forward,
uh you know, and that's that's trying to when when uh,

(12:08):
you know, games for for the Ravens right now. But uh,
you know, I think everyone knows, uh you know, potentially
you know where he could be and I feel like
he does as well.

Speaker 5 (12:16):
What's your question?

Speaker 9 (12:18):
I was just gonna ask you, Lamar, find you a
couple of times on back shoulder throws, what is the
kind of a this the secret to to that success
from throwing a guy open like yourself and maybe it
look might.

Speaker 5 (12:31):
Look like in the court of quarterback effective.

Speaker 7 (12:33):
Uh just trust, you know, uh, just trust and obviously
me going out and uh showing him that he can
trust me. Uh you know what that comes obviously with
with reps and and doing it over and over and so,
uh you know, really just trust because you know, sometimes
you don't look like you're open, uh, but you know
it's on the receiver to kind of make you right appreciate.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
And finally wide receiver dats.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
In practice today, there was a point where, you know,
the more growing out he sees you and he's like
going through yeah, and you you move and connecting it.
I mean, can you describe kind of that comfort level
now that you have with the more where a play
like that can develop.

Speaker 11 (13:14):
I would definitely say, you know, being on the practice
field with him and playing on the game and him
and being able to you know, spend time with him
on the field. That's that's part of you know, playing
with Lamar Jackson and you gotta be on the field
to learn this. So definitely have gotten used to it,
so hopefully you know, keeping growing there.

Speaker 5 (13:31):
Yeah, what'sually been the most pleased with for yourself.

Speaker 11 (13:36):
In campcla Uh, I just drive myself on staying healthy
and staying consistent with that. You know, I feel like
as long as as long as I'm on the field,
I can make plays. So you know I've shown that
and I've proven that, so you know, I'm just trying
to do what I can for my body, you know,
be there for the team.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
Oh I wish I I I I know you obviously
be dealt with an injury that rookie year.

Speaker 9 (13:53):
You guys now it's you know, two of those rookdvs
for for the years having been there, having gone through
the high and the others.

Speaker 5 (14:00):
What is your kind of message for guys who were
coming to the NFL and having it interrupted prayer earlier.

Speaker 11 (14:05):
I was just say, man, you gotta it's gonna be
some dark days, you know, going through rehab, but you know,
just keep pushing and keep fighting. That's the only thing
that held me.

Speaker 7 (14:13):
Uh.

Speaker 11 (14:13):
I didn't know if I was gonna have on another
contract or have a another day, because when those things
start happening in your career, you know, opportunities start to swindle,
so you just never know how you gonna end up,
but you know, just always having the mindset of keep.

Speaker 5 (14:25):
Going shot a How different is the Daniel Foley like
that you we see.

Speaker 4 (14:30):
Now than the guy that you with it so from Minnesota.

Speaker 11 (14:34):
Yeah, well when I was in Minnesota, he was like
f over four hundred pounds, so it's a big difference.
And he was my roommates, so all the food was
gone a lot. So I mean it it's been quite
a difference to see him, you know, come to the NFL,
going through where he's been through, you know, being from
Australia and all of that is it's cool to see him.
I was kind of crazy that we got drafted the
same team, but uh, he's worked extremely hard to get

(14:56):
where he's at So I'm definitely proud of him.

Speaker 5 (14:58):
Is that unusual to have a store wide receiver? Ruby
was a four hundred dollar doctor.

Speaker 11 (15:04):
Uh in my situation, Yeah, that that was I don't
I don't know nobody else who was doing it at
that time. So it just ended up working out, came
in together and bunded and yeuh, I ended up with
some big guys in my room for sure.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 11 (15:16):
Yeah, get a guy that any passion tips or it's
not much you can do there, It's not, it's not
there's not too much you can do there.

Speaker 5 (15:24):
Yeah, you're sure.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
You talk highly about test Walker in the past, and
he's had a strong camp, Like it's where are some
of the biggest steps.

Speaker 5 (15:32):
That you've seen him take?

Speaker 7 (15:33):
The stamp?

Speaker 11 (15:33):
Definitely his confidence. You know, come in as a rookie,
you know you second you second guessing a lot. You know,
you wanna please the coaches, you wanna please yourself. So
it's a lot of things that's going on in your mind.
But I would definitely say the game has slowed down
for Tis. He's playing at a you know, high level,
as you all can see. Uh, he's stacking days on
top of each other. You know, he put in a
lot of work and he's committed to the game, so
hopefully we'll see a lot more with him making plays

(15:55):
this year as well.

Speaker 5 (15:56):
You're sawing though more said, Uh, that's great to get
the store the camp, yuah. Even though he has c oneby,
he's to folk growth to his game. He's twenty years older.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
Is there anything that in this camp or even this is,
you know, this summer that you've seen him improve upon
anything like that?

Speaker 5 (16:15):
Yes, and no.

Speaker 11 (16:16):
It's like yeah, but it's a it's a much deeper conversation.
But the dudes are not in not overall for a reason,
so it's kind of hard for me to pinpoint what
he does wrong. That's why I don't get paid to
do that. Th that's a marking job. But uh, lamar.
You know he's very, you know, more vocal than he's
ever have been about what he wants from us, even
to the staff. Uh, to the old lineman. You know,

(16:36):
he's definitely pushing the agenda of you know, just staying
hungry and know, being competitive. He's a you know, definitely
a competitive guy, and he's leaning us in the right
direction with that.

Speaker 5 (16:44):
Right what's out and you get a lot of praise
to your route running. What was the key?

Speaker 1 (16:48):
I get?

Speaker 5 (16:49):
Every receiver wants to be a good route runner, So
how did you go about taking your games another level?
With that level?

Speaker 11 (16:55):
What I be asking the game, going out on the
feeling practicing it for one, but also just watch and
you know a lot of a lot of film. Uh
I watch a lot of Jerry Rice, I watch a
lot of other guys in the league, you know, even
Jay Flowers himself. But you gotta be a studentother game,
and and you know, I'm blessed to be a student
other game. I love it and I'm always trying to
find different ways, different ways to tip off you know,

(17:15):
the dbs to make a thing. We're going left and
go right. So I mean some guys don't don't have
it and some guys do have it. And you know,
uh me and Zay are definitely two receivers that I
think you know definitely have you know what it takes
to to be at the elite level in a rock running.

Speaker 5 (17:30):
Oh, you Ji highlights on on YouTube ars or.

Speaker 11 (17:33):
Like if you go to YouTube, it's a highlight tape
with him, but it's like very very old. You gotta
look you gotta look very closely for sure, but uh,
you can see you know that he was ahead of
his time when he was playing. He run routes how
a lot of us do today, and there wasn't a
lot of guys you know, doing that back then, So
he was definitely the og and rock running for for me,
for sure?

Speaker 5 (17:52):
What did what did you learn from them? Was it
like bookwork? Was it how work dvs?

Speaker 1 (17:57):
What?

Speaker 4 (17:58):
What kind of sit down?

Speaker 11 (17:59):
I would just say consistent l consistency. He's consistent on
a lot, and I think as a receiver, you gotta
be you know, consistent in how you move and with
your feet, you know what I'm saying, and with your
your body language and your speed and tempos of how
you do stuff. And uh, the bunte Adams is also
being a god that I studied, and he's very you know,
good at switching up his tempos and doing different things
like that. So it's a lot of different guys you

(18:19):
know that I that I pour from for sure.

Speaker 6 (18:21):
Do you approach your uh upcoming matchups similarly where you're
studying the quarterbacks that you're gonna match up on, figure
out the particular ways that you can beat.

Speaker 11 (18:28):
Done with UH, kind of so not really my f
I I feel like I study more so the defense
as a whole. I truly feel this. If a receiver
feel it's kind of his fault that sometimes you know,
you can get a passing aperience or whatnot, But I
truly think it's r If a receiver do it he
need to do wherever you've play, then he should win.

Speaker 10 (18:45):
Try to ask DeAndre, is this do you have a
preference at the stage of your career about playing in
the preseason something you you're glad you haven't done, or
you want to or and then if if you ever
voice your preference.

Speaker 11 (18:57):
I mean I I honestly don't. I don't really care.
I just listened to what hardest tales tales?

Speaker 5 (19:02):
If you do.

Speaker 11 (19:03):
I love playing football. You know I learned to, you know,
not take it for granted. So you know, every day
feels like a game for me with this practice, you know,
preseason or regular season. You know, I've learned to just
shoot it all the same. You know, I don't know
when I'll be playing, but hopefully soon.

Speaker 6 (19:16):
Hey, you you talked.

Speaker 5 (19:17):
Earlier about the importance of staying healthy. I mean you've
got now m multiple wealth the off seasons in a
row you hadn't. I mean, do you have a deeper
appreciation for that now whereas maybe that was something.

Speaker 4 (19:27):
That you took for granted five years ago, for per
for you know, the value.

Speaker 5 (19:31):
Of stringing together multiple healthy off.

Speaker 11 (19:33):
Seasons as a as a football player, it's always a concern.
I don't know if nobody ever, you know, take it
for granted. It's just something that can wake you up.

Speaker 9 (19:42):
Uh.

Speaker 11 (19:43):
I feel like it definitely, you know, open up another
side that you know. Uh I wasn't ever aware to
uh for sure. Uh I never been hurt before, So
I'm just learning to cherish every moment, not even about injuries,
but you know, just a game of football for sure. Yeah,
