Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to the Ravens Press Pass Podcast. The Ravens are
getting ready to play another division rival, going on the
road this week to face off.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
As they prepare for that game, today we heard from
head coach John Harbone.
Speaker 3 (00:16):
First of all, I just want to start off by
by offering condolences to the family of the Poplic family
for the passing of Woodie Poppick, our longtime stadium announcer DJ,
who did a great job for all those year at
our stadium is live and full of energy thanks to
thanks to Woody and people like Woody, and we just
(00:37):
really appreciate We appreciate him, we appreciate his family, and
we offer our heartfelt condolences for their loss.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
What questions you have?
Speaker 5 (00:50):
I mean, you brought pretty much the same cast of
guys back from last year, just not having the same
consistency when offenses last year. How do you try to
get that that assistancy back.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
To the Just keep chasing it, keep chasing it every
day and practice and meetings and and try to try
to find it during the game on Sunday.
Speaker 6 (01:10):
Kind of bringing it up.
Speaker 7 (01:11):
Lake and Thomson's thought behind that and kind of your
first impressions, and it is their path for him to
get out lated active him.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah, we'll have to see where it goes. I'm just
kind of getting to know him. He had he played
obviously a great career, uh a long time. Uh, you know,
very physical, tough, you know, hard nosed players. Had a
chance to speak him this morning, what a great conversation. Great, great,
great man, family man, and had played some football this year.
You know, I played quite a bit. So Uh, we'll
see how quickly it gets up to speed and kind
(01:40):
of how it falls in with what we're doing.
Speaker 4 (01:44):
Everyone Monday, because the rest day today for.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Him and our rest day, right yep, John going.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
Against Jamar Chase.
Speaker 5 (01:55):
Uh, you know what's what's the key to to slowing
him down? Because I mean a lot of them at
heems to struggle with that.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah, he's he's pretty good, pretty good. You heard about him.
I've heard about him. He's not bad. Uh, and not
just not just Jamar. I mean they've got heck of
an offense. I think he'd look at you know, what
they've done. But they've really done all year, but spot
obviously especially when when Joe burrows out there. Uh, they
had another big game this last week and Buffalo, Uh, Cincinnati,
(02:24):
Buffalo was a shootout. So, Uh, they do a lot
of good things. I mean they're there, he's accurate, he
moves around in the pocket, he finds jamar.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
They've got plenty of other talented guys on offense that
they that they find with their passing game, they run
the ball downhill. Uh, it's gonna be a big challenge.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
I know we asked about Emory Jones on Monday, but
is the plan still to try to sprinkle him out
there in the rotation form that it was before, you.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Mean two weeks ago. No, it's not the same plan
as that right now.
Speaker 7 (02:54):
No, you guys putting in Carltons. Just what Carl Jones,
what you've kind of seen from him in the role
he can fill.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Yeah, Carl, that was a pickup. I was was really
good and timely for us. You know, we've kind of
been through two linebackers now special teams, and then Carl
becomes available. A guy we played against a few weeks ago.
He's he's a young, very effective special teams linebacker in
this league. And UH had a chance to get him
out there today and practice and he look good, picked
(03:27):
up our stuff really well, and expect him to be
out there playing really well for us on Sunday.
Speaker 8 (03:34):
Do you think are various for this week?
Speaker 4 (03:37):
I do?
Speaker 3 (03:38):
I do. Yeah, they practice today, practice well, so we'll
be uh, we'll be uh. We'll see what happens. Gentlemen, Hey,
what's up? Young defensive backs? A lot of spirit.
Speaker 9 (03:56):
I know you you've worked out here and I know
you're you know, kind of involved in the t facility
stuff side of things. Have you used the mortal chamber
that they have said at the expensive piece of machinery
if they have the normal team, you know.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
That is what is it?
Speaker 7 (04:13):
It's a red light that happens.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Really, I need to find that where?
Speaker 4 (04:20):
Where? When? Which spot is it?
Speaker 3 (04:22):
I mean I see something in the massage. No one's
made me aware of that yet. That's the little disappointing.
I've been hiding it back. There is that something that
you partaken?
Speaker 4 (04:36):
I did go to one in Virginia to try it out.
I can't afford it, not for a visit. Is it?
That's good saying?
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Okay, guarded your basement?
Speaker 4 (04:49):
You know what the heck?
Speaker 8 (04:51):
Anything else?
Speaker 4 (04:52):
The immortal.
Speaker 6 (04:56):
This is the time of year where there's playoff ratifications,
flash and game and scenarios. You've talked a lot about
keeping the team in the presence. How important is that
quality right now given all everything that's kind of swirling
about the ratifications and stuff.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
It's critically important. I mean, we ramifications mean nothing. I
mean to say we control our own destiny. It's only
if we win. We have to win to control your destiny.
Uh So that's what we have to do. And it's
it's been that way the last two weeks and we
hadn't been able to pull off a winning was that
way the previous four weeks and we were able to
do it, So you know, we need to go win.
That's it. We need to win. If you win, then
(05:33):
you have a chance to control your destiny. If you don't,
it's going to be out of your hands. That's simple
as that.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
We also heard from safety Kyle Hamilton.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Oh dude, game.
Speaker 10 (05:58):
Obviously bummed they didn't make the playoff, but I think
it might have been the maybe the right decision, the
political decision at the end of the day, you know,
had to have had to have. Wins have to matter.
So sucks they didn't get in, but it's kind of
funny they're not going to bowl game. I guess all
the important balls are taken for the playoffs, but them
still be there.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
I don't think you go against Jamar Chase unless they
things could change, probably, But when you're on a defense
trying to contain a guy like Jamar Chase, I mean,
what's kind of the key the priority to try to
still lash down?
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Yeah, I mean we do match up sometimes on the slot.
Speaker 10 (06:33):
You know, they move him around so much, and that's
part of the reason why they have success. You know,
you never know where he's gonna be at, and you know,
you try to scheme your offense, scheme your defense up
whatever may be, so your best players can shine. And
that's what they do very well, not even him, just
all the weapons they have on offense. I think big
part of stopping him is just knowing where he is
and what they like to do in certain areas where
(06:55):
he's at. Obviously, Joe's a heck of a quarterback and
can get the ball wherever needs to be and can
make reads and not just force feeding Jamar but let
everybody else eat. But yeah, I mean it's a challenge
that people have had a problem with for the past
fiftyer in the league something like that. So he's a
good player and they're good offense. But uh, you know,
(07:15):
I think we have a scheme and I think effort
a lot of the time it makes up for mistakes,
just scheme wise. So I think we definitely have that
down pat just run to the ball, playing hard that
it covers a lot of things up.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
I guess multiple people we talk to at the beginning
of the last year, we're kind of saying, get to
put a bus shout up time, Like what we want
to do is still in front of us, but you know,
we got to do it.
Speaker 6 (07:38):
Same messages to start this week.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Is it any harder coming out of the Pittsburgh game.
Speaker 10 (07:42):
Yeah, I mean it is a little bit harder obviously.
You know, we were six and six last week. Now
we're six and seven, so I mean that urgency becomes
even much even more urgent, I guess, But you know,
it's a it's not hard, but it's a little annoying,
not from you guys, but for myself having to get
up here every week and be like we need to
turn on, we need to turn on. It's been like
that ever since week one. You know, it's time that
(08:06):
we go out and do it, and there's no excuses
that has that are to be made at this point.
But like I said, it's a it's a lot of
talk when we can stand up here and tell you
our plan every week, but it's a matter of us
going out there and actually executing it. So we feel
like we've done that multiple times this year. We just
got to replicate it down the stretch. I would say. One,
(08:30):
just playing together and playing like Russian coverage, working together.
I think that's a big part of football in general.
Complimentary football. You know, sometimes the coverage may not look great,
but then the rush gets there and then it you don't.
Like I said, playing hard covers up those mistakes or
pass rushes and getting home. But DB's are covering well,
(08:51):
quarterbacks scramble, throws it out out of bound, something like that.
I think we've been playing very complimentary with each other. Also,
I think just being resilt throughout a game. We've had
the tendency in the past to just maybe come out
strong and then second half kind of wear down and
then you know we're not doing well in the fourth
quarter when son to win games. I think last week,
(09:12):
I don't know the stats, but somebody said something about
him in the yards. Their first downs the Steelers had
in the fourth quarter obviously gave ourselves the opportunity to
win the game at the at the end of the day.
So just playing better down the stretch of games. You know,
I think our red zone has been really good, and
you know we've been putting some tough positions. We're going
out there and getting stops, holding the three point stuff
like that, and you know, we gotta we do a
(09:34):
lot of good stuff, and there's obviously some stuff we
need to fix, but you know, I think we're in
a good spot right now.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Coming off.
Speaker 10 (09:44):
H just one game out of time. Just focus on
Joe Burrow right now, Kyle.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
What's that kind of cat.
Speaker 9 (09:54):
And mouse game like before the stat But a quarterback
like Joe Burrow where you guys will show pressure, maybe
switching to protection and maybe he'll fail or stay in
and just you know, he kind of got you guys
some time, especially on third and longs in that a
week your team game.
Speaker 10 (10:08):
So just what's a like going against him in cases
like that, Yeah, there's definitely some gamesmanship going on. I
think Aaron Rodgers last week was probably the best example,
I'll ever get of it. You know, he's taking the
clock down all the way to zero and gets his
offense to what he wants to be in. And same
thing with Joe. You know, he's really a younger guy
for his position and the way the offense operates, just
(10:32):
the operation down the field and you know, taking care
of the ball for the most part and making plays.
And there's definitely like a cat and mouse gamesman ship
going on before the snap, just with disguises and bluffing
one thing. And he's got us a couple of times,
but we've also got him too, So I think it's
the beauty football. You know, every you're gonna have wins
and losses, just a matter of who stacks more wins
(10:53):
at the other.
Speaker 6 (10:54):
Game that you guys are in this position, given where
you may need to win out to make the playoffs.
Speaker 10 (11:02):
I mean, I would say, yeah if you ask me
this in training camp, not that this is expected or
anything at this at this point in the season, but
you know, you play the cards.
Speaker 4 (11:12):
You're dept.
Speaker 10 (11:13):
Really we've dealt ourselves ourselves these cards. So you know,
we're obviously not in a position we would like to
have been in, but we still have opportunity to go
win the AFC North and get into get into the playoffs.
So we still control our destiny and that's not going
to change where our mindset is, when when, and we're
in from here on out. So that's something we can
(11:36):
control and something we gotta go do.
Speaker 7 (11:39):
What you were saying about, like, you know, staying it
up here, having to say the same thing every week,
like we just kind of in this game, we're this
week's a playoff game, or whatever the case is is
it does the message change at all in this this
week coming weeks amongst you guys, or some get delivered
(11:59):
in a different way or anything like that to shake
things up.
Speaker 10 (12:03):
Uh, yeah, I think so. I think just the way
coaches were opening meetings just by talking it it's talking
from a different perspective. I feel like, you know, our
perspective changes every time we win or lose a game,
and you know, the record changes, the probability and what
it means for the rest of the games change. Probably
(12:24):
going to go off on a tangent here a little bit,
but kind of a weird relation to your question. I
was thinking just about like all the sports and all
the champions that I've seen recently and just the how
they got there and kind of put things in perspective
for me. Like the French Open, Carlos Alcarez has three
(12:45):
match points, he's down three match points, comes back, wins.
Rory McElroy loses the US Open like that last year,
misses a putt on eighteen at the Masters. Everything looks
like he's about to choke again. Wins the Masters. That
f one driver. I don't know if you guys watched that,
but maxter Staff and the middle of the year it
(13:06):
looks like he's not even gonna finish in the top
three or four for the Driver's Championship, put himself in
position last week to win the whole thing.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
Lebron down three to one in the finals, comes back
and wins it.
Speaker 10 (13:17):
It's like it never really is the Cinderella fairy tale
season that's gonna be, I mean, and that just is
what it is. I mean, the Patriots won all those
games and then lost in Super Bowl, and nobody really
cares about the undefeated record up until that point. So
it's not about how you get there. It's a matter
you getting there. I think the mindset that we have
to have is kind of like that, like all these
(13:38):
great sports feats have come with challenge, and you know,
we could be another story along that road. So that's
kind of the mindset I feel like we've taken upon
ourselves right now. It's kind of the mindset we need
to have, have to have in order to get where
we want to go. But you know it's it's gonna
be a heck of a story. That's that's what we're telling ourselves.
I kind of did that tangent a little bit at
(13:59):
lunch today so they can talk about themselves.
Speaker 11 (14:03):
Football fans know that traditions matter. They're what inspire us
to make our masa in Tostitos the traditional way, starting
with whole corn kernels, no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives,
all to give you that perfect crunch. Discover your next
tradition this football season. Head to the store, grab your
Tostitos team bag and scan the code for a chance
to score an epic experience with the Baltimore Ravens. Tostitos
Tradition matters.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
In locker room today, we heard from a handful of players,
including a tight end Mark Andrews.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
You're kind of this team that is in that scenario
now that you know, Sunday is definitely one of those
must wins.
Speaker 8 (14:37):
Yeah, it's that time of year, you know, with everything
in front of us, being able to dial in and
focus on this game is what it's all about. I know,
the energy and everything in this locker room and this
organization is is all geared towards that. And so I'm
excited to go out and do that and you know, start,
you know, start being the team that.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
We are, or you that moment you're here where you're
kind of back against the walls mentality, how does this
team respond to those situations?
Speaker 4 (15:05):
Continue to fight always?
Speaker 8 (15:06):
And that's the type of guys that we have here
as fighters and people that are resilient, humble, and uh,
you know, no matter what they go through, just continuing
to keep their head down and work. And you know,
I think that that'll pay off in the end. And uh,
I'm excited about this last you know, four games of
the year and just taking it into this game and
this this first game against the Bengals to balls kind
(15:28):
of what's been.
Speaker 10 (15:29):
A message from team leaders as you guys entered this
most churchwards the last.
Speaker 8 (15:33):
Couple of weeks, Uh, you know, just the the energy
today at practice was was going to work, you know,
working hard, doing our job, focusing on our game plan
and knowing that this is a big game coming up
and we've got to be ready to go w.
Speaker 9 (15:46):
Parker off the field.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
I know on Monday you went to the Holiday Helpers Gage.
How great is it to be out the community doing.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Event like that.
Speaker 4 (15:51):
It was really just an awesome experience.
Speaker 8 (15:53):
You know. I was telling someone, I feel like, you know,
I got more out of it than the a little
to the two kids. I was shopping with Armor and
here and they were just you know, a blast to
be with and had a great time with them, and
you know, just giving back and having fun. And that's
what this you know, time of years about Mark.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Since signs president, drink yourself.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
Anywhere like that? Pardon me, signed the extension.
Speaker 3 (16:15):
To be Barsilver Prosident, drink yourself for anyway to celebrate.
Speaker 8 (16:18):
No, no, not right now. You know. It's it's all,
you know, just focusing on on each and every week
and and especially during the season. I'm pretty diligent about,
you know, taking care of myself. So you know that
I'll have to wait till after the season, and you know,
but extremely fortunate to be in this position and be
here and couldn't ask for a better thing.
Speaker 12 (16:35):
You had to behind up must win flipp swish mindset,
going back to one and five before the buy. I
know it's not where you wanted to be, and you
probably feel like there is potential not yet tapped with
this team. But it's that been helpful at all that
you've kind of been this way for a.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Yeah, yeah, yeah it is.
Speaker 8 (16:50):
And and we're still not playing our best football by
any means, and we still, you know, the type of
games that we're playing in are winnable games. So I
think that we're very close to doing our thing, and
we have so much talent. It's just about coming together
doing our job. An offense scoring points, defense is balling out,
and special teams doing their job, and you know, we
(17:11):
do those type of things.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
I think great things will happen. Are good.
Speaker 9 (17:14):
I mean, you guys are putting Sunday in the rearview,
but can you shed any light on what happened on
the fort think people are speculating that Bellamar pass with
the DH right behind you.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
Yeah, you know, I don't know.
Speaker 8 (17:24):
I felt like his eyes were pretty much locked on me.
But again, I like saw you know that, And you
know there's obviously like you know, the the classic you know,
hate comments and whatever it is. You know it's crazy,
but you know, I'm just trying to make a play.
You know, I felt like, you know, I was working
to get open. I felt like, you know, I was
getting dragged on a little bit, so I went up
to go get a ball. You know, how am I
(17:45):
supposed to know? You Dias back there? But yeah, you
know it's perfootball.
Speaker 12 (17:50):
Yeah, and you said the contract mindset, is it kind
of there right now? But is it a relief just
even if you try to block out noise and sometimes
close your way, You've dealt with a lot, dealing with
the end of black season is just uncertainty this season,
trade speculation offseason that you do know you you are
here and think it's an I'm dropped.
Speaker 8 (18:06):
Well, it's certainly is nice to you know, have that
you know, affirmation, But you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna
continue to focus on and then keep the same mindset
that I've had and focusing each and every week and
keeping my head down and not worrying about the things
I can't control, and extremely thankful to have them put
that faith in me, and I'm gonna continue to work
be the player that the best player that I can
(18:26):
be and help this team win games and that's my
goal work.
Speaker 11 (18:30):
As an offense.
Speaker 7 (18:31):
Do you guys feel like they're still trying to find
your identity and disabilities?
Speaker 8 (18:35):
I don't think so. You know, I think that you know,
there's h you know, throughout the games, there's there there's
been mistakes, and you know, I think that, uh, it's everybody,
it's everybody you know, putting in and uh, I think
if we just clean those up, you know, good things
are gonna happen. I think at times removing the ball
really really well and just just limiting you know, the
short drives and being able to move the ball. But
(18:57):
I'm proud of the guys. I think that we haven't
played our best ball and that's gonna come.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
We also heard from outside linebacker Tavius Robinson, who's been
on injured reserves is bidway through the season as he
dealt with the foot injury. He talked about being back
on the field and his mindset going into this week's
game against the Bengals.
Speaker 4 (19:24):
So Thabe, it's just how good it feel to get
back out there.
Speaker 7 (19:26):
How do you feel?
Speaker 13 (19:27):
Yeah, I feel so good to get back out there.
You know, it's a blessing to be back out with
my brothers and just you know, excited to go out
there and ball with them.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
For sure.
Speaker 7 (19:34):
For a guy who you had never missed even a practice,
let alone a game for yeah, to have your first injury.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Like that, just how.
Speaker 13 (19:42):
Yeah, you know, it was really tough after the start,
especially the first couple of weeks there, you know, not
being able to do much, you know, watching at home
definitely sucked. But you know, there was two ways I
could look at I could either you know, be frustrated
and mad at it, or just attack rehab. And really
that's that's kind of what I did. Just put my
head down and did everything I could get back as
fast as possible.
Speaker 2 (19:59):
So say, what's what's the process that particularly.
Speaker 13 (20:01):
Of Yeah, I think it was just you know, again,
it was just weeks of rehab and now you know,
feel great, feel you know, they don't even really recognize
the foot anymore.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
She feels normal. So yeah, it's just about getting back.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
And yeah, how about you issue just play game again.
Speaker 13 (20:15):
Yeah, I'm I'm so excited to just play a game.
And like I said, like watching on TV was very
hard the first couple of weeks, just cause you wanna
be out there with your guys, you know what I mean.
Speaker 7 (20:23):
So take it since the as far is old, it's
changed a lot since you last played.
Speaker 9 (20:27):
Just what's been You're impressionable you see and watch those gusts.
Speaker 13 (20:30):
Yeah, I think you know, the uh, the addition of
best like Dre what was great and you know, getting
in the film room with him, you know, it's it's
great to just bounce ideas off of him and again
watch his play style and all that stuff. So I
think as a unit, they've we we've come a long way,
and you know, still uh a lot more to do
for sure, Taking.
Speaker 6 (20:44):
Sure guy who never missed a practice, never missed the
work or anything before.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
It's just kind of fence, what was this likely? You
don't through this?
Speaker 13 (20:53):
Yeah? I think you know, I think it's gonna make
me stronger. Honestly, again with with the rehab or part
of it. You it was just about coming in every
day and attack me in like a practice day. So
that's kind of what I did, and I think you
know it'll pay off as because I don't really feel
the foot anymore. I don't feel good, so I think
it will definitely pay off.
Speaker 8 (21:11):
Yeah, feeling very great to go.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
I feel like I'm ready to go for sure.
Speaker 12 (21:14):
What's it been like to watch the team kind of
have to claw it's way back from one and five
while you're doing this rehab and now must win mode
again to reach the playoffs to give you guys want and.
Speaker 13 (21:23):
Now you're gonna be a part of that foot Sure, m's.
Speaker 12 (21:25):
Have been like to see that all in pools while
you're trying to get back and knowing you're.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Going into that.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (21:28):
No, it's been great to see those teams, like you said,
claw back, you know, put ourselves in a position to
go win the game.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
Is we kind of naked to the stag games?
Speaker 13 (21:37):
So yeah, now you don't be back. That's important to
again take it one game at a time right now,
all eyes and focused on.
Speaker 4 (21:44):
The season at e back, so.
Speaker 5 (21:46):
There's no past rushes and searching for seatres so recent games.
Speaker 13 (21:50):
What are you hoping to add to it? Yeah, I'm
hoping to just get back out there, bring you know,
little juice and spring, you know, that energy to it
and all of this, like sideline, but you know, just
give us an energy to go out there and you know,
get it done.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
Affect the quarterback.
Speaker 9 (22:03):
So how tough is it to get out of any.
Speaker 13 (22:06):
I think it's just you know, obviously he's a great quarterback,
so it's gonna be big on.
Speaker 4 (22:10):
I was doing our jobs executed, you know, up front,
and we get.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
To them and bring them down and feeling great doing
sustain playing Sunday.
Speaker 10 (22:19):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure, you said it was really tough
watching games are just gonna take us inside?
Speaker 2 (22:24):
Was that like when you're your house watching games? How
are you all? Jack?
Speaker 13 (22:30):
Honestly, like the first two games was like hard for
me to watch because I felt like, truthfully, like I
was letting my team there not being out there. So
it was hard to even like just stump and watching,
you know, my guys go out there. Once I was
able to get on the sideline and kind of have
the ear piece in and all that, it was easier
to you know, be a part of it.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
But yeah, it was hard at the start for sure, being.
Speaker 12 (22:47):
Forced to watch where you're able to learn anything from
having a different perspective.
Speaker 13 (22:52):
Yeah, I think, you know, first of all, it's just
it's a reminder to, you know, never take a snap
for granted, Like I was kind of saying when I her,
like I would die to just go out there and
play a field goal blocks, not like anything. So it's
like it's a reminder of never to take it for granted,
every play, every snap, pass, the d full effort for everything,
(23:12):
because you never know where to be taken away.
