Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcoming into the Ravens Press Past podcast. It is Tuesday,
November twenty fifth. The Ravens are preparing to take on
the Cincinnati Bengals on Thanksgiving at M and T Bank Stadium.
Today we had a chance to hear from head coach
John Hartwall.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Good to see everybody.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Appreciate you guys being here again, and we're right back
at it.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Short week.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Obviously we're playing playing in two days, so I had
a good practice today and we're excited about the challenge
and also Thanksgiving, so ready for both.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
What questions you have, John, when going fending a.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Guy like Mark Age, it's kind of at the top
of the priority list when it comes to this.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Fine, if you came time, well, I mean, you know,
tackling probably is the number one thing with him and
and number thirty. I mean those two guys, number one
and number thirty are start there. You know, they got
a lot of guys, and you've got to be aware
of everybody because they have a lot of guys that
can make plays. But those two guys, you got to
get him on the ground, so uh be in a position,
(01:03):
eyes in the right spot, playing leverage on different things
like screens, and things like that are gonna be very important.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
John, you mentioned there's a chance for Kyle Hamilton. We
saw him go out there. How did he look. He
looked good today. Yeah, he had a good practice. He
was he was. I think he'll be a full participant.
I would. I would assume based on what I saw.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
Is a similar question.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
The shot he returned as well.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Is he still on track you think to play on Thursday?
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Rashad was full participant as well. Yeah, so he looks good.
Speaker 6 (01:38):
Another question on you know, Joe Burrow obviously chats and
you know big games, you know, a full career, first
game back, I'm sure you have high expectations for Yeah,
sort of does the challenge or what do you have
to do to kind of slow him down?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Well, I mean we've played him enough to understand kind
of how he plays and and and how he fits
into the offense, how he fits in with the receivers
they have and things like that, and you kind of
look at what they've been doing the last few weeks.
I mean, they're going to continue down the path of
their offense, but they do a really good job. I
mean they have a really well organized offense. They know
what they're doing that. They have the principles are built
(02:18):
into it and those are the things you have to
contend with and now with Joe executing them, you know,
and he's he's the foremost guy. I mean, he's the
system was built for Joe Burrow. So that's what we're
looking at, trying to defend.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
I'm like bringing to someone. It seems like he's showing
up more and more every than you.
Speaker 7 (02:36):
What are you saying in his development and how's valuable?
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Is he becoming his.
Speaker 8 (02:40):
Part of part of the post?
Speaker 3 (02:41):
Yeah, Luke, I agree, I mean he's he's he's really
like he's ramping it up. You know, he's making some plays.
He had a couple of crazy good reactions that screen
passes and different things that were just just natural football
player moves. Uh, he's been pressuring the quarterback. He's I
think the pass push is starting to really heat up.
But one of the more advance it's young all around
players probably that we've had in a while. So he
(03:04):
looks good, I believe.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, group in general, since you've got three, mind.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Are those guys kind of all upping each other like
they play each other?
Speaker 9 (03:15):
Well?
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Pause your group fit together well?
Speaker 3 (03:18):
I think they do fit together well. You know, they
they are playing off each other, well, aren't they. They
kind of they kind of compliment each other. I guess
in a way, they're all good players and they're they're
all but they're all still in the same kind of style.
Speaker 10 (03:30):
You know.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
David A. Job was the same way.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
I mean, they're all they're strong, they're physical, they're heavy
handed players. They're also quick, you know, they're explosive players,
and they play really hard, you know, and that's something
that we require. So I think they fit each other
really well, and they fit us really well.
Speaker 8 (03:48):
John, I know you mentioned that Thanksgiving is their favorite holidays.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
What about this team.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
This year that the bank. Ah, Well, it's a great question.
I'm thankful for.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
I guess with this team, it's who they've proven to be.
You know, Adversity, you know, you used to hear the
other thing university builds character. I think it kind of
it kind of it kind of shows character, you know,
and the more the more success you have sometime, but
it shows who you really are, and the more challenges
(04:22):
you have sometimes it shows who you really are, right
and through these challenges. Is to see these guys respond
the way they did uh together every day was really
great and then uh, and now that we're you know,
on the break of having success, they haven't changed one bit.
They're the same, you know. So I'm kind of proud
of that and I'm grateful for that, just who they
are character wise.
Speaker 8 (04:41):
John speaking a challenge what you've seen from Lamar the
past few weeks and maybe he's not as healthy as
you guys still win the games, obviously, you.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Know, the probably wasn't playing as best in those games.
Speaker 6 (04:54):
What have you seen the kind of getting through those.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
For the last few.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Weeks, right, Well, I feel like Lamar's playing winning football
in games that you have to find a way to
do what's required to win the game, you know, and
that's that's different in every game, and he's he's been
doing that, you know, whether you know, sometimes you take
some things for granted, you know, you protect the football
or or you operate the right way, you know, or
(05:18):
you get us down the field. I mean, we've had
some key drives in the in the in the at
the end of the game, second half and fourth quarter
that have been have been game winners for us an offense.
So it's like, well, you know, you may be referring
to you know, quote unquote gaudy stats and things like that,
But how about the fourth quarter stats? You know, I
think Lamar's got a one forty four quarterback grading in
(05:40):
the fourth quarter when the game needs to be one
And that's when these games have need to have needed
to be won in the last three, four, five weeks.
So that's probably the most important stat And so that's
that's what I see.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
Two more earlier about Jamar Chase is coming back on office.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Suspense, and I'm sure he's just getting that ready.
Speaker 9 (05:59):
To play it, but they're not gonna happen.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Does he merrit double coverage?
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Jamar Chase certainly does merit double coverage. I mean he's
he's one of the premium receivers in the league for sure.
Uh It's it's hard to get to that because you've
got some weapons out there. As soon as you start
as soon as you start pulling the coverage too far
away from other guys, and other guys start making plays
on you. So we'll have to balance all that out
with what we do. But uh, yeah, he's he's one
(06:25):
of the top guys in the league for sure.
Speaker 7 (06:28):
I can't recall Lamar having battled a toe injury before.
I guess just how important is a day like today
just to kind of figure out if you are if
it is limited in any way, just to kind of
understand how you can be comfortable out on the field.
Speaker 10 (06:40):
And also just you know, the walk.
Speaker 7 (06:41):
Through that you guys have tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
I think it's always part of it, you know, just
to kind of see how guys are, how guys any player,
any player, how they're moving, how they're how they're responding,
stuff like that. And he looked, he looked very good today.
He'll answer it for you up here. But then you know,
with any player, you kind of see how they're feeling
all through the week and even on game day, you know,
you kind of you kind of try to get sense
of that.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
But you look good today, all right, Thanks? Great? Thanks.
Speaker 5 (07:06):

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Actually heard from quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
You didn't want to keep playing on Christmas? And how's
your feelings about playing with Thanksgiving? Same? Probably the same?
Speaker 11 (07:44):
You know, I'd rather be sitting down Washington Football eating,
shinning with my family.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
But you know, it's great to count things giving and
I feel, you know, my first time. Is that our
first time? First time? Yeah, first time planning on thingsgiving?
Speaker 11 (07:54):
So it's gonna be different from me usually I'm watching,
like I said, eating well, playing looking forward to it.
Speaker 9 (08:01):
Is there a Thanksgiving game memory that you had us
or hasn't got still.
Speaker 10 (08:04):
Watching it with a family?
Speaker 2 (08:07):
I don't remember. I can't call it.
Speaker 11 (08:09):
All I know is I was always watching the Cowboys.
That was my favorite team growing up, Cowboys, So I
was always watching them.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Or when when did your toes start bothering? Or was
this just one? It's just picking this compilation of things
over time, now that.
Speaker 11 (08:21):
It actually happened in the game, Like you know, I
just got fill on. But I'm good, uh like Toad's good?
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (08:29):
Is it getting annoying though? It's something different every week
than you.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
After the war.
Speaker 9 (08:32):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (08:33):
Talking about it, talking about it is like talking about
something that happened, you know, But it is what it is.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
You know. It's part of the part of the job,
part of the game.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
But hopefully nothing is Thursday. Yeah, Mark, you remember when
that co injury happened. Uh F first quarter?
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
I got tackled one play guy.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (08:53):
I I wouldn't just say I I wouldn't say it's intentional.
You know, it was just playing football, regular tackle. He
just dropped all his way.
Speaker 10 (09:00):
So yeah, well, why I just give it the coldest
game of the season so far, and it starts to
string it will probably be five or six very cold
weather games. How does that impact the way you prepare
and the way you put together? You know, your offense.
No one's gonna be windy, it's gonna be cold. It's
not gonna be pleasant.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (09:20):
You know it starts in practice, you know, Uh with
the wind aspect. You know, I'm saying practice outside, get
used to it, get accustomed to the wind, you know,
just throwing into it, throwing away from it, uh, throwing
with the win sometimes, you know, just try.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
To put different gugetories on the ball. But I'm throwing.
That's about it. Cause can't control the weather at least
I can't.
Speaker 10 (09:38):
Y wor I feel like every time you now, uh
like the usually laughing before it.
Speaker 6 (09:45):
You always been that way of why any why is that?
Speaker 11 (09:49):
I don't know, I'm having fun doing something I love,
you know, so that's why I'm probably laughing.
Speaker 10 (09:54):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (09:54):
You know my guys, you know, they be cracking jokes
and stuff like that. It probably don't get it all
the time, but yeah, so that p a part of
it too.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Or are you in the bangers and guess some big
matches against just still moti the ars?
Speaker 11 (10:06):
Like what seems out to me when you get the
letter sting at this tribal s back and forth? You know,
it seems like every time we paid him, we've been
going back and forth. Great quarterback over there, you know,
great receiving corps. So just looking forward to it again,
you know, hopefully they don't be going back and forth.
Hopefully there's one side and then it's our side.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
So yeah, what what's that like for you? Watching?
Speaker 6 (10:29):
You know Joe was gonna play this with Joe Burrow?
Speaker 2 (10:32):
What's it?
Speaker 1 (10:33):
What's it like?
Speaker 2 (10:33):
Just watching him. And you know, when you when you
to your point, like he' said, some.
Speaker 6 (10:38):
Big games, when it's like you're standing there up the
sideline and and senior him perform.
Speaker 11 (10:43):
Uh me, I'm just hoping, you know, cause he's a
great quarterback, you know, just hope hopefully they don't score
any points. You know, just get him out to feel
fast as possible. Defense, just do their nine to eleven
or do they job? And uh just put us back
on the field, you know, cause I'll be tired of
seeing him. Thought the t Higgins and you know Jamar Chase,
cause those guys they do a great job, you know,
putting points on the board for the team and performing.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Or is it tough out then?
Speaker 10 (11:05):
Is a tough not to allow frustration coming to set
in with you when the physical issues have sort of
mounted and seemingly a new thing every week. Is a
tough not to kind of feel like what would be
what am I gonnaver feel? Under rest?
Speaker 11 (11:20):
You know, I don't think about that. You know, we win,
so that's what it's all about. You know, I can't
control the uh injury. You know, things like that happen. Unfortunately,
it just happening for the wrong time. I believe what
we wining. So that's all my focus on.
Speaker 10 (11:33):
Do the other things feel better at this point or
is it just kind of a compilation of things.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
I'm feeling better in some areas.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
You said on Sunday, you know, with your view is
like like if I'm out there, I should be able
to play and do all the things I normally do.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Has it been difficult to.
Speaker 6 (11:54):
To try to manage through each of those things over
the course of weeks and they sort of play, we
die or or figure out how to play through it?
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Uh?
Speaker 11 (12:03):
Nah, you know, I just get treatment, you know, and
when a Sunday come Thursday, you know what's gona what's
about to happen this week?
Speaker 2 (12:09):
You know, I don't think about it. I just go
out there and play. Ronnie Stanley set off. It's great
to her win these games. Five.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
You know, we can't be a super Bowl game or
the offense is playing the sway we need the game
more we.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Ob viewers agree with that.
Speaker 11 (12:22):
Out he absolutely gotta put points on the board, you know,
can't keep putting loop out there to you know, win
us one uh each and every job, you know, cause
it's gonna be some times when we going to getst
a high motive offense and uh, they might score a
lot of points and we gonna have to match those guys.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
So you just gotta do our job. And I agree
with running remark similar to that day.
Speaker 11 (12:44):
He mentioned yesterday about starting fast and you talked about
the back and forth with the thing goes, So how
important is it to get off to.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
A fast start?
Speaker 11 (12:51):
I'm thea, Uh, very important. Get off to a fast
start and keep that pace and in the game, you know, fast,
that's what we need to.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
Do, thou And just for home game like this that
night ninety.
Speaker 11 (13:07):
I can't call it, you know, just being in the bank, Uh,
the crowd noise, you know, just hearing our fans popping
out their sh skins and we just going out there
and it pitch black, Like I don't know, it's something
something about that setting, you know that that was like
just turned up.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
I don't know, I can't call it.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
They also heard from outside linebacker at Draymond Jones.
Speaker 4 (13:36):
What's what's the challenge when they're going against the Joe
Burrow and hasn't played a a lot since September, There's
gonna be a challenge.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Going against him. Come back.
Speaker 9 (13:44):
I mean, Joe professional, Joe has been one of the
best for a while. So it doesn't matter that they
didn't play a lot. The it matters that how can
we find ways to stop him when he's back there.
He's lethal, so we gotta to do our part.
Speaker 10 (13:56):
That's frush.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Before you got here, it struggled earlier in the year
with injuries and such. But since you've been here, what's
been your impression of just how this group has worked together?
Speaker 9 (14:03):
And then what's clicked these last few weeks.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Just staying resilient.
Speaker 9 (14:07):
This group has been just consistent since I've been here,
Like whether there's a good game or bad game.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
You know, they're always looking to be better and working.
Speaker 9 (14:15):
You know, they put they put the last game, but
beside them and weren't focused on a new opponent each
and every weekend. Something you gotta respect and appreciation just
to you know, any bs or anything positive.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
You gotta just look forward no matter what.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
Guy like Mike Green, I mean, whether it's whether it's
with any wisdom you can ubay or just the way you.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Guys just play out from each other.
Speaker 9 (14:33):
Yeah, like how we jail, how we put out each other.
Any wisdom that I that I have to to get
to him. You know, we can we can be lethal,
you know if we do it the right waym nah,
that's a weak thing.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
But it was funny though. It just made sense because
my name is Drake.
Speaker 9 (14:54):
Matt's not dray mam.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
But you know, it's not catching up. You come to
a consensus on a duo nickname.
Speaker 9 (15:01):
Du nickname Mike Green and Dre that's our name, that's
our do our name.
Speaker 1 (15:10):
