Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome back to Press Past podcast. It's Wednesday, September third
and week one. The Ravens just wrapped up another practice
and we heard from head coach John Harball as he
previewed the Bills matchup.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Okay, great to see everybody here. Appreciate you being here
very much. Beautiful day, really good practice and all eyes.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Pointed towards Sunday. What questions do you.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
Have, John.
Speaker 5 (00:27):
Would be, Yeah, we've all talked about what happened last
I mean, you've known him a lot.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
I think I had that great I mean, Mark soapro
He's been doing this a long time. He's been in
a lot of tough stadiums, a lot of tough environments
to play football. And he's he's uh, he's a great
football player, worked really hard, very prepared for the game,
just like all the guys. It's really I think it's true.
It's more it's more about everybody than it is about
one person. You know, It's it's a team going in there,
(00:55):
and you know we're not we're not shying away from
the reality that that's that's the game, that's the last game.
And we played and we didn't win, and we were
disappointed by it, and we respect. We respect the Bills
very much, and we know we got a tough game
in front of us and how good they're and well
coach they are. But you know, we're very confident team too,
and we know what a tough environment is. But we're
very confident we can handle a tough environment. So we
(01:16):
know it's our first game. Let's go in and see
where we're at and go from there.
Speaker 6 (01:19):
Yeah, a team does get deep in January and it
has a disappointing result. Layers are required to mental league
to put yourselves back in a position get to get
there again.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
I think you just go to work and you become
the best team that you can become, you know, for
the next time you play.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
And that's what we've done.
Speaker 7 (01:36):
How much is to talk about, hey, you can't, you know,
have three turnovers versus here's what we need to do
x Y, and it's both. Is one of the other
more short than the other?
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, I mean you can't. I guess it's kind of
semantics really. I mean, you know, we know what it requires.
You know, if wed have gotten three turnovers, it winn
thet matter that we had three turnovers, you know, that's
part of it too. You can talk about anything you want,
You can do any kind of Matthew want. But what
we're really trying to do is just chase the best
football that we can from one play to the next.
Do all the impactful important things as well as we
(02:07):
can from one play the next play.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Our best play, our best football.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Uh and let the chips fall as they do, you know,
and uh, we're not.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
You know, you can't. You can't determine the outcome.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Accept to the degree that you take care of the
process and you go out there and fight and compete
and uh and play well.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
And that's what we're gonna try to do.
Speaker 8 (02:25):
John feel pretty fortunate that a guy like great think
your parents available.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Yes, yes, Jeff definitely do.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Uh very feel very uh blessed.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Okay, let's use that word. Uh that uh J T.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
Grayce here who wanted to be here and uh and
he'll be contributing very soon, I'm sure.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
On special teams for US coach in some way.
Speaker 8 (02:49):
It says this it's the hardest team to prepare for.
Speaker 9 (02:51):
Only that you haven't seen the those starters at all
just here, or is it the easiest because if they're
on the schedule, the longest and you've had the longest.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Time to how do we say it's both It's both
the hardest and the easiest at the same time, just
for those very good reasons that you put forth.
Speaker 10 (03:07):
John, you've changed in the last years to where now
most starters don't play it all in the preseason. What's
the challenge there versus you know, previous years in terms
of having these guys go you know, supposed to be
right away in their first action.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, I mean, I do think there's there's something to that,
you know, the h being out there in a game
and kind of getting the feel for the game. The
game is different in practice, It's it's true, So you
just got to kind of get in there and get
after it, you know, and get your first hit, loosen
up your pads a little bit, and and go play ball.
So don't discount that for sure. I mean, we understand
as part of it.
Speaker 11 (03:39):
To that tackling.
Speaker 12 (03:40):
It just seems especially when we don't play a lot
of starters, and it seems like tackling and training camps
around the league has gone down. Is there any more
emphasis on that part Going into the first game of
the season.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
We emphasize tackling really as much as you can possibly
emphasize anything. I mean, tackling is the name of the
game on defense, just like blocking is the name of
the game on offense. Didn't Vin somebody say that. He
did look it up. The game is blocking and tackling.
So yes, it's very important. The fact that they haven't
(04:12):
tackled in a preseason game is something to take into.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Account for sure.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
But I'm also very confident that we're gonna go out
there and you're gonna see a good tackling defense.
Speaker 8 (04:22):
Out there.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Does he need to build back up at all?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Or has he been doing enough in there that that's
not really been the case to serve day.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
We'll see see how it goes this week.
Speaker 8 (04:30):
I know it's hard on account of what I say,
I like it for this Sunday. How do you see
someone like Party calling degal community of the game for
this game.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, great opportunity for Charlie for sure. You know that's
Charlie's been working hard, man, He's he's prepared.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Like nobody else. I'm really I'm really feeling.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Very blessed about that too, Jeff, that Charlie is is
with us because he's he's becoming all around tight end
and we expect him to play at a really high level.
Speaker 8 (04:55):
John obviously special teams.
Speaker 13 (04:57):
You have a lot of reis and that base office
and Tyler all lies on him.
Speaker 8 (05:02):
Is there anything specific as the game started, look before
from the rookies and how they compose themselves in a
tough road game.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
Yeah, probably just what you just said. That composure part
of it. You know, it's you're gonna be out there
and it's going to be raucous environment and uh and
and and you know your heart rate's going to go up,
you know, and you're gonna you're your breathing is going
to go up, and you're gonna be excited, you know.
And the thing that I tell them the same thing
my dad told me way back when before my first
(05:29):
high school game at Anabro Pioneer High School when I
was fifteen, starting at right corner for the Pioneer Pioneers.
What high school has the same that's o ourntinu Antarbra
Pioneer Pioneers and uh we played number one ranked Detroit
Catholic Central and uh, he told me just take a
deep breath, just take a deep breath before the first
(05:49):
play and slow your brain down and everything will be okay.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
It turned out really well.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
But I mean, I'm really happy to share some stories
with you, you know, when we have more time, When.
Speaker 13 (06:00):
You have as many guys on offense as you do,
have self confidence and their.
Speaker 9 (06:04):
Abilities and the general you know that they can do
protective stuff with the ball. Is there ever a challenge
with the getting guys to buy in that, you know,
sometimes less is more for this team.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Well, you know, that's a great question, and it's not
really something that we spend a lot of time thinking
about because I just think that it's understood, you know,
and and football is a team game. It's a team sport,
and you're one of eleven out there doing your part,
and nobody can do anything without the other the other
ten guys. And yet at the same time, we also
want guys who want the ball. You know, if you
(06:35):
don't want the ball and you're a you're a skill
player on offense, it's just like a corner who doesn't
want them to throw the ball over there.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
I promise you our corners want them to throw the
ball over there, you know.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
So, uh, I'm pretty sure cal Ripkin wanted them to
hit the ball to the shortstop when he was playing shortstop. Right,
So that's uh, we don't mind that either. There's one
pretty long yeah coming up Saturday, right, pretty awesome.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
We have shout out the cow.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
Yep, we haven't.
Speaker 7 (07:03):
Seen power card and a good couple of weeks or
so since I know he was dealing with the soft
tissue things.
Speaker 8 (07:10):
Is that chances.
Speaker 7 (07:12):
Him playing at this point are probably unlikely.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Or probably could do the odds, I mean they probably
have that. They probably have that.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
I'll bet they have the odds on that, don't they
Can you bet on that too?
Speaker 3 (07:24):
I wouldn't know they don't have that.
Speaker 8 (07:28):
You can't do that.
Speaker 14 (07:30):
You can't do that that much thought.
Speaker 8 (07:32):
Is it tough to or has he been trying to
ramp up?
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Or what's why don't we just leave that for later?
You know? Thank you?
Speaker 8 (07:40):
Thank you?
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Yeah, yeah, I appreciate the question.
Speaker 15 (07:47):
Related for odds. But we did see Isaiah likely come
out and talk to you before practice. I'm not saying
that it doesn't happen, but it is a little unusual.
Just what was that visit like and how has he
been handling just the process of being case but now
knowing the seasons upon and he wants to.
Speaker 6 (08:02):
Be a part of it.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, I'd say he's probably been. After about the first
two days, he kind of he kind of locked in
and got patient, became patient and has done really well
and really and really good.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
I would say maybe ahead.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Of schedule probably, So we'll just have to see how
that goes going forward. But yeah, I think he's been
he's been good. You know, he's probably gonna start getting
antsy here pretty soon though.
Speaker 13 (08:27):
You're two more, John, have you noticed an extra layer
of confidence or anything different than Zach Moore because he
appears to leave this year in the year too.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
No, he was, He's always Zach.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
You guys all know Zach, right, and you know the
cliff he answered, He's always confident.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
I just think the energy.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
I think there's an extra layer of experience for sure. Uh,
he definitely, we all. I mean that's true for me too,
It's true for all of us. But the fact that
he's got this year passed under his belt, went through
the kind of year that we went through last year,
I think that brings confidence in and of itself, right,
And he's just done a he's done a phenomenal job.
But he'll be the first to tell you. We'll find out,
(09:04):
you know, this year, what kind of job? And and
I just I really I just am impressed with I
told him today him all the defensive coaches. I was
in the defensive meeting. I thought it was a great
defensive meeting. I thought the preparation was outstanding, you know.
And he's leading that so uh yeah, he's uh, it's
definitely it's it's another year in and that's good.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
All good, good, Thanks.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Quarterback. Lamar Jackson addressed the media.
Speaker 8 (09:34):
So, Lamar, you returned to where the season ended.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
What do you think after playing, you know, after that
game and going into this game, what do you think
is the biggest key for you guys to change the results?
Speaker 14 (09:47):
Don't turn the ball over?
Speaker 16 (09:49):
You know, finished drafts put out to him in a
great position to win.
Speaker 8 (09:54):
So well, Mar, how many times he's gone back and
watch the Buffalo game.
Speaker 16 (09:57):
In the all, I can't count just watching film a lot,
but just me going back to see like a loss.
Speaker 14 (10:05):
Ah, I don't know when you look at the film,
what are you saying, guy, I see we coulda did better.
That's it.
Speaker 13 (10:15):
We talked to more a couple of times about that
game and and looking forward to this one. He says,
he's very excited, he looks very motivated drug camp. What
do you kind of see him from your teammates but
that you come to know, and what do you think?
What do you expect going into Sunday's game? Oh?
Speaker 16 (10:29):
The mark that we always get, you know, Uh, A
guy who loves football, guy who's eager to win, who
wants to win.
Speaker 14 (10:36):
Uh, the same guy, you know, nothing change.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
At more.
Speaker 8 (10:41):
I'm sure you saw the video of uh what's over
there by? Uh, fans messages and comments, these kind of
things come up and inspirating or just started to see them.
Speaker 16 (10:51):
Oh, I I love stuff like that. Man shout out
to the fans. Man, Uh, the little kids. It's it's
all love, man, you know. Uh, that just motivates me
a lot.
Speaker 14 (10:59):
I can't. I can't tell you guys how much I
love it.
Speaker 16 (11:02):
You know, I love them. God, I love everyone back
just as much as they love me.
Speaker 6 (11:07):
What you've been to experience a couple of times where
you be the team gets deep in January and it
has a you know, a very difficult loss, and you
gotta start like backing the bombing out and it's like
months away before you have a chance to get to
you know, deact like a playoff that game, Like what
is a mental challenge of that? Knowing that it's gonna
take a lot and time, a lot of work to
get back to an a chance to do it.
Speaker 16 (11:27):
Oh man, it's really just going to get your team
over and over again, like you know, like you said,
you know, it takes so long for us to get
in this situation. But now it's here but me just
going against my guys and pretty much knowing my guys
and not like the defenses in and out. It's like, man,
I can't wait to play my opponent. You know, I'm
tired of playing against my team. You know, it's tired
of it's time to take our frustration. I don't know
those gods. So that's pretty much how I look at it.
Speaker 8 (11:49):
Well, what is it after you about this?
Speaker 12 (11:50):
Uh, it's this team's preparation over the course of the
off season and training game.
Speaker 16 (11:55):
Everyone just died in you know, everyone just been hit
the ground running.
Speaker 14 (12:00):
Uh. It really it.
Speaker 16 (12:01):
It really hasn't been any lack I uh like s
lasadaisy Uh out down the field. Our guys been communicating
a lot, you know, just everyone just love football.
Speaker 14 (12:09):
That's what I see from our guys right now?
Speaker 8 (12:11):
You talking about the name being even more vocal?
Speaker 10 (12:13):
Uh this year?
Speaker 8 (12:14):
Yeah? How did how would you have you got about
that and draining game.
Speaker 16 (12:17):
Or friends you that are of course your your I
mean I feel like the guys will pretty much tell
you know.
Speaker 14 (12:21):
I can't really call it, you know.
Speaker 16 (12:23):
I just when I see something that's I don't agree with,
I speak my mom.
Speaker 14 (12:28):
Uh. I just wanna see everyone do good.
Speaker 8 (12:31):
Or more real?
Speaker 7 (12:32):
And then you didn't go back like watch the game
other than film or whatever. But what did you think
when you saw a Buffalo first game of this season
for this year?
Speaker 8 (12:41):
Like what over through your head?
Speaker 14 (12:44):
Nothing? You know, It's just like any other game.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
You know.
Speaker 14 (12:47):
I'm tryna wear regardless. I don't look at no point.
Speaker 16 (12:49):
I always tell you guys this, I always I don't
look at no point and be like I gotta beat them.
Speaker 14 (12:53):
I feel like we gotta beat everybody. You know. I'm
just locked in Mara with training camp.
Speaker 8 (12:58):
Now in the rearview of what did you learn about
the kind of weapons.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
That you have?
Speaker 8 (13:02):
Honest team? Throughout those practices, you guys have a want?
Speaker 16 (13:08):
I mean, I I pretty much just let they they
play do the talking. You know, I can't tell you
guys what I learned. You know what uh what I
f see with my guys. You guys gonna see it
come Sunday night.
Speaker 17 (13:18):
Well, you could have some explosive week ones in your
career without playing a preseason. How do you deal with
the sharpness aspect of you know, not having not played
a real game at in a while and then wanting.
Speaker 8 (13:29):
To be sharp Sunday night?
Speaker 18 (13:30):
Uh?
Speaker 16 (13:31):
Just practicing how you play, you know, competing extremely u
uh harder practice uh.
Speaker 14 (13:36):
Against my guys. Uh, guys just.
Speaker 16 (13:39):
You know, holding their coverages and you know, doing excited
blaxs and stuff like that. That's helping us out, you know,
from when the game come and even though we're not
getting hit. You know, it's like I I I take
everything like it's game speed, like it's a game scenario.
Speaker 14 (13:52):
And that's why I feel like I be prepared.
Speaker 17 (13:54):
Do you have a sense of where this offense is?
You know, readiness as opposed the other years there's you know,
you have to be with God.
Speaker 14 (14:01):
And all that.
Speaker 16 (14:02):
I never know, you know, I I feel like as
the game goes on, we pretty much find out you
you never know, you know it it's like on paper.
You know, everything look good on paper until you get
out there on the field. So I just find out
what we playing.
Speaker 7 (14:15):
But more l where you said a few times here
just th like we'll see on Sunday, you know, we'll
we'll look.
Speaker 8 (14:19):
We're looking forward to getting to that point and that's
where you get the chance to see it on the field.
Speaker 9 (14:23):
How would you describe your word eagerness to play a game,
to get back on that field, to play the game.
Speaker 14 (14:29):
I don't know. I'm pretty calm right now.
Speaker 16 (14:33):
I think it's a reason I'm calm, though, so I'm chilling,
but I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Or are are you aware?
Speaker 8 (14:40):
Are you?
Speaker 9 (14:40):
Are you kind of bubbleware getting out of experts that
are picking you guys to win the Super Bowl?
Speaker 8 (14:45):
Does it ever register on your great arc?
Speaker 14 (14:48):
Nah? We gotta win our games.
Speaker 16 (14:50):
Can't go to the super Bowl without making it to
the playoffs, you know, So we gotta focus on Buffalo
right now.
Speaker 14 (14:54):
We can't peek too soon. We can't peek. It's extremely
early to be thinking about the super Bowl.
Speaker 13 (14:59):
You know, Lamar, You're you're under contract for the next
couple of seasons, but you know your extension ELI eligible
Josh Allen sign an extension this offseason.
Speaker 8 (15:08):
Did you look to sign the extension at all this offseason?
And isn't possible with the series?
Speaker 16 (15:13):
I think I'll tell you all this all the time.
You know it's for it, Like, yeah, I hear that,
I hear that, But you know it's season here. I'm
not rid about that.
Speaker 14 (15:22):
You know.
Speaker 16 (15:23):
You a bet off actually that during the count So
but I'm locked in, man, I'm ready for the season
to start.
Speaker 14 (15:29):
That time will come so dobbly, no deal once the
season start. The season here, I'm looking forward to the season.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
Lamar.
Speaker 8 (15:41):
So you having some fun with that your speed the guy? Yeah, yeah,
how was that experience? And uh he he really challenge
you for that.
Speaker 16 (15:47):
Yeah, he ain't really challenged me for the next spring man. Nah,
but uh man, he dope.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
Man.
Speaker 16 (15:55):
He's a dope guy. Man, very exciting, you know, a
lot of energy, man, he was. It was a lot
of fun to go out there and uh have a
fun with those guys, him and the high schoolers. Yeah,
it was dope And it was a dope experience for
me cause I really don't be on stream so out
my first accounter.
Speaker 8 (16:08):
So we did we really recommend him to be a
part of the Ravens.
Speaker 16 (16:11):
I don't know, it's different when you getting hit with
paths on. I don't I like what he's doing. You know,
I want him to be safe. I don't need him
to get hurt out here with us. You know, let
us do all that.
Speaker 17 (16:20):
What you do all about it?
Speaker 8 (16:20):
You know, take care of the football.
Speaker 17 (16:22):
Are you happy it's gonna be you know, warmer or
elite Sunday or yeah?
Speaker 18 (16:27):
Matter?
Speaker 16 (16:27):
Uh, but you know it really doesn't matter cause obviously,
you know, we just seen we played in snow when
the playoffs came, So it really don't matter how we play.
You know, the wind column is all that matter. So
I'm just tryna win regardless.
Speaker 12 (16:39):
Mar Do you have kind of a forecast of what
the next layer of your game looks like? It seems
like each year somethy you get kind of sharping your
sword in a certain area. Is there anything you're trying
to do that at this year?
Speaker 16 (16:52):
Like I said this all the time too, everything, you know,
I really don't have anything spec speci uh specific that
I wanna just get better at. I'll try to get
better at everything. You know, you can always critique your
game and get better at something. You know, you get older,
you gotta you gotta, you gotta see what people with
other teams are trying to you know, stop you at
so just trying to get better at everything.
Speaker 9 (17:12):
Okay, I don't know if we ever asked you did
were you disappointed at all?
Speaker 14 (17:17):
It ge getting in in DV I mean the voters
soles who they wanted to pick. You know, it is
what it is. Yeah, what it is.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
We heard from Ravens tight end Mark Andrews.
Speaker 5 (17:37):
So going back to where the season ended in Buffalo
and you all know what happened now in Buffalo, how
how do you feel and do you feel there will
be different emotions for you going back to.
Speaker 19 (17:51):
That state at the end of the day. You know,
this is a new season. I've had a full training
camp of you know, getting better. It's a new team.
Speaker 8 (17:59):
Uh, you know.
Speaker 19 (18:00):
For for me, it's just just looking at it as
it's two really good teams going against each other. I'm
gonna play my part. I'm gonna do my job to
the best of my ability, which I'm excited about. It's
an incredible opportunity for this organization, for me, this team
and and everything we want to do. This year to
start it off right, So I'm excited about that with
all that, I hope so just.
Speaker 11 (18:17):
To finally get to game week for it's been such
a long off season, I imagine it feels like finally
it's Wednesday of the game.
Speaker 8 (18:23):
We feel like really back into a normal role, right,
It's that time.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
It's that time.
Speaker 19 (18:27):
We put in a lot of hard work and done
a lot of great things and grown as a team.
And I'm just excited to see where that takes us
and it starts week one.
Speaker 13 (18:35):
Is there anything you tweaked about your off season or
any any new focus it's been or is it just
sort of rely on the routine you developed.
Speaker 4 (18:44):
It's always just focused.
Speaker 8 (18:45):
Man.
Speaker 19 (18:45):
There's there's so many different parts of your game that
you're looking to get better at. You know it's perfect
and but just striving to to elevate each and every
way is something that you know, I look to do
each off season.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
That's what I did this year of where the offense.
Speaker 12 (18:58):
Is in training, can going into a season and what
is your feeling about where this year it is as
a whole.
Speaker 19 (19:03):
Unmus this year and we're going to find out, you know,
we're going to find out this year starts week one,
So that's the beauty this time of years.
Speaker 4 (19:09):
You know, we got to be hungry.
Speaker 3 (19:10):
You've got to be ready to go.
Speaker 19 (19:11):
And you know, I believe that we have a hungry team,
a team that's ready to go. We worked really, really
hard and this is gonna be a great test. So
that's the exciting part.
Speaker 4 (19:20):
Mark, How do you kind.
Speaker 10 (19:22):
Of leave the last game in Buffalo behind?
Speaker 19 (19:26):
You know, I'm a pro. You know this, this is
what I do, this is what I love to do.
This is my whole entire world. So for me, it's
up focusing, you know, doing my job and just just
knowing that the type of player that can be and
in this offense and for this organization, for the city,
and you know, I've never lost sight of that.
Speaker 7 (19:43):
So Mark, besides watching the game, come, have you gone
back and watched the game from Buffalo last.
Speaker 8 (19:48):
Year at all?
Speaker 4 (19:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 19 (19:49):
You know, of course I've watched the game and obviously
in game planning for for this year. But you know,
at the end of the day, you know, each year
is different. They played us different from the first game
the second game, so you never know truly what you're
gonna get. Again, I'm excited by this opportunity of going
to gets a really good team and it's gonna be
a good matchup.
Speaker 13 (20:06):
Did you get any advice from anybody who had been
in that position as you, or you know, maybe just
had some wisdom to share that they kind of carried
you through this offseason?
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Uh?
Speaker 19 (20:17):
You know, I got you know, great support and staff,
you know, with family and loved ones, and you know,
at the end of the day, I I trust them,
the people around me. I keep a small circle and
I don't listen to too much outside noise, and I'm
extremely grateful and blessed and put all my faith in God.
Speaker 14 (20:32):
Mark.
Speaker 7 (20:32):
I know you you know, if you don't really care
who you play and researcher, just take it as they come.
But was there any part of you that was, we're
happy to get that there, this game out of the
way week one and not have it sorted out there?
Speaker 19 (20:47):
You know, for me, it's it's whoever is in front,
it's all good man.
Speaker 8 (20:52):
You put up that.
Speaker 9 (20:53):
As social media posts like a week or so after
the game. Were you surprised at all just by how
much of there was for you current teammates for I mean,
obviously cartoon means that's right, but four teammates who just
shows you as.
Speaker 19 (21:05):
Reason support their comments that, Yeah, I don't know exactly
what you're talking about, you know, but.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
I didn't.
Speaker 3 (21:13):
I didn't.
Speaker 19 (21:13):
I didn't quite hear your your here.
Speaker 9 (21:16):
Instagram post that you've posted after after the game, just
explaining that you're grateful for supporting just your amount of
like players rapidly kind of came to her defensive.
Speaker 19 (21:26):
Yeah, at the end of the day, it's you know,
it's it's always good to have for people to have
your back.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
That's a good feeling.
Speaker 4 (21:32):
You know.
Speaker 19 (21:32):
I'm grateful for the people that are around me that
believe in me, that trusted me, And I think that's
evident in me being here. They trusted They've showed me
throughout the years, and you know, there's been you know,
countless times where step up make big plays, and I'm
excited to do that this year as well.
Speaker 8 (21:44):
Is not ready to go. Uh.
Speaker 11 (21:46):
You talked about Charlie Cole and his ability to step
up and be your one rat and that time.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
He's an incredible camp.
Speaker 19 (21:52):
It's like one of the best camps i've you know,
really ever seen by by a player.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Just a total stud.
Speaker 19 (21:57):
He's been balling out, you know, taking a big work
a workload, and you know, he just continued to make
big strides. He's doing incredible in the blocking game, but
he's running great routes and he's looking really fluid. So
I'm excited about him and he's gonna have a big year.
Speaker 8 (22:11):
We see good.
Speaker 6 (22:16):
You see a lot of teams that you know, get
deep in January having tough loss, they have in effects
the next season. Both of you guys and the Bills
have had some disappointments and then come back and had
like really good season next year. What is required of
a team of a franchise just sort of like draw
that line and have a good year after a tough loss.
Speaker 19 (22:32):
I think it's it's the guys that you have coming back.
You know, what type of guys do you have in
the locker room? You know, are they guys that you
know are looking towards that end goal? Are they focused?
Are they someone that gets down on themselves? And I
don't think that's the type of group that we have,
is people that get down. You know, we're looking to
get better. I think that each training camp we focused
on just the little things, to the details, and you know,
this is the time of year, first week, Week one,
(22:54):
game one, gets a great opponent to you know, do
our job, focus on the details, take care of the football,
football and good things will happen.
Speaker 7 (23:03):
Appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Thanks guys.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
And finally here from inside linebacker Roquan Smith about Sunday
Nights matchup.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
What's going on?
Speaker 8 (23:14):
So after it was the eight months, now finally get
back to, you know, a real game.
Speaker 14 (23:19):
How long?
Speaker 4 (23:20):
How long has it felt for you?
Speaker 18 (23:22):
Honestly, I didn't know it had been that long eight months.
It flies by, man, It's quicker than what you think.
But yeah, just very excited to get out there. Obviously
it's gonna be a hostile environment, a great opponent to
open up the season. We know it's on the line,
and you know it's the first game of the season.
So excited about that and ready to show the world.
Speaker 8 (23:41):
I would send it already. The fact that it's a
team that you last played and knock you out.
Speaker 18 (23:46):
Yeah, absolutely, very excited, you know, and it always like
early in the season. You definitely know where you are
playing against a really good team in Buffalo.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
So excited about that and have to.
Speaker 18 (23:55):
Go out there and do what we do and not
have stuff inflicted and if we do that, everything goes
to take care of itself.
Speaker 13 (24:01):
Obviously, it's you know, good for your physical to sit
out the preseason and it reduces the risk.
Speaker 8 (24:07):
But is there a part of you that watches.
Speaker 13 (24:08):
The preseason games and they're like, I can't wait until
it's me out there.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
No, I'm very I'm one of those guys. Man.
Speaker 18 (24:14):
I love seeing the younger guys, guys go earn their
opportunities throughout the preseason. A lot of guys wins jobs,
change their lives forever. So I'm big and seeing that
and you know, watching those guys go out there and
do that. I haven't really played in the preseason since
I've been a pro, so I don't really think it's
something that I need personally and whatnot.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
So, but to each his own.
Speaker 13 (24:37):
What was your reaction to Jay Higgins making the roster.
Speaker 18 (24:40):
Yeah, no, Jay, I think Jay's a tremendous player coming
out of Iowa. Very from what I know from Iowa,
I don't know much, but I know a lot of
those guys are fundamentally sound, play very hard, and like, man, yeah,
he's one of those guys. He knows how to get
to the football despite the measurements and things of that
nature has off to him for the way you work
(25:01):
each and every day, how you come in and always
just trying to get better and keep his head down.
Speaker 4 (25:06):
So got a lot of respect.
Speaker 11 (25:08):
For him death you're secondary. Now, how much does that
allow you to be as creative as you want to be?
Speaker 4 (25:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 18 (25:16):
Absolutely, I think that more so goes to z O
and that's his role. My role is the play linebacker
and play linebacker to the best of my ability, and
I leave all the rest of the z O for
how you want to disguise or whatever the case may be,
packages or whatever the case is, really.
Speaker 9 (25:31):
Not if you're comfortable, Like, how much better physically do
you feel right now?
Speaker 8 (25:35):
I'm there to week one last year.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
I feel really good right now. Another show and what
a couple of days.
Speaker 18 (25:40):
I'm not sure how many days it is until Sunday,
but when Sunday get here, that the show for sure.
Speaker 4 (25:45):
Where you're going.
Speaker 5 (25:46):
Against you know, Josh Allen kind of his style, like
your place quarterback, what's kind of the defensive focus or
you know, kind of your focus since you're the center
of the defense right there.
Speaker 18 (25:55):
Yeah, absolutely, I think first and foremost, going up against him.
I think it starts with stopping and run. Just truth
be told, like making the guys one dimensional, and that
starts with stopping Cook got a lot of respect for him,
the way he run the ball and whatnot, and stopping them,
making them one dimensional and forcing it to be a
drop back game. And when you do that, then things
can go a different direction. So it's got to start first,
(26:17):
stop the run, and then we'll go from there.
Speaker 4 (26:19):
And that's something that we will do forgo.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
We see a lot of NFL teams that get deep
into January have a tough loss and they can kind
of like infect the next season as well. You guys
in the builder too have like had some disappointing finishes
and come back and have the good season next year.
Like what is required to make sure that you know,
the heartbreaking loss or a tough loss in January doesn't
lead into the next year.
Speaker 18 (26:41):
I think that's life, man, life. You can't focus on
what's in the past. It's in the past for a reason.
You can use it as few but you should never
let something in the past affect how you look at.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
Things because it's a new day. It's a new team.
Speaker 18 (26:53):
This team is not the same as the same team
as last year and neither of other players. Yeah, we
are the same dudes, but each person and has changed
a bit regardless of how you look at it. And
I think every day in life teaches you that. So
I'm excited about the opportunity and I know it's gonna
be a great matchup for us in front of the world,
and we just get to go out and show exactly
who we are.
Speaker 13 (27:13):
Last week, Kyle Hamilton was talking about the whole team
and saying, as long as a tier, as long as
Labarn's here, we feel like we have a chance.
Speaker 8 (27:21):
Not so much has to go right to make a
run as the Bowl.
Speaker 13 (27:25):
But is there any specific thoughts that you have of
the way Labarn's played the last two seasons.
Speaker 8 (27:32):
You gotta take advantage, you gotta make the most. You
gotta end with the trophy up on the stage.
Speaker 18 (27:37):
Yeah, absolutely, calling big money k ham now though. But
outside of that, Yeah, we like like you said, I've
been saying that since I got here and when I
first got here. Anytime Lamar's on the team, you know
you have a chance to Hearstle on party. But I
think that's everybody's plan going into the season. So it's
about each and every one of us, like looking at
(27:57):
ourselves in the mirror and saying, what are we gonna
do to make.
Speaker 4 (27:59):
Sure that that's But it starts with this.
Speaker 18 (28:01):
Game, and it's one game at a time, one moment
at a time, and if we do that, play to
our standard, eliminate the self inflicted starting with week one
up in Buffalo and No One, we'll probably see them
again and then everything else will take care of yourself.
Speaker 8 (28:13):
You mentioned the.
Speaker 7 (28:14):
Fuel, and curious like when you saw the schedule come
out and Buffalo there it is week one. What was
your reaction and did you feel like, yeah, you know.
Speaker 8 (28:23):
We do need to use this as fuel for motivation
to kind of get past that.
Speaker 18 (28:27):
Honestly, I don't really see it as few because truth
be told, whoever it is, you can roll the ball,
like I've said many times on this pavement right here,
and like we can get down, you know. So at
the end of the day, it's like it's a team
that we have to play, and yeah, they are the
team that we lost to last year, but that's last
year and this year this year, and I'm focused and
I know the team is focused on going out there
(28:49):
Sunday night and showing the world exactly who we are
and not focused on anything else.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
I know, you know, nobody on the defense was very
satisfied with your performance through the first ten.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
Or so weeks last year.
Speaker 2 (29:01):
Is that's something you guys have talked about explicitly at
all going into this year, Like we got to hit
the ground running in a way.
Speaker 8 (29:05):
That we didn't.
Speaker 18 (29:07):
Yeah, like I think last year as a defense, Yet
we obviously then played the first couple of weeks the
way we wanted to so, and that's just each and
every person have to look themselves in the mirror, regardless.
And there are some tweaks, there's little things sometimes people make,
people make mistakes. Obviously that's human nature, but we know
that's not our standard. And again that's last year. We're
not focused on this year. It's a completely new team.
(29:29):
It's a completely new defense. Like I said, So I'm
excited about it, and I'm excited just to go out
and show the world and I'm sure you'll be tuned
in Sunday so you'll see that for yourself as well.
Speaker 10 (29:39):
Earlier this offseason, Marlon Humphrey had said that it feels
like the Ravens defense is.
Speaker 8 (29:46):
In fear the way it used to be. What's your
reaction to that.
Speaker 18 (29:51):
Yeah, I think there's some truth to that, and I
think it's more so about instilling fear into your opponents.
Speaker 4 (29:57):
And I think.
Speaker 18 (29:58):
That's just goes with the way you play ball, being relentless.
Any chance you get to take a cat out, you
take a cat out within the rules, obviously, but like
that's how you have to play and just play with
an attitude. And I think we play with that edge
and that attitude, play in, play out and do to
the best of our standard and to our standard each
and every individual that goes out there, and we'll we'll
(30:19):
instill that fear in the individuals. But it starts week one.
We have to show the world exactly who we are,
because we know who we are, so it's just not
about showing it and not having self inflicted appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Thanks for listening. We'll be back with you with another
edition of Press Past tomorrow, Thursday, September fourth,
