Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Past podcast. It is Monday,
September one. Week one is here. The Ravens were on
the practice field today getting ready for their opener against
the Buffalo Bills coming up on Sunday night in Orchard Park,
New York. As the Ravens prepared for that game, after
practice today, we had a chance to hear from some
of the guys as well as head coach John Harbaugh.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Okay, good to see everybody, Appreciate you being here. Good practice.
Got the guys back from the break. They got away
for a few days and saw family. Some traveled, some didn't,
and now we're back at it. So this is kind
of our getback in the swing of things practice all
pointing toward the Bills. Of course, Wednesday will be the first,
you know, kind of official practice of the week.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
So what questions, Jeff, John, A lot of players were
in that game.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Sure, I mean, you know, we're preparing for the Bills.
That's the team we played. That's the last game they played.
No second, the last game they played, the last game
we played. The last game they played that we cared about, honestly.
But we're watching that game. You watch, you watch all
the games you watch preseason games. Uh, it's just a
thorough evaluation of everything I think. You know, Yeah, sure,
(01:28):
I mean everything kind of motivates you. It's probably true
for any kind of circumstance. You always get motivated by disappointment,
for sure, and that's something that that certainly motivates us.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
John h a rap for him exact their injins.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Practicing this week, Yeah, that would be would be the key.
So we'll see where he's at Wednesday. Uh, he did
some things today, So that's kind of how it works.
But in terms of just injury updates, probably not going
to get much out of me. And you know, at
this point unless it's an obvious one, unless we know
what what's gonna you know, if a guy's gonna play
or he's not gonna play. Uh, So you might might
(02:11):
get a little more on Friday, just because you'll know
who's who hasn't practiced. They haven't practiced, they're unlikely to
play unless they've been playing all the way up to
that point. Then maybe they'll play. So I probably won't
tell you for sure unless I feel like it's obvious
that everybody knows already. So that's where we're at with that,
How does that if that makes sense?
Speaker 5 (02:30):
Did you did something out?
Speaker 6 (02:31):
What was he doing something else?
Speaker 3 (02:33):
He was working on?
Speaker 2 (02:33):
Not he was working today on physical stuff. And he's moving,
he's moving. You do you know what likely that he's
not He's not gonna be there this week. As I said,
that's probably what I'm not gonna share at this point
right now. I will see as the week goes on.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
When you look at that the Bills game from after you,
do you look at it from a flush it or
is there anything you kind of take from that into
outside of the obviously.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, no, you certainly don't flush it because there's a
lot to learn. I mean, we have to understand how
how the game went, how how they played us, what
the schemes were. There's a lot of there's a lot
of chess moves going on in that game that will
be built on this game on both sides of the ball.
And then uh yeah, of course, the way the game
is played, what we could have done better, certainly what
we did well, same for them, I'm sure too. John.
Speaker 7 (03:24):
You guys sticking over the captain tight games three layers,
that's something and I remember last.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Year you were captain Patris like cutchers right right when.
Speaker 4 (03:32):
You're still going to do game season?
Speaker 8 (03:39):
Thanks?
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Great, all right.
Speaker 8 (03:40):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
We also heard from veteran left tackle Rannie Stanley.
Speaker 7 (03:48):
When you watched, you know.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
As a team, watched some left throne from that last
Buffalo game kind of how how do you feel the
general feeling is, uh, because a lot of guys were
are returning from.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
That game too.
Speaker 9 (03:59):
Yeah, I mean, and definitely weren't happy with the result,
but you know, you saw a lot of good things
on there and a lot of positive things as well.
Speaker 7 (04:07):
How much is that being about it at all in
the locker room, especially with some of the turnover that's
going on, and has that been when.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
We saw that game, money schedule someth of you guys
started to converse.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
About in time?
Speaker 9 (04:20):
Yeah, I mean, you know, definitely that was the last
place you know, we played last season, and to be
able to start off the season like that, you know,
it's definitely been talked about and we're very excited for
that opportunity. Things change you get to week one, uh,
in terms of there's a lot.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Of kind of building up to this point and how to.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Get into a regular season about.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
How do things change from the preparation standpoint, mindset standpoint.
Speaker 9 (04:42):
I think it's just a little more focused on that
on the opponent. Uh, the you know, every day stays,
it stays the same in terms of practice and intensity
and uh, what you're trying to get out of each day.
But I think we're narrowing down on the you know
the details of what are opponents going to try to
do against us.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Having a lot of experience and getting seasons off to
good starts, the seasons like last year where we got
off to an own two starts. How much do you
share with some of the younger players the importance when
you have a first play schedule, the importance of a
fast start.
Speaker 9 (05:12):
Yeah, it's very important. You know, every game is so
important in this league. You don't have that many opportunities,
and it's very important to start off fast. And I
try to play from behind later on this season, and
that's what we intend to do.
Speaker 10 (05:24):
What's the going on at the end of practice with
you o Wine kind of hanging out, that's just us
doing extra drills, you know, extra individual work, working on
our technique and you know there's a lot to always
harness when you're playing online and try to get better
at so just have the guys out there doing extra drills.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Is that something that.
Speaker 7 (05:39):
You have kind of prompted that you've you've kind of
pulled guys into doing mat or is that something that
you guys kicked it collectively.
Speaker 9 (05:46):
Or you know, I just kind of like doing drills
and I would pull some of the young guys over
to give me a look or give me a you know,
something I needed, and other guys just started joining and
just became a thing. And now you know, everyone's kind
of getting drills now after practice.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
So you work a lot with Bullock after after practice?
Speaker 2 (06:02):
Did you was there something about him that you sort
of appreciated and you said, you know, this is somebody
I want to invest my time in.
Speaker 9 (06:09):
Corey. Yeah, No, Corey is a great player. I think
Corey is a tremendous player. He's gonna be a great
ad for us on the roster this year. And he's
gotten so much better over this offseason, stronger, smarter, more athletic,
and he just wants to learn the game and be
more technically sound. And you know, he's asked me a
lot of questions and I'm always here to help him.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Like watching his journey from undrafted to practice squad to
making the team and does it inspire some of the older,
more experienced.
Speaker 9 (06:35):
Guys on the team as well. Yeah, I mean it's
been an amazing journey for him, and especially for the type
of person.
Speaker 8 (06:40):
That he is.
Speaker 9 (06:41):
He's a great guy. He's a humble person, and he
works really hard and for someone to you know, be
able to continue his NFL career with that type of background,
I'm just very happy.
Speaker 5 (06:50):
For him for the very long time with everything that
happened in that quinnel up there. How how do you
think help what did you think this game gets for
him going back?
Speaker 8 (07:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (07:03):
I mean every game is going to be important to him.
I know the type of competitor Mark is, and you
know he's not gonna let one moment, you know one
you know bad thing happened to set him back. You know,
he's he's a true warrior. He's going to push forward
through those moments. And I know he's excited to prove
himself you know and everyone else that he's still that guy.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
For you, is they're getting the way that game went?
Is is there a feeling of say extra motivation, but
maybe a quiet intensity for you guys if you know,
if we need to, we need to kind of vanquish
that go there and get that offer our you know,
do what we didn't do the first time.
Speaker 9 (07:42):
Yeah, I mean for sure that team, you know, sent
us on out of the playoffs. So I don't think
it's just uh, you know, going into a normal game
per se. I think, you know, we're very unhappy with
the result last time we were there, and you know
a lot of us will give anything to leave there
with the dub.
Speaker 7 (07:58):
I mentioned the extra work that.
Speaker 6 (07:59):
You have to get in.
Speaker 7 (08:00):
Which idea was it to to start those like post
practice cashers during during training game?
Speaker 9 (08:05):
That was actually our coach hops idea, you know, just
wanted us to get some extra conditioning.
Speaker 6 (08:10):
Ronnie, how much do you.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Think this offensive line has progressed since last season? You
have a little bit more continuity going into this year.
Speaker 9 (08:18):
I think we progress a lot. I think especially this
time last year, we're dealing with a lot of issues,
a lot of details, and right now we're not seeing
those same issues. I think understanding the playbook and executing,
we're kind of really far ahead from where we're last year,
and now everything's more technical base and just working on that.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Next up we heard from defensive lineman Nomdi Metabka.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
A lot of.
Speaker 5 (08:45):
Starters from that game in the divisionals at of how
do you feel that that game full serve.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
As w adressful?
Speaker 8 (08:57):
It's gonna be a great motivation. It was the last
game that we played as a unit, so to go
back there and to play the the same team that
we lost to that we believe that we should have won.
We made themself inflicting uh mistakes. So everybody's fired, everybody's
pumped up, everybody's ready to go. But it's one day
at a time at this point.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
So yeah, it's something you guys discussed at all or
the mention of people is it? Is it something you
guys even like do you discuss it? You know, is
there like the ven fact or anything like that. Can
you guys talk about it? But it's a conversations, Yeah
it is.
Speaker 8 (09:34):
It's definitely a wanta you wanna get that bad taste
out of your mouth from the last game that we
played over there. So it gets everybody fired up and
ready to go, and UH gives us like a moti
a motivational factor, just to put it best for foreign practice.
Speaker 5 (09:47):
So.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
Building a team over course, that entire offseason.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
But now that we want is how the things change
when you get to this point.
Speaker 9 (09:55):
You know, everything's kind.
Speaker 8 (09:56):
Of looking at Oh yeah, just locking in all the
little things now, you know, camp is over with and
it's just about just uh, locking on the little things,
being on point and everything, cause now it really really counts.
So everybody just locking in, doing the little things right,
and it's getting in that that s in season routine.
You know, we have a camp routine. They have like
(10:16):
an ND season routine. You're clocking in different you're going
home at different times, so you have to adjust to
the nd season routines. So that's what we're doing right now.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
What do you talk to your team about the game.
Speaker 7 (10:27):
It's been discussing the new guys, I mean, is that
something to try to pass along with the guys that
weren't here a.
Speaker 8 (10:33):
Part of it last year at the end, Yeah, just
the mentality that we're going into there with, you know,
just locking in and just doing all that we can
do as as a team and uh just playing raven
football offense, defense, special teams and just getting that taste
out of the mouth. You know, definitely having that game
last year and and losing and going back to it
(10:54):
the first game of the season this year. You know,
it definitely gives us like a little bit more of
like exciding, a little bit of a uh uh of
a motivation still go out there and do what we
can do.
Speaker 6 (11:03):
Have you gone back and watched right, think?
Speaker 8 (11:04):
Cause I have what what was that like for? It's
not a good feeling. We lost just things that we
did good. There's things that we did bad, but the
bad overright, the good and that's what we lost. So
you know, it's definitely something that we're looking to and
we're we really wanna tighten the boats on that.
Speaker 10 (11:19):
So do you like the idea of starting in Buffalo
knowing where last season ended and knowing what you hope
to accomplish this here?
Speaker 1 (11:24):
Do you like the idea of getting that bad taste
out of your mouth we want and going.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
Right back there.
Speaker 8 (11:28):
I really it don't matter where we play for real, honestly,
but the fact that's in Buffalo and that was the
last team that we played and that's the last place
that we played, you know, it gives us more extra motivation,
you know, to get that taste out of our mouth.
You know, the last time that we were here we lost,
so we wanted to change that by executing practice and
taking one day at the time.
Speaker 5 (11:44):
How important is.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
It to start fast is overlab but you questioning what
you want to.
Speaker 8 (11:48):
Do, It's huge. Setting the tone. Starting fast sets a
tone for the whole not only the defense but for
the whole team as well. Starting fast and finishing and strong,
that's what we're all about. So start some practice, though,
starts with everybody being locked in on the game plan.
Trust and ze O be in your spot and doing
your one to eleven or Mark Washington.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Said that as a defensive line he didn't like how
you guys played in that game. I fuss for you
guys from that game heading into this one.
Speaker 8 (12:14):
Stopping the run. You know, they have some good backs,
backs that really shifty, making them one dimensional, making the
QB very uncomfortable. You know, when he's very, very uncomfortable,
he starts to do things that you know are unorthodox
of him. So we're gonna put him in in spots
that are very very tight, spots that are very uncomfortable,
so we can capitalize those opportunities.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Marlin has talked about feeling like the defense isn't his
fear as he thinks it should be. Is that is
that a thought that's shared by other defensive leaders, Like
have you guys talked about that as a group, like
trying to bring that back ers? What's your take on that?
Speaker 8 (12:49):
I saw I saw something online about that. You know,
it wasn't something that we talked about on the defensive group.
That's how Marlin feels, That's how we said it. I
feel like, you know, we have the right guys this
team on the defense, offense, there everybody to take it
all the way to the top end. You know, it
just starts in practice and it starts in just winning
games every every week. So you know, that's how he feels.
(13:10):
And you know, I I I believe in the guys
in this, in this team, in the in this in
this locker room, and I'm all about my guys and
uh and what they can do. So and be watching
you guys.
Speaker 4 (13:19):
Pretty much every day.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Something kind of there's the emphasis one takeaways to get
created turnovers. I mean, how how much what point of
hampis does do you feel going to this team not
only getting to Josh Allen, which is a kind of typical,
but also maybe getting the ball away, stripping it all
getting something else happening.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
It's huge.
Speaker 8 (13:36):
It's huge when you take the way, when you take
the ball away from the offense. You know, you know,
when you win the the turn off for bottles, you're
more likely to win the game. So, you know, I
feel like the last time we went out there, they
won the t over battle. I think, Uh we had
zero turnovers and they had three. I believe so, and
it was still a tight game. So just imagine we
even had the same amount of takeaways as they did.
You know, just if you really put the math, you
(13:57):
know what I mean. So I think that, you know,
make it emphasis and making turnovers in practice and then
translated into the game is gonna make us win games
for sure.
Speaker 6 (14:07):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (14:07):
A lot of people see that Buffalo offensive line as
being one of the best in the NFL. I know
you haven't played this year's version, but give any thoughts
on their quality and like whether this is kind of
a measuring stick game for what's your difference of line
could could be up against the life back Caliver.
Speaker 8 (14:22):
Yeah, they have a a good online you know, I
think they have all the guys that they had last year.
It's give me a good tests for us, you know,
we are watching the film that we did last year
and just things that that work, things that didn't work,
you know, ways that we can uh scheme them up.
And that's why we're doing now in practice. So we're
all excited about it. Well, we're all fired up to
(14:44):
to get ready to go. It's like reving a car up,
you know what I'm saying. You're getting an engine going,
but it's not takeoff time yet, you know what I mean.
So you just have to be patient and just stay
rev and stay stay practices and stay sharp. You're ready
to play.
