Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to the Ravens Press Pass podcast. The Ravens approved
a seven and seven on the season after a twenty
four to nothing victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on a
Sunday Today. We had a chance to hear from head
coach John Harbaugh during his Monday afternoon press conference.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Okay, good see, everybody really appreciate you being here. We're
excited about the upcoming challenge, and Sunday night football in
Baltimore is always always something to get get up for,
so we're looking forward to it. Just a very very
worthy and good opponent eleven and three team obviously fighting
for the number one seed, so but we're fighting for
(00:41):
what we're fighting for as well. So the opportunity to
play a very meaningful game late in December is is
well earned in this league. So we're ready and we'll
be preparing all week for that challenge. We questions you have, John,
Do you have an update with Teddy Beganan, Yeah, he
is an a c L. He'll be out for the
rest of the year.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Teddy is someone who has improved a lot of from
just bringing him now playing roughly seventy or snaps the league.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
How do you feel the way as part of what
he was able to do.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, Teddy did a great job, you know, just to
see his progress, you know, see him grow as a player. Uh,
defense and special teams has just been really fun. I mean,
nobody's into it more than he is. You know, he's uh,
he's just great and he's going to be back next year,
should be back hopefully for training camp, ready to go
and ready to kind of build on what he's done.
So Uh, it's an unfortunate disappointing. It will be ah
(01:42):
be part of his story you know going forward obviously,
but uh, you know, Trent Simpson will take that role.
Trent had a really good game, played well, has been
practicing great, and every time he's been playing, he's been
playing well too. So expect you know, Trent to come
in there and just build on what what Teddy's been doing,
you know, so far, and also what Trent's been doing,
what have you.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Seen from training in terms of you know, improvements and
progress and so forth to kind of step back into
that role. And secondly, how much does you know, you know,
move Kyle Hamilton around help as well?
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, I mean it doesn't really affect Kyle. It's Trent
plays a will linebacker spot in certain personnel groups. And
I think he's done really well. You know, like I said,
he's played, he's played great. He played good against the run,
played good against the pass, the reps he's had, you know,
really not worried about it at all, John.
Speaker 5 (02:35):
Just from a bigger picture scale for Darius Washington to
get back instead of months when the Gillie's there play
in a huge game that you guys needed to win.
How did you think he came through? And I think
he played about fifties and apps and how meaningful was
it he even c you Mayer hit there knowing how
much he cares.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Yeah, that's actually right, absolutely how I saw. I was
excited for him. He and I had a conversation on
the sideline sometime in the third quarter just about that
very thing, you know, and how meaningful and how cool
it was that he was out there playing and he's
playing really well and flying around making tackles, you know,
doing what Ad does. I just always have loved the
way he plays. So it's a big boost for us.
(03:15):
You know, it gives us another playmaker on defense, another
high energy guy. I fly around and do what he does.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
There was a lot made about read visiting the facility
last week. I don't know how much inspiration he provided.
I think it was after each book Marlin had said
something about Ed commented on the junk food and the
meeting rooms or something like that. I thought you had
changed the whole health kick around here.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Is that a question or what? I'm please? You know,
elaborate on the question too, about with the junk food.
And I have no idea what you're talking about. I
have no idea what you're talking about. There's there's snacks
around here and there. I mean, yeah, whatever you got junk,
you got snacks in your in your house. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (04:04):
I don't play in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
I have a lot of junk for a lot.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
And I can tell I jumped too. I just Snickers
bar today already. It was great post lunch, like a
dessert kind of. It was amazing.
Speaker 6 (04:19):
It's just something that stuck out afterwards about the impact
that that had had colding the meeting rooms and stuff.
And that's that didn't cut your attention?
Speaker 2 (04:28):
I did not.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
What what did What do you think late you know whatever?
Twenty four hours now removed from that game, What do
you think of the impact of it being here and
just having a guy like.
Speaker 7 (04:41):
That I talk to these guys, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, probably, I mean no, probably direct correlation, you know,
just just another adding to the kind of the chemistry
kind of you know, it's a it's a reinforcement probably
more than anything. It's you know, he guys did guys
watch We watch tape of that a lot, you know,
and all those guys. You know, it's kind of something
that Zach leans into and from a tradition standpoint, and
(05:05):
it's really the system hasn't changed. It's the same same
basic system. Of course, you know, everything evolves, but you'll
see those guys running a lot of the same defensive
calls that the guys are running now. You know. So
you get a chance to watch Ed do it, or
or all Ray do it, you know, Hellodi and Jared Johnson.
You know, you get a chance to watch all those
all those great players do what they do thro all
Suggs man, you just keep naming them, you know. It's
(05:26):
it's just incredible. So for ready to come back and
for those guys to get a chance to talk to him,
I saw him. The thing I loved about it more
than anything, I think the talks were great, But the
one on ones I saw him on the sideline during
practice one on wan ing with numerous guys. You know,
Malachi was over there just soaking it in. I'm sure
he had a bunch of great questions. You know. That's
probably the coolest part of it and probably really truly
(05:47):
the most impactful part of it. I would say it's.
Speaker 4 (05:52):
Relating to that.
Speaker 8 (05:54):
You know, Draymond really I mean, obviously average in the game,
it really seemed to bring lot of attitude to the field,
you know, going back and forth of the bangs a
little bit.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
What kind of factor do.
Speaker 8 (06:08):
You think he can bring in sort of the nastiness
of his defense.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
I think he's a really good player physical, Uh you know,
you get him on the edge in the pass rush
like that. Uh, that was that was help to us too,
you know. Uh. T Rob coming in was I think
had a big impact on that because he was able
to go inside, so he hit both those guys out
there at the same time number of times too heavy
handed pass rushers. That's the biggest impact. I mean, our
(06:32):
defensive personality has always been what it is, so he
fits it really well. It's kind of why we wanted him.
You know, that's why we were excited. One of the
reasons we're excited to have him. But he's a he's
a good football player. You know, he plays really hard
and tough and and uh he's got good balance and
you know, when he's rushing Stan, his feet give give
you the best chance to wrap up a quarterback like
Burrow who's tough to get down. The fact that he
(06:54):
didn't really have too many He had one play where
he got out and you know, hit hit Chase on
the crosser. It was a simulated pressure that we had.
We probably should have kept him in there on that one,
you know, but when guys can stay on their feet
and like t Rob, you know, when he got the
free runner, you know, he didn't miss it, he made it.
Those are the plays that really ended up being the difference,
you know, I think in getting quarterback pressures and sacks
(07:16):
and things like that.
Speaker 6 (07:18):
I apologize that this was broad yesterday, but a lot
it was mentioned by Marlon and others.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Did the Friday practice.
Speaker 6 (07:24):
Was more intense than usually.
Speaker 7 (07:25):
He was sore than usual.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
Is that true?
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Is that a.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Conscious eye it's true? Or now? We practiced great every
we had our best. We had our most efficient practice,
probably three practices last week. I told the guys that
I thought they were the three best practices we had
it toil them on Saturday morning. No, no, no, no, no, no.
We practiced hard all the time. That's how we do it.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
You're going to be focused on preparation with the Patriots night,
with the Steelers playing also tonight, and much attention.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
To go to that game.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
While you're looking at the Patriots.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Of course, of course, you know, looking at with great
interest of course, where you have to you know, it's
uh uh, it's it's part of the fun of this
whole thing, you know. It's it's it's exciting to watch
these games. You know. It's a bottom line is we
got to take care of our business. You know, we
understand that. So that sitting there on pins of needles,
you know, you just assume that you got to take
(08:17):
care of your business. It would be it would be
a stretch for us not to have to win out.
So we'll plan on that and that's what we're gonna
have to try to do. John, you have an update
on the cheetos, but uh yeah, well no more. As
a week goes on, it's not not like a It's
not like a blizz frank or anything like that. Uh
just got did you see the play if you see it,
(08:37):
if you see it, and maybe you'll see it on TV.
But he was covering that steam route by Gasiki and
uh did a great job on the play. But uh,
then he's finishing up, you guys, foot caught in that
in the netting. It was kind of laying on the
ground underneath it, you know, the field goal back back netting,
so got caught up in that. It kind of kind
of grabs his foot a little bit. So we'll see
(09:00):
how it goes as the week goes on.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
I'm certain some of it is just kind of like
the way the game played down and such. But you
guys have talked about and I guess you were efficient
when you look at the yard of the play only
the forty one offensive plays yesterday, and I think you
guys are averaging fifty seven for the year. What would
you like to see to just get more plays offensively
(09:24):
from week to week.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Well, you got to you know, convert on third down
and the stay in the field. You got to not
turn the ball over, stand in the field. Sten drives
things like that. Uh, that's that's really the bottom line.
You know, we've had we've we've taken ourselves. We took
ourselves off the field more than anything probably, But you know,
they made a couple of nice plays. They had a
we had a really nice little play action lined up there,
(09:47):
uh fifty yard line in like the third quarter and
double move after we'd run the ball really well and
they just covered it really well, I mean, and then
they got pressure on us, you know, they they just
had a couple of really good rushes right at that time.
Then we took a sat and then we're trying to
really really trying to push it back and get the
first time getting the field goal range and end up
taking getting two more sacks because you know, we're trying
to make a play there. So you know, you're really
(10:09):
not you want Lamar to be aggressive there and try
to find a way because he can do it. In
the worst case series you have to punt. So but
that got us off the field, for instance. So it's
just those kinds of things. We had a boot, we
were running the ball well, we had a boot boot
to the second play of a drive in the first
quarter that just you know, he ran right up field
on it. You know, it made a great play. So
those are the things that just you get behind the change.
(10:29):
I think the marshat yesterday, you know he calls a
GBO t or get back on track. Those are long
yards when you're behind the change type of situations, and
those are the ones that really have caused us trouble,
you know, and like any team, like any offense, so
you try to stay out of those as much as
you can. But you want to be aggressive with the
play action, the boots and things like that when you're
running the ball. So I'd like us to just be
(10:51):
you know, find a way to stay in the field more.
I mean part of that is the defense scores in
the fourth quarter, you know, for just being honest about it,
the defense scores and back in the field, and those
were those were those a book that was bookended by
two long Bengals drives. You know, they had the long
drive all the way down to the red zone, we
get to touchdown on defense. Then they decided that they're
going to try to run the game out at that
(11:12):
point instead of going two minutes or anything like that,
and it had another kind of long drive, you know,
So then we got them stopped on fourth down, so
that offense was not even on the field fourth down
except for basically two plays. We got the first down,
then it was victory. That was our fourth quarter. So
uh but still, you know, maybe what it would have
been fifty to fifty five plays if it had been normal,
(11:33):
you still want more than that. So it just comes
down to us keep extending the drives and and just
execute just as well as we can score as many
points as we can. John will play Lamar ex backed
into the play that led.
Speaker 8 (11:48):
Through the Ragini touchdown pass, and it really very as well.
Is that assign to you that Sperverrghini's confidence of the
last scream engine, you know, really the same with him
and the offense is is just looking better Evercingly.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Yeah, I don't look for signs that way. It's not
where I think about it, honestly. I mean I was
I think I always I just were always chasing those
kind of plays, you know, And I think we had
twenty five percent of our You mentioned the low number
of plays, but twenty five percent of the more explosives,
you know, that's pretty amazing. Uh So that was one
of them, you know, and we we were we did
have some big runs and some big passes some you know,
(12:31):
Zay made crazy catch in the two minute drive, Mark
me another crazy catch in the two minute drive. I mean,
those are the things we're capable of. So more than anything,
to me, it's just going to kind of keep extending.
So the big plays probably another reason why maybe, But
you don't want to have to be an offense it
has to go, you know, three yards and a cloud
of dust all the way down the field. Either you
have to make big plays to do it. We just
(12:51):
I'd like to just be able to extend drives, you know,
as much as anything. That's really the biggest thing.
Speaker 9 (12:54):
So John along the fire. I know it's like the
last year it wasn't a big part of your.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
Game, man, But the r P O that Lamar hit
he hot you guys, just like just.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
The emphasized RPOs in general from last year.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
This year we have not. We have not. We've we've
been running turn and Runnie get out of the game, okay,
I know, yeah, he will see. He got sore. He's
sore like a lot of guys. Man. You know, you
hear three three weeks lefters, different little things. You know.
He's another guy that we'll be looking at the course
of the week. See where it's at.
Speaker 4 (13:34):
You already said the Patriots are very worthy opponent when
you start to look at Drake May and the problems
that he presents.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
One of the tough things littlest big plays, I think
is the biggest thing. When you look at their offense,
you know they've just had a bunch of big plays.
I mean, run, big runs. Got a rookie running back
that's you know, fast and explosive, but you better have
your angle set up on him, and you know they're
physical obviously. Then you know, May's made some nice throws
and he runs. You know sometimes he runs around, but
(14:04):
he's made some big throws and play actions and things
like that. So kind of a big playoffense that can
run the ball, you know, that's that's a combination that
you have to be concerned about.
Speaker 6 (14:17):
See if you're gonna end up playing now, I mean
it's forecasting, but three night games. Have you commented on
the fact that you're playing at night in Green Bay?
Just played in the coldest game in Raven's history. But
that might pass that, I guess in a couple of weeks.
But coming up with Sunday night, then you're at Green
Bay and then if things go right, that that game
also has the potential bad the season at night.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
M h Have you thought about that? Not really. Whenever
we play, will be there, you know, we play when
they tell us. Our guys like playing at night, you know,
looking forward to whatever, whatever. Whenever they tell us to play,
we'll be ready to go. We're excited about it.
Speaker 8 (14:56):
I was.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
I mean, I'm I'm surprised. He was the coldest game
ever is. I thought the green Bay game, what year
was it when we played up there? I'm thinking that
one later seventeen that was cold. I remember that was
really cold. And then the Denver game, I mean that
was man. You know that the clothes must be better
(15:17):
now because I felt I felt good. I had some
good stuff, although my my wife did some shopping for me,
so it wasn't strictly I apologize the Nike, you know,
I know, you guys are amazing. Chalk that up in
the you know, the record books there marketing underneath. It
wasn't Nike. It wasn't Nike. It was it was like
this the wool hunting stuff, you know. I mean, I
(15:38):
guess some amazing it's amazing stuff. Now so bad? Yeah,
Pa pack heavily.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Did you feel like it affected anything in the game, like,
I mean, any any of them? I mean the balls
that weren't caught. Did you think the cold had anything.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
To do with that? Or I don't know, Probably better
to ask the players, you know. I mean I didn't
have to catch any passes or tackle or blocks, so
you know, I was I was fine, But the players
are the ones that have to do it. I thought
I would say this. I mean, just watching the game,
I thought our guys handle it great. I mean, I
don't think our guys had any issue at all. I
don't think our guys even thought it was that cold
out there. You know, they were they were out there
(16:13):
getting after it, and you know, I was on the
sideline screaming, it's not even cold out here. You know,
where's the gold? You know, maybe just because they had
good gear. I don't know, but the the guys, the
guys didn't even bat an eye. It wasn't even conversation
at all. They were they were locked into the game.
It was business. They were having fun. They were flying around,
they were hitting people, they were blocking people, they were
(16:35):
running the ball hard. You know, I liked what I saw,
you know, and I like the way we're playing. I
love our guys. I love I love the way they compete.
I love the way they stick together.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
They don't let the outside buzz, you know, bother them
at all. They DON'TY don't really care about the you know,
the silly the silly things that people worry about. They
they get locked in on what they have to do,
and they play their best football that they're capable of
playing that day, you know. And and it's you know,
you know, you chase perfection. We say perfection is attainable.
You know, you can say it. Read your Bible says
(17:06):
you can be perfect. You know, in any given circumstance,
we could run the perfect play. And you know what,
there was one play out there, that flip sweep over
to the right to Derrick Henry. That was literally the
perfect play. Every single guy did the perfect job on
that play. I mean, it was a beautiful play. So
so you can't achieve perfection, you know, so you might
as well chase it. And that's that's what I appreciate
(17:27):
about our guys. I just gonna drop the mic on that.
When I was ready to get up and go, you know,
I mean who you know not to be a doubt.
You know, I appreciate that the elite in though.
Speaker 9 (17:44):
Team like the up to you to play at home
under the LAFE. But some guys have expressed frustration that
this team at home this year is only three or
five obviously your last record season home game just talked
to the kind of various of the season. Is a
point of frustration that you guys are under you at home?
Speaker 2 (18:04):
No, no, I mean you know, I don't. I don't
even know what you're talking about, you know, point of
frustration though guys are locked in for the next game.
That's it, period, Okay, right, I mean I mean seasons,
seasons go the way they go. You know, you fight
the way they fight, you know, I know, I know
there's a lot of You can look back all you
(18:24):
want and say, well this happened to that happened, or
where do we stand right now? You can do that
all you want. You know, what's that going to do
for you? You know, what's where's it going to take
you? You got to look forward, and I look back with
a lot of pride. You know, everyone every game we've lost,
our guys were fighting like crazy to win it, you know.
So no, there's no frustration. I mean to me, that's
made up. You know. Yeah, the guys are disappointed. They
want to win games. But you look at every one
(18:45):
of those games. The Houston game probably our worst home
game ever, right that I can ever remember. Our guys
were fighting their butts off the guys that were out
there playing who was playing in the game? Right? That was?
That was? That game is what it was. You know.
The Rams game is what it was. Guys are fighting
their butts off in that game too. So those games
are history. You know, there's no frustration, there's just opportunity,
and that's what our guys are looking at. We'll drop
(19:07):
the mic on that.
Speaker 7 (19:08):
