Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Pass Podcast. The Ravens fell
to the Detroit Lions thirty eight to thirty on Monday
Night football. There's a tough loss for the team as
Ravens are now one and two on the season. After
the game, we had a chance to hear from head
coach John Harball.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Okay, hard fought game. Hats off to the Lions. They
did the things they needed to do to win the game,
and our guys fought, but we didn't do the things
we need to do to win the game. We got
some things we need to get better at. Things we're
going to be disappointed in when we watched that tape.
Things we got to get better at. Our focus right
now has got to be toward towards Kansas City, and

(00:41):
that's what we're gonna do. We get ready for that
game and get ready to go play it. Well, question, Jeff, John,
I know you have a much more detail answer when
you watched the film, but just out there watching the
run defense, what do you think was the biggest problem? Well,
I mean, yeah, I don't I'm not gonna be able
to give you the biggest problem. I just the biggest
problem is we didn't play good run defense. I mean
we didn't as a as a defense complete. We didn't

(01:02):
do it, and that that's not gonna be good enough.
There's nobody in that locker room that thinks that's good enough.
That's disappointing, that's bad run defense, and that's not who
we are. It cannot be who we are. It's just
it's not gonna be good enough. It's not gonna be acceptable,
and it's got to be better.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
John, specifically, how you feel like the apptences of Namdi
and Kyle.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
I don't really have those measurements right now. You know,
it's hard to measure that at this point. Uh, but
you play with the guys that are out there, and
the guys that are out there are good enough to
do it. We his coaches got to figure it out
and we got to get it get it done.

Speaker 4 (01:37):
Do you have any update on Nambi's health?

Speaker 2 (01:39):
I do not.

Speaker 5 (01:41):
Jim, what do you think they were doing on Lamar?
Was it a spy situation that was giving you guys
some problems offensively or uh?

Speaker 2 (01:51):
You know, I don't think you could just put it
in one category. I mean, we we threw the ball
pretty good, and we we Lamar made some extended plays,
he made some on throws and you know, trying to
move around in the pocket and make some plays. They
got to spend some sacks when you're trying to throw
the ball like that at the end of the game too.
So I'm not sure what your question is really, but uh,
they played good defense, you know, and we were competing

(02:12):
on offense. You know, we didn't run the ball as
well as you wanted to either that that had a
lot to do with it. I think, uh, I'd like
to see us run the ball better week.

Speaker 6 (02:20):
You know, you guys were pretty physical. It seemed like
this week lines were pretty physical with both and both
lines defensive and offensive. Did you did you feel like
they were just more physical up front there?

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Yeah, I'm not really putting words in terms on it.
I just think we can play better than we did,
for sure, and we need to play better than we did.

Speaker 7 (02:39):
Derek hen we've been able to take care of the
ball to all his career to this point. This year
pumpman has been an issue.

Speaker 8 (02:44):
I mean, what do you even say to him considering
this hasn't been the normal board.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Yeah, it hasn't been, And uh, I don't I don't
think it'll be going forward, but we got to get
it fixed. I mean, that was that was kind of
a blind shot there. I thought he had the ball
in good position, you know, I thought the defender got
a good look at it though, because it was kind
of a retrace cutback play. So a little bit of
perfect storm. But still, I mean, we just want to
protect the football, you know, all our guys do, and

(03:10):
we gotta we gotta do it. We gotta be good
at it.

Speaker 5 (03:12):
Didn't send some night, We didn't staff off tonight.

Speaker 6 (03:16):
Over the course of nine pressures, the pass.

Speaker 9 (03:19):
Rush, especially building and critical thurndowns, it didn't really seem
to alter as the pocket, which is how much did
you wish that you maybe did you try to send
more pass rush, more blitzers and the annoy and Mattie
Kay's absent much.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Yeah, we'll go back and look at the number, you know,
the calls, and we sent some number five man rushes.
We had a couple of six man rushes. We got
to get better pass rush. I mean, there's no doubt
about it. I mean, to your point, you know that's
that's not gonna be good enough. Ever, so we got
to figure out we gotta have an answer for that.

Speaker 7 (03:51):
Do you think back over the years, can there be
a value in a loss like this that sort of
forces you to confirm a lot of things about what
you're doing.

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Yeah, I mean that's always life. We've we've had conversation here,
But right now, I think we just got to get
We gotta go to work on the things we need
to get better at and get ready to play Kansas City.
You know, we got Kansas City. Then we got a
tough team, and we got a tough team, and we've
got a tough team coming up. So the next tough
team is Kansas City. We just played a tough team.
That's a good football team. We just played. Okay, so
we go to work on the next tough team we're

(04:19):
gonna play and try to find a way to get
that win. And that's what we're gonna do and keep
it simple, lock in on that and go to work.

Speaker 6 (04:26):
How consider you with some of the goal to go situations,
I mean, third drive in the first half, you guys
are at the one yard line and third down, then
I mean is it play calling?

Speaker 2 (04:34):
I mean, just what did what.

Speaker 5 (04:36):
Did you Well?

Speaker 2 (04:36):
I'm gonna see the tape and if it for what
it was, I don't know, you know until I see
the tape. Try to put the ball on the end zone,
you know, as we're trying to do that. For sure,
we didn't get it done in that one particular drive.
I appreciate the fact that our you know, our defense
got got to stop, get the ball back and score
on the next drive. So that was good. But you

(04:57):
want to score when you're at the one yard line,
that's for sure, John, will you on it?

Speaker 3 (05:00):
With about four and a half in the left was
it was there any consideration for going forward or was
there a gyarden special?

Speaker 2 (05:06):
Yeah? That was fourth and what it is?

Speaker 5 (05:08):
Fourth and I don't know.

Speaker 6 (05:10):
Oh, it wasn't that much.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Yeah, it's pretty.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Far, John, given how well they were running the ball
on the on their fourth.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
Into their do you think they call you by surprise
on that?

Speaker 2 (05:21):
I don't think it caused by surprise, but I you know,
we we uh, we can certainly play that, but you're
trying to it's a great it's a good play call.
It's not surprising call at all. We were talking about
it in the huddle. I think they executed well on it.
We can certainly play it better and that's kind of
what that's kind of what we got to do. I mean,
we got to learn from those things and get better
at them and and and carry it forward.

Speaker 10 (05:41):
Two more, Joe, Are you concerned how much pressure they
were getting with four at times?

Speaker 2 (05:47):
I am, But I also understand kind of how we play,
and I just think Lamar's doing you know, he makes
so many plays, makes so many things happen, So you know,
I like that part of it too. I don't want
to be in desperate situations at the end of the game.
You know, that's not what we're trying to do. But
we're in we're in those situations. We can go score.
You saw it. We can go score. We make plays
because of our quarterback, you know, and and uh so

(06:09):
we're gonna We're gonna do that. But do I want
to do everything better? Absolutely, That's one of the things.
All the things you guys are talking about are all
things that we're gonna look at and and uh we
gotta play better in those areas. Next week, all.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
Right, thanks, Next we heard from quarterback Lamar Jackson, you.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Know, one and two after right now, after three weeks,
how how big behold.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
Do you think it is?

Speaker 9 (06:35):
Or do you not even think that's much as all
hope for this team?

Speaker 11 (06:38):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (06:38):
I feel like the way uh we performed with the
whole like, uh huge hole. But you know it's still
the beginning of the season. You got a lot of
work to do, a lot of work to do, and
you just got to execute.

Speaker 9 (06:51):
Why this is I think there were sex seven times
tonight that rarely rarely happens with you. What what were
you seeing back there that was causing problems?

Speaker 11 (07:00):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Ma'am.

Speaker 8 (07:00):
Gods are doing stunts and they had a uh a
spy and uh sometimes the spy was M. They was
grabbing the l my leg and M. That's just what
it was, you know, guys, was they were dropping the coverage.
You got three safeties back there, and I'm just not
gonna throw a hair merry ball, you know, I'm gonna
read the coverage out and then try to make something happen.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
Were you s You've seen spies a lot over your career,
A lot of you done that.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Did the Lions do something that was a little bit
different from what other teams had done.

Speaker 10 (07:29):
In the pass?

Speaker 11 (07:30):
Nah?

Speaker 10 (07:30):
They was just executing, you know, that's all it was.
He's just executed.

Speaker 6 (07:37):
Mark what did you just walk us through? Maybe that sequence?
You know, you you got just have a ball down
on the one yard line thereck gets you know, stopped
a couple of times and then the sack obviously just
a difficulty of not converting those type of situations, and
and uh, you know what kind of went wrong now.

Speaker 8 (07:59):
T ah sh I can't tell you what went wrong,
you know, Uh, we just didn't score. And that's rarely
that that really happened, you know. And I feel like
we just gotta put points on the board right there
in that situation. Uh, we on the one yard line,
we rap down the end zone. I feel like we
got a punching find a way to punching more.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
I know, every time you touch the ball, you wanna
s you wanna score.

Speaker 9 (08:19):
Yeah, So when you see the other team having their
success and the long drives, do you feel that puts
even more pressure on the offense to.

Speaker 4 (08:26):
Score at all?

Speaker 8 (08:28):
Uh? I, Like you said, every every time we wanna feel,
I feel like we should score. So I I feel
like that's just pressure regardless. You know, that's our job
to put points on the board. I'm just I'm not
looking at the other team. You know, probably look at
the time of possession, like, okay, we gotta put points
on a hair on the board here, or nah, I
don't feel like we should have been panic mode or
nothing like that. You know, just do the same thing
when we get our opportunity, dry the ball down to

(08:48):
feel like we always do.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Put points on the board.

Speaker 8 (08:50):
But at the same time, we were scoring pretty fast
sometimes and those guys with milk and the clock, so
in a way we had to hurry up.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Mar do you feel like erics on ball fourthcorter? Was
it a pre keep play in the game and we
saw him on the sideline really upset.

Speaker 9 (09:05):
I mean, what do you.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Said him after that play and that sequence and what's
the team's faith in.

Speaker 10 (09:11):
And just dif right now? I don't let it go.

Speaker 8 (09:13):
You know, we had like six minutes and a half
left in the game, you know when that situation happened,
and our defense did a great job, you know, stopping
those guys, and we just gotta find a way to
drive the ball down the field of score, you know
right away, cause we were still in the game. It
wasn't like it was a blow out or nothing like that.

Speaker 7 (09:28):
Mard, do you see this as a weeke up call
or a shock to the system or whatever you wanna
call it for the entire team, and how do you
expect everybody to respond?

Speaker 11 (09:36):
This week?

Speaker 8 (09:36):
Feel like Week one was a week up call, you know,
not just this last week one was a wake up call.
Last week was a wake up call, you know, cause
we started off slow, uh last week and you know
we we got a We got beat tonight. Oh Lions
had they had a great game planning. I feel like
office and defense for those guys play great. We just
gotta find a way to win.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Next up, we heard from safety Kyle Hamilton after.

Speaker 7 (10:00):
Where you allowed to some of your crushing and a
couple of really long drives. Kind of where do you
feel the the the state.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
Of the defense is right now?

Speaker 12 (10:09):
Uh, definitely not where we wanted to be. No excuses
can be made at this point. If it's if it's
not one thing, it's another and we just got It's
kind of like we just gotta patch everything up right now?

Speaker 5 (10:26):
Can uh just take it? Take it for granted.

Speaker 12 (10:28):
Our run defense, it's been pretty good the whole time
I've been here, But when a team runs a ball
like that just demoralizes you more than passing the ball.
It's it's the challenging you mentally physically, so it's it's
on us as a defense just to put that fire
out asap, and we didn't do that.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
You've you've said challenges you physically, and physicality is you know,
consistently a hallmark of the raisings defense of our generations.
You know, seemed like the Lions offense really had more
physicality than your defense today. You know, where do you
kind of see as the areas where that can be improved.

Speaker 4 (11:08):
In a week?

Speaker 12 (11:10):
Yeah, I mean I wouldn't say that. I mean maybe
a few plays here and there and not making excuses.
I mean, those few plays wouldn't lose the game. So
we got to be we gotta do it one hundred
percent of the time. But I don't think it's anything
that we have to We're not trying to reinvent the wheel.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
You just got to go play football.

Speaker 12 (11:32):
It's probably not a good answer, but you know, it's
it's running and it's hitting, and we got to run
and hit better.

Speaker 7 (11:38):
Obviously, you guys are without Nomde and without how they
and Lloyd, you.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
Can't exactly summarize how big a loss that is.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
But how tough was it without them.

Speaker 5 (11:47):
On the field at y play.

Speaker 12 (11:49):
I mean, I have to watch the film, but I
mean we're blessed to have guys who can make plays.

Speaker 5 (11:54):
Pro Bowl all Pro guys all over the field, and.

Speaker 12 (11:59):
Shame on us if we if we need a a
Pro Bowl guy to play good defense. I think we're
We have a plethora of guys who who have accolades,
but there's teams in the league that don't have that
that play good defense. So obviously, to your point, it
hurts not having those two guys, but we have guys

(12:19):
in the room ample amount of talent to make up
for that at all three levels. So I don't think
it's as much a personnel thing as it is just
a run and hitting thing.

Speaker 7 (12:30):
From your vantage, why were there inside runs as effective
as they were? I mean, you guys did a pretty
good job on Gibbs on the outside, But why why
were they so good?

Speaker 5 (12:39):
Yeah? Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 12 (12:41):
I could have done a lot better on some of
the receiver inserts and stuff like that. You know, the ball,
those those runs hit downhill. The fastest obviously hit running
the inside, and when you run it outside, we've guys
with speed that can run it down but like I said,
we've gotta be more physical at the point of attack,
and me included me primarily. I think I could have

(13:02):
done a lot better doing that. So again, I don't
think the sky is falling. But we got a big
one next week on a short week, so it's up
to us to be professionals go out and get a win.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
Kind I think someone charged you guys with twenty missed
tackles tonight. I mean, how out of character is that
for it for you guys, and you're.

Speaker 12 (13:21):
So watching with the fundamentals is with Yeah, that was
that was really disheartening because that was one of the
things coming to the game.

Speaker 5 (13:26):
We wanted to.

Speaker 12 (13:29):
Leave the game feeling good about tackling. And I can
definitely say that we do not. I mean, I don't
speak for everybody when I say this, but I do
not feel like we tackle well, me included. And but
I mean, like I said, it's nothing that is.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
I think the hard part is covered. I think we
have the people to do.

Speaker 12 (13:50):
It's the quote unquote easy part of just doing the
right things the right way, and it's small things, but
they've become sixty yards and then four minute thirty yard
touchdown runs. And you know, I don't even think there's
much to be said. We just got to do better.

Speaker 1 (14:10):
In the locker room, we heard from a handful of guys,
including cornerback n Humphrey.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Something that or was there a certain saw it defensively
that allowed the lines for ustriving especially in third downs.

Speaker 10 (14:23):
Yeah, I think that was That was kind of the
the moral of the story.

Speaker 13 (14:27):
I feel like we were getting some in them in
third downs and they just executed better than we executed.

Speaker 10 (14:34):
I think.

Speaker 13 (14:36):
You know, usually you know after a loss, even after
you know, when when things don't go well, you you
kind of have a pretty decent idea of kind of
what went wrong. And you know, amongst the conversations I've
had with the guys, it's on defense at least.

Speaker 10 (14:51):
It just h I don't know, we really don't.

Speaker 13 (14:56):
I know, we're we're not gonna win many games with
giving up the many points Z zero turnovers.

Speaker 10 (15:01):
But as far as the answer to it, I I
don't really have one.

Speaker 5 (15:07):
Would you say you didn't know?

Speaker 10 (15:09):
Is that just come down to execution or.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
Did you feel like it was with something game plan
wise Detroit.

Speaker 10 (15:13):
Was doing that that confused your guys. No, I wouldn't.

Speaker 13 (15:16):
I I I wouldn't really say there was you know, confusion.
They they you know, they had a couple wrinkles that
I that I think we didn't see, you know, that
had a double move or touchdown on me insert on
that key four down pass that I gave up. But no,
I think, uh, they just I really just think they
just executed better, a little better than us tonight.

Speaker 8 (15:37):
Do you think the lack of a past rush put
a strain on the guys.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
In the back yend?

Speaker 13 (15:43):
No, I mean I think it's I think it's very
challenging when you lose, you know, justin Metabe Gay convent Noy.
I think the guys stepped up well. But I think
you know, Detroit's got a really good old line and
the the four man rush, I.

Speaker 10 (15:59):
Think it's it's hard to get there.

Speaker 13 (16:00):
I I I felt like we could have covered just
for a second longer, and a lot of times we
would have been right there to sack Golf. So that's
kind of a That's one of those things where you know,
the secondary's gotta help the the front to be able
to get there in time, and the the front we
you know, we expect them to help us.

Speaker 10 (16:15):
To have those bad passes to help us in the
back end.

Speaker 13 (16:18):
So it just kind of was a the victim of
just rushing coverage not working together. But I feel like
it was it was very close to night, but uh
closest isn't good enough.

Speaker 7 (16:28):
Marlo whatere do.

Speaker 6 (16:29):
You think of the team to find some consistency.

Speaker 13 (16:32):
Even I I think, honestly, I think turnovers. I I
just don't. I that that's kind of what we preach
the off season. It's what we preached really every every week,
every day. So I it's it's pretty simple. I think
you just not gonna win many games if you lose
a turnover battle. I think you know, obviously that turnover

(16:56):
that they had was just key for them. So it's
it's a uh we we gotta chase turnovers and that
that just comes from playing diem of football and kind
of making the other team, uh just making the other
team just kind of break, honestly, and we just, uh
we weren't able to do that tonight. Marvelin two that
you you guys did talk a lot about turnovers this

(17:17):
all season.

Speaker 6 (17:18):
It and it looked like throwing camp that was that
was a big part of what the defense was throwing.

Speaker 13 (17:22):
Just how frustrating is it that that hasn't really translated
to the regular season at least done yet.

Speaker 10 (17:28):
Uh, some of you guys keep working out. I think
that's something you just really gotta keep working out.

Speaker 13 (17:32):
But I think that the key to it is is
frustrating the offense and we j we haven't you know,
like I said, we got 'em in a lot of
third downs.

Speaker 10 (17:40):
It's g we I felt like we.

Speaker 13 (17:41):
Got 'em in positions we wanted to get 'em in,
we got 'em in fourth down, and uh, we just
weren't able to to really throw the offense off. I
feel like they kind of did whatever they wanted to
do kind of all night, and we knew they were
gonna go forward and fourth down, and uh that they
they just they they just simply had toie you better
than us. And we never got them off schedule. And
it's it's really hard if uh office never gets off schedule.

Speaker 5 (18:04):
Maryland, Where do you think this this defense is at
right now?

Speaker 11 (18:06):
Three weeks in short week, getting ready to go to
Kansas City? Just where where are you guys?

Speaker 10 (18:11):
What do you mean?

Speaker 11 (18:12):
Wait, how do you how would you assess what where
this defense is? At three weeks in.

Speaker 13 (18:20):
I'm not gonna give my honest, my my, I try
to I We're not I j I. I mean, we're
just not very good. I think big sing on playing
on the Ravens defense is the organization. The fans, they've
seen greatness, So being bad being good really, I.

Speaker 10 (18:40):
It's just it's just not the standard.

Speaker 13 (18:42):
I think when you you know ray Lewis and and
add and just the great defenses that have just come
through here, that's that's really all they've seen is is
just great. And I feel like, you know, anything other
than that is is below the standard. So right now,
I I do I I do know. We got guys.
I wanna compete. I wanna get the job done. I

(19:02):
feel like we are close, but we just we we
we gotta just all come together. We gotta we we
gotta just finish those third downs. I I feel like
that that was just the biggest key for the night.
And w we we just can't expect our offense. So
I know we got Lamar Jackson, but we we can't.
We just can't expect them to score twenty eight points

(19:27):
every game. Thirty group like that's it's putting uh unfair expectations.
I think on on the offense, so we gotta do
our part, and you know, we we gotta get some stops,
get some turnovers, and and I think, uh, that's the key.
But I know we got a short week, so I
think if there's a week we can turn things around. Uh,
it'll be Uh it could be this week against a

(19:47):
really good team.

Speaker 10 (19:48):
Uh okayse.

Speaker 1 (19:52):
Next, we heard from running back Derrick Henry.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
Here it's all obviously group's out on the sideline.

Speaker 4 (20:00):
Lamar was talking about it and said, you know, there's
still more game to play than the tickets out of
the game. But when something like that happens, it's pretty
tough to kind of recollect yourself and think about the
opportunities that remain. Doesn't take a little bit of time.

Speaker 11 (20:11):
Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm a worst critic, So you
know I'm gonna watch the film right your team to
watch it. Know that a short week, but that's it
was just just just crazy three from straight Yeah, you know,
trying every day to fix a problem, just keep the current.
So I'm trying to work on it. Man, I'm a

(20:34):
worst critic, so you know I'm trying. I'm not gonna
try to beat myself up too much, but it's hard not to.
And you know it's consecutive and assistant and may doing
the same.

Speaker 9 (20:41):
Thing, lamor or anyone speak to you after after that
on sideline, I left.

Everybody trying to figure out what they saw and if
I had the ball loose, and you know, you just
retrace and uh hammered at the ball then and you
can't lose, you know what I'm saying, what y'all you

You just have the confidence you can go down score
from any situation. Good players that we have, but every
good team they got your offense had s had a
had a lot of success. Today you can still just
they did their best and try to hone as much
as they could. You if I turn over as hard,
then put them back in the red zone. But you

(21:47):
still have confidence and getting a job done.
