Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Past podcast. It is Thursday,
December eighteenth. The Ravens are getting ready to play the
New England Patriots coming up on Sunday Night Football. Today,
we had a chance to hear from the coordinators as
well as quarterback Lamar Jackson. Let's kick it off with
number eight.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
From Lamar.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Three weeks left.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
You know we'll taking the pill.
Speaker 5 (00:24):
Your mindset had deep five three weeks.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
I gotta read about the Patriots.
Speaker 6 (00:29):
You know, I can't think ahead, you know, I gotta
focus on these guys cause it's a explosive defense, you know,
explosive offense.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
So we got to lock in.
Speaker 5 (00:39):
Defensively.
Speaker 7 (00:40):
What sticks out the most from what they try to disrupt?
Speaker 6 (00:42):
Quarterbacks rhythm, Charlie, those guys are deepen SI line is phenomenal, linebacker, secondary,
just all phases. Like I said, that defense is explosive,
like to get out of the brought back. So got
to just be on pot to execute everything.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Got a wall off the field in the last two weeks.
You've got a community events, you know why, and this
week was the defeat Washington event than Johnny organised.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
So why was it important for you to to be
part of those and and what's the significance.
Speaker 8 (01:16):
Of that seto?
Speaker 6 (01:17):
Oh man, it was I just well, I was in
Chapel uh last Tuesday. I wanna say, two weeks old,
you know, last Tuesday, and then uh uh Chapel Johnny
Shelton hat told us about this uh event, and I'm like, yeah,
I wanna do that. But I didn't sign up for it,
you know. I just pretty much just went out there
and did that. I I feel like it was cool
(01:38):
to do, you know. I didn't do it for n
no especially little special reason, you know, just trying to
do something for the community and do something christ like
Jesus Christ.
Speaker 8 (01:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (01:51):
Well, Mark, are you how are you feeling to un
like you were under the weather, I say you yeah, good, Yeah,
It's it been frustrating though, when you've had a differ
the injuries and you had a rest day last week
and now having an illness.
Speaker 6 (02:03):
You know, no when Hew did to go, I mean
that's a for mean to catch off, but another rest day,
that's all.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (02:09):
I did feel your running game like Wrey when you
are sickond away, what are are you in the tablet?
Speaker 10 (02:14):
What are you doing if I'm sick I'm sick.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
I'm not going nothing. I'm trying to get better.
Speaker 9 (02:18):
Yeah, how do you feel your running games coming a
long week?
Speaker 11 (02:21):
We did make 'em to stick last week and stuff.
Speaker 5 (02:23):
Uh, you still hadn't had a a run for twenty yards?
Speaker 12 (02:25):
Take you had in the past nineteen in a week fof.
Speaker 6 (02:28):
It was nineteen Yeah, run in to the nearest tenth
twenty yards, man, twenty yards right now, i'm'a take that.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
But uh yeah, Uh, I.
Speaker 6 (02:36):
Feel like I just ran when all it was necessary,
you know, just keep positive, positive yards, get first downs
here and there. But uh, I'm not gonna try to
you know, push anything, you know, just try to do
what I could do.
Speaker 13 (02:47):
You think defenses are maybe treating you different, thinking that
you are trying to take off like you have in
the past.
Speaker 6 (02:52):
N Nah, cause uh Cincinnati was still doing it, was
doing you know the first time on things given when
we played 'em or they did the same thing, similar things.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
But I feel like I'm just getting better.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
Well, Mark, how important is it gonna be when you're
to realize the potentially offense to start faster?
Speaker 13 (03:08):
And is there anything you would point out in some
of the times where you haven't been able to start fast.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
It's kind of been a slog the first couple of yards.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Why why is that happening? Like inconsistency?
Speaker 6 (03:18):
Basically, I can't call it, you know, Uh, but I
felt like this past this past game, we did a
lot better, you know, but those guys just had a
long job so we couldn't get on the field.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
You know.
Speaker 6 (03:29):
They was convert come converting and stuff like that. But
our defense played lights out. But uh, I can't call it.
While we started off slow and while some time we
start off fast, hopefully this game, you know, we start
off fast and finish faster.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Ma Mar you connected with Vilia live this year.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
It got a second touchdown, first one since week won
against Buffalo. Just what it feel like to be able
to connect with him on you know, uh uh the
exposed to play that resulted in a touchdown this time.
Speaker 6 (03:56):
I I feel like it's awesome, you know, but I
would like to connect with all my guys, you know,
cause we got so much potential you know at the
tight end area. Got d how we got bait, we
got tests, got all these guys got uh l l
L Tavia, we got we got these guys. These guys
good you know, these guys could be great, but with
our offense, I'm saying, you know, cause the guys are
already great, but with our offense, they can be even better.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
You know. I'm just trying to get a great conness from.
Speaker 6 (04:20):
Everybody, but they for Zay, he's been working hard, you know,
each and every game he's working.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Hard, work hard, and practice. Man, it was just that timing.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
Why did you look at your red zone offense this year?
I know it's not where you want it to be.
Speaker 9 (04:31):
What's the key the last three games are being more
efficient and getting touchdowns once you get inside the point.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
I feel like, just calm down. You know, we been here.
Speaker 6 (04:42):
We I feel like we execute a lot in practice.
We just gotta push the enveload in the game, you know,
cause it be there. We have opportunities, we just don't.
We just don't take advantage.
Speaker 14 (04:51):
Lamar's it's the last home game.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Is there a sense among the guys just.
Speaker 14 (04:54):
To h help the tech home terfls knowledge?
Speaker 12 (04:58):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (04:59):
We U.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I can't say we really looked at it like it's
the last home game.
Speaker 11 (05:02):
You know.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
We we feel like eaching every game, so we gotta win,
you know, So I don't I don't look at it
like you just cause we home. It's no matter where
we're at, but this game especially, you know, cause you
just said it like it's the last home game. I
didn't even think about that. So we just gotta lock in, man,
protect protect our territory.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Lamark.
Speaker 9 (05:18):
Going going back to what you were saying about the
red zone, just curious, like how much do you view
your mobility and how dangerous you can be with your
legs and in those situations.
Speaker 6 (05:29):
MM, if the uh opportunity presents itself, just take a
b take advantage.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Are you got you.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Feel like you're doing this considering you know the Patriots
and how good they've been this year, you guys at home.
Is is this in the circumstances with the record? Is
this a playoff game where you guys in your mind.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
S e every game is like that, man for the
situation when you know we don't have we got a
playoff hope, but we just gotta win. This game went
out basically, so gotta worry about the Patriots. No, I'm
not gonna say it's a playoff game, because I feel
like every game is a playoff game.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Man, were trying to win.
Speaker 9 (06:08):
The opposite of the the slow starts. You guys have
gone off the pretty good starts in second half. I
think you scored on like six of your your for
your last a opening possessions of the the third. Why
why do you think you've had people maybe had more
success with those adjustments in the second half.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Uh, I don't know. I'm'a stop saying I don't know,
I know, but I don't wanna give it away. How
about that.
Speaker 5 (06:34):
Adjustments?
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Yeah? Adjustments? Okay, Yeah?
Speaker 5 (06:39):
What one more place?
Speaker 11 (06:40):
Uh? You missing the hop?
Speaker 13 (06:42):
Just would you like to get him more involved in it?
Speaker 5 (06:45):
Is?
Speaker 11 (06:46):
Is it?
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Is it tough when you said there are so many
miles two feet in this offense?
Speaker 11 (06:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Absolutely, man, it's definitely wanna get the hop involved. Man,
it ca catch readies. It's crazy.
Speaker 6 (06:56):
I always say this, you know it's catch Rady's is crazy.
Uh C, great contested catcher. You just gotta get more opportunities.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
A right, thank you, I appreciate.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
T Next up is offensive coordinator Todd Monket.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
So is it cover to make evaluations on the offense when.
Speaker 10 (07:17):
You have so many limited number of plays in a game?
Speaker 15 (07:25):
Evaluations of the offense by limited plays.
Speaker 8 (07:29):
I don't know if I'd say that so much as.
Speaker 15 (07:34):
And I wouldn't even say it's frustrating other than you
have to be able to maximize the plays that you
do get. And uh, a lot of times we did that,
you know, Sunday. At the times we didn't, but I
was proud of the way our guys fought. I was
proud of the way they played physical And that showed that.
Speaker 9 (07:54):
Point, like, are you sort of touring when you know
you've got forty plays or whatever it was and it's
you know, nine yards play or whatever versus trying to
get to you know, sixty seventy plays in a game.
Speaker 5 (08:07):
Obviously, some of that's dictated by.
Speaker 9 (08:09):
What happens, but yeah, but finding that balance to get
more plays week to.
Speaker 15 (08:14):
Week, Yeah, it's more frustrating when it happens, say against
the Texans, you know, when you're not playing good and
you know things aren't going your way. I could care
less how many plays we have if we play well
and if it gives us a chance to win, if
we maximize those plays, I mean, obviously whichever we have.
Speaker 8 (08:32):
And and like you said, at times we did and
the times we didn't.
Speaker 11 (08:36):
What you know, it seems like that might be well,
the tougher one seed you guys precision.
Speaker 8 (08:42):
Yeah, they do a great job defensively.
Speaker 15 (08:44):
They play, They do a great job playing off each other,
knock back style, set the edges. They're guys on the perimeter,
you know, do a great job of setting edges when
the ball gets spit out. They are physical, they don't
miss tackles, and they I mean there's and I'll just
add they don't give up a lot of big plays.
I mean that is the recipe for playing great defense,
(09:06):
making the offense earn it.
Speaker 8 (09:07):
So we'll have a real challenge.
Speaker 5 (09:09):
I much like seeing Machine Ellida in the end.
Speaker 8 (09:12):
Zone last week, Well that was cool.
Speaker 15 (09:14):
I mean that was just a check Lamar getting to
that something we had worked so in the right spot.
Speaker 8 (09:23):
Those are the things that.
Speaker 15 (09:26):
As an offense that you get excited about that you
do and you carry over practice to the games.
Speaker 8 (09:31):
That's really it. But more than anything, just for our guys,
you know collectively.
Speaker 13 (09:37):
You feel like they's a common denominator to the slow
starts offensive.
Speaker 8 (09:43):
I don't know that.
Speaker 15 (09:44):
I mean two weeks ago against Cincinnati, we scored in
the first drive and then we got backed up for
a couple of drives and then we had an opportunity
for a touchdown was a likely and we didn't get it.
And you know, I think I don't like eight of
the fourteen games we scored in the first drive. So
sometimes it's sometimes it's at Sometimes we haven't started very fast.
There's a number of times we defer so you don't
(10:05):
get the ball to start, or that adds to it.
You know, at one point we were leading the NFL
and points in the second half. Well, some of that's
playing better then and some of it get you start
the second half with the ball, all of which we
certainly are looking to start fast, that's for sure.
Speaker 9 (10:20):
When the weather gets quarter, it seems Derrick Henry Assen,
with his best performances in December and January.
Speaker 5 (10:25):
Will make some such a threat when the temperature drops.
Speaker 15 (10:29):
Well, I think he's a threat no matter what the
temperature is. But I do think that as the temperature
drops or the weather changes, the running game certainly comes
to the forefront. I think he's a hard guy to tackle.
I think we've played well at the back end of
the year. I think the statistics would back that up.
And when you're playing well, that means you're ahead and
(10:52):
you're running in the third and fourth quarter and you're
wearing down the defense. I think that would hold true
even in the playoffs. You know, when we played the
Texans or the Steelers over the last few years, you're
able to.
Speaker 8 (11:01):
Get ahead, stay ahead and run the football.
Speaker 14 (11:05):
It's odd displayed the low number of plays that we
did see and uptick in explosive plays like the flowers
and hop and Troy of catches. How satisfying is that
for the offense if we've guys have an appetite for
more of those in the explosive.
Speaker 15 (11:20):
Players, well, I mean, let's talk about what wins. Don't
turn it over, be explosive touchdown in the red zone,
eliminate lost yards plays, and be excellent conversion downs. We've
been explosive in the run game. I think we're first
in yards per carry, we're like seventh in yards per attempt.
(11:42):
Where we've struggled is in the other areas, right touchdowns,
we've turned it over and we've had too many sacks.
I mean, that's what's gonna bog you down. I mean,
have we been explosive as last year. No, There's been
reasons for that. All of us are part of that.
But the struggles have come when we haven't converted in
the red zone, when we haven't always converted on third
(12:03):
downs in short yardage situations, especially five or less. We've
been fine in the others, and then we've we've had
to way too many sacks that all of a sudden
you look at drives it. You know, even like last
week k sack, all of a sudden, you're going, it's
hard to overcome second seventeen or another sack. And those
are the things that can call it better and we
can collectively continue to strive for excellence. And it's about
(12:26):
this week. Everything statistically only matters what we do this week.
Speaker 9 (12:30):
To your point about the red zone, how important is
the nours and mobility in that area.
Speaker 15 (12:35):
That's huge. But that hasn't been all of it. I
mean that I got to call it better. We can
scheme it better, we can block it better, we can
certainly execute in the passing game better, and.
Speaker 8 (12:47):
Hold onto the ball. I mean all of them. I
think we talked about this a couple of weeks ago.
It all collectively adds up. It's not one thing.
Speaker 15 (12:53):
There's four or five areas where we just haven't you know,
executed at a high level a number of areas, and
when we do that, I really believe we're gonna take
off because those areas that are stopping us, we certainly
have plenty of playmakers and that has shown up statistically Rishat.
Speaker 13 (13:10):
Not being able to go past Sunday obviously more playing
time for Ford top.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
What did you make of the snap of the give
you guys?
Speaker 13 (13:17):
I guess what is kind of keeping him from being
maybe as explosive and productive as he was those first two.
Speaker 8 (13:21):
Weeks for you guys, nothing in particular. Some of it is.
Speaker 15 (13:28):
The balld has done come his way, some of it
is we haven't called his number. Some of it last
week was we were running at a ton, we didn't
have a ton of plays. All of the above is
added into that, and hopefully we can get him going
this week.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
All good do you do?
Speaker 9 (13:45):
You're just go make to the starting fast thing? That
the kind of the opposite. It's been true in the
second half. I think you guys are scored in like
six of the eight first positions.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Why do you think you get him?
Speaker 11 (13:54):
Like?
Speaker 3 (13:55):
What's worked there? Adjustment of that.
Speaker 8 (13:56):
Highs for you guys, I don't, I don't, I don't know.
I mean, I really don't. I mean, someone might come
up and say they got that figured out.
Speaker 15 (14:04):
Like it's not like we haven't planned the whole week
for the start of the game of what we like,
you know, I would think that a whole week of
planning is better than twenty minutes of halftime.
Speaker 8 (14:14):
I mean normally, I don't know.
Speaker 15 (14:18):
Sometimes, like I said, if you get the ball to
start the second half, you know, sometimes field position plays
into that, like the Bengals game, and I know I'm
going a little so we score the opening drive. Ta
doesn't feel the punt, We get it and backed up
and Lamar fumbles. We get a great stop, but we're
at the two. We don't get ourselves out well. Then
we get really good field position, we move it and
(14:39):
we fumble, and then we get a pass interference call.
So I don't know exactly why that is coming out
at halftime, because it's not like we're not discussing a
lot of the same things, you know. And like I said,
we've had plenty of games where we've started fast.
Speaker 8 (14:55):
We just haven't been able to continue that. And there's
a number of reasons.
Speaker 15 (14:59):
Why we just got to can and you to fight
to stack plays that's the biggest thing collectively calls and
then our players executing.
Speaker 13 (15:07):
God, I'm not sure you're aware of this, but seems
like a lot of ordinators and quarterbacks to speak, have
been asked about, you know, progression reads and average reads.
Speaker 5 (15:15):
I guess you give a preference for kind of the
way you teach it.
Speaker 8 (15:18):
Pat said that that was going to come up.
Speaker 15 (15:19):
I said, well, I'm like the eighth different guy that's
going to have to comment on that.
Speaker 8 (15:23):
And really all of it.
Speaker 15 (15:25):
Is exactly what quarterbacks and coaches have talked about, which
is with all the disguises and looks that you're going
to see and all the things that quarterback has to
go through, I think it enables at times a quarterback
to have a smoke break in terms of I can
start one side and kind of sweep the board, you know,
(15:48):
old school one high too high man takes me to
a side, especially in certain quick game you know, you
know concepts, but you.
Speaker 8 (15:58):
See it across the board.
Speaker 15 (16:00):
And coaches have been doing that for a long I mean,
Kyle Shanahan's been doing that for a while. That's shown
up in their schemes and Sean McVay and guys like that,
and I think you're seeing more and more at the
college level that way, so I think it's an easier
transition for the guys.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Next, we heard from defensive coordinator Zach Orr.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
So exact, when it gets closer to the end of
the game and you know your defense is kind of
like being backed up and you see that zero still
up on that scoreboard, how much is it the motivation
to finish it off and get that shut out.
Speaker 10 (16:41):
I mean, it's definitely motivation.
Speaker 16 (16:43):
I mean, it's definitely motivation because you want to put
the players and the guys you know they're conscious about it.
But I think the thing that we were most pleased
about was we just wanted to finish the game. I mean,
at that point in time, it was seventeen seventeen zero,
still like eight nine minutes left in the game, and
we all been around league long enough that no lead
is safe, man, and a lot of things can happen.
(17:04):
So we wanted to just put an exciamation point on
the game. And hats off to the guys that made
the play man. It was great execution from the jump
with holding the look, holding the disguise TVs t Rob
great on his path and then KB doing what he's
supposed to do, getting to his spot, intercepting the ball.
And man, when he was running, I seen he was
slowing up looking the ladder that I was screaming, don't
(17:27):
do it, don't do it. And then all of a sudden,
I see Love running up the sideline. So that was
that was a heck of a play, man. And that's
that's the way you finished. We've been talking about that
the whole time, taking it play by play. Finished the play,
finished the quarter, finished the half, and finished the game.
Speaker 10 (17:41):
And it was good to see the guys finished the game.
Speaker 11 (17:43):
That was finit jet read type play back.
Speaker 14 (17:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
And I asked Chris the same question. Did you know
that Ed was.
Speaker 5 (17:49):
Showing up and what kind.
Speaker 11 (17:51):
Of impact did he make?
Speaker 17 (17:52):
And what do you think he had to say to
the guys.
Speaker 9 (17:55):
I know Marlon commented on the food distinctions and all that.
Speaker 16 (17:59):
Yeah, I mean, I didn't know he was coming in
that day, but when we found out he was in shoot,
we was excited. Man, So I was gonna look, I
was looking for him to come ask him talk to
the defense, and he was already in there talking to
the defensive back.
Speaker 10 (18:10):
So the rest of the defense we just.
Speaker 16 (18:11):
Came in there and he shared some great words man
about how he would love to be back in this
building playing football, and that you can't take it for
granted and if you if you want to win, you
got to go take it.
Speaker 11 (18:23):
Man.
Speaker 16 (18:24):
You gotta hold yourself accountable, and you got to hold
each other accountable, and you got to be on the
same page. And part of accountability is what you do
off the field, man, So what you're putting in your body,
how you're handing yourself, how you taking notes and meetings,
And I think that's it' that's a real good message
to hear from a guy who's one of the best
to ever lace him up. And he was in He
was in this building for many years. A lot of
(18:44):
the players, all of them know who he is. A
lot of them watched his film, still watch his film
and see the players that he made. So when you
in that presence, I think it does something to you. Man,
he came out and practice and talk to the team
and was there hanging out. I think it was good man.
I definitely think that he inspired inspired our guys and
and that that's good man. I think as a as
(19:06):
an alumni or we want to call a legend. I
think whenever you get a chance to come back, come
back and talk to the guys, man, you never know,
you can inspire. And he definitely inspired not only them,
but us as coaches as well.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
It's kind of a component of bringing back guys. So
like in your street of Ravens, whether it's pictures or
video of fist all that stuff, Like why why do
you think.
Speaker 5 (19:24):
That that's important?
Speaker 16 (19:26):
Just because man, Like, we do a great job here man,
coach Harbaugh, you see these guys.
Speaker 10 (19:31):
We honor these guys.
Speaker 16 (19:32):
Man, their pictures are on the wall, videos are always playing,
and you know, you want to really see the you
want the guys to really see why these guys up here,
what does it mean to play like a raven? And
we talk about it, but let's show you and it
just has to be some of the guys who played
like a Raven are some of the best players to.
Speaker 10 (19:49):
Ever play this game.
Speaker 16 (19:50):
And so I think at whenever you see guys, you
hear about the great stories of them. I think, whenever
they can come around and you can you can have
conversations with them, it kind of just connects connects one another.
So that's why I'm a big proponent of just showing
the guys like, hey, look play like a rave and
this is what it is. These guys have reached and
accomplished what you're trying to accomplish, what we're trying to
(20:11):
accomplish as a team and individual and individually. So I
think it's always good to show those guys what it
looks like.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
Teddy going down Trent obviously shouldn't all.
Speaker 18 (20:21):
Be more of a picture.
Speaker 10 (20:22):
Can you talk about what how you've seen him grow this.
Speaker 18 (20:24):
Year and how you think you know, maybe you still.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Be using various spots and just what you see.
Speaker 16 (20:29):
Yeah, man, trend's growing up a lot. I think that
you look at it. You know, you always look when
you're where you're going through tough times. You never know why,
you know why you're going through that, what is preparing
you for? And I look at it when Rokwan missed
time earlier in the year and Teddy and Trent went
in there and were starting for a couple of games,
and they played well. Trent played really good in those games,
those two of his best games in his career.
Speaker 10 (20:49):
And I think I.
Speaker 16 (20:50):
Said that Teddy, we went with Teddy, think Teddy was
slightly a little bit better. But now Trent's opportunities back again.
And Teddy went down early in the game, and Trent
stepped right in played really well. Still still was able
to execute his various roles, and so I'm excited for
him to go out there and show what he can do.
We all got the utmost confidence in him. Row has
confidence in him, and the team and the defense have
(21:12):
confidence in him. So I think that those those games
he got to play early on really is going to
help him out going forward for the rest of the year.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Back to that point, what do we see from Trendon
this year, either in meetings, in preparation or in.
Speaker 11 (21:25):
The games, and he has played that gives you confidence.
Speaker 5 (21:26):
I mean he's lost his drop twice in the last
two years.
Speaker 11 (21:28):
What gives you confidence?
Speaker 1 (21:29):
This could be the one that he gives gives you
the kind of football you need.
Speaker 16 (21:32):
Yeah, I think they's just more He's just more comfortable.
He's just more comfortable. I think that, you know, like
I said, going with Teddy, it wasn't no knock on
trend I think that was just like how well like
Teddy was really playing. So but I see a guy
who's locked in taking notes like he has command out there.
He's more vocal and he's a strong, physical guy, and
he's running, he's hitting, or theyre gonna be mistakes here
(21:53):
and there. Everybody make mistakes. Some of my best players
make mistakes, but he has limited those mistakes a lot man.
So that's what get the confidence. And like I said,
this is the game that we went we just finished playing.
I mean, you go in from maybe getting two or
three reps with the with the starters a day to
really have to.
Speaker 10 (22:10):
Go in there and go play.
Speaker 16 (22:11):
Howevery many snaps he had to go play against against
that offense with in that high pressure situation, and he
didn't bat eye and he still had to play off
his special team snaps. So that just shows you what
type of player and what type of man he is.
Speaker 10 (22:23):
Youth special teams Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 16 (22:26):
I told I told Hort, I said, look, don't take
him on special teams.
Speaker 10 (22:29):
I said, if he's tired, we'll figure something out.
Speaker 16 (22:31):
But we got we need all our best players out there,
and he's one of our best special teams players as
well too.
Speaker 5 (22:36):
Is that hard when.
Speaker 9 (22:36):
You've already had three or now three line miners now
and the injury.
Speaker 11 (22:41):
Is that part of the calculus or.
Speaker 16 (22:42):
Is it just you know, yeah, yeah, it's just it's
just it's just it's just part of it.
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Man.
Speaker 16 (22:46):
It's just you only get so many guys active on
game day, and if you got your helmet, you gotta
be ready to play. So whoever's out there on the
on the sideline, if your number is called, you better
know what to do and you got to go out
there and execute.
Speaker 13 (22:57):
Exact what you doubt about Frank May has made him
so good, so fast.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
I mean, pretty rare territory to be an MVP candid
the year.
Speaker 16 (23:04):
Man, i'mna be honest, man, I'm really impressed with Drake May.
And I think the before we talk about the physical tools,
I think it's the mental man, Like they put everything
on this dude's play. I mean, this is a new
system for him this year. He has full control and
he has to get them in the right checks. In
the run game, he has to point out the most
dangerous man for this receiver to block. He has to
(23:25):
get him in the right protection. Usually centers, you know,
handle that with young quarterbacks. He's doing that. He's a
sight of justin routs. He's checking plays, so he's doing
he has full control. He's running the show at the
line of scrimmage. And that's what and I cut on tape,
that's what really impressed me with him. I'm like, man,
this guy's in his second year and he has full
control of the whole offense. He's running the show like
(23:46):
nobody's telling them what to do. He's all the responsibility
is on him, which is impressive. You really don't see
that with second year guys, especially somebody in their first
first year in a new system. And then you talk
about the physical gifts. Obviously, it's a reason why he
was a top five pick. He can make every throw
he could throw on the run. He's he can move better.
He moves better than what I even remember him coming out,
(24:08):
so he extends plays.
Speaker 10 (24:09):
I mean, he's just a real good player, man.
Speaker 16 (24:11):
And you can see why he has the m v
P hype and and why they won eleven games because
he's their best player. And he's really blossomed into one
of the top quarterbacks in his second year, which is
which is impressive.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
I don't know how often you get the chance.
Speaker 13 (24:27):
To watch the Sunday that football and I see I
just calling for I like to get that time the
opening pre game and the player and their positional ranking.
Speaker 4 (24:36):
Yeah, like, I don't know how big hit that was
during your day, but couple's your relationship.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
With ye, the whole thing. And then maybe like what
you tell players who don't tell players about kind of
positional ranking.
Speaker 16 (24:48):
Yeah, I always tell them, I said, because there's a
lot of stuff that's out there, and I tell them,
we here.
Speaker 10 (24:54):
We watch the film, we go off the film.
Speaker 16 (24:55):
We judge you off off the film that you're playing,
not off of ranking. I think the rank is are
are are are good for for some reasons, but truth
be told, the coaches and the players only know what
defense we're actually running, who's responsible for what, So it's
tough to kind of rank somebody, you know, when you
don't fully understand the responsibility of what that person is doing.
(25:19):
I think it's good for, you know, general, for the
fans to put stuff together, but our players, man, we
tell them, don't worry about you know, what's being said
good or bad on the outside. You just need to
worry about its being said in the building, because that's
what matters.
Speaker 13 (25:33):
Zach.
Speaker 14 (25:33):
When Dreymond is winning as consistently as he was a
moment outside, and even affecting on the inside. How impactful
was that for for other players?
Speaker 13 (25:41):
And just how physical do you.
Speaker 5 (25:42):
Think that the entire front was.
Speaker 10 (25:44):
Man, it's it's impactful.
Speaker 16 (25:45):
Man, It's real impactful when you can win with the
four man rush and you can win in multiple spots
and now you can hunt mismatches and that's what he
was able to do with with Draymond, and I thought
the whole front man, the outside linebackers of d line
played their best game of the season last week and
we needed him to.
Speaker 10 (26:00):
We told him, we said, look, we're gonna have to
go in here.
Speaker 16 (26:02):
We have to win with four at times, and they
dominated in the four man rush and the physical It
all started with the physicality and the violence. We challenge
those guys non stop to play like play like that,
regardless who's in there. And they've done that. Man, they
did that. So we're looking for another performance of that.
We can get that out of them, we're gonna be
in good shape. So they had a great practice today.
We're looking forward to it. Appreciate it.
Speaker 10 (26:24):
Thank you all.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Next up, as special teams coordinator Chris.
Speaker 18 (26:31):
Horton, I hope you guys are all doing well. What
questions do you have.
Speaker 10 (26:36):
Man.
Speaker 5 (26:37):
A lot was made about Ed Reed's presidence.
Speaker 13 (26:39):
After the game, everything taking out the drunk food to
what he had to say.
Speaker 11 (26:44):
How much do you think the impacts.
Speaker 18 (26:46):
I mean, it's Ed Reed, right, I mean, those guys
are gonna listen when a player like that speaks, guys
are gonna listen. And then it's just part of us
just going out and playing football. It was good to
have him here. It's always good to get a word from,
you know, a veteran player like that Hall player. I mean,
it's just inspiration anytime those guys come around. I mean,
I'm not even a player and I was fired up,
So it's good.
Speaker 10 (27:07):
It's good.
Speaker 18 (27:07):
I grew up watching him, you know, watching him play,
so it's good to have him around.
Speaker 5 (27:10):
Was that a surprise or was that?
Speaker 18 (27:14):
Uh? I have no I have no idea. I mean,
you know, you show it up. You know, like all
these guys, all these guys are welcome back in Baltimore, right.
Speaker 11 (27:20):
Uh.
Speaker 18 (27:20):
They help, they helped build this place. So when you
get those guys back, it's always good to uh hear.
It's always good to hear from him.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
For some is that as is that as physical and
as sounding things you play that kick covered each all
the year or was that one of your biggest takeaways
come around of that game.
Speaker 18 (27:37):
Jeff, I'm that that's a that's a great question. That's
one of those things we've been chasing, right, we've been
talking about starting with uh, just with Tyler right, uh
and him being consistent on where he places the ball,
and we got an opportunity to see that in the
in the game this week against a against a pretty
good return team and then and our guys, man, Uh,
they've been chasing it. They've been playing pretty well all year.
They've been I think they've been covering pretty well. And uh,
(27:59):
they just went out there and they played. They played
good sound football the way we played football, and it
was it was good to see. It was good to see,
you know, all the different guys making plays right, just
being in the right spot. I think Charlie just just
running people over and getting to the football. I think
David Ajabbel just being in the right spot right and
making tackles. And that's the way we want to play
football around here. So it was it was really good
(28:21):
to see.
Speaker 5 (28:23):
Growth. I know, you you know, Randy had it set
had his sight set.
Speaker 13 (28:27):
On on Tyler pretty early on as a as a kicker.
Speaker 5 (28:31):
Obviously port Gallas.
Speaker 11 (28:32):
There is another rookie who went just before him.
Speaker 5 (28:35):
Was was he a guy who who got to know
it all during the free jot process?
Speaker 13 (28:38):
And I guess how surprising is it to have you
two rookies both right around nine percent in the first year.
Speaker 18 (28:43):
You know what what Randy does with those guys, you
know when he goes out and he talks to him.
I had a chance to talk with Brigallis at the
at the combine and and we sit around and you know,
we all conversated at the round tables, but you know,
obviously Tyler, Tyler was our guy with Randy BARTI man,
we talked about it, and it's just it's just good
to see young guys, you know, here out here making
kicks and having success.
Speaker 8 (29:02):
Right.
Speaker 18 (29:02):
Uh. People, people expect them to fail when they come
in because because they are young and they're not veteran guys.
But when they trust the process and they go through
the fundamentals of those things show up right and the
ball goes through the uprights, and it'll be good to
see those guys. Those two guys go out and compete, I.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
Mean on a non contact.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
Situation like that.
Speaker 18 (29:23):
It's it's it's always tough, you know, to lose a
player like Teddy. Uh, he's done. He's done so well
for US man since the day he walked in this
in this building. Uh, you know, he was a he
was a pro. We talk about being pros and as
a young guy that came in, you know, as a
pro and established himself as a player not only for
US but also on the defensive side of the ball.
But you know, it was it was tough, you know,
(29:44):
anytime you see a non contact injury and how much
he's how much he's done for us and the success
he's had in our phase of the game. We're gonna
miss him, but you know, we you know, obviously we
wish him well and we'll and we'll get the next
man ready to go and go play some good football
for US.
Speaker 14 (29:59):
Land ranks top three or or five, and fun Perturn
average stands out about that particular and you think of
performance from here, get covers and.
Speaker 10 (30:08):
You can transition into it.
Speaker 18 (30:11):
It's it's pretty easy, right, I like to say, you know,
anytime we've been we've been challenged with we've faced some
pretty good returners. Throughout the season, just one last week, right,
and then you know it starts with us first protecting
the punt with all with all due respect to Marcus
Marcus Jones, he's a heck of a player. We respect him,
but obviously, man, we're gonna go out and play our
(30:31):
game because it all starts with us. And if we
protect the punt and we cover the punt like we
know how, which we've done a really good job at
it this year. You know, our guys have been getting
on the field, We've been making place we should we
should be fine. We just we just got to do
our job, and it's always gonna be about us. We
respect the guys on the other side, but also they
also got to play us.
Speaker 19 (30:51):
Football fans know that traditions matter. They're what inspire us
to make our Massa and tostedos the traditional way, starting
with whole corn kernels, no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives,
all too give you that perfect crunch. Discover your next
tradition this football season. Head to the store, grab your
Tostedos team bag, and scan the code for a chance
to score an epic experience with the Baltimore Ravens. Tostitos
tradition matters.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
In locker room today, we heard from a handful of guys,
including running back Derrick Henry.
Speaker 16 (31:17):
D.
Speaker 7 (31:17):
You guys have kind of been in a situation for
a while with the one in five star. But but
knowing what's at sake in these final three, does the
magnitude of these games get any bigger? Or you can't
let yourself go there a.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
Lot things this time last week.
Speaker 12 (31:30):
You gotta win every single name, start winning the playoffs
right now, Every single name matters, and you gotta win
every one of them.
Speaker 7 (31:36):
When you're in that playoff mode mindset, What does change
besides change, Yeah, besides the must win obviously, But what
increases or anything at all change when you get into
those kind of games in that mindset that's.
Speaker 11 (31:47):
Actually romance business.
Speaker 16 (31:48):
You know, mis state, you know what you gotta do
so you win there Obviously, played Mike great.
Speaker 2 (31:55):
He seems like he's always had a history of having this,
guys and embrace for the playofs What is it about
my grades.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
Little coach league teams?
Speaker 2 (32:03):
So that does just seem like they're alwa always in
a flight.
Speaker 12 (32:06):
Lady's thinking suggest to his coaching coaching staff and having
this type of pair. He's a great coach. He does
a great job, and you know they they're doing a
great job this year and that's why they'll know in
the a conversation and in the running front of the
top seed. So it's he's a he's a great coach.
He doesn't the don't wow.
Speaker 7 (32:24):
What does a shut out win like day against the Bagles?
Speaker 15 (32:27):
Do you put cops its team going forty to sixteen?
Speaker 11 (32:31):
What is this?
Speaker 7 (32:32):
Just shut the shout out win?
Speaker 12 (32:34):
I mean, I guess, I mean good and they didn't
score her, but we we won the game? Gets a
vision deforming? Yeah, it was a b on to the
next one.
Speaker 7 (32:42):
What'd you take away from the Russian attack in Cincinnati?
Speaker 8 (32:44):
From this offense?
Speaker 10 (32:47):
Executed?
Speaker 11 (32:48):
Well? Got the running game going.
Speaker 12 (32:50):
You gotta continue to you know, do it for this
upcoming game. But preparacing it's it's just key.
Speaker 5 (32:57):
And I'll just translate to him her trypard Si.
Speaker 11 (33:00):
This is a run first golf fans?
Speaker 3 (33:01):
Is that the way you look at it?
Speaker 11 (33:02):
I mean, what the what did a Hankos say?
Speaker 5 (33:05):
Run first golf fans?
Speaker 3 (33:06):
And that's what that's what that's what it is.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
Next up, we heard from safety Kyle Hamilton.
Speaker 11 (33:17):
You know this is a Sunday and football game.
Speaker 13 (33:19):
PFF rankings get showing when you get introduced in like
the starting lineup.
Speaker 5 (33:22):
What's your kind of relationship with your PFF for the
grades and just everything.
Speaker 11 (33:25):
I mean, do you do you care one way or another?
I have no opinion.
Speaker 17 (33:30):
I think PFF is good for some stuff and kind
of paints a bad picture for other things. No discredit
to what they got going on, but you know, obviously
being in the meeting rooms and understanding assignments, it's hard
to put blame on one or another thing if you're
not in the rooms. I think alignment stuff. I think
like end of the day covered stuff. I think more
(33:51):
analytical stuff is probably it's probably a good thing, but
probably like pluses and minus, his own plays, probably not
as reliable.
Speaker 4 (34:03):
Something when you uh put him or the tape of
Drake may what kind of jumps out at you?
Speaker 11 (34:08):
Yeah? He Uh well, I think he's super mobile, big arm,
big guy.
Speaker 19 (34:14):
Uh.
Speaker 17 (34:14):
I've met Drake a couple of times, too good dude,
And but just as a player like he presents a
lot of problems for defense.
Speaker 11 (34:21):
I can't remember the last time.
Speaker 17 (34:23):
We went against like a very mobile quarterback like Drake,
so it'd be big for us just to have good
rush lanes. But I mean, he can hurt you just
as much with his legs as he can on his arm,
So big problems to him. I know, he's like in
the MVP conversation everything all deservedly. So he's had a
great year. It's only a second year, right, Yeah, so
(34:43):
uh probably gonna be a problem in the league for
a long time.
Speaker 11 (34:45):
So um excited to go up against him. Team to Sunday.
Speaker 18 (34:48):
How much your.
Speaker 13 (34:48):
Discussion as you've been as a team about the finishing
in the regular season at home on a high.
Speaker 11 (34:53):
On that for what you guys? Yeah, I think, uh,
our home record is not what we wanted to be.
Speaker 2 (35:00):
Uh. I.
Speaker 17 (35:00):
I don't think it's as much as focusing on finishing
strong at home as it is just finishing strong the
whole year. Obviously, we got some pretty important games coming
up starting with this one, So home, away, neutral, wherever
it may be, in parking lot, we gotta lock in
and uh.
Speaker 11 (35:15):
Do we need to do so we can get in
the dance of shout out?
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Is that something that you think can be you can
build off of from week to week?
Speaker 14 (35:21):
You go forward.
Speaker 17 (35:23):
Yeah, for sure. I think it's a confidence builder definitely.
And again Cincinnati, who I mean, kind of had our
numbers since I've been here. I can't remember performance where
we left Cincinnati game feeling good about ourselves since I've
been here, really, So I think that was a big
confidence boost for us as a defense. Just knowing like
what we're capable of and still watching that film and
understanding where we.
Speaker 11 (35:43):
Could be better at. It's a big thing for us.
Speaker 17 (35:45):
So Scoreboard says, zero points is obviously what we love
at the end of the day, but still a lot
of stuff we can get better at through these last
few games into playoffs.
Speaker 11 (35:53):
Uh. What makes New England's ground games so good? I
mean I think they're like top ten and explosive runs
this year. Yeah, I think they don't shy away from it.
Speaker 17 (36:00):
You know, it seems just from watching the film you
can see their mentalities just we're gonna do it until
you stop it. And they got two great backs and
obviously quarterbacks intential of that run game. But yeah, it's
kind of a very complimentary type of backfield that they have.
Kind of reminds me of Detroit a little bit. Just
what they have going on there. Stevenson and Henderson, they
both can gas you for big runs and then also
(36:23):
run downhill get out the backfield, so.
Speaker 11 (36:25):
Presents a lot of problems.
Speaker 17 (36:26):
They go, uh like full back sets, kind of like
old school eye football and kind of just challenge you
to man up and play the run. So we're definitely
gonna get that challenge this Sunday, and I'm excited to
see what's going against.
Speaker 1 (36:36):
Its extra special for you at the region of the
building and talks the team.
Speaker 10 (36:41):
Like he was last week.
Speaker 17 (36:42):
Yeah yeah, uh, not even just because I'm a safety,
but I mean, as an added point, but any of
those guys who's on the walls in these buildings that
we walk past any every day, it's good to know
that they're not just names and faces. They actually come
in and like have conversations with us and h kind
of keep it real with us, like, hey, this would
not have flown when we were on the team.
Speaker 11 (37:03):
And you know, here's also stuff that y'all do.
Speaker 17 (37:06):
Well, it's not just they come in and bash us
like like their boomers or something, but they they give
us pieces of advice and stuff that we can hold
onto throughout the game, throughout the practice, week stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
See how pressed Trent Simpson, particularly in the second half.
Speaker 11 (37:21):
What have you seen from him?
Speaker 15 (37:22):
Just the way he's carried himself, for the way he's
operated this year, it gives you confidence he.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
Can play the kind of football he's gonna need you
down the stretch.
Speaker 17 (37:28):
Yeah, I mean, I sound like broken records Sanders, but
we have guys. We were best kept secrets. Honestly on
this defense, we were super talented. Just just the way
things shake out. Don't get a ton of snaps at
whatever position. But you know, obviously sucks for Teddy. He's
having a great rookie year and it sucks to see
somebody go down like that. But he's got a bright
future ahead of him. I'm sure do great you have.
(37:49):
But Trend steps in and it's almost like it was
a seamless change. It's not like they came in. He
came in and they started gashing us in the run
and stuff like that. He actually made a lot of
stops and like, and I'm we're gonna be relying on
him going down the stretch. So I'm excited for him.
You know, it was year three. Now he's going up
a lot supersided. Just put his talent on this play,
cause I think he has honestly wanted more talented people
(38:09):
on this team and on this defense.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
Kin they they gonna have.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
A go to guy in the passing game that Drake
spreads the ball around to all those guys. Is that
more difficult to prepare for as opposed to you know,
when you have that guy that you know that a
quarterback is looking to, especially on money downs.
Speaker 17 (38:24):
Yeah, I I I don't think it's I don't think
you meant this in your question. I don't think it's
like a lack of having a guy. I think it's
kind of a surplus of having guys that they have, uh,
you know with digs and uh, a bunch of different
guys on that offense that can catch the ball and
are dangerous in the past game.
Speaker 11 (38:44):
And it's up to us to one I won on once.
