Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome into the Ravens Press Past Podcast. The date is Thursday,
September twenty fifth, and today after practice we heard from
the Ravens coordinators Todd Monkin, Zach Orr, and Chris Horton,
as well as safety Kyle Hamilton. First up on Ravens
Press Past Podcast, you'll hear from offensive coordinator Todd munkin.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
All right, Tom, seems like on that first drive that
he had sam Way, the run game was going very well.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
What do you think changed after that first drive?

Speaker 4 (00:35):
Oh, a number of things. I mean, we never really
after the first drive. Then we went three and out.
Then we got a good drive going, moved it down there,
didn't have scorre, but then we were in two minutes
so at halftime we really didn't have a number of plays.
We never really got in a rhythm running. It's probably
the best way to put it, because longer runs will

(00:57):
come as the game goes on. We never really got
in a rhythm of running it.

Speaker 5 (01:00):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
Something to do with them, some to do the flow
of the game, some to do it just calling it
and execution.

Speaker 6 (01:10):
I mean John John said yesterday the obviously have teams
have scheme for years particul to run away from you
guys putting a lot of guys, you know, maybe eight
guys up and you've beaten it before. What's what's your
Minder's the key to meeting it now?

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Oh? I mean it's all the above. I mean if
there there's not any one thing, and it's uh, it's
a long season and you're gonna have games you don't
run it nearly as well. Uh, it's gonna be harder
when you're not able to stack plays together and stay
ahead of the chains. I mean when you're in get
back on track, when you're in third downs. A number
of our plays the other the other night came in

(01:46):
two minutes. I mean, let's be honest about it. So
we can certainly do a better job scheming it and
executing it. And uh, you know, I still expect it
to be a strong suit for.

Speaker 6 (01:55):
Us without a provocal back that team.

Speaker 7 (02:00):
And how much is that forced you to change how
you data, especially the right gear?

Speaker 4 (02:06):
Some of it has, but you know Zire has done
a great job and that that's that's just an excuse.
You know, there's still the execution piece and the scheme piece,
and that we got to be better at. I mean,
that's the way it is. It's I mean, these guys
are pro players. Whoever we put out there, we've got
to be able to run it and throw it.

Speaker 8 (02:25):
Missed opportunity down there with for single three I think
it was four plays there inside the five. What what
in your mind broke down there?

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Well, without a doubt, Uh, you know, the first play
we had a chance to get it. In the second play,
we had a chance to get it. In third done
was probably a poor call, you know, to go lateral
that put us you know, we lost yards on that play.
And and that's been you know, people ask like why
the red zone numbers are a little bit down, and
it is a small sample size. It's we're four for

(02:54):
four when we don't go backwards and have a penalty,
and we're two for seven when we do, and that
that's that's going to happen. I mean, when you go
backwards and to be really good in the red zone
scoring touchdowns, you have to be able to run it,
which we are able to do. And then having an
athletic quarterback allows you to utilize him in the run game,
and also he can make plays when things aren't there

(03:17):
and there's tighter windows and Lamar's proven to do that,
so you know, just was unfortunate is the best way
to put it. You know, we have the same kind
of scenario against the Browns where we you know, threw
it on first down, got a penalty, backs up, then
we unfortunately Marke didn't secure the catch. And those are
blown opportunities that we can't let get away.

Speaker 6 (03:37):
And you look at the weeks while Omar was under
pressure as.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
Much as he was as quite I think in seven secs, I.

Speaker 9 (03:43):
Know it's not willing, but.

Speaker 6 (03:46):
With a few things that you saw when.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
You with that, well, like I said, it's not one thing.
You know, guys getting the spots, quicker situational calls, all
the above. I mean, there's there's a number of things.
And I think one thing great about our group is, uh,
they take ownership. It doesn't matter who it is, no
matter what player, what coach, take ownership when it doesn't

(04:08):
look like you want it to look like. And that's
that's everything you work for all week. So when it
comes to Sunday Monday, it looks like you want it
to look like. And when it doesn't, Uh, then you've
got to go back to the drawing board and make
sure that you're you're cleaned up uh in every day
in your meetings and your practice habits are over one.

Speaker 10 (04:28):
Hundred rushing yard against can't say the last year a
pretty productive undrounds the design rushers scrambles. Is that something
that you expect them to try to take away this
time or is it just you know, that's kind of
how they have designed with the events to give some
softness there.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Well some of it, some of it he naturally gets,
you know, and cold runs you know that he's involved in,
and some of it comes when you're throwing the football.
I mean, that's that's a weapon that he has in
his arsenal to when it breaks down he can take
all and that gets on you know, your rushing yards.

(05:03):
You know, they've done the same things that Detroit did,
which is at times they've spied Lamar And people have
asked me about you know, the spy and it's like, well,
it's really good. You know. The longer the play develops
and the more the quarterback ends up stepping up, uh
that scheme provide provide prevents you from the quarterback being

(05:25):
able to run. But the advantage of that for us
is if they're not rushing, it's one less rusher, and
if they're not in coverage, it's one less cover guy.
So there's give and take to every coverage and every
scheme and and uh, you know, they made a couple
of plays on it, but the Chiefs have done that
as well.

Speaker 11 (05:43):
With Dary, he.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Talked about working on overcoming answering the guy's over car
of rights and just in general to help them putting
in near that.

Speaker 4 (05:53):
Well, he works on it on his own. There's nothing
I after. He knows that he's a very conscientious pro. Uh,
No one takes anything that we do more serious on
the offense. And Derrick Henry, I mean, that's why he's
had the career. He's head. So you know, that's just
something that he's been working on and something we'll continue
to work on with all of our players.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
It's been a big debt this week. You find of
stuff holding up long enough to the marrow, holding on.

Speaker 7 (06:21):
To the ball too long?

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Is there not enough wicker rows and quick stuff? Where
do you see that hold?

Speaker 4 (06:27):
Sure? Some of that, all of that's true. It's not
usually just one thing. I mean, it isn't. I mean,
it's it's rarely like Okay, that's it. If it was,
it'd be a lot easier to fix, you know, so
all of that is true. You know, we could get
the ball to his hands quicker, for sure. You know,
could we hold up longer, could we protect it better,
could we scheme up the protections better. I mean all

(06:47):
of that. Over a course of a game or a
certain amount of throws, all those are gonna pop up.

Speaker 9 (06:54):
You know.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
You just you just try to avoid him the best
you can and and uh and we've done a good
job of that. It just it showed up the other night.

Speaker 2 (07:02):
You're concerned the offensive line is pass protection.

Speaker 4 (07:07):
No, I mean, it's like anything that shows up. Like
I'm not concerned about Derek fumbling because he's a problem.
He's gonna fix it. I'm not concerned about a protection
because I think we've got really good offensive linemen. I
think we scheme it up really well. Of sometimes, when
you get behind the sticks, you're going to get more
and more exotic pressures. When you're ahead in games, your

(07:31):
protection is going to hold up a hell of a
lot better than when you're behind. You're going to see
a lot more exotic pressures because they know you've got
to throw it and that's going to put a lot
more stress on your your protection schemes and your offensive line.
So those are the things that you control by trying
to get ahead and stay ahead, and that puts you
in an advantage and ahead of the sticks for sure.

Speaker 6 (07:52):
More of this, Yes, you're ever interested in your perspectives
as a play color. Do you care if you get
a touchdown with a quick drive? Are there are points
in the game where you'd like to have any minutes
scoring drive as opposed to a three minute scoring drive?
He said, didn't really care about I'm interested in.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
Your Well, I'll just say this, it is very difficult
in the NFL to drive the football and have those
extended plays. Somewhere along the lines you balk down, So
would you love to have an eighteen or nineteen play
drive and take eleven minutes off the clock and score touchdown?

(08:29):
That's the old saying score more longer, right, for sure,
there's no question you'd rather do that. And that's my
cousin tries to do an army right, score more longer
and not give them the ball one hundred percent. But
somewhere along those lines, you've got to get an explosive
play you've got to fight to get explosive to push
the ball down the field. So in the big scheme

(08:52):
of things, no, because the best offense is don't turn
it over. The score touchdowns on the red zone and
they're explosive as hell. So if you're going to be explosive,
you're gonna have shorter drives. That's just the way it is.
Because even even in the Lee last year, I think
we finished second third down conversions at fifty percent. Well,
the more often you get to third downs, just add

(09:12):
the percentages, Like, get to three third downs in a
drive and probably at some point if they get you
off the field on one of them, you were sixty
seven percent and you didn't get in the end zone.
So somewhere along those lines, you know you're trying to
get an explosive.

Speaker 7 (09:28):
Last one.

Speaker 10 (09:29):
They match a lot of heavier personnel and defense with
even dying sometimes what kind of opportunities does that prevent
opportunity present to an offense like yours? You know winds
up with two backs too, that ads on a lot
of good pass.

Speaker 4 (09:43):
Well, they match you, but you know, when we're in
those bigger people, they're going to be in bigger people.
They do a good job of matching their personnel with
our personnel or hopefully get Isaiah likely back. That adds
another tool for us, you know, in terms of personnel matchups.
So they do a really good job. I mean, Detroy
last week played a lot of bass early on on

(10:03):
early rundowns, whether we were an eleven personnel or not.
So some of that is to take away the run.
And and they've got their you know, their thoughts of
how to defend us, and we just got to do
a better job of consistently stacking place. That's that's really
what it is.

Speaker 9 (10:19):
We have.

Speaker 4 (10:19):
We have everything we need to be really a really
lead offense. We've got stacked things together on a consistent basis.
All right, thank you.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
That was OC Todd Monken ahead of the Ravens trip
to Kansas City for a Week four matchup with the
Chiefs this weekend. Now we'll hear from defensive coordinator zapf or.

Speaker 9 (10:43):
How y'all doing y'a doing that's good?

Speaker 7 (10:46):
How are you doing that?

Speaker 9 (10:47):
I'm doing good?

Speaker 7 (10:48):
Man.

Speaker 11 (10:49):
You know, new week, new opportunity. You know, it's a
week to week league. Things go by fast.

Speaker 9 (10:54):
You can't, you know.

Speaker 11 (10:55):
Obviously last week with disappointing for us as a team,
especially as a defense.

Speaker 9 (10:59):
But you know, it's Thursday of game week.

Speaker 11 (11:01):
We got the Chiefs on Sunday, and you can't let
this the last loss linger into the next week. So
I feel like we've been having a good week of practice,
good day.

Speaker 9 (11:09):
The guys been responding well, So I'm doing good.

Speaker 7 (11:12):
What do you think was.

Speaker 8 (11:13):
The biggest issue with them being able to run for
two hundred and twenty five yards?

Speaker 11 (11:18):
Yeah, I think it was just a combination of us
not doing our job, man. So we got to play better,
we got to coach better. It wasn't one one particular person,
one one particular group.

Speaker 9 (11:29):
It was guys.

Speaker 11 (11:30):
Just we were misstep or slow step in certain areas
on certain plays. And when you go get to a
good team, and especially good running backs like that good
offensive line, they're gonna make you pay.

Speaker 9 (11:39):
And they did that.

Speaker 7 (11:40):
So was it more of a.

Speaker 11 (11:41):
Ski or this combination of So, I'll say combination of both.

Speaker 12 (11:46):
Man.

Speaker 11 (11:46):
I'm always looking at it like how can we help
put the players in better positions? So you know, like
I said, we got to play better, we got to
coach better. So I gotta do a better job of
making sure that we understand what we're trying to get
done and where we need to be at and the
players we got to go out there, And so I
think it's a combination of both.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
It's they're put a lot of talk about returning the
RAMS defense M top of the past.

Speaker 9 (12:08):
That's some of that way through those three weeks M
one of the.

Speaker 5 (12:11):
Worst defenses of the past forty years. M.

Speaker 2 (12:15):
How do you guys think that you can go about
internal improvements to kind of return it to that sort
of level that.

Speaker 9 (12:20):
You hold on to.

Speaker 11 (12:21):
Yeah, just own own the mistakes and look at it
and just try to find every detail of how we
can get better, you know what I mean. So you know,
what's happened has happened. There's nothing we can change about it.

Speaker 9 (12:30):
Do we like it? No? Are we frustrated about it?

Speaker 11 (12:33):
Yes, But it's about what we do going forward. We
can't change the past. And you know, versus's gonna hit
you know, fortunately, it's it's hit again us. It it's
hit us again in this aspect. But what we're gonna
do about it? You know, you either soak and let
it get you down and and laying it, or you're
gonna get up pick yourself up and figure it out.
And the group of the group of people we have

(12:53):
in this organization group people having that defensive room, we're
gonna figure it out exact.

Speaker 10 (12:58):
Mr fans got it, uh a little bit confused and
you're looking back at the game and they see some
plays where you know, David jabos an off ball linebacker,
Mike Greenson on ball linebacker, Uh, Marlo Humphrey is kind
of in that box area. And I for those guys
properly aligned, And I guess what is kind of the
the reason for those a typical spots.

Speaker 9 (13:17):
Yeah, those days, they were properly aligned.

Speaker 11 (13:19):
And that's really just more of uh, the play call
and the personnel personnel that we had been and then
it depends on what formation they give us. So those
guys they were, they were probably aligned in those places.

Speaker 10 (13:30):
Yeah, John brought up you know, in times you have
to really trying to do too much, you know, did
you you mentioned that like last season they had times
trying to do too much?

Speaker 7 (13:40):
What is the.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
What did your view on that out in in how
do you kind.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
Of move bastide?

Speaker 11 (13:47):
Yeah, I think I think that's I think that's a
fair assessment because when you look at it. When you're
not getting the results that you want to do, you
gotta take a step back and really look at, Okay,
what can we do well, let's d let's continue to
do that and build on that, and what do we
need in prove? If it's something that we feel like
we can get done, our guys can go out there
and execute and go play fast, then we'll continue to
build on it. But if not, then you know, wild

(14:08):
waste of time with it. So that's definitely something that
we're looking at.

Speaker 7 (14:13):
Past rush has been a struggle in the third down rats.
If you ever almost look forty.

Speaker 6 (14:17):
Five percent, when are you looking at in those situations?

Speaker 2 (14:20):
Is it getting more creative at blitzes? Is it just
kind of going back to rushing before, Like what are
you trying to do.

Speaker 7 (14:25):
To make sure that they're down?

Speaker 9 (14:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 11 (14:26):
I think I think you always want to be creative
with blitzes and disguises. I think that a lot of
the situations that we ended up in. We gave a
couple of third longs this past game, but if you
look at the second half, they weren't in third along
a lot. And it's tough for to defend any offense
any team when it's third and when you're living in
third and short, third and medium. We didn't do a
good enough job on get back on track, which is

(14:48):
second and seventh, plus too many times in the second
half of second and ten they either got the first
down or it was third and one and third and two.
And you just live in that type of world, especially
against a good offense, a good team, they're gonna make
you pay.

Speaker 9 (15:00):
And that's what happened.

Speaker 7 (15:01):
Zach.

Speaker 6 (15:02):
You're dealing with a neck Adria as a young player.
Obviously he was dealing with Andrea's young player. I know
there's a lot that we don't know, but have you
been able to be a particular resource for him as
he sort of works went through this.

Speaker 11 (15:12):
Or yeah, man, I mean he's in good spirits. I
don't know necessarily know what's going on. All I can
do is just pray for him. And when I talked
to him, he was in good spirits. So you know,
my thoughts in pairs with him. I know how bad
he wants to be out here and and you know,
play football, lifelong dream. He was playing well. I thought
he was having one of his best seasons up to date,

(15:33):
so it I was I was crushed when when he
was going through whatever he's going through last week and
me seeing him in good spirits and him with a
smile on the face playing around was great.

Speaker 9 (15:43):
So hopefully, you know, we see him back soon.

Speaker 8 (15:45):
That kind of last year, I think it was you
said you were you were it was tough for you
in that like hours after that Cincinnati game. Here, did
it feel like that this weekend?

Speaker 7 (15:54):
How do you personally kind of.

Speaker 8 (15:56):
Block out the noise of everyone criticizing your defense?

Speaker 11 (15:59):
Yeah, that's yoh Man first, first and foremost. Every loss man,
every loss and every time we don't go out there
and we feel like we don't play up to our standards,
it is.

Speaker 9 (16:08):
Heartbreaking to me.

Speaker 11 (16:09):
Like I I've always since I was younger, I didn't.
My mom always told me that you never take loss
as well, and I still don't, but I understand now
as they get older, you got to move forward. So no,
I mean, the loss definitely stung Monday Monday night into
Tuesday morning.

Speaker 9 (16:24):
But I said, it's a week to week league.

Speaker 11 (16:26):
I've been around, I understand that you got to move
forward and you got to put that behind you. And
as far as blocking out distractions, a lot of stuff
that you guys are telling me I had no idea
about because I'm not on social media.

Speaker 9 (16:37):
I'm like just blocked out from all the noise out there, man,
And that's good.

Speaker 11 (16:42):
I think that when you can do that and you
don't listen to you can really focus in on what's
important and what you got to get done, because you know,
if you let if you if you listen to that
and you pay attention to that, it can definitely affect
you with your job and just in your regular life.
So I just block out the noise, man, focusing on
football that's we talk about here, and just focusing on

(17:02):
getting better Zach.

Speaker 3 (17:04):
You guys never made excuses, But how challenging is it
with to your defensive line?

Speaker 7 (17:09):
So we'll find out that.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
I'm not be not out there or the other guys.

Speaker 11 (17:12):
Or yeah, man, I mean, you know, it's always it's
always challenging when.

Speaker 9 (17:17):
You lose one of the best, like Beaks.

Speaker 11 (17:20):
Is one of the best DT tackles in the National
Football League, So I definitely don't want to minimize that
at all.

Speaker 9 (17:24):
So it's definitely gonna be.

Speaker 11 (17:27):
You know, you're not gonna be able to replace him,
But I feel confident in the group that we have.

Speaker 9 (17:31):
Yeah, we got some young guys.

Speaker 11 (17:32):
We got some guys who played a lot of football
and good football, so the expectation is to go out
there and go play well. I have full confidence that
our guys were gonna go out there and do it.
We fell short, but we got another week to work
and I feel fully confident in the guys that we
have out there. You know, we might have to do
some things different, but what we asked them to do,
they should be able to go out there and dominate.

Speaker 9 (17:51):
So I feel good about it.

Speaker 7 (17:52):
Did you do anything different this week, whether it's beetle
player or is that straw?

Speaker 3 (17:56):
I know it's a short week what you do, but
you change your routine at all, as individual meetings or
another group meeting after what you saw on Monday, No.

Speaker 9 (18:05):
You nun necessarily change. I don't think that it needed
a drastic change.

Speaker 11 (18:08):
Like I said, it was, it was a short week,
so we basically I thought the schedules.

Speaker 9 (18:12):
Built well this week.

Speaker 11 (18:13):
How we came in on Wednesday Wednesday with the players
and basically had two days in one and I think
we got a lot work done. We had to review
the Detroit film, We had to get that stuff right
there we need to get right. Had a great meeting,
great discussion to make sure we're on the same page,
and then boom, second half a day, we was right
on to Kansas City and moving forward exactly.

Speaker 10 (18:32):
I think Ada played just six snaps in the second
half Monday. Is that just a reflection on where it
needs to be as a run defender or are there
other areas of prived for him?

Speaker 12 (18:40):
No?

Speaker 11 (18:41):
I mean I think dophif think you've seen to make plays,
we had different personnel groupings and different positions in there
trying to you know, stop to run. But you know,
I got full of confidence and full confidence in a
da Fe and his ability.

Speaker 9 (18:52):
So I think his snaps will continue to grow.

Speaker 1 (18:57):
Yeah that I asked mart another day what the defense
needs to do to find some pies for being mentioned turnovers.

Speaker 10 (19:05):
Do you see that as what needs to happen or.

Speaker 4 (19:08):
What is your perspective?

Speaker 11 (19:09):
That's the number one thing, man, that's the number one thing,
and that's the thing we've been preaching. We've been jiling,
we've been working, our guy's been intentional about it. Obviously
we didn't get any Monday night, But when you it's
tough if you don't. If you don't get any takeaways,
that means you just have to consistently get off the field,
and that's just tough to do in this league.

Speaker 9 (19:26):
You have to take the ball away, get.

Speaker 11 (19:28):
Off the field, create short drives, create create negatives for
the offense to really be a top defense. So I
agree with Marlin in that aspect of you get takeaways.
A lot of those plays that you give up, they
go away. So that's definitely something we have to do.
Appreciate y'all.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
You're listening to Ravens Press Pass podcast. That was defensive
coordinator Zach Orr addressing the media after today's practice. You'll
now hear from special teams coordinator Chris Horton.

Speaker 5 (20:01):
Good to see everyone, Hope you guys are doing well.
Just a quick little recap about the game. First off,
just very pleased with how how our guys are playing
right now. There's still some things that we come back
into the into the film room and we watch, we
talk about and we're just gonna make sure that we
continue to chase our details and our execution. I do
feel like we're getting the most out of our guys

(20:22):
right now. The young guys are coming out they're accepting
the game plan, they're taking the game plan to the field,
and uh, and we're executing. But I think we could
be a lot better on on on some of these things.
And we're just gonna continue to work and looking forward
to seeing our guys going and play against Kansas City.

Speaker 9 (20:38):
Questions.

Speaker 7 (20:39):
Do you feel like Jordan.

Speaker 6 (20:40):
Stott has taking a week for sure? And he's had
some just tremendous punts the.

Speaker 7 (20:43):
Lost Lost movies.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
You know, I think Jordan's doing a Jordan's doing a
heck of a job, you know, And it just starts
with with him and his process and his approach to
the game and doing what we're trying to get out
of them with Randy's coaching, and we just gotta we
just gotta continue that. Right every punt is different, every
situation is going to be different, and uh, you know,
he's striking the ball well right now and our cover
guys are covering well for him. So we just want

(21:06):
to make sure we continue to on that path.

Speaker 7 (21:09):
We had some last.

Speaker 8 (21:10):
Week about kickoff penalties and is it just something that
in the course of trying to figure this out at
the price you pay to try to be creative, that way.

Speaker 5 (21:21):
You know, well, there's a there's a price to be
paid for everything, right, and that's that's one of them,
you know. And and I think with Tyler, I think,
look the kids doing a heck of a job. You know,
he's placing the ball where we wanted on those on
those deep kicks. But you know there is an advantage
to trying to get that ball on the ground right,
and that sometimes, uh, you know, we we want to
be aggressive. We want to be a little bit aggressive

(21:41):
if we can. And as the I think as we
continue to move forward, those kicks will land in the
landing zone, right.

Speaker 9 (21:47):
But we have to we have to get out there
and we have to do it.

Speaker 5 (21:50):
And once we eliminate that, I mean, I think our
cover guys are doing a heck of a job.

Speaker 9 (21:54):
I think Tyler's doing a heck of a job.

Speaker 5 (21:55):
And we just got to continue to work those things
when we think the time is right.

Speaker 3 (22:00):
John Mormost kind of said that Keith mitch Oden's you know,
work in progress on special teams. What areas does he
need to get better where when he comes to a
factor a few guys.

Speaker 9 (22:10):
In that area.

Speaker 5 (22:11):
It's like, you know, I think I mentioned this this
last week, right, Keaton is doing Keaton is doing a
heck of a job.

Speaker 9 (22:17):
Right, But when to play gunner?

Speaker 5 (22:19):
Right, you look at the guys we got out there, right,
his position is a gunner. It's a gunner position, and
we have guys in that position right now that are
playing pretty well. So so that'll be a position that
he'd be he'd be competing in, right, the kick returner position, right,
I think he's a heck of the kick returner.

Speaker 9 (22:34):
Right. But but the guy that's in front of him,
the other.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
Back that's up, plays slot on punt, and he's doing
a heck of a job. He's covering kicks as an
inside player. Right, So there's not there's not so much
that he's he's not getting better at the things that
he needs to get better at. You know, it's just
like where do we plug and playing at? You know,
that's kind of That's kind of how I see it.
I think right now, we just keep We're gonna keep
bringing him along. He's gonna keep coming out here, he's
gonna keep working, he's gonna keep doing the things that

(22:57):
we ask him to do, and then when his time comes,
he's gonna go out there he's gonna play well.

Speaker 1 (23:03):
That was Special teams coordinator Chris Horton answering questions from
the media before the Ravens head to Kansas City this
weekend to take on the one and two Chiefs. Next
up on Ravens Press Pass Podcast, we have safety Kyle Hamilton.

Speaker 3 (23:19):
What has sort of been the message this week as
you're getting ready for.

Speaker 7 (23:22):
This game, just get back to what we know.

Speaker 12 (23:28):
You know, we gotta prove ourselves every week in this league,
and didn't do a good job last week. But you
know we got another week this week in a big game,
and it's a big opportunity for us. So Scott's not falling,
so we'll be all right. And I think we just
need to attack this game.

Speaker 10 (23:41):
Are anything different or you just kind of go about
your business all the way?

Speaker 7 (23:45):
No, I don't.

Speaker 12 (23:45):
I don't think we need to change anything. I just
think we need to do stuff better. Philosophy doesn't change.
It's just a matter of guys getting the job done,
and I think we'll do a better job of that
this week.

Speaker 5 (23:56):
Guys, starting this year, I thought you would start defensively
from a certain level and take it up.

Speaker 11 (24:02):
You know, obviously it hasn't happened any even more insight
into why that's.

Speaker 7 (24:06):
Been the case, I'm not really sure.

Speaker 12 (24:10):
I'm not a coach, so I don't really wanna give
my two cents on it, not that I have any
cause I don't. I feel like, you know, we're doing
all the right things. It's just when game time comes,
need to put on tape.

Speaker 7 (24:20):
So I don't know.

Speaker 12 (24:22):
I feel like we've given ourselves the hardest past path
this these past couple of years, and we end up
in a good spot last year. So I feel like
if we get it corrected even sooner, this year will
be in a better spot.

Speaker 7 (24:33):
When when you look at.

Speaker 10 (24:34):
The the film, like you know, it's usually not one
thing right like it's but what are maybe the one
or two most significant things?

Speaker 7 (24:42):
Is it simple as execution? Tackling communication?

Speaker 6 (24:47):
What what?

Speaker 7 (24:48):
What kind of jumps out.

Speaker 6 (24:49):
That you you got's have harped on this?

Speaker 7 (24:52):
Yeah, I think just tackling physicality.

Speaker 12 (24:56):
I don't think the last game is who we are,
and I think it's uh, it hurts a little more
when you come out like that and it's uncharacteristic and
it's not a communication thing. It's not like you mess
up in the back end. Or got the front set
the wrong way. It's just a matter of not being
in the right spots and not winning one on ones
and not to everybody included. So, uh, it's up to

(25:16):
us to do that on a weekly basis. And you
know you can't take take you for granted. It's a
week to week league, and you know you're getting the
best in the world every single week. So you gotta
reinvent yourself, but also keep things the same.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
Kind of Zach Orr said, he takes it upon himself
because it's his job to get guys.

Speaker 7 (25:33):
In good places.

Speaker 9 (25:34):
He's getting a.

Speaker 7 (25:34):
Lot of criticism of your slow star defensively, do you
feel like guys are right place? It's just a matter
of you guys making more plays. Well, it was the
last part in just a matter of you guys making
more plays.

Speaker 12 (25:44):
Yeah, I don't think it's uh, it's uh whatever criticism
he's getting, I don't know. I feel like sometimes Ravens
fans can be a little spoiled, just like the amount
of success that this franchise has had. You know, we
lose five games in the world's about the end.

Speaker 10 (26:00):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (26:00):
I think, on Zach, it's.

Speaker 12 (26:01):
Unfair to put all the blame on him when there's
eleven guys out there on the field that are playing
their hearts off and he's put us in the right positions.
It's just a matter of us doing the right stuff.
And that's where I feel like the critiques of Zach
or whatever coaches are unfair because he can't go out
there and play for us, and as much as he
wants to, uh, he can't. So it's up to us
to go out and get the job done. So it's

(26:21):
not a Zach thing, it's not a coaching thing. On
the defensive side of the ball, it's just players gotta
get the stuff right.

Speaker 9 (26:27):
Kind of.

Speaker 10 (26:28):
It's like, say, you're looks like Worthy might be back
for them, and that the Chiefs casting offense, it's a
lot of quick passes for against so far.

Speaker 7 (26:34):
Do you think his arrival will kind of change things
for Albenholmes doing things back there. Yeah, I'm sure it will,
And they've used him a lot in the past.

Speaker 12 (26:41):
I mean, he had a big game against his last
time we played, so I always gotta keep eye on
a guy like that and super speedy, and I think
Thornton two showed up for him too in the past
few weeks, and it seems like they're their coaches do
a great job just getting those guys prepared, and those
guys do a good job. And I feel like the
past few years seems like at skill positions, guy as
numbers have been called and they haven't gotten a lot

(27:01):
of reps over there, and they make plays, so uh,
props to them, But it's up to us to kind
of game plan for everybody and have a plan for
everything going into it, which I think we will and
excited to go out there and play.

Speaker 7 (27:11):
Kyle, how do you think Christopher back Muzak?

Speaker 9 (27:13):
You know some coaches, right, they change things. Sounds like
when talking to.

Speaker 7 (27:18):
Him, he's like, you keep kind of the sacred team.

Speaker 9 (27:20):
How do how do you feel he has handled kind
of this, this adversity of.

Speaker 12 (27:24):
The path checks he is I think in coaching terms,
he's mature beyond his years. I mean and as a
person too. But I mean he's only been in it
as a coach for I don't know when he retired,
but maybe eight nine years. Uh, and he's hasn't been
a he's been a position coach for most of those years,
and uh, assume a position of Bravo's defensive coordinator comes

(27:46):
with a lot of responsibility, and I think he's handled
it tremendously with grace and uh, I think he separates it,
protects us for the most part. Comes in the rooms.
It's not like he's pointing fingers. It's I could uh
have j'all a bear spot here or there, whatever it
may be. And I think that kind of trickles down
throughout the whole room, which's no hostility within it. That
goes for the whole defense. And I think having a

(28:08):
leader like that you gain respect. Rookies come in saying
that realize the standard. Yeah, and you know, we've been
through the fire last year and we're going through it
right now, So I don't.

Speaker 7 (28:18):
Think it's anything. I just I feel like Ze always
had the same thing.

Speaker 12 (28:21):
You know, we're wanting too, not where we wanna be,
but it's a long year and it's fourteen more games
and hopefully we're looking back on our one and two start. Like,
I can't believe everybody's making such a big deal about it,
So props to him just getting the defense in the
right spot mentally to go out and attack physically.

Speaker 7 (28:38):
Rush early on.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Just do you think how can you improve like the
physicality in early downs and the mean teams are rushing
that kind of records. You guys personally fix the biggest
problem in that area.

Speaker 7 (28:57):
I I don't.

Speaker 12 (28:57):
I think it's it's it's a team defense kind of thing.
Comes down to the simplest stuff, the stuff that you
learn in literal league football, just tackling getting off blocks.
It's not a certain defense you can put somebody in
to make a tackle. It's it's just a matter of
us doing it, and guys want to so bad, and
that's something we've discussed, like the.

Speaker 7 (29:15):
Care factors there, which is great.

Speaker 12 (29:18):
Even though we may not be getting the results we want,
we can work with what we have just from a
mindset perspective. So it just comes down to tackling getting
off blocks.

Speaker 7 (29:26):
Winn. You're one on ones and it's.

Speaker 12 (29:28):
Really simple at that other day, but we still gotta
go do it. Obviously, those guys get paid on other
side of the ball to not let us tackle and
pull us up on blocks, So we've got to show
that we're valuable in that sense, and it comes to everybody.
DB's included going down and getting the run, fig getting
the ball in the ground and looking to play another day.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
