Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the real footy podcast. Thanks for joining us
to tip around twelve and this has a bit of
a special show because it's not only a tipping only one.
We're going to go back and have a look at
the teams we drafted in the preseason, how they're going.
So I'm joined by well, I'm Andrew Wus it'll be
aware of I've joined today by Peter Ryan and Libby Birch.
(00:23):
How are we?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I'm good. It's great to have Libby on board. Took
us well to get there, will we? But that's all right.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Excited to be back.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah, it's good to have you here, Libby. I know
that we welcome anyone who's a long way off the
pace in the tipping just to come in and just
cop it.
Speaker 3 (00:41):
I'm staying off.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
I had to do some mindfulness before coming on the
show because I was so disappointed in my weekends tipping.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
What's a mindfulness consists of just staring at the mirror.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
Thinking about I'm taking risks being on the bottom. So
that's why my tipping was so poor the weekend. I'm
trying to climb the ladder.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
It's hard. You're doing this and t north every week,
so maybe we should do it the no North Melbourne
to get more accurate.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Wow, it would be a really good idea, except that
it would make us look less superior and tipping.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
We shouldn't do that.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Yeah, it's good, good to have you here, Libby. There's
a footy training game.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
It's good.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
It's exciting to be back. Afl W season will be
around really shortly. We've got our first game on the
fourteenth of August, the opening game between collinwo and Carlton.
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Which would be great and it's going to come around
really quickly.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Two and earth MUDs fingers crossed. You have a bit
of pre season than last year, although it didn't.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Really hurt you at the end of the No, it didn't,
but it'd be nice to have a six weekly injury
somewhere in there.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
So hangover premiership hangover.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
Well we are.
Speaker 4 (01:49):
We've got Darren Crocker as our coach and that is
definitely not in his vocabulary to have a premiership hangover,
so we're doing everything we can not to have that.
I've been in two teams that are probably had one,
so I know the signs and the feelings and everything
like that. But it'll be an interesting year.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
For sure, you've.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Vowed after your tenth drink, we're not going to have
a hangover next year.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Not much of a drinker, so maybe after my first
I'm like, well, we I.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Have no premierships to be hungover with. Unfortunately, apart from.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
My yeah, I was just going to say, apart from.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
From my dipping prem ship a few years ago, I'm
still living on that. We'll start with there, the mid
season check in of our teams. I've been looking forward
to doing this, not so much in well. Actually the
first few weeks, Pete was actually off to a flyer.
Some of these left field recruits were doing well, but
(02:44):
some of them have come back to the field through
a reminder of what we did first episode of this season,
we drafted a team of eighteen, an open draft of
current AFL listed players. The goal was to draft the
best possible team this year, so it didn't take into
account having a builder list, and the winner will be
(03:04):
decided by a number of factors, including a popular vote
on the whole team and points per player based on
whether they get in the All Australian team. That's five points,
four points for winning the brown Low a f L
P A M. VP or the coaches award four points
for playing in the Grand Final, three points for Colin
(03:27):
Metal and the Age Footballer of the Year gets two points,
which forgotten about that that's open rewarding. I was going
to say, we won't go through the eighteen again right now,
but you can go back and listen to the draft
in episode one. Click the link in the episode notes
to see each team in position as the popular vote
(03:51):
stands right now. We'll say right now because it may
change in the time that you listen to this, But
Team Birch thirty seven percent, Team WU thirty seven percent,
although I actually you feel quick check it, it was
actually thirty eight percent, which leaves Team Ryan on twenty
(04:16):
five percent. So I'm going to try and get your
flow of preferences peat get.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Me over the line in this idea.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Actually, but what'll set with you, Libby? How do you
feel your teams going at the moment.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Well, I went through my team this morning based on
you know, our first sort of ten twelve rounds, and.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
I've got three players crueled by injury.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
So mcgovernn he's only played six matches this year, which
is okay, but not expected to play again for some
time after he seeks some information from the AFOL concussion panel.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
So that is not good for my key back line. Papply.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
He has only managed to play three games, and I
thought he was going to be one of the stars
in my small forward line and.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
He's got a fractured here.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
So hopefully he can come back soon because my team
desperately needs him. And of course Goulden has been a
massive out for my team and that was that really
hurt me, and it's really hurt Sydney and he will
definitely miss more than half of the season with that
ankle injury. However, on a positive note, we have Hogan
who is averaging four goals a game and he's third
(05:22):
in the Coleman Medal at the moment, so I'm I'm
pretty happy with how he's performing, considering he's had a
few injuries and been in and out Andrews. He's got
some career best numbers in the key back line. Neil
is in conversation for his third brown Low medal decos.
Of course, he's averaging thirty disposals and seven point two clearances.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Do you want me to stop there? I've got more.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Because you've got the two Brownlow wells.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
At least, well that wasn't a surprise. Nicholas favorite Decos
was the favorite.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Have you got any other Sydney players or did you?
Are you the curse?
Speaker 3 (05:54):
No, that's that's my only two Sydney players.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
However, I've got to We've got to the reason why
those players have been reduced to side the sidelines.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
The other player that I thought has been fantastic for
my side is Bolton. So I looked at some of
the Champion data results and in twenty twenty four he
was number one hundred and fifty two in the league,
so that is his rank and this year he's number
twenty nine in the league. So that's a change of
one hundred and twenty three positions.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
So you've got to get him into the Australian team
in terms of the points system.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Need I need him in there.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
They are meeting on Tuesday, the Australian first meeting of
the year. The panel.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Imagine if Libya actually got drafted to that panel, that
would throw this whole process into Did you give this.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Podcast up or would you continue?
Speaker 1 (06:42):
You have to clear interest, wouldn't.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
You I'd be loyal? I think this comes first podcast.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Would you guys. The two Swans injuries for you really
hurt because not only does it cost them from getting
any individual honors, it's hurt the team, their team, and
it means you don't.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Get any.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Ridiculous shot tired, real team going.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
I'm reasonably happy with the team at the moment. I
need I need my Carton players to lift a bit
because that's going to hurt me in terms of I
think I had Patrick Cripps as my first pick. That's
looking like a bit of a bust at the moment.
Charlie at four I think will improve as the season
goes on. He's gradually climbing up the Coleman Medal chart.
(07:39):
Need him to get the top three to give him
any chance of all Australian honors, which would give me
a few more points. Zach Merritz the one I'm really
happy with. He's exceeded expectations. Jeremy Cameron's coming along nicely.
He's leading the Coleman after a bit of a sluggish start.
Couzy pick it. That's one. I'm really happy with. Toby
(08:02):
Green that a lot of these guys are playing well.
Toby Green my forward line Becausey Pigott Grand Mys Tyson
Stingle and then Toby Green probably need him to just
to find maybe a little bit more to push those
all Australian honors.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
You're got heaps of good players.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
Yeah, I think I've got more good players. I don't
know how many elite in terms of performance this year,
which makes me a little bit uneasy. I need them
to finish well. But I've got a few guys in form. Importantly,
not many of them are injured, so I'm reasonably happy
with a side that any of I'm disappointed with not
(08:40):
quite at the moment. Maybe Elia Lee is going.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
To do a little bit more now, I was a
skeptical decision on the day, but.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
I'm quite happy Sam Taylor, full back, Callen Wilkie, he's
having a good year. He's going to push for all
Australian selection. Nick Blake, he could do a bit more,
but I'm quite happy. My Collingwood contingent Josh Deakos looking
like he's going to play in a Grand Final, so
you know, Jimmy, Kevin grind Mys. So these guys are
keeping me interested. I've got a couple of got some
(09:07):
dogs in there as well. They might be thereabouts about you,
Pet You had some wild selections at the start, which
was probably a measure of your lack of homework.
Speaker 4 (09:18):
But I have accept that, I've forgot how many shots.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Accept that Darcy and Riley, Philthorpe.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
For the first month you were I was cocker hoop
about those two. What key forwards they were proving to
be before poor old Sam went down with the knee injury.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
But it could have been really bad but it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
It wasn't coming back. And still I'm still a bit
about that. Nae. Riley, how do you pronounce? I can't
say that. Phil Thorpe try to, but it's really difficult.
He's been fantastic, he's been on the finds of the season. Yeah,
and he's emerged, and so I'm very happy with them.
But my back line has been and our conservative choices.
(10:04):
Jordan Ridley, how would you know? Tom Stewart great man
struggled with the injury sicily playing injury well below his best.
Sam Collins fantastic, Darcy Moore coin Okay, Jackson clear well
he plays and Kilda, so no one even knows what
he's doing. Well, yeah, that's a good play.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
Their half back line is actually the only good part
of their side, Sinclair and Wangling Mali.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah fantastic. So twenty five percent of the votes probably
about right.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
So you're scoring heavily, but you're being scored against all.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
I'm getting absolutely smashed when they get it out of
centerll they Gorn Butters and Jason Horn Francis is not
a bad sin Or you know Rock no decision.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
You need them to under our scoring system to really.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Push beyond Darcy and Riley. Phil Thorpe. I haven't followed
the back line as closely as maybe I should. And
also Bailey Fish, I don't know what I was thinking there.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
And he's he's done.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
The COO after spending mid of time in the BFL.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Yeah, he's not going to win the Calm and all
the make the Grand Final. I wouldn't have thought. And
Nick Watson, I'm very happy with my.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Back lines all right. Houston, I don't know. He might.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
He might not make All Australian because Josh a cast
will make it.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
He's having he's not having a great season.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
But you're the fourth All Australian.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
But you're going to get points respect so.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
You you'll get Max Homes, She'll get Grand Final points
to him. Though just fantastic.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Max Homes has been good, Jesus has been good. I
think they're trying to bring him down, but I think
he's been elite with with what he's got to play
with it.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Well, I think there's two things. One, they're trying him
playing forward center forward, where he's going to be more damaging.
Is not making life is easy for him, Plus the
oppositions focusing.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
It's better for North Melbourne, but it's not good for
your team the way i'd start up.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah, that's right, I can't bag cheesel. I like cheesel.
But how many third years, isn't it?
Speaker 1 (12:21):
How many of your Yes, I think how many of
your players would you think of pushing all Australian at
the moment?
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Well, I say locking hell yea Australian. Nick Dakos pushing
all Australian too, Harris, Harris, Andrews definitely, Jake. I think
I think Andrews is ahead of him, just because the
way the side's going.
Speaker 1 (12:44):
We're trying to make a case for a Boltwood.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
So that's four Hogan potentially five home six Yeah, Ericans about.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
Six sixt gone.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
But as if he stays on the park would be
in contention, but not fantastic. Sam Collins will be in
contention full back, and Riley phil Thorpe will be in contention,
and Nick Watson might be in contention, but he could
be in the squad.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Do you get any points for the squad?
Speaker 1 (13:14):
You don't know?
Speaker 3 (13:16):
All right? What about you?
Speaker 1 (13:18):
Sam Taylor, Callum Wilkie I think would be thereabouts, Lucky
Whitfield thereabouts, Josh Decos, Yeah, I think he's exact. Merritt's
a lock at the moment. Toby Green's thereabouts again. Charlie Kerns.
We got a little bit of work to do, but
(13:38):
he could get there. He has a big second half
during Mcameron I think would be in there.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Is there a player and this is a question without notice,
I just thought of it. Is there a player in
the competition that you wish you had in the team
that none of us have got in their team.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
I think we missed a couple of those free players
like Sarrong.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
That's a massive out Richards.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
I think the Dogs ed Richards and Bailey Dale. But
at the start of the Nick Blakey looking Whitfield, how.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
Could you predict the fall from the Swans? Really?
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Yeah, this one yeah, Chad Warner, he could get there.
I've got a few guys who are I think on
the edge. I think I think I've got a lot
of all Australians potential squad members that doesn't get but
that doesn't get the job done in this game.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
Is what I would describe your team as celebration of media,
mister twenty five percent. They're either crashing or they're fantastic.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
I'm going to call I should call you all team
the Liberal Party in terms of twenty five.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
You're getting what do we think about my my rac
to Coning, we had a.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Good mark first month. Yeah, but I think the decision
at the moment is weighing on him because his form
has dropped in the last started well Max, Max has risen.
Tim English is playing a few good games.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Here and there, but the camera and Triste probably no
one picked Lloyd make Lloyd makes a beneficiary of the
rock rule, isn't he? I think I think Tom de
Conne is one of the well. He needs to lift
his form for the last four weeks spent really disappointing.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
You will You're the list manager, You've got a right.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
Pick up your game. I want to win this.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
Any regrets, Pete any busts any.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
You're picking regret because it embarrasses me, the lack of
homework that I put in to pick the team. No regrets.
I stick by my team. I would never bag one
of my team. Seriously, I've got no regrets. I've come good.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
You Bailey Fridge.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
We should have We should have points for the Garyers Gary. Yeah,
ballet Fish actually is a bit.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
Of injuries have hurt yet. I mean, you can't play
through it all. You can sort of playing through injury
to it.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
We should have points for Garrier's best finals player. But
that's a bit late that I'm hoping that I'm clinging
one of these players just comes good in the finals.
It hasn't done much and the Cooma medal should be
more with more than three points. It's pretty hard to
play a Colma medalist.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Well not really. It's really only about six players each
year who are in it. Ben King. I mean I
don't think any of us has Ben King. No, it's
another player in there at the start.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
And which just shows how hard it is to predictate
his season is going to be. And given that players
only have short live spans ten to fifteen seasons. Even
these guys are absolute best players in the camp. Jeez,
they're vulnerable to one year just being wiped out.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
You're unlucky having what you picked two pont Telly getting
injured about a few days after you picked the team.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Yeah, well, I mean, is a champion?
Speaker 4 (16:53):
I think someone didn't someone requests supplementary draft.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
I did do that, but was it you? I don't
know one of us did. Yeah, it's just guys like
bon and Pelli. They are incredible that they've kept playing
for fifteen years at such a high level.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
They're generally not getting injured until they're being picked in
our team. So we'll keep an eye on that, how
it goes on the second half of the year, and
how that voting changes at the moment. So again it's well,
how many points do we get for the popular vote.
I don't think we've got it there, but I think
if I think I keep leading, it should be worth.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
That final question, is or a change that you'd make Libby?
Speaker 4 (17:32):
I think, well, with will Day's injury, Newcome's probably getting
most of the attention in the midfield, so that's probably
hurt his year. Dylan Moore was probably a strategic pick
from a leadership structural point of view, but that doesn't necessarily.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Buy me points on all Australian side.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
And I don't think the Hawks are performing as well
as I would have imagined. They've probably been shut down
by teams understanding how they play a little bit more
this year. So I think probably be my Hawthorne selections
letting me down at the moment.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
I love the fact you put leadership into a team
that never plays, but.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
That's important for the popular vote though, because you need.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
To Wow, that's true, yes, but I'm not sure what
Dylan Moore's impact is going to be on your team.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Sorry, he was close to the mark last year.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
He's a great player and he is a great leader.
He's just he's found themselves, those small forwards at Hawthorne,
Ginaven Watson and Dylan and Econom McDonald just determined by
the vagaries of the team's form.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
Really and also whether other clubs have cottoned onto the
tackling the high tackles.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Correct.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Okay, we'll take a short break and be back to
tip the around.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
We're online all the time.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
Just search Age Real Footy on Facebook or Twitter. Welcome back,
We'll get straight to the leaderboard like we've had a
change of lead at the top. Pete, you're second, that's coming.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
Into Hawthorne unfortunately, and Michael Gleason tipped Brisbane, which pushed
him one tip ahead of me.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
He's out in the lead sixty nine.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
I don't like. I felt uncomfortable with Glease, you know,
at my heels. He's such a kind of competitor.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
That's yeah. Sometimes you don't want to be the leader
at this time.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
You can, you can, you're making a smart move.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
It does change your It's a big strategy I found
when you're getting the lead. So Glas is out in
front sixty nine, pet On sixty eight, Calum jasp and
up the third on.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Sixty announced it to me on Monday morning. You walk
past with a strut instead of you know.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
What he said to me last week. You guys, there's
a lot of pressure on me because I need to
win either this or the Office one to stay in
the competition for next year.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
I thought he lost his job if you didn't win.
That's why I thought he was under so much pressure.
He's does he know that? He doesn't know that, does he?
Speaker 1 (20:08):
Well? That's what he Well, we have he should stay cheering.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
Is a good tipster. He's ice cold, and it helps.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
That his team is winning well, so when in the
fifty games towards his cats, and that helps him. I
don't know where I am, but I know I'm on
sixty four and Libya you're on fifty seven, which I
think would put your.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
Six second Cannie and I are.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Do you have your own little mini battle dude?
Speaker 3 (20:37):
Yes, definitely, yea, even though we're teammates.
Speaker 2 (20:41):
It's fair enough. Actually, I look at him as tips
for other games because she's a good tipster about me.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
About under And before we get into it, Pete, you
tipped cart and then made them you're lost last week,
which was an extraordinary decision at the time and was
made to look even more ridiculous come about twenty past three.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
It's a big, big sound in the west end of
the town and they call at the mighty enough enough
apologies for that.
Speaker 1 (21:15):
We didn't actually say that was the punishment, but anyway, okay,
so lesson learn for Pete smart, don't be a yahoo
with your lock.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
That's true. It was embarrassing and it only occurred to
me midway through the third quarter when I was watching
on Saturday. That was my lock.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Devastated Carlton shouldn't be a lock against any team at
the moment. First game of the round Brisbane against the
injuries strapped Essendon. That anyone over one hundred and ninety
centimurders and seems to get hurt right now, so maybe
they need to put the doors a little bit lower.
And then they're hitting their heads and suddenly they just
they keep falling over.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
I tried to laugh at that.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
It was very nasty. No, that is nasty, but that
is that it's almost unprecids it is.
Speaker 4 (22:04):
It is terrible, especially Langford going down with the quad
and he's only just returned from hisself tissue injury and
then read hammy and then started in hawali Va foul
hamstring injury, and he was probably one that was their
emergency for a couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (22:21):
It was coming in.
Speaker 4 (22:21):
Providing a bit of spark for them and they have
to bring in their eighteen year old Zach Johnson, which
is their seventh debutantive.
Speaker 2 (22:30):
Yeah, it was a late pick in the last year's draft.
I think it's good that they're Actually it's one of
the benefits though when you have injuries not to see
the benefits, but you do give players an opportunity to play.
And how good was zingers clak last.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Week revelation the interview afterwards fantastic.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
I loved every minute of it and his family watching
him kick that first goal. It was exactly what footage about.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
And I think people would be a lot happier with
this year compared to the previous two seasons, given that
they're playing a lot more youth. I felt the first
two years underbred Scott they were kind of they weren't
really going anywhere in terms of I mean they were
having good starts of the season, but by the end
of the year they wouldn't play finals and they hadn't
really given all that much. It was exposure to their kids.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
Zach rats someone to get excited about it. I was
at the foot on Friday night and there was an
audible sigh when he went down the rooms with what
was obviously an injury. People were so disappointed. Who do
you think, I mean Brisbane you'd think will win?
Speaker 3 (23:24):
Yeah, I think I think Brisbane.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
But I have found this year the efficiency going inside
fifty is probably well with Champion data, it's the bottom
six in the camp so that's probably what's been letting
them down all season. And I feel like the drawer
against North Melbourne, the loss against Melbourne is something you'd
expect from a team that has reached the highest of
(23:46):
highers last year. But it's not to say they're not
going to do it again. It's just I think that's
just the emotional battle of being the hunted.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
Yeah, I heard locking yell on the radio. You spoke
well about he actually thought they were playing better this
time last year, even though they're in worse position. So
he's confident they can change a few things around and
you know, gets back to being a dominant team. They're
obviously missing Danahe well like him.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
He was at all Australian formed by the end of
the season. I mean he was playing at the absolute
peak of his powers, probably knowing that he was going
to call it WIT's and a bit of release.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
At the end of the tunnel. I reckon Brisbane will
win this easily. They poor old es. I mean, you
can't overcome that many injuries to one, you know, Cohort,
It's impossible.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Yeah, I mean it would have been half of them
even without the injuries. And throw this on top. But
I think they've been pretty honest this year. They had
a couple of games that they've been blown out, but
I think.
Speaker 2 (24:46):
Overall Adelaide Bulldogs terrible and the rest they've been good.
Speaker 1 (24:49):
Yeah, I think Brisbane will win this.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
So do I have forty points?
Speaker 1 (24:53):
I'm going to jump in and make them alf It's good.
Speaker 2 (24:56):
You obviously like the theme, so.
Speaker 1 (24:59):
Actually I hadn't thought about that. Oh I'll tell that now.
It won't matter because.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
Brit good lines.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
If you if your lock breaks, who's going to cop
the punishment? Next week? Pete Okay. Second game of the
round Friday night for the blockbuster Collingwood against Hawthorne. Two
clubs who we thought at the start of the season,
who many thought at the start of the season would
be probably still around prolim final week. I'd still think
(25:29):
that's the case with Collingwood. Hawthorne probably not quite as
confident about that after their last well probably the whole season. Really,
they haven't really hit the heights of last year yet.
Do you give them anyone brave enough to tip them
this week?
Speaker 2 (25:43):
Well, I'm not, but I'm interested in your thoughts.
Speaker 4 (25:47):
No, I have been going with the risky tips to
try and climb the ladder. It did not work successfully
over the weekend because I had the worst scorecard. However,
I think this could be a sneaky chance, but you
cannot go past the Pies at the moment.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
The depth of their side is just incredible.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
They banked such early wins, which meant that McCrae could
really start to rest some players and fine tune that
middle part of the season where a lot of teams
get fatigued and build up injuries. So they're going to
have penalbry More sidebottom and he'll potentially returning.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
So that's so.
Speaker 4 (26:28):
Yeah, And I just think that they are a sound
side and when I've watched them this year, the ability
to have so many different modes of game plan to
go to dependent on how the opposition is turning up
has just been magnificent and something that the other teams
across the comp I don't I don't think.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Have not of this though.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
The defenses, their defense has been fantastic. I'm tipping Collinwood,
but any Collingwood supporter knows that Hawthorne more often than
not beat Collingwood.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
They certainly did like last time smacked them middle of
Winter eleven goals. That was probably when Collingwood were out
there absolute trough in terms of their injury run.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Even in their premiership year when they lost Decros McGinness
smacked into him. That was a Hawthorne win and most
Colin supporters would have nightmares about the two thousand and
twelve to fifteen era.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
Yeah, well, I think there's a period where Buckley just
couldn't beat But Collingwood, I mean they're the best team
in at the moment. The last two weeks, I've found
ways to win despite having injuries. I mean against Freeo
they somehow won with twenty few were inside fifties. And
then last week with all that, I mean it was
sorry Liby, it was against North Melbourne. But not many
(27:42):
teams can win when they have that much disruption going
into the game, losing players, reasons around Bobby Hills, absence,
that sort of stuff. It can be destabilizing and not
many teams. And then to have the game not played
in the way you want it to be played, yet
still find a way to kick away in the last quarter.
(28:03):
I mean that's really impressive. But how good is Jamie Eli? Yeah,
six one and five in the last three weeks. He's
the most of the modern prototype of the forward that
you want, medium sized who can mark anyway on tip
in Collingwood three goals.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
On tipp in Collingwood by five points. Oh well, I
haven't got a lot of confidence if Hawthorn g had
enough supply by those smalls could wreak some havoc.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
They need to toughen up a bit.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
Yeah, Pies by under ten ten points.
Speaker 1 (28:35):
First game Saturday afternoon, we head up to People's first stadium,
Gold Coast against Fremantle.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
How many people you reckon they'll get ah, fourteen thousand.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
More than Gold Coast against Saint Kilda. We'll going to
that later, but Gold Coast three. It's going to be
hard to tip against gold Coast, is it.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
Yeah, it's impossible to tip against gold Coasts at home. Yeah,
and give that given that there's such a tough unit.
They've been given so few opportunities by the AFL and
they've just molded themselves into a great team.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
I'm going to take I'm going to take the other
side to that because for what fifteen years, they've had
many issues at that club and to play retention, but
no one was so how easy it was for gold
Coast when players were leaving, were they Now they're winning
and it's suddenly.
Speaker 2 (29:26):
All I don't, I don't. I think both sides had
a point, but it was poorly made by Ross really.
I mean the reality is the compromise draft is a
frustration to a lot of supporters and a lot of clubs.
Speaker 1 (29:38):
It is. But you've got to go at the game
in queens Land.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
It's great, nothing against Gold Coast at all, and I
reckon they win. I reckon they'll be Freeman or Fremantle
aren't great travelers.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
What do you reckon? They No, they're not.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
But then they're really surprising me this year because they
had that win against WS in Sydney and you think, well,
they can produce their best football away from home, but
it's just been far too inconsistent.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
They're very young, they are, and.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
I was watching them the other week and they would
just go long down the line, say footy, and when
they play safe footy they do not look like winning
at all. But when they do take the game on
use the corridor, they look really dangerous. With the players
they have. I think it's the Suns, but I wouldn't
I wouldn't make this a lock.
Speaker 1 (30:19):
No, not lockworthy, but I think I'm going to make
it a lock. I decided I'm making it a lock.
You just want to sing the Frio song? Yeah, well
I even know what the song is. It's very singable,
That's what it was, an ac DC song. I'm tipping
the Suns, but I think this.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
Will she's rolling eyes. That's great.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
Next day of the round. Sorry, Greater Western Sydney against
Richmond Energy Stadium, this is the one. No, we can't
make Richmond the lock at the moment, but why not? Well, well,
I think we made that rule.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
I was going to make that my lock. No one
told me about that where you.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
Can make them in your lock dispensation.
Speaker 1 (31:04):
Yeah, so the Giants, the Giants, the gates. Well, no
one's gonna tip Richmond.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
Take us through why Giants will beat them? No, No,
they're been inconsistent or no, because you've done preparation here
and you know what.
Speaker 4 (31:24):
Yeah, well, I think the Giants have been lacking in
their contest game. In the games that they have haven't won,
they've had sort of a form slump, and it's because
they're not getting it done in the middle of the ground.
And if they're not feeding forwards like Hogan who can
take incredible marks, and you know they're not getting that
forward halftime.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
That I really think feeds their games.
Speaker 4 (31:45):
So for me, Kingsley's side needs to win the battle
in the middle of the ground in order to get
it going their way and that's what Fred did at
home to beat them in Sydney. So I think with
Richmond's injuries yep again is now starting to hurt them.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
It's hard for the young teams to travel as well
on the road. There are only two trips on the
road this year seventy two point loss sixty one point loss.
Speaker 2 (32:12):
Lynch will come back in nan Curves definitely.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
And I don't think Bolts can travel Honey because no.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
No, it's a bit late for him unfortunately. And the
other thing with the Giants, I mean minus thirty eight
contested ball against Carlton last week and they lost the
inside fifty ken again, so it probably gives you an
idea how badly Carton played well, how badly they use
the ball. But I think this is a chance for
the Giants to get a bit of a get their
(32:38):
form back, ye get an easy, easy game to win.
I think they'll win by about forty seven points eight
goals thereabouts.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
I think that's part YEP.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Next game Sydney against Adelaide SCG Saturday nights. So for
the AFL loving people in Sydney that can drive from
Olympic Park to the CG and watch the Sydney doubleheader,
a bit of mini gathering in Sydney. The Swans geez
ow disappointing? Are they? I tipped them on Sunday, So
(33:10):
I'm mixed disappointed and I can't believe I'm saying this,
but the Swans are at that stage where you're thinking
which team is going to show up, which is something
we haven't said about the Swans since well the nineties
when I was at school.
Speaker 4 (33:24):
I'm disappointed in Calum Mills, like it starts. It starts
with their leadership. He's been injured, Like, of course that's
not always your fault, but there's been a couple of
seasons where he's been injured. Then he goes and hits
someone high and has to miss a week, Like that's
not someone someone you want leading your club or showing
the way, And I just feel like he's letting them
(33:45):
down at the moment, not being on the park.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
I know that sounds a bit rough, but not being
out there. He's just got himself back. He's out again,
So it.
Speaker 2 (33:53):
Could be a line in the sand kind of moment
for Mills. I reckon as a captain, thinking he wouldn't
have thought about that previously, but now that he's done
it and another three weeks, he'd be starting to think,
I've got to rain this one.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
Though annoying.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
Yeah, you can get continuity going to hit the training
track again. And it was clumsy. It was clumsy by him.
I don't think he actually meant no. I don't think
he's not a dirty player. He's always been a ballplayer.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
My theory is that John Longmiya held such a tight
reign on that group, like was such a strong leader
and great coach and experienced coach. Dean Cox is a
person that's really popular within that foota club and a
good coach. But still learning that there's just watching them.
I don't know any intel, just watching them. There's like
they've almost taken a breath out and thought I can
(34:44):
relax a bit. Yeah, I can relax a bit and
they'll pick and choose. Just there's just a feeling that's
a good point as they get used to.
Speaker 1 (34:51):
Dane Cox because I probably always Jane Cox as the assistant.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Yeah, and a good guy and an easy person to
talk to with all whatever it was.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
I mean, what's your kind of do you have you?
What's your psychology? You're and viewing an assistant coach, a
long time assistant, and then the senior coach leaves. It's
kind of it's a different relationship.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Well you can.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
You just have to watch him John Longmar from the
box to know that he's a intense coach that would
never let anything go.
Speaker 3 (35:26):
And I think you'd.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
Be quite up tight as a player, which would probably
produce good performances if if channeled in the right direction
as well. And then if Dean Cox was sort of
his balancing board, if that makes sense, If Dean was
a bit more lovely caring on that sort of side
of things. When he steps into the head role, who
is that next person to be the harshness, the person
(35:51):
to say that's not good enough. You can't drop off
after three quarters of effort and not produce in the
last quarter. So I think you've hit the nail on
the head their pete in terms of where's the balance
gone within there?
Speaker 2 (36:02):
I think he's been a good coach. Cox just said
it's a harsh plus injuries.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
On top of all that, the change in the off season.
It's kind of might just be one of those years
for Sydney. Adelaide, Yeah, Adelaide for me as well. I
was hoping you guys would tip Sydney just so good
pull one back.
Speaker 2 (36:23):
But do you want us to?
Speaker 1 (36:27):
It's up to you. I mean, I don't know. I
think the ones are a chance this week just because
they were so bad last week that they will want
to a tone and there's seasons on the line again.
Speaker 4 (36:35):
So the only thing is I feel like Sydney's back
line has always been an issue and Adelaide scoring over
half their goals from inside fifty marks, so if their
backs don't bring the ballder ground, Adelaide will smash them.
Speaker 1 (36:48):
And the other thing, Joel Handling playing is a defensive forward.
I don't know how long that can last.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Jesus had and when you talk about Cox, he's had
Handling and mccarton playing his key forwards.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
That's a hard road.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Yeah, that's Libby Birch playing out of the square.
Speaker 4 (37:03):
Don't tell me that short really well, wow, I think
would be a very good.
Speaker 1 (37:10):
Would you like to play?
Speaker 2 (37:12):
Really?
Speaker 3 (37:13):
No, I don't think. See that's the thing.
Speaker 4 (37:14):
That's that's why your point is true, because I don't
think sometimes backs can't be forwards.
Speaker 3 (37:20):
Sometimes they can be.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
But yeah, both the tough positions. But yeah, this is.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
Hard as a forward.
Speaker 3 (37:27):
I'm not answering that question.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
I have a bit of respect.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Different different skill sets. Melbourne against Saint Kilda, first game
Sunday afternoon in.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
The Alis Well, I was looking at this and Melbourne
have only actually have a forty percent win rate here,
so it's four and six.
Speaker 3 (37:49):
Uh, and I was surprised by that. But then I
remember some of the defeats.
Speaker 4 (37:54):
Some of the the opposition teams that have come and
played there and smashed them. So I think think case
I pick up, being in career best form really helps them.
Who stops who stops him? But I'm going to go
for a whiskey tip here and I'm going to go
to the Saints. I think they have been playing poorly
and they're lacking depth in the midfield. However, I think
(38:17):
with Melbourne's win rate here, there's a chance that they
could get jumped again by the Saints.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
That's a brave tip.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
That's very I've got to climb the lot of that's good.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
I mean's got no form to speak of in our springs,
So it's good form. Isn't it.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
A record?
Speaker 2 (38:37):
They might be actually they might be what is it,
what's the ground called it? They might be parks specialists
and we're just going.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
To find Well, that's my that's my shaky tip.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
I think Melbourne is starting to play really good football,
and they're starting with playing still pretenders. Real that the
premissure player for the club as well, that's extraordinary as well.
Speaker 3 (39:05):
I haven't, I haven't, I haven't seen.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
Why do you think? Why do you? Honestly, what's your analysis?
Tell you?
Speaker 1 (39:12):
Well?
Speaker 4 (39:12):
Because I think that the only reason they're playing well
is because they've got nothing to.
Speaker 1 (39:15):
Lose, right, and now they have something to lose because
they a foothold in the season.
Speaker 4 (39:24):
Started the thinking about it, they lost absolutely everything they could.
They were in the pits of the pits in terms
of media culture, what everyone thought of them, and then
I reckon they would have been like, we've absolutely got
nothing to lose, let's just go out there and play footing.
Speaker 2 (39:37):
However, they were saying that they were trying to develop
a game style that they were struggling with.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Yeah, I know, but how can how much of that
can you?
Speaker 1 (39:45):
I'm fascinated by that idea that you're trying to change
the way you play, because I mean, I don't watch
footy as closely as well, I haven't watched Melbourne as
closely as their coaches would clearly. But in the end,
isn't it just about winning contest and moving the ball?
And Melbourne started to win.
Speaker 2 (40:02):
Contest well, I think they're less selfish. Yeah, well that
comes to sharing the ball around a bit more. They've
got some of their running players, they're creating more runoff half.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
But less selfish is more an attitude rather than actual change.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
But Malciam's made a big difference playing in front of
the ball, I think because he's a team oriented player.
And I like Windsor and Jad mcveighe's come back only
in the last few weeks. They're good, and Bear he's
been in great form. And I also like Langford and Lindsay.
Their ten games into their career, so they're getting better
(40:35):
every game. I think that's where some of the improvements come.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
Yeah, and I think the preparedness to handle there was
one play last week Petrarca was streaming through the wing
and I think he had players either side of him
and he's shaped to kick it, but then thought no,
I got a handball. This handball to shop as faster
and he got the extra fift day meters. But that's
I think the Melbourne of a month ago probably would
have gone for that long bomb. And then he's thought, well,
(41:01):
this is the way they got to play, so extra handble,
isn't it?
Speaker 4 (41:03):
Which is the way they're yea and all those It's
been analyzed a lot on footy shows too. I think
that's where the game is going, in terms of being
able to use being able to use your numbers at
the contest or going to your numbers.
Speaker 3 (41:17):
Ahead of the footy.
Speaker 4 (41:18):
And it's a fine balance of getting overlap so that
you can get deeper entries or just getting it straight
in there to avoid defensive numbers.
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Well makes sense because you've got numbers around the ball
and you don't use all your extra numbers there, then
you're kicking it into a spot where you don't have
the numbers.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
So I just can't. I know, you can't play as
well as you did last week, But he's going to
play and cosy picket.
Speaker 4 (41:42):
Well, you've got some of the best half back line
in the in the league for the Saints, but.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
They're not great defend they're anyway. I mean, good luck.
I hope you win.
Speaker 3 (41:53):
Thanks Pete.
Speaker 2 (41:54):
I don't think it's an interesting it'll be.
Speaker 1 (41:57):
It'll be it'll be a big upset of the Saints
can get this done.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
It's a risky because she's fifty six or something.
Speaker 1 (42:06):
But it won't be as big en upset as it
would be for West Coast where to beat Geelong this week,
which is the final game of the un.
Speaker 2 (42:13):
With you, I think Gelong will win.
Speaker 3 (42:17):
I no, no, I think I think the Cats will
definitely win.
Speaker 4 (42:20):
But I just don't they I spoke about this the
other week, but I don't think the Cats had had
made enough, had had enough wins to warrant the luxury
of resting players, and hence why we saw Dangerfield go down,
which was a shame. But we know that Cameron is
in career best form and they've got the easiest apparently
(42:41):
they've got the easiest home and away fixture towards the
end of the season.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
That's going to be interesting.
Speaker 1 (42:47):
Yeah. I've done a lot of predicting and I think
Geelong win a lot of games.
Speaker 2 (42:51):
Yes, yeah, danger probably in hindsight and even ahead of that.
Shouldn't have played in Adelaide.
Speaker 4 (42:58):
No, but I think they just needed to because they
dropped a few games they shouldn't have and they might
catch them up by the end of the year, as
we just said with the fixture. But I think that
was just a decision they had to make.
Speaker 1 (43:08):
Because it's a bit un Geelong lot because they generally
they're prepared to absorb those losses knowing because they're so
confident in there in what they have. So Geelong will
win this. But the Eagles are much better to team
adopt this stadium and they've been more competitive in the
last month. I mean they gave Adlad a good run
for a half last week. So okay Geelong for all
(43:32):
of us, that's all we have time for today. Thanks
for joining us, Thanks for Libby for coming in.
Speaker 3 (43:38):
Team Birch. That needs a bit thirty nine by the
end of the week.
