José Ferreira de Castro nasceu no longínquo ano de 1898 e emigrou, como tantos outros, para o Brasil quando tinha 12 anos. Foi seringueiro, um duro trabalho, quase escravo, de extrair borracha por horas a fio sob um calor abrasador. A sua sorte foi saber ler, escrever e fazer contas.
